"This week, Disney announced that they will be rolling out MyMagic+ in the Walt Disney World parks over the next months. MyMagic+ will use RFID technology to put all of your information such as park tickets, hotel room key, dining reservations, and more on a bracelet called a MagicBand. It will also include FastPass+ which will allow park goers to schedule times to ride their favorite attractions."

Miami Art Basel is here (!!!), and we’re excited to invite you to a couple of openings which will be exhibiting our latest project, A Charge for Privacy. Showing at both Graffiti Gone Global and Miami Independent Thinkers the piece is a reminder that nothing online is really “free.” We often forget (or might not even realize) that the online services we depend on for our most intimate and private exchanges (Facebook, Gmail, etc) are not exactly “free” nor are they exactly “private.” Every word you email to your family and every link you share with your friends is being archived, indexed and monetized, either in the form of targeted ads and/or other data-mining ventures. Sometimes these institutions encroach a bit too much on our most private data and when those that notice make a stink about it they get accused of being miscreants or at best get an, “Ooops, we’re sorry we invaded your privacy like that.”

Like it or not, this is the normative economic exchange for services online today, privacy is the currency of our digital ecology. A Charge For Privacy attempts to recreate this relationship by offering a utility, essentially an iPhone charging station, at the cost of privacy. Basel goers are welcome to charge their cell phones at the station, but not without agreeing to the Terms of Use (written all along the sides of the station). When an iPhone is plugged in the station proceeds to download all the photos stored on the phone. These terms make clear the exchange, ” […] You (b) grant Branger_Briz an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense) to use, copy, publish, stream, store, retain, publicly perform or display, transmit, scan, reformat, modify, edit, frame, translate, excerpt, adapt, create derivative works and distribute (through multiple tiers), any and all of the images retrieved.” The second the photos are downloaded, the station immediately projects them as a public digital-graffiti installation.

And cause we know you’re wondering, yes, the two charging stations are for $ale and yes, the software + source code will be available for free online soon.

URep is a t-shirt brand and online community where artists and users can submit designs inspired by their hometown. URep-ers will vote for the best designs which are then printed and sold. But that’s not it! A portion of the sales of your winning design will also benefit a charity of your choice! Yes, this can count as your good deed for the month. I recently had the chance to chat with my friend Ramon Branger, Partner/CEO at The Alten Group and Digital Director for URep and ask him a few questions about this project…

Welcome Ramon and thank you for accepting my invitation. Let’s start with the basics… What’s your official role at URep?
My role in this project is that of Digital Director

Tell us a little about the team behind this great project…
The people behind URep are: Miami locals and Siblings Lucas, Marcos and Daniela Calderon along with the minds at Macias Advertising and The Alten Group.

The Calderon Family came to us with the idea of a t-shirt business that was created for people to represent where they are from. While attending College around the country they found that their peers and themselves constantly wanted to represent where they are from and highlight their wonderful cities. This was the inspiration that led their entrepreneurial spirits come up with the idea to launch URep Authentic.

We created a socially responsible, crowdsourced, hyper local, online, apparel business and online community that highlights the best of every city.

Within the platform we have also added a networking component so that if you are looking for a graphic designer, painter, sculptor and photographer you can find one here. Even a diamond in the rough. You never know.

Working hand in hand with the family, we helped create, produce and execute the business model as well as all of the branding, marketing, design and web development of the community.

The idea is simple, create a digital platform that helps highlight the city’s creative talent, charities, people and landmarks. Always using the city as the inspiration. Increasing home-grown pride and always giving back to the city.

I told a few friends about this project and one of the things they loved most is that part of the profits will be donated to different charities. Can you explain how this works?
When the artists submit a design, there will be a question on the form that allows them to chose the charity to benefit.

Being a Miami creative, what do you think of Miami’s current relationship and perception of Art & Design? Do you believe we have the potential to become a ‘big city’ like NY, LA, etc?
I think Miami definitely has the potential to become a big player in the art and design scene. Art Basel is a huge international fair that comes every year to our backyard. Every year more and more satellite fairs are popping up. The growth of Art Walk in Wynwood has been incredible to watch. And more and more movies and TV shows are being filmed here each year. We are definitely getting there.

Gotta ask you this. Are there any local rock stars already on board? Any hints?

Once you conquer Miami, what’s next?
URep LA, URep NY, URep Chicago, and other cities nationwide. We hope that the community will guide us to the next market.

Any other upcoming projects?
We have a few projects in the works for both local and national brands, but don’t want to give anything away yet. :)

Colombian-born visual artist Ivan Argote ‘Retouches’ Mondrian Paintings @PSFK

Colombia-born visual artist Ivan Argote is known for creating artworks that convey a rebellious attitude toward traditional art. In this surprising piece, titled Retouch,’ Argote films himself with a video camera and proceeds to spray-paint over top of two paintings by the famed Dutch painter Piet Mondrian. While it may seem like a juvenile act of vandalism, Argote’s work seems to highlight the often-overlooked characteristics of paintingsjust glanced at in museums — in this case, the precision of Mondrian’s usage of vertical and horizontal lines and the three primary colors. With their graffitti additions, the paintings become more noticeable in a way.

Gunman Updates Facebook During Standoff

During a 16-hour standoff with SWAT teams, an armed man in Salt Lake City who had taken a woman hostage updated friends and family about the incident on Facebook.
Jason Valdez, according to the Associated Press, made six status updates, posted pictures of himself and the woman (“Got a cute `Hostage’ huh,” he captioned one of them), and added at least a dozen new Facebook friends during the standoff.
Valdez had taken the woman hostage Tuesday evening when police tried to serve him with a felony drug warrant after a missed court appearance.
“I’m currently in a standoff … kinda ugly, but ready for whatever,” Valdez first wrote on his wall. “I love u guyz and if I don’t make it out of here alive that I’m in a better place and u were all great friends.”
Friends and family responded with more than 100 messages. At least one of them warned Valdez about police activity outside, to which he responded, “Thank you homie. Good looking out.”
After officers swarmed the room, Valdez shot himself in the chest with a handgun. The AP reported that he was in critical condition on Tuesday.
Valdez isn’t the first to check into Facebook during a crime. In 2009, a burglar logged into Facebook while robbing a house — and forgot to log out. Similarly, police used Facebook to track down the teenager who posted a “Should Obama be assassinated?” poll, and police caught a fugitive who had fled to Mexico using information from Facebook.
Unlike in these incidents, however, authorities believe Valdez’s Facebook communication gave him an advantage in the standoff. They are discussing whether his friends should be charged with obstruction of justice for interfering with a police investigation.

Kinect For Windows Software Development Kit Debuts - PSFK

This afternoon (EST), Microsoft at last unveiled the software development kit for their Kinect technology, the platform that uses motion-sensing, skeletal tracking, facial recognition, and voice recognition software to allow human movement and voice to act as the controller for games and objects. PSFK has written about a variety of Kinect hacks, but now hacking is no longer necessary because Microsoft has made their development kit free of charge, and available to the public. The press release blog post for the software package explains:

As of this morning, the SDK is officially available for download – at no cost – from Microsoft Research. It provides access to Kinect’s ‘raw sensor streams’ – which means developers can work with the high speed skeletal tracking capabilities, depth sensor, color camera sensor and the microphone array. Oh and over 100 pages of high quality documentation and sample code to demonstrate how to use the sensor.

The SDK includes not only drivers but also APIs, device interfaces, installer documents and resource materials. It’s another exciting milestone for a technology that has captured the imagination of millions, and has become the fastest selling computer electronics device of all time.

To celebrate this event, Microsoft is hosting a 24-hour coding marathon, where they brought developers to the Microsoft campus and gave them a day and a night to use the kit to see what kind of interesting apps they could come up with. You can watch the livestream of the event here.
