Since returning to Australia after living in the USA for 8 years, I have noticed a significant increase in the number of women in mining as I travel around the country. In what was once a male dominated industry, its refreshing to see the positive impact this is having in the industry, in addition to helping solve the issue of scarcity of skilled resources.

What are other strategies mining companies are using to combat skills shortages? What impact is this new influx of women having in the mining world?

"Many plant managers are looking to predictive maintenance to reduce unplanned downtime and keep equipment running at full capacity," she writes.

But while mining companies see the value of predictive maintenance to keep their heavy-asset fleets available, the article continues, they often are overwhelmed by too much data and not enough useful information. This is a historic time to be in a carreer in maintenance! With commodity prices dropping and production costs rising, maintenance expense is a great target area to help your company, and those with ideas on how to save money are in demand.

Managers are making very personal decisions lately, like what can they do to avoid having to lay people off? Two Dingo customers recently shared their tough choices with us, one in Kentucky, one in Queensland, both in mining.

Condition Based Asset Management, is simply a lower cost way to maintain equipment. It makes sense; fewer expensive unplanned breakdowns and well maintained assets lasting longer translate into lower costs. In this environment, that could mean the difference between keeping loyal employees or not.
