Jaro Minne’s ‘slice of life’ short Regarde-moi sees a girl thrust into adulthood, yet paralysed when faced with the choice of making a change for herself or maintaining the status quo for the benefit of the people she loves. Jaro tells us how improvisation brings him closer to his goal of creating work that is both tactile and natural, and why you should never attempt to hide your bad cooking with good sauce.

Regarde-moi (2013)

Feeling angry and neglected by her own mother and brother, Stéphanie is trying to figure out how to move forward in her life. By working all day to pay the family bills, she is catapulted at great speed into adulthood. One day she makes a decision that will change her entire life.

We’re big fans of the fashion film here at DN, but have to admit that whilst your eyes feast on beautifully composed visuals, your mind is often left with little of substance to engage it. Not so with prolific Berlin artist Ralf Schmerberg’s modern horror short Possession – made in collaboration with fashion label Moga E Mago – which plays out a tale of infectious obsession and jealousy against the backdrop of Berlin’s hedonistic club scene. Ralf joins us to discuss working for pleasure and opening yourself up to possibilities of varied distribution avenues.

Possession (2012)

A modern horror film unfolds during a Berlin club night. Drugs, excess and seemingly beautiful people form the backbone of the story. Two friends discover a corpse floating in the Spree wearing a most beautiful golden dress. This moment turns fatal for the two women. Driven by jealousy, envy and greed, they bring ruthless ruin to each other.

HENRI (2013)
Hundreds of years in the future, a derelict spacecraft, controlled and powered by a human brain, floats aimlessly in the outer reaches of space. HENRI, the name of the ship’s power system, is an acronym which stands for Hybrid Electronic / Neuron Responsive Intelligence, and was the first of Earth’s Neuro-Tech space exploration research vessels. Trapped in the cold, mechanical prison of the vessel, the “brain,” which has no recollection or concept of self, gradually begins to experience disjointed images of its former life—images it cannot understand. Carrying the remains of a crew long dead, and becoming increasingly self-aware, HENRI experiences the instinctual desire to be free. Yearning for freedom and yet unable to move, the brain devises a plan to build itself a mechanical body from parts of the ship. Maybe then it will understand the images it is seeing—maybe then it will feel alive.

The full version of HENRI is available for rental or purchase, along with the 30min making of at henrithefilm.com

Not one to select projects due to their ease of execution, director Joseph Ernst hit the streets of London with a 100 year old hand cranked 35mm camera for documentary Londoners and even considered drilling a hole in his jaw to get the shot in experimental film Feeder. Joseph joins us to discuss finding projects that contain something of the unusual and the unseen.

Hand drawn frame by frame in a cross hatch style with sharpies, Cabbit from Soogie is a delightful animated passion project, which attracted a global team of contributors over its four year production period. Soogie joins us to discuss the cathartic nature of creative work and how the act of collaboration can shift the tone and form of a piece of work.

For his latest feature documentary Grasp the Nettle, director Dean Puckett gave up his normal life to live with activists in the Kew Bridge echo village and democracy village on parliament square, documenting not only the lives of the residents but also the wider societal issues their various movements attempted to address. Dean joins us to discuss the practical challenges of shooting the film and getting beneath the surface veneer by committing to a ‘method documentary’ filmmaking approach.

Often the intention is not the reality & I think that’s what I became fascinated with[…] I just felt there was this really interesting friction between idealism & reality.

There have been numerous films which look in to the porn industry and the lives of the performers who make their living there, but very few have stuck around to see what becomes of those who move onto pastures new. Bryce Wagoner’s feature documentary After Porn Ends answers the question of what next for porn stars who leave the industry behind. Bryce joins us to discuss how the offer of an acting job led to his directorial debut and why shot lists may be for pussies, but can save your life during the edit.

I always like to start my questions as a conversation. I think that’s important for all documentary filmmakers.

GLOW: The Story of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling (2012)
GLOW: The Story of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling chronicles the rise and fall of the first ever all- female wrestling show through the stories of those who lived it. From the initial open-call auditions, to the grueling training with wrestling legend Mando Guerrero, to over-night success and global recognition, to the show’s sudden and unexpected cancellation in 1990, the GLOW girls recall their time on the show with a mixture of heartfelt nostalgia and tearful regret over injuries and the loss of friends. For some, the show was a brief foray into acting and a short-lived adventure on the way to a normal life. For others, that time in GLOW would impact and influence their lives for years to follow. For all of the women, working on GLOW was a unique and exciting experience that will bond them forever.

Israeli director Adam Bizanski’s live action puppet short Paul, tells the story of an alienated character searching for his stolen fish through the underbelly of Tel Aviv. Adam joins us for our first interview of 2013 to discuss how he and Paul went from lip-sync performances in his room, to a string of well regarded music videos and a 27 minute neo-noir short funded by Newcastle Brown Ale.

As I Am (2012)
Chris Dean’s heart stopped when he was two. He died but he came back. When Chris was five, his father was murdered, riddled by more than 20 bullets in a gang shootout. At age 18, Chris gained national attention when he introduced President Barack Obama at his high school graduation. Chris is an observer and philosopher who has always had a few things to say about life from his vantage point in South Memphis. He and Emmy-Award winning filmmaker Alan Spearman walked the neighborhood for eight weeks observing and recording what became the script of As I Am. This film floats through this remarkable young man’s landscape, revealing the lives that have shaped his world. Poetic and powerful imagery, captured by Spearman and cinematographer Mark Adams, combines with the young philosopher’s trenchant observations about life.

Adam joins us to discuss his mechanical storytelling approach and how the cube head style of the short enabled a faster production process.

The idea of making a 10 minute film when you’re building it on your own, it’s a mountain to climb. So I’m trying to constantly remove obstacles to get as much done as possible.

Stuart Willis’ ridiculously ambitious graduation short Payload, sets relatable characters in a believable future to deliver a compelling story about hard choices and sacrifice. It’s a short which has garnered much praise online and an interview we’ve been looking forward to posting on DN. Stuart takes us through his methods of building an onscreen family you care about and the benefits of approaching production design as a branding exercise.

Kickstart Clouds

As Jonathan and James mentioned in our interview, Clouds: beta was but the first step along the road to creating a truly interactive documentary using technology to create a brand new visual aesthetic and they need your help to fully realise the project.

CLOUDS is created with the RGBDToolkit — an open-source software library we have developed for 3D filmmaking with the Kinect. Using a Microsoft XBOX Kinect depth sensor paired with an HD video camera, our toolkit makes possible the computer-graphic/video hybrid you see above. By supporting CLOUDS, you also support the development of the RGBDToolkit — helping to make it better for everyone. We welcome you to try it out!

Watch the campaign video below and be sure to head over to the Clouds Kickstarter page for more info and to pledge your support.
