VATICAN II ANNIVERSARY MORNING OF REFLECTION: All Liturgists, Liturgy Coordinators, Music Directors, Catechumenate Directors, and liturgical ministers are invited to a morning of reflection on Saturday, September 29 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Pastoral Center to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Opening of the Second Vatican Council. This gathering replaces the annual ministry training sessions. Participants will gather to pray, be inspired by a talk on the value of the Council in the life of the Church (especially on its liturgical life) and to spend some time in conversation with each other. More information will be sent in the coming weeks. Another gathering will be held the following September to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the promulgation of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy. Time will be devoted to prayer, a presentation and time to remember the liturgical development of the Church over these 50 years.

He talks about the pain and anger and confusion involved in the topic. He says people have to be committed to the Charter -- placing the safety of children first; there has to be transparency; we need to be supportive of people who have been harmed; and people need to pray for healing and wisdom and guidance.

PARENTS OF SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN: A support group for married couples who are raising special needs children is held at St. Mary of Gostyn Parish in Downers Grove once a month on Sundays from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The next two meeting is Sunday, June 10. The focus is on emotional understanding, information, and support. Interested couples should send an email inquiry to coupleswithspecialneeds@gmail.com and a group coordinator will contact them.

Starting Friday, June1 from 10-2 p.m., to meet weekly, will be the "Children of Mary's" special needs teen/adult group at Corpus Christi in Carol Stream. This group will incorporate prayer, scripture, and other activities (to be determined at first meeting). First session will involve brainstorming activities for future Fridays, and playing outdoor games such as bocci ball and croquet. Please have your son or daughter bring his/her lunch. We are also looking for volunteers to help on these Fridays; teens and college students are welcome who are planning on majoring in special education. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) this summer is conducting a "Fortnight for Freedom" to begin with the vigil of the feasts of St. Thomas More and St. John Fischer and culminate with Independence Day. The purpose of this effort is to issue a call to defend religious liberty, and to urge the laity to work to protect the First Freedom of the Bill of Rights. The Illinois bishops’ contribution to the "Fortnight for Freedom" is to launch the Illinois Catholic Advocacy Network, or I-CAN.

Bishop Conlon talks about the Ascension of Jesus and links it to the First Letter of St. John, the third chapter, in which St. John writes: "No one who sins has seen Him or known Him." Bishop Conlon refers to a homily by Pope Leo the Great, who said it was easier for the Apostles to deal with the reality of Jesus after the Ascension than before the Ascension. Bishop Conlon makes the point that St. John is saying we have to grow in our relationship with Christ, while also growing into a deeper spiritual relationship with Him. And that St. John had reached a point of spiritual maturity that allowed him to deal with his sin without losing hope; in his small sins he recognized he could contemplate Christ, but not in a way he would be embarrassed because he was in a deeper relationship with Him.

Bishop Conlon Addresses President Obama's Decision on Marriage

President Obama’s decision to endorse a redefinition of marriage is another significant step by government leaders in our country to weaken marriage. Rather than viewing marriage as an essential building block of society, especially for the benefit of children, the president and others seem to think that marriage is a private matter to be defined and arranged any way that suits individuals. In addition, the president justifies his position on marriage with an oversimplified interpretation of one verse of the New Testament, while ignoring the rest of the Bible on the subject of marriage, as well as three millennia of Judeo-Christian tradition.

Preserving the understanding of marriage as the union of a man and a woman is no more today a sign of discrimination than it ever has been. It is simply recognition that men and women are different, and that difference makes a true union of persons, in all its dimensions, possible.

Bishop Conlon Announces Plans for the Blanchette Catholic Center

The Diocese of Joliet is moving forward toward an agreement to sell the St. Charles Borromeo Pastoral Center in Romeoville to Lewis University, while at the same time announcing it has purchased a never-occupied property at 16501 Weber Road in Crest Hill. The diocese will relocate its staff from three separate sites - the St. Charles Borromeo Pastoral Center in Romeoville, as well as the Chancery and the Tribunal in Joliet - into the new location, said Doug Delaney, the executive assistant to Bishop R. Daniel Conlon. The new facility will be known as the Blanchette Catholic Center.

Bishop Conlon Announces Two Curia Appointments

Mrs Molly Fara has been hired as the first Director of the newly established Office of Child and Youth Protection. She will be taking over the safe environment responsibilities from Sister Judith Davies OSF. This is a full time position so that more attention can be given to this area, particularly to help parishes with their responsibility to protect children.

Ms. Fara is a licensed clinical social worker who is skilled at counseling individuals, groups and families. She is an active member of St. Margaret Mary Parish Naperville and a founding member of All Saints Regional Catholic Academy. Please welcome Mrs Molly Fara to the Diocesan Curia. She begins her term of service on May 10, 2012.

On July 1 2012 Sister Judith Davies OSF will replace Sr Theresa Galvin CND as the Delegate for Religious. Sister Theresa has served as the Delegate for Religious for 15 years and has chosen to retire. We are all grateful for her years of service to the men and women religious of the diocese on behalf of the Bishop of Joliet. Sister Judith will continue her responsibilities as Chancellor.

Joliet, IL - Parishes across the Diocese of Joliet are urged to mark the World Day of Prayer for Vocations on April 29th, the Fourth Sunday of Easter.
The theme of Benedict XVI's reflections this year is: "Vocations, the Gift of the Love of God". In his message for the 49th World Day of Prayer for Vocations, our Holy Father says:

"The source of every perfect gift is God who is Love - Deus caritas est: 'Whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him'". The love of God is everlasting; He is faithful to Himself. ... Yet the appealing beauty of this divine love, which precedes and accompanies us, needs to be proclaimed ever anew, especially to younger generations. It is to the perfection of the Father’s love that Jesus Christ calls us every day! The high standard of the Christian life consists in loving 'as' God loves; with a love that is shown in the total, faithful and fruitful gift of self."

Fr. Burke Masters, vocation director of the Diocese of Joliet, suggests that "Every vocational call comes from God’s love for us. When we encounter God’s love in a powerful way it requires a response from us. How am I going to spend my life serving and loving God and my neighbor? What are the gifts and talents that God has given me?"

Please join the whole Church today and every day in praying for holy vocations. We are all called to be holy. We are all called to love God and our neighbor. What is my particular response?

Vocation Office Supported by Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal

Included in a thank you message, Fr. Burke Masters, Diocesan Director of Vocations said, "I would like to personally thank you, on behalf of all of our seminarians, for your generous donations for the Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal. A part of every donation for the appeal goes toward educating our future priests for the Diocese of Joliet.

When a young man, who has not completed college, is accepted as a seminarian for the diocese, we pay for his first year of room, board and tuition in the seminary. This is meant to encourage him to give the seminary a try because we feel true discernment happens in the seminary. Usually a young man can discern whether or not he is being called to be a priest during the first two years of seminary. After the first year of college seminary, the diocese pays for half of their remaining costs through the rest of their college seminary years. Once a man finishes college seminary, he continues on to major seminary, where he studies theology for four years. The diocese pays for all of their room, board and tuition during major seminary because their formation is now a full-time commitment.

Just imagine how one priest who is helped by your donation may affect the souls of thousands of people throughout his priestly life. I was a beneficiary of your generosity during my days as a seminarian, and I am eternally grateful for you. God bless you."

Bishop Conlon Talks about Learning to See and Believe in Jesus

Bishop Conlon talks about several Gospel readings, one involving Saint Stephen, before his martyrdom to the Church, who is being accused of insulting God because of him saying Jesus was raised from the dead and was God. The second reading the Bishop refers to Jesus feeding the people by multiplying of the loaves and fishes, and in it, the people are not interested in believing in God, only in wanting more food, more bread. Bishop Conlon brings up the point of the need to believe in Him and truly see Jesus as the Divine Savior and look at the fundamental beliefs of our faith.

Bishop Conlon Talking about Jesus' Resurrection

Bishop Conlon talks the fact that, without Jesus rising from the dead, we would be children of death, It is Jesus rising from the dead that the real defeat of death and sin occurs. He talks about the differences in how people from the East and West have a different understanding of the Paschal Mystery. The people in the East are more conscious of Christ being raised from the dead and sitting gloriously at the right hand of the Father. We, in the West, focus a lot on the sense of hope and joy of Jesus's death and resurrection and a community of people coming together to celebrate His resurrection. Bishop Conlon likes this kind of spirituality, which is about reliance on the glory and power of God and joy and hope within a community of other worshipers.

BISHOPS ISSUE CALL TO ACTION TO DEFEND RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

Urge strong lay involvement
Outline threats to First Freedom at all levels of government and abroad
Call upon dioceses to pursue religious liberty fortnight, June 21-July 4

WASHINGTON - The U.S. bishops have issued a call to action to defend religious liberty and urged laity to work to protect the First Freedom of the Bill of Rights. They outlined their position in "Our First, Most Cherished Freedom." The document was developed by the Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), approved for publication by the USCCB Administrative Committee March 13, and published in English and Spanish April 12.

"We have been staunch defenders of religious liberty in the past. We have a solemn duty to discharge that duty today," the bishops said in the document, "...for religious liberty is under attack, both at home and abroad."
