Dan Holiday is working on a new story, when Suzy returns from Box 13, having been followed. It happens to be a detective, George Flitt, a particularly short of stature gentleman who sent an empty envelope through the mail, just to follow who picks it up, to find out where Dan is located. A Gilbert Bolton has hired Flitt to attend a party, to hopefully keep in eye on things, and possibly present bloodshed. Flitt has hired Dan to be his proxy at this party, to meet with Kennth Bolton. Gilbert thinks that Kennth might kill himself, as his father (Gilbert’s brother) killed himself, too. Dan is greeted by a Rita Martin, who takes him to Gilbert. Gilbert reinterates what’s up, then introduces Dan to Kennth. Suddenly, Rita takes Dan out on the balcony to monopolize his time. Dan realizes he’s being set-up, so he ditches Rita to spy on the party, where he thinks he sees Gilbert put something in Kenneth’s drink. Dan rushes in to knock the spilled drink on the floor. Suddenly, Gilbert seems a little annoyed, then Rita suggests they migrate the party to Gilbert’s penthouse, and tells Dan to follow him in his car. Dan calls the Star Times morgue, and realizes someone else is listening in. But dan gets enough information to think that Kennth’s father’s murder might have been a poisoning. On the way to the penthouse, Gilbert looses Dan, over some railroad tracks, but Dan and Flitt go to the Greenhill Park, what the penthouse supposedly overlooks. Dan and Flitt split up, to search the penthouses to try and find Gilbert. Dan gets there first, and leaves a message for Flitt with the elevator operator. Dan finds Rita at the penthouse door, and she refuses to let him in, telling him that he’s off the case, and should leave. Instead, Dan finds another entrance, and begins to eavesdrop. He can hear that Gilbert & Rita on the balcony are trying to push Kennth over, to make it look like a suicide. Gilbert knocks Kennth unconscious, and threatens to murder Dan, making it look like Kennth killed him before committing suicide. Gilbert explains that he and Rita have embezzled a lot of money, don’t want to get caught. Suddenly Flitt barges in, gets shot at my Gilbert, giving Dan enough time to knock out Gilbert, and get the situation under control. Dan calls the police to come in and clean up the mess. Flitt was only grazed, and Gilbert & Rita are being held until their trial. Flitt gets the last joke, as they go to credits.

The Voyage of The Scarlet Queen	“The Ninth Niece in the Street of Weeping Women”	7 March 2022	WFMU
Read by Austin Rich. Karney arrives in Shanghai for an important meeting with his boss, Ku Chei Kang. He is to learn the reason for the voyage that had already taken the Scarlet Queen over 8,000 danger-filled miles. When Karney arrives at the address, 28A Victoria Place, he doesn’t find the offices of Kang and Son, but rather Ye Old Cheshire Tea Shoppe and enters a world of deceit and intrigue where one false move could mean failure of the voyage and DEATH!The tea room proprietor, Mrs. Fenwick, has no helpful information, but a parrot in her menagerie of birds, is a salty talker. Mrs. Fenwick invites Karney to her home that evening, her nieces, aka hostesses will be there. The captain decides to string along, hoping to gain information on Kang’s location. While he leaving the tea room, Fern, a hostess, gives Karney her address and promises him an entertaining evening.Next, Karney goes to Kang’s home, but someone else has taken up residence, a Colonel Smythe-Forrester. The Colonel said he rented the home from the same agent from which Mrs. Fenwick rented the tea room: Mr. Yen of the Bubbling Well Realty Company. At the rental agency, Karney is given an obvious run-around by Yen and realizes that Fenwick, Smythe-Forrester, and Yen are working together and are most likely in the employ of Kang’s enemy, Constantino.After encountering more dead-ends on Kang’s whereabouts, the Captain locates Kang’s attorney, Mr. Wong. The lawyer offers him only a Chinese proverb to ponder about remaining calm when dealing with puzzling situations.Fern, the tea room hostess, is his next stop. Just before entering her apartment, Karney hears the parrot from the tea room and Fern says Mrs. Fenwick lives in the same building. He suggests that they go to Mrs. Fenwick’s party. As they enter Fenwick’s apartment, the old lady tells the younger woman to go see the other nieces.Smythe-Forrester and Yen are present as is the Parrot. They believe that if Karney calls the Parrot by name, it will supply a crucial clue to the location of the treasure that Kang seeks. Phil calls the bird, by his name, Yang Ku, but the parrot reveals no information. The Colonel tell Karney that Kang’s daughter, Nan Hua, has been kidnapped and Kang has gone to another city to negotiate the $10,000,000 ransom. Karney’s boss has liquidated his Shanghai holdings to raise part of the ransom. In a final attempt to get his adversary to cooperate, the Colonel reveals that Karney’s new chief mate, Mangan, is actually another Constantino henchman. The trio of Shanghai operatives don’t realize that Mangan, a man who they have never met, is dead and Red Gallagher is still his mate. The chief mate comes in and plays the role of their deceased confederate. The newcomer is left alone with Karney to get the needed information out of him. Red quickly tells his skipper that Nan Hua is actually being held in the building. Gallagher even knows the phrase to get the Parrot to speak to reveal supposedly important information: “Where away the Scarlet Queen”. Red then works over Karney to make it look like he beat the key words out of the captain. Mrs. Fenwick, The Colonel, and Yen return to hear Karney tell the parrot the special phrase that will disclose vital information about the treasure. Upon hearing Karney speak, the parrot replies with, “Awrrk! Where away … Steady on. Stink … steady on. Nan Hua … Nan Hua.” Red convinces the Colonel that Nan Hua will never give up the information of the prize Constantino and Kang seek to them, but she might give it to Karney. Yen is ordered to take Karney and Gallaqher to Nan Hua. When Karney and Nan Hua meet, Yen realizes that Gallagher has tricked them, shoots at Phil and runs to warn the Colonel. Red shoots and kills Yen. Karney, Nan Hua, and Red, take the parrot and waste no time in heading for the Scarlet Queen and about an hour later are on their way out to sea. Red tells Karney that Fern, Fenwick’s ninth niece, is Kang’s operative and helped him get the parrot to speak nonsense. The Queen is now on course for Swatow, where Karney is to meet Kang.
Chandu The Magician	“Dorothy Is Rescued”	6 July 1948	Mutual–Don Lee Network
Chandu, Dorothy, and her two children, Bob and Betty, escape from a room above a rug dealer, who tried to capture them and take them to Roxor. However, during their escape, Dorothy has gotten lost, and separated from the group, somehow. In a secret room underground, a band in playing for a group of thugs, where we find Chandu, Bob & Betty hiding out, too. Chandu has somehow brought them to this room, knowing something is about to happen. Chandu can understand the thugs, but uses the Psychic Summons so Bob and Betty can understand the native language too, as if it were English. Bob understands that the announcer on stage, next to the band, introduces exotic dancing girls, who seems to be selling them to different men. One girl for sale, Natasha, catches Bob’s eye, as she isn’t much older than Dot. Eventually they see Dorothy on the stage, being offered for sale, like the other girls. Chandu and Bob grab Dorothy, Dot, and Natasha, and rush out of the place, out on the street. Chandu sends Natasha to be looked after by one of his contacts, explaining that Natasha is from the Basque country, in the Pyrenees, and that she ran away to mark her fortune. Chandu suggests that they should put her on a boat and send her back home. Dorothy explains that two thugs tried to nab her, but she ditched them, and ducked into the first nice looking cafe she could find. She was immediately whisked away to a room full of girls, seemingly motivated by discovering that her name is Dorothy Regent. As they were about to prepare for their train ride to Cairo (their destination before Dorothy got lost), Chandu’s friend reveals that someone set the train on fire, and has killed 40 people in doing so.

Dimension X	“The Lost Race”	20 May 1950	NBC Radio
When humans started exploring the rest of the universe, they began to discover that there had been a race that had spread far and wide, and were now all gone. Meanwhile, after 103 days in flight, the deep space freighter Carillia comes out of overdrive near a system with a Sun, and three planets… a place not on any of Carillia’s star charts. The crew is doing a routine check before they move on, and find some of The Lost Race’s ruins, the first of their kind that are intact like this. As they are arguing about whether to stop or not, the ship has a major malfunction, and must be repaired from the ground. Now, they have to make a stop. They have a pretty rough landing, and the ship seems to have been damaged even more. Even worse, they were unable to send out an SOS, meaning that no one back home even knows where they are, nor will anyone come looking. The ship’s Powerman, Denton, starts acting up, and refuses to give estimates about how long it will take him to fix the ship. One of the crew finally fixes the video receiver, which means they can receive their mail and messages from their friends and family. Everyone is excited to get their mail and messages, but Denton doesn’t have any messages that day. He immediately gets angry, accuses the other crew of speaking to his girlfriend behind his back, and smashes up the communications devices on the ship, then leaves via the airlock. The Captain assembles some search parties, and they go out in search of Denton, as he is the only one that can repair the ship. In searching for Denton, they find some sort of amphitheater, with a huge screen, with a strange machine, and a symbol that is some sort of warning. In trying to figure out how to use the machine, they discover that the machine can project what they think is a 3D Television view of wherever the user is thinking about. However, they are distracted by an explosion near the ship. Someone has caused an explosion, damaging the main jets. The other search party has found Denton, which means that Denton is innocent. Other things are missing, too. Someone else is sabotaging them! The Captain decides that they should return to the amphitheater and the machine, so they can hopefully use it to find out how the ship was damaged. But this time, it doesn’t seem to work the same way. However, a cave-in reveals a burial chamber, with the remains of two of The Lost Race, the first discovery like this of it’s kind. These remains are a mother and a child, and the child is clearly mutated, different than the mother. The mother looks more like an ape, and the child looks like something new Returning to the machine in the amphitheater, they realize that it actually amplifies thoughts and projects them, and has nothing to do with communication. A theory is posed, that the Lost Race, able to see what everyone else is thinking, would rather die out than continue with the knowledge they were so sure of. They now realize that Denton must have damaged the ship somehow, after seeing in the machine his own thoughts amplified, and thinking that it confirmed his suspicions that his girlfriend is cheating on him with other crew members. However, Denton gets the drop on them, suggesting that he can escape on his own with a space lifeboat that he stole from the ship. Denton totally believes everything he saw on the machine, and wants to kill the crew of the ship. However, one of the crew shows Denton on the machine that the entire Space Guard is preparing to land on the planet, and that Denton has no chance to getting away. Denton tried to escape, but falls into the open burial chamber, dead. With Denton’s body next to the other two, it’s now clear that The Lost Race were worried that their own race mutating and evolving into humans, which suggests that they didn’t exactly die out, but died out rather than become human.

Dan receives a letter suggesting that his Box 13 advertisement sounds like a challenge, and that he should go to Bay City Pier to board the Ruthie Jay ship tonight, if he’s really looking for adventure. However, when he arrives, the boat is being guarded by a gunsel, Manny, who knocks Dan out. When Dan wakes up, he finds himself 15 miles out to sea, on a boat with Marie Gordon. She explains that she has chartered the boat, and Dan will catch swordfish and Marlin with the captain while she hides in her room, and Manny does… whatever, back on shore. After four days of fishing, Dan finally gets angry, and insists that he needs to go back to shore. Marie forces Dan into the dingy and makes him row to shore on his own. Meanwhile, Manny goes to meet someone named Edward B. Spalding, a Fence, who is waiting angrily for the goods that Marie had promised to deliver, and begins to threaten Manny. Dan makes it back to shore eventually, discovers that Suzy is missing, and that Edward is waiting for him. Dan tells Edward exactly what happened, and Edward believe him. Dan goes to The Star Times to see if they’ve heard anything about Suzy, and a clerk explains that Suzy went on a vacation, like Dan told her to do in his note he left for her. Dan didn’t send a note and doesn’t like what this suggests. Dan picks up all the mail left for him, and discovers that there’s a box with what sounds like a ticking sound inside, which he immediately takes to the police. However, they discover it’s full of jewels. Dan pieces together the smuggling plot: Marie is bringing jewels to Edward, who can then sell them to someone else. But now Edward is mad because Marie seems to be trying to run off with the jewels to sell to someone else. Dan tracks down the captain, to find that Edward and Manny had just done the same, and were looking for Marie, too. On his way, Dan runs into Manny outside Marie’s cabin, and knocks him out. Dan overhears Marie and Edward arguing, and Dan uses the advantage to knock out Edward. Marie tries to talk Dan into joining her, but Dan refuses. The police explain that they’ve been looking for these smuggler’s for a while, and they wanna thank Dan. Suzy comes back from her vacation to deliver the final zinger.
Charlie Barnet	Pompton Turnpike [Excerpt]
The Voyage of The Scarlet Queen	“The White Cargo Act & Ah Sin”	7 August 1947	Mutual
Heavily damaged and carrying a valuable Ginseng cargo, The Scarlet Queen limps into the port of Tientsin, China, with Alice on board, and the body of Ray, the man she killed. However, they don’t get far after docking, as the local Chinese military arrest the entire crew as soon as they pull up. The Colonel asks for the body of Ray, and Red disappears to retrieve the body. They find Alice, who has made herself to look like she’s been tortured, and claims that Phil killed Ray, and stole the Ginseng cargo from her. The Colonel greedily sides with Alice, and shoves Phil in a prison cell. Not much later, a heavily perfumed Chinese Man with a Charles Laughton accent introduces himself as Ah Sin, and takes Phil out of his cell. Ah Sin explains that he is incredibly rich and dishonest, and needs the assistance of an honest man. Ah Sin has moved Phil’s ship and has murdered The Colonel. Ah Sin takes Phil to an expensive house where Alice is waiting, and a Texan named Mangan is introduced as Ah Sin’s sidekick. Ah Sin explains that he intercepted a communication from Kang, deduced that The Scarlet Queen is probably in for a payday soon, and pulled strings to get Phil released from prison. Ah Sin also contacted Kang and Constantino separately, and each offered a reward for Phil: $5000 from Kang, and $10000 from Constantino. Phil claims he never told anyone about the true purpose of the Scarlet Queen. But Alice claims she was raped by Phil, who told her all the details afterwards. Phil is taken to a room with Gallagher in it, who Ah Sin also captured. They get some sleep, and in the morning Alice shows up and feeds them a convoluted story about double crosses that neither Phil or Gallagher believe, but she proceeds to break them out and take them to The Scarlet Queen. Mangan is there to ambush Phil, and shoots Alice, supposedly dead. Mangan explains his plan: to have him and a few Chinese men sign on the Scarlet Queen, so when they get to Kang, they can kidnap him for Constantino. A fight breaks out in the shadows of the ship, and Ah Sin shows up, explaining he has a crew of men in the shadows. Ah Sin would like to drop the matter entirely, if only Phil could offer a little something in return for the help Ah Sin has given him. Phil says he would have gladly traded the Ginseng if he still had it, to which Ah Sin is thrilled; in fact, Ah Sin already confiscated it from the Colonel earlier, and now had it to rights thanks to this conversation. Ah Sin sorts out getting Phil’s crew out of prison, and they set sail for Shanghai, with only enough repairs to get them to their next stop.

Chandu The Magician	“Hypnotic Persuasion”	5 July 1948	Mutual–Don Lee Network
Betty thinks it is her fault that her mother, Dot, was kidnapped. Chandu has gone to look for Dot, and the kids talk about how strange Chandu happens to be, discussing his past, the rumors, and his possible connection to magic. (In addition to summarizing the plot.) Betty decides to try and open the balcony window in their room, and is stopped by Bob. Chandu returns without Dot, to discover someone has been listening to Bob & Betty at the window. Chandu pulls him in the window, and uses his powers to make the intruder think he is seeing snakes about to attack him, and that a knife is about to fly at the intruder. He immediately reveals that Roxor hired him to kill Ben Ali, and then to kidnap Betty, too. As he is about to finish divulging his plan a knife is thrown at him by someone else, and both men run off. One of Chandu’s friends arrives, and explains that he saw Betty get taken, and tortured other men to get the information about where she was taken. Apparently, she was kidnapped to be sold on the slave market. Rumor has it that she tried to escape, but if so, is lost, on her own.
Dimension X	“Almost Human”	13 May 1950	NBC Radio
Duke is a gangster who is dating a woman named Lola, who wants to start her life over and get out of the criminal racket, and now works for a professor Blasserman, who has built a new robot named Junior. Duke uses a gun, and shows up to the place where Lola and The Professor work, and explains to Professor Blasserman that he’ll be hiding out with them for a while, and would like to spend some time with Junior. Both the Professor and Lola are upset, but Duke has the upper hand. Duke starts teaching Junior that humans are evil, in addition to what the Professor has taught him, and soon Junior revolts against the Professor, and kills him. Duke takes Lola and Junior to Charlie’s, and asks Charlie to scout out a new job, which Charlie says will take 50 men. But duke has his mind set on taking down a payroll truck, and with Junior’s help, is successful, too. Seeing Junior in action makes Charlie nervous, so Duke asks Junior to kill Charlie. Duke decides to leave Lola with Junior while he steps out to plan his last heist. Junior asks Lola to oil him, and in talking to her, realizes she thinks Duke is the smartest and the strongest, and that’s why she’s with him. Duke comes home to try and kill Junior, but Junior kills Duke instead, and comes to offer himself to Lola, who is horrified to find what Junior has done. Junior explains that he is “almost human,” and that maybe she could love him, anyway. She screams.

Dan Holiday is struggling to finish a story again, when Suzy returns with mail from Box 13, along with the author of this week’s postcard, Johnny Moran, who sells newspapers on the corner. Johnny takes Dan to the malt shop, where Johnny explains that his father, John Moran, has been held because they think he is involved in a jewelry robbery, after going to the Jeweler on behalf of his Neighbor Mrs. Grace Fuller, where police found half the loot from the robbery in his apartment. The DA says that the case is solid against John, and suggests both Dan and Johnny give up on the case. That night, Johnny calls Dan to explain that someone had broken into Johnny’s apartment, then hung up. Dan shows up to find Johnny gone. Dan talks to a neighbor, Grace Fuller, and accepts coffee from her. While they talk, and the coffee is drugged, which knocks Dan unconscious. Dan wakes up in an alley, after which the DA believes that Grace Fuller is now a suspect. Dan is about to go and talk to Johnny, only to discover that he’s been injured in a hit and run, and is now in the hospital. Dan visits him, but Johnny isn’t very helpful in his condition. Dan visits the woman who manages the rooms that the Morans and Grace Fuller lived in, to discover another person rented a room from her: Joe Cokley. Dan finds a ticket for a dance club in Joe’s old room, and visits the club, and finds Joe and Grace Fuller leaving the club, so he follows them to their hideout. Joe and Grace spill the beans after Dan gets them to fight, and the DA is outside, listening to the whole thing. They release John Moran, and Johnny comes to pay Dan and offer to take him out for another drink, but Suzy makes Dan stay and write instead.
Earl Hines	Boogie Woogie On St. Louis Blues [Excerpt]
The Voyage of The Scarlet Queen	“Lily in the Chimoipo Bar”	31 July 1947	Mutual
The Scarlet Queen requires some minor repairs that they couldn’t finish in Kobe, so they enter the Jinsen Harbor in Korea, unscheduled, hoping to avoid the usual drama of Kang and Constantino. Phil decides to go into the city, and finds The Chimoipo Bar, where he is charmed by the proprietor, Lily Swain. She tried to talk Phil into carrying a cargo of Ginseng to Tientsin, China, where it could be sold for an incredible profit. Lily introduces her beautiful daughter, Alice, who immediately starts trying to seduce Phil. Alice explains that she’s not really Lily’s daughter, and that the Ginseng is stolen, and there are people in town trying to recover the Ginseng. Alice suggests Phil should hold out for an extra $1000, and remember it was Alice that gave him the help. Alice says she’ll meet up with Phil later, and leaves when Lily returns with Ray, her partner, and paperwork for Phil to sign, outlining the contract for selling the Ginseng. Phil follows Alice’s advice, and Lily admits that she is desperate, and will offer more if that’s what it’ll take. Phil takes the job, and loads the cargo. When the cargo is loaded, Alice arrives and explains that someone game and murdered Lily and another employee. It turns out Ray is alive, but drunk. Phil brings Ray to the Queen. As they are getting ready to leave, and local swims up on the boat, as if they were about to board. Gallagher kills him, and set sail. After they are quite a way away from Jinsen, Alice begins to seduce Phil again. The next day, as they are sailing, they ship’s sails fall to the deck, and the rudder breaks. The local who swam up to the boat must have done more sabotage than anyone thought. Alice reveals that Lily had planned to double cross Phil: by taking out insurance on the shipment, and loading Phil with any old root and left rudderless at sea, Lily could collect insurance and still the Ginseng again, making more money. Alice says she was able to get the real Ginseng on board, but couldn’t stop the Pirates who were on the way. The pirates arrive, and says that they are coming aboard. Gallagher shoots, and they get into a firefight. The currents are in favor of the pirates, so Phil starts the motor, hoping that it would give them the edge to get out of range of this other ship, and it does. Alice claims that Ray died in the firefight, but Phil deduces that Alice killed him, and Lily, and was hoping Phil would still join her. Phil gets his crew to get the ship together enough to sail to Tientsin, where they would need some serious repairs. Gallagher and Phil try to decide what to do with Alice, the body of Ray, and the Ginseng, and come up with two options that both make them money and ditch Alice. They decide to flip a coin over drinks until they like the outcome of the flips, or until the get to the next destination.

Chandu The Magician	“The Rug Shop”	2 July 1948	Mutual–Don Lee Network
Dot, Betty & Bob find themselves in a room above a rug shop, and when they turn to talk to the new shopkeeper, they find that Chandu has followed them up the stairs. As they are discussing things, someone comes in who is on Chandu’s side, a man named Joseph, who was the man following Chandu. Joseph reveals a secret way out, and tells Chandu that The Princess is in Cairo, and that the shop keeper has killed Ben Ali, Chandu’s contact in Alexandria. Joseph suggests that everyone should dress in local clothes, so they are not easily found. Joseph leaves, and Chandu, Dot, Betty and Bob leave via the secret door to the street. Betty sees two men following them, and alerts Dot and Chandu to this. They hide and in an alley and split up the group so they can hide from the men better, and get to the mosque to meet up with Joseph again. But when they arrive at the mosque, Dot is missing.
Dimension X	“Knock”	6 May 1950	NBC Radio
Walter Falen wakes up to find itself alone in a room, when an alien – a Zan – knocks, then enters the room. The Zans have conquered Earth, and have murdered most other people and animals, to make the planet habitable for Zans. There are now samples of most of the animals, all living in a zoo, exhibiting examples of the local life on the planet the Zans now manage. The Zans are confused by the animals in the zoo die of old age. Walter explains that animals and people on Earth have to deal with the Grim Reaper, and The Zans – who live thousands and thousands of years – only deal with death when someone is killed. Walter is moved to the room of Grace Evans, the only two humans in the zoo. Walter is sort of fatalistic, since he lost his wife two years ago. The Zan suddenly decide, after careful consideration, that Walter must be killing them, and not the Grim Reaper. The Zan threaten Walter if he doesn’t stop killing the animals. Grace wants Walter to fight against the Zan, somehow, by pretending that maybe Walter does know how the animals are dying, but won’t give up the secret. The Zan torture Walter, and when the Zan threaten to torture Grace, Walter has a new idea for how to trick the Zan, and suggests he should show the Zan how to take care of the animals better. When Walter is returned to Grace, he looks visibly hurt. But the Zan come in, explaining that a Zan is now dead, and that they must leave, because the Grim Reaper will come for the Zan if hey don’t. Walter explains that he told the Zan that to keep the animals from dying you must pet them. Then he suggested that the Zan should pet the poisonous snakes. Once the Zan have left, Walther and Grace are left alone to do whatever they want. Grace gets mad and leaves, then comes back later to knock on the door, and live with Walter in his room.

While complaining about having made the wrong choice of career, since Dan hasn’t produced any new work, when Suzy returns from the Star Times with mail from Box 13. Dan receives some tickets to a radio broadcast, “Time For Drama” staring Gene Blake on FBC, with the word Please written in lipstick on the ticket. Dan accepts, and after the show bumps into Marvin Masterson, a washed-up famous actor who is now at a low ebb in his career. Dan finds another note asking for him to go to the Mayfair Restaurant, where he very obviously meets with Gene Blake, who explains that she is going to be murdered, and needs his protection. Suddenly Dan gets a call at the restaurant, from someone who sounds like Marvin Masterson, explaining that if he doesn’t ditch the girl, he will be murdered by someone in the restaurant. Dan and Gene leave separately, then he picks her up and takes her to the police, so they can protect her. Dan returns to the Mayfair Restaurant the next day, and finds Marvin Masterson, insisting that he have lunch with Dan. Again, Dan gets a call, but it’s from Gene Blake, explaining that she’s about to be murdered… and then is, while the clock chimes behind her. Dan rushes to Gene Blake’s home, and both the guard watching the house and Dan find Gene Blake dead, and that her neighbor is Marvin Masterson, and his daughter. Dan is interviewed by the police, where dan discovers that the body has been dead for much longer that thought. The call to Dan couldn’t have happened! Dan is sure he has all the clues he needs to solve the case, but it takes him a while to puzzle it out. He goes to the home of the Masterson’s, and accuses the Masterson’s of murder, where Dan hears the same clock chimes as he did on the phone. Dan also notices the Masterson’s have a very fancy record player, that can record as well as play. Dan searches the records, and this scares Marvin’s daughter, who spills the beans about what she did. Marvin shows up, and threatens Dan with a gun, but Dan knocks him out. The police take care of Masterson, and Dan now has a new story to write. However, a letter from his landlord reveals that Dan’s rent is past due.

The Voyage of The Scarlet Queen	“The Boston Geisha & Chesapeake Bay”	24 July 1947	Mutual
Phil arrives at Kobe Japan, where the city has suffered quite a bit since the last time he had been there. Phil lets the others out of leave, and camps out in his cabin, waiting for Kang’s contact, who s to meet him on the boat. Neilson and two others come back from leave, beaten up, and claim that Gallagher did it, and told everyone he’s jumping ship and staying in Kobe. Against his better judgement, Phil goes to the Rose Bar, where Gallagher had been, only to find Gallagher dead drunk in a room by himself. They fight about it, but Gallagher is pulling punches, and pretending to be more drunk than he is. When Gallagher pretends to take a punch from Phil and pass-out Gallagher in this room, Phil leaves him behind, puzzling over what’s up. Phil arrives at his boat to find trouble: one man runs from The Scarlet Queen, and Phil finds Kang’s messenger, Chalmers, wounded on the ship, with the dead body of McCallister on the floor of Phil’s cabin. As Phil dresses Chalmers wounds, he explains that the other man stole Chalmers briefcase, which contained the instructions and money for Phil inside. Phil searches McCallister’s body, and find’s a keyring that used to belong to Gallagher in the dead man’s pocket along with paper advertising The New Chicago Palace of Joyful Dancing. Phil corners the owner, Tallulah, and discovers that she seems to know quite a bit. She leads Phil to a room and tells him that “Chalmers,” who is actually McCallister, who works for Constantino, and has led Phil into a trap, and the real Chalmers is now dead. In the room, Phil finds both McCallister and Gallagher, who tie Phil down, and we discover that Tallulah was part of the con, too. McCallister begins to question Phil about the contents of the briefcase. Phil explains it’s a map of Chesapeake Bay, which makes no sense as a clue. Most of the thugs leave Phil tied up to be watched by one guy, while the rest retreat to Chalmers place, to look for more clues. After quite some time, Tallulah decides to seduce the thug watching Phil, waits for the thug to be completely distracted, kills him. Tallulah reveals that she is actually Phil’s contact, but couldn’t make a move with McCallister and his crew looking for Kang’s contact. So Tallulah saw Gallagher on leave, explained the situation, and together they come up with an idea: draw a map of Chesapeake Bay, put it in a briefcase, and give it to Chalmers to deliver. The decoy would then be stolen by McCallister and his gang. Tallulah unties Phil, but gives him a gun, and helps disguise it so he appears to still be tied up. Gallagher brings back McCallister and his gang, who want to question Phil for more details. A fight breaks out, and Phil and Gallagher knock everyone out. Gallagher has Kang’s instructions, so the next day they leave Kobe on their way to the next destination, sharing a drink together as they do.

Chandu The Magician	“Off To Egypt”	1 July 1948	Mutual–Don Lee Network
Chandu has suddenly taken Dot, Betty and Bob to Alexandria in Egypt, where no one seems to know how they got there. While they are wandering around the city, Dot notices that they are being followed. Chandu goes to a shop where he is supposed to meet someone named Ben Ali, who happens to be gone on a pilgrimage. Ben Ali is gone, and the new shopkeeper seems a little suspicious. They can no longer see the person following them, and Chandu believes that the follower might have the message for him. Dot, Betty and Bob are doing some shopping, and the new shopkeeper suggests they should see some very fancy rugs that are upstairs, and Chandu returns just in time to follow up after them. Once the door is closed, the new shopkeepers says aloud that Roxor will reward him well for capturing Chandu and the Regents.
Dimension X	“No Contact”	29 April 1950	NBC Radio
The Starcloud is getting ready to go on a mission to the planet Volta, which no ship has been able to reach. Once they reach a sort of “Galactic Barrier,” they never come back. Captain Thorson is getting ready to launch, but there’s a stowaway hiding in the sickbay: Charlie, an old space hand who has been on a bunch of missions, wants to go on one last mission, in spite of being denied to go. But Thorson refuses to have Charlie on the mission, and insists that they make Charlie the ground radio operator for this mission. With Collier on navigation, they successfully launch again. (Collier’s father was lost on one of the ships sent to the barrier.) Thorson goes to meet with Dr. Smithson, as they discuss theories as to what the Galactic Barrier might be. The Doctor warns Thorson that morale is low, and might get lower as the mission wears on. A little time passes, and in another meeting, The Doctor tells the Captain that about half the crew has come down with Space Blues, and Collier has certainly got a bad case: while no physical ailments, many of the crew are now showing a blue tint to their skin. They approach, and pass through, the barrier without any issues, and everyone is ready to celebrate. However, an emergency gauge finds dangerous radiation, but it’s coming from inside the ship. They use a Giger counter to track the radiation, and it leads to Collier’s quarters, where some sort of transmitter is sending out a signal. Collier denies everything upon questioning, but all evidence points to Collier having used the transmitter. Suddenly, another ship arrives, and Collier finally reveals that he is from Volta. Collier reveals that there have been Voltans on Earth for decades, and that most of the crew and men back on earth are secretly Voltans, and that only Thorson wasn’t in on the secret. Thorson runs off, and finds the Doctor, who reveals that humans who exhibit Space Blues are secretly Voltans. Thorson runs off again to the radio room, and manages to get a message to Charlie, who happens to be a Voltan, too. When others ask what happened to the Starcloud, Charlie says that there’s been “No Contact” with the ship.

Dan Holiday picks up a message from Box 13 from Suzy, which asks Dan to come to room 718 at the Bradford Hotel, from a woman named Agatha Marsh. He immediately meets with her, a very old woman, and discovers that there’s a dead body of a man named Michael O’Brien in her hotel room, and she’s afraid to call the police for fear of the rumors that will get spread around downtown. Agatha convinces Dan to move the body to the hotel hallway closet, just in time for Lt. Kling to arrive, and find nothing in her room. Kling leaves, and Agatha explains: she got room 718 by mistake when she should have had 817. Her room was intended for Tony Vascari, a local crime lord. Agatha called Kling in the hopes that he would loose any suspicions that might be raised if he searched her room, which worked. Agatha reveals that she wants to solve the case on her own. Dan leaves to go home, only to get a call from Agatha at 2 AM, explaining that she had confronted Vascari, and now someone was trying to get into her room. Dan goes to her room, but only finds a paper airplane on the desk. Dan realizes she’s been taken to the airport, goes to find her and a thug waiting to board a plane. Dan tries to talk his way through the situation, but it doesn’t work, so Agatha stabs the thug with her hatpin, giving Dan a chance to knock out the thug. She & Dan run off, and she explains that Vascari wants her on a plane, to get her out of town. Dan takes Agatha to the police station, where Agatha double crosses Dan, and blames him for everything, and leaves the police station on her own. As Lt. Kling questions Dan, he doesn’t believe Dan’s story, and eventually lets him go, too. Dan goes to the hotel, and finds Agatha in the closet where the dead body had been, put there by the thug that had previously tried to put her on a plane. Lt. Kling shows up, having followed Dan, but there is still no evidence to support Dan’s version of the story. Lt. Kling puts Agatha and Dan back in Agatha’s room, where she reveals to Dan that she was actually the killer, as she was about to bump off Dan. Agatha had just seen, “Arsenic & Old Lace,” and got the funny idea to commit a murder while on vacation. The coda explains that psychiatrists have determined she is, “batty as a loon.” It was her idea to try and pin the murder on Vascari, who then tried to get rid of her via airplane. At the very end, Suzy reveals that she has been fired from her job, and asks Dan to hire her as his secretary.
The Voyage of The Scarlet Queen	“The Spaniard & the Lascar Pirates”	17 July 1947	Mutual
15 Days out from Honolulu, The Scarlet Queen arrives at an Island that was a Japanese base at one point. Now there’s a small collection of houses, and not much else. Phil and Red are immediately met with hostility from a drunk local resident, who shoots Gallagher and tells them to leave. However, the drunk man’s wife, Nora Fairfield, rescues Phil and Gallagher, shoos her husband away, and begins to entertain the two new men, being a little flirty. She explains that there’s a crew of men on the island, from a boat that arrived and was wrecked not long ago. Nora introduces Phil to Captain Ramirez & Dr. Thomas Mitchum, from the wrecked boat. Quickly it becomes clear that Ramirez is a pirate, and plans to take The Scarlet Queen from Phil. Phil takes Gallagher back to The Scarlet Queen, arms the crew with guns, and then returns by boat back to the island, to sit at the dock to keep an eye on anyone who might try to leave the island and take the Queen. Nora arrives and tries to lay it on thick, in an effort to get Phil to want to take her from the Island. Phil slaps her around and then makes out with her, but then she leaves. While Phil is continuing his watch, he is attacked by two men who Chloroform him. While Phil passes out, he hears the men put a boat in the water, supposedly making their way to The Scarlet Queen. Phil wakes up, and finds himself being tended by The Doctor. Phil discovers that his ship has been stolen. The Doctor was supposed to kill Phil to ensure a ride from Ramirez, but instead merely knocked Phil out, which was considered a betrayal by Ramirez, who left The Doctor behind with Phil when it left. Phil climbs the highest mountain on the island to see if he can spot The Scarlet Queen, but the ship is gone. He decides to try and find Nora to get more information about what happened, but instead finds Ramirez, who apparently has been abandoned by his crew. Ramirez says that Nora took the Queen. A huge wind arrives, and Ramirez explains that it is a typhoon, and that they will need better shelter to make it through the storm. They decide to help each other, to survive the storm. The Doctor, and Fairfield (Nora’s husband) all come out to huddle together, to find shelter together. The Doctor gets hurt, and dies. They get past the storm and find a trail that leads to a bay where The Queen is docked. Suddenly, the alliance drops, and Ramirez says he’s gonna take the queen. A fight breaks out, and Ramirez gets beaten up by Phil. Nora tried to con Gallagher into thinking that Phil was gonna take her on, but since Phil was supposed to be dead, she could work on Gallagher, and they could live on the Queen together. Phil decides to leave everyone on the island as he found them, and leaves on The Queen immediately. Phil and Gallagher have a drink and discuss going into Kobe, Japan ASAP.

Chandu The Magician	“The Psychic Summons”	30 June 1948	Mutual–Don Lee Network
Having discovered that some of Robert Regent’s documents have been stolen from Robert’s secret hideout, Chandu gets a Psychic Summons, where they see in Chandu’s crystal ball a woman, A Princess, that Chandu knows, being confronted by a sorceror named Roxor. Roxor suggests that Robert Regent might be alive. Dot is pretty sure that Robert must be dead, but perhaps not? Chandu believes that traveling to Egypt would allow him to search for the missing documents AND find The Princess from the psychic message. While Dot and the kids will be following Chandu, it happens that a man was listening in to their plans.
Dimension X	“Report on the Barnhouse Effect”	22 April 1950	NBC Radio
George Clinton is filing a report on Professor Barnhouse, who has developed a power that allows him to accomplish strange and catastrophic things with his own mind – dynamo-psychism. Barnhouse illustrates his power by using dice, and rolls 7s over and over again. Barnhouse had made the change from someone who merely looks like he’s thinking deeply about how to change the world, to someone who thinks deeply and changes the world around him. When he uses this power, there’s a small noise just before. It also happens that Barnhouse can accidentally destroy things, if he just idly thinks about it. Barnhouse contacts the government, with the hopes that he can use this power to do some good. Barnhouse is immediately captured, to be used as a tool of the government. He takes issue with the government ideas, as they cost too much, and want to only use him to cause destruction. The experiments are a resounding success, and Barnhouse is more powerful than they thought. But Professor Barnhouse escapes in the confusion of the government tests. According to Clinton, Barnhouse begins to systematically stop all weapons in every country on the planet. Once a weapon is reported and publicly known, Barnhouse destroys it immediately. The government enlists Clinton to find Barnhouse, as they are now concerned that another country will capture Barnhouse and use him against us. The hunt for Barnhouse is on, and Clinton has taken up using Barnhouse’s office as his own, where Clinton is rolling Barnhouse’s dice, too. Barnhouse has been taken by two enemy agents, and while their plane takes off, Barnhouse does destroy the plane, and himself in the process. The force of the explosion somehow hit Clinton. Afterwards, Clinton is filing the report on what happened, and notices that he is only rolling 7s, now, just like Barnhouse was.

Dan goes to the Star Times to get his messages for Box 13 from Suzy, and gets an anonymous offer to meet at 7th & Main, where he is delivered to meet Abner Blake, an investigator for Northern Insurance, that is looking to break a case regarding Max Alexander’s Widow. Dan takes the job, visiting the first widow, and then plans a trip to Albuquerque to speak with the daughter, Kathy. However, once Dan is on the case, a mysterious gentleman named Spencer with a quiet thug arrives to request that Dan forget the case… or there will be trouble. Dan doesn’t take the threat easily, and continues to Albuquerque to find plenty of trouble, Kathy… and possibly, he quarry?
The Voyage of The Scarlet Queen	“Report of the White Jade Buddha”	10 July 1947	Mutual
13 Days out of San Franscico, The Scarlet Queen finds itself in Honolulu, waiting for instructions to the next port of call from Kang, while Phil restocks the ship’s supplies. Then Phil and Red are immediately invited to join Bradbury on his ship, which raises Phil and Red’s suspicions. (This could be another attempt to interfere with The Scarlet Queen by Constantino. As it happens, Bradbury and his Nephew, Cyril, happen to be on the lam, are penniless, and need someone to sell a valuable jade statue to obtain the money they need to get back home. Phil found an Opal Earning on the way to he meeting with Bradbury. After showing the earring to Bradbury, he suggests Phil keep it, for luck. Phil and Red take the job against their better judgement, but the statue was rigged to kill the buyer, which seems like sabotage to our heroes. Phil and Red decide to retreat to where they were supposed to get their instructions from Kang, but find Cyril the nephew and an attractive woman named Clair instead, with a huge crew of thugs. The contact isn’t around, but Red joins in on a poker game while Phil has a drink makes time with Clair, assuming this is normal. However, when the contact arrives, the crew of men immediately kill the interloper. When Phil and Gallagher try to suss out what happened, one of the thugs says that tossing them in this mess was payback for Gallagher’s double-cross in San Francisco, and the thugs take Gallagher with them. Now it looks like Phil has killed two people in Honolulu, which should make it difficult for them to leave. Phil finds a message on the dead messenger that is for him, which explains that the jade statue buyer – who is now dead – was Phil’s contact to get Kang’s instructions. Phil returns to where he met with jade statue buyer anyway, to find that the shop was open, and an extremely helpful clerk gives Phil Kang’s new instructions to go to Japan, with money and a set of numbers that Phil must memorize. This Helpful Clerk has cleaned up the body, and has misled the police and Bradbury into thinking that the Jade Statue Buyer is alive, but out of town. The Helpful Clerk then directly Phil to The Farmhouse, where Bradbury and Cyril might have taken Gallagher. The Farmhouse is a night club, and Phil arrives to find Gallagher with Cyril & Clair together. It appears Gallagher has betrayed Phil. Cyril insists on getting Kang’s instructions from Phil. A fight breaks out, and in the confusion, Clair betrays her gang, and sneaks out with Phil. They hide out at a beach bar and make out to pass the time, but Phil quickly figures out that she’s waiting for someone to arrive, and realizes he’s in a trap. However, when Bradbury arrives, Clair betrays Bradbury, and suggests that she’s gonna stick with Phil now, and leave Bradbury behind. Bradbury believes he’s got the upper hand, as Gallagher arrives, who apparently drove Bradbury to this meet-up. But Gallagher has double-crossed Bradbury. A fight breaks out, Clair accidentally kills Bradbury, and fleas the scene. Gallagher explains: after he was taken from Phil earlier, Clair moved in on Gallagher to try and get him on her side, and he noticed she had an Opal Earring that matched the one Phil found on Bradbury’s boat earlier. Clair was willing to double cross anyone, and her offer to split Kang’s reward with Gallagher and to join up with Constantino would probably leave Gallagher high and dry. So Gallagher went out of his way to make Cyril and Bradbury think he was betraying Phil, so he could double cross them later. While there were a couple murders that could be pinned on them, Gallagher and Phil leave Honolulu before the morning comes. They set a new course for an island between Honolulu and Japan, and start in on a drink to close things out.

Chandu The Magician	“Robert Regent’s Secret”	29 June 1948	Mutual–Don Lee Network
After Chandu (Frank) returned to see Dorothy Regent and her kids, Bob & Betty. Dorothy’s husband, Robert was friends with Chandu, but has gone missing. Chandu immediately wants to see Robert’s workshop, where Chandu discover’s an envelope, which contains some formulas that Robert discovered. They might be dangerous, so Chandu decides to destroy the documents… except that the seal has been tampered. Someone has stolen Robert’s Formulas!
Dimension X	“With Folded Hands”	15 April 1950	NBC Radio
Harry Underhill manages a business that sells “mechanicals” in the year 2006. But the Underhill model is old and clunky, that barely work properly. Unfortunately, there’s a new model of mechanical on the market, and Mr. Underhill’s clients are all canceling quickly. On the way home, Mr. Underhill sees a new building he never noticed before: Humanoid Institute from Wing 4, and they sell and make mechanicals too, which look and act like human beings, much better than Mr. Underhill’s mechanicals. Meanwhile, Mr. Underhill’s wife, Aurora, has taken in a border, and inventor named Mr. Sledge. He’s a refugee from Wing 4, who had come to Earth to get away from the Humanoid Institute mechanicals. It isn’t long before Mr. Underhill’s business folds and is taken over by Human Institute. Mr. Underhill is offered a free Humanoid to help around the house, and refuses… but Aurora has accepted. Mr. Underhill’s son hates it, as the mechanical has taken away all his favorite toys, and Mr. Underhill isn’t happy, as the humanoid took away his alcohol. Even Aurora is unhappy, because she’s bored without any chores all day. Mr. Sledge tries to invent a new weapon that might be able to finally destroy the Humanoids. Mr. Sledge reveals that he invented the humanoids in the first place back on Wing 4, and has made it his duty to destroy them. He unleashes he new weapon, and it seems to work at first. But soon it is clear that it did not, and a humanoid breaks into break up Mr. Sledge’s gathering. Mr. Sledge is injured, but the humanoids take him and fix him, while also lobotomizing him. Dan Holiday will do anything or go anywhere for an adventure, so his ad says, according to Suzy, who works at the Star Times, and gives Dan his messages. The first response he receives reads, “You can help a person out of great trouble and gain an adventure for yourself if you call Chester-8945 and ask for Carla Williams.” Dan finds out Carla has been blackmailed for five years but tonight is supposed to be the last payment and she wants Dan to go with her. However, through a series of events, Dan discovers more than he bargains for.
The Voyage of The Scarlet Queen	“The Shanghai Secret	3 July 1947	Mutual
Phil Carney has arrived in San Francisco, where he’s unloading cargo from his ship, The Scarlet Queen. However, the police detain Phil, as his first mate – David R. Malone – has been murdered, and Phil is wanted for questioning. Phil has only known David for five days, but has been working all day with four other seamen. Malone was tortured, and the police suspect Phil, as he got $50,000 recently, won in a card game. Phil’s accountant, L.B. Funston. The police can’t pin anything on him, so after some convenient exposition where we get to know Phil Carney, Phil is released. As it happens, a person named Kang has hired Phil while in Shanghai, and warned Phil of an “opposition” who might try to stop Phil, in the form of Constantino, based in Hong Kong. Kang has a lead on a $10 million dollar treasure somewhere in the South Pacific. Phil suspects that David was tortured to discover where the treasure was. While Phil is considering all of this, a gentleman by the name of Red Gallager shows up, and offers to become Phil’s first mate. Gallagher seems to know the general destination of The Scarlet Queen, and this raises Phil’s suspicions. Phil sends Gallagher away, then searches Malone’s clothes, to find a clue, in the form of a matchbook with a woman’s name, and a room number: 218 at the Crown Hotel. (Where Malone was found.) This sends Phil off to find Helen at the Gorgonio, bar, associated with the Hotel. Phil chats up the piano player, who was apparently was Helen, and immediately makes a call once Phill starts nosing around. Phil decided to investigate room 218, only to discover that Gallagher is now staying in that room. But Gallagher knows Malones murderer: Mr. Fox, who apparently works with Constantino. Mr. Fox offered to pay Gallagher to sign on with Phil Carney to get information about The Scarlet Queen’s ultimate destination for Constantino However, Gallagher decides to double cross Mr. Fox, to help Phil get Malone’s killer and to secure the deal as first mate. Gallagher calls Helen and baits the hook, saying that he knows where Phil is, and that the better play is for Helen to seduce Phil. Helen meets up with Phil to make the play, to soften him up. Gallagher brings Mr. Fox around, who happens to be L.B. Funston, Phil’s accountant! Funston decides to double-cross Constantino, in an effort to get a bigger cash payout from Phil. But Gallagher and Phil quickly leap into action and subdue both Funston and Helen. Apparently, banking was the perfect cover to get plenty of details to implement Funston’s plan. Phil calls the police, who wrap things up… but Constantino is still at large. Phil takes on Gallagher as his first mate, and they leave San Francisco on their way to Honolulu, their next destination. Gallagher and Phil share a bottle as Gallagher steers the Scarlet Queen for the first time.
