Have you ever wanted to travel back in time and experience a little history of the Moonshine industry? Consider taking the Moonshine Express tour complete with music, story telling and re-enactments in Franklin County, Virginia. Franklin County is the Moonshine Capital of the World.

We experienced a bit of the past with this recent local excursion we took. On April 18, we entered a motorcoach named the Moonshine Express in Rocky Mount, VA. For a small price of $14 for the ticket, we traveled around the town where more than 65 actors provided their story as it related to them surrounding their experiences with moonshine. A lot of sugar seems to be purchased in Franklin County especially back in the 1930's . Could have been used to put up sweet pickles and jams, but story tells it was more for making the beverage. Old cars and firetrucks lined the streets to enhance the experience of this travel back in time. Definitely recommended on a nice sunny day in Franklin County Virginia, the Moonshine Capital of the World!
Passengers on domestic flights may do best to arrive even earlier for flights so that they can be ready for any additional security efforts implemented at their particular airports.

Among the changes, TSA has reported that explosive detection canine teams, law enforcement officers, gate screening, behavior detection and other measures both seen and unseen will be implemented. They also note that passengers should not expect to see the same thing at every airport.

International flights will be where most of the emphasis is placed. There will be increased gate screening including pat-downs and bag searches. Also during these flights, passengers will be asked to follow flight crew instructions, such as stowing away their personal items, turning off electronics equipment and staying in their seats during certain portions of the flight.

There is also a new carry-on rule which will apply to international flights, where passengers can carry a standard-sized bag along with another bag such as a purse or laptop case. Carry-on rules for domestic flights will remain the same.

See TSA's official statement regarding upgraded security here.

Delta to Offer New WiFi Service for Passengers

Here are some of the interesting facts and history surrounding the Great Wall of China.

- There were several Great Walls built to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire from attacks by Xiognu during the 6th century BC and the 16th century . The most famous of the walls has very little remaining of it. It was built by the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang, between 220 & 200 BC.

- There are a total of four Great Walls during China's history, built under the direction of different dynasties:

208 BC (the Qin Dynasty)

1st century BC (the Han Dynasty)

1138 - 1198 (the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms Period)

1368-1620 (from Hongwu Emperor until Wanli Emperor of the Ming Dynasty)

- The current wall was built by the Ming Dynasty. Construction continued by the Ming dynasty (1368–1644), and the Great Wall became the world's largest military structure ever erected.

- The Great Wall is considered the world's longest human-made structure stretching over 4,000 miles in total length from Shanhaiguan in the east to Lop Nur in the west.

- It is estimated that some 2-3 million Chinese died during the centuries it took to build and maintain the Great Wall of China. At its peak, the Wall was guarded by over 1 million men.

- Signal points are prominent on certain sections of The Great Wall. These were located at high points along the wall to allow for increased visibility so soldiers could warn of enemy attacks, or call for reinforcements.

- The Great Wall was mainly built from Earth or Taipa, stones, and wood, before bricks were used. The Ming Dynasty introduced heavy use of bricks in many areas of the wall, as well as tile, lime and stone.

- A 1932 Ripley's Believe it or Not! cartoon claimed that the Wall was visible from the moon. This claim is unfounded and untrue. There's a more popular debate over whether the Great Wall is visible from low orbit outer space. Several astronauts have claimed they saw it, but not without the aid of a viewing device. Others thought they saw the Wall from space but saw the Great Canal of China instead.

- One of the best times to visit the Great Wall may be during the Spring season, in order to avoid tourists. It's a beautiful site amongst the trees, plants and vegetation changing colors. Visiting in fall gives an amazing view with pleasant weather, making autumn another great time to visit. In winer, the wall and mountains nearby can become covered by snow, offering a very beautiful scene. Tourists are also fewer as this time of year is very cold.

More information:

Asia Vacations - Order FREE Travel Brochure!
China - Order FREE Travel Brochure!

Free Brochures Travel Guides

The Statue alone, If measured from the Statue's heel to torch, is a little over 111 feet tall in height.

- The reason why the Statue of Liberty is green or a green-blue color, is due to discoloration caused by natural chemical reactions. Most statues in the outdoors will have these sorts of natural reactions. The chemical reactions made copper salts which created the current greenish hue seen on the statue, in a process called "patination".

- Discussions of building a gift for the United States to celebrate the Centennial of the Declaration of Independence began in France prior to 1867, with French sculptor Frédéric Bartholdi assigned the project. He was inspired by the Suez Canal project which a friend was working on.

- Bartholdi imagined a giant lighthouse standing at the entrance to the Suez Canal, and elaborated on this idea. He decided to create a structure that resembled the Roman goddess Libertas. He presented his plans in 1867 and re-designed plans in 1869, but the project was not approved due to finances.

- Bartholdi originally wanted to present the completed statue to the United States on July 4, 1876 but many delays prevented this. At that time, the right arm and torch were completed and put on display at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia.

- The completed head of the statue was put on display at the Paris Exposition on June 30, 1878.

- Bartholdi was granted a design patent for the statue February 18, 1879, and funding for the statue was completed in France in July of 1882.

- Several small scale models of the Statue of Liberty were built prior to the monument today. One was built in 1870 and displayed in Paris, while another was displayed in Brazil in 1869.

- The French frigate named Isère delivered the statue in New York Harbor on June 17, 1885. It was packed into 214 total crates and disassembled to over 300 pieces.

- On April 22, 1886, the pedestal base for the statue was finally completed. A final touch was given when the masons working on the project tossed silver coins into the mortar.

- The statue was presented to America as a gift from the people of France in 1886 as a representation of the enduring liberty and union of the Country after the Civil War. President Grover Cleveland presented the statue on October 28, 1886.

- The statue was considered the Eighth wonder of the world when it was erected in 1886, as it was the tallest structure in the city and tallest statue in the entire world.

- The width of the Statue of Liberty's skin is just 2 inches. Supporting the statue are extensive steel frames designed by the builder of the Eiffel Tower.

- The pedestal that the Statue of Liberty sits atop of was built on top of Fort Wood on Bedloe's Island. Fort Wood was part of the inner harbor's defenses during the Revolutionary War. Today, inside the pedestal is a museum for visitors.

- From 1886 to 1902, the Statue of Liberty functioned mainly as a lighthouse on Bedloe's Island. An electric plant was on the island used to supply electric power to the statue, making it the first lighthouse to use electricity.

- In 1956, the Island known as Bedloe's Island was renamed Liberty Island.

- In 1966 the Statue of Liberty as well as Ellis Island and Liberty Island were all listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

- The original torch of the Statue of Liberty is on display in the museum/pedestal lobby.

-The following poem by Emma Lazarus is etched on a bronze plaque inside the walls of the statue's pedestal:

The New Colossus
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land,
Here at our sea-washed, sunset-gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome, her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin-cities frame.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she,
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore;
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Tourist/Visitor Information:

- The statue is open everyday from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Currently only the Statue of Liberty's base/pedestal and museum are accessible to the public.

- Visitors can climb to the top of the pedestal to get some amazing 360 degree views of the harbor as well as a closer look at the statue itself.

- There are also tours available from National Park Service Rangers which take about 45 minutes and cover the history of the monument.

More info is available by calling the Statue of Liberty National Monument National Park Service at (212) 363-3200.

New York - Order FREE Travel Brochure!

O'Hare, Seattle-Tacoma, Dulles Airports Open New Runways

The airports getting new runways are Washington Dulles International Airport, Chicago's O'Hare International Airport and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

According to CNN.com the news is welcomed by the aviation community who has faced a year of bad news in the travel industry. This is the fourth runway for Dulles, its first added since the airport opened in 1962. Seattle-Tacoma's runway will be helpful due to the often wet climate there. The new runway allows planes to take off and land two abreast during bad weather, cutting delay times down. As for Chicago O'Hare, their runway is part of a huge multi-billion dollar program which when done in 2014 will make for a safer & more efficient airport configuration.

Transportation Secretary Mary Peters said travelers will benefit from coast to coast. See runways at the three airports »

"It is going to make a difference," Peters said. "It is going to allow us to conduct more operations, meaning more takeoffs and landings per hour at these airports and will help move passengers efficiently through.

"That, we hope, will give travelers a good experience this holiday season," she said.
Don't Miss
Bush hopes to ease holiday travel congestion
CNN/Money: Thanksgiving travel to wane

President Bush, this week, touted the arrival of the three new runways, noting that 14 new runways will have opened during his administration.

While some airport officials and travel analysts joke that delays will never be eliminated completely, Atlanta's Hartfield airport makes a case for adding runways. In 2006 they unveiled a new runway and have increased flights by 25 to 30 per hour, saving the airlines about $10 million a week in fuel costs. It will remain to be seen if airlines begin offering any dirt cheap airline tickets now, but it definitely could takeoff in the right direction for travelers.

See full story: New runways open at 3 of nation's busiest airports - CNN.com

Related entries:

Get Dirt Cheap Airline tickets online

List of Low Cost US Airlines

List of Low Cost UK Airlines

Avoid Travel Charges to Save Money!

Reviews: Garmin nüvi 360 GPS

GPS which stands for "Global Positioning System" helps track your location via satellite and then map out routes to destinations. Today GPS is standard on many cell phones, and is a nice built-in feature of the iPhone. As for driving and traveling a lot on foot, we suggest you consider the Garmin nüvi 360 GPS GPS unit. The Garmin Nuvi 360 is a great travel companion GPS which provides vivid, detailed color maps as well as spoken directions to instruct you while driving. This text-to-speech model features a 3.5 inch screen, wireless Bluetooth technology (to make hands free cell phone calls), as well as a JPEG photo book and MP3/Audio book player. There's even a travel alarm and currency converter built in. Weighing in at just about a pound it makes for a convenient travel accessory, whether traveling on foot or by car.

Garmin nuvi 360 features:

- Bluetooth wireless technology, built-in microphone, and speaker for hands-free calls with compatible phones.

- MP3 player with pre-loaded sample songs and audio books, JPEG picture viewer, travel alarm, and currency converters.

- 2D or 3D views; pre-loaded with most recent Navteq-driven maps for United States, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and Canada.

- Turn-by-turn directions with actual street names; real-time traffic and weather info
Super-bright 2.8 x 2.1-inch sunlight-readable color screen.

- SD card expansion slot for adding more features such as language or travel guides.

With the Garmin Nuvi you simply enter the address of your destination and you're ready to go! Plug the unit into your cigarette lighter, attach its suction cups to your windshield and you have a nice personal navigator along for the ride! The nuvi's 3.5 inch screen has a detailed map which you can zoom in or out on, that shows your cars location as it moves. You also have the great added option of having the nüvi provide speech turn by turn directions. For example, it will tell you to bare right in 5 miles, then stay on Route 40 for 25 miles. The directions are spoken clearly moments ahead of when you'll need to use them, and then right before. There's also an option for seeing text directions to get to your location much like you'd see on Mapquest.com.

One of the great features this unit has is the ability to enter destinations or locations ahead of time and store them for future use. Say for example you're staying at a hotel in Houston, TX. You can input its address for storage, and then type in other addresses you plan to visit, such as a relative's home, a steak house, theater, club, etc. Once you need to get somewhere, the address is already stored and ready to assist you in finding your way to and from the location. The Garmin nüvi 360 GPS even has a feature to allow you to simulate a driving route. It will give an estimated time the trip will take and show you the map of the driving route. This can help plan ahead the day before a trip.

The nüvi has a great array of info already available in it which could help if you're visiting a new area and want to find a place to eat or an attraction to check out. If for example you were in Miami and wanted to find a great nearby seafood restaurant, you would head to the nüvi's "Places of Interest" menu option. It will list out all nearby seafood restaurants by how many miles they are from your current position. Simply press on the restaurant you'd like and nuvi will help you get there! Even better if you own a compatible bluetooth-enabled mobile phone, the nüvi allows you to look up phone numbers from its database of over 6 million points of interest. Maui is the second largest of the Hawaiian islands and an extremely popular vacation spot to travel to! In 2006, there were 2,405,257 tourists who visited the scenic island of Maui. Tourists visited many attractions there including Road to Hana, Haleakala National Park, and Lahaina. Maui also has two volcanoes on it separated by a large fertile isthmus. Legend says that the island was named Maui after a demigod who raised all of the Hawaiian islands from the sea.

Looking for a Hawaiian vacation package?
you can find deals here: Maui Vacations

Hawaii - Order FREE Travel Brochure!

There are two main tourist and hotel/condo areas on Maui - West Maui and South Maui. West Maui consists of Kaanapali, Lahaina, Honokowai, Kahana, Napili and Kapalua. South Maui consists of Kihei and Wailea. Popular activities on Maui include suntanning at beaches, whale-watching, hiking, shopping, watching the sunsets, snorkeling and golf on one of Maui's many great courses.

Find low-cost airfare to Hawaii:

Find Cheap Flights from 100+ Sites with One Click.

For United Kingdom, try:

Search 100+ airfare sites at once with Kayak

Lahaina which is in West Maui is popular as it features a street full of shops and restaurants leading up to a scenic wharf area. From the wharf, tourists generally set out on sunset cruises or whale-watching expeditions. Lucky gazers may catch a glimpse of the endangered Humpback whales at times. Lahaina also offers a Historic Trail throughout its town as well as the Banyan Tree, the largest of its kind in the US at over 60 feet high.

A popular landmark to visit is definitely the Iao Needle in Iao Valley State Park. The Iao Needle is a 1200-foot high rock peak which overlooks Iao stream and makes for a great sightseeing/hiking adventure! Iao Valley also served as a historically significant area, with the 1790 Battle of Kepaniwai, where King Kamehameha was able to ultimately unite the islands and change the course of Hawaiian history! The park gates are generally open from 7am to 7pm.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Y7mw0XoOops/SSD6-wbl9SI/AAAAAAAAADg/BEZ0mYNOZkw/s400/maui-hana-road.jpg" border="0" alt="hana road maui hawaii"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5269487520082949410" />
(The Pacific Ocean inlet on the Hana road)

A journey on the scenic Road to Hana (image above) is also strongly recommended. Tourists can travel the winding, curvy roads and see beautiful scenery including waterfalls and black sand beaches. Haleakala National Park is said to feature the most beautiful sunrise in the world, atop a cold and dormant volcano.

If you're an avid golfer, the island of Maui offers plenty of courses for you! Amongst the Maui greens are The Plantation Course, Wailea Gold Course, the Wailea Blue Course and The Bay course, each offering a unique golfing experience.

The weather and climates of Maui are also something to keep in mind when visiting the island. Generally Hawaii enjoys a two climate season. Usually rainfall occurs often, but the showers are brief, mostly happening during night or morning hours. Summer is definitely the warm, dry season in Hawaii and widespread rainstorms are a rarity. Keep in mind if visiting high mountains such as Haleakala National Park on Maui that the temperatures can reach below freezing.

Hawaii - Order FREE Travel Brochure!

More Travel Information:

Maui Vacations

Dirt Cheap Airline Tickets Online

Disneyland Tickets & Walt Disney Vacations

Honeymoon Travel Deals & Destinations

Manchebo Beach Resort Vacations

Orange Beach Vacation

Holden Beach NC Vacation

Vacations in Myrtle Beach, SC

Find Sold-out Concert Tickets

Barbados Beach Vacations

The Colosseum is an eliptical ampitheater located in the center of Rome, Italy, and is one of Rome's most popular tourist attractions. Once inside the majestic and historic Colosseum you can take a walking tour and feel as if you're walking in ancient history. See the ticket prices and Colosseum schedule below. Here you will also find some interesting facts about the Roman Colosseum to prepare you for your visit to the historic site!

Facts about the Roman Colosseum

- Under the emperor Vespian, construction started on the Colosseum between 70 and 72 AD. It was completed around 80 BC by emperor Titus, but more modifications were made to it from 81-96 BC under emperor Domitian.

- Colosseum measurements: 189 meters (615 ft / 640 Roman feet) long, and 156 meters (510 ft / 528 Roman feet) wide, with a base area of 6 acres (24,000 m2). The height of the outer wall is 48 meters (157 ft / 165 Roman feet). The perimeter originally measured 545 metres (1,788 ft / 1,835 Roman feet). (source: Wikipedia.org)

- The Colosseum's original Latin name was "Amphitheatrum Flavium" or "Flavian Amphitheater", since it was constructed by members of the Flavian dynasty. It is said the name Colosseum was derived from the nearby Colossal statue of emperor Nero. The statue was recreated to look more like Helios or Apollo (Sun god) and was believed to have magical powers, serving as an iconic symbol of Rome's permanency.

- The main purpose of the Colosseum was gladiatoral contests and public spectacles. The Colosseum was said to hold around 80, 000 spectators and during its use for contests, about 500,000 people and over a million animals died during various battles.

- Some of the contests and events that took place in the Colosseum included: executions, mock sea-battles, drama plays based on mythology and re-enactments of famous battles.

- The five cent Euro coin includes a depiction of the ancient Roman Colosseum on it.

- Several movies have included the Colosseum itself or its likeness. In the popular Best picture "Gladiator" (2000), they recreated the Colosseum using Computer Generated Imagery (CGI). The 2008 film "Jumper" included a battle scene in the actual Colosseum. 1972's "Way of the Dragon" featured a battle between Chuck Norris and Bruce Lee in the Colosseum as well.

- About 684 species of flora (vegetation) have been identified in the Colosseum since 1643 when Domenico Panaroli first began cataloguing them. The reason behind so many flora species is due to bird migration, Rome's changing climates and the use of animals from all areas of the world within the Colosseum.

- In the year 1349, a severe earthquake occurred which caused the outer south side of the Colosseum to collapse. The fallen stone was used to build palaces, churches, hospitals and other buildings.

- There is a close connection with the Roman Catholic Church and the Colosseum. In 1749, Pope Benedict XIV declared that the Colosseum was a sacred site where Christians had been martyred. He had the Stations of the Cross installed there and declared it sacred with the blood of those Christians who had died there. As religious tradition, each Good Friday, the current Pope now leads a procession known as the "Way of the Cross" to the ampitheatre.

- Thousands of tourists pay to visit the Colosseum each year. A museum dedicated to Eros exists in the outer wall, and part of the arena floor has been re-floored.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Y7mw0XoOops/SRm-ugyAp_I/AAAAAAAAACo/uL48j0aHdCo/s400/johns+015.jpg" border="0" alt="roman colosseum in rome italy"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5267450945469458418" />
(A look inside the modern day Colosseum)

If you plan on taking a tour of the Colosseum, here's the information you'll need. You'll feel like you're taking a journey into history and mythology all at once, and be amazed at the site! To get you more familiar with the Acropolis in Athens, here's several interesting facts about the Acropolis in Athens, Greece:

Interesting Facts about the Acropolis
- The Acropolis refers to the large hill located in Athens which the Parthenon stands on top of, as do other ruins from ancient Greece. In the Greek language, "Acro" translates to "high" and "polis" translates to "city" - so Acropolis literally means the "high city".

- Some of the other ruins and original constructions on the Acropolis are:
the Old Temple of Athena, the Statue of Athena Promachos, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Sanctuary of Artemis Brauronia or Brauroneion, the Altar of Athena, the Sanctuary of Zeus Polieus, the Stoa of Eumenes, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, the Theatre of Dionysus Eleuthereus, & the Odeon of Pericles.

- During ancient times, the Athenians held a festival called "Panathenaea" which was said to rival the Olympic games. There would be a procession that moved through Athens up to the Acropolis, and into the Parthenon. As part of the ceremony, a vast robe made of woven wool would be placed on the huge ivory and gold statue of the Goddess Athena.

- During the Byzantine period, the Parthenon was converted into a church, and was dedicated to Holy Wisdom (Hagia Sophia). Later, under the Latin Duchy of Athens, the Acropolis served as the administrative center for the city, and the Parthenon became its cathedral.

- The Parthenon temple was built between 447 BCE and 438 BCE. It was designed by Phidias, a famous sculptor, by request of Pericles, a Greek politician. The Parthenon was built as a monument to honor/worship the Greek goddess Athena. It is also known as Temple of Athena Parthenos (Athena the Virgin).

- The Parthenon had been kept in great condition over the course of time, but in 1867's Morean War, the Greeks had a major battle against the Venetians. During this battle, an explosion ripped through the Parthenon causing much of the damage seen there today. In addition, there was a damaging fire during ancient times which created some of the damage seen.

- The Parthenon is an example of Doric-style construction. Dirt Cheap Travel Blog highly recommends you take a tour of the Graceland Mansion and surrounding attractions. The Graceland Mansion is the home and final resting place of Elvis Presley, located in Memphis, Tennessee. The King was one of the Rock & Roll genre & music's great contributors since the late 40's, early 50's.

Graceland is a 13.8-acre (56,000 m2) estate and large white-columned mansion that once belonged to Elvis Presley, located at 3734 Elvis Presley Boulevard in Memphis, Tennessee. There's several great tours available of the mansion as well as Elvis' airplanes, military items and an automobile museum. A guided audio tour is given with headsets so visitors can learn more about Elvis and each attraction.

History and interesting Graceland facts:

- Graceland was founded in 1939 by S.E. Toof, a publisher of a Memphis newspaper. Toof named it after his daughter Grace who later inherited the farm. Later still, the land was given to a neice and her husband (Ruth and Thomas Moore) who turned it into its present colonial-style mansion.

- Elvis bought Graceland in 1957 for an estimated $100,000. The singer/musician was just 22 years of age. Elvis vacated his other residence due to privacy and security issues, and neighbor complaints about the hysteria of adoring fans coming around.

- At one point Elvis' father and mother lived on the premises with him. His mother passed away n 1958, and his father remarried. Elvis' wife Priscilla lived at Graceland for 5 years before the couple was married in 1967. Five years after their marriage, they separated and Priscilla left in 72'.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Y7mw0XoOops/SQN9Xjt8QiI/AAAAAAAAAB0/khXxBlw5O1k/s320/elvis-guitars-outfits.JPG" border="0" alt="elvis uniforms and guitars"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5261186633377268258" />

- Elivs died on August 16, 1977 in the bathroom of Graceland upstairs. The cause of death has been a conflicting point, with some saying it was due to possible anaphylactic shock from codeine pills a dentist had prescribed. The popular cause of death many people know of is an alleged heart-attack.

- Every year on the anniversary of Elvis' death, a large procession goes through the mansion and past Elvis' grave site. In 1997, on the 20th anniversary of Elvis' death, there was an estimated crowd of 50,000 people who visited the area for "Elvis Week".

- Famous visitors to Graceland have included US President George W. Bush who hosted Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi in 2006, and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. who unveiled a special race car with his grandmother in 2007.

- Upon entering Graceland, visitors will see a splendid white staircase. The top of the staircase is sealed off to the public as it contains the bathroom where Elvis Presley died in 1977.

- The tour of Graceland lets visitors see the Living Room, Music Room, Elvis' parents' room, dining room, kitchen, Trophy Room, Jungle Room, Shooting Range, Car port and Meditation Garden, among other sites. All sorts of intricate designs and sculptures/portraits can be seen within the mansion and surrounding areas.

- Graceland has an estimated 500,000 to 600,000 visitors each year. There are currently plans in the works to turn Graceland into a bigger site, utilizing the surrounding areas to showcase more of Elvis' personal items, and allow for a more complete Elvis Presley experience.

- Visitors to Graceland can also go inside two private planes that Elvis once used for transportation. There is the Lisa Marie (a Convair 880 named for Elvis' daughter) and the smaller Hound Dog II (a Lockheed JetStar) on display.

- In 2006, Graceland was added to the list of National Historic Landmarks which also include the White House, the Alamo, Pearl Harbor Naval Base, Dealey Plaza, and Mount Vernon.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Y7mw0XoOops/SQN8a4JEbtI/AAAAAAAAABs/IAVs0vT_bw0/s320/pinkcaddilac.jpg" border="0" alt="elvis presley pink cadillac"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5261185590887739090" />

- The public can take tours of the Graceland mansion as well as an Elvis Automobile museum, Private Presley (a tribute to Elvis' military items) and two of Elvis' private planes. Flash photography and video cameras are not allowed, but regular picture-taking is allowed (non-flash). For more info about Graceland, see the official Elvis Presley site.

Tennessee - Order FREE Travel Brochure!

More Sites to See:

Sites to See: Trevi Fountain in Rome, Italy

Sites to See: Country Music Hall of Fame - Nashville, TN

Rome. It's one of the major attractions in Rome, right nearby the Spanish Steps and some great shopping! The fountain also has a bit of folklore associated with it involving what happens when visitors toss coins into the waters! Read below for more info...

Here's some key facts about this wonderful site, found in the historic and beautiful travel destination, Rome, Italy.

- Historically the Trevi Fountain marked a terminal point in the "Three Roads" (tres vie), where water was supplied to the city.

- Pope Urban VII asked sculpter Bernini to come up with renovations in 1629. The pope died and the project was abandoned, but many Bernini touches are seen in the present fountain.

- Pope Clement XII held a contest in 1730 to re-design the fountain. Alessandro Galilei won the contest initially over Nicola Salvi. A public outcry ensued that a Florentine won, and Salvi was granted the commission.

- Salvi began work on the fontain in 1732, but died in 1751 with the fountain only half-finished. It was finished in 1762 by Giuseppe Pannini.

- The various statues sculpted on Trevi Fountain are: Oceanus (guide of Tritons), Abundance (spilling water from her urn) and Salubrity, holding a cup from which a snake drinks. Tritons and horses are used on the sculpture to provide symmetrical balance.

- The fountain was refurbished in the year of 1998, when the stonework was scrubbed and new water recirculating pumps were put in.

- The tradition with Trevi Fountain involves tossing a coin over your shoulder into its waters. If a visitor does this, they are ensured of a return trip to Rome!

- In terms of coins tossed into the water, it's estimated that 3,000 Euros are thrown into the water daily! The coins are collected nightly, and go towards a market to feed the less fortunate.
