Mozilla released out the first Thunderbird 5 beta

SOFTWARE DEVELOPER Mozilla has released the first beta of Thunderbird 5, its next generation email messaging client.

Apart from Mozilla's decision to skip a major version number, Thunderbird 5 features a new addon manager and extension management API. Mozilla says that the user interface for the addon manager will change before the final release. For Mac users there will be 32-bit and 64-bit Universal binaries, however Thunderbird 5 will drop support for Mac systems running on PowerPC processors.

At present Thunderbird 5 looks similar to the tabbed interface found in Thunderbird 3. Mozilla says that there are interface tweaks such as being able to reorder tabs as with Firefox. Given that this is just the first beta, it's likely that more adjustments will be made before the final release.

The latest version of Thunderbird Beta has the following changes:

-New Addons Manager and extension management API (user interface will be changed before final release)
-Tabs can now be reordered and dragged to different windows
-Revised account creation wizard, offering improved set-up
-Attachment sizes now displayed along with attachments
-New troubleshooting information page to aid supporting and diagnosing problems in Thunderbird
-Plugins can now be loaded in RSS feeds by default
-Various other user interface fixes and improvements
-Support for Mac 32/64 bit Universal builds (Thunderbird Beta will no longer support PowerPC on Mac)
-and numerous other bug fixes

Firefox 5 beta Available

Mozilla released the beta version of Firefox 5 under rapid release development cycle and is available for download for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X platforms. It seems Firefox is following Google chrome by releasing new versions more rapidly but with less differences compared to the previous versions.

For Now Mozilla development cycle includes 3 main versions of Firefox :

1. Stable version for normal web-surfing.
2. Beta Channel : new features under testing.
3. Aurora channel : Introduces new features.

Also there is a nightly channel which shows the latest Firefox build that are released in the last 24 hours, but these are most likely un-stable.

Google to roll out Street View

Google has recently announced that Bangalore will be the first city in India, to have Google Street View. This will surely open a Pandora's box and will start of a few debates about privacy in India. If you are living in Bangalore, you might expect to get cars like in the image below buzzing about scanning the streets of Bangalore.

This might be a welcome move for street view fans, who can look up streets level imagery from their computers. But, Street View does not serve any real purpose except that it makes Google maps a lot more interactive and addictive.

Popular tourist destinations have probably found that such street view imagery with Google Maps might actually encourage more tourism.

Concerns on Privacy and Safety

Google Street View has had its fair share of controversies and some countries consider it illegal. It has been banned temporarily in Austria and Czech Republic.
It is not countries like Israel due to security issues cropping up.
The biggest controversy wallowed in certain as when Google collected and stored encrypted data from Wi-Fi connections in Germany. Google has apologised and said the data was picked up unintentionally. Since April 2011, Google has discontinued Street View in Germany.
There have also been some positive stories about Street View, like once when a teenager used it to help the police find two robbers.

Chinese company G'Five announced that it will launch Android and Windows software based tablet computers in India by end of June 2011. Said pc's will available below the price range of Rs 10,000 .

The company has plans to launch two 7 inches and 10 inches in size Android base tablet PC . The Windows model will be 10 inches in size.

Kingtech Electronics is fully owned Indian subsidiary of G''Five International.

"Both the Android and Windows-based tablet computing devices shall be launched in India," Arshit Pathak, Managing Director, Kingtech Electronics India said

"These shall be WiFi and 3G powered and the price range will be below Rs 10,000 - shattering the price barrier once again," Pathak said.

The new Bittorrent related service Fetch.io has been in the news ever since it was mentioned over at Torrentfreak two days ago. Fetch.io acts as a middleman by downloading torrents to their servers.

Fetch.io additionally supports file hosting websites such as Rapidshare, Filesonic or Megaupload besides torrents.

The service is currently offering free beta accounts that give users 20 Gigabytes of storage and 40 Gigabytes of bandwidth. You can get your bandwidth reset by emailing the developers.

The developers mentioned that they are starting to add more server hardware to improve overall performance of the service for all beta users.

Plans are to launch a paid service after the beta phase. There will still be a free account available for users to test the service, but the storage and bandwidth will likely be reduced. The fact that both torrent and file hosting sites are supported makes the service attractive, the pricing and payment options will however determine if the service will become a success, or if it will disappear like many others before it.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- As news of Osama bin Laden's death made its way across the globe Sunday night, Internet traffic exploded.
Twitter: At the news event's peak, Twitter said that users were sending off more than 4,000 tweets per second. That makes the volume of tweets surrounding the event either the second or third-highest in Twitter's history.

That volume is on par with the 4,064 tweets-per-second peak of this year's Super Bowl, but still far short of the 6,939 tweets per second record set when Japan brought in the 2011 new year.
Twitter recently has played an increasingly important role as a disseminator of breaking news, and the bin Laden story was another prime example.
Just before White House officials told the news media that bin Laden had been killed, Keith Urbahn, former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld's chief of staff, spread the word via Twitter.
"So I'm told by a reputable person they have killed Osama Bin Laden. Hot damn."
Urbahn later said he was tipped off by a well-connected network TV news producer.
Other news agencies quickly followed with tweets, and the microblogging site soon exploded with information about the event.
Urbahn was actually not the first to break the news. A Pakistani IT consultant named Sohaib Athar with the Twitter handle ReallyVirtual, who lives in the city of Abbottabad where bin Laden was killed, unwittingly live-tweeted the event as it was happening.
"A huge window shaking bang here in Abbottabad ... I hope its not the start of something nasty" Athar tweeted at about 5:00 p.m. ET on Sunday.
Google: Google Trends ranked the keywords "osama bin laden dead" as "volcanic," the highest level it assigns for a trending topic.
Sunday was not the first time that the term "osama bin laden dead" peaked on Google (GOOG, Fortune 500). On Sept. 24, 2006, a French newspaper l'Est Republicain reported a story supposedly based on leaked Saudi intelligence documents that said bin Laden had been killed a month earlier. The CIA and French governments quickly denounced that report as false.

Google, very recently, added a volley of themes in its mail service, Gmail. With the look of the mail pages looking cool with the humongous array of colors and characters, the theme gained instant popularity.

Now, Google hands over the makeover power in your hands! Taking personalization to a new level, Gmail now allows you to make your picture as the theme of your mail account, and have the color co-ordination redone, too.

To begin with, one would have to go to 'mail settings' option made available in the Options tab. Once there, users will have to select the option 'Themes'. Scrolling down that long list, users will find the coveted option of 'creating your own theme'. From there on, users can use their albums in Picasa to create the themes they like, or choose any random picture and use it to customize the main area and the footer of their Gmail pages.

Have you ever gotten a piece of email where you weren't listed as a recipient? Your email address wasn't present on either the "To:" line or the "Cc:" (Carbon Copy) line, but somehow you got it anyway. What you didn't see was what's called the "Blind Carbon Copy" line, or "Bcc:" which allows the sender to specify a list of people to get the message without their name appearing on it.

Why "carbon" and what's this about it being "blind"?

The term "Carbon Copy" dates from the pre-photocopy typewriter days where the way to make a second copy was to insert a sheet of carbon paper between two sheets of typewriter paper - when the typewriter struck an image of a letter on the top, it would also press an image through the carbon paper onto the second page.

In Outlook, there is a BCC field that's simply not visible by default. When you compose a message hit the View menu and you'll find an item labeled Bcc field which will turn it on. In Outlook Express, hit the View menu while composing a message and you'll see an item All Headers that does the same.

BCC can be a courtesy if used correctly. If you're sending email to a large number of people you can reduce the size of the message and the "To:" or "Cc:" headers that people might have to wade through by BCCing your message to them. On the other hand, it can also be somewhat rude to BCC what someone might think is a personal message to others as well.

Get Quick Launch toolbar back

1. Right-click the taskbar, choose Toolbars / New Toolbar
2. In the folder selection dialog, enter the following string and hit OK:

3. Turn off the "lock the taskbar" setting, and right-click on the divider. Make sure that "Show text" and "Show title" are disabled and the view is set to "small icons".
4. Use the dividers to rearrange the toolbar ordering to choice, and then lock the taskbar again.

Right-click on the taskbar and choose the properties dialog. Select the "small icons" checkbox and under the "taskbar buttons" setting, choose "combine when taskbar is full".

Microsoft shows future Windows running on ARM chip

LAS VEGAS -- Microsoft showed the next generation of Windows running on a different chip system today at the Consumer Electronics Show.

Steve Sinofsky, president of Windows division, gave a conceptual demonstration of Windows running on the ARM chip design, which is commonly used in the mobile computing world.

Sinofsky, speaking at a news conference at the show, did not show devices or provide dates or prices.

The ability of to run Windows on ARM chips means Windows could run on devices such as tablets at some point in the future. It also indicated a schism with Intel, the chip maker Microsoft has worked closely with throughout the history of Windows and the PC. ARM chip designs are now used in mobile phones and tablet devices.

"When you think of mobile devices and slates and what we think of as PCs, they've all converged" on the same hardware requirements, Sinofsky said, such as the amount of storage and processing power.

The mobile devices being shown so far this week have begun resembling PCs, such as a Motorola Atrix phone with a dual-core processor that AT&T announced this morning.

The Microsoft demonstration showed Word, PowerPoint and high definition video running on a prototype ARM chipset made by Texas Instruments, Nvidia.

"It's part of our plans for the next generation of Windows. That's all under the hood," Sinofsky said.

He seemed to indicate that Microsoft will not expand Windows Phone 7 platform to run on slates.

Google-branded Chrome OS netbook to launch on December 7th

The headline pretty much reveals the brunt of it, but indeed, it looks like next week Google is going to start talking about how its Chrome operating system is coming along. Multiple sources have told us that Google will be holding some sort of event on Tuesday, December 7th -- we're not sure if it'll be a live event, a webcast, or something else entirely -- and that the shindig will see the launch of that Google-branded Chrome OS netbook we've been hearing about. Again, we've heard that the Atom-powered laptop isn't going to be a mass market device -- there will only be around 65,000 units available to Google's closest "friends and family" -- and that the Cloud-based OS is still very much in a beta, non-consumer-friendly state. It's a bit odd that we still haven't received an invite to this planned event since it's purportedly days away, not to mention it conflicts with the All Things D: Dive Into Mobile Event, but at the time of publishing this post we had yet to hear back from Google's PR team with an official comment.

Export Mails From Thunderbird to .eml files

changing email programs is usually a challenge.

If your past email program is Mozilla Thunderbird and your future Outlook Express or another Windows email program, its not easy to move your mails from Thunderbird. Because Thunderbird still doesn't have an "Export" feature which would export mail archives in a format understandable by OE or Outlook.

There was one Addon named "smartsave". But same is not compatible with Thunderbird's latest version 3.1. Also there is no any special tool to do it. But don't worry today I am going to tell you about one tool, which will export all your mails with Local Folder Names.

Below is the step by step procedure to Moving messages from Thunderbird to Outlook Express and Outlook
Mozilla Thunderbird stores emails in the mbox format. Outlook Express stores email messages in propriatory *.dbx files but understands *.eml, which are plain text files. MS Outlook stores messages in *.pst files which are binary propriatory (Microsoft) files. Here are the steps you have to take:

1. Compact your Thunderbird folders (optional)

Thunderbird keeps messages in mbox files even after they have been deleted. If you don't want to include deleted messages in the conversion, you have to compact your folders in Thunderbird. Right click a folder and select "Compact This Folder". This will completely remove deleted messages from the folders mbox file.

2. Locate mbox files in Thunderbird

Thunderbird stores messages in the Profile Folder, in the Mail and (if you use IMAP) ImapMail folders. Each mail folder (Inbox, Sent, etc.) is stored as two files — one with no extension (e.g. INBOX), which is the mail file itself (in "mbox" format), and one with an .msf extension (e.g. INBOX.msf), which is the index (Mail Summary File) to the mail file.

3. Convert mbox files to eml files

IMAPSize has a built-in mbox2eml tool that can seemlesly convert thousands and thousands of messages. Download, install and run IMAPSize (it's free) and invoke the mbox2eml option from the Tools menu. Select the mbox file you wish to convert (you might need to set the "Files of type" option to "All Files" in the file selection dialog, since Thunderbird mbox files don't have an extension) and select a location where generated eml files should be stored. Click "Convert" and IMAPSize will start converting the files.

All the attachments will also be converted and your original Thunderbird files will not be touched. Starting from version 0.2.0. you can convert multiple mbox files at once.

4. Import generated eml files into Outlook Express

Launch Outlook Express and select the local folder (or create a new one) into which you want to import your messages. Open Windows Explorer or your favourite file manager, locate the generated eml files, select them and drag and drop them into the OE application window. If Outlook Express is your email client of choice you don't have to perform the next step.

5. Export files from OE to Outlook

Assuming you have Outlook installed on your system, open Outlook Express and from the File menu select Export/Messages. Once exported, the messages will appear in Outlook - if they were in your inbox in OE, they'll be added to your Outlook inbox; if they were in a local subfolder in OE, a folder of the same name will be created under your Outlook inbox.
