6 Easy Ways To Prevent Termites

1. Cracks in foundation walls. It only takes a crack 1/32 of an inch wide to give termites and other wood destroying insects hidden access to your home.

2. Leaking pipes and faucets. Termites as well as other insects, seek out moisture for survival. Leaking pipes can keep wood and soil continually damp and create a perfect home for termites.

3. Wood debris around and under a house. Pieces of scrap lumber or firewood kept next to a structure can support a colony of termites.

4. Sprinkler systems placed near the outside wall of a structure. Excessive watering can dilute pesticide treatments around foundation walls.

5. Flower planters. Planters allow hidden and direct access to unprotected siding and cracked stucco when built in direct contact with a house.

6. Trellises and wooden fences. If a trellis or wood fence touches soil and is in contact with a structure, it provides a direct link between the subterranean termites in the soil and wood in the structure.

All of these conditions are things that termites and termite inspectors look for, and so should the homeowner. By eliminating these conditions, you can reduce the risk of infestation. However, it is important to remember that all homes are at risk to termite infestation, and should be inspected by an experienced termite inspector at least once a year.

Argentine ants are found in southeastern parts of the U.S. and California. Argentine ant colonies can grow to monumental size. The ant gives off a musty odor when crushed. They prefer to eat sweets, but will eat almost anything including meats, eggs, oils and fats. Argentine ant colonies are located in wet environments near a food source.

Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants get their name because they excavate wood in order to build their nests. Their excavation results in smooth tunnels inside the wood. Carpenter ants range in size from one-quarter inch for a worker ant to up to three-quarters inch for a queen.

Habits

All species mainly attack wood that is or has been wet and damaged by mold. Even though these ants first invade wet, decayed wood, they may soon begin building paths through dry, undamaged wood. They usually come into buildings through cracks around doors, windows, or through holes for wires. They will also crawl along overhead wires, shrubs, or tree limbs that touch the building far above the ground.

Habitat

Carpenter ants build their nests outdoors in various wood sources, including tree stumps, firewood or landscaping. They need a constant water source to survive. They will enter homes through wet, damaged wood.

Threats

Carpenter ants damage wood through their nest building. If they gain entry to a structure, they pose a property threat.

Prevention:

Because carpenter ants require a water source, eliminate sources of moisture or standing water. Keep tree branches and other plants cut back from the house. Sometimes pests use these branches to get into your home. Make sure that there are no cracks or little openings around the bottom of your house. Sometimes pests use these to get into your home. Make sure that firewood and building materials are not stored next to your home. Pests like to build nests in stacks of wood.

Identify Powerdpost Beetles by Their Frass (Lyctid)

Powderpost beetles larvae excrete fecal material called frass which is mostly digested "sawdust." Differences in frass can help you identify the specific beetle pest.

*Round exit holes, 1/32 to 1/16-inch (0.6 to 1.5mm) in diameter.
*Flour-like frass under infested wood or sifting from exit holes.

Drywood Termites

The Drywood Termite not only eats the wood structure, but lives inside the wood structure. These insects will construct a virtual city within the wood, complete with galleries or tunnels to get around it. They can enter the home by flying in or being carried on previously infested wood, such as furniture or construction materials. Each year they swarm as a way of starting new colonies. Attic and eave areas are prime targets for new colonies, along with windowsills, baseboards, beams and doorframes. Any exterior wood that can be bored into is a good place to look for a colony. They can even attack furniture, paper, cloth, wallboard or any other cellulose material.
