From the mists of 1973 arose an exciting artform involving 4 disciplines...MCing, DJing, B Boying & Grafiti art. These evolved, changed shape and continued to go overground & underground in a myriad of forms.

My name's Waxer...I came into Hip Hop in 1982 I've stayed with it since, growing up in the Breakdance era in the UK, Hip Hop changed my life. I've seen all the changes in the artform, like a rollercoaster, but I've stuck with it through light and dark times.

Disco Scratch is an honest, heartfelt site dedicated to my experiences, tape collection and thoughts on the past, present and future, of the world of Hip Hop. Expect old school tape rips, podcasts, unreleased demo tracks, past and current material exclusive to Disco Scratch.

Remember when Hi pHop was about Peace, Love, Unity & Having fun? Well I do, and if you do too, welcome to Disco Scratch.

"And we got the master of a disco scratch
There's not a break that he can't catch"

There can be only one!

Well, Disco Scratch has officially slotted into a sub sub sub sub subculture. We corner the global market of biscuit & Hip Hop enthusiasts, there is no doubt!!! As I did a 4 hour special, I got into the mix for the first couple of hours then ran the show with the official KOTB theme at 9PM, so I chopped it in 2 so you can cop both parts and keep the length of the MP3 down a bit.

So for anyone new to DS or to the site, we rocked it like this. It became a bit of an in joke on the show how us old buggers would meet once a week, get nerdy & drink tea & scoff biccies while listening to hardcore Hip Hop. A couple of weeks back I had to hang my head in shame while I chomped on Asda’s own flavourless chocolate biscuits while all the others repped hard with various nang biscuits! So I offered up a challenge, get your most gangster bix (geddit?), your finest tea set, some old tunes and any other old school related bits and bobs, get yourself in the picture and make sure there’s something from DS in the background. I wasn’t disappointed and here are the results!

So here are the entries for the KOTB contest last night, what a quality night thanks soooo much for all that supported it was wicked!

So, here’s my old chum Ridlas:

Rockin the fresh Hijack Tee, points for that, Star Wars hat gets props, graf cup, feelin the biscuits but can’t see Disco Scratch anywhere, had to mark you down for that! Nice to get a late entry from Ridla though and nice one for getting it over on the e-mail…

Next is my man LGs:

This was super tough to judge, he’s got it all going on here, note the quality M & S posh biscuits, also rockin a super dope Hijack Tee with the fly balaclave in true britcore style, with Disco Scratch Radio in the background (extra nerd points for being on a mac!) Great entry…

Next up is homeslice Chris Zero:

Now out of the entries I think he tipped the scales with the most gangster biccies, I mean Wagon Wheel is like mid way to a different type of snack but still carries weight in the biscuit category, I know the judges were undecided as whether a Wagon Wheel could be accepted as an entry, but after referral to the EU Chris got the all clear. So, let’s see what else is in this one… Hob Nobs also make for a well endowed fly biscuit so if there were sub categories he’d get the biscuit gangsterness category. Also rockin the Hardnoise 12 same as Repo, slightly disappointed not to see serve tea then murder, after all that is the DS anthem! Still, a fine array of music and great entry.

This one’s from big show supporter Bunkernut:

Fine choice with the biscuits mucker, plus you actually got your kipper in your picture so bonus points there… nice Kold Sweat 12 on the deck, but your points went zooming up by actually getting a family member involved!!! Love the picture your daughter drew that is super dope and the addition of the picture top right, well…. Suits You Sir!!!! Great pic making it sooooo hard to judge…

But, there had to be a winner, and here is that picture:

What a sublime effort, the 80s movie mags, the old electro mag, the record selection, the biscuits, DS on the MBP, it’s all there…

Super dope entry Repo, I hereby crown you King Of The Biscuits 2010, GIVE IT UP!!!!

So, here’s the tracklist for part 1, MP3 is after that at the bottom, I’ll post part 2 next so your RSS feed picks it up… peace!

Rockin the fresh Hijack Tee, points for that, Star Wars hat gets props, graf cup, feelin the biscuits but can't see Disco Scratch anywhere, had to mark you down for that! Nice to get a late entry from Ridla though and nice one for getting it over on the e-mail...

Next is my man LGs:

This was super tough to judge, he's got it all going on here, note the quality M & S posh biscuits, also rockin a super dope Hijack Tee with the fly balaclave in true britcore style, with Disco Scratch Radio in the background (extra nerd points for being on a mac!) Great entry...

So, let's see what else is in this one... Hob Nobs also make for a well endowed fly biscuit so if there were sub categories he'd get the biscuit gangsterness category. Also rockin the Hardnoise 12 same as Repo, slightly disappointed not to see serve tea then murder, after all that is the DS anthem! Still, a fine array of music and great entry.

This one's from big show supporter Bunkernut:

Fine choice with the biscuits mucker, plus you actually got your kipper in your picture so bonus points there... nice Kold Sweat 12 on the deck, but your points went zooming up by actually getting a family member involved!!! Love the picture your daughter drew that is super dope and the addition of the picture top right, well.... Suits You Sir!!!! Great pic making it sooooo hard to judge...

But, there had to be a winner, and here is that picture:

What a sublime effort, the 80s movie mags, the old electro mag, the record selection, the biscuits, DS on the MBP, it's all there...

Super dope entry Repo, I hereby crown you King Of The Biscuits 2010, GIVE IT UP!!!!

So, here's the tracklist for part 1, MP3 is after that at the bottom, I'll post part 2 next so your RSS feed picks it up... peace!

Just a quickie to let you know DSR will be taking over tha airwaves for 4 hours this Thursday (22nd July 2010), I’m covering Random’s show at 7PM then continuing into the normal slot until 11pm. This week will feature the King Of The Biscuit competition plus the usual japery and old school banter, streaming live on Sensei FM and Freestyle FM

KOTB will be at 10 o’clock, plus I’ll be starting a couple of new features in the show, regular competitions (with ACTUAL prizes!), like the DSR Pub Quiz for all old school UK nerds, the DSR chart (need to get the formula for this yet, not sure how to go about this one but I want to do some sort of chart each week, just a top 10)

Also, some of you have seen my new found drumming “skill” on youtube… so for a laugh I decided to take requests in the forum, here’s the dire performance in all its’ glory:

Click here to view the embedded video.

I’ll be putting a choice of 4 old school bangers for you to vote on, first vote is already up here, so click that & get yourself registered to vote if you’re not already in the forum.

The shop has had to take a backseat for the moment for various reasons, should be up around autumn… lastly, seriously thinking of doing a Christmas event this year so looking for possible ideas for that soon…

Dust… that’s what I had on my fingers after doing the show tonight. I should have had some snooker referee gloves on handling the wax for tonight’s show! Some nice old slabs of late 80s US plastic, as usual digging into the US stack plus a couple of new cuts. I’m now doing jam news every week, on the top of the hour at 10PM every week. Starting next week I’m also going to do a Disco Scratch chart. This will run as a post on the Disco Scratch Forum where you can vote for your favourite tracks of the moment, real basic, best tracks reach the top, those that don’t won’t! It’ll probably take a bit of fine tuning, it’s not like there’s stacks of new material that appeals to the Disco Scratch audience, so I take it on myself to put say 20 tracks on the site and you can vote for your favourite.

I’ll just see how it goes, it’ll be interesting to see how much interaction there is, I mean I think of Disco Scratch like this… once a week at around ten to 9, old buggers shuffle into a darkened working mans club, put their coats on the stand revealing a faded T Shirt bearing the name of an old UK crew, order a cup of tea, break the seal on a packet of chocolate hob nobs and sit down to sift through the beats entering their domes! At 11 O’clock, they all say their goodbyes in standard Hip Hop sign off format and leave the room with a warm glow, a tea induced high and a bellyfull of family circle biscuit selections… a happy soul to know that there’s life in the old dog yet! (To Quote Websta!)

I’m the barman, chatting with you all and providing the background music… the fire crackles away in the background while we smile at memories of B Boy battles, scarpering from the plod and rival crews after bombing the neighbourhood and doing pause button mixes…

But, for any hard rocks reading this, trust me, Disco Scratch is no pushover, if need be we’ll form like Voltron (whatever the HELL our yank cousins mean by that!) and throw our Hob Nobs in the air while we grab handfulls of import 12s to battle you with, DON’T test the Disco Scratch Sound System, we’ll draw tracks that’ll stomp the plop out of ya! Just look at our tracklists from the past shows…

Ahem, anyway, got carried away there, download’s after the tracklist, Enjoy!!!!

Really enjoyed the show tonight, took it into a different zone from normal, dropped some new cuts by Original One & Killa Instinct, flowed from early 90s to mid 2000s and had a guest in the studio, Corrina Joseph to celebrate the life of her sister, Claudia Joseph who was tragically killed at the young age of 14. The last half hour features Corrina playing some of her favourite funk, soul & rare groove tracks from years gone by, complimented by a Wray & Nephew!

Also this show marks the first live stream on Sensei FM simultaneously with Freestyle FM and it was enjoyed by all… I let the webcam loose and showed the Palace Of Villainy to those that wanted to see my gormless mush! Hope you enjoy/enjoyed the show and looking forward to a mad deep interview with Original One next week… peace, love & unity… to anyone who has loved and lost, respect.

<itunes:summary>Really enjoyed the show tonight, took it into a different zone from normal, dropped some new cuts by Original One & Killa Instinct, flowed from early 90s to mid 2000s and had a guest in the studio, Corrina Joseph to celebrate the life of her sister, Claudia Joseph who was tragically killed at the young age of 14. The last half hour features Corrina playing some of her favourite funk, soul & rare groove tracks from years gone by, complimented by a Wray & Nephew!
Also this show marks the first live stream on Sensei FM simultaneously with Freestyle FM and it was enjoyed by all... I let the webcam loose and showed the Palace Of Villainy to those that wanted to see my gormless mush! Hope you enjoy/enjoyed the show and looking forward to a mad deep interview with Original One next week... peace, love & unity... to anyone who has loved and lost, respect.

A few months back my attention was drawn to a thread in the Diggers With Gratitude forum about a new release of an old record. I can’t for the life of me think where the hell I first heard this (I’m usually wrong anyway!), but I was greeted with an awesome typically UK centric slice of late 80s/early 90s uptempo Hip Hop bomb.

The first thing that hit me was that it was a “name that sample” fest. This track uses a lot of well known samples on top of each other, but the flip, “Woke With Nuthin’” really pushes the boat out, it’s like licking an ice cream with a dozen scoops of different flavours in one cone and naming the flavours as quickly as possible. Sounds like an abomination right? Actually both tracks work really well.

Centre stage uses samples from BT Express’s “The House Is Smokin” in the chorus (found on 3rd Bass’s “Triple Stage Darkness”), James Brown’s “Mind Power” making the main break, underpinned by the drums used in the BDP remix of Steady B’s “Serious”, The Turtles “I’m Chief Kamanawanalea (We’re the Royal Macadamia Nuts)”. This is a heady mix of well used samples, but really works well. There’s even a touch of Nautilus on the chorus, the same part used by Run DMC in “Beats to the Rhyme”.

Whirlwind D (Rhyme Traveller) drops heart felt verbals complimenting the track nicely. The tracks were cleaned up and engineered by The Assembly Worker (of Crown Jewels fame), added some spice, a little 808 and made it a nice fat booming sound.. The rhymes are not over complicated, braggadocio and ride nicely and on tempo. From the scene as I remember it back then, most UK stuff was slowing down by 1991 and this would have felt more “right” (?) around 1988 or 1989. Certainly if you dropped this in a mix it would sound right at home amongst a mix of UK & US tunes from that time. The track was originally released in 1991 on cassette and I was really chuffed that this has now had a proper release.

I know I’m a bit late on this, most forums would have picked this track to bits & reassembled it 6 months ago, but I got this fresh plastic in the post a couple of days ago courtesy of Rhyme Traveller and it simply can’t just float by without a full review. Showing on the label as “Liberty Grooves 2 1/2″ this was originally going to be lib003. You can see the LG discography here

Here’s the track on YouTube:

Click here to view the embedded video.

The flip is another mix of well known samples, working in harmony to give it a more elevated feel than the a side. By that I mean it’s not as hard, but equally listenable. Starting with the break used on the track “Black Woman” by the Jungle Brothers (Commodores, “Assembly Line” off the Machine Gun LP), then layered over the top after the first 8 bars is the classic UFO break by ESG with Dexter Wansel’s “Theme From The Planets” (Kid n Play’s “Last Night”) holding it together. As if that concoction wasn’t enough, when Whirlwind D starts rhyming, we hear Isaac Hayes’ “Ike’s Mood” (most famously used in the classic Biz Markie track “Make The Music With Your Mouth”. This seems to go hand in hand with the Commodores and gives the track a floaty feel.

Johnny F is on production and some nice reverse loop effects add to the ingenuity of this track. Cuts on both tracks are basic but effective (reminding me of the section from the Bizzie Boys “Droppin’ It” where he says “Here is an example of a complicated cut” followed by a complex scratch, then the DJ drops a simple but funky cut and it feels far better. The same is true on this 12 and think Q Bert strength scratches would have fallen by the wayside.

The lyrical elements show Whirlwind being more diverse and shows a nice flex on the rhymes. ”The rich 10% don’t know what it’s like” he rhymes as he flows about waking up with nothing. He contemplates how people like to do things in life just to make them feel better, when they could probably do loads more if they could be arsed! Speaking from the perspective of a guy on the street he completes the rhyme with “This morning boy I died with nothin”. As my dear old mum used to say, “There are no pockets in shrouds”.

Click here to view the embedded video.

I was really refreshed with this 12 and I’ve rocked it several times, it will definitely become a stalwart on the radio show. You get a vocal, instrumental and the demo version on each side. If you’re interested in buying a copy there are still a few floating about, you could hit Rhyme Traveller up in the Disco Scratch forum, or get him on facebook. Disorda may have some and as at the time of writing you can cop one at Rarekind. I strongly recommend picking this up, cos when it’s gone it won’t be repressed, a wicked slice of UK history.

If you have anything you would like to submit for review, use the contact page give me some details and I’ll give you an address to send me your wax…

Nuff respect to Rhyme Traveller for the hook up, ta mate!

<itunes:summary>A few months back my attention was drawn to a thread in the Diggers With Gratitude forum about a new release of an old record. I can't for the life of me think where the hell I first heard this (I'm usually wrong anyway!), but I was greeted with an awesome typically UK centric slice of late 80s/early 90s uptempo Hip Hop bomb.

The first thing that hit me was that it was a "name that sample" fest. This track uses a lot of well known samples on top of each other, but the flip, "Woke With Nuthin'" really pushes the boat out, it's like licking an ice cream with a dozen scoops of different flavours in one cone and naming the flavours as quickly as possible. Sounds like an abomination right? Actually both tracks work really well.

Centre stage uses samples from BT Express's "The House Is Smokin" in the chorus (found on 3rd Bass's "Triple Stage Darkness"), James Brown's "Mind Power" making the main break, underpinned by the drums used in the BDP remix of Steady B's "Serious", The Turtles "I'm Chief Kamanawanalea (We're the Royal Macadamia Nuts)". This is a heady mix of well used samples, but really works well. There's even a touch of Nautilus on the chorus, the same part used by Run DMC in "Beats to the Rhyme".

From the scene as I remember it back then, most UK stuff was slowing down by 1991 and this would have felt more "right" (?) around 1988 or 1989. Certainly if you dropped this in a mix it would sound right at home amongst a mix of UK & US tunes from that time. The track was originally released in 1991 on cassette and I was really chuffed that this has now had a proper release.

I know I'm a bit late on this, most forums would have picked this track to bits & reassembled it 6 months ago, but I got this fresh plastic in the post a couple of days ago courtesy of Rhyme Traveller and it simply can't just float by without a full review. Showing on the label as "Liberty Grooves 2 1/2" this was originally going to be lib003. You can see the LG discography here

Here's the track on YouTube:

The flip is another mix of well known samples, working in harmony to give it a more elevated feel than the a side. By that I mean it's not as hard, but equally listenable. Starting with the break used on the track "Black Woman" by the Jungle Brothers (Commodores, "Assembly Line" off the Machine Gun LP), then layered over the top after the first 8 bars is the classic UFO break by ESG with Dexter Wansel's "Theme From The Planets" (Kid n Play's "Last Night") holding it together. As if that concoction wasn't enough, when Whirlwind D starts rhyming, we hear Isaac Hayes' "Ike's Mood" (most famously used in the classic Biz Markie track "Make The Music With Your Mouth". This seems to go hand in hand with the Commodores and gives the track a floaty feel.

Johnny F is on production and some nice reverse loop effects add to the ingenuity of this track. Cuts on both tracks are basic but effective (reminding me of the section from the Bizzie Boys "Droppin' It" where he says "Here is an example of a complicated cut" followed by a complex scratch, then the DJ drops a simple but funky cut and it feels far better. The same is true on this 12 and think Q Bert strength scratches would have fallen by the wayside.

The lyrical elements show Whirlwind being more diverse and shows a nice flex on the rhymes. "The rich 10% don't know what it's like" he rhymes as he flows about waking up with nothing. He contemplates how people like to do things in life just to make them feel better, when they could probably do loads mo</itunes:summary>

Listened to this interview this morning and thought it was important for those that don’t know about this label to learn their history and those that do to refresh their memories. The Electro series of records on this label basically shaped my youth and I can honestly say they are the most played LPs in my entire collection. I own them all on original wax, almost all bought when they first came out, usually from Woolies in Petersfiels, or if I was in Pompey, Our Price in the Tricorn. There really was nothing like getting a new Electro… the first 10 and the Crucials, plus Electro UK are so fundamental in my Hip Hop experience in the UK I can’t bang the drum loud enough!!!

Well, this Dave Pearce interview was fairly interesting, Morgan Khan is animated and relaxed and he covers most of the series of releases on the label, sectioned into genre. Readers of Disco Scratch will mostly only be interested in the Electro section, commencing with Planet Rock, so if you want you can skip forward to 00:42:27 to hear this section, although the entire interview is worth listening to as there are other areas that tie in.

I also have to say that the last half hour of Dave’s choice is particularly dodgy. Not because of the selection of music, but he has clearly played these in software that time stretches on the fly while maintaining pitch, like Traktor or Serato and there are some awful slow downs and speed ups, the Aleem track is all over the place and it seems unnecessary as it speeds up and slows down in the middle of the track without being mixed in. Seems like Dave got taught to mix by his mate from GLR days KCJ….

Here’s the blurb from the BBC6 site, download after the tracklist, enjoy…

Dave Pearce presents a 6 Mix special charting the history of the Street Sounds compilation albums which dominated UK dance music in the early 1980s. Started in 1982 by London based Streetwave Records as a way for people to get hold of expensive, rare dance and hip-hop 12 inch records only in available in the USA, Streetsounds compilation albums bought previously underground music onto Britain’s high streets with a new album every three month. Street Sounds compilations soon became essential for anyone into hip hop, house, rare groove or electro music, at a time when the British charts were dominated by the New Romantic bands like Visage and Spandau Ballet.
Founder Morgan Khan licensed early tracks from Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaatta and The Fatback Back as well as opening the doors for US labels like Def Jam and Profile recordings, at a time when the UK music industry was still a closed shop for anyone but the traditional major labels. Morgan Khan joins Dave in the studio to tell the incredible story of how a Hong Kong-born Indian who grew up in 1970s London came to be so influential in the early days of dance music and how Street Sounds helped bring hip hop and electronic music to the mainstream. Dave and Morgan also play and talk about seminal tracks from the Street Sounds back catalogue including D-Train, Scott La Rock, Roy Ayers and Todd Terry.

The thing about having so much love for the old school UK scene is I am a fan as much as I am someone who runs a website. These interviews are so fascinating and uncover so much stuff, I don’t think I’ll stop until I’ve unearthed every rock of UK Hip Hop! MC Duke has blessed me with a couple of hours of his time and gone into serious depth about his roots in the Hip Hop culture.

Duke unearths loads of gems about the old school sphere of Hip Hop in it’s fledgling years, discussing the formation of the early scene, his years on Music Of Life, events he attended and touches on the infamous situation with Overlord X. He also answers the questions put in by members of the Heroes Of UK Hip Hop Forum and the Disco Scratch forum. It was a pleasure to verbalise with Duke and I hope all the listeners to the Disco Scratch Show also enjoy this…
