Registration plates, the “Pickerl” inspection, a driving licence and mandatory helmets are among the key changes

Users of e-scooters and e-mopeds in Austria are facing important regulatory changes. As of 1 September 2026, Wiener Linien introduced new rules governing the transport of e-scooters on Vienna’s public transport network. From 1 October, new regulations will also come into force for certain categories of e-mopeds, introducing mandatory registration, insurance, an appropriate driving licence and helmet use.

Electric scooters and mopeds have become an increasingly visible part of the urban mobility landscape in Austria and across European cities in recent years. Fast, practical and relatively inexpensive to operate, they offer users an efficient way to avoid crowded public transport and lengthy traffic jams during peak hours.

Their growing popularity, however, has also created new challenges. Pedestrians, cyclists and motorists increasingly share urban space with users of electric vehicles who may move between cycle lanes, roads and other traffic areas, sometimes creating unpredictable and potentially dangerous situations.

Against this backdrop, regulations governing these forms of mobility are becoming stricter.

New Rules for E-Scooters in Vienna from 1 September

The first major change took effect on 1 September 2026 and concerns the transport of e-scooters on vehicles operated by Wiener Linien, Vienna’s public transport operator.

E-scooters are now subject to the same transport rules as bicycles, including e-bikes.

In practical terms, this means that e-scooters are no longer permitted on Wiener Linien buses and trams, while they may only be taken onto the U-Bahn at specified times outside peak hours.

When Can E-Scooters Be Taken on the U-Bahn?

As of 1 September, e-scooters may be transported on the U-Bahn during the following periods:

• Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm
• Monday to Friday, from 6:30 pm until the end of service
• Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, all day

E-scooters may not be taken onto the U-Bahn during peak hours.

Folding the E-Scooter Does Not Change the Rule

An important provision also applies to foldable electric scooters.

Since 1 September, e-scooters have not been permitted on Wiener Linien buses or trams even when folded.

Under Wiener Linien’s transport regulations, folded e-scooters are not classified as hand luggage.

Different rules apply to conventional, non-electric scooters. As these take up significantly less space when folded, they may continue to be transported on all Wiener Linien vehicles at any time.

Violations Carry a €50 Fine

Passengers who fail to comply with the new transport rules may face a €50 fine.

This applies, for example, to passengers who take an e-scooter onto a tram or transport one on the U-Bahn during periods when e-scooters are not permitted.

There is another important safety rule users should be aware of.

Bicycles and e-scooters may only be pushed within Wiener Linien facilities and premises.

For safety reasons, the use of escalators while carrying or accompanying bicycles or e-scooters is also prohibited.

Major Changes from 1 October: New Rules for E-Mopeds

While the September changes primarily concern e-scooters on Vienna’s public transport network, significant changes for owners of certain categories of e-mopeds will come into force on 1 October 2026.

These vehicles will no longer be permitted to use cycle paths or cycle lanes.

This, however, is only one element of the new regulatory framework.

Registration and Insurance Become Mandatory

“Many e-moped owners are still unaware that from 1 October 2026 they will have to insure and register their vehicles. Anyone riding without a registration plate after that date will have to face the legal consequences,” warns Barbara Heis of Tiroler Versicherung.

Until now, e-mopeds covered by the change have effectively been classified in a manner similar to bicycles. Their legal status will now change.

From 1 October, certain e-mopeds will be classified as motor vehicles, meaning that they will be subject to regulations comparable to those applying to conventional mopeds with internal combustion engines.

The change applies to defined categories of e-mopeds, including Class L1e-B vehicles with a maximum speed of 25 km/h and a motor drive without pedal assistance.

These vehicles will require motor vehicle liability insurance and registration.

Registration Plates, “Pickerl”, Driving Licence and Mandatory Helmet

Following registration, owners will receive a registration plate, while their vehicles will also be subject to periodic roadworthiness inspections under Section 57a (§57a-Begutachtung), commonly known in Austria as the “Pickerl”.

In addition to mandatory insurance and registration, an appropriate driving licence will also be required from 1 October.

The use of a suitable protective helmet will also become mandatory.

Barbara Heis believes the new regulatory framework will contribute to improving safety on Austrian roads.

“The new regulation certainly makes sense and will increase the safety of all road users. In particular, the combination of training, mandatory helmet use and liability insurance strengthens protection in road traffic,” Heis says.

ÖAMTC Warns of Potentially High Penalties

ÖAMTC (Austrian Automobile, Motorcycle and Touring Club) has also drawn attention to the changes, reminding vehicle owners that failure to comply with the new regulations may result in significant penalties.

Financial penalties are not the only potential consequence.

In the event of an accident, the owner of an unregistered or uninsured vehicle could also face recourse claims from the insurance association.

Barbara Heis therefore advises owners affected by the new rules to arrange registration and insurance in good time.

No Need to Wait Until 1 October – Registration Is Already Possible

Owners of e-mopeds covered by the new regulations do not need to wait until the final deadline.

The vehicles can already be registered and insured.

The procedure requires vehicle documentation, proof of ownership and a valid photo ID.

Two Dates E-Scooter and E-Moped Users Should Remember

Two dates are particularly important for users of electric scooters and e-mopeds in Austria:

1 SEPTEMBER 2026 – Wiener Linien’s new rules governing the transport of e-scooters came into effect. E-scooters are no longer permitted on buses and trams, while they may only be taken onto the U-Bahn during specified periods. Violations of the transport regulations may result in a €50 fine.

1 OCTOBER 2026 – New regulations for certain categories of e-mopeds come into force. Das große internationale Interesse an Christopher Nolans Film „The Odyssey“ könnte sich für den griechischen Tourismus als wertvoller Impuls erweisen. Doch eine Marketingidee sorgt bereits für deutlichen Widerstand: Die Gemeinde Ithaka hat den Vorschlag zurückgewiesen, die Ionischen Inseln zu Werbezwecken gemeinsam als „Odysseus-Inseln“ zu vermarkten. Geschichte und Identität der legendären Heimat des homerischen Helden dürften nicht zu einer allgemeinen Tourismusmarke für eine ganze Region werden, lautet die klare Botschaft von der Insel.

Den Vorschlag brachte Savvas Koulouris, stellvertretender Regionalgouverneur für Finanzen und Handel, bei einer Sitzung des Regionalrats am Samstag, dem 22. August, ein, wie Greekreporter berichtet.

Die Initiative ist Teil der Vorbereitungen für den Auftritt der Ionischen Inseln auf dem World Travel Market (WTM), einer der bedeutendsten internationalen Fachveranstaltungen der Tourismusbranche, die im November in London stattfindet.

Auf Ithaka, jener Insel, die seit Jahrtausenden untrennbar mit Homers Odysseus verbunden ist, stieß der Plan allerdings auf eine unmissverständliche Reaktion.

„Ithaka ist Ithaka. Odysseus hat seine Heimat, und sie kann nicht in eine allgemeine Tourismusmarke der Ionischen Inseln verwandelt werden“, erklärte die Gemeinde Ithaka.

Von Korfu bis Zakynthos: Die sieben großen Ionischen Inseln

Die Ionischen Inseln (Ionian Islands) liegen im Ionischen Meer vor der Westküste Griechenlands. Traditionell sind sie auch unter der Bezeichnung Eptanisa bekannt – wörtlich „Sieben Inseln“.

Zu dieser Inselgruppe gehören Corfu (Korfu), Paxos, Lefkada, Ithaca (Ithaka), Kefalonia, Zakynthos und Kythira, wobei Kythira geografisch deutlich weiter südlich als der Kern des Ionischen Archipels liegt. Zum Archipel zählen darüber hinaus zahlreiche kleinere Inseln und Eilande.

Jede der sieben Hauptinseln verfügt über ein ausgeprägtes historisches, kulturelles und touristisches Profil – ein Umstand, der in der aktuellen Debatte um eine gemeinsame Dachmarke eine entscheidende Rolle spielt.

Nolans „The Odyssey“ als Chance für den Tourismus

Auslöser der neuen Marketingidee ist die enorme Aufmerksamkeit, die Christopher Nolans „The Odyssey“ auf sich zieht. Der Film des US-amerikanischen Regisseurs basiert auf Homers weltberühmtem Epos und rückt damit auch jene Landschaften und Mythen ins internationale Blickfeld, die seit der Antike mit Odysseus verbunden werden.

Die Tourismusverantwortlichen der Ionischen Inseln sehen in diesem weltweiten Interesse offenbar die Chance, die gesamte Region stärker auf dem internationalen Reisemarkt zu positionieren.

Savvas Koulouris erklärte auf der jüngsten Sitzung des Regionalrats, der Gouverneur der Ionischen Inseln, Yannis Trepeklis, ehemaliger Bürgermeister von Korfu, bereite für den Auftritt der Region auf dem World Travel Market 2026 eine Art „Überraschung“ vor.

Diese „Überraschung“ soll darin bestehen, die Ionischen Inseln unter einem gemeinsamen und international leicht vermittelbaren Namen zu präsentieren: als „Odysseus-Inseln“.

„Da der Film des amerikanischen Regisseurs Christopher Nolan, ‚The Odyssey‘, derzeit im Mittelpunkt der Aufmerksamkeit steht, wird es auf dem WTM eine besondere Veranstaltung geben, bei der die Ionischen Inseln als ‚Odysseus-Inseln‘ präsentiert werden. Ziel ist es, daraus eine starke Marke zu machen, denn obwohl jede Insel natürlich ihre eigenen Besonderheiten hat, wollen wir derzeit eine Marke schaffen, die alle Ionischen Inseln umfasst“, betonte Koulouris.

Aus Ithaka kommt ein entschiedenes Nein

Was von den Regionalbehörden als wirkungsvoller Marketingansatz gedacht ist, wird auf Ithaka als eine Frage verstanden, die unmittelbar die Geschichte und Identität der Insel berührt.

Die Gemeinde machte deutlich, dass sie eine internationale touristische Vermarktung der Ionischen Inseln grundsätzlich unterstützt. Die Verwendung des Namens Odysseus als gemeinsame Dachmarke für sämtliche Inseln der Region lehnt sie jedoch ab.

„Obwohl wir die Öffnung zur Welt und die touristische Förderung der Ionischen Inseln unterstützen, kann die Gemeinde Ithaka den Vorschlag, die Ionischen Inseln ‚Odysseus-Inseln‘ zu nennen, nicht akzeptieren“, heißt es in der Erklärung.

Aus Sicht der Gemeinde geht es dabei um weit mehr als eine Frage des Marketings. Odysseus ist über Literatur, Geschichte und Überlieferung seit Jahrhunderten unmittelbar mit Ithaka verbunden – und damit Bestandteil einer Identität, die die Insel als ihr eigenes kulturelles Erbe versteht.

„Andere können nicht ohne Ithaka entscheiden“

Ithaka gilt weltweit als Heimat des Odysseus, des Helden aus Homers „Odyssee“. Seine Heimkehr nach dem Trojanischen Krieg und die jahrelange Irrfahrt auf dem Weg zurück zu seiner Insel gehören zu den bekanntesten Erzählungen der europäischen Literatur- und Kulturgeschichte.

Für die örtlichen Behörden folgt daraus, dass über die touristische Nutzung des Namens Odysseus nicht entschieden werden könne, ohne Ithaka selbst einzubeziehen.

„Wenn es um eine so ernste Frage geht, die die Geschichte, die Identität und die internationale Marke Ithakas betrifft, können andere nicht ohne Ithaka entscheiden“, heißt es weiter.

Die Gemeinde forderte den Regionalrat der Ionischen Inseln deshalb auf, „Ithaka, seine Geschichte und seine einzigartige Beziehung zu Odysseus zu respektieren“.

Ein Name, sieben Inseln – und die Frage nach der Identität

Auf den ersten Blick folgt die Idee der „Odysseus-Inseln“ einer nachvollziehbaren touristischen Logik: Die weltweite Aufmerksamkeit rund um Nolans Film soll genutzt werden, um eine international verständliche und leicht wiedererkennbare Marke für die Region zu schaffen.

Doch genau an diesem Punkt beginnt der Konflikt.

Die Ionischen Inseln bilden einen Archipel mit unterschiedlichen historischen Erfahrungen, kulturellen Traditionen und touristischen Profilen. Ithaka wiederum betrachtet seine Verbindung zu Odysseus als einzigartig und untrennbar mit dem eigenen Namen und seiner jahrtausendealten Überlieferung verbunden.

Die Gemeinde wendet sich daher nicht gegen eine gemeinsame internationale Vermarktung der Region. Ihr Widerstand richtet sich vielmehr gegen den Versuch, Odysseus zu einer touristischen Dachmarke für sämtliche Ionischen Inseln zu machen.

Nach Auffassung der Verantwortlichen auf Ithaka verfügt die Region über genügend andere Qualitäten, auf denen eine gemeinsame touristische Strategie aufbauen kann: die außergewöhnliche Landschaft, das Ionische Meer, Geschichte und Architektur, lokale Küche und Traditionen sowie die individuellen Besonderheiten jeder einzelnen Insel.

„Ithaka gibt seine Geschichte und seinen Namen nicht preis“

In ihrer abschließenden Stellungnahme lässt die Gemeinde wenig Raum für Interpretationen.

Eine stärkere touristische Präsenz der gesamten Region auf internationaler Ebene sei durchaus wünschenswert. Sie dürfe jedoch nicht auf Kosten einer historischen Identität erfolgen, die Ithaka seit Jahrhunderten weltweit unverwechselbar macht.

„Die touristische Förderung der Ionischen Inseln kann und sollte auf ihren vielen unterschiedlichen Vorzügen beruhen. Ithaka gibt seine Geschichte und seinen Namen nicht preis“, heißt es abschließend in der Erklärung.

RIDING THE WAVE OF “THE ODYSSEY”: Ithaca Rejects Proposal to Rebrand the Ionian Islands as the “Islands of Odysseus”

The intense international interest surrounding Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” could prove a valuable asset for Greek tourism. Yet one attempt to harness that attention has already met with firm resistance. The Municipality of Ithaca has rejected a proposal to promote the Ionian Islands collectively as the “Islands of Odysseus,” arguing that the history and identity of the legendary homeland of Homer’s hero cannot simply be transformed into a tourism brand for an entire region.

The proposal was put forward by Savvas Koulouris, Deputy Regional Governor for Finance and Trade, during a meeting of the Regional Council on Saturday, August 22, according to Greekreporter.

The initiative forms part of preparations for the Ionian Islands’ appearance at the World Travel Market (WTM), one of the international tourism industry’s leading events, which will take place in London in November.

On Ithaca, however — an island whose name has been inseparable from Homer’s Odysseus for millennia — the proposal was met with an unequivocal response.

“Ithaca is Ithaca. Odysseus has his homeland, and it cannot be turned into a general tourism brand for the Ionian Islands,” the Municipality of Ithaca stated.

From Corfu to Zakynthos: The Seven Great Ionian Islands

The Ionian Islands lie in the Ionian Sea, off the western coast of Greece. Traditionally, they are also known as the Eptanisa, literally meaning the “Seven Islands.”

The group comprises Corfu, Paxos, Lefkada, Ithaca, Kefalonia, Zakynthos and Kythira, although Kythira lies considerably farther south than the main body of the Ionian archipelago. Numerous smaller islands and islets also form part of the wider island group.

Each of the seven principal islands possesses a distinct historical, cultural and touristic identity — a distinction that lies at the heart of the current debate over whether they should be placed beneath a single cultural and promotional umbrella.

Nolan’s “The Odyssey” as a Tourism Opportunity

The immediate catalyst for the new branding proposal is the extraordinary attention surrounding Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey.” Based on Homer’s timeless epic, the film has brought renewed international attention not only to the story of Odysseus but also to the landscapes, myths and places associated with his journey since antiquity.

Tourism officials in the Ionian Islands appear to see this global fascination as an opportunity to strengthen the region’s profile on the international travel market.

At the latest meeting of the Regional Council, Savvas Koulouris said that the Governor of the Ionian Islands, Yannis Trepeklis, a former mayor of Corfu, was preparing a kind of “surprise” for the region’s presentation at the World Travel Market 2026.

That “surprise” would be the presentation of the Ionian Islands under a single, internationally recognisable name: the “Islands of Odysseus.”

“Since the film ‘The Odyssey’ by American director Christopher Nolan is currently in the spotlight, a special event will be held at WTM where the Ionian Islands will be presented as the ‘Islands of Odysseus.’ The aim is to establish a strong brand because, although each island naturally has its own distinctive character, at this moment we want a brand that encompasses all the Ionian Islands,” Koulouris said.

An Unequivocal No from Ithaca

What regional officials envisioned as an effective exercise in destination branding has been interpreted on Ithaca as something considerably more consequential: a question that touches directly upon the island’s history and identity.

The Municipality of Ithaca has made clear that it supports the international promotion of the Ionian Islands as a whole. What it rejects is the use of Odysseus as a common umbrella brand for every island in the region.

“Although we support openness to the world and the tourism promotion of the Ionian Islands, the Municipality of Ithaca cannot accept the proposal to call the Ionian Islands the ‘Islands of Odysseus,’” the statement reads.

From the municipality’s perspective, this is about far more than marketing. Through literature, history and cultural memory, Odysseus has been intimately associated with Ithaca for centuries. That association, the island argues, is not merely a useful promotional motif but part of its own cultural inheritance.

“Others Cannot Decide Without Ithaca”

Ithaca is known throughout the world as the homeland of Odysseus, the hero of Homer’s “Odyssey.” His return after the Trojan War — and the long years of wandering and trials that precede his arrival home — form one of the foundational narratives of European literary and cultural history.

For the local authorities, it follows that decisions concerning the use of Odysseus’ name as a tourism brand cannot be taken without Ithaca itself having a voice.

“When it comes to such a serious matter, concerning the history, identity and international brand of Ithaca, others cannot decide without Ithaca,” the statement continues.

The municipality therefore called on the Regional Council of the Ionian Islands “to respect Ithaca, its history and its unique relationship with Odysseus.”

One Name, Seven Islands — and a Question of Identity

At first glance, the idea of the “Islands of Odysseus” follows an understandable logic. The unprecedented international attention surrounding Nolan’s film offers tourism authorities a rare opportunity to create a memorable and readily recognisable identity for the region.

Yet this is precisely where tourism strategy encounters the more complex terrain of cultural heritage.

The Ionian Islands form an archipelago shaped by different histories, traditions and cultural identities. Each has developed its own character and international image. Ithaca, meanwhile, regards its relationship with Odysseus as singular — inseparable from both the island’s name and a cultural tradition stretching back thousands of years.

The municipality is therefore not objecting to the joint international promotion of the Ionian Islands. Its objection is to the attempt to turn Odysseus into an overarching marketing symbol for the entire archipelago.

In Ithaca’s view, the Ionian Islands possess more than enough qualities on which to build a shared tourism strategy: their remarkable landscapes and the luminous waters of the Ionian Sea, their history and architecture, local cuisine and traditions, and the distinctive character of each individual island.

The dispute therefore raises a broader question that extends beyond tourism: where does the promotion of cultural heritage end, and the appropriation of a particular place’s identity begin?

“Ithaca Will Not Give Away Its History or Its Name”

In its concluding remarks, the Municipality of Ithaca left little room for ambiguity.

A stronger international presence for the Ionian Islands is both welcome and desirable, it maintains. But such promotion should not come at the expense of a historical identity that has made Ithaca recognisable throughout the world for centuries — and whose roots reach back to one of the defining works of Western literature.

“The tourism promotion of the Ionian Islands can and should be based on their many and varied strengths. Ithaca will not give away its history or its name,” the municipality concluded.

Unter den Gästen befanden sich zudem zahlreiche prominente Vertreter der türkischen Gemeinschaft in Wien.

Zu Beginn der Veranstaltung wurde eine anlässlich des Tages der Streitkräfte übermittelte Botschaft des türkischen Staatspräsidenten Recep Tayyip Erdoğan verlesen. Im Anschluss richteten Botschafter Dr. Gürsel Dönmez und Militärattaché Oberst Murat Doğusoy ihre Grußworte an die zahlreich erschienenen Gäste und würdigten die besondere Bedeutung dieses Tages.

VIENNA – On the occasion of the Day of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Türkiye, traditionally observed on 30 August, the Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Austria, H.E. Dr. Gürsel Dönmez, and the Military Attaché, Colonel Murat Doğusoy, hosted a ceremonial reception in Vienna.

The reception, held on Monday, 31 August, at the premises of the Turkish Embassy, brought together numerous members of the military and diplomatic corps, representatives of Austrian state institutions, as well as figures from public and social life. The guests also included a number of prominent representatives of the Turkish community in Vienna.

At the beginning of the event, a message from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, delivered on the occasion of the Day of the Armed Forces, was read aloud. This was followed by welcoming remarks from Ambassador Dr. Gürsel Dönmez and Military Attaché Colonel Murat Doğusoy, who addressed the many guests in attendance and highlighted the special significance of the occasion.

The celebrations held on 30 August occupy a particularly important place in the Republic of Türkiye. The day commemorates the decisive victory in the Battle of Dumlupınar in 1922, which marked a crucial turning point in the Turkish War of Independence.

Known as “Zafer Bayramı” – Victory Day, 30 August is one of the most important national commemorative days and public holidays in the Republic of Türkiye. At the same time, the day is dedicated to the Turkish Armed Forces and serves as a remembrance of the historic events that paved the way for the establishment of the modern Republic of Türkiye.

2026 geht die VIENNA FASHION WEEK bereits in ihre 18. Ausgabe – und bleibt damit ein fester Termin im Wiener Modekalender. Etablierte Designer:innen treffen auf vielversprechende Newcomer, internationale Labels auf lokale Talente, tragbare Entwürfe auf experimentelle Statements.

Im Mittelpunkt stehen die neuesten Kollektionen, aktuelle Tendenzen und vor allem jene kreativen Handschriften, die Mode nicht nur als Kleidung, sondern als Ausdruck von Persönlichkeit, Zeitgeist und kultureller Veränderung verstehen.

Sechs Tage im Zeichen des Designs

Das MuseumsQuartier wird während der Fashion Week zur Bühne für Runway Shows, Präsentationen und Fashion Events. Doch die VIENNA FASHION WEEK versteht sich längst nicht mehr ausschließlich als klassische Schauenwoche. Shopping Areas und Pop-up-Stores bringen die Kollektionen näher ans Publikum, während Gespräche und Programmpunkte rund um Sustainability und die Zukunft der Mode Raum für Austausch schaffen.

So entsteht eine Atmosphäre, in der sich Laufsteg und urbanes Leben, Business und Kreativität, etablierte Namen und neue Perspektiven miteinander verbinden.

Opening Night: Fashion trifft Eyewear

Den Auftakt setzt die VIENNA FASHION WEEK.26 Opening Show hosted by FR!TZ EYEWEAR. Die Opening Show eröffnet eine Woche, in der Mode wieder zur Inszenierung wird – mit neuen Silhouetten, überraschenden Details und individuellen Designpositionen.

Der Abend gibt den Ton für die kommenden Tage vor: selbstbewusst, international und mit jener unverwechselbaren Wiener Mischung aus Eleganz, Avantgarde und Nonchalance.

Bühne frei für die nächste Generation

Weiße Häuser, leuchtend blaue Türen und Fensterläden, pinke Bougainvilleen und dahinter das tiefblaue Meer: Dieses Bild verbinden Millionen Menschen mit einem Urlaub in Griechenland. Doch haben Sie sich schon einmal gefragt, warum ausgerechnet Blau und Weiß die griechischen Inseln prägen? Die Antwort ist überraschend – denn ursprünglich ging es keineswegs nur um Schönheit.

Ein Blick auf ein weißes Häuschen mit leuchtend blauer Tür genügt – und schon sind die Gedanken irgendwo zwischen Sonne, Meer und einer kleinen Taverne auf einer griechischen Insel.

Kaum eine Farbkombination steht so sehr für den Sommer in Griechenland wie Blau und Weiß. Vor allem auf den Kykladen gehören weiß getünchte Häuser, blaue Türen und Fensterläden, verwinkelte Steingassen und üppige Bougainvilleen zum typischen Bild.

Was heute wie die perfekte Kulisse für Instagram und Urlaubsfotos aussieht, hat allerdings eine viel längere Geschichte.

Denn hinter dem berühmten Griechenland-Look stecken nicht nur Ästhetik und Tradition, sondern auch erstaunlich praktische Gründe.

Darum sind die Häuser in Griechenland so oft strahlend weiß

Die Erklärung ist eigentlich ganz einfach: Weiß ist ideal für heiße Regionen.

Während dunkle Oberflächen viel Sonnenenergie aufnehmen, reflektieren helle Fassaden einen großen Teil der Sonnenstrahlung. Dadurch können sich Gebäude weniger stark aufheizen – ein entscheidender Vorteil während eines heißen griechischen Sommers.

Besonders wichtig war das natürlich in einer Zeit, in der es noch keine Klimaanlagen gab.

Die Bewohner der Inseln mussten andere Möglichkeiten finden, um ihre Häuser während der heißesten Monate möglichst angenehm zu halten.

Dafür wurden die Fassaden traditionell gekalkt. Kalk war günstig, vergleichsweise einfach zu verwenden und verlieh den Häusern gleichzeitig ihr charakteristisches sauberes, strahlendes Aussehen. Zudem wurde Kalk traditionell auch wegen seiner hygienischen Eigenschaften geschätzt.

Das berühmte Weiß der griechischen Inselhäuser war also keineswegs nur eine Frage des Geschmacks.

Und warum sind Türen und Fenster ausgerechnet blau?

Genau hier wird es spannend.

Auf vielen griechischen Inseln, insbesondere auf den Kykladen, war Blau eine vergleichsweise praktische und erschwingliche Möglichkeit, Türen, Fenster und Fensterläden zu streichen.

Der typische Blauton wird unter anderem mit dem traditionellen Mittel „Loulaki“ in Verbindung gebracht.

Die Inselbewohner verwendeten Materialien, die verfügbar und bezahlbar waren. Aus einer pragmatischen Entscheidung entwickelte sich so nach und nach einer der bekanntesten Looks des gesamten Mittelmeerraums.

Heute wirkt die Farbkombination geradezu perfekt inszeniert: Das Blau der Türen und Fensterläden scheint mit dem Meer und dem klaren Himmel zu verschmelzen, während die weißen Fassaden im Sonnenlicht leuchten.

Doch hinter der Farbe Blau steckt noch mehr

Blau hat in Griechenland längst auch eine symbolische Bedeutung.

Die Farbe wird mit dem Meer und dem Himmel, aber auch mit Ruhe und Harmonie verbunden. In volkstümlichen Vorstellungen können bestimmte Blautöne außerdem eine schützende Bedeutung haben.

Und dann wäre da natürlich noch die griechische Flagge.

Blau und Weiß sind ihre dominierenden Farben und eng mit der Identität des Landes verbunden. So wurde die Kombination im Laufe der Zeit zu weit mehr als einer beliebten Farbwahl für Häuser.

Sie wurde zu einem Symbol Griechenlands.

Diese Bilder machen sofort Lust auf Griechenland

Weiße Mauern, leuchtend blaue Fensterläden, pinkfarbene Bougainvilleen und irgendwo zwischen den Häusern ein Blick auf die Ägäis – kaum eine Urlaubskulisse ist so unverwechselbar.

Kein Wunder also, dass die blau-weißen Häuser heute zu den beliebtesten Fotomotiven Griechenlands gehören.

Überraschend: Nicht überall in Griechenland sind die Häuser blau-weiß

Wer Griechenland etwas besser kennt, weiß allerdings: Der berühmte blau-weiße Stil ist keineswegs überall im Land zu finden.

Besonders typisch ist er für die Kykladen. In anderen Regionen Griechenlands kann die traditionelle Architektur ganz anders aussehen.

Dort findet man beispielsweise Häuser aus Naturstein, Fassaden in warmen Erd- und Naturtönen sowie Fensterläden und Türen in Grün, Braun, Rot oder anderen Farben.

Trotzdem wurde gerade die Kombination aus Blau und Weiß im Laufe des 20. Jahrhunderts zu einem der bekanntesten Symbole des griechischen Tourismus.

Der Look ist heute so eng mit Sonne, Meer und griechischem Inselurlaub verbunden, dass die traditionelle Ästhetik vielerorts bewusst erhalten und sogar bei neueren Gebäuden aufgegriffen wird.

Was wie Dekoration aussieht, erzählt eine jahrhundertealte Geschichte

Heute gehören weiße Häuser mit blauen Türen zu Griechenland wie Sonne, Oliven und das tiefblaue Meer.

Doch was für Urlauber vor allem romantisch und wunderschön aussieht, entstand nicht allein aus ästhetischen Gründen.

Klima, verfügbare Materialien, praktische Bedürfnisse und lokale Traditionen haben gemeinsam einen Stil geschaffen, der heute auf der ganzen Welt wiedererkannt wird.

Whitewashed houses, bright blue doors and shutters, pink bougainvillea and the deep blue sea in the background — it’s a picture millions of people instantly associate with a Greek island holiday. But have you ever wondered why blue and white became such iconic colors in Greece? The answer is more interesting than you might think — because it was never just about creating a beautiful view.

Sometimes, all it takes is one picture of a tiny white house with a vivid blue door to make you want to pack your bags and head straight to Greece.

Few color combinations capture the feeling of a Greek summer quite like blue and white. On the Cyclades in particular, whitewashed houses, blue doors and window shutters, narrow stone-paved alleys and cascades of colorful bougainvillea have become part of the unmistakable island landscape.

Today, it may look like the perfect backdrop for Instagram posts and holiday photos, but the story behind Greece’s famous blue-and-white houses goes back much further.

And behind this iconic look are not only beauty and tradition, but some surprisingly practical reasons as well.

Why are so many houses in Greece painted white?

The explanation is actually quite simple: white is an excellent choice for a hot climate.

While dark surfaces absorb more of the sun’s energy, light-colored walls reflect a significant amount of sunlight. This helps prevent buildings from heating up as quickly — an important advantage during Greece’s scorching summers.

This was particularly valuable long before air conditioning became part of everyday life.

Island residents had to find simple and effective ways to keep their homes more comfortable during the hottest months of the year.

Traditionally, many houses were whitewashed with lime. Lime was affordable, relatively easy to use and gave homes their characteristic clean, bright appearance. It was also traditionally valued for its hygienic properties.

So the brilliant white that looks so beautiful under the Mediterranean sun wasn’t simply a matter of taste — it served a very practical purpose.

So why are the doors and windows blue?

This is where the story gets even more interesting.

On many Greek islands, particularly in the Cyclades, blue was a relatively practical and affordable choice for painting wooden elements such as doors, windows and shutters.

The characteristic shade is often associated with a traditional blue coloring agent known as “loulaki.”

Islanders used materials that were readily available and affordable. Over time, what began as a practical choice helped create one of the most recognizable architectural looks in the Mediterranean.

Today, the combination seems almost perfectly designed: blue doors and shutters appear to blend into the colors of the Aegean Sea and the clear summer sky, while brilliant white walls glow in the sunshine.

But the color blue means something more

Over time, blue has also taken on a deeper symbolic meaning in Greece.

The color is naturally associated with the sea and sky, as well as feelings of calm and harmony. In traditional folk beliefs, certain shades of blue can also carry protective symbolism.

And then, of course, there is another obvious connection — the Greek flag.

Blue and white are its dominant colors and are deeply associated with the country’s national identity. Over the years, the combination became much more than a popular color scheme for island homes.

It became a symbol of Greece itself.

White walls, vivid blue shutters, bright pink bougainvillea and a glimpse of the Aegean Sea between the houses — few holiday scenes are quite as instantly recognizable.

It’s no surprise that Greece’s blue-and-white houses have become some of the most photographed sights on the islands.

Surprisingly, not every house in Greece is blue and white

Anyone who has traveled beyond Greece’s most famous island destinations may already know that the iconic blue-and-white look isn’t found everywhere in the country.

It is particularly associated with the Cyclades. In other parts of Greece, traditional architecture can look very different.

Depending on the region, you may find natural stone houses, facades in warm earthy shades and doors or shutters painted green, brown, red or other colors.

Still, during the 20th century, blue and white became one of the most recognizable visual symbols of Greek tourism.

Today, the look is so closely associated with sunshine, the sea and Greek island holidays that the traditional aesthetic is carefully preserved in many places — and is sometimes incorporated into newer buildings as well.

What looks like decoration actually tells a much older story

Today, white houses with blue doors seem as inseparable from Greece as sunshine, olives and the deep blue sea.

But what visitors now see as a romantic and picture-perfect holiday setting didn’t develop purely for aesthetic reasons.

The Mediterranean climate, locally available materials, practical everyday needs and generations of tradition all played a role in creating a style that is now recognized around the world.

So the next time you wander through the narrow streets of a Greek island and stop to photograph a brilliant white house with striking blue shutters, remember: those colors are much more than a beautiful holiday backdrop — they tell a small but fascinating part of Greece’s story.

Während ihrer Amtszeit in Wien setzte sich Botschafterin Vermeulen mit großem Engagement für die Pflege und Weiterentwicklung der bilateralen Beziehungen zwischen Belgien und Österreich sowie für einen kontinuierlichen, konstruktiven und vertrauensvollen diplomatischen Dialog ein.

Nach Abschluss ihres Mandats in der österreichischen Bundeshauptstadt führt ihr diplomatischer Weg nun in den Vatikan. Dort wird Caroline Marie Therese Vermeulen ihre diplomatische Tätigkeit als Vertreterin Belgiens beim Heiligen Stuhl fortsetzen und damit ein neues Kapitel ihrer diplomatischen Laufbahn beginnen.

Since 10 August 2022, H.E. Caroline Marie Therese Vermeulen has served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Belgium to the Republic of Austria.

During her tenure in Vienna, Ambassador Vermeulen demonstrated great commitment to strengthening and further developing bilateral relations between Belgium and Austria, while fostering a continuous, constructive and trust-based diplomatic dialogue.

Following the completion of her mandate in the Austrian capital, her diplomatic journey now takes her to the Vatican. There, Caroline Marie Therese Vermeulen will continue her diplomatic service as Belgium’s representative to the Holy See, marking the beginning of a new chapter in her distinguished diplomatic career.

Appreciation and Best Wishes

Die Festveranstaltung fand im eleganten Festsaal des Park Hyatt Vienna statt und brachte zahlreiche hochrangige Vertreterinnen und Vertreter des diplomatischen Korps, Persönlichkeiten aus Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft sowie namhafte Mitglieder der marokkanischen Gemeinschaft in Österreich zusammen.

Im Rahmen des offiziellen Teils richteten S.E. Botschafter Azzeddine Farhane sowie S.E. Botschafter Maximilian Hennig, Protokollchef des österreichischen Außenministeriums, Grußworte an die anwesenden Gäste.

Im Anschluss erfolgte das feierliche Anschneiden der Jubiläumstorte – ein symbolischer Höhepunkt des Abends und zugleich Ausdruck der traditionell ausgezeichneten und freundschaftlichen Beziehungen zwischen dem Königreich Marokko und der Republik Österreich.

Nach Abschluss des offiziellen Programms waren die Gäste zu einem festlichen Empfang geladen.

Ein besonderer Akzent des Abends lag auf der reichen kulinarischen und kulturellen Tradition Marokkos. Die Gäste wurden auf eine genussvolle gastronomische Reise durch das Königreich mitgenommen und hatten darüber hinaus Gelegenheit, die traditionsreiche marokkanische Teezeremonie aus nächster Nähe zu erleben.

27th Anniversary of the Enthronement of His Majesty King Mohammed VI of Morocco 

On the occasion of the 27th anniversary of the accession to the throne of His Majesty King Mohammed VI of Morocco, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco to the Republic of Austria, H.E. Azzeddine Farhane, and Mrs. Amina Idrissi Belkasmi hosted a ceremonial reception in Vienna on Thursday, 30 July.

The celebration took place in the elegant ballroom of the Park Hyatt Vienna and brought together numerous high-ranking representatives of the diplomatic corps, distinguished figures from the worlds of business and society, as well as prominent members of the Moroccan community in Austria.

During the official part of the ceremony, H.E. Ambassador Azzeddine Farhane and H.E. Ambassador Maximilian Hennig, Chief of Protocol at the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, delivered welcoming remarks to the distinguished guests.

The speeches were followed by the ceremonial cutting of the anniversary cake – a symbolic highlight of the evening and an expression of the traditionally excellent and friendly relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Austria.

Following the conclusion of the official programme, guests were invited to a festive reception.

A special highlight of the evening was the celebration of Morocco’s rich culinary and cultural heritage. Guests were taken on a delightful gastronomic journey through the Kingdom and were also given the opportunity to experience the traditional Moroccan tea ceremony at close quarters.

Feierlicher Empfang anlässlich des 70-jährigen Jubiläums

Anlässlich des 70-jährigen Bestehens der diplomatischen Beziehungen zwischen der Republik Sudan und der Republik Österreich sowie zur Verabschiedung von S.E. Herrn Magdi Ahmed Mofadal Elnour, Botschafter und Ständiger Vertreter der Republik Sudan, lud die Botschaft der Republik Sudan zu einem feierlichen Empfang ein.

Die Veranstaltung fand am 29. Juli im Festsaal der Diplomatischen Akademie Wien statt und bot einen würdigen Rahmen, um sieben Jahrzehnte diplomatischer Beziehungen zwischen Sudan und Österreich zu würdigen.

In seiner Ansprache betonte Botschafter Magdi Ahmed Mofadal Elnour die besondere Bedeutung guter und beständiger diplomatischer Beziehungen zwischen beiden Ländern und hob den Wert des gegenseitigen Respekts, des Dialogs und der Zusammenarbeit hervor.

Die Bedeutung der langjährigen bilateralen Beziehungen wurde auch von Gesandtem Christoph Meyenburg vom Protokoll des Bundesministeriums für europäische und internationale Angelegenheiten (BMEIA) sowie von Werner Fasslabend, ehemaligem österreichischen Bundesminister für Landesverteidigung (1990–2000), in ihren Ansprachen hervorgehoben.

Das Jubiläum bot damit nicht nur Gelegenheit, auf sieben Jahrzehnte diplomatischer Beziehungen zurückzublicken, sondern auch die Bedeutung eines kontinuierlichen und konstruktiven Austauschs zwischen Österreich und Sudan für die Zukunft zu unterstreichen.

Abschied von S.E. Herrn Magdi Ahmed Mofadal Elnour

Der Empfang stand jedoch nicht nur im Zeichen des 70-jährigen Jubiläums der sudanesisch-österreichischen diplomatischen Beziehungen, sondern war zugleich dem Abschied von Botschafter Magdi Ahmed Mofadal Elnour gewidmet.

Diplomatischer Dienst in Wien

Seit dem 28. Juli 2022 ist Magdi Ahmed Mofadal Elnour als Außerordentlicher und Bevollmächtigter Botschafter der Republik Sudan in Österreich tätig. In seiner Funktion als Botschafter und Ständiger Vertreter setzte er sich während seiner Amtszeit für die Pflege und Weiterentwicklung der bilateralen Beziehungen sowie für einen kontinuierlichen diplomatischen Dialog ein.

Nach Abschluss seines Mandats in der österreichischen Bundeshauptstadt wird Magdi Ahmed Mofadal Elnour nach Sudan zurückkehren und seine Tätigkeit im sudanesischen Außenministerium fortsetzen.

Ceremonial Reception Marking the 70th Anniversary

On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Sudan and the Republic of Austria, and to bid farewell to H.E. Mr. Magdi Ahmed Mofadal Elnour, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Sudan, the Embassy of the Republic of Sudan hosted a ceremonial reception.

The event took place on 29 July in the Festsaal of the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, providing a distinguished setting in which to commemorate seven decades of diplomatic relations between Sudan and Austria.

In his address, Ambassador Magdi Ahmed Mofadal Elnour emphasised the importance of strong and enduring diplomatic relations between the two countries, highlighting mutual respect, dialogue and cooperation as essential foundations of bilateral ties.

The significance of the longstanding relationship between Sudan and Austria was also underlined in the remarks delivered by Envoy Christoph Meyenburg of the Protocol Department of the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs (BMEIA) and Werner Fasslabend, former Austrian Federal Minister of Defence (1990–2000).

The anniversary therefore provided not only an opportunity to reflect on seven decades of diplomatic relations, but also to reaffirm the importance of continued constructive dialogue and cooperation between Austria and Sudan in the years ahead.

Farewell to H.E. Mr. Magdi Ahmed Mofadal Elnour

The reception, however, was not solely dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Sudanese-Austrian diplomatic relations. It also marked the farewell of Ambassador Magdi Ahmed Mofadal Elnour at the conclusion of his diplomatic mission in Vienna.

Diplomatic Service in Vienna

Since 28 July 2022, Magdi Ahmed Mofadal Elnour has served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Sudan to the Republic of Austria.

In his capacity as Ambassador and Permanent Representative, he has worked throughout his tenure to maintain and further strengthen bilateral relations, while promoting continuous diplomatic dialogue and cooperation.

Following the completion of his mandate in the Austrian capital, Magdi Ahmed Mofadal Elnour will return to Sudan to continue his service at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Fotografie und Reisen sind heute untrennbar miteinander verbunden – doch diese Verbindung besteht bereits seit der Etablierung des neuen Mediums im 19. Jahrhundert. Die Ausstellung Die Welt im Fokus widmet sich der Reise- und Expeditionsfotografie ab Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts, als die Fotografie zur Abbildung der Welt zunehmend eingesetzt wurde. Fotografien überzeugten durch Präzision, Detailreichtum und die Möglichkeit ihrer Vervielfältigung. Im Vergleich zu den bisher üblichen mitreisenden Zeichnern, die nach und nach von den Fotografen abgelöst wurden, beschleunigte sich zudem die Arbeit vor Ort.

Die umfangreichen Serien, die im Zentrum der Ausstellung stehen, zeigen unterschiedliche Regionen der Welt und erzählen von wechselnden Machtansprüchen, dem Ausbau der Mobilität, sowie der Erschließung abgelegener Landschaften und dem aufkommenden Tourismus. Zudem beleuchtet die Präsentation die Zusammenhänge, in denen Fotografen auf Reisen geschickt wurden; die Bedingungen, unter denen die Aufnahmen entstanden, sowie die Wege, wie sie in Ausstellungen präsentiert wurden, dem Wissenstransfer dienten und die Vorstellungen über entfernte Territorien nachhaltig prägten.

Die Reisefotografie ging weit über das Festhalten von landschaftlicher Schönheit hinaus. Um die Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts begleiteten Fotografen oft Expeditionen, die von Regierungen ausgestattet und von politischen, ökonomischen oder wissenschaftlichen Motiven geleitet wurden. Darüber hinaus unternahmen Fotografen Reisen aus eigenem kommerziellem Interesse und bedienten mit ihren Aufnahmen die größer werdende Nachfrage eines interessierten Publikums. Eine Veränderung der Bildproduktion brachte das Erstarken der Amateurfotografie gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts. Wohlhabende Amateur:innen machten auf Reisen Aufnahmen nach eigenen Interessen und persönlichen Vorlieben, und auch Kunstschaffende setzten die Fotografie nach individuellen Bedürfnissen ein.

Die Weiterentwicklung der Kameratechnik erlaubte spontanere, momenthafte Aufnahmen. Der westlich geprägte Blick auf ferne Regionen spiegelt sich in den Aufnahmen der meisten europäischen Fotografierenden wider.

Die beeindruckenden Werke, die in der Ausstellung gezeigt werden, stammen aus der facettenreichen Sammlung der ALBERTINA. Sie nehmen uns mit in die eisigen Höhen der Alpen, an die antiken Stätten Ägyptens und des Nahen Ostens, in entlegene Gebiete der Habsburger-Monarchie oder weit entfernte Länder wie Japan und Indien. Gleichzeitig führen die gezeigten Fotografien die Veränderungen vor Augen, die die abgebildeten Regionen bis heute erfahren haben.

Die Welt im Fokus präsentiert ausschließlich Fotografien aus der Sammlung der ALBERTINA und der als Dauerleihgabe an der ALBERTINA verwahrten Sammlung der Höheren Graphischen Bundes-Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt. Mit dieser Ausstellung setzt die ALBERTINA ihre Reihe thematischer Präsentationen aus ihrer bedeutenden fotografischen Sammlung fort und macht eine weitere Facette eines der umfangreichsten fotografischen Bestände Österreichs sichtbar.

Die dritte Ausgabe des Kolumbien-Festivals brachte lateinamerikanisches Lebensgefühl in die österreichische Hauptstadt

Wien. Am Samstag, dem 18. Juli, luden I.E. Marcela Tovar Thomas, Botschafterin der Republik Kolumbien in Österreich, sowie die Botschaft und Ständige Vertretung Kolumbiens in Österreich zur dritten Ausgabe des Kolumbien-Festivals ein. Die Veranstaltung stand ganz im Zeichen der kolumbianischen Kultur, ihrer Vielfalt und des interkulturellen Austauschs und verwandelte die Yppengasse im 16. Wiener Gemeindebezirk in einen lebendigen Treffpunkt für Diplomatie, Diaspora und kulturinteressiertes Publikum.

Ein Nachmittag voller Musik, Tanz und kulinarischer Traditionen

Das Festival bot ein abwechslungsreiches Programm mit Live-Musik, traditionellen und zeitgenössischen Tanzaufführungen sowie authentischer kolumbianischer Gastronomie. Besucherinnen und Besucher erhielten einen facettenreichen Einblick in die kulturelle Identität Kolumbiens – von folkloristischen Darbietungen bis hin zu modernen musikalischen Interpretationen.

Nach der Begrüßung durch den Moderator richtete Botschafterin Marcela Tovar Thomas ihre Grußworte in spanischer Sprache an die anwesende kolumbianische Gemeinschaft sowie an die zahlreichen Gäste aus dem diplomatischen Corps und der österreichischen Öffentlichkeit. Sie würdigte die Bedeutung kultureller Begegnungen als Brücke zwischen den Nationen und als Ausdruck gelebter Freundschaft zwischen Kolumbien und Österreich.

„Latin Latas“: Musik aus recycelten Materialien

Den Auftakt des künstlerischen Programms gestaltete das außergewöhnliche Duo Latin Latas. Mit beeindruckender Kreativität verwandelten die beiden Künstler Alltagsgegenstände und recycelte Kunststoffmaterialien in Musikinstrumente und setzten damit zugleich ein starkes Zeichen für Nachhaltigkeit und Umweltbewusstsein.

Begleitend zum Auftritt wurde an einem Informationsstand Schmuck aus recyceltem Kunststoff angeboten, dessen Erlös einem gemeinnützigen Zweck zugutekam. Die Verbindung von Kunst, Musik und ökologischem Engagement verlieh dem Festival eine besondere gesellschaftliche Dimension.

Artist Zumbao brachte den Klang Kolumbiens nach Wien

Im Anschluss begeisterte die Formation Artist Zumbao das Publikum mit einem temperamentvollen Konzert, das moderne kolumbianische Rhythmen mit traditionellen Klängen verband. Die Musiker vermittelten eindrucksvoll die musikalische Vielfalt ihres Heimatlandes und sorgten für eine mitreißende Atmosphäre.

Besonderen Applaus erhielt auch die begleitende Tanzperformance: Eine Tänzerin präsentierte zunächst eine eindrucksvolle Darbietung mit Lasso, inspiriert von den Traditionen der kolumbianischen Llanos, bevor sie gemeinsam mit dem Ensemble einen traditionellen kolumbianischen Volkstanz aufführte, der das Publikum nachhaltig beeindruckte.

Ein Fest bis in die Nachtstunden

Bis in die späten Abendstunden wurde getanzt, gefeiert und musiziert. Vertreterinnen und Vertreter des diplomatischen Corps, Mitglieder der kolumbianischen Diaspora sowie zahlreiche Wienerinnen und Wiener erlebten gemeinsam einen Abend, der weit über ein Kulturfestival hinausging.

Das Kolumbien-Festival hat sich damit als fester Bestandteil des Wiener Kulturkalenders etabliert. Es verbindet Menschen unterschiedlicher Herkunft, schafft Raum für Begegnung und macht die kulturelle Vielfalt Kolumbiens in Österreich auf eindrucksvolle Weise erlebbar.

COLOMBIA FESTIVAL IN VIENNA: A Celebration of Culture, Diversity, and Community

The third edition of the Colombia Festival brought the spirit of Latin America to the Austrian capital

Vienna. On Saturday, 18 July, H.E. Marcela Tovar Thomas, Ambassador of the Republic of Colombia to Austria, together with the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Colombia to Austria, hosted the third edition of the Colombia Festival. Dedicated to celebrating Colombian culture, diversity, and intercultural dialogue, the event transformed Yppengasse in Vienna’s 16th district into a vibrant meeting place for diplomats, members of the Colombian diaspora, and the wider Austrian public.

An Afternoon of Music, Dance, and Colombian Traditions

The festival offered a rich and varied programme featuring live Colombian music, traditional and contemporary dance performances, and authentic Colombian cuisine. Visitors enjoyed a multifaceted introduction to Colombia’s cultural heritage, ranging from folkloric traditions to contemporary artistic expressions.

Following the opening remarks by the master of ceremonies, Ambassador Marcela Tovar Thomas addressed the Colombian community in Spanish and welcomed representatives of the diplomatic corps as well as Austrian guests. In her speech, she underscored the importance of cultural exchange as a bridge between nations and as a powerful expression of the friendship between Colombia and Austria.

Latin Latas: Sustainability Through Music

The artistic programme opened with the innovative duo Latin Latas, whose performance combined music with environmental awareness. Using instruments crafted entirely from recycled plastic and everyday discarded materials, the musicians demonstrated how creativity and sustainability can come together in a unique artistic expression.

Complementing their performance, a festival stand offered handcrafted jewellery made from recycled plastic, with proceeds supporting a charitable cause. The initiative added a meaningful social and environmental dimension to the event, reinforcing the festival’s commitment to sustainability.

Artist Zumbao Brings the Sound of Colombia to Vienna

The second part of the programme featured Artist Zumbao, whose energetic performance blended contemporary Colombian rhythms with traditional melodies from different regions of the country. Their music transported audiences to the heart of Colombia while showcasing the country’s rich and diverse musical heritage.

A highlight of the performance was an accompanying dance presentation inspired by the traditions of Colombia’s Llanos. A dancer captivated the audience with an impressive display of lasso techniques before joining the ensemble in a traditional Colombian folk dance that received enthusiastic applause.

A Celebration That Lasted Well Into the Evening

Music, dancing, and celebration continued late into the evening as members of the diplomatic community, the Colombian diaspora, and Austrian visitors came together in an atmosphere of openness and cultural exchange. The festival offered more than entertainment—it created a space where people from different backgrounds could connect through art, tradition, and shared experiences.

Now in its third edition, the Colombia Festival has established itself as a recurring highlight of Vienna’s multicultural calendar. By bringing Colombian traditions, music, gastronomy, and contemporary culture to Austrian audiences, the festival continues to strengthen the cultural ties between Colombia and Austria while celebrating the values of diversity, dialogue, and community.
