New tax bands

New tax bands come into effect on April 1st 2017 for cars registered on or after that date. As before the bands are based on the CO2 emissions of the car. With the new bands, only cars with zero emissions will be tax exempt. For cars with a list price over a supplement of per year applies for five years, from year two, and is paid in addition to the standard rate.

The lower bands have been narrowed considerably. There's now five bands up to 100 g/km CO2, previously there was one. A petrol or diesel car with CO2 emissions of 91 g/km would be band A on the old bands and band E on the new bands, meaning a rise from to tax for that car for the first year and for subsequent years.

Historic Vehicle Exemption

Cars made before 1976 are tax exempt. A forty year rolling exemption is used. The new cut-off date comes into effect on April 1st every year. So for example, on April 1st 2017, cars made before 1977 will be tax exempt. On April 1st 2018, cars made before 1978 will be tax exempt, and so on.

Paper tax discs

As from October 1st 2014 paper tax discs are no longer used.

Also from that time the tax can no longer be transferred. That means if you sell a vehicle that is taxed, the new keeper has to tax it straight away and you automatically get a refund of the outstanding tax. The new keeper can tax the car using the New Keeper Supplement which you get when you purchase a car. You can tax the car 24/7 online or by phone, so when you buy a car it should be quite easy to tax it straight away. You can still tax your car at the Post Office.

There is a facility to pay the tax by Direct Debit, either annually, every six months or (for the first time) monthly. Direct Debit is not available for first registration vehicles.
