To mark its 250th anniversary, the ALBERTINA is, for the first time, devoting an exhibition to the history of the women artists represented in its collection, thereby retelling the history of art. Spanning the period from the 16th century to the 1970s, the exhibition demonstrates the decisive role women have played in shaping the development of art, even though their contributions long remained invisible or were forgotten.

Women artists have always been a part of art history – but their work has seldom received the recognition it deserves. This epoch-spanning exhibition takes stock for the first time of the women artists in the Albertina’s collection, presenting works from five centuries: from drawings and prints by early engravers and publishers, which were collected by Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen and Archduchess Maria Christina of Habsburg-Lorraine themselves, to modern artists and pioneering feminist artists of the 1970s. Through their biographies, Her Story presents women artists as commited, enterprising, and self-directed protagonists. At the same time, through a series of thematic chapters, the exhibition explores the social conditions that shaped women’s artistic production, offering a fresh perspective on art history through the lens of the collection.

The exhibition is based on a research project initiated by the ALBERTINA’s new General Director, Ralph Gleis, focusing on women artists across all areas of the museum’s collections. The result is a remarkable diversity and considerable number of outstanding works, many of which have rarely, if ever, been shown.

Featuring works by Maria Sibylla Merian, Rachel Ruysch, Rosalba Carriera, Angelika Kauffmann, Berthe Morisot, Käthe Kollwitz, Sonia Delaunay, Louise Bourgeois and Maria Lassnig.

HER STORY:  Künstlerinnen der ALBERTINA

Anlässlich des 250-jährigen Jubiläums betrachtet die ALBERTINA ihre Sammlung und deren Geschichte aus neuer Perspektive und widmet sich erstmals ihren Künstlerinnen in einer eigenen Ausstellung. Vom 16. Jahrhundert bis in die 1970er-Jahre zeigt die Schau, dass Frauen die Entwicklung der Kunst entscheidend mitgeprägt haben, auch wenn ihre Beiträge lange unsichtbar blieben oder vergessen wurden.

Künstlerinnen waren immer Teil der Kunstgeschichte – doch bis heute wurde ihr Schaffen nur selten angemessen beachtet. In einer epochenübergreifenden Bestandsaufnahme widmet sich die Ausstellung umfassend den Künstlerinnen in der Sammlung der Albertina. Präsentiert werden Werke aus fünf Jahrhunderten: von Zeichnungen und Druckgrafiken früher Kupferstecherinnen und Verlegerinnen, die bereits Herzog Albert von Sachsen-Teschen und Erzherzogin Marie Christine von Habsburg-Lothringen sammelten, über Künstlerinnen der Moderne bis zu frühen feministischen Positionen der 1970er-Jahre. Anhand ihrer Biografien zeigt Her Story Künstlerinnen als engagierte, unternehmerische und eigenständige Akteurinnen. Zugleich fragt die Ausstellung in thematischen Kapiteln nach den sozialen Bedingungen weiblicher Kunstproduktion und eröffnet damit aus der Sammlung heraus einen neuen Blick auf die Kunstgeschichte.

Die Ausstellung fußt auf einem von dem neuen ALBERTINA-Direktor Ralph Gleis angestoßenem Forschungsprojekt zu den Künstlerinnen in allen Sammlungsbereichen. Das Ergebnis: eine erstaunliche Vielfalt und beachtliche Anzahl von herausragenden Werken, die bislang wenig oder gar nicht gezeigt wurden.

Mit Werken von Maria Sibylla Merian, Rachel Ruysch, Rosalba Carriera, Angelika Kauffmann, Berthe Morisot, Käthe Kollwitz, Sonia Delaunay, Louise Bourgeois bis hin zu Maria Lassnig.

Ceremonial Reception in Vienna Marking Türkiye’s National Day

On the occasion of the 103rd anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Türkiye, H.E. Gürsel Dönmez, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Austria; H.E. Zeynep Kızıltan, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Türkiye to the OSCE; and H.E. Mustafa Kibaroğlu, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Türkiye to the United Nations in Vienna, hosted a ceremonial reception in the Austrian capital.

The invitation brought together numerous high-ranking members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of Austrian state institutions, as well as prominent members of the Turkish community in Vienna.

The reception marking the 103rd anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Türkiye took place on Thursday, 29 October, at the Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye in Vienna, located opposite the historic Belvedere Palace.

The celebrations opened with the national anthems of the Republic of Türkiye and the Republic of Austria, performed by two musicians of Turkish heritage, whose rendition was warmly applauded by the audience.

The assembled guests then watched a video address by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, delivered on the occasion of the 103rd anniversary of the Republic.

This was followed by remarks from Ambassadors Dönmez, Kızıltan, and Kibaroğlu, who addressed the guests and highlighted the significance of this important anniversary.

Following the official programme, the reception provided an opportunity for personal conversations and exchanges among representatives of the diplomatic, political, business and social communities.

In keeping with the tradition of Turkish hospitality, guests were treated to a selection of traditional specialities, including dolma, köfte and hummus, alongside a variety of other culinary delicacies.

Combining diplomatic exchange, tradition and Turkish hospitality, the festive reception in Vienna provided a fitting setting in which to celebrate the 103rd anniversary of the Republic of Türkiye.

Feierlicher Empfang in Wien anlässlich des türkischen Nationalfeiertags

Anlässlich des 103. Jahrestages der Proklamation der Republik Türkiye luden S.E. Gürsel Dönmez, Botschafter der Republik Türkiye in Österreich, I.E. Zeynep Kızıltan, Botschafterin und Ständige Vertreterin der Republik Türkiye bei der OSZE, sowie S.E. Mustafa Kibaroğlu, Botschafter und Ständiger Vertreter der Republik Türkiye bei den Vereinten Nationen in Wien, zu einem feierlichen Empfang ein.

Der Einladung der türkischen Botschafterinnen und Botschafter folgten zahlreiche hochrangige Vertreter des Diplomatischen Korps, Repräsentanten österreichischer staatlicher Institutionen sowie prominente Persönlichkeiten der türkischen Community in Wien.

Der Empfang anlässlich des 103. Jahrestages der Proklamation der Republik Türkiye fand am Donnerstag, dem 29. Oktober, in der Botschaft der Republik Türkiye in Wien, gegenüber dem Schloss Belvedere, statt.

Zu Beginn der Feierlichkeiten wurden die Nationalhymnen der Republik Türkiye und der Republik Österreich von zwei Musikerinnen türkischer Herkunft feierlich dargeboten und vom Publikum mit großem Applaus gewürdigt.

Im Anschluss verfolgten die versammelten Gäste eine Videoansprache des türkischen Präsidenten Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, die anlässlich des 103. Jahrestages der Republik ausgestrahlt wurde.

Danach richteten Botschafter Dönmez, Botschafterin Kızıltan und Botschafter Kibaroğlu ihre Grußworte an die anwesenden Gäste und unterstrichen die Bedeutung dieses besonderen Jahrestages.

Nach dem offiziellen Teil des Abends bot der Empfang Gelegenheit zu persönlichen Gesprächen und zum Austausch zwischen Vertretern aus Diplomatie, Politik, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft.

Ganz im Zeichen türkischer Gastfreundschaft wurden den Gästen traditionelle Spezialitäten serviert, darunter Dolma, Köfte und Hummus sowie eine Auswahl weiterer kulinarischer Köstlichkeiten.

Der festliche Empfang in Wien verband damit diplomatischen Austausch, Tradition und Kulinarik und bot einen würdigen Rahmen für die Feierlichkeiten zum 103. Jahrestag der Republik Türkiye.

Following the official programme, a musical interlude provided a fitting transition to the social part of the evening. An ethno ensemble performed traditional Czech melodies, offering guests a vibrant glimpse into the country’s rich cultural heritage.

Pilsen Region – Tradition, Culture and Culinary Heritage in the Spotlight

A special focus of this year’s reception was the Pilsen Region, whose distinctive character was also showcased through its culinary traditions. Alongside the world-famous Pilsner beer, guests were invited to sample wines from the region as well as a selection of regional specialities, offering an authentic taste of the gastronomic diversity of Western Bohemia.

The sunny weather added to the festive atmosphere, allowing the reception to continue in the beautiful garden of the historic Embassy residence. In this elegant and relaxed setting, guests had the opportunity to engage in conversation, exchange ideas and enjoy the hospitality of their hosts.

Anlässlich des Nationalfeiertages der Tschechischen Republik und zum Gedenken an die Gründung der Tschechoslowakei luden S.E. Jiří Šitler, Botschafter der Tschechischen Republik in Österreich, und S.E. Jan Marian, Botschafter und Ständiger Vertreter der Tschechischen Republik bei den Vereinten Nationen, der OSZE und anderen internationalen Organisationen in Wien, gemeinsam mit Kamal Farhan, Gouverneur der Region Pilsen, zu einem feierlichen Empfang ein.

Im offiziellen Teil der Veranstaltung begrüßte Botschafter Šitler die zahlreichen Gäste und würdigte die Bedeutung dieses besonderen Tages. Im Anschluss richteten auch Botschafter Marian und der Gouverneur der Region Pilsen, Kamal Farhan, einige Worte an die Anwesenden.

Nach dem offiziellen Programm sorgte ein musikalisches Intermezzo für einen stimmungsvollen Übergang zum gesellschaftlichen Teil des Abends. Ein Ethno-Ensemble präsentierte traditionelle tschechische Melodien und vermittelte den Gästen einen lebendigen Eindruck vom kulturellen Erbe des Landes.

Region Pilsen – Tradition, Kultur und Genuss im Mittelpunkt

Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt des Empfangs lag in diesem Jahr auf der Region Pilsen, die sich den Gästen auch kulinarisch präsentierte. Neben dem weltberühmten Pilsner Bier wurden Weine aus der Region sowie ausgewählte regionale Spezialitäten serviert und boten einen authentischen Einblick in die gastronomische Vielfalt Westböhmens.

Das sonnige Wetter trug zusätzlich zur festlichen Atmosphäre bei. So wurde der Empfang im Anschluss im schönen Garten des historischen Botschaftsgebäudes fortgesetzt, wo die Gäste Gelegenheit zu persönlichen Gesprächen und zum Austausch in entspannter Atmosphäre hatten.

Turkmenistan’s Independence Day Celebrated in Vienna

The 35th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s independence was marked with a festive reception at the historic Wiener Rathauskeller in Vienna. The event brought together representatives of the diplomatic corps, business community and the Turkmen community in Austria, while highlighting the strong bilateral relations between Turkmenistan and Austria.

On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s independence, H.E. Hemra Amannazarov, Ambassador of Turkmenistan to the Republic of Austria and Permanent Representative to the International Organisations in Vienna, and his wife, Keyik Karajayeva, hosted a festive reception in the Austrian capital.

The event took place on Wednesday, 21 October, at the Wiener Rathauskeller, welcoming numerous distinguished guests, including members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the Austrian business community and public life, as well as prominent members of the Turkmen community in Austria.

During the official part of the evening, H.E. Ambassador Hemra Amannazarov welcomed the guests and, in his address, reflected on the special significance of Independence Day for Turkmenistan.

He was followed by H.E. Ambassador Maximilian Hennig, Chief of Protocol at the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, who praised the strong bilateral cooperation between Austria and Turkmenistan. He also conveyed greetings from Austria’s Federal Minister for European and International Affairs, Beate Meinl-Reisinger.

The President of the Austrian-Turkmen Society Neda Berger also addressed the guests, offering an insight into the organisation’s work and activities. She highlighted its role in promoting dialogue, exchange and closer ties between the people of Austria and Turkmenistan, with a particular focus on bringing the two countries and their citizens closer together and further strengthening mutual relations.

Following the official programme, the reception provided an opportunity for guests to meet, exchange views and engage in conversation in a festive atmosphere. The evening also offered guests the opportunity to enjoy a selection of traditional Turkmen specialities.

The celebration of the 35th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s independence was therefore not only an important diplomatic occasion, but also an evening dedicated to dialogue, personal connections and friendship between Turkmenistan and Austria.

Die Veranstaltung brachte Vertreter des diplomatischen Korps, der Wirtschaft und der turkmenischen Gemeinschaft zusammen und stand zugleich im Zeichen der guten bilateralen Beziehungen zwischen Turkmenistan und Österreich.

Anlässlich des 35. Jahrestages der Unabhängigkeit Turkmenistans luden der Botschafter Turkmenistans in der Republik Österreich und Ständige Vertreter bei den internationalen Organisationen in Wien, S.E. Hemra Amannazarov, und seine Gattin Keyik Karajayeva zu einem feierlichen Empfang ein.

Die Veranstaltung fand am Mittwoch, dem 21. Oktober, im Wiener Rathauskeller statt. Zahlreiche Gäste folgten der Einladung, darunter Vertreter des diplomatischen Korps, der österreichischen Wirtschaft und des öffentlichen Lebens sowie prominente Mitglieder der turkmenischen Gemeinschaft in Österreich.

Im offiziellen Teil des Abends hieß S.E. Botschafter Hemra Amannazarov die Gäste willkommen und würdigte in seiner Ansprache die besondere Bedeutung des Unabhängigkeitstages für sein Land.

Anschließend wandte sich S.E. Botschafter Maximilian Hennig, Protokollchef des österreichischen Außenministeriums, an die Anwesenden. Er würdigte die gute bilaterale Zusammenarbeit zwischen Österreich und Turkmenistan und übermittelte zugleich die Grüße der österreichischen Bundesministerin für europäische und internationale Angelegenheiten, Beate Meinl-Reisinger.

Auch die Präsidentin der Österreichisch-Turkmenischen Gesellschaft Neda Berger richtete das Wort an die Gäste. Sie gab einen Einblick in die Arbeit und die Aktivitäten der Gesellschaft und betonte deren Rolle bei der Förderung des Austauschs und der Begegnung zwischen den Menschen in Österreich und Turkmenistan. Im Mittelpunkt stehe dabei insbesondere das Bestreben, die beiden Länder und ihre Menschen einander näherzubringen und die gegenseitigen Beziehungen weiter zu vertiefen.

Im Anschluss an den offiziellen Teil bot der Empfang Gelegenheit zu persönlichen Gesprächen und Begegnungen in festlicher Atmosphäre. Die Gäste konnten dabei auch traditionelle Spezialitäten der turkmenischen Küche genießen.

Die Feier des 35. Jahrestages der Unabhängigkeit Turkmenistans wurde damit nicht nur zu einem festlichen diplomatischen Anlass, sondern auch zu einem Abend der Begegnung, des Dialogs und der Freundschaft zwischen Turkmenistan und Österreich.

On the occasion of Spain’s National Day, H.E. Aurora Mejía, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain to the Republic of Austria, and H.E. María Sebastián de Erice, Permanent Representative of Spain to the International Organisations in Vienna, hosted a festive reception at the Embassy of Spain in Vienna on Monday, 12 October.

The reception brought together a distinguished gathering of guests, including members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of Austrian politics and business, as well as prominent figures from the worlds of art, culture and society. Members of the Spanish community in Austria were also present in significant numbers, reflecting the close and multifaceted ties between Spain and Austria.

Diplomacy, Friendship and European Unity

The official part of the celebration opened with the national anthems of Austria and Spain, followed by the European anthem. Ambassador Aurora Mejía and Permanent Representative María Sebastián de Erice then addressed the guests, highlighting the longstanding friendship between Spain and Austria, as well as the importance of international cooperation and European unity.

A Taste of Spain in the Heart of Vienna: Jamón Ibérico and Spanish Wines

Following the official programme, the focus shifted to Spanish hospitality and the country’s celebrated culinary traditions.

Guests were treated to a selection of Spanish specialities accompanied by fine wines from different regions of Spain, bringing an authentic taste of the Iberian Peninsula to Vienna.

One of the culinary highlights was Jamón Ibérico, expertly carved by a professional Cortador de Jamón in front of the guests. The traditional art of hand-carving the ham into paper-thin slices offered not only an exceptional gastronomic experience, but also a glimpse into one of Spain’s most distinctive culinary traditions.

Paella for Everyone

Vienna’s pleasant autumn weather provided the perfect setting for the celebration to continue in the Embassy garden. There, an impressive freshly prepared paella was served to the guests, bringing a touch of Mediterranean warmth and Spanish joie de vivre to the Austrian capital.

With Spanish cuisine, fine wines and lively conversation in a relaxed atmosphere, the reception combined diplomacy and international exchange with the warmth and hospitality for which Spain is renowned.

Anlässlich des spanischen Nationalfeiertags luden I.E. Aurora Mejía, Botschafterin des Königreichs Spanien in der Republik Österreich, und I.E. María Sebastián de Erice, Ständige Vertreterin Spaniens bei den internationalen Organisationen mit Sitz in Wien, am Montag, dem 12. Oktober, zu einem feierlichen Empfang in die Spanische Botschaft in Wien ein.

Zahlreiche hochrangige Gäste folgten der Einladung. Unter den Anwesenden befanden sich Vertreterinnen und Vertreter des diplomatischen Korps, der österreichischen Politik und Wirtschaft sowie Persönlichkeiten aus Kunst, Kultur und Gesellschaft. Auch zahlreiche Mitglieder der spanischen Gemeinschaft in Österreich nahmen an der Feier teil und unterstrichen damit die engen und vielfältigen Beziehungen zwischen Spanien und Österreich.

Diplomatie, Freundschaft und europäische Verbundenheit

Der offizielle Teil der Veranstaltung begann mit den Hymnen Österreichs und Spaniens sowie der Europahymne. Im Anschluss begrüßten Botschafterin Aurora Mejía und die Ständige Vertreterin María Sebastián de Erice die versammelten Gäste und würdigten in ihren Ansprachen die freundschaftlichen Beziehungen zwischen Spanien und Österreich sowie die Bedeutung der internationalen Zusammenarbeit und des europäischen Zusammenhalts.

Zu den Ehrengästen des Empfangs zählte auch Bundespräsident a.D. Dr. Heinz Fischer, der von 2004 bis 2016 das Amt des österreichischen Bundespräsidenten bekleidete. Seine Anwesenheit verlieh der Feier eine besondere Note und unterstrich zugleich die traditionell guten Beziehungen zwischen beiden Ländern.

Spanische Lebensart im Herzen Wiens: Jamón Ibérico und spanische Weine

Nach dem offiziellen Teil stand die spanische Gastfreundschaft im Mittelpunkt. Auch kulinarisch präsentierte sich Spanien von seiner besten Seite. Serviert wurden ausgewählte Spezialitäten der spanischen Küche, begleitet von hervorragenden Weinen aus verschiedenen Regionen des Landes.

Ein besonderer Blickfang war der Jamón Ibérico, der von einem professionellen Cortador de Jamón direkt vor den Augen der Gäste fachgerecht von Hand aufgeschnitten wurde. Die traditionsreiche Kunst des hauchdünnen Schneidens des iberischen Schinkens sorgte nicht nur für ein besonderes Geschmackserlebnis, sondern vermittelte den Gästen auch ein Stück authentischer spanischer Esskultur.

Paella für alle

Das angenehme Wiener Herbstwetter bot den idealen Rahmen, um einen Teil des Empfangs in den Garten der Botschaft zu verlegen. Dort wurde für die Gäste eine beeindruckende, frisch zubereitete Paella serviert – ein kulinarischer Höhepunkt, der mediterranes Flair in die österreichische Hauptstadt brachte.

Six new diplomatic representatives presented their credentials to Austrian Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen

Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen welcomed six new ambassadors to the Presidential Chancellery on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, where they formally presented their credentials.

The ceremony marked the official beginning of their diplomatic missions in Austria. As newly accredited ambassadors, they now assume their roles as the highest-ranking diplomatic representatives of their respective countries in the Republic of Austria.

A warm welcome to the new ambassadors representing the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Republic of Honduras, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the Kingdom of Norway, the State of Kuwait, and the Sultanate of Oman.

With the formal presentation of their credentials to the Federal President, they are now officially accredited as diplomatic representatives of their respective countries to the Republic of Austria.

In their new roles, they will play a key part in fostering and deepening bilateral relations, promoting political and diplomatic dialogue, and further advancing cooperation between their respective countries and the Republic of Austria.

Their assumption of office also opens a new chapter in diplomatic cooperation with Austria – one shaped by dialogue, partnership, and a shared commitment to further strengthening international relations.

Bundespräsident Alexander Van der Bellen empfing am Dienstag, dem 6. Oktober 2026, sechs neue Botschafter in der Präsidentschaftskanzlei, wo sie ihm feierlich ihre Beglaubigungsschreiben überreichten.

Mit dieser Zeremonie begann offiziell ihre diplomatische Tätigkeit in Österreich. Als neu akkreditierte Botschafter übernehmen sie die Aufgabe, ihre jeweiligen Staaten auf höchster diplomatischer Ebene in der Republik Österreich zu vertreten.

Ein herzliches Willkommen gilt den neuen Botschaftern der Republik Aserbaidschan, der Republik Honduras, des Großherzogtums Luxemburg, des Königreichs Norwegen, des Staates Kuwait und des Sultanats Oman.

Mit der feierlichen Überreichung ihrer Beglaubigungsschreiben an den Bundespräsidenten sind sie nun offiziell als diplomatische Vertreter ihrer jeweiligen Staaten in der Republik Österreich akkreditiert.

In ihren neuen Funktionen werden sie eine zentrale Rolle bei der Pflege und Vertiefung der bilateralen Beziehungen, der Förderung des politischen und diplomatischen Dialogs sowie bei der weiteren Entwicklung der Zusammenarbeit zwischen ihren jeweiligen Ländern und der Republik Österreich übernehmen.

Mit ihrem Amtsantritt beginnt zugleich ein neues Kapitel der diplomatischen Zusammenarbeit mit Österreich – geprägt von Dialog, Partnerschaft und dem gemeinsamen Bestreben, die internationalen Beziehungen weiter zu stärken.

The vineyards overlooking Vienna once again became one of the Austrian capital’s most beautiful stages last weekend. The traditional Wiener Weinwandertag brought together wine lovers, nature enthusiasts and walkers, who on 26 and 27 September had the opportunity to discover the city from an entirely different perspective – among rows of vines, wine cellars and Vienna’s famous Heuriger wine taverns.

Vienna is renowned for imperial landmarks such as Schönbrunn Palace and the Hofburg, the world-famous Vienna State Opera (Wiener Staatsoper) and the magnificent architecture of the former Habsburg capital.

Yet there is another side to the city that many visitors discover only when they venture beyond the historic centre: Vienna is also a city of vineyards.

And not merely a few symbolic plots on the outskirts.

According to the City of Vienna, vineyards cover around 600 hectares, while approximately 170 wine-growing businesses operate within the city.

This unusual relationship between a major European metropolis and a centuries-old wine-growing tradition comes into its own every autumn during the Wiener Weinwandertag – Vienna Wine Hiking Day.

This year’s event took place over the weekend of 26 and 27 September, from 10 am to 6 pm, with access to all hiking routes free of charge.

Four Routes Through Vienna’s Vineyards

Visitors could choose between four routes across different parts of the city.

The longest stretched from Neustift to Nussdorf in Vienna’s 19th district, covering approximately 10.8 kilometres. Another major route, around 9.6 kilometres long, connected Strebersdorf and Stammersdorf in the 21st district.

Shorter alternatives were available for those who did not want to spend the entire day hiking.

A circular route through Ottakring, in the 16th district, covered around 2.4 kilometres, while the trail through Mauer, in Vienna’s southern 23rd district, extended for approximately 4.6 kilometres.

There was, however, no need to complete an entire route.

Visitors could choose individual sections, stop at local wineries, take a break over a glass of wine and something to eat, and then either continue walking or make their way back into the city.

It is precisely this relaxed format that makes the Weinwandertag attractive to such a broad audience – from serious wine enthusiasts and keen hikers to families with children and tourists looking to discover a less familiar side of Vienna.

Tasting Wine Where It Is Actually Made

Part of the special charm of the Weinwandertag is that the wine is not tasted in a conventional exhibition hall or at a trade fair, but practically where it is produced.

The trails wind their way through vineyards and past wine estates, while numerous winemakers and traditional Heuriger taverns along the routes set up stops for visitors.

Viennese wines are accompanied by local specialities, cold platters, spreads, cheeses and other dishes traditionally associated with Vienna’s wine-tavern culture.

Among the stops on this year’s routes was the city-owned Weingut Wien Cobenzl, where visitors could sample wines from Cobenzl while also discovering regional products.

But the Weinwandertag is about much more than wine tasting.

The vineyard-covered slopes to the north and west of the city centre offer sweeping views across Vienna, the Danube and the surrounding hills. For many visitors, the walk itself is every bit as important as the glass of wine waiting at the next stop.

Tens of Thousands Take to the Vineyards

The scale of the event’s popularity is reflected in the number of visitors it attracts.

Ahead of this year’s Weinwandertag, Austrian public broadcaster ORF reported that around 40,000 people were expected across the four routes.

Such figures may come as a surprise to those who associate Vienna primarily with urban life. For the Viennese, however, the vineyards are much more than a tourist attraction.

They are part of the city’s identity.

Nussberg, Kahlenberg, Bisamberg, Neustift, Stammersdorf and Mauer are just some of the areas where wine-growing traditions have been cultivated for centuries.

As a result, only a few kilometres from the heart of the Austrian capital, visitors can suddenly find themselves walking between rows of vines, with views extending across almost the entire city.

What Exactly Is a “Heuriger”?

It is difficult to fully understand the Weinwandertag without another distinctly Austrian – and particularly Viennese – institution: the Heuriger.

The word “Heuriger” can refer both to young wine from the current vintage and to a traditional wine tavern where a winemaker serves their own wine.

Unlike a conventional restaurant, the atmosphere at a Heuriger is generally simpler, more informal and decidedly relaxed. Guests tend to linger at the tables, wine is ordered by the glass or in larger quantities, and it is usually accompanied by straightforward local food.

It is precisely this Heuriger culture that has given Vienna’s vineyards their unique social significance.

People do not come here simply to taste wine. They come for the company, the views, the food and the atmosphere.

During the Weinwandertag, this tradition effectively leaves the wine taverns and moves directly into the vineyards.

A Metropolis Where Vines Are More Than Decoration

What makes Vienna particularly unusual is that viticulture has not survived merely as tourist folklore.

Wine is still actively produced across approximately 600 hectares of vineyards within the city, while numerous wine-growing businesses continue a tradition deeply intertwined with the history of the Austrian capital.

Among Vienna’s best-known wines, Wiener Gemischter Satz holds a particularly important place and has become one of the symbols of the city’s wine culture.

In a traditional Wiener Gemischter Satz vineyard, different grape varieties grow together in the same vineyard, are harvested together and are also processed together. This method is an integral part of Vienna’s historic winemaking tradition.

The Weinwandertag therefore represents something broader than an ordinary tourist event.

It reminds both residents and visitors that behind the postcard images of Vienna’s vineyards lies a living agricultural, culinary and cultural tradition.

Vienna from a Perspective the Ringstrasse Cannot Offer

Anyone who knows Vienna primarily through Stephansplatz, Kärntner Strasse, the Hofburg or Schönbrunn can discover an entirely different city during the Weinwandertag.

Instead of trams and city traffic – rows of vines.

Instead of shop windows – small stands run by local winemakers.

Instead of grand façades – panoramic views of the Danube and Vienna’s rooftops.

That contrast is one of the event’s greatest attractions.

Within a matter of minutes by public transport, visitors can leave the centre of a major European capital and arrive in landscapes that, in places, resemble the wine villages of Lower Austria far more than the territory of a large city.

And then, with a glass of Viennese wine in hand, the skyline of the metropolis suddenly appears again in the distance.

Autumn in Vienna Begins Among the Vineyards

The Wiener Weinwandertag is therefore neither a conventional wine festival nor simply an organised hike.

It brings together two traditions that Vienna has carefully preserved: a love of the outdoors and a deeply rooted culture of local wine.

For two days in September, the vineyards become an enormous open-air promenade where Viennese residents, tourists, families, hikers and wine lovers meet along the trails.

And perhaps the Weinwandertag illustrates one of the Austrian capital’s lesser-known qualities better than almost anything else:

In Vienna, you do not have to leave the city to escape to the vineyards – you simply board public transport and travel a few stops beyond the centre.

As autumn slowly begins to change the colour of the leaves above the Danube, thousands of people did exactly that last weekend – swapping city streets for paths between the vines and once again demonstrating why, in Vienna, wine is not merely a drink.

It is part of the city’s identity.

“The World in Harmony” brought together sacred music, cultural heritage and the distinctive choral tradition of one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s most renowned choirs in the heart of Vienna.

As part of the “Days of Semberija in Austria”, H.E. Siniša Bencun, Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the Republic of Austria, welcomed guests to the concert “The World in Harmony”, held on 26 September at St. Peter’s Church (Peterskirche) in Vienna. The event series is jointly organised by the Embassy of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Representation of Republika Srpska in Austria and the Semberija Cultural Centre.

In the magnificent sacred setting of St. Peter’s Church, the mixed choir of the Serbian Choral Society “Srbadija” from Bijeljina, conducted by Prof. Dr. Jelena Trakilović, presented an impressive programme of sacred and liturgical music.

Music as a Universal Language

The event opened with welcoming remarks by Ambassador Bencun, who greeted the numerous guests in attendance. The concert then began under the title “The World in Harmony” – a name that also reflected the central message of the event.

On this occasion, music became a universal language, transcending cultural and geographical boundaries and bringing people together.

The magnificent Baroque interior and sacred atmosphere of St. Peter’s Church provided a remarkable setting for the performance. The church’s distinctive acoustics added depth and resonance to the voices, allowing the spiritual character of the compositions to unfold with particular intensity.

Performing before numerous invited guests, as well as visitors and tourists who happened to be in the church and spontaneously became part of the audience, “Srbadija” demonstrated the vocal strength, musical precision and artistic discipline of an ensemble shaped by a long and distinguished choral tradition.

More Than 125 Years of Choral Tradition from Bijeljina

The Serbian Choral Society “Srbadija” was founded in 1899 in Bijeljina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and was re-established in 1992 following several historical interruptions. Its diverse repertoire combines Orthodox sacred and liturgical music, works by Serbian composers, and traditional and folk melodies, including arrangements of Serbian folk songs.

This combination of sacred music, tradition and contemporary choral interpretation was also strongly present at the Vienna concert. “Srbadija” appeared not only as an accomplished musical ensemble, but also as an ambassador of a rich cultural heritage that has been preserved and passed down through generations.

 „Die Welt in Harmonie“ brachte im Herzen Wiens geistliche Musik, kulturelles Erbe und die besondere Klangtradition eines der traditionsreichsten Chöre aus Bosnien und Herzegowina zusammen.

Im Rahmen der Veranstaltung „Tage der Semberija in Österreich“ lud S.E. Siniša Bencun, Botschafter von Bosnien und Herzegowina in der Republik Österreich, am 26. September zum Konzert „Die Welt in Harmonie“ in die Peterskirche in Wien ein. Die Veranstaltungsreihe wird gemeinsam von der Botschaft von Bosnien und Herzegowina, der Vertretung der Republika Srpska in Österreich und dem Kulturzentrum Semberija organisiert.

Im prachtvollen sakralen Ambiente der Peterskirche präsentierte der gemischte Chor des Serbischen Gesangsvereins „Srbadija“ aus Bijeljina unter der Leitung von Prof. Dr. Jelena Trakilović ein eindrucksvolles Programm geistlicher und kirchenmusikalischer Werke.

Musik als Sprache der Verständigung

Eröffnet wurde die Veranstaltung mit einer Begrüßungsansprache von Botschafter Bencun, der die zahlreichen Gäste willkommen hieß. Anschließend begann das Konzert, dessen Titel – „Die Welt in Harmonie“ – zugleich die zentrale Botschaft der Veranstaltung zum Ausdruck brachte.

Musik wurde an diesem Tag zu einer universellen Sprache, die kulturelle und geografische Grenzen überwindet und Menschen miteinander verbindet.

Die barocke, sakrale Atmosphäre der Peterskirche bot dafür einen außergewöhnlichen Rahmen. Die besondere Akustik des Kirchenraums verlieh den Stimmen zusätzliche Tiefe und ließ die geistlichen Kompositionen mit großer Intensität zur Geltung kommen.

Vor zahlreichen geladenen Gästen sowie Wien-Besuchern und Touristen, die sich zu diesem Zeitpunkt in der Kirche befanden und spontan zu Zuhörern wurden, zeigte „Srbadija“ die stimmliche Kraft und musikalische Disziplin eines Ensembles mit einer langen Chortradition.

Mehr als 125 Jahre Chortradition aus Bijeljina

Der Serbische Gesangsverein „Srbadija“ wurde 1899 in Bijeljina in Bosnien und Herzegowina gegründet und nach historischen Unterbrechungen 1992 wiedergegründet. Sein vielseitiges Repertoire verbindet orthodoxe geistliche und liturgische Musik mit Werken serbischer Komponisten sowie traditionellen und folkloristischen Melodien, darunter Bearbeitungen serbischer Volkslieder.

Diese Verbindung von sakraler Musik, Tradition und zeitgenössischer chorischer Interpretation war auch beim Konzert in Wien deutlich spürbar. „Srbadija“ präsentierte sich dabei nicht nur als musikalisches Ensemble, sondern zugleich als Botschafter eines kulturellen Erbes, das über Generationen weitergegeben wird.

VIENNA, 22 September – Montenegro marked Armed Forces Day in Vienna with an official ceremony and reception attended by senior representatives of Austria and Montenegro, as well as numerous members of the diplomatic and military corps.

The event was hosted by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Montenegro to the Republic of Austria, H.E. Stanica Anđić, and Colonel Velimir Obradović, Defence Attaché of Montenegro to the Republic of Austria and Senior Military Adviser to the OSCE, the United Nations and other international organisations in Vienna.

Held on 22 September at the Officers’ Casino of the Maria Theresia Barracks in Vienna, the celebration brought together representatives of the diplomatic community and defence institutions, as well as military attachés accredited to Austria.

Among the distinguished guests were Dr. Arnold H. Kammel, MA, Secretary General of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Defence, and Marko Marković, State Secretary at the Ministry of Defence of Montenegro.

Their presence underscored the importance of bilateral relations between Austria and Montenegro, as well as the ongoing dialogue between the two countries in the fields of defence and security cooperation.

The official programme opened with welcoming remarks by Ambassador Stanica Anđić, followed by an address by State Secretary Marko Marković. The closing remarks were delivered by Colonel Velimir Obradović, who addressed the assembled representatives of the diplomatic and military community.

Following the official programme, guests were invited to a reception at the Officers’ Casino, providing an opportunity for informal conversations, professional exchange and further networking among members of Vienna’s diplomatic and military community.

WIEN, 22. September – Montenegro beging den Tag seiner Streitkräfte in Wien mit einer feierlichen Veranstaltung und einem Empfang, an dem hochrangige Vertreter Österreichs und Montenegros sowie zahlreiche Mitglieder des diplomatischen und militärischen Korps teilnahmen.

Gastgeber der Veranstaltung waren die außerordentliche und bevollmächtigte Botschafterin Montenegros in der Republik Österreich, I.E. Stanica Anđić, und Oberst Velimir Obradović, Verteidigungsattaché Montenegros in der Republik Österreich und leitender Militärberater bei der OSZE, den Vereinten Nationen und weiteren internationalen Organisationen in Wien.

Die Feier fand am 22. September im Offizierskasino der Maria-Theresien-Kaserne in Wien statt und brachte Vertreter der diplomatischen Gemeinschaft, der Verteidigungsinstitutionen sowie in Österreich akkreditierte Militärattachés zusammen.

Hochrangige Vertreter Österreichs und Montenegros

Die Schlussworte sprach Oberst Velimir Obradović, der sich an die versammelten Vertreter der diplomatischen und militärischen Gemeinschaft wandte.

Im Anschluss an den offiziellen Teil waren die Gäste zu einem Empfang im Offizierskasino eingeladen. Dieser bot Gelegenheit zu persönlichen Gesprächen, zum fachlichen Austausch und zur weiteren Vernetzung innerhalb des diplomatischen und militärischen Korps in Wien.

Marking World Tourism Day, the Weltmuseum Wien became a vibrant showcase of Slovenian hospitality, gastronomy and culture. Bringing together distinguished guests from Austria and Slovenia, the Slovenia Evening offered an authentic taste of the country and highlighted the close ties between the two neighbouring nations.

Slovenia in the Heart of Vienna

On Monday, 21 September, the Slovenian Tourist Board in Vienna hosted a special Slovenia Evening in the historic setting of the Weltmuseum Wien. Fine cuisine, wine, music and personal encounters came together in an atmospheric presentation of a country increasingly recognised as one of Europe’s distinctive destinations for sustainable tourism and outstanding gastronomy.

Among the many distinguished guests from both countries was H.E. Marko Štucin, Ambassador of the Republic of Slovenia to Austria. His presence also added a diplomatic dimension to the evening and underscored the close ties between the two neighbouring countries.

The event was opened by Žana Marijan, Director of the Slovenian Tourist Board in Vienna, who welcomed the guests and invited them to discover Slovenia through its tourism, culinary traditions and cultural identity.

“From Bohinj” – Alpine Heritage Meets Contemporary Cuisine

Under the motto “From Bohinj”, the evening placed the spotlight on one of Slovenia’s most remarkable regions. Nestled in the Julian Alps, Bohinj is synonymous with pristine nature, Alpine traditions and an approach to tourism that places local identity and sustainability at its heart.

Klemen Langus, Director of Tourism Bohinj, took the audience on a journey through the region’s spectacular landscapes and distinctive character, offering an insight into what makes Bohinj such a compelling destination.

The culinary journey also led directly to the Julian Alps. Davor Arnautović of Gourmet Vila Muhr in Bohinj, awarded four Gault&Millau toques, presented his contemporary interpretation of regional cuisine. Named “Chef of the Future 2026,” Arnautović demonstrated how Alpine traditions and local ingredients can be transformed through the language of contemporary haute cuisine.

His creations were accompanied by selected wines from Goriška Brda, one of Slovenia’s most renowned wine regions, offering guests a sophisticated glimpse into the diversity of the country’s culinary landscape.

Culture as a Bridge

The evening’s musical programme was provided by Severa and Gal Gjurin, whose distinctive interpretation of Slovenian folk and ethno music blended traditional sounds with contemporary expression, adding another layer to the cultural experience.

The Slovenia Evening was therefore much more than a tourism presentation. Gastronomy, wine, music and personal encounters came together to create an authentic portrait of the country while highlighting the cultural and human connections that unite Austria and Slovenia.

In the unique atmosphere of the Weltmuseum Wien, the evening ultimately showcased one of Slovenia’s finest calling cards: hospitality that is not simply presented, but genuinely lived.

Slowenien zu Gast in Wien: Genuss, Kultur und gelebte Gastfreundschaft

Im Zeichen des Welttourismustages wurde das Weltmuseum Wien zum Treffpunkt slowenischer Gastfreundschaft, Kulinarik und Kultur. Der Slowenien-Abend vereinte hochrangige Gäste aus Österreich und Slowenien und präsentierte das Land von seiner genussvollen und authentischen Seite.

Slowenien im Herzen Wiens

Am Montag, dem 21. September, lud das Slowenische Tourismusbüro in Wien zu einem besonderen Slowenien-Abend in die historische Kulisse des Weltmuseums Wien. Kulinarik, Wein, Musik und persönliche Begegnungen verbanden sich zu einer stimmungsvollen Präsentation eines Landes, das sich zunehmend als nachhaltige und hochwertige europäische Tourismus- und Gastronomiedestination positioniert.

Unter den zahlreichen namhaften Gästen aus beiden Ländern war auch S.E. Marko Štucin, Botschafter der Republik Slowenien in Österreich. Seiner Anwesenheit verlieh dem Abend zugleich eine diplomatische Note und unterstrich die engen Beziehungen zwischen den beiden Nachbarländern.

Eröffnet wurde die Veranstaltung von Žana Marijan, Direktorin des Slowenischen Tourismusbüros in Wien, die die Gäste zu einer Reise durch die touristischen, kulinarischen und kulturellen Facetten Sloweniens willkommen hieß.

„From Bohinj“ – alpine Identität und moderner Genuss

Im Mittelpunkt des Abends stand unter dem Motto „From Bohinj“ eine der eindrucksvollsten Regionen Sloweniens. Eingebettet in die Julischen Alpen, steht Bohinj für unberührte Natur, alpine Tradition und einen Tourismus, der Regionalität und Nachhaltigkeit miteinander verbindet.

Der als „Chef der Zukunft 2026“ ausgezeichnete Küchenchef zeigte dabei, wie sich alpine Tradition, lokale Produkte und zeitgenössische Haute Cuisine miteinander verbinden lassen.

Begleitet wurden seine Kreationen von ausgewählten Weinen aus Goriška Brda, einer der renommiertesten Weinregionen Sloweniens – eine Kombination, die die Vielfalt der slowenischen Genusslandschaft eindrucksvoll widerspiegelte.

Kultur, die verbindet

Für die musikalische Atmosphäre sorgten Severa und Gal Gjurin mit ihrer Interpretation slowenischer Volks- und Ethnomusik. Traditionelle Klänge und zeitgenössische Elemente verliehen dem Abend eine zusätzliche kulturelle Dimension.

So wurde der Slowenien-Abend zu weit mehr als einer touristischen Präsentation. Gastronomie, Wein, Musik und persönliche Begegnungen zeichneten gemeinsam ein authentisches Bild des Landes und machten zugleich sichtbar, was Österreich und Slowenien verbindet.

In der besonderen Atmosphäre des Weltmuseums zeigte sich schließlich eine der stärksten Visitenkarten Sloweniens: Gastfreundschaft, die nicht nur präsentiert, sondern gelebt wird.
