Google with it's updates has come harsh against article and PR directories. But it didn't take long for Google to understand that many people use Google for getting information. Google couldn't forget the fact that articles are an important part of search. And hence it has come up with an update - "in-depth articles". Now you can find a section called "In-depth Articles" in the first page of search result for generic queries. But how relevant are those results? Will it serve the way it is intended to be? The only way a webmaster gets to expose the services of his website is through the content on his webpage. Thin content was a norm before but now content has to be unique with rich information. It not only must be attractive but be worthy enough to keep a reader engaged. Quality content is a key to search engine rankings. In this case study, importance is given to Google since 83% of users prefer using Google to other search engines.

The number of search for the word content marketing has gained a lot of prominence in recent times. In the year 2013, the search trend has shown an increase in its results owing to the latest panda update that concentrated on quality content.

Hence creating quality content for your webpages has become the need of the hour. A rich content has the capacity to be informative and entertaining. This study is all about the importance of content, what Google expects from us and the ways to make content better.

WHAT IS GOOGLE’S STAND?

Search Engines always focus on good quality content and user-friendly experience. The panda updates by Google are aimed at providing quality information to users. Hence creating original and unique contents for your web pages becomes a top priority. Good content with optimized keywords are sure to drive a lot of traffic to your site.

“Our site quality algorithms are aimed at helping people find ‘high-quality’ sites by reducing the rankings of low-quality content” – Amit Singhal, Google.

Google always insists on the fact that “Content is King”. Thus creating quality content for your webpages is a must. 92% of marketers say that content creation is either “very effective” or “effective” in SEO point of view. Here’s what Google has to say about content creation and its importance.

Do not beat around the bush rather be crisp and unto the point. Always keep users in mind. If user finds the information irrelevant or non-informative, with the frequent updates in Google’s algorithms, be sure that Google will also rank you lower.
Content is far more important than trying to get backlinks. Because people tend to share content if it is of good quality and in this case you will receive backlinks naturally. Remember that 27 million pieces of online content are shared daily and your content needs to have quality to be one among them.
Google knows the difference between Natural and Unnatural links. If your content is worthwhile, obviously other sites would link to you thereby helping you to gain more traffic.
The content must not be stuffed with keywords. Over usage of keywords is a black hat technique and this will lead to the removal of your site from SERPs either temporarily or permanently. Instead maintain a good keyword ratio to be available to the users when they search for you.
Creation of blogs for your website is a must in the current scenario. According to a statistics by Marketing Sherpa reports, good content in your blogs lead to 2000% increase in blog traffic and 40% increase in revenue.
Concentrate on creating informative contents for your users. This may be of any form - how to articles, working manuals, product description, white papers and so on.
Multimedia elements are gaining lot of importance these days. Having a good image or video in your page gives the users a lot of information about you and hence positively affecting conversion rates.

HOW YOUR CONTENT SHOULD BE?

Good content is loved both by readers and robots. The content that you provide must have certain qualities so that it is acceptable and useful to your readers. A good content should be

Well Written – Your content should be free from grammatical and spelling errors. Formatting your content also plays a major role in retaining the users. Use headings and sub headings wherever needed. If you have a list, create it with bullets. 70% people look at lists with bullets more often than lists without bullets.
Unique – Your content should give something to the readers that they don’t get from any other sites. Make yourselves sure that you provide unique content so that the user is tempted to spend at least a few minutes on your sites. No one will love to read a content that they can get in a lot of websites.
Relevant – According to the Neilson Norman Group, the average internet user decides whether or not to leave a page within 10 seconds as users tend to scan a page rather than reading a page. So it is important that your content should be relevant of what they are looking for.
Original – The content you provide should be original. Copying from other web pages won’t help your cause and you will be penalized by the search engines as well.
Informative – A thorough research about what content you’re going to create is a must. The content should be highly informative and up to date. Respect the time spent by users on your web pages and be sure that once they finish reading, they don’t feel that it’s a waste of time.
Credible – People often look for contents that they can trust. This credibility can be increased by using a good writing format, using images, graphics and videos and by creating good out bound links. These links will convince the user that that the writer has done a good research on the topic and the content is credible.
Correct usage of Keywords – Think from people’s point of view and analyze which terms are more likely to be searched. Include these words in your content so that the search engine finds your useful document for the users. Be wise not to stuff these keywords unnecessarily.

CONTENT – FOR THE MODERN DIGITAL ERA

It is often misinterpreted that content is text. Content takes a lot of forms ranging from animations to video. Presenting your content in an effective way in this fast digital age becomes the first and fore most criteria for your content to be valuable. Even if your content has a lot of information, if it is not presented in the proper way, your content will definitely be blown away by the fierce information storm that is hitting the internet daily. Here are a few ways in which you can create effective contents.

Product descriptions – A clear description about the product you sell is an important form of content. Only people who intend to buy a particular product will read the product description. Make sure that you give them the required information precisely.
Guides and Manuals – They are the best forms of content to retain your customers and hence encouraging further purchases. They are viewed and downloaded more often and hence boost your online presence.
Slideshows – In the fast moving world, people are more interested in contents that provide much information in a short time. Slide shows score 10/10 in this criteria and hence providing your content in a slide show is a very good strategy.
News – Having a page for updating recent news about your industry is the need of the hour. This will increase the credibility of your business. Encouraging the users to subscribe for your newsletters will boost the traffic to a great extent.
Surveys and Case studies – People more often tend to read factual information. Conduct surveys among people about your business field and prepare case studies. This will increase the trust people have in you and provide good exposure to your brands.
White Papers – They attract lot of people’s attention as they provide information that can be trusted. 40% of marketers say whitepapers as effective strategy in content marketing. Preparing good and well researched whitepapers will greatly improve your authority in your particular niche.
Interviews – Posting interviews with eminent persons in your industry on your pages or blogs is another effective way of content marketing.
“How to” posts – A lot of people tend to search the internet with the terms “how to _______”. So preparing good “how to” posts attracts lot of users who are potential customers.
Infographics - 90% of information that comes to brain is visual. Hence more importance should be given to visual media. Infographics is one of the best ways to convey statistical information in a crystal clear view. A good infographic image gets viral in the social media and this in turn brings you lot of traffic.
Images and videos – Having an informative image or video in your web page retains customers more than plain texts. They are an effective way to convey information and can be used for brand awareness as well.
Blogging – Blogs have become a very important factor in content marketing. 329 million people read blogs each month and these people are your customers. Provide quality content to these people and they will more probably become your customer.

Only a few important forms of presenting your content in an effective way are explained above. There are a lot of other ways to experiment and implement which will prove effective.

FINALLY

The focus is back on quality content. Search engines, primarily Google, tries hard to provide its users quality and relevant content. Having good number of backlinks from quality sites won’t suffice. Your content has to be informative to your readers. The look at statistics reveals the overwhelming importance of content in both users’ and search engine’s point of view. They also show how people are interested in quality content and hence a website’s duty to provide it.

Also, Google, the search engine giant updates it algorithms more too often to have a quality check on the content. This will directly influence a site’s appearance in SERPs. Therefore providing quality content to satisfy the robots as well has become a key factor. Looking your content with the robot’s eye is now a must for webmasters.

The traditional equation of content=text holds no or only a little value now. In a fast moving world, a good content with less attraction goes unnoticed. Hence presenting your content in the most interesting way to retain the users has become very important. There are numerous ways to present your content in a user-friendly way. Adapting these will improve the value of your content a lot and improves the readability. It is predicted that $118.4 billion will be spent on content marketing and video in 2013 which shows the importance content marketing is going to gain in the near future. Why my Blog's Home Page Shows Only 1 Post?

Today I thought of sharing a small tip to bloggers. I encountered the problem a few days ago. I wrote a fairly long post with a lot of images, and when I hit "publish", it happened. Just one post in home page! I rechecked my settings. Everything ok. I have set to show 6 posts in homepage. The problem troubled me for a while and I found the solution after a few Google searches and here I'm sharing that.

The problem is that if you write a long post with lot of images, blogger takes it as multiple posts due to auto pagination. The solution is just a single step.

Everyone might be aware of the "Jump Break" option of Blogger. For newbies, for better understanding, here is the screen shot.

Just click that placing your cursor after a paragraph of your post. You're done. Now in you home page you'll see the number of posts you desire as snippets with images, giving your blog a professional look. Hope you liked this tip. Happy Blogging!!

How to Use Google's Disavow Tool

Webmasters always suffer from low quality links that point to their site without their knowledge. These low quality links are a kind of spam or may be a result of negative SEO tactics by your competitors and they can harm your site’s ranking in SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages). Hence you should remove unnatural backlinks. Google has announced the Disavow tool to help the webmasters in overcoming this issue and here is the step by step procedure on how to use this tool.

Step 1: Log in to your Webmasters account and Click “Search Traffic” on the left bar. Click “Links to Your Site”.

Step 2: You will find the links that point to your site under “Who links the most”. Click “more” and you will get a table of all links that point to your site.

Step 3: Download the table of all the external links by clicking the button “Download this table”.”Download latest links” will give you the list of links that linked to you recently. You can download this table in CSV format and as Google Docs as well.

Step 4: Carefully go through this table and make a list of the links that you find are unnatural. Have a close look at irrelevant sites, paid sites, malware attacked sites, link exchange sites, spam sites etc. Be vigilant in preparing this list as disavowing links that are useful, may nagatively affect your site’s performance.

Step 5: Save these unnatural links in a text document. There are certain standards in preparing this text document.

Use (.txt) file only. Other formats such as (.doc, .docx, .xlv, .csv) etc. are not valid.

White mentioning an individual link for disavowing, Use the following format.

E.g.:

http://malwaresite.com/badcontent.html

http://www.malwaresite.com/spam.html

The usage of “http://” is MANDATORY

If you want to disavow all the links that come from a particular domain, then follow the format below.

domain: malwaresite.com

“http://” or “www” should NOT be used.

Step 6: Once you are done with preparing this file, you have to submit it to Google. This can be done by following the steps given below.

Click the link https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/disavow-links-main?pli=1 and login with your username and password. Once entered into webmasters tool, click “Disavow Links”

The above page will appear. Choose the (.txt) file that you have created and click “Submit”. And now you’re done with disavowing the unnatural links that point to your site.

You can remove unnatural backlinks by following the above steps. For a good effect, it is recommended that this tool may be used once in two months. According to Google, the action based on your request will take a few months and manual submission of link removal is encouraged. But for bulk disavowing, this tool is highly useful.

Which is Best - PS4 or Xbox One?

PS4 vs. Xbox One is more of a battle between the top companies- Sony and Microsoft. Sony PlayStation has always managed to overcome the Microsoft Xbox each and every year, with its trendy and user friendly gaming experience.

The two gaming consoles vary in each every perspective, starting with the controller to the internal hardware. Even though both the consoles are associated with the same hardware specifications, they differ in their RAM type. PS4 makes use of DDR5 8GB RAM, whereas Xbox One uses DDR3 8GB RAM. The GPU in PS4 has a performance rate of over 50% better than that of Xbox One. The PS4 has even faster graphic memory than Xbox One, providing a better gaming experience.

Even though both the consoles have revolutionized their controllers and look a lot better than their predecessors, the PS4 controller includes a clickable touch pad, which provides the developer with better options. The major drawback with the Xbox One is that it requires an internet connection to play games and can’t play games offline. Sony has kept it simple as always, and simplicity correlated with excellence is what PS4 is all about. Another major pro benefiting Sony is that it owns the best game developer studios till date.

With both the consoles hitting the market in November, PS4 starts with a price of $399, whereas Xbox One opens with a relatively high price of $499. Xbox series is in its initial stages of development, and paying $499 for something that PS4 did several years ago isn’t going to take you anywhere. With a price $100 cheaper than Xbox One and 40% more power, PS4 clearly has the upper hand over Xbox One.

In Part 1, we have discussed about what is organic search, SERPs, etc. Now here's the important question. How search engines find the web pages? How are they organized?

There are two main process which helps the search engine to find web pages and store them so that it can retrieve the pages when you search for that particular page. They are crawling and indexing.

Crawling

This process is done by algorithms that are pre-defined by the search engines. These algorithms are more often called as web spiders or bots or crawlers. These web spiders crawl on web pages based on many factors such as Page Rank, back links and several other constraints. Well, what is a page rank? back link? We will see all these in subsequent parts. For now, crawlers are automatic bots used by search engines to crawl on webpages to find the information on it. So, why is crawling necessary? The answer

Indexing

Once the spiders crawl over the web pages, they are then arranged or indexed in the search engine databases. Once you make a query (you search for something), the search engine returns the specific pages which matches the your query from already indexed web pages.

For Google, if you want to index a page that you find good, you can do it by copying the URL of that particular page and click "submit" by following this link https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/submit-url

SEO for Beginners - Part 1 - The Search

When I told my friends that I'm working in an SEO company, the first question that my friends shot at me is "SEO?!! What's that?". This question is the reason why I'm making this post. I will post the basics of SEO in parts.So, here's the first part.

Well! I kept on repeating the word SEO in the first paragraph. What does it stand for? SEO - Search Engine Optimization. As simple as that. But when you dig it deep, you will find it to be an ever expanding and ever evolving universe.

First let's concentrate on the first two words of the expansion - Search Engine. What is a search engine? You may think me foolish of asking such a question. So, everyone knows what a search engine is. Now let's look at the following search result.

These pages those come up when you search for a particular query are known as SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages). In this particular page you can clearly see that the first two results are paid results and it has little or nothing to do in SEO point of view. The ones at the right, as marked, are paid advertisements. Again these too don't have any significance in SEO point of view. The main thing to be noted are the search results that are annotated with a purple box. This is known as organic search and optimizing your web pages to gain good position in these SERPs is SEO.

Hope you are now clear with the concept of search and search engines. Now, I ask you another question. How do search engines arrange these results? What's the process behind that? I'll tell you that in my next post. Stay tuned......

The First Buck I Earned

We were towards the end of our first week's training. It was a complete fun ride for everyone of us. The new world of SEO started showing its effects on us. We started wondering to ourselves when we used the words optimization, html, header tags, page rank etc. rather involuntarily. Thus we started diving into the deep sea of SEO.

We were more shocked than surprised when our CEO wanted us to do a Whitepaper on "Digital Marketing Industry Analysis". What is a whitepaper? I seriously had this doubt. I was such a dumbass!! And I had a sigh of relief when our CEO explained what exactly is a whitepaper. And we were all set for drafting our first whitepaper.

Our team was Christened Team-A. The work was not as easy as we thought. Where to start? and how to start? were the major doubts we had. Finally we decided to do some research on the topic and we shared the information gathered through Skype.

And then came the major task of analyzing various companies. We came across certain online tools by alexa.com and woorank.com which helped us a lot in analyzing the competitor websites. Using an online tool for the first time was just amazing. After three days of hard work, finally we have drafted our whitepaper and the day of presentation finally came.

We all were nervous. It worried us a little when we learnt that our CEO could't attend the presentation. We were called first and we entered the conference hall. We grew more nervous when we saw all the big heads there waiting to listen to our words. We started our presentation and we believed we did it well. What followed that is a series of queries, most of which we answered well.

After the presentation by Team-B, we all were invited to the conference hall. We were proud when our pluses were explained. We never even dreamt that we will get the first place. But that happened. I couldn't even believe my ears when I heard the announcement "The winners are getting a cash reward". What I heard was true. We, as a team received the prize and that was a huge sum - Rs.5000!!!

I got my share Rs.1250 and I wanted to reach my home as early as possible to share this happy news. Finally after 23 years of existence in this earth, I EARNED MY FIRST BUCK!!

I haven't told you who are included in the pronoun "WE" in this whole post. "WE = Asha, Ashwini, Meena and myself". MY FIRST TEAM!!!!!

The Evening Ride

It was 6 in the evening. After a long and tiring day at office I was happy to go home. I hurriedly came out of the office just to see a few of my colleagues already waiting for the lift. I had to walk all the way to ground floor by stairs and the bad time continued. My bike was unhappy with me for some reason. I could't start him. I wondered why he is troubling me even after I feed him petrol for 100 Rs. daily. May be he is angry with me for leaving him in the sun.Finally after a few harsh and censored words, and of course with a few brutal kicks he obeyed me.

I plugged in my earphone and played some random songs in high volume so that I can be out of this hectic world at least for another one hour. My bike accelerated and I was riding leisurely on the National Highway. Just then I felt a few drops of H2O falling on me. (That's just water right? I think I'm getting more chemical!!) Yup, in simple words, it started raining. Even though I love rain, I just didn't want it to soak me that day. But to my disappointment, it grew stronger and stronger and in no time I was completely drenched.

Knowing that I can't stop the rain, I decided to enjoy it. It was just pouring down and started to sing some random songs in high volume as I was sure that the whole world is mute because of the heavy downpour. I started enjoying my ride and I was already half way home. My ride continued with occasional interrupts from the high beams of opposing vehicles and the death pits that have more surface area than the road itself.

My joyous ride came to a sudden halt when I saw the traffic was jammed and all the vehicles were lined up. I had no idea what has happened. As a biker we always have the privilege of not waiting on any traffic. I went through the little spaces between cars, buses and trucks and what I saw shocked me to hell. God!! It was an accident. Blood and broken vehicle all over the place and I can't explain any further.

My journey thus ended with a heavy heart and the scene of the accident came to my eyes uninviting for a few days. I realized that even a single ride can't be happy from its beginning to end.This particular evening ride taught me a great lesson - NOTHING IS PERMANENT EXCEPT CHANGE.

That's how I Started my Career

It was on 2nd July, 2013. I was browsing through some pages in the web when I came across "Whitelake Technology Solutions". The name sounded familiar because they came to my college for campus recruitment. As I had nothing worthy to do, I browsed through the pages of the website and accidentally I saw this.

I thought for a while. Why shouldn't I send my resume? For the first time in my life, my thought process did me some good. That was the first time I tried to create a resume for me. It took a while to prepare my resume. Again my thought process interrupted me. "Hey Jeen, don't send it. You're not going to get this anyhow" - this time my thought process discouraged me. Finally I have sent my resume with zero hope.

The next day while I was helping my dad in his business I received a call. Little did I think that it was my interview call. I had a phone interview for about 20 minutes.The interviewer introduced himself as Guna. The questions were mainly targeted to check the genuineness of my resume. And then I heard the words I won't forget. "Jeenfer, why can't you come over here today?"

I said "OK" almost instinctively. I was asked to be at the office at 3 pm. That's when I realized that I'm no more a child. I gathered all my certificates and started for my first interview.I literally didn't know what an interview is. I didn't have any trainings on how to attend an interview. The only thing I knew about interview was that I should be formal.

After a few hours I was inside the lift. A strange feeling got into my mind - anxiety, excitement,or fear, well, I can't really explain that feeling. All I knew was, when the lift opens, I'll be in a new world. A world that is completely different; a world I'm not used to; a world that probably will be my new world.

I was brought back to the real world when the lift opened. There I am; the new world I always wanted to see. I went to the HR and got my resume verified. I was asked to attend a test. Well, that was very frightening for me. I didn't have any prior experience. I just backed myself to write that test. I hope I did it well. I was then asked to meet the CEO.

I entered the CEOs room. I felt confident that time and took my seat. The CEO introduced himself as Guna. That's when I came to know that Guna and CEO are one. That was quite funny for me. The other person in the room introduced himself as Karthick. The interview, unlike I thought was much fun. It was rather a conversation than an interview. I hoped that I convinced them that I can be selected.

The interview got over and I was sitting at the reception. What'll happen if I'm selected? I went to a quite little dream and that's when the HR told me, "Congratulations Jeenfer, you're selected". And that's how I got my first job!!!
