Get Down on Their Level

It maybe a cliche, but kids really do grow up too fast. This makes it vital to capture as many childhood moments as you can.

To help you get the very best possible images of your children, we've pulled together some handy tips from some very talented photographer moms.

"One of the first things that I find myself doing when photographing a child, is that I get down on their level by dropping down to one knee, or even sitting on the ground," says photographer and mom Jennifer Ford.

"With so many different ways for photographers to display and share their work these days, inspiration is never far away," says photographer and mom Jodie Griggs.

"Be creative and don't be afraid to push the boundaries. Kids respond well to new ideas and will often have their own suggestions that you can incorporate."

Keep it Fun

"Kids can be really hard work when it comes to photography and you can find yourself getting easily frustrated," Griggs says.

"Try to keep it fun for everybody involved and the results will always show this! Sometimes your little model will be in the right mood, eager to cooperate -- make the most of these occasions and don't be afraid to resort to bribery if you're desperate!"

It's Not About Equipment

"Shoot with whatever you have, it doesn't really matter! Think more about things like composition, angles and lighting and less about how expensive your camera is," Griggs says.

"When it comes to kids, the most important thing is simply having your camera, in whatever form that is, with you all the time!"

Get Candid

"Another thing that I like to do, if we're talking about casual, candid shots, is to try and refrain from too much 'directing' of a shot," Ford says.

"I might ask for one posed or smiling shot, and then I will just quietly watch the child or children interact with themselves and the world around them, taking pictures as I see good moments happening..."

Robohand printed 3D change the life of a boy !

Take a quick look at this video of Liam and his 3-D printed Robo-hand. It’s incredible!

This whole story back in 2011 with two men who had no relationship with Liam. A man by the name of Richard Van As lost his right index finger and found a man on YouTube, Ivan Owen, an amateur mechanical engineer.

Van As and Owen exchanged emails back and forth trying design the cheapest, most efficient and effective prosthetic finger. During the development, they recorded the whole experience on their blog, ‘Coming Up Shorthanded.’

That is how Liam’s mother found these gentlemen and asked if they had any full hand designs. After hearing Liam’s story, Owen and Van as choose to develop a hand for him for free. Owen flew out to South Africa last November engineered and printed the hand for young Liam for less than $150! That’s incredible!

Van As and Owen explain:

This device was built for a 5-year-old boy. Using Makerware, it could be scaled to fit a wide range of individuals. The only thing that would need to be changed is the size of the bolts purchased from a hardware store. The design is open source and in the public domain. We encourage anyone who can make use of this design for any purpose to do so.

5 Games we could be playing on the PS4 and Xbox 720

1. Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes

Set to be a prologue to PSP title Peace Walker and not the Metal Gear Solid 5 that many might have been hoping for, Hideo Kojima unveiled 14 minutes of stunning gameplay footage from the open world Ground Zeroes at PAX 2012 to mark the 25th anniversary of the iconic stealth game. Running on Konami's Fox Engine, the game has been confirmed for the PS3 and Xbox 360 with no mention of future generation consoles, but judging what has been shown off in the video we definitely wouldn't rule it out.

2. Watch Dogs

One of the most talked about games at E3 2012, the GTA-style sandbox title which involves hacking into criminal records and phones could well be earmarked for the 'Xbox 720' having shown off the game behind closed doors using Microsoft's innovative SmartGlass tablet and smartphone technology. Watch Dogs has been confirmed by publisher Ubisoft to land on the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC but the SmartGlass intergration could hint to the game also making an appearance on the next Xbox as well.

3. Whore of the Orient

TeamBondi, the team behind LA Noire looks set to turn its attention to the Far East for its follow up to the innovative motion capture based cop drama which the developer revealed will launch on the PC and next generation consoles. The above screenshot and a game description on the Team Bondi website indicates that the equally gritty game will be based in Shanghai in 1936 where a 'group of Western cops' try to restore order to the most 'corrupt and decadent city on the planet'.

4. Destiny

Courtesy of a contract document signed by Activision and original Halo-makers Bungie which was revealed as part of a recent lawsuit case, the planned series of sci-fantasy action shooter games was outed with an Autumn 2013 release date for the Xbox 360 and plans to launch on Microsoft's next gen console currently being dubbed the 'Xbox 720'. Set to be available in four instalments, Bungie has since introduced a range of t-shirts on its online store featuring the Destiny logo registered by Bungie adding further weight to its release. Halo: Combat Evolved was of course a launch title for the original Xbox, so Microsoft could follow suit for its next console offering.

Creating plenty of buzz prior to its official E3 2012 unveiling, the gritty-looking take on the Star Wars world from LucasArts has yet to receive a console platform we can expect to play it on or even a release date. Set in the dark and seedy underworld of Coruscant, gameplay footage of the third person shooter/adventure title from amazing, detailed visuals to the impressive motion capture appears to point to life on consoles that Microsoft and Sony are still saying nothing about.

How Microsoft can avoid the pitfalls of Sony's PS4 announcement

Microsoft now has last licks at debuting the company's Xbox 360 successor. Here's how it can avoid a lukewarm reception.

Press events are a tricky beast. No one ever said they were easy to pull off. But with Sony casting the first stone in the next-generation console gaming war, Microsoft can learn a lot from what worked and what didn't.

When the lights went up, Sony execs were shaking hands and congratulating each other. But the packed house at the Hammerstein Ballroom wasn't exactly participating in the same adulation. Instead, it was left with a heap of unanswered questions, most notably the lack of physical hardware and a price tag.

By now it's safe to assume Microsoft will strike back with an event of its own, possibly before the company's E3 2013 press conference. If that's the case, one-upping Sony's coming out party shouldn't be much of an issue.

Here's what Microsoft can do:

Give us a box and give us a price

This one's a no-brainer. Sure, the PS4 and next Xbox will most likely just be a box, not much different than the PS3 or Xbox 360. But I think some critics who've downplayed the absence of a physical console might be forgetting that the box itself can be news, too. What if it's shockingly small? What if there's some sort of functionality built into the casing the likes of which we've yet to see so far in the industry?

Let's also not forget about the branding side of things. For all intents and purposes, the Sony event was made to be the PS4's coming out party. This was to be the world's first exposure to the future of PlayStation. For a presentation to carry that kind of weight, some sort of symbol must be attached to that tentpole event.

Keep in mind, Wednesday night's event was attended by press from all around the world who flew into town for 24 hours or less -- all that time and money spent on what was not a whole lot more than a series of trailers. Even if it were nothing more than a hollowed-out plastic mold, I do believe there'd be a much greater sense of satisfaction throughout the industry. If this wasn't meant to be that kind of party, then Sony should not have gone through with it.

Don't spend a lot of time on the specs

Specs and numbers are all fine and good, but they mean next to nothing to the average gamer. Sure, developers care about specs but they already know what's packed inside the thing because they've been working with it for months.

Telling the world that your new console is jam-packed with 8GB of RAM is like prefacing a concert with a detailed description of what kind of guitar pedals are going to be used in the performance. There's a time and a place for these kinds of things. Don't get me wrong, I understand that there's an audience that cares about specs, but do a better job of explaining how these specs will directly benefit the end user.

Microsoft needs to make an event directed at consumers because they are the people who need to be won over. Accomplish that and you're already ahead of the game.

Don't tell; show

A lot of high-concept and lofty aspirations were tossed around on Wednesday night, specifically in the realm of real-time streaming and social connectivity. That's great, but Sony should have created some kind of real-world demonstration to help better get some points across. Even if all that entailed a prerecorded video, it would have given the audience a clearer understanding of what kind of social and cloud-based functionality the PS4 will possess.

Sony spent a while talking up how seamless and intuitive these ultra-ambitious features were going to be, yet we all left that event without any idea of how exactly it was going to work.

We were also never properly introduced to the PS4's interface. There were glimpses of it during the video-sharing segments, but a brief tour really would have been beneficial and provided a better understanding of what the next PlayStation is going to feel like.

Don't repeat anything

With Sony hitting the stage first and bringing along a number of third-party developers to show off their next-generation endeavors, it's eliminated a lot of what Microsoft can do with games that won't be exclusive to the next Xbox. The key here is to avoid repeating any of those presentations. Confirming that these developers have also signed on to support the next Xbox is one thing, but spending the least amount of time on games we've already seen Sony talk about should be a top priority.

Debut a killer app

There wasn't one game exclusive to PS4 that really won the crowd over. Of course, Microsoft won't be able to pull this one out of a hat, but it also shouldn't sit on a killer app, either. If there's a Halo 5 cooking or a new game from Epic in the works, Microsoft should absolutely lead with that.
Microsoft started off the last generation with the majority of blockbuster exclusives, but that trend has been shifting toward Sony for a while. Sony wasn't able to generate buzz around a "must-have" PS4 title, so now it's on Microsoft to see if they can rise to the occasion.

Of course, Microsoft has yet to announce any sort of next-generation Xbox event, but we're still anticipating something soon. As soon as we hear anything we'll be sure to pass that information along and will be on hand if and when it happens.

Regardless, the big winner this week is E3 2013 happening in June. We can all but guarantee both Microsoft and Sony will have new, playable hardware at the big show in Los Angeles, and we'll be there live-blogging and roaming the show floor to bring you the absolute latest.

This will feel familiar for Apple fans -- the Tab Overview flag utilizes the MacBook’s trackpad to give you a new way of browsing. Three fingers swipe down and voila! You can see all your open tabs in a simple tile display, à la the exposé feature Mac users have known for years. Maybe that’s why this flag is only available on Mac.

If you want to install this tool, just type "about:flags" into Chrome's search bar and then find Tab Overview.

If you haven't yet delved into Chrome Flags -- the experimental laboratory for new features -- then do yourself a favor and check it out. Just type "chrome://flags" or "about:flags" into your search bar, and you'll be treated to a list of cool tweaks. Some will work on your system; some won't. or click her Secure Password Generator

If you’re running Chrome on Windows, Linux or Chrome OS, this flag will fill in passwords for you when you open an account creation page. There are myriad extensions (a plethora, even!) to improve Reddit's appearance and performance on Chrome. If you haven’t customized your experience on the content sharing site yet, you’re probably missing out. Try Reddit Companion, which adds an info bar to your browser that will let you vote and view comments at any time. Or check out SeeIt!, which lets you view link images without clicking them or opening a new tab. You could also optimize your commenting with Threaddit and organize threads effectively.

9. Post to Tumblr/Pinterest:

Run across something in the course of your Internet travels that you simply have to show your followers right this instant? With thePost to Tumblr extension, you can just right-click on any image that strikes your fancy and you'll be given the option to share it. Is it Tom Hanks' head on a bird's body? What's Ahead of Us

What we are showing here are "Design Validation Units" (DVUs) that use real production methods and techniques. These are a result of a number of rounds of prototypes before them. Based on everything we have learned from these DVUs, we will be revising our designs to simplify manufacturing and increase the robustness of the manufactured version.

We'll be working on small modifications to everything from the stainless steel band, selection and refinement of adhesives, adjustments to the display module, refinement to the top mask in color and material choice and simplification of flexible circuits. The revisions we plan on doing will tackle key issues like making the product as waterproof as possible, optimizing scratch resistance, and ensuring that every product that comes off the line stands up to a high standard of quality. The charger will be revised to move from a 3d printed process to injection molded parts. This is something we have years of experience doing for a number of products that have come to market.

We are in discussions with several potential assembly partners, but we need to have final numbers for our initial manufacturing run before those talks can continue. We were originally interested in using Fulfillment by Amazon. After talking at CES with other Kickstarter veterans, they mentioned thatshipwire.com was an interesting route for fulfillment as well. We will look into a number of fulfillment services to determine the best one for our needs.

World’s First Real-Time 3D Printing Pen

3Doodler is a $75 3D Printing Pen, hailed as the world’s first by co-founders Peter Dilworth and Max Bogue. The two launched a Kickstarter fundraising campaign yesterday (Feb. 19, 2013) and in less than 24-hours the campaign has gone viral with 5,800 backers pledging over $518,000; well ahead of their initial $30,000 goal. Oh and there is still 32 days of fundraising to go.

Below you will learn everything you need to know about this fun little product, from how it works to what it’s not and where to learn more.

How Does it Work?

3Doodler uses ABS plastic. After being plugged in, the 3Doodler can draw in the air or on surfaces. As the pen draws, it extrudes heated ABS plastic which quickly cools and solidifies into a stable structure. They achieved this by taking a heated extrusion head off a standard 3D printer and incorporating it into a standalone device. Like a hot glue gun, a single piece of plastic is fed through the top, coming out melted through the tip.

Two buttons on the side allows a user to control the speed of extrusion (fast & slow). To draw 3D objects in real-time, a user must extrude at the slow speed setting so the plastic has time to cool down (as seen in the gif above).

What if I can’t draw?

At the end of the day, it’s just a pen (albeit a pretty cool one). If you can’t draw with a ’2D’ pen your skills are not going to magically change. The developers hope to address this issue with the use of stencils; kits that will help users create objects by tracing lines and designs on a flat sheet of paper and ‘welding’ them together using the 3Doodler (see Eiffel tower stencil above). Think of it as a model and you’re just prefabricating the pieces for future assembly.

If this product wants a chance at mainstream adoption it will depend on the community that forms around the stencil kits and how rich and freely accessible they become.

Android mobiles hit by spamming computer virus

Cyber-thieves are using games including Angry Birds to turn Android phones into spam-sending drones.

Phones have been infected with spam-forwarding software that hid inside free versions of popular Android games.

Once installed, the booby-trapped app contacts a web server for a list of phone numbers then starts sending junk text messages to them.

Angry Birds Space, Need for Speed Most Wanted and many other games have been used in the attack.

The first stage of the campaign to recruit phones to act as spam relays. It involved sending out thousands of messages supposedly offering people free versions of popular Android games, said network security firm Cloudmark in an analysis of the SpamSoldier attack.

The copies of the games were held on a server in China rather than on the main Google Play store, it said. After the app is downloaded users must disable some safeguards, grant the app permission to install and give it the ability to browse the web or send texts messages before it will run.

Attack spreading
Once installed the app removes its icon from a phone's main screen and then contacts a central server for a list of target phone numbers. It then starts sending out spam messages in a bid to trick more people into downloading and installing the rogue app. Other spam messages sent via infected phones falsely told people they had won a gift card.

In a separate analysis mobile security firm Lookout said SpamSoldier worked hard to hide its activity by editing outgoing message logs to hide the junk texts being sent. In addition, it also looks for responses from the numbers it spammed to prevent victims finding out about its presence.

So far, said security firms, the number of phones infected remained low but junk texts sent by infected phones were starting to pop up on all US carriers. Cloudmark said whoever was behind the attack had recently ramped up their use of it. Now, it said, it was seeing more than 500,000 junk texts per day being sent through infected Android phones.

"This sort of attack changes the economics of SMS spam, as the spammer no longer has to pay for the messages that are sent," said analyst Andrew Conway at Cloudmark. " Now that we know it can be done, we can expect to see more more complex attacks that are harder to take down."

Ciaran Bradley, head of handset security at Adaptive Mobile, said growing numbers of spammers were adopting this tactic.

"We've also seen the spammers try to spread the infection by advertising free adult videos featuring a well-known reality TV star," he said. ". It illustrates the lengths spammers will go to to ensure their messages are delivered and to avoid detection."

To help protect themselves, Android owners were urged to be wary of unexpected messages that offer free versions of apps which are usually sold.

Watch Dogs Confirmed for PlayStation 4

Ubisoft’s open world adventure Watch Dogs is headed to PlayStation 4 in addition to previously-announced platforms.

Ubisoft’s open-world adventure Watch Dogs is headed to Sony’s new console. The news comes via Sony’s live press conference in New York this morning where a live demo took place on stage.

On PlayStation 4, Watch Dogs will be "more connected, more immersive and more interactive." Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said "we are creating games that can be played anytime anywhere across many different devices."

Watch Dogs was originally announced at E3 and was said to be coming to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Last week, leaked marketing materials suggested it would arrive on “all home consoles” this holiday season.

The PlayStation 4 has been officially revealed in New York !

The Sony PS4 has been announced by Sony! At long last we've had our first look at the new console and so far it looks... next-geny.

With TechRadar in attendance at the event on the 20th Feb, Sony revealed some tantalising details about the hardware specs, along with some amazing software features that the new console will have.

But sadly, and almost unbelievably, we STILL don't know what the PlayStation 4 looks like. Sony has, however, revealed some fundamental details about the PS4 hardware, announced during the event and revealed in a post-conference spec sheet just what we'll see when the console launches during the holidays this year.

With TechRadar in attendance at the event on the 20th Feb, Sony revealed some tantalising details about the hardware specs, along with some amazing software features that the new console will have.

PS4: Hardware specs

AMD, as we guessed all along, is coursing through this new system's veins.

Post-event, Sony revealed the system runs on a single-chip custom processor and utilizes eight x86-64 AMD Jaguar CPU cores, with a next-gen AMD Radeon based graphics engine powering the way.

The "highly enhanced PC GPU" packs 18 GCN units - that may sound a like a lot of techy mumbo jumbo but what it essentially means is that the GPU packs 18 processing clusters, each packing up to 64 cores. That provides a lot of parallel processing power, and will thus handle the majority of the PS4's grunt work. It hits 1.84 TFLOPS of processing mojo.

Sony announced at the NYC event that the console will use GPU compute features to take advantage of this components raw power - it'll be used for general computation tasks as well as building graphics.

The PS4 will ship packing 8GB of GDDR5 memory. That's some super-fast stuff right there and should enable lightning fast performance.

Indeed, Sony has revealed that you will be able to power down the PS4 mid-game and then switch it on again in seconds and pick up right where you left off. That's the sort of loading power that this memory enables.

Other specs

We're also looking at Blu-ray disk support plus good ol' DVD, plus HDMI output support as well as Analog-AV out and an optical digital output.

PlayStation 4 Eye

What's really grabbing though is the development of the PlayStation 4 Eye, a newly developed camera system that utilizes two high-sensitivity camera equipped with wide-angle lenses and 85-degree diagonal angle views.

Sony said the cameras (amounting to 1280 x 800 pixels) can cut out the image of a player from the background or differentiate between players in the background and foreground, enhancing game play handily. There's also mention of logging in using facial recognition and using voice and body movements to play games "more intuitively."

Will the PS4 be 4K capable?

In a chat with Kotaku, Sony has revealed that the PlayStation 4 will be able to playback 4K/Ultra HD video. However, it will not upscale to 4K or play games at 4K resolution.

Backwards compatibility

The PS4 will definitely not offer native support for PS3 games. However, there will at some point be a service on the Sony Entertainment Network that offers server-side emulation and streaming of games from PS One classics right through to PS3 Platinum Editions.

PS4 controller: DualShock 4

The PS4 controller comes in the form of the DualShock 4 pad. Very much a classic design, the DualShock 4 nevertheless offers upgraded vibrations, enhanced motion sensors and a Vita-like touchpad on the front.

PS4 release date

The PS4 release date is "Holiday 2013". That's the only detail Sony revealed at the launch and it's unclear which territories it applies to. Certainly the U.S., almost certainly Japan. We have a feeling the U.K. and Europe may have to wait a little longer, maybe even until early 2014.

This is pretty much what happened with Sony's previous consoles - the PS3 came out in the EU in March - and is backed up by various leaks and rumours. At least you'll have plenty of time to save up if you live outside of Japan or the USA.

PlayStation Move

Sony has confirmed that PlayStation Move will play a big part in the PS4 ecosystem. However, it has not yet been revealed whether the PS4 will launch alongside a new PS Eye camera and new Move controllers or whether the peripherals are staying the same with all the enhancements made console-side.

Synergy with PlayStation Vita

Sony has revealed that the PS4 will launch with the ability to stream games directly to your PS Vita. In exactly the same way as the Wii U allows you to switch off your TV and continue playing on the tablet controller, the PS4 will wirelessly send your games to the Vita.

There will be similar synergy between "all Sony devices" which means Xperia handsets and tablets, Bravia TVs and BD players.

Sony hinted that there will be more announcements in this area, too. We think the obvious next reveal in this area is the ability to play PS4 games on your Vita from any location using a wireless connection.

PS4 Instant On

The PS4 will be one nippy device if Sony is to be believed. It will have an instant on/off feature allowing your to shut down during a game and then boot up from scratch in seconds and resume where you left off. The days of waiting 60 seconds as your console loads up are about to end.

PS4 price: how much will it cost?

No pricing details were revealed at the event, so all we've got to go on are various rumours from before the launch - but it might be that Sony has aprice point of around $400 in mind for the US release. That translates to around £255 so you could extrapolate that to around £299.

This is further backed up by a recent report in The Times which states that Sony is aiming for a price of under £300 in the U.K. Many people think it'll be more than that though - we'll just have to wait and see.

Second-hand games on the way out?

Sony has yet to discuss this area of the PS4, but you'd think it would dispel the rumours if they're not true.

The rumours suggest that Sony is going in the same direction as Microsoft in that it wants to kill off the second-hand games market. Current industry wisdom suggests that future PS4 games might be tied to your Sony Entertainment Network account and will thus have no resale value. That's a similar approach as used by PC developers using Steam so we reckon this is a likely development. Doesn't mean we're happy about it, though.
