4th Annual Marriage Enrichment Conf - Sat., Mar. 12, 2011

"The Incredible Adventure of Sacramental Marriage" will be held on March 12, 2011. All married couples are invited to IMET’s Fourth Annual Marriage Enrichment Conference at Illinois Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois on March 12. IMET is a consortium of seven DuPage County parishes in the Diocese of Joliet who have banded together to offer high quality marriage enrichment opportunities.

The event will take place at the Krasa Center at Illinois Benedictine University from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost will be $30 per couple. The presenters, George and Judy Clark, have been leaders in the field of marriage and family ministry for over 30 years.

Catholic Engaged Encounter is designed to help couples prepare for marriage. It is an intensive weekend of work during which each couple is offered the time and opportunity to question, examine, and deepen their relationship with each other and with God. Couples are challenged to explore their relationship in a much deeper, more honest way than they have been before. Topics covered include self-awareness, human sexuality, communications, decision making, Natural Family Planning, vocation, sacrament, unity and more. Personal reflection and communication are the main focus. Engaged Encounter is approved by the Diocese of Joliet as a marriage preparation program.

Please note: the price of the Catholic Engaged Encounter Weekend in the Joliet Diocese will be increased to $195 as of the September 2010 weekend. It is still substantially below the average cost of the Engaged Encounter Weekend across the country. As in the past, no couple will ever be turned away from the weekend because of an inability to pay.

Inclement Weather Closing - Wed., Feb. 2, 2011

Due to the impending blizzard warning for the entire Chicago area, the Chancery, Tribunal and Pastoral Center will close at 1:00 p.m. today (Tuesday, 2/1/2011), and will also be closed tomorrow (Wednesday, 2/2/2011). We are planning on being open on Thursday (2/3/2011), however, just in case the weather conditions are still very poor, feel free to check the diocesan website on Thursday morning.

Program for Implementation of 3rd Ed. Roman Missal, Jan. - Nov., 2011

The Roman Missal, Third Edition, the ritual text containing prayers and instructions for the celebration of the Mass, has been approved by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. Divorce, death, and other lifealtering crises are devastating experiences and often put family members at risk for a multitude of short and long-term negative effects. However, research findings also indicate that with proper intervention, families adjust to the loss and recover well. The RAINBOWS® program continues to offer healing to families experiencing these losses.

RAINBOWS® is a program which provides support for children and adolescents who are grieving a loss from a life altering crisis such as death or divorce. RAINBOWS® enables those grieving to share their feelings in an accepting, supportive, confidential small group environment facilitated by trained, caring and compassionate adults. Program sites may send their volunteers to the following training sessions at the St. Charles Pastoral Center in Romeoville. Pre-registration is required. The University of St. Francis Theology Department and the student organization Theology on Campus are sponsoring a Year of the Eucharist speaker series. There is a lecture scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010, at 7:00 p.m. in the Moes Room. Fr. Thomas Loya will speak on "The Eucharist in the Byzantine Tradition."

The lecture series will take place on the campus located in Joliet. The speakers will direct their comments to the undergraduate students of the university. We do invite others from the USF community and from the Joliet (local) community to participate in this series. See flyer.

Without attention and care, marriages wither. Couples slowly drift apart or are torn apart by terrible words and actions. Retrouvaille is helping couples put the pieces back together and rebuild loving relationships. Retrouvaille, pronounced "re tro vi", is a French word meaning "rediscovery."

Retrouvaille begins with a weekend experience, led by trained married couples and a priest. Through presentations, private reflection, and couple communication, couples who are seriously troubled and who may be contemplating divorce are invited to reflect on their marriage and what they need to do to save it.

"Single Through Loss" Winter Gathering - Sat., Dec. 4, 2010

WHAT: Single Through Loss (STL) Second Winter Gathering Event

The Single through Loss (STL) Committee will hold its second winter gathering event this December 4th. The featured speaker will be Ted Welsch, Psy.D. A licensed clinical psychologist, Dr. Welsch provides therapy for adults, adolescents, couples and families. He believes that each person has vast resources for growth and development, along with remarkable resiliency. The program will begin at 1:00 p.m. and end at 4:00 p.m. with the celebration of Holy Mass. Please go to www.singlethroughloss.org for more details and to register.

An inter-parish committee of the Diocese of Joliet, STL members include support group leaders of "Divorce and Beyond," the "Joyful Again" widowed ministry, and other peer support groups in the diocese. STL was initiated and is endorsed by the Center for Family Ministry of the Diocese of Joliet. Plans are to rotate meeting locations throughout the diocese.

STL’s mission is to provide spiritual enrichment and networking opportunities for widowed or divorced Catholics who have passed through the initial stages of grief with the help of a support group and are ready to begin a new chapter in their lives. STL meetings are open to individuals of all denominations who are respectful of faith-based values.

The first event, "Holiday for Soles," brought together more than 40 singles to share the celebration of Mass, to hear an interactive presentation on holiday stress, and to enjoy food and fellowship. See Fall 2010 newsletter.

EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS

As you know, we had planned to conclude our Diocesan Year of the Eucharist with a Eucharistic Congress at Lewis University on the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of the Lord (June 26, 2011). However, circumstances have changed to the degree that the Steering Committee has recommended that we revise our plans and develop another way of marking the conclusion of the Eucharistic Year. After prayerful consideration, we have accepted their recommendation and therefore we will not be holding a Eucharistic Congress in June.

The Steering Committee suggested that in place of the Congress, each parish be encouraged to have a Eucharistic Procession, Adoration and Benediction on June 26, following their last morning Mass. We think this is a wonderful recommendation, and we encourage you to implement this proposal in your parish. Parishes within walking distance of each other may wish to join together for this celebration, the procession leading from one parish to another. Many parishes had similar Eucharistic devotion on the Feast of Corpus Christi during the Great Jubilee of 2000. We hope that with these local observances, many more of your parishioners will be able to participate. Also, carrying the Blessed Sacrament through the streets of our neighborhoods will be a powerful witness to the centrality of the Eucharist in our Catholic faith and life, perhaps serving as an opportunity for renewal for non-practicing Catholics and evangelization for those who do not share our faith.

The various Action Committees of the Year of the Eucharist Steering Committee will provide the necessary materials and assistance to make this celebration as fruitful as possible for your parish. Thank you for all you have done in promoting our Diocesan Year of the Eucharist in your parish community, and we will be grateful for your efforts in supporting the closing Eucharistic Devotions on June 26.

Father Joseph Tapella, the Judicial Vicar of the Joliet Diocesan Tribunal, and Desirée Marciani, the associate director of The Center for Family Ministry, will conduct an annulment information seminar, on Saturday, November 13, 2010, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the St. Charles Pastoral Center in Romeoville. People interested in petitioning for annulment, those already in the process, and those who are just curious about the process are welcome to attend. The annulment process will be explained and all questions will be welcomed. This day does not start the process but offers a friendly atmosphere to learn what annulment means and what is entailed in the process. During the day those in attendance will have a "hands-on" review of the Joliet diocesan annulment paperwork. Kindly pre-register by November 8. All families and individuals are welcome to attend this Mass, celebrated by Bishop Imesch, at St. Charles Pastoral Center in Romeoville in remembrance of babies who have been lost through miscarriage, stillbirth, infant death, other pregnancy losses or early childhood death. At 3:00 p.m., a special outdoor tree-lighting ceremony for family members to commemorate these babies will precede the mass. Family members may wish to arrive at 2:30 to sign in and to gather in the chapel. Friends and all family members are invited. A reception with light refreshments will be served immediately following. The University of St. Francis Theology Department and the student organization Theology on Campus are sponsoring a Year of the Eucharist speaker series. There is a lecture scheduled for Monday, Oct. 25, 2010, at 7:00 p.m. in the Turk Theater. Fr. Jankowski will speak on "The Biblical Foundations for the Eucharist" (Old and New Testament references to feeding and their importance for understanding the Eucharist).

The lecture series will take place on the campus located in Joliet. The speakers will direct their comments to the undergraduate students of the university. We do invite others from the USF community and from the Joliet (local) community to participate in this series. See flyer.

2011 weekends: Feb. 11-13, Mar 11-13, Apr 8-10, May 13-15

Catholic Engaged Encounter is designed to help couples prepare for marriage. It is an intensive weekend of work during which each couple is offered the time and opportunity to question, examine, and deepen their relationship with each other and with God. Couples are challenged to explore their relationship in a much deeper, more honest way than they have been before. Topics covered include self-awareness, human sexuality, communications, decision making, Natural Family Planning, vocation, sacrament, unity and more. Personal reflection and communication are the main focus. Engaged Encounter is approved by the Diocese of Joliet as a marriage preparation program.

Please note: the price of the Catholic Engaged Encounter Weekend in the Joliet Diocese will be increased to $195 as of the September 2010 weekend. It is still substantially below the average cost of the Engaged Encounter Weekend across the country. As in the past, no couple will ever be turned away from the weekend because of an inability to pay.

Happiness in marriage comes, not so much from the "once in a lifetime" events, wonderful as they are, but by the things we do over and over again. What are these "habits of the heart" that lead to joy and fulfillment? They are firmly grounded in our Catholic faith, but social science research has also suggested their importance for human happiness.

On Tuesday, October 19 at St. Isaac Jogues Parish in Hinsdale, Dr. Jim Healy will present "Making Happiness a Habit", a follow up to last year’s "How to Be Married and Stay Engaged" presentation. The event will run from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. All married or engaged couples are invited, as well as anybody with an interest in learning more about marriage. Joyful Again! a Widowed Ministry program - Sat. & Sun., Nov. 13 & 14, 2010

JOYFUL AGAIN! is a two-day program for widows and widowers who want to resolve the grief they feel inside and begin to live again after the death of their spouse. The weekend employs a series of video presentations, followed by facilitated small group discussion and private reflection time. Through this process, individuals gain new insights and receive encouragement and support. Trained facilitators, who have been widowed themselves, help with the weekend and the discussions.

March for Life: Jan. 22-25, 2011

The Joliet Diocesan Life Office is a pilgrimage to Washington, DC for young people, January 22-25, to March for Life. The March includes two nights at the Holiday Inn. This year the March will be offering a bus package and an air package. The cost of participants ages 15-20: $300 for the bus package and $400 for the air package, including all transportation, lodging and all meals on Sunday and Monday. The cost for those over the age of 20: $350 for the bus package and $450 for the air package. All registration forms and full payment are due by November 12. No financial assistance is given to those taking the air package. Financial assistance is available, but applications are due with registration, no later than October 29. Successful peer support groups have skillful facilitators. Becoming a skillful facilitator is a process that takes time and practice. On October 16, The Center for Family Ministry is sponsoring a facilitator training for church-sponsored divorce, bereavement, and other hurting/healing support groups. Desirée Marciani, associate director of The Center for Family Ministry who works with the hurting/healing ministries, and her husband, Deacon Tom Marciani, who is a hospice chaplain, will lead this training at St. Charles Pastoral Center in Romeoville. Both Desiree and Tom have 15 years of divorce and bereavement ministry experience.

The training is for those who are new facilitators of self-help small group sharing sessions as well as those who wish to brushup on their facilitating skills. Agenda items include the role of the facilitator, communication, listening skills, support group ground rules, dealing with challenging situations and practice. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. Training starts at 9:00 a.m. and concludes at 4:00 p.m. The $20 fee covers continental breakfast, lunch, and a student manual. Registrations are requested by October 11. Without attention and care, marriages wither. Couples slowly drift apart or are torn apart by terrible words and actions. Retrouvaille is helping couples put the pieces back together and rebuild loving relationships. Retrouvaille, pronounced "re tro vi", is a French word meaning "rediscovery."

Retrouvaille begins with a weekend experience, led by trained married couples and a priest. Through presentations, private reflection, and couple communication, couples who are seriously troubled and who may be contemplating divorce are invited to reflect on their marriage and what they need to do to save it.

St. Matthew's Feast Day is Sept. 21st

We imagine Matthew, after the terrible events surrounding the death of Jesus, going to the mountain to which the risen Lord had summoned them. "When they saw him, they worshipped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them [we think of him looking at each one in turn, Matthew listening and excited with the rest], 'All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age'" (Matthew 28:17-20).

Matthew would never forget that day. He proclaimed the Good News by his life and by his word. Our faith rests upon his witness and that of his fellow apostles.

FOCCUS has created a new website which results in a significantly improved print out of the FOCCUS results. FOCCUS, Inc. is asking that all FOCCUS users move in the direction of online administration and scoring. A number of parishes have already made the transition, and those trained as FOCCUS facilitators in the future will be trained in this method. The Center for Family Ministry has materials that can be sent to any parish to help them with this transition, and is also happy to answer any questions.

On Tuesday, October 12, a special meeting will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the St. Charles Pastoral Center in Romeoville for all marriage prep coordinators or parish representatives who would like to review online administration and scoring and related changes. The FOCCUS Pre-Marital Inventory is part of the marriage preparation process for all engaged couples in the Diocese of Joliet. Priests, deacons, and other parish staff members, as well as parishapproved and trained lay couples, may use FOCCUS with engaged couples.

There will be a special one-day training program for FOCCUS at the St. Charles Pastoral Center in Romeoville on Saturday, October 2, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Certain changes have been made in the way FOCCUS is to be scored and administered, and participants will have the opportunity to become familiar with these changes.

Unless they already possess one, individuals or couples will need to purchase the FOCCUS Facilitator Manual for $45.00. There will also be a $10.00 fee for the day, which includes lunch. The ministry of the Word is a fundamental element of evangelization through all its stages because it involves the proclamation of Jesus Christ, the eternal Word of God.

The Word of God nourishes both evangelizers and those who are being evangelized so that each one may continue to grow in his or her Christian life. (National Directory for Catechesis [NDC] [Washington, DC: United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2005], no. 17)

This year, Catechetical Sunday, September 19, 2010, will focus on the theme, "Matrimony: Sacrament of Enduring Love." Those who have been designated by the community to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect upon the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith.

Divorce, death, and other lifealtering crises are devastating experiences and often put family members at risk for a multitude of short and long-term negative effects. However, research findings also indicate that with proper intervention, families adjust to the loss and recover well. The RAINBOWS® program continues to offer healing to families experiencing these losses.

RAINBOWS® is a program which provides support for children and adolescents who are grieving a loss from a life altering crisis such as death or divorce. RAINBOWS® enables those grieving to share their feelings in an accepting, supportive, confidential small group environment facilitated by trained, caring and compassionate adults. Program sites may send their volunteers to the following training sessions at the St. Charles Pastoral Center in Romeoville. Pre-registration is required. Stepparents have the same tough challenges that face any parent in today’s world. They also have to contend with a host of additional challenges associated with healing from loss, unrealistic expectations and adapting to change. How can our parishes reach out to and help the stepparents in their parish community?

Active Parenting for Stepfamilies, published in 2007 by Active Parenting Publishers, is a six-session user-friendly program to help stepparents with the unique task of parenting in a stepfamily. The Center for Family Ministry is looking for stepparent couples interested in leading this Active Parenting for Stepfamilies program at their own parish. The leaders of the program do not have to be experts. The program presents information for each topic or skill to the participants in multiple ways (DVD, power point, brief discussions, etc.) to address different learning styles. Couples interested in the program should contact Desiree Marciani, the associate director of The Center for Family Ministry, at 815-838-5334.

The Joliet Diocesan Natural Family Planning Program teaches the Billings Ovulation Method (BOMA) of NFP. These two-session classes in English and Spanish are offered in the following locations for a fee of $50 per couple. Parishes may also arrange on-site classes.

St. Charles Pastoral Center in Romeoville
Two-session classes in English are held the first and third Tuesday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. Contact Karen Buchert, Diocesan Coordinator of Natural Family Planning, at 630-551-1712 or kasbuchert@comcast.net. The lectures the will take place on the campus of the located in Joliet. The speakers will direct their comments to the undergraduate students of the university. Beginning in September, the well-received diocesan advanced Bible study program, Biblical Institute of the Diocese of Joliet, will be held in two locations. The existing site at St. Mary Immaculate Parish in Plainfield continues on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. A new site opens at St. Petronille Parish in Glen Ellyn on Thursdays from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Both locations are open to new students.

The Biblical Institute is a four-year program which covers all 73 books of the Bible. Classes meet weekly September-May for two hours for a book-by-book study and reflection on the Bible, which includes lectures by veteran Scripture educator, Carol Kloss. The Institute is available to all interested adults. Anyone serving in a parish ministry that involves Scripture will benefit from the Biblical Institute experience. The Eucharistic Congress has been scheduled for Sunday, June 26, 2011 at Lewis University. While the schedule is in the process of being set, the plan is to begin around 12:00 p.m. with talks and presentations for various language groups and ages and conclude with Mass and a Eucharistic Procession later in the afternoon. The presenters for the talks are being finalized. Please be sure not to plan any parish activities for that afternoon so that clergy and parishioners will be free to attend this special celebration.

God Has Blessed Diocese with Five New Priests

On June 6th, Bishop J. Peter Sartain ordained five men at the Cathedral of St. Raymond for the Diocese of Joliet. Please pray for our new priests as they joyfully begin their ministry.

It all starts with a call, a beckoning from God that can be a whisper or can be a loud shout. Five men from the Diocese of Joliet heard that call to serve others, and their answers of "yes" resulted in their being ordained to the priesthood by Bishop J. Peter Sartain during a Mass on June 5 at the Cathedral of St. Raymond in Joliet. Their backgrounds are different, but their goals are the same: to serve the people of God as priests. The Year of the Eucharist motto explanation is available. "... The motto 'Bread of Life, Covenant of Love' reminds us that Christ faithfully and lovingly gives us life and draws us into a mystical union with him and one another through the gift of the Holy Eucharist. The goal of the Year of the Eucharist and Eucharistic Congress in the Diocese of Joliet-in-Illinois is to help all Catholics - clergy, religious and lay faithful - to rediscover the treasure of the Holy Eucharist, the source of our unity and charity. ..."

The motto was suggested by Michael Daley, a 7th grader from St. Jude School in New Lenox, IL. The explanation is by Fr. Matthew Pratscher, Parochial Vicar at Visitation Parish in Elmhurst, Il. The logo for the Year of the Eucharist was designed by Pat Dally, graphics designer of "Christ Is Our Hope" magazine.

... It comes as no surprise to you that these are challenging days for priests, for many reasons. In our diocese we have experienced the pain of priests who have decided to step away from ministry as well as those who were removed from ministry because of the pain they caused. Such situations are difficult for everyone, including priests. I find it all the more important at times such as these to tell you what fine priests we have in our diocese! They work hard, they give of themselves to the Lord wholeheartedly, and they find joy in the priesthood. They deserve our support and prayers because they believe so deeply in their call to the priesthood and live it so lovingly. ...

Thank you, deacons, religious women and men, and lay ministers, for your acceptance of the call to serve and your invaluable contribution to our diocese.

Thank you, people of the diocese, for your love for us and your unfailing love for the Lord.

Year of the Eucharist Plenary Indulgence

A plenary indulgence will be granted to people who visit one of the designated pilgrimage parishes in the diocese during the Year of the Eucharist, which began in April and ends in June 2011.

"By the Grace of God: On the 19th Day of March 2010, the Apostolic Penitentiary, by mandate of the Pope, benevolently grants a Plenary Indulgence, with the customary conditions (Sacramental Confession, Eucharistic Communion and Prayer for the intentions of the Pope) being properly fulfilled, to the truly repentant Christian faithful from the first day of April 2010 to the 25th day of June 2011 ..."

Year of the Eucharist Pilgrimage Churches

Certain parishes have been selected as diocesan pilgrimage churches in honor of the Year of the Eucharist. They are places to go to pray, especially during times of Eucharistic Adoration. That is when the Blessed Sacrament is exposed and people can adore Christ, who is truly present - body, soul and divinity - under the appearance of the consecrated Eucharistic host. The host usually rests in a vessel called a monstrance, which sits on the altar during adoration. Perpetual Adoration takes place 24 hours a day, except when Mass is celebrated in the adoration space. The times listed here also include times the churches or chapels are open to the public.

There are opportunities for pilgrimage at parishes from Ashkum to Westmont.

Certain speakers have agreed to speak at parishes on a topic related to the Eucharist and/or Reconciliation during the Year of the Eucharist, April 1, 2010 to June 26, 2011. The details of the arrangements with the speaker can be worked out when the parish contact takes place and is, of course subject, to the availability of the speaker.

The Year of the Eucharist Spiritual Formation Action Committee is grateful to these speakers for their willingness to offer their time and expertise to help make the Year of the Eucharist as spiritually beneficial as possible for the people of our diocese. Please remember them in your prayers.

Year of the Eucharist Banners

Large Year of the Eucharist banners (approx. 3' x 6') were sent to each parish. The banner displays the Year of the Eucharist logo and the motto - "Bread of Life - Covenant of Love" - in five different languages.

These banners can be displayed in the parishes during the Year of the Eucharist and can also be used when we gather at the Eucharistic Congress on June 26, 2011 at Lewis University.

The Diocese of Joliet will begin our observance of a special Year of the Eucharist on Holy Thursday, April 1, with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. This celebration will conclude on June 26, 2011 - the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of the Lord. The goal of this celebration is, to borrow the words of Pope John Paul II, to rekindle Eucharistic "amazement and gratitude" in all the people of our local Church - clergy, religious and lay faithful.
