VIENNA, 22 September – Montenegro marked Armed Forces Day in Vienna with an official ceremony and reception attended by senior representatives of Austria and Montenegro, as well as numerous members of the diplomatic and military corps.

The event was hosted by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Montenegro to the Republic of Austria, H.E. Stanica Anđić, and Colonel Velimir Obradović, Defence Attaché of Montenegro to the Republic of Austria and Senior Military Adviser to the OSCE, the United Nations and other international organisations in Vienna.

Held on 22 September at the Officers’ Casino of the Maria Theresia Barracks in Vienna, the celebration brought together representatives of the diplomatic community and defence institutions, as well as military attachés accredited to Austria.

Among the distinguished guests were Dr. Arnold H. Kammel, MA, Secretary General of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Defence, and Marko Marković, State Secretary at the Ministry of Defence of Montenegro.

Their presence underscored the importance of bilateral relations between Austria and Montenegro, as well as the ongoing dialogue between the two countries in the fields of defence and security cooperation.

The official programme opened with welcoming remarks by Ambassador Stanica Anđić, followed by an address by State Secretary Marko Marković. The closing remarks were delivered by Colonel Velimir Obradović, who addressed the assembled representatives of the diplomatic and military community.

Following the official programme, guests were invited to a reception at the Officers’ Casino, providing an opportunity for informal conversations, professional exchange and further networking among members of Vienna’s diplomatic and military community.

WIEN, 22. September – Montenegro beging den Tag seiner Streitkräfte in Wien mit einer feierlichen Veranstaltung und einem Empfang, an dem hochrangige Vertreter Österreichs und Montenegros sowie zahlreiche Mitglieder des diplomatischen und militärischen Korps teilnahmen.

Gastgeber der Veranstaltung waren die außerordentliche und bevollmächtigte Botschafterin Montenegros in der Republik Österreich, I.E. Stanica Anđić, und Oberst Velimir Obradović, Verteidigungsattaché Montenegros in der Republik Österreich und leitender Militärberater bei der OSZE, den Vereinten Nationen und weiteren internationalen Organisationen in Wien.

Die Feier fand am 22. September im Offizierskasino der Maria-Theresien-Kaserne in Wien statt und brachte Vertreter der diplomatischen Gemeinschaft, der Verteidigungsinstitutionen sowie in Österreich akkreditierte Militärattachés zusammen.

Hochrangige Vertreter Österreichs und Montenegros

Zu den Ehrengästen zählten Dr. Arnold H. Kammel, MA, Generalsekretär im österreichischen Bundesministerium für Landesverteidigung, sowie Marko Marković, Staatssekretär im Verteidigungsministerium Montenegros.

Ihre Teilnahme unterstrich die Bedeutung der bilateralen Beziehungen zwischen Österreich und Montenegro sowie den kontinuierlichen Dialog zwischen beiden Ländern im Bereich der Verteidigungs- und Sicherheitszusammenarbeit.

Das offizielle Programm wurde mit Grußworten von Botschafterin Stanica Anđić eröffnet. Anschließend richtete Staatssekretär Marko Marković das Wort an die anwesenden Gäste. Die Schlussworte sprach Oberst Velimir Obradović, der sich an die versammelten Vertreter der diplomatischen und militärischen Gemeinschaft wandte.

Im Anschluss an den offiziellen Teil waren die Gäste zu einem Empfang im Offizierskasino eingeladen. Dieser bot Gelegenheit zu persönlichen Gesprächen, zum fachlichen Austausch und zur weiteren Vernetzung innerhalb des diplomatischen und militärischen Korps in Wien.

Marking World Tourism Day, the Weltmuseum Wien became a vibrant showcase of Slovenian hospitality, gastronomy and culture. Bringing together distinguished guests from Austria and Slovenia, the Slovenia Evening offered an authentic taste of the country and highlighted the close ties between the two neighbouring nations.

Slovenia in the Heart of Vienna

On Monday, 21 September, the Slovenian Tourist Board in Vienna hosted a special Slovenia Evening in the historic setting of the Weltmuseum Wien. Fine cuisine, wine, music and personal encounters came together in an atmospheric presentation of a country increasingly recognised as one of Europe’s distinctive destinations for sustainable tourism and outstanding gastronomy.

Among the many distinguished guests from both countries was H.E. Marko Štucin, Ambassador of the Republic of Slovenia to Austria. His presence also added a diplomatic dimension to the evening and underscored the close ties between the two neighbouring countries.

The event was opened by Žana Marijan, Director of the Slovenian Tourist Board in Vienna, who welcomed the guests and invited them to discover Slovenia through its tourism, culinary traditions and cultural identity.

“From Bohinj” – Alpine Heritage Meets Contemporary Cuisine

Under the motto “From Bohinj”, the evening placed the spotlight on one of Slovenia’s most remarkable regions. Nestled in the Julian Alps, Bohinj is synonymous with pristine nature, Alpine traditions and an approach to tourism that places local identity and sustainability at its heart.

Klemen Langus, Director of Tourism Bohinj, took the audience on a journey through the region’s spectacular landscapes and distinctive character, offering an insight into what makes Bohinj such a compelling destination.

The culinary journey also led directly to the Julian Alps. Davor Arnautović of Gourmet Vila Muhr in Bohinj, awarded four Gault&Millau toques, presented his contemporary interpretation of regional cuisine. Named “Chef of the Future 2026,” Arnautović demonstrated how Alpine traditions and local ingredients can be transformed through the language of contemporary haute cuisine.

His creations were accompanied by selected wines from Goriška Brda, one of Slovenia’s most renowned wine regions, offering guests a sophisticated glimpse into the diversity of the country’s culinary landscape.

Culture as a Bridge

The evening’s musical programme was provided by Severa and Gal Gjurin, whose distinctive interpretation of Slovenian folk and ethno music blended traditional sounds with contemporary expression, adding another layer to the cultural experience.

The Slovenia Evening was therefore much more than a tourism presentation. Gastronomy, wine, music and personal encounters came together to create an authentic portrait of the country while highlighting the cultural and human connections that unite Austria and Slovenia.

In the unique atmosphere of the Weltmuseum Wien, the evening ultimately showcased one of Slovenia’s finest calling cards: hospitality that is not simply presented, but genuinely lived.

Slowenien zu Gast in Wien: Genuss, Kultur und gelebte Gastfreundschaft

Im Zeichen des Welttourismustages wurde das Weltmuseum Wien zum Treffpunkt slowenischer Gastfreundschaft, Kulinarik und Kultur. Der Slowenien-Abend vereinte hochrangige Gäste aus Österreich und Slowenien und präsentierte das Land von seiner genussvollen und authentischen Seite.

Slowenien im Herzen Wiens

Am Montag, dem 21. September, lud das Slowenische Tourismusbüro in Wien zu einem besonderen Slowenien-Abend in die historische Kulisse des Weltmuseums Wien. Kulinarik, Wein, Musik und persönliche Begegnungen verbanden sich zu einer stimmungsvollen Präsentation eines Landes, das sich zunehmend als nachhaltige und hochwertige europäische Tourismus- und Gastronomiedestination positioniert.

Unter den zahlreichen namhaften Gästen aus beiden Ländern war auch S.E. Marko Štucin, Botschafter der Republik Slowenien in Österreich. Seiner Anwesenheit verlieh dem Abend zugleich eine diplomatische Note und unterstrich die engen Beziehungen zwischen den beiden Nachbarländern.

Eröffnet wurde die Veranstaltung von Žana Marijan, Direktorin des Slowenischen Tourismusbüros in Wien, die die Gäste zu einer Reise durch die touristischen, kulinarischen und kulturellen Facetten Sloweniens willkommen hieß.

„From Bohinj“ – alpine Identität und moderner Genuss

Im Mittelpunkt des Abends stand unter dem Motto „From Bohinj“ eine der eindrucksvollsten Regionen Sloweniens. Eingebettet in die Julischen Alpen, steht Bohinj für unberührte Natur, alpine Tradition und einen Tourismus, der Regionalität und Nachhaltigkeit miteinander verbindet.

Klemen Langus, Direktor von Tourismus Bohinj, nahm die Gäste mit auf eine Reise durch die Landschaft und Besonderheiten der Region und vermittelte einen Eindruck davon, was Bohinj als Reiseziel auszeichnet.

Auch kulinarisch führte die Reise direkt in die Julischen Alpen. Davor Arnautović von der mit vier Gault&Millau-Hauben ausgezeichneten Gourmet Vila Muhr in Bohinj interpretierte regionale Spezialitäten auf moderne Weise. Der als „Chef der Zukunft 2026“ ausgezeichnete Küchenchef zeigte dabei, wie sich alpine Tradition, lokale Produkte und zeitgenössische Haute Cuisine miteinander verbinden lassen.

Begleitet wurden seine Kreationen von ausgewählten Weinen aus Goriška Brda, einer der renommiertesten Weinregionen Sloweniens – eine Kombination, die die Vielfalt der slowenischen Genusslandschaft eindrucksvoll widerspiegelte.

Kultur, die verbindet

Für die musikalische Atmosphäre sorgten Severa und Gal Gjurin mit ihrer Interpretation slowenischer Volks- und Ethnomusik. Traditionelle Klänge und zeitgenössische Elemente verliehen dem Abend eine zusätzliche kulturelle Dimension.

So wurde der Slowenien-Abend zu weit mehr als einer touristischen Präsentation. Gastronomie, Wein, Musik und persönliche Begegnungen zeichneten gemeinsam ein authentisches Bild des Landes und machten zugleich sichtbar, was Österreich und Slowenien verbindet.

In der besonderen Atmosphäre des Weltmuseums zeigte sich schließlich eine der stärksten Visitenkarten Sloweniens: Gastfreundschaft, die nicht nur präsentiert, sondern gelebt wird.

Six new diplomatic representatives presented their credentials to Austrian Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen

Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen welcomed six new ambassadors to the Presidential Chancellery on Friday, 18 September 2026, where they formally presented their letters of credence.

The ceremony marked the official beginning of their diplomatic missions in Austria, with the newly accredited ambassadors assuming their roles as the highest-ranking representatives of their respective countries.

A warm welcome to the new ambassadors representing the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Malaysia, the Republic of Chile, the Republic of Iceland and the Kingdom of Belgium.

With the formal presentation of their credentials to the Federal President, they are now officially accredited as their countries’ diplomatic representatives to the Republic of Austria.

Six days of fashion, international creativity and unmistakable Viennese flair came to a glamorous close on Saturday evening as VIENNA FASHION WEEK.26 celebrated its grand finale at Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier.

At the heart of the closing night was a runway show by internationally renowned Turkish-Austrian designer Atıl Kutoğlu, whose presentation provided one of the evening’s defining moments. Adding an extra touch of prominence to the occasion was a distinguished mix of guests from the worlds of politics, diplomacy and Viennese society, including Austria’s Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger and H.E. Gürsel Dönmez, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Austria, who attended together with his wife, Asiye Dönmez.

From 14 to 19 September 2026, the MuseumsQuartier’s Halls E+G once again became a vibrant meeting point for the international fashion scene. Runway shows, designer presentations, shopping areas, pop-up stores and an extensive programme of accompanying events turned Vienna into a six-day destination for designers, industry insiders and fashion enthusiasts.

Six Days of Fashion in the Heart of Vienna

The 2026 edition of VIENNA FASHION WEEK.26 officially opened on Monday, 14 September, with its Opening Show. Since its debut in 2009, Vienna Fashion Week has established itself as a fixture on Austria’s fashion calendar and a platform bringing together established designers, emerging talent and international creative voices.

This year once again showcased the eclectic mix that has become one of the event’s defining characteristics: established Austrian labels appeared alongside up-and-coming designers, fashion schools and international creatives.

Halls E+G offered much more than runway shows. An extensive shopping area featuring designer pieces and street style, along with a new Vintage Corner, complemented the programme and gave visitors the opportunity to experience fashion beyond the catwalk.

It was precisely this interplay of generations, aesthetics and creative approaches that gave this year’s Fashion Week its distinctive character. Experimental designs shared the spotlight with wearable fashion, while emerging talents appeared alongside established names – all united by a common ambition to strengthen Vienna’s visibility as a creative fashion destination.

The Grand Finale: Atıl Kutoğlu Takes Centre Stage

All eyes turned to Saturday, 19 September, as VIENNA FASHION WEEK.26 prepared for its grand finale. After six intensive days of shows and events, the closing night delivered the final highlight of this year’s programme.

The evening began with collections from Shopiaron, Kathrin Schlager and Planter, before the spotlight shifted to the night’s highly anticipated finale: Atıl Kutoğlu.

The internationally successful Turkish-Austrian designer has spent decades developing a distinctive visual language that combines cultural influences with glamour, striking silhouettes and a cosmopolitan sensibility.

His career is also closely intertwined with Vienna. Kutoğlu originally came to the Austrian capital to study, later trained in fashion design and opened his first atelier in the city. In 2013, he was awarded the Gold Decoration of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria. Since June 2026, he has once again strengthened his presence in the Austrian capital with an expanded flagship store in central Vienna.

For the Fashion Week finale, Kutoğlu brought expressive silhouettes, rich colours and shimmering fabrics to the runway, once again reflecting the cultural influences that have long been a hallmark of his work.

The presentation was more than simply the final show on a packed Fashion Week schedule. It provided a visually striking conclusion to six days devoted to fashion, creativity and international exchange.

Politics and Diplomacy in the Front Row

The runway was not the only place attracting attention. The front row brought together a high-profile group of guests from politics, diplomacy and society.

Among them was Austria’s Federal Minister for European and International Affairs, Beate Meinl-Reisinger. Also in attendance was H.E. Gürsel Dönmez, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Austria, accompanied by his wife, Asiye Dönmez.

Their presence added a diplomatic and social dimension to the closing night. From their front-row seats, the guests watched Atıl Kutoğlu unveil his latest creations, as fashion, politics, diplomacy and Viennese society came together around the runway.

In Kutoğlu’s case, that connection felt particularly fitting. For decades, both his biography and his creative work have formed a bridge between Vienna and Türkiye, bringing together different cultural traditions within an unmistakably international vision of fashion.

Against the backdrop of Vienna Fashion Week, this dialogue between cultures extended beyond the clothes themselves, giving the finale a significance that reached beyond the runway.

Vienna Bids Farewell to Six Days of Fashion

With the final walk down the catwalk, six days of fashion at the MuseumsQuartier came to an end. Throughout the week, the venue had been transformed into an international stage for fashion, trends and lifestyle – a place where designers met their audiences, established names shared the spotlight with emerging talent, and Austria’s fashion scene welcomed guests from around the world.

The finale with Atıl Kutoğlu brought many of those elements together one last time: statement eveningwear, prominent front-row guests, international flair and an unmistakably Viennese setting.

And so VIENNA FASHION WEEK.26 drew to a close on Saturday evening exactly where a fashion week should – on the runway, amid applause, camera flashes and one final fashion statement.

Bereits am Montag, dem 14. September, fiel mit der Opening Show der Startschuss für die diesjährige Ausgabe der VIENNA FASHION WEEK.26. Seit ihrer Premiere im Jahr 2009 hat sich die Wiener Modewoche als feste Größe im heimischen Modekalender etabliert.

Auch 2026 setzte die Veranstaltung auf jene Mischung, die ihr über die Jahre ein unverwechselbares Profil gegeben hat: etablierte österreichische Labels trafen auf Nachwuchstalente, Modeschulen und internationale Kreative. Die Hallen E+G boten dabei nicht nur Raum für die Runway Shows. Ein umfangreicher Shopping-Bereich mit Designerstücken und Streetstyle sowie ein neuer Vintage Corner ergänzten das Programm.

Das große Finale: Atıl Kutoğlu im Mittelpunkt

Besondere Aufmerksamkeit galt dem Samstag, 19. September, an dem die VIENNA FASHION WEEK.26 ihr großes Finale feierte. Nach sechs intensiven Tagen bildete der Abschlussabend den letzten Höhepunkt des diesjährigen Programms.

Im Rahmen des Closings präsentierten zunächst die Designerinnen und Designer der Labels Shopiaron, Kathrin Schlager und Planter ihre Kreationen. Den Höhepunkt des Abends bildete schließlich die Präsentation von Atıl Kutoğlu.

Der international erfolgreiche Designer verbindet in seiner Arbeit seit Jahrzehnten unterschiedliche kulturelle Einflüsse mit einer unverkennbaren, glamourösen Formensprache. Gleichzeitig ist seine Karriere eng mit Wien verbunden: Kutoğlu kam einst zum Studium in die österreichische Hauptstadt, absolvierte hier später eine Ausbildung in Modedesign und eröffnete sein erstes Atelier. 2013 wurde er mit dem Goldenen Ehrenzeichen für Verdienste um die Republik Österreich ausgezeichnet. Seit Juni 2026 ist er zudem wieder mit einem erweiterten Flagship-Store in der Wiener Innenstadt vertreten.

Auf dem Laufsteg setzte Kutoğlu beim Finale auf ausdrucksstarke Silhouetten, intensive Farben, schimmernde Materialien und jene Verbindung verschiedener kultureller Einflüsse, die seit Langem zu den charakteristischen Elementen seiner Mode zählt. Die Closing Show wurde so nicht nur zum Abschluss eines dicht gefüllten Fashion-Week-Programms, sondern auch zu einem starken visuellen Schlusspunkt der diesjährigen Ausgabe.

Politik und Diplomatie in der Front Row

Für besondere Aufmerksamkeit sorgte auch die hochkarätig besetzte erste Reihe. Unter den Gästen befand sich die österreichische Bundesministerin für europäische und internationale Angelegenheiten Beate Meinl-Reisinger. Ebenfalls anwesend war S.E. Gürsel Dönmez, Botschafter der Republik Türkiye in Österreich, gemeinsam mit seiner Ehefrau Asiye Dönmez.

Damit erhielt der Abschlussabend neben seiner modischen auch eine gesellschaftliche und diplomatische Note. Die Gäste verfolgten die Präsentation der neuesten Kreationen von Atıl Kutoğlu aus unmittelbarer Nähe zum Laufsteg – dort, wo sich an diesem Abend Modewelt, Politik, Diplomatie und Wiener Gesellschaft begegneten.

Gerade bei Kutoğlu erscheint diese Verbindung besonders passend. Seine Biografie und sein kreatives Schaffen schlagen seit Jahrzehnten eine Brücke zwischen Wien und Türkiye, zwischen unterschiedlichen kulturellen Traditionen und einer international ausgerichteten Modewelt.

Wien verabschiedet sechs Tage Fashion

Mit dem letzten Auftritt auf dem Catwalk ging schließlich eine Modewoche zu Ende, die das MuseumsQuartier sechs Tage lang in eine internationale Bühne für Fashion, Trends und Lifestyle verwandelt hatte. Rund um den Laufsteg trafen Designer auf Publikum, etablierte Namen auf neue Talente und österreichische Modeszene auf internationale Gäste.

Das Finale mit Atıl Kutoğlu brachte vieles davon noch einmal zusammen: große Abendmode, prominente Front-Row-Gäste, internationales Flair und eine unverkennbar Wiener Kulisse.

So endete die VIENNA FASHION WEEK.26 am Samstagabend dort, wo eine Modewoche idealerweise endet: auf dem Laufsteg – mit Applaus, Blitzlicht und einem letzten großen modischen Statement.

In a compelling artistic dialogue, this major exhibition brings together two of the most important figurative painters of the 20th century: Pablo Picasso and Francis Bacon.

It was Picasso’s work that inspired Bacon to become a painter. Throughout his life, Bacon wrestled with the legacy of this towering artistic figure, ultimately striving not merely to follow in his footsteps, but to surpass him. For the second half of the 20th century, Bacon sought to become what Picasso had been for the first: a chronicler of the human condition in all its complexity, fragmentation and intensity. For both artists, human existence stood at the very heart of their work.

Both were profoundly fascinated by the human body — fragmented, reconstructed and radically reinvented. Through their distorted representations of the figure, they explored pain, desire and vulnerability, holding an uncompromising mirror up to the modern human psyche. Recurring themes such as crucifixions, screams, bullfighting, nudes and the “Tears of Eros” reveal, in both artists’ work, the drama and intensity of human life.

Although Picasso himself was not influenced by Bacon, he followed the younger artist’s career with keen interest. Bringing together around 70 key works from international museums and private collections, from Chicago and Mexico City to London, Paris and Stockholm, the exhibition stages a powerful encounter between these two masters.

The result is a fascinating exploration of the parallels within their respective bodies of work — and of Picasso’s profound influence on the generation of artists that followed him.

Introduction

In 1927, Francis Bacon travelled to Paris. For Pablo Picasso, it was an exceptionally creative year: inspired by Surrealism, he had begun working on erotic, biomorphically distorted nudes. An exhibition of Picasso’s work in the French capital made a profound impression on the seventeen-year-old Bacon, revealing to him, as he would later describe it, “what it feels like to be human.” It was this encounter that inspired him to become an artist.

Bacon’s first confrontation with the work of the 20th century’s most innovative figurative artist would shape him for the rest of his life. In the second half of the century, Bacon would become what Picasso had been in the first: a mirror of the modern psyche and a chronicler of the human catastrophe of two world wars. In 1962, Picasso — whose own work remained uninfluenced by Bacon — sent word to the younger artist that he had liked his work, “some of it very much.”

The exhibition brings together two essentially solitary giants of figurative art. Picasso, a virtuoso draughtsman, was deeply rooted in modernism and in the rejection of academic conventions. Bacon, largely self-taught, meticulously prepared paintings that, in their scale, dark atmosphere and handling of paint, often recall the Old Masters — while simultaneously allowing chance to play a decisive role. In their aggression, physicality and vitality, both artists created work capable of confronting the force of Abstract Expressionism on its own terms.

Yet above all, the exhibition focuses on the motifs and attitudes the two artists shared, many of them rooted in Picasso’s contribution to Surrealism. Both explored humanity’s most primal instincts, including the instinct to create art itself. Both appealed directly to intellect and emotion. Keys turning in locks, gaping mouths and wrestling bodies became coded expressions of sexuality. Anti-bourgeois and anti-clerical in spirit, they overturned religious ritual and conventional sexual morality while confronting sadism and violence.

Their work repeatedly engaged with politics, autobiography and the great existential questions surrounding sexuality, death and the apparent meaninglessness of existence. Above all, despite living through an age scarred by two world wars, both continued to affirm the undiminished significance of the human being.

They rescued the human body from abstraction while simultaneously subjecting it to radical deformation. They pushed it towards the animalistic, depicting it in states of convulsion and heightened sensation, often hovering close to mortal pain.

For Picasso and Bacon, the human figure is never fixed or stable. It is a site of rupture, reinvention and exposure. To ask what it feels like to be human is therefore not to search for some immutable human essence, but to confront our instability: the body as mask and wound, as a stage for desire and violence — uncertain, fragile and perpetually changing.

The exhibition explores the defining themes that connect the two artists: the direct influence of Picasso’s Surrealism on the young Bacon, their reinterpretations of the Old Masters, portraiture and the nude, the animal within the human, the intoxication of erotic desire, and death.

The Sorcerer and the Apprentice

Inspired by Surrealism, Picasso turned his attention once again to the human figure. In a liberated, libidinous visual language, he looked beyond the beauty of outward form. Desire and fear bend and distort the body, suggesting latent sexual meanings.

Picasso admired prehistoric figurines, whose creators were regarded by modern art and psychoanalysis as possessing an emotional freedom unrestrained by civilisation. Inspired by seaside holidays with his wife Olga and his secret lover Marie-Thérèse, he painted soft, rounded bathers charged with erotic pleasure and emotional tension.

For the Surrealists — from Dalí to Miró — the seashore became a genius loci, a landscape of obsession and a metaphor for the earth in its primordial state. Picasso would later harness Surrealist-Cubist distortions of the body in his anti-war masterpiece Guernica, using deformation to denounce human cruelty and sadism.

In the years immediately following the Second World War, Bacon’s work revealed the direct impact of Picasso’s Surrealist figuration. Bacon gave visual form to emotion in all its ambiguity and erotic obsession. Through physically overwhelming oil paintings whose meanings are often grasped intuitively rather than rationally, he made visible the defining emotions of his childhood: fear, injury, resistance, despair, helplessness and loneliness.

His paintings also expressed a profound rejection of authority, from the figure of his father to that of the fascist dictator. His snarling creatures, gathering their final strength to release existential, almost primordial screams, reflect a post-war world marked by suffering and isolation.

Significantly, in 1953, Time magazine titled an article about an exhibition of this group of Bacon’s works “Snapshots from Hell.”

Reinventing Tradition

In his late work, Picasso took stock of his life as an artist. His reinterpretations of the Old Masters — together with Bacon’s papal portraits after Velázquez — rank among the most celebrated acts of artistic reimagining in modern art history.

At a time when abstraction was reaching its height in the 1950s, these works amounted to a powerful declaration of faith in the future of figurative art.

Bacon combined references to the Old Masters with images drawn from modern popular culture: the screaming nurse from Sergei Eisenstein’s Battleship Potemkin, for example, or photographs of fascist dictators. While Picasso’s portraits of around 1930 display an immediate, almost archaic obscenity, in Bacon the mouth becomes pure spasm — and the painted image itself seems to scream.

Bacon questioned both the divinely sanctioned authority of the Pope and the authority embodied by the father. Images of wrestlers offered him a means of disguising the explicit subject of the homosexual couple. The unexpected collision of disparate visual quotations became an instrument of subversion, disguise and travesty.

Picasso, meanwhile, turned to one of the undisputed fathers of modern art: Édouard Manet. In 1863, Manet’s Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe (Luncheon on the Grass) scandalously placed a naked woman, stripped of any mythological justification, alongside two fully clothed men.

In his own variations on Manet’s pastoral scene, Picasso broke decisively with the original. He analysed, deconstructed, reconstructed, distorted and destroyed. This subversive iconoclasm would subsequently be taken even further by Pop Art through its appropriation of Picasso’s own work.

Beyond Resemblance

The rise of Fascism in Europe marked a decisive turning point in Picasso’s work in 1937. The Nazis launched a campaign against classical modernism, with Cubism among their principal targets. Picasso responded by intensifying its language into what might be described as a form of “Surrealist Cubism.”

The human figure, already stretched and fractured in his Cubist works, now became profoundly destabilised. In the darkness of his studio — transformed into a kind of laboratory of horror — Picasso presented portraits of Dora Maar and Marie-Thérèse Walter in dense ensembles: facial features displaced, proportions disrupted, mouths rendered almost like those of skulls.

Deformation became a form of aesthetic resistance.

Bacon turned to portraiture relatively late, concentrating primarily on his closest friends. He mercilessly twisted their eyes and mouths in an attempt to reveal the many facets and inner contradictions of their personalities.

His vision of humanity was forged in the shadowy clubs of Soho, where bohemian life, crime, homosexuality, alcoholism and gambling existed side by side. In his triptychs, the same face is repeated almost obsessively, calling into question the very stability of identity.

In his self-portraits, Bacon presented himself as a “beaten” figure: bruised, wounded and exposed almost to the point of exhibitionism, sometimes made-up, one half of the face darkened, with death always present in the background.

Bacon wounds, skins, dissects and destroys the human figure almost to the point of dismemberment. In doing so, he violently drags reality out from beneath the surface — revealing the unstable, vulnerable and visceral condition of being human.

ALBERTINA AUSSTELLUNG: Picasso – Bacon:  What It Feels Like to Be Human

In einer spannungsvollen Gegenüberstellung zeigt die großangelegte Ausstellung die beiden bedeutendsten figurativen Maler des 20. Jahrhunderts, Pablo Picasso und Francis Bacon.

Unter dem Eindruck Picassos fasste Bacon den Entschluss, Maler zu werden. Sein Leben lang sollte er mit diesem großen Vorbild ringen – und letztlich danach streben, sie zu übertreffen. Für die zweite Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts wollte Bacon das sein, was Picasso für die erste war: Chronist des Menschseins in all seiner Zerrissenheit. Beide Jahrhundertkünstler rückten die menschliche Existenz ins Zentrum ihrer Bildwelt.

Beide beschäftigte der menschliche Körper – zerrissen, neu zusammengesetzt und mit radikaler Kraft neu erfunden. In ihren verzerrten Darstellungen zeigen sie Schmerz, Begierde und Verletzlichkeit und halten der modernen Seele einen schonungslosen Spiegel vor. Themen wie Kreuzigungen, Schreie, Stierkampf, Akte und die „Tränen des Eros“ offenbaren für beide das Drama des Lebens.

Obwohl Picasso selbst nicht von Bacon beeinflusst war, verfolgte auch er dessen Karriere aufmerksam. Rund 70 Schlüsselwerke aus internationalen Museen und Privatsammlungen von Chicago über Mexico-City bis London, Paris und Stockholm illustrieren in einer eindrucksvollen Konfrontation die Gemeinsamkeiten im Œuvre der beiden Meister und die Bedeutung Picassos für die nachfolgende Künstlergeneration.

Einleitung

Im Jahr 1927 reist Bacon nach Paris. Für Picasso ist es ein äußerst kreatives Jahr, in dem er, inspiriert vom Surrealismus, an erotischen, biomorph verformten Akten zu arbeiten beginnt. Unter dem Eindruck einer Ausstellung von Picassos Werken in der Seinemetropole, die dem 17-jährigen Bacon vermitteln, „wie es sich anfühlt, ein Mensch zu sein“, möchte auch er Künstler werden. Diese erste Begegnung mit dem innovativsten figurativen Künstler des 20. Jahrhunderts prägt Bacon für den Rest seines Lebens. Er wird für die zweite Jahrhunderthälfte das, was Picasso für die erste war: ein Spiegel der modernen Seele und der menschlichen Katastrophe zweier Weltkriege. 1962 lässt Picasso, selbst unbeeinflusst von Bacon, ihn wissen, sein Werk habe ihm „gefallen – einiges davon sehr“.

Die Ausstellung vereint zwei eigentlich solitäre Giganten der figurativen Kunst: Picasso, virtuoser Zeichner, ist ganz in der Moderne und Überwindung akademischer Normen verhaftet. Bacon, Autodidakt, bereitet seine in Format, dunkler Lichtstimmung und Duktus geradezu altmeisterlichen, aber auch den Zufall mit einbeziehenden Gemälde akribisch vor. In ihrer Aggressivität, Materialität und Vitalität messen sie sich mit dem Abstrakten Expressionismus.

Mit der ganzen Wucht ihrer Werke lenkt diese Zusammenschau jedoch den Fokus auf Bacons und Picassos gemeinsame Motivik und Geisteshaltung, die in Picassos Beitrag zum Surrealismus wurzeln. Beide stellen die Urinstinkte des Menschen dar, die Kunst mit eingeschlossen. Beide zielen direkt auf Intellekt und Emotionen. Sich in Schlössern drehende Schlüssel, aufgerissene Münder und Ringkämpfe verschlüsseln sexuelle Inhalte. Antibürgerlich und antiklerikal, verkehren sie kirchliche Rituale, überkommene Sexualmoral, Sadismus und Gewalt. Stets beziehen sie politisch Stellung, notieren Autobiografisches und thematisieren die großen existenziellen Fragen des Menschen zu Sexualität, Tod und der Sinnlosigkeit des Daseins. Vor allem aber glauben beide trotz zweier Weltkriege weiter an die ungeschmälerte Bedeutung des Menschen.

Sie retten den menschlichen Körper vor der Abstraktion und setzen ihn gleichzeitig der radikalen Deformierung aus, bringen ihn an den Rand des Animalischen, zeigen ihn in Momenten der Konvulsion und gesteigerten Empfindung, stets in der Nähe tödlichen Schmerzes. Die menschliche Figur ist keine feste Größe. Sie ist ein Ort des Bruchs, der Neuerfindung, der Entblößung. Zu fragen, wie es sich anfühlt, Mensch zu sein, bedeutet nicht, nach seinem eigentlichen Wesen zu suchen, sondern sich seiner Instabilität zu stellen – dem Körper als Maske, Wunde, Schauplatz von Begierde und Gewalt, unsicher, zerbrechlich, sich ständig wandelnd.

Die Ausstellung präsentiert die großen Themen der beiden Künstler: den direkten Einfluss von Picassos Surrealismus auf den jungen Bacon, die Paraphrasen der alten Meister, das Porträt und den Akt, das Animalische im Menschen, den Rausch der Erotik und den Tod.

Zauberer und Lehrling

Inspiriert vom Surrealismus, wendet sich Picasso erneut dem Menschen zu. In freier, libidinöser Ausdrucksweise blickt er hinter die schöne Form. Wünsche und Ängste verbiegen das Objekt, deuten sexuelle Inhalte an. Picasso bewundert die Statuetten des Steinzeitmenschen, dem Kunst und Psychoanalyse einen von der Zivilisation ungehemmten Zugang zu Emotionen zuschreiben. Angeregt von einem Badeurlaub mit Ehefrau Olga und seiner heimlichen Geliebten Marie-Thérèse, malt er weiche, runde Badende, die erotisches Vergnügen und emotionale Spannung heraufbeschwören. Der Meeresstrand ist für die Surrealisten von Dalí bis Miró Genius Loci für Obsessionen und den Urzustand der Erde. Die surrealistisch-kubistischen Deformierungen des Körpers nutzt Picasso in seinem Antikriegsbild Guernica, um den Sadismus des Menschen anzuprangern.

Bacon zeigt sich unmittelbar nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg von Picassos surrealistischer Figuration beeinflusst. Seine Gefühle stellt Bacon mit allen Ambivalenzen und erotischen Obsessionen dar. Mit einer physisch überwältigenden Ölmalerei und nur intuitiv fassbarem Inhalt macht er die großen Emotionen seiner Kindheit wie Angst, Verletzung, Abwehr, Verzweiflung, Ohnmacht und Einsamkeit sichtbar. Zudem verleiht er seiner Ablehnung von Autoritäten, vom Vater bis zum faschistischen Diktator, Ausdruck. In seinen zähnefletschenden Kreaturen, die sich mit letzter Kraft zum existenziellen, archaisch anmutenden Schrei aufbäumen, spiegelt sich die von Leid und Isolation geprägte Nachkriegswelt. Bezeichnenderweise betitelt das Nachrichtenmagazin Time einen Artikel über die Ausstellung dieser Werkgruppe Bacons von 1953 „Snapshots from Hell“.

Neuerfindung der Tradition

In seinem Spätwerk zieht Picasso das Resümee seines Künstlerdaseins. Seine Neuinterpretationen alter Meister zählen zusammen mit Bacons Papstporträts nach Velázquez zu den berühmtesten Paraphrasen der Kunstgeschichte. Angesichts der Hochblüte der abstrakten Kunst in den 1950er Jahren sind sie ein Plädoyer für die Zukunft der Gegenständlichkeit.

Bacon verbindet das Alte mit populären Vorlagen wie der schreienden Krankenschwester aus Eisensteins Panzerkreuzer Potemkin und Fotografien faschistischer Potentaten. Stellen Picassos Porträts von 1930 in ihrer Unmittelbarkeit archaisch anmutende Obszönität zur Schau, wird der Mund bei Bacon zum bloßen Spasmus, das Gemalte zum Geschrei des Bildes selbst. Er stellt die göttlich legitimierte Macht des Papstes und die Autorität des Vaters in Frage. Die Ringkämpfer bieten sich an, um das explizite Sujet des homosexuellen Liebespaars zu verschleiern. Die unerwartete Kombination verschiedener Zitate dient der Subversion und Travestie.

Picasso beruft sich auf den unbestrittenen Vater der Moderne schlechthin: 1863 stellte Manet mit seinem Frühstück im Grünen eine nackte Frau ohne mythologische Legitimierung zwei bekleideten Männern gegenüber. In seinen Variationen der Naturidylle löst sich Picasso vom Vorbild: Er analysiert, dekonstruiert, rekonstruiert, deformiert und zerstört. Diesen subversiven Ikonoklasmus treibt folgerichtig die Pop-Art mit der Aneignung von Picassos Werk weiter.

Jenseits der Ähnlichkeit

Mit dem Erstarken des Faschismus in Europa vollzieht sich 1937 eine Zäsur in Picassos Werk. Die Nationalsozialisten führen eine Kampagne gegen die klassischen Moderne, allen voran den Kubismus. Diesen übersteigert Picasso nun im Sinn eines „surrealistischen Kubismus“. Der Mensch, dessen Abbild er schon im Kubismus strapaziert hat, wird in seinem Selbstverständnis erschüttert. Im Dunkel seines Ateliers, einem Laboratorium des Schreckens, stellt er die Porträts von Dora Maar und Marie Thérèse Walter in dichten Ensembles zur Schau: Dislokationen der Gesichtszüge, Verschiebungen der Proportionen, Münder wie von Totenköpfen. Die Deformation wird zum ästhetischen Widerstand.

Bacon wendet sich erst spät der Porträtmalerei zu, konzentriert sich dabei auf seine engsten Freunde, deren Augen- und Mundpartien er erbarmungslos verdreht, um all ihre Facetten und inneren Widersprüche aufzudecken. Er formt sein Menschenbild in den zwielichtigen Clubs von Soho, wo Bohème, Kriminalität, die Homosexuellenszene, Alkoholismus und Glücksspiel nebeneinander florieren. Im Triptychon wiederholt sich stereotyp ein und dasselbe Gesicht, was die Stabilität von Identität infrage stellt. Sich selbst präsentiert er als „Geschlagenen“, versehrt, bis zum Exhibitionismus bloßgestellt, geschminkt, eine Gesichtshälfte schwarz ausgestrichen, den Tod immer mitbedenkend. Bacon verletzt, häutet, seziert, zerstört bis zur Zerfleischung, holt die Realität gewaltsam unter der Oberfläche hervor.

More than 1,000 people, 40+ artists and over 400 participants will come together for a week of art, dialogue, cultural traditions and film

VIENNA, Austria – From 21 to 27 September 2026, Vienna will become a meeting place for cultures from around the world as the International Cultural Diversity Organization (ICDO) presents the ninth edition of the Long Nights of Interculturality.

Under the theme “Belonging Across Borders,” the festival is expected to welcome more than 1,000 people and cultural and artistic perspectives connected to approximately 40 countries. Highlights include an International Day of Peace panel, an exhibition featuring more than 40 artists, a participatory community art project and Costumes of the World at Vienna City Hall.

“Vienna is home to people with roots all over the world, but living side by side does not automatically mean meeting one another,” said Josipa Palac, President of ICDO. “Long Nights creates spaces where people can share their stories, traditions and experiences, meet across cultural boundaries and develop a stronger sense of belonging to the city we share.”

Culture, Identity and Peacebuilding

The festival opens on 21 September at 6:00 p.m., the International Day of Peace, with “Belonging Across Borders: Culture, Identity and Peacebuilding Panel” at the Azerbaijani Cultural Centre.

The panel brings together H.E. Manizha Bakhtari, Ambassador of Afghanistan to Austria and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Vienna; Dr. Anthony Löwstedt, Professor and Head of Media Communications at Webster Vienna Private University; and Dr. Melita H. Šunjić, former senior spokesperson and communication expert at UNHCR. International relations and disarmament specialist Eleonora Neri will moderate a discussion on how culture, identity, heritage and dialogue can strengthen social cohesion and peaceful coexistence.

More Than 40 Artists Explore Belonging

On 23 September at 6:00 p.m., the Yunus Emre Institute Art Gallery will open “Belonging Across Borders: Art as a Bridge for Memory and Reconciliation.” More than 40 emerging and established artists will explore migration, displacement, memory, heritage and identity, including artists from Côte d’Ivoire for the first time.

The exhibition is organized with the support of Art Advisor Norlito Meimban and Exhibition Coordinator Alina Cárdenas of AC Art & Culture, who is travelling from the Philippines to Vienna to support the exhibition’s artistic presentation.

A special component, “BELONGING – We Are Part of Everything,” is hosted by ICDO Sofía Andretta Juárez, Sonia Siblik and Marco Grajeda . Around 40 transformed photographic portraits of people aged 6 to 72—including participants connected to the Christine Nöstlinger Middle School and the Ute Bock community—will create a collective portrait of migration, identity and belonging in contemporary Vienna. The exhibition continues until 20 October 2026.

More Than 400 Participants Take the Stage at Vienna City Hall

On 25 September at 6:00p.m., the festival’s largest celebration,“Costumes of the World,” will fill the Festsaal of Vienna City Hall with traditional clothing, music, dance, international cuisine and cultural expression.

More than 400 participants with roots across Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America are expected to take part. The evening will showcase an extraordinary collection of handcrafted traditional costumes representing cultures from more than 35 countries, with each piece reflecting generations of heritage, artistry and cultural identity.

Visitors will also be able to explore 18 international food and cultural booths, offering flavours, traditions and cultural experiences from communities around the world. Live music, dance and artistic performances will bring these traditions to the stage, while cultural showcases and interactive photo opportunities will invite guests to engage with the festival throughout the evening.

Opening remarks will be delivered by Prof. Mag. Dr. Hermann Mückler, cultural and social anthropologist at the University of Vienna and ICDO advisor; Mag. Josipa Palac, President of ICDO; and a representative of the City of Vienna. Internationally acclaimed actor Peter Cvirn will moderate the evening, guiding audiences through the histories and stories represented by the traditional costumes.

The festival continues online on 26 September at 3:00 p.m. with a programme of international documentaries and short films presented through the ICDO YouTube channel.

WIEN, Österreich — Vom 21. bis 27. September 2026 wird Wien erneut zu einem internationalen Treffpunkt der Kulturen: Die International Cultural Diversity Organization (ICDO) präsentiert die neunte Ausgabe der Long Nights of Interculturality.

Unter dem diesjährigen Motto „Belonging Across Borders“ werden mehr als 1.000 Besucher sowie kulturelle und künstlerische Perspektiven mit Bezug zu rund 40 Ländern erwartet. Zu den Höhepunkten zählen eine Podiumsdiskussion anlässlich des Internationalen Friedenstages, eine Ausstellung mit mehr als 40 Künstler, ein partizipatives Community-Kunstprojekt sowie „Costumes of the World“ im Wiener Rathaus.

„Wien ist die Heimat von Menschen mit Wurzeln in der ganzen Welt. Doch nebeneinander zu leben bedeutet nicht automatisch, einander auch wirklich zu begegnen“, erklärt Josipa Palac, Präsidentin der ICDO. „Long Nights schafft Räume, in denen Menschen ihre Geschichten, Traditionen und Erfahrungen miteinander teilen, sich über kulturelle Grenzen hinweg begegnen und ein stärkeres Gefühl der Zugehörigkeit zu jener Stadt entwickeln können, die wir gemeinsam unser Zuhause nennen.“

Kultur, Identität und Friedensförderung

Das Festival wird am 21. September um 18:00 Uhr, dem Internationalen Tag des Friedens, mit der Podiumsdiskussion „Belonging Across Borders: Culture, Identity and Peacebuilding“ im Aserbaidschanischen Kulturzentrum eröffnet.

An der Diskussion nehmen I.E. Manizha Bakhtari, Botschafterin Afghanistans in Österreich und Ständige Vertreterin bei den Vereinten Nationen in Wien, Dr. Anthony Löwstedt, Professor und Leiter des Bereichs Media Communications an der Webster Vienna Private University, sowie Dr. Melita H. Šunjić, ehemalige leitende Sprecherin und Kommunikationsexpertin des UNHCR, teil.

Moderiert wird das Gespräch von der Expertin für internationale Beziehungen und Abrüstung Eleonora Neri. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Frage, wie Kultur, Identität, kulturelles Erbe und Dialog dazu beitragen können, den gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalt und ein friedliches Zusammenleben zu stärken.

Mehr als 40 Künstler setzen sich mit Zugehörigkeit auseinander

Am 23. September um 18:00 Uhr eröffnet in der Kunstgalerie des Yunus Emre Instituts die Ausstellung „Belonging Across Borders: Art as a Bridge for Memory and Reconciliation“.

Mehr als 40 aufstrebende und etablierte Künstler beschäftigen sich darin mit Themen wie Migration, Vertreibung, Erinnerung, kulturelles Erbe und Identität. Erstmals sind auch Künstler aus Côte d’Ivoire vertreten.

Die Ausstellung wird mit Unterstützung des Art Advisors Norlito Meimban sowie Alina Cárdenas von AC Art & Culture als Exhibition Coordinator organisiert. Für die Unterstützung der künstlerischen Präsentation reist sie eigens von den Philippinen nach Wien.

Mehr als 400 Mitwirkende auf der Bühne des Wiener Rathauses

Am 25. September um 18:00 Uhr findet mit „Costumes of the World“ der größte Festabend des Festivals statt. Der Festsaal des Wiener Rathauses wird dabei zu einer Bühne für traditionelle Kleidung, Musik, Tanz, internationale Kulinarik und kulturelle Vielfalt.

Mehr als 400 Mitwirkende mit Wurzeln in Europa, Asien, Afrika und Lateinamerika werden erwartet.

Der Abend präsentiert eine außergewöhnliche Sammlung handgefertigter traditioneller Kostüme aus Kulturen von mehr als 35 Ländern. Jedes einzelne Kleidungsstück erzählt von über Generationen weitergegebenem kulturellem Erbe, handwerklicher Kunst und Identität.

Darüber hinaus können Besucher 18 internationale Kulinarik- und Kulturstände entdecken, die Geschmäcker, Traditionen und kulturelle Erfahrungen verschiedener Communities aus aller Welt nach Wien bringen.

Live-Musik, Tanz und künstlerische Darbietungen bringen diese Traditionen auf die Bühne. Kulturelle Präsentationen und interaktive Fotomöglichkeiten laden die Gäste zugleich dazu ein, die Vielfalt des Festivals während des gesamten Abends unmittelbar zu erleben.

Die Eröffnungsworte sprechen Prof. Mag. Dr. Hermann Mückler, Kultur- und Sozialanthropologe an der Universität Wien und Berater der ICDO, Mag. Josipa Palac, Präsidentin der ICDO, sowie ein Vertreter der Stadt Wien.

Der international anerkannte Schauspieler Peter Cvirn moderiert den Abend und führt das Publikum durch die Geschichten, Traditionen und historischen Hintergründe der präsentierten Trachten und Kostüme.

Am 26. September um 15:00 Uhr wird das Festival online fortgesetzt. Über den YouTube-Kanal der ICDO wird ein Programm mit internationalen Dokumentar- und Kurzfilmen präsentiert.

Vienna is once again in full fashion mode. With a spectacular Opening Show last night, the Austrian capital officially launched the 18th edition of VIENNA FASHION WEEK. Until Saturday, 19 September, the MuseumsQuartier will bring together an exciting mix of Austrian and international designers, fashion professionals, prominent guests and fashion enthusiasts.

On 14 September, an impressive Opening Show marked the official start of VIENNA FASHION WEEK.26, one of the most important events on Austria’s fashion calendar.

Now celebrating its 18th edition, the event has grown into a major platform for Austrian and international fashion. Its story dates back to 2009, when the first MQ Vienna Fashion Week was held in the heart of the Austrian capital.

Last night, Halls E+G at Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier (MQ) became the epicentre of the country’s fashion scene. A red carpet, flashing lights, striking creations and the unmistakable atmosphere of a major European fashion event attracted numerous invited guests and visitors.

Among those in attendance was a veritable “who’s who” of Vienna’s fashion, creative and society scene, making the opening night as much about seeing as being seen.

This year’s Vienna Fashion Week runs from 14 to 19 September 2026, with around 40 designers and fashion projects announced. For six days, the MuseumsQuartier transforms into an international stage for fashion, trends and lifestyle.

Beyond the runway, Halls E+G also host a dedicated Shopping Area, pop-up stores and an extensive programme of accompanying events.

Six Days of Fashion in the Heart of Vienna

Following the glamorous opening night, the programme continues at full pace today. On 15 September, fashion shows and events run from 3 pm to 10 pm, while over the following days the Fashion Show Area will open according to the daily schedule, leading up to the grand finale on Saturday evening.

One of the most compelling aspects of this year’s programme is its mix of established Austrian names, emerging designers, fashion schools and international creatives. Over the years, this combination has become one of the defining characteristics of Vienna Fashion Week, creating a platform where experience meets experimentation and established fashion voices share the spotlight with a new generation.

Among the confirmed highlights is Atelier SNOW, which will present its sustainable bridal fashion concept, “Bridal Made to Re-Wear”, on 17 September.

The concept focuses on wedding dresses designed to have a life well beyond the wedding day, allowing them to be reinterpreted, transformed and worn again.

Also presenting on the same day is Helmet n Armour, a brand that brings together Austrian elegance and African craftsmanship.

On Friday, 18 September, audiences can look forward to collections by students of Modeschule Michelbeuern, presented under the title “Nahtschatten”.

At 9 pm, young Vienna-based designer Nicolas Dudek will take to the runway. At just 19 years old, Dudek is appearing at Vienna Fashion Week for the fifth consecutive year and has been presented by the organisers as the youngest designer in this year’s line-up.

A Grand Finale with Atıl Kutoğlu

All eyes will be on Saturday, 19 September, as VIENNA FASHION WEEK.26 prepares for its grand finale.

This year’s fashion week will conclude with the Closing Show by renowned Turkish-Austrian designer Atıl Kutoğlu, one of the most internationally recognised names associated with Vienna’s fashion scene.

Known for his distinctive creative signature and his ability to blend international influences with his longstanding connection to Vienna, Kutoğlu will provide a fitting fashion finale to six days filled with creativity, style and international flair.

His show is expected to be one of the highlights of the closing evening at the MuseumsQuartier, bringing VIENNA FASHION WEEK.26 to a suitably high-profile conclusion.

More Than the Runway: Fashion to Discover, Experience and Buy

Vienna Fashion Week has long been about more than a succession of runway shows. Its concept allows visitors to experience the collections they have just seen on the catwalk from a different perspective — up close, in direct contact with the designers, and, in some cases, with the opportunity to purchase selected pieces.

In Hall G, the Shopping Area and Pop-up Store invite visitors to discover designer pieces, street-style fashion and this year’s Vintage Corner.

It is precisely this combination of runway shows, direct interaction with designers and the opportunity to shop the collections that has become one of the distinctive features of Vienna Fashion Week.

Fashion talks are also part of the accompanying programme. On Wednesday, 16 September, the LOOK! Future Trend Talk – How to Create a Trend! will explore how trends emerge and evolve, as well as the ways in which social change and shifting lifestyles influence the fashion of tomorrow.

And later that evening, Vienna’s fashion crowd will move from the MuseumsQuartier to a venue high above the city.

Wien steht wieder ganz im Zeichen der Mode. Mit einer spektakulären Opening Show wurde gestern Abend in der österreichischen Hauptstadt die 18. Ausgabe der VIENNA FASHION WEEK eröffnet. Bis Samstag, den 19. September, bringt das Fashion-Event im MuseumsQuartier zahlreiche nationale und internationale Designer, Fashion Professionals, prominente Gäste und Modebegeisterte zusammen.

Am gestrigen 14. September fiel mit einer eindrucksvollen Opening Show bereits zum 18. Mal der Startschuss für die VIENNA FASHION WEEK.26, eines der bedeutendsten Events der österreichischen Modeszene. Die Geschichte der Veranstaltung reicht bis ins Jahr 2009 zurück, als die erste MQ Vienna Fashion Week stattfand.

Die Hallen E+G im Wiener MuseumsQuartier (MQ) verwandelten sich gestern Abend in den Mittelpunkt des heimischen Modegeschehens. Roter Teppich, Scheinwerferlicht, außergewöhnliche Kreationen und die Atmosphäre großer europäischer Fashion Events lockten zahlreiche geladene Gäste und Besucher an. Unter den Anwesenden zeigte sich dabei ein regelrechtes „Who’s who“ der Wiener Mode-, Kreativ- und Society-Szene.

Die diesjährige Vienna Fashion Week findet von 14. bis 19. September 2026 statt. Rund 40 Designer und Fashion-Projekte sind angekündigt. Sechs Tage lang verwandelt sich das MuseumsQuartier damit in eine internationale Bühne für Mode, Trends und Lifestyle. Neben dem Laufsteg bieten die Hallen E+G auch eine Shopping Area, Pop-up-Stores und ein umfangreiches Rahmenprogramm.

Sechs Tage Mode im Herzen Wiens

Nach dem glamourösen Auftakt geht das Programm heute mit vollem Tempo weiter. Am 15. September finden Fashion Shows und Events von 15 bis 22 Uhr statt. Auch an den darauffolgenden Tagen öffnet die Fashion Show Area entsprechend dem jeweiligen Tagesprogramm ihre Türen – bis zum großen Finale am Samstagabend.

Besonders spannend ist in diesem Jahr die Mischung aus etablierten österreichischen Namen, jungen Nachwuchsdesignern, Modeschulen und internationalen Kreativen. Gerade diese Kombination hat sich im Laufe der Jahre zu einem der Markenzeichen der Wiener Modewoche entwickelt.

Zu den bereits bestätigten Programmpunkten gehört beispielsweise Atelier SNOW, das am 17. September unter dem Motto „Bridal Made to Re-Wear“ ein nachhaltiges Bridal-Fashion-Konzept präsentiert. Im Mittelpunkt stehen Brautkleider, die so konzipiert sind, dass ihr Leben nicht mit dem Hochzeitstag endet, sondern sie auch danach neu interpretiert und getragen werden können.

Am selben Tag präsentiert sich Helmet n Armour, eine Marke, die österreichische Eleganz mit afrikanischer Handwerkstradition verbindet.

Am Freitag, den 18. September, darf sich das Publikum zudem auf die Kollektionen der Schülerinnen und Schüler der Modeschule Michelbeuern freuen, die unter dem Titel „Nahtschatten“ präsentiert werden.

Für 21 Uhr steht außerdem die Show des jungen Wiener Designers Nicolas Dudek auf dem Programm. Mit gerade einmal 19 Jahren ist Dudek in diesem Jahr bereits zum fünften Mal in Folge auf dem Laufsteg der Vienna Fashion Week vertreten. Von den Veranstaltern wird er als jüngster Designer des diesjährigen Line-ups präsentiert.

Großes Finale mit Atıl Kutoğlu

Besondere Aufmerksamkeit gilt dem Samstag, den 19. September, wenn die VIENNA FASHION WEEK.26 ihr großes Finale feiert.

Den Abschluss der diesjährigen Modewoche bildet die Closing Show des renommierten türkisch-österreichischen Designers Atıl Kutoğlu, eines der international bekanntesten Namen der Wiener Modeszene.

Kutoğlu, dessen unverwechselbare Handschrift seit Jahren internationale Einflüsse mit seiner engen Verbindung zu Wien vereint, setzt damit den modischen Schlusspunkt unter sechs Tage voller Fashion, Kreativität und internationalem Flair.

Seine Show dürfte zu den Höhepunkten des Abschlussabends im MuseumsQuartier zählen – und sorgt für ein entsprechend prominentes Finale der VIENNA FASHION WEEK.26.

Mehr als nur der Laufsteg: Mode zum Anfassen und Kaufen

Die Vienna Fashion Week ist längst mehr als eine Aneinanderreihung von Modenschauen. Das Konzept ermöglicht es dem Publikum, jene Kreationen, die kurz zuvor noch auf dem Catwalk zu sehen waren, anschließend aus nächster Nähe zu entdecken – und ausgewählte Stücke auch direkt zu kaufen.

In der Halle G laden die Shopping Area und der Pop-up-Store mit Designerstücken, Street-Style-Angeboten und dem diesjährigen Vintage Corner zum Entdecken und Shoppen ein.

Gerade diese Verbindung aus Fashion Shows, persönlichem Kontakt zu den Designern und unmittelbarer Shopping-Möglichkeit zählt zu den Besonderheiten der Wiener Modewoche.

Auch Fashion Talks gehören zum Rahmenprogramm. Am Mittwoch, den 16. September, findet der LOOK! Future Trend Talk – How to Create a Trend! statt. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die Entstehung und Entwicklung von Trends sowie die Frage, wie gesellschaftliche Veränderungen und neue Lebensstile die Mode von morgen beeinflussen.

Und am selben Abend zieht die Fashion Crowd vom MuseumsQuartier weiter über die Dächer Wiens: Die offizielle VIENNA FASHION WEEK.26 Aftershow Party findet am 16. September ab 22 Uhr im Das LOFT statt.

The Delegation of the Government of Catalonia to Central Europe hosted an institutional reception in Vienna on 10 September to mark Catalonia’s National Day, the Diada Nacional de Catalunya. The evening placed a particular emphasis on Catalonia’s position as an innovative business and investment destination and on strengthening economic ties with Central Europe. High-level representatives from politics, diplomacy, business and culture joined members of the Catalan community in Austria to exchange views on shared interests and explore new opportunities for cooperation.

A Ceremonial Opening with Diplomatic Remarks

At the beginning of the evening, Ms Krystyna Schreiber, Delegate of the Government of Catalonia to Central Europe, warmly welcomed the numerous guests with her opening remarks. This was followed by a gracious address by H.E. Aurora Mejía Errasquín, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain.

In her address, Krystyna Schreiber highlighted Catalonia’s role as an innovative and internationally oriented region:

“Catalonia has established itself as a leading Mediterranean hub for talent, research, technology, and entrepreneurship, attracting people and businesses from around the world. Yet Catalonia is about more than economic strength alone. It is the Catalan values of resilience, openness, solidarity, and creativity that have shaped the Catalonia of today. These values continue to lie at the very heart of our economic and innovation ecosystem.”

Schreiber also emphasised Catalonia’s contribution to a strong, democratic, united and competitive Europe, as well as the Delegation’s commitment to building bridges between Catalonia and Central Europe. She thanked the Delegation’s Central European partners for their longstanding, trusted and fruitful cooperation and acknowledged the commitment of the Catalan community. Shared values, open cooperation and sustainable prosperity, she stressed, are essential foundations for European cooperation at the regional level.

Distinguished Guests from Diplomacy, Politics and Business

Among the distinguished guests attending the reception was the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain to Austria, who thanked the Delegation for the invitation in Catalan, underscoring the strong cooperation between the Embassy and the Delegation.

The diplomatic corps was also represented by members of the embassies of the Republic, the Federal Republic of Germany, the United States of America, Georgia and the Republic of Cabo Verde. The General Representation of Flanders in Austria and Flanders Investment & Trade were also represented.

The reception furthermore brought together numerous representatives from Austrian politics and business, including members of the National Council and municipal councils, representatives of the Austrian Armed Forces, as well as representatives of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber and the Vienna Economic Chamber. Representatives of international organisations based in Vienna and various European and international institutions also attended the reception.

A particularly warm Benvinguts — “welcome” in Catalan — was extended to the Catalan community in Austria, as well as to the Delegation’s friends and partners.

Catalonia as a Hub for Innovation and Business

Alberto Martín, Director of Catalonia Trade & Investment, Catalonia’s economic development agency for the DACH region, presented Catalonia’s strengths as a business and investment destination to guests at the Diada reception in Vienna in a presentation entitled “Catalonia as a Business Location”.

The CUPRA Garage provided a fitting setting in which to showcase Catalonia as a dynamic European hub for technology, innovation and sustainable business. With its presence in the Austrian market and its focus on electric mobility, CUPRA also exemplifies the close connection between Catalonia’s innovation ecosystem and forward-looking technologies.

An Evening of Dialogue and Exchange

The reception also provided an opportunity to highlight the role of the Delegation of the Government of Catalonia to Central Europe as a key point of contact in the region — both for the Catalan community and Catalan stakeholders, as well as for Central European partners with an interest in Catalonia.

Working together with partners such as ACCIÓ, the Delegation contributes to strengthening existing ties while fostering new contacts, initiatives and opportunities for cooperation between Catalonia and Central Europe.

La Diada

The Diada Nacional de Catalunya is celebrated on 11 September. Beyond its historical significance, today it is also an expression of Catalan culture, identity and community. The Delegation serves as a point of contact for Catalans living in the region, whose engagement also makes them ambassadors of Catalan culture abroad.

 KATALANISCHER NATIONALFEIERTAG IN WIEN: Kataloniens Innovationskraft und europäisches Engagement im Mittelpunkt

Die Delegation der Regierung von Katalonien für Mitteleuropa hat am 10. September in Wien einen institutionellen Empfang anlässlich des katalanischen Nationalfeiertags, der Diada Nacional de Catalunya, veranstaltet. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt des Abends lag auf Katalonien als innovativem Wirtschafts- und Investitionsstandort sowie auf der Vertiefung der wirtschaftlichen Beziehungen mit Mitteleuropa. Dabei kamen hochrangige Vertreter:innen aus Politik, Diplomatie, Wirtschaft und Kultur sowie Mitglieder der katalanischen Community in Österreich zusammen und tauschten sich über gemeinsame Interessen und neue Möglichkeiten der Zusammenarbeit aus.

Ein feierlicher Auftakt mit diplomatischen Grußworten

Zu Beginn des Abends wendete sich Delegierte der Regierung von Katalonien in Mitteleuropa Frau Krystyna Schreiber mit einer Begrüßungsrede an die zahlreichen Gäste, darauf folgte eine nette Rede von I.E. Aurora Mejia Errasquin, Botschafterin des Königsreichs Spanien.

In ihrer Ansprache unterstrich Krystyna Schreiber die Rolle der Region Katalonien als innovativer und international ausgerichteter Standort:

„Katalonien hat sich zu einem führenden mediterranen Zentrum für Talente, Forschung, Technologie und Unternehmertum entwickelt und zieht Menschen und Unternehmen aus aller Welt an. Doch Katalonien steht für mehr als nur Wirtschaft. Es sind die katalanischen Werte wie Resilienz, Offenheit, Solidarität und Kreativität, die das Katalonien von heute geprägt haben. Und sie stehen weiterhin im Zentrum unseres Wirtschafts- und Innovationsökosystems.“

Schreiber betonte zugleich Kataloniens Beitrag zu einem starken, demokratischen, geeinten und wettbewerbsfähigen Europa sowie das Engagement der Delegation für den Brückenbau zwischen Katalonien und Mitteleuropa. Zugleich dankte die Delegierte den mitteleuropäischen Partner:innen für die langjährige, vertrauensvolle und fruchtbare Zusammenarbeit und würdigte das Engagement der katalanischen Community. Gemeinsame Werte, offene Zusammenarbeit und nachhaltiger Wohlstand seien zentrale Grundlagen für die europäische Zusammenarbeit auf regionaler Ebene.

Ehrengäste aus Diplomatie, Politik und Wirtschaft

Zu den Ehrengästen des Empfangs zählten die Botschafterin des Königreichs Spanien in Österreich, die sich auf Katalanisch für die Einladung bedankte und damit die gute Zusammenarbeit mit der Delegation unterstrich. Aus dem diplomatischen Corps waren außerdem Vertreter:innen der Botschaften der Republik, der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika, Georgiens und der Republik Kap Verde. Ebenfalls anwesend waren die Generaldelegation Flanderns für Österreich sowie die Wirtschafts- und Handelsvertretung Flandern. Darüber hinaus waren zahlreiche Vertreter:innen der österreichischen Politik und Wirtschaft anwesend, darunter National- und Gemeinderät:innen sowie Vertreter des österreichischen Bundesheeres, Vertreter:innen der Wirtschaftskammern Österreich und Wien. Auch Vertreter:innen internationaler Organisationen in Wien sowie verschiedener europäischer und internationaler Institutionen nahmen am Empfang teil.

Ein besonders herzliches Benvinguts (Willkommen auf Katalanisch) galt der katalanischen Community in Österreich sowie den Freund:innen und Partner:innen der Delegation.

Katalonien als Innovations- und Wirtschaftsstandort

Alberto Martín, Direktor von Catalonia Trade & Investment, der katalanischen Wirtschaftsagentur für die DACH-Region, stellte unter dem Titel „Catalonia as a Business Location“ die Stärken Kataloniens als Wirtschafts- und Investitionsstandort den Gästen der Diada in Wien, vor.

Die CUPRA Garage bot als Veranstaltungsort einen passenden Rahmen, um Katalonien als dynamischen europäischen Standort für Technologie, Innovation und nachhaltiges Wirtschaften zu präsentieren. Mit ihrer Präsenz auf dem österreichischen Markt und ihrem Fokus auf Elektromobilität unterstreicht CUPRA zugleich die Verbindung zwischen Kataloniens Innovationsökosystem und zukunftsorientierten Technologien.

Ein Abend des Dialogs und der Begegnung.

Der Empfang bot zugleich Gelegenheit, die Rolle der Delegation der Regierung von Katalonien in Mitteleuropa als Ansprechpartnerin vor Ort hervorzuheben – sowohl für die katalanische Gemeinschaft und katalanische Akteure in der Region als auch für mitteleuropäische Partner mit Interesse an Katalonien. In Zusammenarbeit mit Partnern wie ACCIÓ trägt die Delegation dazu bei, bestehende Verbindungen zu pflegen und neue Kontakte und Initiativen zwischen Katalonien und Mitteleuropa zu fördern.

La Diada

Die Diada Nacional de Catalunya wird am 11. September begangen. Über ihre historische Bedeutung hinaus ist sie heute ein Ausdruck katalanischer Kultur, Identität und Gemeinschaft. Die Delegation ist dabei Ansprechpartnerin für Katalaninnen und Katalanen vor Ort, die durch ihr Engagement zugleich als Botschafter katalanischer Kultur im Ausland wirken.

Registration plates, the “Pickerl” inspection, a driving licence and mandatory helmets are among the key changes

Users of e-scooters and e-mopeds in Austria are facing important regulatory changes. As of 1 September 2026, Wiener Linien introduced new rules governing the transport of e-scooters on Vienna’s public transport network. From 1 October, new regulations will also come into force for certain categories of e-mopeds, introducing mandatory registration, insurance, an appropriate driving licence and helmet use.

Electric scooters and mopeds have become an increasingly visible part of the urban mobility landscape in Austria and across European cities in recent years. Fast, practical and relatively inexpensive to operate, they offer users an efficient way to avoid crowded public transport and lengthy traffic jams during peak hours.

Their growing popularity, however, has also created new challenges. Pedestrians, cyclists and motorists increasingly share urban space with users of electric vehicles who may move between cycle lanes, roads and other traffic areas, sometimes creating unpredictable and potentially dangerous situations.

Against this backdrop, regulations governing these forms of mobility are becoming stricter.

New Rules for E-Scooters in Vienna from 1 September

The first major change took effect on 1 September 2026 and concerns the transport of e-scooters on vehicles operated by Wiener Linien, Vienna’s public transport operator.

E-scooters are now subject to the same transport rules as bicycles, including e-bikes.

In practical terms, this means that e-scooters are no longer permitted on Wiener Linien buses and trams, while they may only be taken onto the U-Bahn at specified times outside peak hours.

When Can E-Scooters Be Taken on the U-Bahn?

As of 1 September, e-scooters may be transported on the U-Bahn during the following periods:

• Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm
• Monday to Friday, from 6:30 pm until the end of service
• Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, all day

E-scooters may not be taken onto the U-Bahn during peak hours.

Folding the E-Scooter Does Not Change the Rule

An important provision also applies to foldable electric scooters.

Since 1 September, e-scooters have not been permitted on Wiener Linien buses or trams even when folded.

Under Wiener Linien’s transport regulations, folded e-scooters are not classified as hand luggage.

Different rules apply to conventional, non-electric scooters. As these take up significantly less space when folded, they may continue to be transported on all Wiener Linien vehicles at any time.

Violations Carry a €50 Fine

Passengers who fail to comply with the new transport rules may face a €50 fine.

This applies, for example, to passengers who take an e-scooter onto a tram or transport one on the U-Bahn during periods when e-scooters are not permitted.

There is another important safety rule users should be aware of.

Bicycles and e-scooters may only be pushed within Wiener Linien facilities and premises.

For safety reasons, the use of escalators while carrying or accompanying bicycles or e-scooters is also prohibited.

Major Changes from 1 October: New Rules for E-Mopeds

While the September changes primarily concern e-scooters on Vienna’s public transport network, significant changes for owners of certain categories of e-mopeds will come into force on 1 October 2026.

These vehicles will no longer be permitted to use cycle paths or cycle lanes.

This, however, is only one element of the new regulatory framework.

Registration and Insurance Become Mandatory

“Many e-moped owners are still unaware that from 1 October 2026 they will have to insure and register their vehicles. Anyone riding without a registration plate after that date will have to face the legal consequences,” warns Barbara Heis of Tiroler Versicherung.

Until now, e-mopeds covered by the change have effectively been classified in a manner similar to bicycles. Their legal status will now change.

From 1 October, certain e-mopeds will be classified as motor vehicles, meaning that they will be subject to regulations comparable to those applying to conventional mopeds with internal combustion engines.

The change applies to defined categories of e-mopeds, including Class L1e-B vehicles with a maximum speed of 25 km/h and a motor drive without pedal assistance.

These vehicles will require motor vehicle liability insurance and registration.

Registration Plates, “Pickerl”, Driving Licence and Mandatory Helmet

Following registration, owners will receive a registration plate, while their vehicles will also be subject to periodic roadworthiness inspections under Section 57a (§57a-Begutachtung), commonly known in Austria as the “Pickerl”.

In addition to mandatory insurance and registration, an appropriate driving licence will also be required from 1 October.

The use of a suitable protective helmet will also become mandatory.

Barbara Heis believes the new regulatory framework will contribute to improving safety on Austrian roads.

“The new regulation certainly makes sense and will increase the safety of all road users. In particular, the combination of training, mandatory helmet use and liability insurance strengthens protection in road traffic,” Heis says.

ÖAMTC Warns of Potentially High Penalties

ÖAMTC (Austrian Automobile, Motorcycle and Touring Club) has also drawn attention to the changes, reminding vehicle owners that failure to comply with the new regulations may result in significant penalties.

Financial penalties are not the only potential consequence.

In the event of an accident, the owner of an unregistered or uninsured vehicle could also face recourse claims from the insurance association.

Barbara Heis therefore advises owners affected by the new rules to arrange registration and insurance in good time.

No Need to Wait Until 1 October – Registration Is Already Possible

Owners of e-mopeds covered by the new regulations do not need to wait until the final deadline.

The vehicles can already be registered and insured.

The procedure requires vehicle documentation, proof of ownership and a valid photo ID.

Two Dates E-Scooter and E-Moped Users Should Remember

Two dates are particularly important for users of electric scooters and e-mopeds in Austria:

1 SEPTEMBER 2026 – Wiener Linien’s new rules governing the transport of e-scooters came into effect. E-scooters are no longer permitted on buses and trams, while they may only be taken onto the U-Bahn during specified periods. Violations of the transport regulations may result in a €50 fine.

1 OCTOBER 2026 – New regulations for certain categories of e-mopeds come into force. Among other measures, they introduce a ban on using cycle paths and cycle lanes, as well as requirements concerning registration, insurance, registration plates, an appropriate driving licence, periodic technical inspections and mandatory helmet use.

For owners of these vehicles, the key recommendation is straightforward: check which category your vehicle belongs to and make sure you are familiar with the requirements that will apply from 1 October.
