So John Leguizamo performed a one man play this past Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at the Paramount Theater.  It was called “Ghetto Klown” and I was to photograph the first 10 min or so from the back of the house.  I frankly didn’t expect to post this many images…I mean it’s a one man show how much variety could there be, right?  Wrong.  Leguizamo was so high energy and the set lent itself personally to his material…which was the sordid and hilarious story of his career trajectory in decade chunks beginning with the 60′s.  His physical energy and masterful mimicry were outstanding.  Bravo once again to the Paramount for bringing this show to Austin.

What makes Austin cool?  This…

Once again I had the pleasure of photographing Anthony Bourdain at the beautiful Paramount Theater and this time he brought a buddy, Eric Ripert, the celebrated chef of New York’s Le Bernardin restaurant and Bravo TV’s Top Chef.  They took turns comedically “interrogating” each other police style hoping to get a laugh from the very enthusiastic sold-out (yet again) crowd.  They followed that with a sort of foodie current events exchange and ended the nearly 2-hour event with audience Q&A.  Bourdain openly loves this town.  It’s become a tradition for him to visit the Paramount in his off season and it’s never boring.  He’s very generous with his time and doesn’t hold back on his opinions (my favorite trait!).  And yes that is an Austin Beerworks Pearl Snap Pilsner that Mr. Bourdain opted for, nice choice.  I’d suggest buying tickets early next year.

After the show the two men headed over to the Stephen F. Austin for a private meet & greet with several lucky fans and donors.  I was also fortunate enough to photograph this portion of the evening.  If you were among the guests or just curious check the shots out here.

The message I took from photographing Demetri Martin at the Paramount Theater last night was that Austin loves Demetri…and the feeling is mutual.  He did two shows last night to near sell-out crowds, impressive.  I photographed the first show and stuck around to enjoy the material.  Comics are like rock stars in my opinion only cooler…because what they do is so much more revealing, there’s nothing to hide behind and Demetri Martin didn’t need to hide.  By the way he calls this tour the “Telling Jokes in Cold Places Tour”.  Great.

I was very excited to photograph this show.  Robert Ellis is a new favorite of mine.  I’d been listening to his new record “Photographs” for about a month when I found out I was going to get to photograph his show at the Stateside Theater.  He was gracious enough allow me to walk out behind him when he hit the stage to grab a wide shot from the rear.  The show consisted only of Robert Ellis, his guitar, and his song catalog…and it didn’t need anything else.  He debuted several new songs (great stuff forthcoming), and engaged happily with the audience which knew the material well.  The Lovely Sparrows opened and were excellent as well.  Great intimate show at the Stateside Theater…let’s hope this trend continues in this classic venue!

Jack Hanna has a live show…and it’s really popular.  The Paramount Theater was packed on Saturday afternoon.  Kids everywhere…popcorn everywhere as Hanna introduced the crowd to live exotic animals and told stories of his adventures that delighted the very captive audience.  He was really cool and very generous to the audience offering autographs (I confess, I have one) and engaging with the crowd.Here are a few snaps!

I had the pleasure of photographing comedian Bill Bur’s performance at the Paramount Theater on Saturday night.  I remembered him from Chappelle’s show, but wasn’t overly familiar with his stand-up work (I was in the minority here).  He was really great, several memorable riffs.  We stayed for the entire show.  He’s appearing on Breaking Bad’s season 4 and has a very popular “Monday Morning” podcast/rant that you can check out in iTunes.

The Civil Wars tore through a sold out set at the Paramount Theater last night.  They’re a big deal right now and it’s easy to see why.  One guitar and two humans owned the entire room for nearly 2 hours.  The highlight for me was a disguised  acoustic cover of Smashing Pumkin’s “Disarm”.  I’ve never mentioned an opening act before, but I’d be remiss not to in this case.  The Staves opened the show.  They are three sisters from Scotland that feature the most luscious three part harmonies I’ve heard in a long while…not to mention solid hooks and strong melodies.  No backing band accompanied either act…and I personally didn’t miss it.  Keep your eyes peeled for both of these acts during SXSW 2012.  Thanks again Paramount…2012 continues it’s stellar streak in this beautiful theater.
