SLEAZE CLASSIC GUARDIAN ANGEL and what is sleaze vs. morning music anyway?

German artist Drafi Deutscher recorded this song using the alias Masquerade and came up with a huge pop hit all over Europe in 1983. Being that certain d.j.'s at The Saint in N.Y.C. were well traveled and had a taste for Euro they made this import a sleaze classic. It brought the punters a swaying from Fire Island to Provincetown and back. download Guardian Angel This zip even includes a very rare edit done by the MixDoctor in 2005.

What's the difference between "morning music"
and "sleaze"? If you ask 100 people this question, you'll get
100
different answers. The term "sleaze" has been around since the 70's
and is most commonly used to describe the down tempo music that was
played toward the end of the night (or the end of the party). It's
usually very melodic and pretty. Most of the songs were vocal pieces
with a few notable exceptions. The lyrics tended to be very
emotional in one way or another, often describing the joys of love,
or the pain of losing it. Here's some examples of classic "sleaze"
music, first the joyful, happy songs...

Somebody asked about "Walk The Night" by the Skatt Brothers, wanting
to know if that's sleaze. Well, technically, it's not. It could, and
is, played in morning sets, but it's an example of "sleazy" music,
not "sleaze". Sexual overtones in the lyrics don't automatically
classify a song as sleaze. Sleaze lyrics tended more toward love and
emotion rather than blatant sexuality. There are some exceptions to
that rule, let's not forget Donna Summer's nearly 14 minute long
orgasm in "Love To Love You Baby"! There were a few creative DJ 's
who would take a song that wasn't sleaze and turn it into one by
playing a 45rpm pressing at 33 1/3. Two songs that come to mind,
that worked perfectly when played that way, were "Souvenirs" by
Voyage and "Magic Bird Of Fire" by The Salsoul Orchestra.
Unfortunately, true "sleaze" music is mostly a thing of the past.
The few new, or recent songs that could fit in that category are now
usually classified under the much broader term "morning music".

In the early to mid 80's the term "sleaze" started to fade out, to
be replaced with the much broader term of "morning music". While
this was still the music played toward the end of a club night or
party, "morning music" did not describe a specific genre of songs
like "sleaze" did. The term started describing the "type" of
music that was played at a certain time or part of the night, rather than
describing the actual "sound" or "feeling" of an individual piece of
music. One way to put it is that all "sleaze" music can be
classified as "morning", but not all "morning" music can be
classified as "sleaze". While the term became much broader, it
started encompassing music with a faster beat and also music with a
darker, more electronic sound to it. This also coincided with the
demise of "live" instruments being used in making most dance music.
One thing that didn't change a whole lot was the use of vocals in a
majority of the music, but the lyrics often became lighter, with
less of an emotional punch to them. Here's a few examples of
classic songs that were among the first to be classified with the brand
spanking new term of "morning music" ...

One interesting thing that started happening when "morning music"
became more and more popular was that older songs which were
originally classified as plain old "disco" when they came out, were
now being relabeled and refiled in people's "morning music"
sections. Songs like Foxy's "Party Boys", Lipps Inc. "How
Long", "Dancing In Paradise" by El Coco are all examples of this
reclassification.

Unfortunately, the quantity and quality of "morning music" has faded
drastically over the past few years. That's not to say there isn't
any current "morning" out there, but you really have to search to
find it and search even harder to find somewhere to dance to it...
outside of your own living room. I'll close this with a list of some

FEEL THE NEED IN ME DETROIT EMERALDS and not only

Originally released in 1971 Feel the Need in Me by The Detroit Emeralds came back as a Tom Moulton mix in 1977. The guys were from Little Rock, Arkansas and had a few other minor hits but Feel the Need is considered their classic.

The disconet remix was featured in their Classics Program 1 and the download is even available on Amazon.

I love the label art on the Westbound Records U.S. 45 release in 1972.

But the definitive copy to have is Tom Moulton's Atlantic remix from 1977. It became a morning music classic at The Saint and on Fire Island where d.j.'s like Susan Morabito had the good taste to spin it and bring it to a new audience.

Why even child star turned strung out junkie Leif Garret threw out a version. It was the title track from his l.p. which featured the smash hit I was Made for Dancin'. An example of jumping on the disco bandwagon that worked out well.

The vocalist for La Vie En Rose was meant to be Teresa Wiater. Produced, arranged and remixed by the mighty Tom Moulton in 1977 it has become one of the definitive disco re-make classics. His muse Grace Jones knowing a good thing when she hears one convinced Tom to give it to her. The rest made history as it crossed over to pop all over Europe and other parts of the world.

Teresa unfortunately fell into the depths of obscurity. Although she managed to have one minor disco hit in 1979 with Once and For All. Grace on the other hand.....

Dutch DJ, Producer and Mastermixer really did some magic on an older disco tune in 1986. His mix of Poussez's 1980 disco hit Come on and Do It was memorable and many years before the disco edit craze we've been experiencing since the millenium.

Poussez was like a super-group featuring Alphonse Mouzon and Janet Wright and Connie Harvey and Christine Wiltshire to name a few. In 1979 and 1980 they had a series of major disco hits. Boogie with Me and Come on and Do it were the most successful.

But I've stretched the term to be used at any moment of extreme pleasure. Even a particularly delicious ice cream sundae can encourage me to toss out the line. Though not one of their better known tracks, and they have many. This 12" single from 1983 ushered in a serious electro funk groove for the R&B band. From their l.p. When Will I See You Again it didn't cause much of a stir at the time. But it's now quite collectable and pretty well whenever it gets posted on Ebay and Gemm.

I know for myself back in 1983 it passed me right by, but I am very grateful to have been exposed to it later.

The single peaked at #35 on the U.S. R&B charts and #11 on the U.S. dance charts.

THE BEST ITALO DISCO RECORD OF ALL TIME THE PINEAPPLES

O.K. I hate when people speak in absolutes. It's so fourth grade. But damn if Come on Closer by the Pineapples featuring Douglas Roop isn't the most sublime slab o' Italo Disco Vinyl ever pressed.

It has absolutely every element necessary to perfect Italo Disco. The difference is that Douglas Roop, who was an American soldier stationed in Gaeta near Naples, Italy has a great voice. No cheesy poorly pronounced vocals on this disk.
And what is that persistent instrument throughout? Is it a xylophone? It sounds like one of those plastic piano's that infants bang on. Probably a synthesizer, in any case, but it's so hot and infectious it's chilling. It's like a bag of hot buttery popcorn!

Roberto Ferrante went on to have a career in Italo Disco but he made this record at the ripe age of 18. The seminal but now defunkt Cybernetic Broadcasting System listed Come on Closer in it's Top 10 italo disco tunes of all time. Here's a zip with two versions to enjoy Pineapples Zip
1983 will go down in history as the ultimate peak of Italo Disco. There were so many gems released that year and I'm happy to say that I was one major punter of the Roman scene that year and many of these songs make me ripple with joy. They bring me back to cheerful dance-floors with great music.

Released in 1991 on the U.K. label Circa Test the Trust by Evident featuring Juliette Tieku brings us back to a time when Morning Music was appreciated.

I have to admit it was brought to my knowledge by a reader of the blog. I am very appreciative of this and even more appreciative that a buddy of mine in San Diego had the entire 12" to burn. Better still that he's generous and was happy for me to bring it to all of you.

This song to me is beyond description. I just love it so much up and down and sideways. 10 out of 10 doesn't give it justice. If you happen to have the original pressing on Rain records then you own a very valuable record. I only had the pressing that got picked up by Sam records. A favorite label of mine with many releases that I enjoyed so much in the late 70's and early 80's. Dreamin' by Greg Henderson was one of very few releases by this artist. I'd love to know what happened to him.

Morning Music Classic by Any Trouble

Ahhhh morning music a genre relatively unheard of now. Just think that back in the day a soft rock, new wave or ballad gem could get major exposure on an important crowded dance floor. Even more incredible to believe that the sounds of pretty could actually bring joy to punters.

Of course morning music will never be like it once was at the mega super-club in the East Village The Saint. But that doesn't mean that this style of music should not be celebrated even today.
Any Trouble's Touch and Go is a definitive morning music track. I'd also have to say it was a nifty name for this relatively obscure group from Manchester.

It's hard to believe that 1980 saw such a huge decrease in releases for Disco music. Because just one year before a huge number of classic disco 12" were released. Many of which even crossed over to Pop.

DAYLIGHT VICKI SUE ROBINSON

Vicki Sue Robinson might be mostly remembered for Turn the Beat Around but she actually had a long string of disco hits. Daylight which was also from 1976 was another gem that was a great crowd-pleaser in clubs all over the world. It was written by Soul superstar Bobby Womack.

Half black and born in Harlem Vicki was one of the major success stories of the disco era. I really enjoy a lot of her songs. Another one I particularly enjoy was released in 1979 and is virtually unknown. It's called What's Happening in my Life and I may post it here after the copy I posted in my Ebay store sells.

MARGHERITA BY MASSARA ITALO DISCO DELIGHT

Based on the children's ditty he love me, he love me not, Margherita (daisy) by Massara is one of the most infectious Italo Disco record ever.

Giuseppe Previde Massara had other releases too but none quite like this one.

Highly coveted and hard to find it was recently re-released on a bootleg I'd imagine. Super hard to find in it's original pressing.

Jacques Fred Petrus had his hands on this one. I love almost everything he does.

Crazy Boy by Tato has the elements I love in classic Italo Disco. There is something just a bit off-kilter about the music, the singing is clearly by non mother tongue English speakers and there is something just a bit melancholy about the melody.

1985 was near the end of Italo Disco but this release on Rennaisance International Records Italy is not to be forgotten.

Dreamy disco release out of Trinidad from 1970 Nadie La Fonde's Three Way Situation has all the right components to make it perfect disco. From the laser sound effects to the breathy vocals in the part where it goes kinda sexy.

Even the record company name is brilliant, Starburst records! This one has been included on a very cool compilation called The Real Sound Of Chicago & Beyond.

CD 1 brings the peak time selection and features a spread of Salsoul classics re-worked by some of the current masters of the re-edit including Todd Terje and Stupid Human, alongside Ron Hardy’s famed and previously bootleg-only cut-up of First Choice’s “Let No Man Put Asunder.” UK producer Andy Williams aka Yam Who? cuts a brand new version of Sha-Lor’s house classic “I’m In Love” and also features as bandleader of Fuzz Against Junk on the Harvey remix of their Talking Heads cover “Born Under Punches” from the ‘90s heyday of Nuphonic Records. New productions feature from the stables of Smalltown Supersound, Rush Hour and more.

CD 2 takes us to the early hours with a hazy mid-tempo sleaze mix, echoing the spirit of infamous New York havens like The Saint. Tracks include the Factory Records classic “Reach For Me” by the late Marcel King and the rare “Lovemaker” by Wham (no relation to the George Michael group), re-issued here for the first time. ‘80s grooves from Miquel Brown from the peak days of ‘80s hi-energy and T.S. Monk’s boogie classic “Candidate For Love” rub shoulders with hand-picked mid-tempo beauties from Sylvester and original Weather Girls incarnation, Two Tons Of Fun.

Now into their seventh year, Horse Meat Disco have continued to lead the way with packed residencies at their HQ at The Eagle in London’s Vauxhall, Lux in Lisbon and Tape in Berlin. Inspired by the music and inclusive ethos of New York’s club scene during the ‘70s and ‘80s, the collective have garnered a unique reputation for amazing parties and unmatchable sets, the quartet of DJs each mixing their own quality blend of disco juice. During 2011, as well as playing their annual UK festival dates at Glastonbury and Lovebox, they will be spreading the love to some of the world’s leading festivals including Vivid in Sydney, Electric Elephant, Bestival and San Francisco’s Pride. Horse Meat Disco III is mixed by the Horse Meat Disco residents with mix bundle and all unmixed tracks available to download. Also available as unmixed 2LP set. The package features a selection of photos taken at Horse Meat’s events worldwide and exclusive sleeve notes by New York DJ and journalist Daniel Wang.

To know me is to know I love my space disco. This classic of the genre from 1977 was produced and arranged by Pat Deserio whom we know for his work with Gaye Evans and Nitelite, Kebekelektrik, The Bombers Pistolero track (which incidentally has a B side called Disco Galaxy) among other things.
