Last month, we looked at verses 5-8 of this passage. The point of this entire section is that Christians must resist spiritual inertia and supplement their faith. We are often tempted to kick back and relax spiritually, but Peter is telling us that it is necessary for us as believers to fight against this and grow spiritually.

Mark records for us the beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. The Gospel is centered in the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ and His work on our behalf in coming to this earth and sacrificing His life, paying the penalty for our sins. This glorious Gospel is so great and far beyond our comprehension, that it will never be fully exhausted or expressed in this world, even though many volumes have been written about it.

The family of God includes all genuine believers in the body of Christ. We are all part of a spiritual family and God is our Heavenly Father who loves us and is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we could ever ask or think. The Apostle Paul loved God and all who are in God’s family. His prayer is that we might be strengthened in the inner man so that we might discover our full potential in Christ Jesus. It is a prayer for spiritual vision that we might grasp the greatness of God’s love and power.

Some people have a problem in believing in that which they cannot see, feel or hear. There are millions of angels, good and bad. Their activity in the Bible provides us much information that helps us to understand their ministry to God's children today. Two major responsibilities revolve around God's glory and God's will. They understand that it is as we choose to do God's will and glorify Him in our lives, that we achieve our greatest happiness and success.

It is easy, when reading the Bible, to skip over names we do not know and cannot pronounce. However, God has a purpose for each and every person named in His Word and their are many lessons we can learn from their lives. Names we will look at in today's lesson are Tychicus, Timothy, Apphia, Archippus, Epaphras, Marcus, Aristarchus and Demas.

Why Shepherds?

If a publicity agent had been in charge of what took place in Bethlehem when Jesus Christ was born, the account would have been much different than what is recorded in the Bible. This was the entrance of God into humanity. Some fanfare was absolutely necessary. Mary and Joseph would have stayed at the Grand Hotel. There would have been lights everywhere, dignitaries of all kinds and musicians from Bethlehem to celebrate His coming. But instead, the occasion was solemn, quiet and humble. The only ones God chose to welcome the King of Kings into our world were shepherds. Why Shepherds?

Christmas can be defined in one word – INCARNATION, which is the union of God with man in one Person. John 3:16 states: God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son. Jesus Christ had to have a body so that He could give that body as the only effective sacrifice for sin and in so doing, accomplish the will of God the Father.
