It’s 2011. Women can: race cars, go to the moon, hold high political office, work on oil rigs, be fire chiefs, and go to war. But they can’t row a gondola in Venice?

First a bit about gondolas. They’re heavy – about 1,300 pounds, and long – about 36 ft. They’re always made of wood, which might include fir, cherry chestnut, elm, or linden and can take up to 2 years to build. If you’ve ever wondered why the gondolier – the fellow rowing the boat with the striped shirt and jaunty hat– doesn’t have to switch his oar from side to side it’s because the gondolas are built asymmetrically. The left side is a little bit larger than the right, so it floats leaning slightly to one side. Their elongated shape with a flat keel makes them ideal to glide through the silty canals without getting stuck. All this design ensures that maneuvering them is manageable … perhaps even by a woman?

Gondolas have sailed the lagoon for nearly 1000 years, and have been used to conduct business – legal and illegal, and make romance. At one time, many of the gondolas featured a “felze,” which was a little compartment perfect for sharing a smooch – or knifing a foe. What more ideal setting to announce your love – or poison the villain – than the moonlit backwaters of Venice?

Back to the real issue: it’s a boys club that you either need to be born into, or be very patient in waiting to be admitted. And women need not apply! Traditionally, the 425 official gondoliering licenses are passed down from generation to generation within Venetian families – but only to the men in the family, of course. A widow can hire a substitute to take her husband’s license for up to two years. Similar to the bodies governing the Murano glass industry (but more intense) the Gondolier’s Guild governs everything about the black boats: how many, who, what they wear, and how they’re decorated. Even the stripes on gondoliers’ shirts must be of a certain style and size. Recently the Guild issued a stern warning reminding gondoliers that this is Venice – not Vegas, baby, – and to can the glitz!

Within the last ten years or so, the paddling waters have been leveled – so to speak – with the formalization of a gondolier school. Of course most of those who have entered have been men, because, according to school officials, they’re the only ones who have applied. The handful of women who’ve dared to attempt have failed, supposedly because it’s just too hard for a girl! Upon completion, the student earns the right to an apprenticeship, after which he spends a year working as a substitute. Finally, the fledgling gondolier can take the family’s license, or wait for another license to open up for purchase. The list of gondoliers reads like the roster at an Ivy league school – all “son of” and brother of”. Nepotism is king, which makes it tough on an outsider – let alone a woman.

Finally just a year or so ago, Georgia Boscolo decided to swim against the tide. The 24-yr old daughter of a long-time gondolier (at least she had a connection) applied to school, completed the work, and passed – requiring the coining of a new term “gondoliera”! She became such an overnight sensation and attracted so much attention – negative and positive -- that the guild threatened to revoke her apprenticeship. Even her own father is quoted as saying that although he’s proud of her, gondoliering is not a job for a woman! But for this young lady, who grew up on the water, it’s a dream come true.

It’s progress. Ten years ago it was female wait-staff in St. Mark’s Square; today it’s a “gondolier.” Who knows what progress could be next … women in the Catholic church?

Gelato - Best Enjoyed Anywhere!!!

It’s hot, sticky, and humid in the Midwest – after a long rainy June – so it’s the perfect time to enjoy an ice cream cone or two. There’s no denying the pleasure of the cool and creamy melt on your tongue – no matter how you prefer your frozen treat: cone, cup, shake, malt. Aah …. The list is endless.

                So as I sat on the beach basking in the sun and enjoying a scoop of Ben & Jerry’s Chubby Hubby (on any other day it might have been Edy’s snickers, Starbucks java chip, Sherman’s Marion County Blackberry, etc.)-- working quickly before the steamy rays reduced the delicious stuff to a puddle in my lap – I thought about whether the setting made the ice cream … or vice versa. Could really average ice cream be made spectacular in a great setting? And, would an awful setting reduce fantastic ice cream to barely passable? And really, is it possible for any setting that involves ice cream to be bad? See … the sun finally comes out, and the brain melts along with the ice cream.

                Of course we began reminiscing about gelato-ing our way through Europe, especially Italy, but France, Austria, and Germany weren’t derelict in this department either. The rules don’t apply while travelling, and I’ve always believed in the nutritional (hey, it’s dairy) and curative powers of ice cream anyway. Who hasn’t felt the magic offered by a few spoonfuls after a long day on the train or witnessed the resolution of tears after a toddler’s crash on the cobblestoned street with the proffering of an ice cream cone?

                I did a little research to try to figure out why our gelato breaks were always so special – aside from the spectacular settings. I learned that gelato is actually “better” for you than ice cream – as in lower fat; it’s lighter due to the churning process; and of course, it’s not frozen solid – which makes it delectably easy to eat. None of that really matters because it’s just so darned good anyway.

Not unlike a case of Murano glass beads, the Italian gelateria features every color under the rainbow. From the deepest browns of the cioccolato fondente – for dark chocolate lovers only-- to the delicate lemon shade of limone, gelato offers a flavor-infused artist’s palette of pleasure. They do make the standards: vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and chocolate chip. But they’re so much better than ours! And the truly Italian flavors – done well only by them – are amazing: bacio, gianduia, pistacchio, and zabaglione. Maybe it’s the way the Italian names roll off the tongue, or maybe it’s the creamy delicacy, or perhaps even the fact that unlike here, servers are happy to give you a cone with several flavors gently positioned side-by-side. Whatever the case, there’s no pleasure quite like enjoying a gelato by the sea in Capri, on the steps of the fountain in Rome, under an awning in the rain in Murano, on a gondola in Venice, on a bridge in Florence, for breakfast, after lunch, or with espresso. So … setting or gelato? In Italy, you don’t have to choose – so we’ll never really know.

Pastel Adventure on the Lagoon – A Day-trip to Burano

At some point the crowds of the main island of Venice might feel overwhelming, and you may need to escape. Or maybe you’re the sort who wants to see more than two streets beyond Piazza San Marco and you might just be looking for something a little different and off the beaten path. Perhaps you scheduled a luxuriously long stay on the island, allowing you to see what the tour boaters can’t. No matter the situation, if you have a free day – or even a half-day, consider heading out to Burano. We did – and just loved it.

Burano is a sleepy little island about 7 km north of Venice. As always, there’s a public vaporetto (little boat – in this case slightly larger little boat) that will take you there; both #12 and #14 make frequent trips. Just getting there feels adventurous. You’re leaving the “safe” canals of Venice and heading into open water – or so it seems. On a sunny day, the sea sparkles to life not unlike the rooftops and art around you. When you arrive in Burano the cascade of color continues. The island is sometimes referred to as the “Rainbow Island” because of its vibrant – and pastel – colored homes. Here the houses are stacked right up against each other in a crayon box of hues sure to delight. It’s as though Burano didn’t want to pale next to its sister island of Murano, well-known as the home of glass masters who create stunning, vivid home and jewelry objects of all color and shape! So each Burano home is more brilliant than the next. So much fun!

There’s not a lot to do on Burano – that’s the point -- but stroll, chase cats (every home seems to have one or two), and shop – for lace. Yes, this tiny island was once the lace-making capital of all of southern Europe. Supposedly, the lace-making tradition started when a young sailor brought back a gift of an exotic sea weed from his travels for his sweetheart. She wanted to “preserve” it forever, so sketched it and replicated the design using needle and thread. I don’t know about that one – seems a strange present, even for that time. Seaweed isn’t traditionally an endearing gift. I’m thinking maybe something was lost in translation and it was a piece of coral … In any event, lace-making took off.

Fishermen’s wives would sit outside their homes making lace while their husbands were at sea. The 16^th century saw this industry peak as the Doge’s wife established a workshop of 130 women to create lace pieces. The Burano lace found its way throughout Italy, and into France via Catherine DeMedici. Louis the XIV even wore an elaborate Burano lace collar for his coronation. Like every other art form in Italy, there was infighting, corruption and heavily guarded secrecy – where would the fun be, otherwise -- behind the techniques used to make the famous “punta in aria” (stitch in the air) lace. Eventually a school was opened, and some of the secrets shared. It’s since closed and the building houses the Lace Museum today. The tradition of lace-making continues and you can purchase beautiful garments, linens, and other textiles featuring the delicate work. As always – be careful. The real stuff is expensive!! If the price is low, the lace is probably from China.

It’s a lovely way to pass an afternoon … strolling through cobbled streets surrounded by brightly colored houses and shops, and ducking into a few to see the beautiful creations. Some are as multi-hued as the homes. But we preferred the traditional whites and ecrus – and real study in contrast to the neighborhood around us.

Quiet, wonderful dining with the locals is a great way to end a relaxed day. Most of the restaurants offer some open-air seating and the food is stunningly simple, featuring the freshest in seafood offerings paired with pasta and risotto. Gelato on the way back to the vaporetto provides the sweetest ending to a perfect, off-beat day. Savor the moment as in a short spray of sea you’ll be back to the bustle of Venice. But the colors and tastes of Burano will linger long!

Shopping in Venice – It’s all about color!

It’s only right that the souvenirs of Venice reflect the city itself: a sparkling embrace that takes you from the depths of blues in its busy waters to the shimmers of gold on its coffered ceilings – and to every hue in-between.

If you can tear yourself away from the magnificent architecture steeped in history, step away from the cafes and gelaterias, and instead roam the nooks and crannies along the canals that criss-cross the island you’ll see that Venice offers some unique treasures – for yourself or someone special. The items Venice is known for share one commonality: they offer a riot of color!

If you think of other popular Italian cities in terms of a color, a clear picture forms for each. When I think of Milan, I think fashion: clean palettes, angled lines, black and white haute couture. Visions of Florence come in rich burgundies and gold – the gilded age. The Riviera towns of Portofino, Camogli, Cinque Terre, and further down the coast Positano, Amalfi, and Capri evoke images of the turquoise sea, the lemon and olive strung hillsides – lights and brights.

But Venice is about a melded profusion of saturated hues reflected in the two items unique to it: Murano glass and Venetian carnival masks. From metallics to gemstones, from cobalt to fiery red, saffron to aubergine, and tranquil rose to kiwi – items seduce you with their stunning array of colors. Sure, you can buy lots of wonderful things in Venice but none captures the essence as well as those two.

First the masks … Venetians began wearing masks during the parties of Carnevale, to celebrate the final days before lent, in the 13^th century. Their use has ebbed and flowed like the waters around Venice, peaking during the 18^th century when some wore masks up to 6 months of the year to stay incognito and avoid creditors, etc! Today they’re reserved mostly for the pre-Lenten parties and come in all colors and sizes. Some masks cover the entire face (and beyond with curling and spiring extensions); others disguise just the eyes. Most are extremely ornate, starting with a base of papier mache and featuring glitter, gold leafing, and beadwork. One popular mask includes a long beak-like nose and was the type worn by physicians during the plague because of its supposed protective nature! And naturally the prices vary widely. Whether you decide to spend $40 or $4000 – just make sure the mask is authentic, and made in Venice – rather than China!

Murano glass is my pick for the souvenir most reflective (no pun intended) of Venice – and the most usable! Sure, the masks can be interesting and striking, but for the most part they will be hung up or propped as a home accessory. A piece of Murano glass jewelry is easily transported home, and can be worn as often as the owner likes.

The Murano glass industry has a long, storied past. By the 14^th century the glass masters were virtual royalty – toting swords, finding themselves protected from prosecution, and marrying their daughters into prominent Venetian families. In return, the glass masters were expected to stay on the island of Murano forever. Not all did!

The glass ranges widely in both technique and color. Forms of Murano glass include: crystalline glass, enameled glass (smalto), glass with threads of gold (aventurine), multicolored glass(millefiore), and milk glass (lattimo). These techniques find their way into an enormous range of applications from chandeliers and wall art costing hundreds of thousands of dollars to small jewelry items which can be had for as little as $30.

Like the shapes they take, the glass pieces are also available in a wide range of color to suit every palate. From crystal clear with millefiore to deep onyx, every hue you can envision is available. Glass masters use different elements to create the colors in the glass. For example, they create aquamarine by using copper and cobalt compounds. Red forms through the use of a gold solution as a coloring agent.

You could spend a week reading about the intricate processes of creating Murano glass. But what matters for most of us in picking a piece is what we like, and what we can afford! Once you’ve figured that out, the selection is narrower … but still seemingly endless. And fun. But again, beware! The Murano glass industry is highly-regulated and all pieces should come with a certificate of authenticity!

You COULD purchase other souvenirs in Venice – like hand-crafted paper or Burano lace – but none would capture the true, colorful essence of this floating village like its carnival masks and Murano glass do.

Live Venice Like The Locals!

Produce vaporettos gliding by before the sun comes up. Golden rays complementing morning caffe & cornetto at the walnut dining table. Pesto and tagliatelle purchased at the local grocer and featured for lunch after exploring the Doge’s Palace. Wine by moonlight with whispers of quiet life on the canal. The peal of many nearby church bells as the morning alarm clock. That’s what Venetians experience, and exactly what our family was able to live during our stay in Venice several years ago.

We could have done all the typical things in terms of accommodations and sight-seeing – and it would have been just fine, probably even a lovely experience. But instead, we chose a different path. A path we hoped would lead to a greater appreciation of this beautiful city and the people who live here, and one that would allow us to really be able to live as the locals do. We rented an apartment.

Now … if I’m to be completely honest I must confess that I do speak Italian, which makes things a little easier. But apartment rental is accessible to anyone who wants to do things a little differently, authentically and romantically – as the Venetians would. I booked through the online agency Initaly.com, which I’ve used with great success in other cities and villages. But I’m sure others exist!

Of course our approach wasn’t without some issues. Anyone who’s ever navigated a foreign city – especially one where water interrupts each turn – has experienced our frustration! Simply arriving at the apartment was a feat in itself, complete with seemingly absurd walks up one set of stairs with rolling luggage only to climb down a different set of stairs 100 yards away.

But once we arrived, and settled into our third-floor apartment complete with marble floors, antique armoires, tapestries – and modern bath & kitchen -- in the Castello district, ten minutes from St. Marks and about 20 minutes from the Rialto, the stress fell off and anticipation kicked in. Within short hours we learned that:

Our closest vaporetto stop was San Zaccaria;

The grocery down the block and across the canal had any delicious food and beverages we would need;

The streets surrounding us were real streets, where actual Italians lived, worked, and shopped;

It’s really fun to wander, without purpose, and just soak in the surroundings; and

When the wandering becomes too much for the pre-teens in tow to handle, a well-timed cono di stracciatella or gianduia can make everything better!!

Our trip included many of the usual highlights like St. Mark’s, the Lido, and the Bridge of Sighs. But we also branched out and were delivered by private vaporetto (a perk of the apartment) to the island of Murano where we watched glassmasters at work and coveted the stunning creations. Each of us purchased a small pendant which we cherish as a beautiful memory of this great city. From there we went to the sleepy isle of Burano, land of the pastel-colored homes and cobblestoned alleys where we savored a seaside meal, Italian style: many courses, leisurely pace.

But I think we all agree that at the end of a trip filled with delicious foods and fabulous scenery, one experience captures our accomplishment of living like the locals. On our final day, after a busy morning that stretched into early afternoon at the Doge’s Palace, we decided to “go home” for lunch. On our way, we purchased the makings of a truly Italian pranzo di mezzogiorno: just-made pasta, fresh pesto, prosciutto, soppressata, cotto, olives, and ciabatta. As we sipped our vino – or aqua minerale for the underage set – the pasta boiled, the salumi were decoratively displayed, and we sat to enjoy our simple meal at the open window facing the canal. Around us we could smell the scents of Italy: the sea, fresh bread, basil, and lemon. And we could hear other families – Italian families – enjoying the same midday pleasure.

Murano is a commercial port located off the shore of Venice, Italy. A major attraction for tourists and a favorite destination for art glass lovers, glassmaking on the Venetian island has earned worldwide fame. By the 16th century, almost half of the island\'s population was involved in the glassmaking industry. Such was the finesse of their craftsmanship that they monopolized the market almost overnight.

A strive to develop new techniques and refine existing ones grabbed the attention of traders all across the globe as they flocked to the Venetian island of Murano for smalto, millefiori, lattimo (crystalline glass, colored glass, milk glass respectively). Today, the traditional techniques are still being used and a further diversification of products has turned Italian Murano glass into a rich industry. This technique has however been replaced in recent times by flameworking where a gas fuelled torch is used to melt clear or colored glass. The silica used to make glass becomes liquid at very high temperatures. During the cooling process, there is a reverse solidification. Midway however, the glass is soft can be molded into any shape the expert craftsmen desire. This they do either by hand movements or by shaping tools. The historical glass factories that had revolutionized the art of Murano glass making centuries ago stand today as some of the best known glass brands in the world. Venini, Pauly and Antica Vetreria Fratelli Toso (1854) are recognized all over for their flawless designs in Murano glass lights, glass lamps, chandeliers and Italian Murano glass figurines. There is hardly anyone who could deny the level of top notch workmanship involved.

It is not just the silica that is important to the artisan as raw material. Agents (flux) act as catalysts in the melting process. Sodium oxide slows down the solidification of glass which gives the glassmaker more time to shape things up. Then again, sodium is added to a glass mixture to make the surface opaque while nitrate is added to the same to eliminate bubbles. Some of the tools used to mould the glass include borselle, pontello and tagianti. Without proper utilization, it is almost impossible to arrive at the desired result. All in all, there is a lot of hard work going into even the simplest looking Italian Murano glass lamps or the more fancy Murano glass chandeliers. With advancement in science and technology, things are practically looking up. The art is on the verge of realizing new dimensions in terms of share in export market and foreign exchange influx. So the next time you decide brighten up your world, go in for authentic Italian Murano glass lighting.

Eating in Italy, a Guide to an Important Part of the Italian Culture...mangia!

Italians don\'t eat to live...Italians live to eat! Once you have a taste of their cuisine, you will know why. Many people mistakenly believe that Italian cuisine consists of only pizza and spaghetti. Nothing could be further from the truth!

Italian cuisine is very varied and very regionalized. That\'s one of the beautiful things about Italy is that visiting each region is almost like visiting a new country. The cuisine in Bologna (region of Emilia-Romana) is a lot different than what you would find in Sicily.

There are many different types of eating establishments in Italy. I recommend that you try as many as you can.
Meal times are usually around 2PM for lunch and around 8PM for dinner time. Dinner can even start later down south around Naples or Palermo.

A full Italian meal (excluding breakfast) will usually run the gamut from:
* Antipasta – Appetizers
* Primo piatto (First course -usually pasta or rice)
* Secondo piatto (Second course - usually meat, fish or chicken)
* Contorni - Vegetables
* Insalata - Salad
* Dolci - Desserts

Consequently, a dinner ('cena') can last for a few hours. You will always have to ask for your check in an Italian restaurant. A good Italian waiter (or waitress) will never bring the check without you asking for it (unless it is closing time). With that in mind, everything is usually very carefully made with the finest ingredients. They don\'t rush things. If you are in a hurry, you do not want to eat in an Italian restaurant. But since you are here for vacation, just relax and try to enjoy 'la dolce vita', or the good life, that the Italians are experts at doing.

Tipping: Usually the restaurant will include the 'servizio' in the bill. However, it is not uncommon to leave some change on the table, (or maybe even 1 Euro per person) if the service was exceptionally good. At a bar, it is customary to leave 10 or 20 Eurocents on the counter after you are done.

For Italian households, lunch ('pranzo') is usually the main meal of the day which starts around 1 or 2PM. However, in the northern industrialized cities such as Rome and Milan, dinner ('cena') is becoming the most important meal of the day for working families.

Italian breakfasts ('la colazione') are usually not much to brag about....they will start their day with an espresso and a croissant-type pastry called a 'cornetto'. You will have a hard time finding a breakfast consisting of eggs and pancakes in Italy, as you would in the United States or Canada or even Great Britain.
Let us, of course, not forget about the famous Italian wine. Italy is the world\'s leading producer of wine. Not only does it produce and export more than any other country, it also offers the greatest variety types, colors and flavors. Some of the vines around Rome have been producing wine for many centuries. But the art of wine-making itself goes back thousands of years in Italy. However, it was not until the 1960\'s that a nation-wide program regulating the industry was enacted by the Italian government. An indication of DOCG (Denonominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) will ensure that the wine has passed the strictest standards by the government. However, wine tastes are very subjective, and that label will not always ensure the best tasting wine. Many of the table or house wines ('vino di casa') served by restaurants will also be very good. I suggest that you experiment with as many wines as possible. And of course, don\'t drink and drive in Italy. They have tough laws as well.

And when it comes to ice cream, or 'gelato,' Italy has some of the finest that there is to offer. You can savor just about any fruit, flavor or combination in 'gelato' form.

So there you have it....tips to eating in Italy. It is usually not a good idea to start a diet when you visit the lovely country of Italy. But it is a chance of a lifetime to savor some of the best cuisine on the planet. And if you eat sensibly, and use your feet as a form of transportation, you may come back from Italy and step on the scale and be pleasantly surprised.

The Ambiance of Venice, Italy

Ahhh, Venice..sounds of Andrea Boccelli resonating from open balcony windows. Two young lovers comfortably embraced while savoring a nice gondola ride through a quaint canal. Couples strolling down the narrow cobblestone streets mano-a-mano. Romance is in the air. And there\'s no better place for romance than a trip to Venice.

Venice\'s main waterway is the Canale Grande (Grand Canal) which snakes its way through the city for approximately 2 miles. Other canals will feed into and out of this one. The Grand Canal is the 'Main Street' of Venice.

A good vantage point to see the Grand Canal and its activity is from the Rialto Bridge (Ponte di Rialto). The Rialto Bridge is one of only three bridges to cross the Grand Canal. The original wooden drawbridge collapsed and was rebuilt a few times culminating with its current day stone structure in the late 1500\'s.

Piazza San Marco is really the heart and soul of Venice. This is the main tourist focal point of the city. It is a place where people (and pigeons) congregate to people-watch. The place to be seen sipping some cappuccino or to people-watch outside one of the cafés overlooking the piazza.

Venice, Italy is located in the northern part of the country and is part of the Padua-Venice Metropolitan area with a total population of 1.6 million. It carried out an extensive trade with the Byzantine and Muslim worlds and by the end of the 1400's it was one of the most prestigious cities in Europe. The leading families of the city competed with one another in building grand palaces and supported the works of many of the greatest artists of all time, such as Leonardo da Vinci.

Venice is famous all over the world for its canals, which are the main mode of transportation in the city. About 150 canals and over 400 bridges connect the islands. In the older part of the city, the canals form the main method of transportation and everyone gets around the island on foot. During the 19th century, the railway came to Venice and in the 20th century a causeway for vehicle traffic was built. However, beyond the entry points, you will not see any cars.

The classic Venetian boat is called the gondola and although this was used in the past, today it is mainly used for tourists and for weddings and other special occasions. Motorized waterbuses handle the traffic between the islands and there are many privately owned boats. Foot passenger ferries, called the traghetti, service those people crossing in places where there are no bridges. There are watertaxis that travel on these canals as well.

Venice is divided into six sections, called the sestieri. These sections are:

On every gondola in the city you will see a masthead that looks like a Doge's hat. On this hat there are six notches. Five of which point forwards and one points backwards. Last year, during the period between about two weeks before Ash Wednesday and ending on Shrove Tuesday, I ventured to Venice to revel and make merry for their annual celebration: the Carnival of Venice. I have been to many festivals across the globe, and have thoroughly enjoyed most of them, but the Carnival of Venice is truly a party you don't want to miss!

The day I arrived in Venice was the first day of the Carnival and the streets were already bustling with masked men and women. I checked into my hotel, one of the nicer Venice hotels in the downtown district, and I immediately unpacked my costumes and masks ready, armed, and well-equipped to begin partying. All the hotels in Venice were booked and packed with revelers and you could feel the energy in the streets, imbuing the whole city with a type of magical whimsy.

Italy has a long history of masques or masked party events. Saturnalia, an Ancient Roman festival, predates the Carnival of Venice by many years; it began in 217 BC, but shares a defining quality that still permeates the modern Carnival of Venice; both festivals use masks, dress-up, and role-play to transcend the class divisions. During Saturnalia, the masters would dress up as slaves and vice-versa, and during the Carnival of Venice, roles are switched and masks create a temporary, veritable egalitarian state. Both parties relish role-play, the ability to transform, disfiguration and transfiguration, and everyone is avidly invited to join in on the festivities. North America could certainly benefit from this type of celebration in more ways than one.

I vacationed in Venice for two weeks during the Carnival of Venice, and everyday I was clothed in various costumes and masks and I happily adopted new identities based on the day, based on my fancy, and based on my costume/mask for the day. Shedding identities like a snake shedding its skin felt immensely invigorating. I would exhort any/all of my friends to try it out for themselves as it is an invariably refreshing, fun, and revitalizing experience.

After the Republic defeated the Patriarch of Aquileia in 1162 the Carnival tradition began with the slaughtering of a bull and 12 pigs in the Piazza San Marco to commemorate the victory. This celebration gradually grew and in 1268 the first use of masks for the Carnival was mentioned in documents.

It is basically a mask wearing festival but a number of other activities are also part of the event including; costume parades, gambling, and partying. Consider using the masks in your centerpieces. Some masks are "half-masks" and cover only the eyes. These look attractive when balanced on top of a round, tall glass vase filled halfway with water, and a single flower floating in the vase. You might want to arrange a fresh floral ring around the base of the vase to add width. Each centerpiece may showcase a different mask with varied colors and flowers, adding a unique flare to each table.

The atmosphere and the landscape are not the ones of a modern city, but of a city in a fairy tale, remained unchanged since the days of knights and ladies. Walking among streets and lanes or “calli”, as are called the streets of Venice, we are constantly surrounded by monuments and churches that for themselves are masterpieces to be admired for free.

Venice is also called the “City of lovers” because, precisely because there are no cars, it can allow long and peaceful walks, surrounded only by the sound of the water that laps its shores. Venice seems to be a fortress in which the time has stopped, in which there are no apartment buildings or highways. All this without counting that in Venice there are some of the most beautiful paintings and finest original works of a lot of famous Italian artists such as Jacopo Tintoretto, G.B. Tiepolo, Titian, Veronese, Bellini, Giorgione etc…in its churches, museums or palaces.

And here for example, they used to wear masks when participating in the gambling at the Ridotto, because they did not want to be recognized by creditors, who otherwise would not have given them respite. Women used to wear masks not only for not being recognized, but also for beauty. When they went to the Selvadego inn, they used to put on a velvet mask to bring out the whiteness of the face.

Venice is full with locals, bar or restaurants where all people can eat the typical Venetian “cicchetti” (type of appetizers) and drink some wonderful spritz (kind of aperitif), maybe listening to some great jazz music played by some fabulous players.
