The good: U.S. Cellular's ZTE Director is reasonably priced and has respectable call quality.

The bad: The Director is sluggish and takes poor photos, and call volume is severely low on speakerphone.

The bottom line: Although U.S. Cellular's ZTE Director is inexpensive under contract, the carrier offers better handsets at the same low price.

I have nothing against entry-level devices. As long as they work well and are priced reasonably, there's nothing wrong with these handsets for people who don't need to be on the bleeding edge of technology.

But while the ZTE Director is indeed priced inexpensively (without a contract, it's $99.99, but with one, the price drops to 1 cent), it's not a great performer. Its screen can be frustratingly unresponsive, its camera takes washed-out photos, and its processor is sluggish. Frankly put, the ZTE Director is more of a Tommy Wiseau than a Steven Spielberg.

Design
With its long chin, smooth matte back plate, and indented edges, the Director looks pretty much identical to all other entry-level ZTE devices, like the T-Mobile Concord and the ZTE Fury, save for the fact that it features three hot keys (back, home, and menu) instead of four.

Compact and comfortable to hold, the handset measures 4.65 inches tall, 2.46 inches wide, and 0.48 inch thick. Its left edge houses a Micro-USB port for charging and a volume rocker. Up top you'll find a 3.5mm headphone jack and a sleep/power button, and on the right is a launch button for the camera.

On the back, in the left corner, you'll find a camera lens, flash, and a small reflective square for framing self-portraits. Below that are two small slits for the audio speaker. Using a small indent at the bottom, you can pop off the plate to access the microSD card slot (which accepts cards of up to 32GB) and the removable battery.

The 3.5-inch HVGA touch screen has a 320x480-pixel resolution. Unfortunately, the display isn't very responsive, and oftentimes it took several taps for an action to register, whether it be launching an app or closing a window.

It also looked grainy or speckled, which is especially apparent when it displays a blank white image. Lastly, the screen is very difficult to view in sunlight. While taking photos outside, I had to shield the display with my hand in order to see feedback.

Features
The phone runs on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich and features your standard complement of Google apps, such as Gmail, Google+, Chrome, Latitude, Local, Maps with Navigation, Messenger, several Google Play Store portals like Books, Magazines, Movies & TV, and Music, Search, Talk, and YouTube.

Other apps include several from Amazon (for its retail site, Appstore, Amazon MP3, Audible, and Zappos), the game Bubble Bash 2, City ID, Daily Perks (which notifies you of deals from U.S. Cellular), MiEasyAccess, Slacker Radio, apps for getting ringtones and games, Twitter, and a navigator app.

Basic task-managing apps include a clock with alarm and world time functions, a native browser, an e-mail client, a music app, a video player, a calculator, a calendar, a news and weather app, a notepad, a sound recorder, a timer, and a voice dialer.

Other features include Bluetooth 3.0, 4GB of onboard memory, and 512MB of RAM.

Camera and video
Understandably, the 3-megapixel camera has very few photo options. It has a flash, digital zoom, five white balances, three photo sizes, three shutter tones, a timer, compositional lines, an exposure meter, and geotagging. The video camera includes the same zooming, geotagging, and white-balancing options, and it has five video qualities (from QCIF to WVGA). Because the ZTE Director is slow, it takes several seconds for the camera to take a photo, and another several seconds after you press the shutter for it to ready itself for another shot.

Photo quality was obviously poor. Aside from needing to struggle to view the screen in sunlight as I mentioned before, brightly lit outdoor photos were often blown-out, colors appeared muted, and objects weren't quite in focus. Indoor photos fared even worse. You can see lots of digital noise, photos looked grainy, and colors, once again, weren't as vibrant as they were in real life.

Video was pretty much on par with camera performance -- colors were muted and objects were not sharp. Audio also sounded scratchy, though nearby sounds were picked up well. The camera needed several seconds to refocus for lighting changes, and recordings ended up looking pixelated.

Performance

I tested the tri-band device (800/1700/1900) in San Francisco and call quality was decent. Audio didn't cut in and out, and none of my calls dropped. However, voices did sound a bit fuzzy, and I could hear a slight buzz with every word spoken. Likewise, I was told I sounded muffled as well.
Unfortunately, although speakerphone calls sounded clear, maximum volume was incredibly low. I had to stick the handset practically against my ear just to hear the speakerphone, and I was told that when I spoke, I sounded like I was 5 feet away. Oddly, the stereo speaker didn't sound so low when I played videos or music.

I surfed the Web using U.S. Cellular's 3G network (EV-DO Rev. A) and data was pretty slow. On average, the handset loaded CNET's mobile site in 17.31 seconds and our desktop site in 44.13 seconds. The New York Times' mobile site took about 13.88 seconds, while its desktop version took 46.08 seconds. ESPN's mobile site took 14.23 seconds, and its full site loaded in 38.25 seconds. Ookla's Speedtest app showed me an average of 0.2Mbps down and 0.48Mbps up. It took an average of 18 minutes and 43 seconds to download the 32.41MB game Temple Run 2.

The phone is powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm processor. As I mentioned before, the Director is sluggish. Not only is the camera slow, but also simple actions like swiping the lock screen, changing from landscape to portrait mode, and returning to the home screen took a few moments longer than I'd like. While playing the graphics-intensive game Riptide GP, the app never stuttered or quit. However, it showed low frame rates, and it took a hair too long to launch and to quit the app. On average, it took 46.56 seconds for the phone to restart itself and 4.76 seconds to launch the camera.
Although I have yet to conduct our battery drain test, anecdotally, the 1,500mAh battery lasts for a decent amount of time. With minimal usage, it can last the workday without a charge. It has a reported talk time of up to 6 hours and a standby estimate of 350 hours. According to FCC radiation standards, it has a digital SAR rating of 1.2W/kg.
Conclusion
With its 1-cent price tag, the ZTE Director under contract is inexpensive, but U.S. Cellular carries much more attractive options. The HTC One V, for example, has better build quality and a 5-megapixel camera that takes way better photos. And despite running the dated Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS, the Samsung Galaxy Metrix 4G has a bigger, better 4-inch screen and operates on the carrier's 4G LTE network. Both these devices are not only the same price as the Director, but they outshine it in performance as well.

It appears that Samsung is testing those waters. At the launch party for its Galaxy S4 smartphone in India, one of the country's Bollywood actors, Ranveer Singh, performed "Gangnam Style" as "Samsung Style" (imagine pronouncing Samsung like Gangnam).
A video posted to YouTube shows the entire spectacle of Singh rapping and attempting the signature "Gangnam Style" dance backed by men and women in sequined outfits. But it's the lyrics that are the real kicker to the remake.

According to A source, it was Samsung's India retail partner Reliance Digital that organized the launch and enlisted the Bollywood actors to perform "Samsung Style."
However, this isn't the first questionable example of Samsung's marketing. At the launch of the Galaxy S4 in New York in March, the company put together a flash mob of men in suits dancing in Times Square. There’s no shortage of places to store your files online, but that isn’t stopping mobile carrier Verizon from jumping into the mix. Today, the company is announcing Verizon Cloud for smartphones and tablets, a storage and syncing service that lets people save 500MB worth of text messages, call logs, contacts, music, and other files for free. If that’s not enough, you can also get extra space for prices that range from $2.99 a month for a 25GB plan to $9.99 for 125GB. Comparatively, the biggest plan gives you more storage than Dropbox’s identically-priced 100GB offer, but is roughly twice the price of 100GB plans from Google Drive and Microsoft’s Sky Drive, although the ability to easily save phone-specific data like text messages offers some extra utility.

So far, the service is available on the web and a handful of Android devices from Motorola, HTC, and Samsung, as well as desktop apps for OS X, Windows, and Linux. But Verizon says more are on the way, including iOS devices, which it says will be "following soon." In the meantime, iPhone owners will have to resort to one of the other dozen cloud storage solutions out there.

Will the HTC One be HTC's savior? Some Wall Street analysts are starting to come around to the idea.
HSBC upgraded the company's investment rating on Friday, citing the impressive flagship phone, according to MarketWatch. The ratings change comes after another firm, Daiwa, also raised its ratings and recommended buying the stock.

HTC has had a tough go at it recently, with sales and profits sinking with each successive quarter. On a marketing and distribution basis, Samsung and Apple have it completely outgunned, and its market share position remains anemic, not even breaching the top five smartphone vendors.

But the HTC One has garnered strong reviews and buzz with its all-metal design and revamped, love-it-or-hate-it Sense user interface. Even as the Samsung Galaxy S4 reviews emerge, a general consensus appears to be that HTC has the edge in hardware and design.
The two analysts seem to have a similar view of the HTC One, with Daiwa saying it believes the One will surprise people with its sales.

HTC has made significant progress simplifying its product lineup and expanding its distribution. Rather than a scatter shot approach with different phones and carrier partnerships, the company has essentially slimmed down its product to one core offering, available on as many carriers as possible. In the U.S., for example, the HTC One will be available on three of the four major carriers, with Verizon Wireless being the notable holdout.
The company stumbled a bit as supply constraints caused it to delay the HTC One launch -- an issue that is now affecting Samsung -- but that wait hasn't dampened demand for the device.

Whether the HTC One can hold its own against the Galaxy S4 and Samsung's marketing juggernaut remains to be seen, but it at least some early fans.

Great successor to the Galaxy S3, buyers won't be disappointed with added features

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is a nice phone. When I first laid my hands on it, it felt immediately familiar. I was a Galaxy S3 owner for about seven months, and I felt right at home with the new device. If you’re in the same boat, you might feel the same, too. After diving deeper into the software, I found myself saying quite often, “Oh, that’s nice.”

That’s my overarching experience with the Galaxy S4. This is nice, that is nice. But nothing is completely mind-blowing because it’s just a finer iteration of the line of Galaxy S flagship smartphones that Samsung has been pumping out since 2010. However, all the little nice things can add up to make one excellent smartphone. You’ll see what I mean in this review.

Hardware

Perhaps the best way I can sum up the hardware is that I’ve been carrying the Galaxy S4 around for the past week now and no one seemed to notice. My friends didn’t think twice to ask what it was, and it didn’t perk up any stranger’s eyes, either. The differences between the Galaxy S4 and its predecessor are immediate only to those who have obsessively researched the device online, or to those who have spent considerable time with one. Another way to tell the difference is to put the S4 and S3 together, side by side.

The new version has a 1920 x 1080, 5-inch display with 441 ppi pixel density, making it the sharpest display that Samsung has put on a smartphone to date. However, the Super AMOLED display does retain some qualities that the Galaxy S3 had. It’s hard to describe; perhaps it’s the lack of a certain kind of punch, but I’d liken it to looking at photos from a certain type of film: It’s hard to put its character into words, but you know it and feel that familiarity when you see it.
Near the earpiece are sensors and the 2MP front-facing camera. Aside from your typical ambient light sensors, there is also a sensor that detects things like motion and your eyeballs. We’ll get to more of that later. At the bottom are the touch-sensitive menu and back buttons, and a physical home button.
The right side of the device has the sleep/wake/power button, volume keys on the left, micro-USB at the bottom along with the microphone, and a 3.5mm headset jack at the top along with an IR blaster (you can use the Galaxy S4 as a remote control for your TV, music player and more).
The back of the device has a 13MP camera with an LED flash, and down near the bottom is the speaker. The plastic back plate of the device is also removable, covering the 2,600mAh battery, SIM card and microSD card slot. This is actually Samsung’s argument for using plastics instead of glass or metal alloys: Plastic allows the device to be more durable, it saves weight and allows easier access to things like swappable batteries and cards.
To those who care about these types of specs, the Samsung Galaxy S4 U.S. version has a 1.9GHz Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor and 2GB RAM. The global version features Samsung’s Exynos 5 Octa eight-core processor.

Software

Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean powers the Galaxy S4 along with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI. Whether you like the UI is a matter of preference, but it’s not bad and Samsung has taken great pains to make the device easy to use for novice smartphone users along with advanced users, too.
Samsung has thrown in nearly everything you can possibly imagine or want in a smartphone, and added more stuff on top of that. You might not use much of it, but it’s nice to have them there, even if they turn out to be gimmicky party tricks. As an example, you can scroll up and down in certain apps just by tilting your head up or down slightly. It’s imperfect, but when it works you can impress your friends with your Jedi mind tricks.
Neat features are buried everywhere. You can, for example, swipe between photos and videos in your gallery by waving your hand left and right across the face of the phone. You can also use this gesture with other apps, like the Internet browser. You’ll just have to poke around the phone to see what works and what doesn’t.
Another feature taken from the Galaxy Note 2 is Air View, except it works with your fingers now -- no stylus or S Pen necessary. If you hover your finger over galleries, videos, calendar dates and so forth, you get previews, additional information and anything else relevant to what you’re looking at. Air View is even integrated with the Flipboard app, which comes preloaded with the Galaxy S4, and it gives an expanded view of the items within a certain pane (e.g. top headlines in the tech or fashion sections).

All the new features and tricks that have been poured into the device are accessible via the notification panel or drawer (the one you pull down from the top of the screen). If you click the upper-right button in the notification panel, you’ll see an overwhelming number of features and toggles. If you’re unsure what each one does, like Smart Stay or Screen Mirroring, all you have to do is press and hold the toggle and you’ll be taken to that particular feature’s settings. From there, you’ll learn exactly what those features do.

For smartphone newbies, Samsung also has another mode called Easy Mode, much like its predecessor. In this mode, accessible in the settings, you’ll have access to basic apps like your phone, messages, email, contacts, weather and a few more. The idea is it will ease you into taking advantage of the more advanced goodies after a few weeks or months depending on your personal learning curve and level of comfort.

Overall, the software gives a little something for everyone, whether you’re new to smartphones or you’re a hacker and tinkerer, an artist or an entrepreneur, the Galaxy S4 ought to satisfy most of your needs on the software front.

Camera

I’m very critical of smartphone cameras, but for the most part the majority of them are good enough. The Samsung Galaxy S4 camera is no exception. It’s not the best, but it is great as long as you aren’t planning on making giant prints. With that in mind, I really do wonder why Samsung went with a 13MP camera sensor instead of the 8MP found in the Galaxy S3. In my experience, the newer, higher resolution sensor doesn’t lend much more to image quality, mostly because individual pixels have to be much smaller to fit on such a tiny sensor.

I did see 8 x 10 prints made from the Galaxy S4, and they weren’t particularly sharp. Otherwise, for the Web, it’s fine and probably more resolution than you’ll ever need for daily use. Image quality is good, and the camera has a decent dynamic range. Moreover, it’s fast enough that you don’t have to worry about missing important moments.

You’ll also be able to edit photos right from your camera or gallery app. Basic options like adjusting brightness, saturation, contrast and hue are standard, but the camera also features live filters. With the live filters, you can apply color tones or vintage looks to your photos and see what they’ll look like before you even take your snapshot. Samsung has gone to great lengths to make sure that casual smartphone camera users might not have to download additional apps to make their photos look cool.

Perhaps the biggest additions to the camera are the new shot features. First, there is Drama Shot, which allows you to take an action shot and have the moving subject appear in the photo more than once. I’ve included a sample below to show how it works.

Next is Cinema Photo, which is a feature built into the camera that allows you to create cinemagraphs, or animated .gif files. You shoot a scene and the camera will record movement for a few seconds. From there, you can select which areas of the scene to freeze and the areas that will retain their movement or motion. The effect is nifty, although it’s hard to make perfect cinemagraphs and the likelihood you’ll be sharing them as often as still photos is pretty small. This is what everyone talks about when they say the phone is loaded with gimmicks. There are plenty of nifty tricks, but in the end they’re just tricks.

In all, the camera is good. It has good dynamic range, images are sharp and colors look good, and the camera software is packed with tons of features and tricks that it ought to keep you or your friends amused for some time.

Performance, battery life and call quality

I feel like in all but the most extreme cases, performance reviews these days becomes meaningless when we talk about quad-core or eight-core processors. I mentioned before that the Samsung Galaxy S4 U.S. variant has a 1.9GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor. But the hardware is half the story, because how the software and platform use the hardware makes a big difference in practice. For daily use (i.e. phone calls, messages, email, browsing, watching videos, Facebook, etc.) the Galaxy S4 performs just fine. I didn’t experience any real hiccups or lag, which is the kind of performance you expect out of a flagship or high-end Android device these days, anyway.

Perhaps the only issue I ran into when it came to performance was using the camera. Every now and then, one of the little tricks or features like Drama Shot would lag, and I’d have to stage and take the shot all over again. That’s not something you’d want to run into if you’re taking a shot of something you’re likely not going to see again -- like watching your favorite basketball player dunk a ball when you managed to score third-row seats.

I played a few games, nothing very intensive, but the experience was just as smooth. I hate to admit it, but I must have spent about 40 minutes playing Temple Run 2 without taking a breath. Not once did the phone give me any problems, and some would consider it a moderately intensive game in terms of graphics.

Battery life was excellent, and I easily got a full day of use out of the battery except one day when I decided to push everything the phone could do. The Galaxy S4 comes with a 2,600mAh battery that is easily user replaceable. Additionally, Samsung sells a separate charger that will charge batteries only, so if you decide to carry a spare battery or two, you can charge them independently.
Battery life is a big deal-breaker for me. A phone can have every last bell and whistle that you can stuff in it, but if the phone won’t make it past lunch, there’s no sense in owning it. Smartphone manufacturers are now moving toward the trend of making bigger batteries for phones, mostly because the phones themselves are becoming increasingly huge. The upside of having these two-hand devices is that they’re likely to have enough juice to get you through the end of your day, or damn close to it.
Call quality is just as good as you’d expect for a modern smartphone. My particular Galaxy S4 unit is with Sprint, and I never experienced any robotic noises, disruptions in my calls or popping or metallic sounds with the speakerphone. If you’re going to pony up for this phone, call quality is the least of your worries. Frankly, you probably won’t have too many worries at all.

Final Thoughts

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is a great smartphone. Its build quality is good, the screen is excellent and the camera is better than most smartphone cameras, too. Battery life is great, Samsung’s added dozens of new features and its Samsung Hub are all very excellent additions to the device. Will this be a ridiculously popular and another best-selling device from Samsung? You bet.

The one thing I can’t get over is the feeling that the phone is lacking something. It’s lacking soul. That’s not a knock against the phone -- I’ve already admitted that it’s a great device that is going to flood the streets much like the Galaxy S3 did. It just didn’t leave me feeling the way the HTC One did, for example. Perhaps there is something about the
methodical approach to the Galaxy S4 that gives off that feeling. Or maybe it’s the strong similarities between the new and the old devices, which in itself isn’t a bad thing. Or I can just chalk it up to being picky and having strange, intangible expectations. I should just get over it and take the Galaxy S4 for what it is: a damn good smartphone that you probably won’t regret buying.

Answering a phone call should be effortless. Aside from touchless access and navigation, the Perception screen is a large 4.8 inch HD Super AMOLED, an 8 rear megapixel camera and a 2 megapixel front. There’s 16GB of memory for storing videos, pictures and whatever else. Also included is the Camnote app, which lets users capture and save their notes to their phone so they can stay organized. The exclusive app also lets users share those notes with other co-workers and friends using 4G LTE.
The Global Ready Pantech Perception with Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich (soon to be upgraded to Jelly Bean) will be available online at www.verizonwireless.com and in stores for $99.99 with a $50 mail-in rebate and new two-year customer agreement beginning April 25.

The HTC One now faces a setback over its supply of microphones.
Nokia yesterday won an injunction from an Amsterdam District Court preventing sales of the current microphone for HTC's new flagship phone. Manufactured by STMicroelectronics NV for the HTC One, the microphone uses components allegedly invented by Nokia and made exclusively for Nokia phones, Reuters reported today.
Nokia said that it dissassembled an HTC One phone to find that the "dual membrane HDR" microphone, which can record high-quality audio, is the same type used on its own phones.
"HTC has no license or authorization from Nokia to use these microphones or the Nokia technologies from which they have been developed," Nokia said in a statement.
In effect until March of 2014, the injunction prevents ST Micro from selling the component to HTC. The ruling will be limited to the Netherlands, a patent attorney told the BBC. However, HTC still has to scramble to find another supplier.
"We are considering whether it will have any impact on our business and we will explore alternative solutions immediately," HTC said in an statement sent to Reuters.
This isn't the first problem faced by the HTC One. The phone's launch was postponed due to a limited supply of cameras. The delay hammered the company's first-quarter earnings.
The HTC One finally debuted on Friday, spreading its reach in the U.S. to subscribers at AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile. HTC is also offering unlocked versions of the phone -- one a $574 consumer edition with 32GB of storage and the other a $649 developers edition with 64GB of storage and an unlocked bootload suitable for tweaking.

SAMSUNG is being enquired by fair-trade administration in Taiwan over assertions it paid persons to admonish its competitor HTC online.

The tech monster allegedly hired students to write contradictory comments on social networking sites about HTC phones, PC Advisor reported.

Taiwanese website, TaiwanSamsungLeaks.com published documents from Samsung's chartered marketing firm which listed the number of different posts it had been responsible for last year. One of the mails recorded comprised a complaint that his girlfriend's HTC One X telephone smashed into certainly and an claim that Samsung's Galaxy Note was a better merchandise.

The article furthermore listed reconsiders asserting that the Samsung Galaxy S3's had better graphics and battery life than the HTC One X.

Samsung said it had not obtained a notice from Taiwan's Free Trade Commission but accepted the contradictory promotion crusade was an "unfortunate incident" that had gone against its "fundamental principles".

"Samsung Electronics Taiwan (SET) has stopped all trading undertakings that engage the posting of anonymous comments," it said in a statement.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 will be launching on T-Mobile's website April 24 and it will be landing in stores May 1.

This is just part of the major Galaxy S4 launch, as it will be landing on seven major carriers in the United States later this month. While there will be some custom software for each carrier, the Samsung Galaxy S4 will essentially be the same across all networks.

That means you'll be assured to get a 5-inch 1080p HD screen, a powerful processor, the ability to use 4G LTE if your carrier has it, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth 4.0, DLNA, an IR blaster and a boatload of other sensors. It launches with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and a host of Samsung-specific software for things like language translations, picture editing and health tracking.

The T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S4 will be part of the company's UnCarrier plans, which means you won't be getting a handset subsidy in exchange for a two-year contract. Instead, you'll have to plop down $149 as a down payment and you can then pay it off for $20 a month for the next 24 months. T-Mobile will only be offering the 16GB version but you can upgrade that storage through the microSD slot.

I've been using T-Mobile to power my iPhone 5 and I have to say, it's been a mixed experience here in San Francisco. Actually coming in and picking one of the plans was a breeze - choose a $50, $60 or $70 plan and then you're ready to go in about 10 minutes. Unfortunately, I haven't been impressed with the network experience here: there's no 4G LTE network yet, the 4G coverage is speedy enough but the in-building penetration is weak.

Obviously, you mileage may vary and if T-Mobile is good in your area, the Samsung Galaxy S4 is a great device to use.

Apple's upcoming iOS devices could be severely delayed, according to reports

If you've been hopping from one foot to the other, anxiously awaiting the release of Apple's next-gen iPhone(s) then look away now, because we may have some bad news for you. It appears that the iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 and other devices, including the cheaper iPhone and iWatch could experience significant delays.

The news comes by way of Jeffries and Co. analyst Peter Misek, who recently visited Apple’s production partners in the Far East. Misek claims that the delay could affect the full gamut of upcoming devices from the Cupertino, Calif. company.

Speaking to Street Insider, Misek asserted his belief that pre-production issues would lead to manufacturers missing the proposed July to September target for the iPhone 5S. He also cited recent reports of delays in rolling out the next iteration of Apple’s mobile operating system\l ", iOS 7, which would be running the new devices.

It isn’t just bad news for the iPhone 5S though, according to the analyst. He suggested that the delays would extend beyond the next iPhone, affecting the proposed budget iPhone and the long-awaited iPhone 6 which, he now believes, isn’t likely to see the light of day before summer 2014.

Misek spoke candidly about the expected delays, stating "iPhone 5S is having pre-production issues, with mass production at least a month or more away. This, combined with the publicly discussed delay of iOS7, puts a July availability at risk (we had estimated July to early Sep). Low-cost iPhone launch may be pushed to CQ4."

He went on to say "We continue to believe there is almost no chance the iPhone 6 launches in CY13 (Calendar Year 2013) due to supply chain issues; June 2014 is more likely." To make matters worse he also poured cold water on speculation surrounding Apple's alleged smartwatch, claiming "We have not yet seen any evidence of iWatch production."

A significant delay in rolling out new hardware\l " is likely to hit Apple hard, especially given the recent reports regarding the company’s decaying cache with young people. Both Samsung and HTC have just raised the curtain on new, powerful smartphones and without something to meet their challenge head-on, Apple may struggle to keep up – and we may yet also see new devices from Motorola and Google, to add further insult to injury

Bouncing on the alleged leak, Matteo Gianni and Nickolay that, no later than last week, we had already proposed their vision of a hypothetical iPhone input-end plastic now returning to the charge with a 3D rendering of this curved iPhone.

So okay, it's beautiful but I can not imagine a touchscreen extending this way the edges of the device (which are in contact with the hand of the wearer) can , a practical point of view, be considered. Unless the ends of the touch screen are not ... touch ... A bit complicated you can not find ...

Just about a couple of days ago, we’ve seen the alleged prototype of the iPhone 5S with sloped edges. While there is still a possibility that the new model would take on such design, we believe Apple doesn’t want to stray away from the design that put its smartphones on top of others. There is yet another concept showing how iPhone 6 would look like in a curved display.

If iPhone 6 would look like this, its future might be at risk just because of the design. Since the screen is curved, there would be no side bezels, and no real edges on the side making the device incredibly difficult to hold. Considering the entire body (from front to back) would be made of glass, there is a greater risk for the phone to fall especially for users with sweaty hands.

Reports also suggest that the next generation iPhone might not have a Home button. Even if the size remains the same as with the current flagship, the display would be a bit bigger and since there are no side edges, the screen area is going to be wider as well. Therefore, just like what the iPhone 6 concept picture shows, there will be five columns of icons instead of four.

People love the current design even if it’s simple because the device looks elegant. The point is, if you were an iPhone owner, will buy a new iPhone that looks like a flattened toilet roll?

We are not sure how Apple would design its device for it to look nicer with a curved display. But if it happens to look like the concept photo, iPhone 6 would become an epic failure for the company. The device would appear ridiculously ugly.

Remember HTC? For a long time, this Taiwanese phone maker seemed to be on a roll. Its Android phones kept making gadget headlines.

Then, all of a sudden, Samsung came along, all technological and marketing guns blazing, and that was that. It became an Apple-versus-Samsung world. Everyone sort of forgot about HTC.
Its latest phone, arriving at Sprint and AT&T next week, and T-Mobile shortly thereafter, will give HTC at least a few more weeks in the spotlight. The phone will cost $200 with a two-year contract for the model with 32 gigabytes of memory, $300 for 64 gigs.

It’s an Android phone — the most beautiful one you’ve ever seen. Seriously. It makes you feel happy and calm just holding this thing in your hands. There’s a picture of the HTC One next to “gorgeous” in the dictionary.

It’s sculptured from a thin, solid block of aluminum, with a gently curved back that adds to that soothing, worry-stone effect. The aluminum grille, above and below the black, black screen, houses the unbelievably powerful, crisp stereo speakers.
The screen is like nothing you’ve ever seen; with 468 pixels crammed into every inch, it’s the sharpest screen ever set into a phone. It’s a bit unnecessary — you stopped being able to detect individual pixels back on the iPhone 4S — but at least you can sleep well at night, satisfied that nobody’s screen is sharper. We’re talking 1080 resolution, the highest HD video there is.
This screen is bright, vivid and huge — 4.7 inches diagonal. A screen that size makes the One much bigger than, say, the iPhone, but not as unwieldy as some Android jumbophones. It weighs a satisfying 5.1 ounces.

The camera is something special. Technically, the resulting photos have 4 megapixels, but HTC correctly points out that megapixel count isn’t everything. The company claims that these are big pixels that soak in more light — and indeed, the low-light pictures from this camera put other phones to shame.
There are some disappointments, though. There’s no memory-card slot, so the built-in storage is all you get. You can’t pop out the battery, either. Battery life is typical 4G LTE Android; you’ll get one day of use on a charge. The usual set of three

A crying shame that Verizon is the only carrier holdout; this thing would wipe the floor with its rivals if it had that kind of ubiquitous, superfast LTE network behind it.

Otherwise — wow, is this phone packed. It’s ridiculously fast. Its camera, screen and speakers take first place in smartphones. And hey — did I mention how beautiful it is?

The Galaxy Win was leaked less than a week ago, and at the time we thought the name was for internal use only, and that the firm would come up with something a little less cringe-worthy if it was ever to be made official. We’ve got our answer today, as a press release has heralded its arrival under the name of the, um, Galaxy Win.

By calling it the Win, you’d expect it to be a killer handset, right? Wrong, it’s a relatively ordinary upper mid-range smartphone with a big screen, and yet another Galaxy s3-style design. It’s now almost impossible to see a line-up of Samsung’s Galaxy range handsets and be able to tell them apart.

So, what’s winning about the Galaxy Win? It has a 4.7-inch screen, which is a good size and therefore a bit of a win, but it’s a regular LCD and has a 480 x 800 pixel resolution, so less of a win there. A 1.2GHz quad-core processor with 1GB of RAM should provide enough power to keep the Win winning, but the 5-megapixel camera and the VGA video call lens probably won’t do the same when it comes to snapping pictures.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with TouchWiz takes care of the OS, plus the Win has a few software tweaks such as Smart Alert, Easy Mode and Samsung’s Motion UX gesture control system. The spec list is completed with Wi-Fi. Bluetooth 3.0, DLNA, a 2000mAh battery, 3G HSUPA connectivity and 8GB of internal memory, plus a microSD card slot.

Samsung hasn’t provided any firm release plans for the Galaxy Win, although it will be made available as both single-SIM and a dual-SIM device, suggesting it’s going to get a wide release when it does arrive. Buyers will have the choice of a white or gray chassis, and the knowledge they’ve chosen one of the stupidest named phones of all time.

What T-Mobile’s move means for consumers

It’s time for consumers to consider breaking out of the Great Cellphone Subsidy Con.

When you buy a cellphone – an iPhone or Android phone, let’s say – you pay $200. The real price for that sophisticated piece of electronics is $600. But Verizon, AT&T and Sprint subsidize the phone. Your $200 is a down payment. You pay off the remaining $400 over the course of your two-year contract.

But once you’ve finished paying off your handset, your monthly bill doesn’t go down. You keep reimbursing the cellphone company as though you still owed it. Forever.

And speaking of the two-year contract, what other service locks you in for two years? Home phone? Cable TV? Internet? Magazine subscriptions? Baby sitter? Lawn maintenance? In any other industry, you can switch to a rival if you ever become unhappy. Companies have to work for your loyalty.
If you try to leave your cellphone carrier early, you’re slapped with a penalty of hundreds of dollars.

But now the landscape changed. T-Mobile has violated the unwritten conspiracy code of cellphone carriers. John J. Legere, T-Mobile’s chief executive, took to the stage not only to expose the usurious schemes, but also to announce that it wouldn’t be playing those games anymore.
At the new T-Mobile, the con is over. You can buy your phone outright, if you like – an iPhone 5 is $580, a Samsung Galaxy S III is $550. Or you can treat it like a car or a house: Pay $100 for the phone now and pay off the rest over time, $20 a month.

That may sound like the existing con, but it’s different in a few big ways. You pay only what the phone really costs. You don’t pay interest, and you stop paying when you’ve paid for the phone.

T-Mobile doesn’t care what phone you use, either; if it works on T-Mobile’s network, you can use it. And why not? Would you buy a car that uses only one brand of gas?

Yet another radical change: There are no more yearly contracts at T-Mobile. You can leave at any time. “If we suck this month, drop us,” said Legere. “Go somewhere else.”

In the new T-Mobile world, there are only three plans. All come with unlimited phone calls, unlimited texts, free tethering, which allows your laptop to get online via your phone, and unlimited Internet. The only difference is how much high-speed wireless Internet you get each month: 500 megabytes, $50 a month; 2 gigabytes, $60; or unlimited, $70.

After you’ve burned through that much data, your Internet speed drops to 2G speeds for the rest of the month – suitable for email or pulling up a Web page, but much too slow for video. You can upgrade your plan for a given month, if you like, but the point is that you’ll never be penalized.
Over time, these plans can save you a huge amount of money. For a plan that matches T-Mobile’s $60 plan, Verizon would charge you $100 a month. For a plan that matches T-Mobile’s $70 plan, Sprint would charge you $110 a month.

Plus, Verizon and AT&T don’t offer the “unlimited slower Internet” option after you’ve eaten up your monthly data allotment. Instead, they just slap you with a steep per-gigabyte overage fee, $15 a gigabyte.

And in what may be the biggest, best news of all: T-Mobile is the first major carrier to eliminate the ridiculous, unnecessary, airtime-eating, 15 seconds of prerecorded instructions that you hear when you want to leave a message. When you call a T-Mobile customer, you go right to the beep.

T-Mobile can afford to be the disrupter because it’s in last place. It has the fewest customers and the smallest network coverage of any of the Big Four in the United States. It can take risks because it has nothing to lose.
Part of T-Mobile’s problem is that it’s famous for not offering the iPhone and not offering the fastest kind of Internet network, known as 4G LTE.
Fortunately, the company is tackling both of those drawbacks. On April 12, it will offer the iPhone 5 – with a feature nobody else has, in fact, called HD Voice. It offers supersharp voice quality when you’re calling another phone that has HD Voice.

The company has also managed to buy, merge and lobby its way into ownership of more spectrum – expensive, very limited cellular frequencies – that will allow it to install LTE networks at last. The company says it will have 100 million Americans covered by LTE signal by summer, and 200 million covered by year’s end.

As long as T-Mobile had a sad little network running no-name phones, it wouldn’t matter what its policies were.
But once T-Mobile’s network and phones become contenders, its company’s much more fair, transparent, logical policies will suddenly matter. Those practices will have teeth. The other carriers will have to start paying attention.

And they should. The Great Cellphone Subsidy Con is indefensible no matter how you slice it – why should you keep paying the carrier for the price of a phone you’ve fully repaid? – and the two-year contract is an anti-competitive, anti-innovation greed machine. Those practices should stomp right across your outrage threshold.

If T-Mobile’s crazy, way-out plan succeeds, those practices may just go away.

And that’s why, even if you have no intention of becoming a T-Mobile customer – maybe there’s no coverage where you live, or maybe you’re already locked into a two-year contract – you should pay attention.
One of the four emperors has now put on real clothes. The question is, will the others follow suit?

The 4G-enabled smartphone will be available on all major networks from the end of April.

"The new BlackBerry Q10 takes everything that’s great about the recently launched BlackBerry Z10 and adds a physical QWERTY keyboard – perfect for users who still prefer the physical push of a button when using their devices," claimed Graham Stapleton, chief operating officer at Carphone Warehouse.

The smartphone is a return to the popular full QWERTY keyboard after the touchscreen Z10 in January.

The company, which changed its name to BlackBerry from Research in Motion, announced a figure of one million Z10 sales last month.

The company has pinned its hopes on the Z10 and Q10 in the face of competition from Samsung and Apple. The Q10 is the second of two handsets that will use the BB10 operating system.

The device has the keyboard that was the foundation for much of BlackBerry’s growth among professionals who found it useful for writing emails and documents.

The company confounded expectations on Wall Street and posted a $114 million (£75 million) profit in March for the last financial year.

However, Samsung’s profit announcement today of £5.1bn in the first quarter of 2013 provided a reminder of the gulf between BlackBerry and the world’s biggest smartphone manufacturer.

The iPhone 5 is now up for pre-order through T-Mobile.

T-Mobile subscribers can now preorder the iPhone 5 before it officially hits stores in another week.

The carrier's Web page lists all varieties of the iPhone for preorder -- the 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB models in either black or white. Consumers will also find their purchase options different from the ones offered by Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint.

With T-Mobile's new contract-free, subsidy-free plan, buyers have two choices: They can shell out the full nonsubsidized cost of the iPhone up front, or they can contribute a small down payment and then pay off the full cost in the form of 24 monthly payments of $20 each.
Through T-Mobile's new plan, the 16GB iPhone 5 sells for $99 up front or $579 in total, the 32GB edition costs $199 initially or $679 in total, and the 64GB flavor goes for $299 up front or $779 in total.

In return, T-Mobile subscribers can choose from among three different plans offering voice, text, and data ranging in price from $50 to $70 per month for a single line.

Adding more lines under a family plan naturally raises the monthly cost. For example, a plan that provides unlimited 4G access along with text and data would cost $70 per month for a single line and $120 for two lines.

Though the iPhone 5 supports 4G LTE, most T-Mobile subscribers are still stuck with the carrier's HSPA+ speeds. T-Mobile's 4G LTE network just got off the ground last month, debuting in seven markets across the nation. The company has revealed plans to expand its LTE network to 100 million people by the middle of 2013 and 200 million by the end of the year.

According to reports, its operating profit is expected be around 8.7 trillion won ($7.7 billion), pushed by sales of its current smartphone lineup even as its new standard bearer, the Galaxy S 4, waits in the wings. The projections slot in lower than its record setting $8.27 billion Q4 2012, but still up significantly from last year's $5.16 billion operating profit for the same period. The torrent of leaks these past few days haven’t left much to the imagination, but HTC’s Peter Chou has just officially pulled back the curtain on the first phone to ship with Facebook Home — the HTC First — at Facebook’s Menlo Park headquarters.

According to HTC CEO Peter Chou the First will be the “ultimate social phone,” though he declined to dig into the device’s specs during his brief moments on-stage. The device will ship in four colors, and will support AT&T’s LTE network right out of the gate. Can’t wait for your chance to take it for a spin? The First will be available for $99 (with a 2 year contract naturally) starting on April 12, and pre-orders for the device kick off today. Those of you outside the U.S. will be able to join in the fun shortly too, as Mark Zuckerberg also noted that the phone would find its way to UK carriers Orange and EE in short order.

The mid-range First will be available in black, white, red and blue, and sports a 4.3-inch display that jibes with earlier reports. Facebook Home obviously serves to obscure the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean build that’s actually running the show, while one of Qualcomm’s dual-core Snapdragon 400 chipsets (and not the MSM8960 that was previously reported) provides the horsepower from inside that smooth, curved chassis. It’s not a bad looking phone and the internals aren’t quite as lousy as many had expected them to be, but all this begs a very important question — will anyone actually buy this phone when you can fire up Facebook Home on your (supported) Android handset for a whopping zero dollars?

I mean, c’mon — I’m a sucker for even mildly neat hardware, but so far neither HTC nor AT&T (whose CEOs both appeared on-stage to talk about how darned great the thing is) could provide a compelling reason why it’s worth buying. LTE? A handsome design? Neither of those are exactly hard to come by these days, are they? Facebook has said that the First will feature better integration for all those notifications you’re bound to get than if you had just installed the app, but at this point there’s little way of knowing how big a difference it’ll actually make. HTC knows how to make great hardware and I don’t mean to diminish that, but a lame device that’s been put together well is still a lame device.

This marks the second time that the social networking giant and the beleaguered Taiwanese OEM have collaborated on a peculiar hardware play. The first, if you’ll recall, were HTC Status (nee Chacha) and the Salsa released back in 2011– their main claim to fame was a dedicated Facebook button for quick access to your friends and feeds. Considering that neither device was exactly a runaway hit, it’s no surprise to see that Facebook and HTC have taken things in a different, more substantial direction with the One. Of course, the First is going to be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Facebook Home devices — Zuckerberg also pointed to a Facebook Home Program which allows hardware manufacturers to build Facebook Home into their own forthcoming handsets.

www.mylancellular.com Facebook has been putting increasing focus on its mobile products for over two years.

Facebook users post more photos, write more status updates and hit the like button more often from mobile devices than they do from computers. So it was almost inevitable that Facebook would introduce a smartphone that put its social network front and center.

On Thursday, Facebook plans to unveil the first smartphone created to showcase its social network. The phone, made by HTC, uses a version of Google’s Android software, according to two people briefed on the announcement, which will be made at a news conference at the company’s headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif.

The software is designed so that some of the core features of the phone, like the camera, will be built around Facebook’s services, according to one of the people, who is a Facebook employee. Both people briefed on Facebook’s plans spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the product before the formal announcement.

Derick Mains, a Facebook spokesman, declined to share details of the event. But he said it would be a “significant mobile-focused announcement.” The invitation sent to members of the news media says, “Come see our new home on Android.”

For Facebook and any other online business that is supported by ads, mobile is a tough puzzle to crack. It is difficult to get people to look at advertisements on smaller screens, where display space is limited, without becoming too intrusive.

Facebook’s business strategy is to persuade people to congregate around its social network as much as possible and eventually show them more ads. That is why, over the last year, Facebook has been revamping its organization to be “mobile first.” Every team at Facebook is involved somehow in its mobile products. And the company has recruited engineers who specialize in mobile phone development, including former Apple employees who worked on the development of the iPhone.

The Facebook employee familiar with the announcement said that when the Facebook phone is turned on, it will immediately display a Facebook user’s home screen. A phone with a strong Facebook focus would prompt customers to use Facebook more than competing apps and services. But the success of such a device would depend on how much support the handset received from wireless carriers, said Chetan Sharma, an independent telecommunications analyst who consults for carriers. The carriers can choose which devices are sold in their stores, as well as how prominently to promote them.

“Unless the phone is in front of the consumers in stores, it’s hard to see how it will gain traction,” Mr. Sharma said.

He said it was difficult to imagine that big carriers like AT&T and Verizon Wireless would place a serious bet on a Facebook phone from HTC, because that manufacturer’s other phones have not been selling very well. HTC once made a phone called the Cha Cha that had a button for posting photos directly to Facebook, but it sold poorly.

The idea of a Facebook-powered Android phone is not new. In 2008, Inq, a phone maker based in London, released a phone called the Inq1 that integrated Facebook services into crucial areas of the device. In 2011, it said it would release an Android phone called the Inq Cloud Touch, which had some of Facebook’s services integrated into the home screen.

But early last year, Inq pulled the plug on theCloud Touch, saying it would instead focus on other products. Frank Meehan, the former chief executive of Inq, said in an e-mail interview that the Inq had felt too threatened by Samsung Electronics, now the biggest maker of phones in the world, so it abandoned its plans.

“Samsung was already on a path to crush everyone, and we decided to get out of hardware and turned the company into software only,” Mr. Meehan said.

Mr. Meehan said that if HTC released an Android phone with a focus on Facebook, it would still face the problem that Samsung is the dominant player on Android, Sony is gaining traction in mobile and Huawei, a Chinese handset maker, is dominant in Asia. He said it would be better for Facebook to create a special layer that consumers could install on Android devices so the social network would embed more deeply into Android apps and Google services.

“I would see this as a more radical way of providing the social layer functionality on mobile that would really bring the power of Facebook to Android,” he said.

The Facebook employee familiar with plans for the new phone said the stand-alone mobile apps it released over the last two and a half years were essentially experiments to see what worked on mobile devices before rolling them into a Facebook-focused Android phone. This year the company introduced Poke, a private messaging service, as a stand-alone app. Last year, it released a camera app that specialized in tagging and uploading photos to Facebook. In 2011, it introduced Messenger, an app for free text messaging, which was later expanded to include free voice calls.

Facebook has been exploring making its own smartphone for the last two years. But the project, which was at one time code-named “Buffy,” had stalled because the company could not decide whether to make its own hardware or team up with a phone maker.

Facebook’s approach to modifying Google’s Android software is similar to Amazon’s, said a former employee of Facebook who had been briefed on the product. For its Kindle Fire tablets, Amazon removed Google’s apps and promoted its own services, like the Kindle e-book store, Amazon’s video service and Amazon’s own app store. The tablet is essentially an Amazon-powered shopping console.

A smartphone that gives priority to Facebook services is good for Facebook, but it is unclear whether that is something consumers want. Jan Dawson, a telecommunications analyst at Ovum, said the concept was “a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist.”

“There are lots of people who love Facebook, but I doubt if any of them feel like they need a more Facebook-centric experience on their phones,” he said. “There isn’t anything obviously missing.”

He agreed that it was unlikely that wireless companies would put much support behind such a device, because they are already worried about the way Google and Facebook are supplanting carriers in people’s minds as providers of content and communication services.

Microsoft's move to relax the minimum resolution for Windows 8 devices could trigger a slew of seven-inch Windows 8 tablets.

An update to Microsoft's Windows Certification Newsletter, uncovered by Ed Bott of sister site ZDNet announced the change in the required resolution for Windows 8 tablets.

To claim Windows 8 certification, a tablet can now offer a minimum resolution of 1,024x768 at a depth of 32 bits. That's a change from the previous guidelines, which specify a minimum resolution of 1,366x768. Microsoft said it isn't encouraging device makers to shoot for such a low resolution but noted that "partners exploring designs for certain markets could find greater design flexibility helpful."

Tablets with screens larger than seven inches typically offer a resolution much higher than 1,024x768. In contrast, smaller tablets naturally tend to use use smaller resolutions. Google's Nexus 7 and Amazon's Kindle Fire both offer resolutions of 1,280x800, while Apple's current iPad Mini is stuck at 1,024x768.

Reading between the lines, Microsoft seems to be laying the groundwork for smaller Windows 8 tablets. That's a smart strategy given the popularity of seven-inch tablets.

Apple's iPad Mini has scooped up sales from its larger Retina Display counterpart. Smaller Android tablets such as the Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire have helped Google's mobile OS steal more of the market away from the iPad. It seems time for Microsoft and its partners to carve out a slice of all that seven-inch tablet action.

A resolution of 1,024x768 does offer one problem in the world of Windows 8.

The snap app feature, which lets users snap two Modern apps side by side, requires a resolution of 1,366x768. Therefore, any tablet vendors who sell 1,024x768 Windows 8 devices must alert potential buyers that the snap app feature won't work, at least not without an external display.

But the upcoming Windows Blue may offer a solution to this dilemma.

Microsoft is reportedly tweaking the snap app feature to let 1,024x768 devices display two apps side by side, says The Verge. Devices with higher resolution would be able to display four apps next to one another.

Apple will unveil its next iPhone on June 20 and kick off sales in July. At least, that's the claim from Japanese Mac enthusiast site MacFan.

Marking its 20th anniversary as a Mac-oriented Web site, MacFan suggests that the next-generation iPhone will take the stage at a Apple event on Thursday, June 20. The new iPhone will then go on sale a few weeks later in early July, as reported by Electronista.

The report further claims that Apple will launch the much-rumored low-cost iPhone in August and target it as a pre-paid device for developing markets such as China and India.

Electronista dubs the rumor plausible but doesn't indicate where or how MacFan got its information.

A June or July launch timeframe for the iPhone 5S has been proposed by other Apple watchers and even a couple of analysts. Apple did release the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G, 3GS, and 4 during the June and July period and only switched to fall for the iPhone 4S and 5.

How does MacFan's claims stack up with other recent rumors?

Apple analyst Gene Munster expects the iPhone 5S to launch in late June, followed by the low-cost model in the September quarter.
KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes Apple will announce the next iPhone in Juneand offer it for sale in July.
Japanese Apple blog Macotakara said earlier this month that production of the next iPhone had already gotten off the ground.

MacFan's report does echo those of other sources, though it's gone farther out on the limb by suggesting a specific launch date. And like most rumors, that one should be taken with a grain of salt.

A June 20 event would come hot on the heels of Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, which typically runs throughout the second week of the month. In the past, Apple actually used WWDC to announce new iPhone models, including the iPhone 4, 3GS, and 3. So, if Apple returns to a June iPhone launch, an announcement during this year's WWDC seems the more likely timeframe.

Whatever the date, a summer debut for the next iPhone could be a good strategic move on Apple's part.

Apple launched the iPhone 5 last September in large part to end its September quarter with a bang.

But the company then proceeded to unveil a new iPad, the iPad Mini, a new iPod Touch, and other refreshed products in October. If Apple continues to stack all its product launches in the fall, it leaves the company with little to announce the other three quarters of any given year.

Apple could generate even more attention for its new products if it spaces out the launches throughout the year, in essence a return to its older strategy.

It's pretty obvious that Apple overpriced the 13.3-inch Retina MacBook Pro by a long shot.

The 13.3-inch Retina MacBook Pro has plunged to $1,299 at one retailer, a whopping $400 off its original price.

The model debuted at $1,699 in October. But it didn't take long for Apple to cut the price to $1,499 in February after widespread discounting from retailers such as Best Buy, Fry's Electronics, and MacMall.

What gives? While the higher-cost 13.3-inch Retina display is stunning, there isn't much more about the model that's mind blowing enough to warrant such a high price.It's obvious now that the original pricing on the Retina MBP was a miscalculation by Apple. And the additional $200 discount at MacConnection may indicate that $1,499 may still be too high.

For instance, it's not particularly lightweight at about 3.6 pounds. And while its mainstream Core i5 processor is faster than the MacBook Air's power-efficient variety, the silicon doesn't scream like the 15.4-inch Retina MacBook Pro (which combines a quad-core Core i7 with Nvidia GeForce GT 650M graphics). At 128GB, the 13.3 MBP's solid-state drive storage is average too.

Then there's the matter of Google's Chromebook Pixel, which bests the MBP in a few key areas: it has higher pixel density (239 pixels per inch versus the MBP's 227), has a touch screen, and can be configured with internal 4G.

And the base Pixel model is priced at $1,299.

But that doesn't mean the Pixel is jumping off the shelf either. The 64GB model with 4G/LTE is priced at $1,449, only a little less than the base 128GB 13 Retina MBP as sold by Apple.

Google's Chromebook Pixel has trumped the 13.3-inch Retina MacBook Pro in some key hardware metrics.

AT&T said today it would begin taking pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy S4, which it is pricing at $249.99 with a two-year contract.

Eager customers can place their order starting April 16. AT&T hasn't yet announced when the smartphone would actually hit stores, and a representative declined to provide a specific date.

The $249.99 price tag is slightly higher than the standard flagship phone, which typically retails at $199.99. But Samsung and its carrier partners are hoping that the Galaxy brand, the improved specifications, and the strong buzz behind the product will drive sales. AT&T confirmed that the $249.99 price is for the 16GB base model.

The Galaxy S4 is expected to be the big seller early in the year ahead of the launch of the next iPhone. Still, the phone faces improved competition from the likes of the HTC One, as well as a big marketing campaign from BlackBerry and its Z10 and Q10 phones.

While AT&T is mum about the launch date, T-Mobile Chief Marketing Officer Mike Sievert said that its Galaxy S4 will launch on or before May 1.

Your iPhone of the future may come with a clear glass body and a display that wraps all the way around.
Published today by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the patent application known simply as "Electronic device with wrap around display" highlights a phone or other electronic device that dispenses with the current flat design in favor of something much more flexible.

The display itself would unwind, or unroll, around the device to reveal a wider array of items. As a result, more space would be available to display icons, photos, videos, and other content.
Users would interact with the device using touch gestures rather than physical buttons. For example, swiping along one of the sides could lock and unlock the device as an alternative to using the current hold button. That innovation would've pleased the late Steve Jobs, who always envisioned an iPhone without any physical buttons.

The body itself could be made of glass, which would offer transparency and be strong enough to support the entire device.

The patent filing points out one potential pitfall. If the display wraps around the entire device, how would the phone figure out the location of the user? The device would use cameras and facial recognition technology to track the position and movement of the user's face and adjust the display in response.

Offering a touch of 3D, the device could even include two flexible displays, one on top of the other. The same content would appear on both displays but would be slightly out of phase on one display versus the other. "In this way, an illusion of depth perception can be presented mimicking a 3D experience," the patent explained.
Flexible displays have been on Apple's mind for while. The company filed for the "Electronic device with wrap around display" patent in 2011 and filed a similar patent called "Electronic Devices With Flexible Displays" last year.

A bendable, flexible display is hardly a new concept in the tech field. But if Apple's patents are approved and the company actually uses the technology, the iPhone could once again outshine its smartphone rivals as a more innovative device.

But Apple better not sit still. Competitors such as Samsung, LG, and Nokia have already demoed their own flexible screens for mobile devices. Samsung is reportedly moving forward on mass production of such displays for release in the first half of 2013, according to a Wall Street Journal story published last November.

T-Mobile shook up the wireless industry this week with the introduction of its new no-contract service plans. But is the service really a good value for consumers compared to what the other big guys are offering?

In this edition of My Blog, I answer that very question. A reader wants to know if he should ditch Verizon's wireless service for T-Mobile. While some people seem to balk at the notion that wireless consumers will have to "pay"for their smartphones under these new T-Mobile plans, I do the math to explain why even buying a device at full price on T-Mobile is still a better deal than a Verizon subsidized two-year contract.
And for another reader, I clarify some of the finer points of T-Mobile's device financing program.

T-Mobile vs. Verizon Wireless

I am a Verizon Wireless subscriber whose contract is up later this year. But I am considering switching to T-Mobile since they announced their new plans. I live in the Washington, D.C. area so I'd be one of the first markets to get T-Mobile's LTE. From a value standpoint, would you recommend T-Mobile or would you recommend I continue to stick with Verizon?

The short answer to your question is that I think T-Mobile's new service plans are a terrific deal compared with what the other nationwide carriers are offering. Still, to be fair, I must point out that T-Mobile's CEO John Legere may have exaggerated his claim that consumers will save $1,000 over two years with T-Mobile's plans compared to a plan on a competitor. As I will explain in this column, when comparing similar plans, the cost difference isn't that great. But it's significant.

T-Mobile executives claim that consumers can save big bucks with new T-Mobile's new contractless service plans when compared to services from competitors.

But there is a caveat. It's only a great value if the service works where you live, work, and travel. So the first thing you need to do is ask your friends, family, and colleagues who use T-Mobile how they like the service. As far as I know, T-Mobile has pretty decent service in the Washington, D.C. area. And you are correct that D.C. is among the first cities to get the T-Mobile's new LTE service. So that is good news for you.

I also know that if you travel outside of Washington, D.C. in some areas, you may not get such great service or any service at all. In that instance, it doesn't matter how much money you can save with T-Mobile's new plan. It's not a good deal if can't make or receive phone calls or update your Facebook page when you are out of town for a weekend.

But let's assume, that most of the places where you travel in and around D.C. and other parts of the country get decent T-Mobile coverage. If that's the case, I don't see any reason why you shouldn't switch right now.

Before I go further, let me just preface this by saying that I don't know how much you currently pay for your Verizon Wireless service, since you didn't indicate that in your question. So as I run the numbers and compare the services, I am going to compare T-Mobile's new plan with Verizon's current plans that it sells to new wireless customers. If you have a different plan, you will have to compare the pricing yourself to see how much money you could save.

The comparison

T-Mobile's plans start at $50 a month for unlimited voice and text messaging service. At that price you get 500MB of data at full 3G/4G speeds. If you exceed 500MB of data in a month, you aren't charged an overage fee. But the speed of your service will be slowed until the beginning of the next billing cycle.
Meanwhile, the least expensive service from Verizon is $90 per month ($50 for 1GB of data and $40 for a smartphone.) If you exceed the 1GB of data in your plan, you will be charged overage fees. Overage fees start at $10 for 1GB of data.

But let's compare apples to apples and see what the price difference is between the two services. Let's say you want at least 2GB of data at full 3G/4G speed. On T-Mobile's new plan that service will cost you $60 a month. Verizon's service is $100 for 2GB of data ($60 for 2GB of data and a $40 smartphone fee.)

The difference in cost between these two plans is $40 per month. In one year, you will save $480 on the T-Mobile plan. (If you're willing to live with 500MB plan and possibly get slower service when exceed 500MB of data, you could save $600 in one year.)

Of course, this comparison does not account for the fact that you need a phone that can operate on T-Mobile's network. Verizon uses different technology for its voice services, which are not compatible with T-Mobile, so your old Verizon phone won't work on T-Mobile.

As we compare the cost of adding a new T-Mobile device into the mix, let's assume that you would upgrade your device on Verizon too. And I'll use the iPhone 5 as an example.

T-Mobile If you buy a new iPhone 5 from T-Mobile, you can either pay full price for the phone when you sign up for service, or you can pay for the device in monthly installments over 24 months. If you pay over 24 months, you will tack on another $20 a month to your service. But in reality, it doesn't matter whether you pay for the device upfront or if you pay for it over 24 months. The cost of the device will be the same, since T-Mobile is offering zero percent financing.

Let's say that you want the 2GB data service from T-Mobile and the 16GB iPhone 5. The cost of the phone is $580. And the service fee is $60 per month. Over two years, you will have paid $2,020 for the iPhone 5 on T-Mobile's 2GB plan.

Verizon A brand new 16GB iPhone 5 on Verizon costs $200 if you agree to a two-year contract. The 2GB service is $100 per month. This means that over two years, which is the standard contract period, the total cost of ownership on Verizon is $2,600.

The result: In just two years, you will be saving $580 by using T-Mobile instead of Verizon. But the savings don't stop there. Regardless of whether you financed the iPhone over 24 months or you paid for it in full when you bought it, after two years, the device is paid for. And you are no longer paying your carrier for the device.

Bottom line

When you compare the total cost of ownership between the two carriers, it's easy to see that you will save hundreds of dollars with T-Mobile over the course of a typical two-year contract.
I think some people are confused by the fact that T-Mobile is requiring customers to pay for their phones. But the reality is that every carrier makes its customers pay the full price of their phones and then some. You may only be paying $100 or $200 for a new phone when you sign your contract. But over the life of your contract, you are paying for the device, since that cost of the carrier subsidy is bundled into the price of your monthly service. And if you leave your contract early, you are socked with a hefty early termination fee.

The biggest difference between T-Mobile's plan and the rest of the carriers is that with T-Mobile once you're done paying for your phone, your out-of-pocket expense goes down. Meanwhile, Verizon and other carriers that subsidize phones continue to charge the same service fees they charged when they were recouping the cost of the subsidy. What this means is that once you have paid back the cost of the subsidy, the portion of your monthly bill that had paid for that subsidy is now profit for the carrier.

What's more if you bring a device you already own to the network or you buy an unlocked device at full price to use on that network, you will pay the same monthly service charge as someone who bought a subsidized device.

I am the first person to admit that I don't trust wireless carriers. It always seems like they are trying to squeeze more cash out of their subscribers. But when I look at the new T-Mobile plans, I can honestly say that I don't think T-Mobile is cheating anyone.

The reality is that no carrier can afford to give devices away for free. That doesn't make good business sense. But the subsidy model that we're all used to in the U.S. only encourages customers to tie themselves to two-year contracts. And it penalizes customers who either want to keep an existing device once their contracts expire or want to buy unlocked devices at full price. Meanwhile, T-Mobile's plans will encourage people to either keep their devices longer or search for the best deals on new phones. And as a savvy bargain hunter and self-professed cheapskate, I think that's great.
The only reason that I am not signing up for one of T-Mobile's new plans right now is because its service isn't available everywhere I travel. If it were, I'd be first in line for this service.

Is T-Mobile's device financing flexible?

I am pretty excited about T-mobile's new service plans. I have been a long time prepaid customer with Virgin Mobile but have long been disappointed with the selection of phones they offer as well as those phones being locked to Virgin. What T-mobile has come up with in my view is a good compromise between pre and post paid payment models.

That said, I am still confused about a couple things regarding the cost of the phones. It appears that T-mobile allows you to either pay full price for the device and forgo any monthly payment, or you can pay a low upfront cost with payments broken up over the course of two years.

My question is will T-Mobile allow you to either lower the payment or lesson the term by paying more upfront? For instance could I pay $250 for a Blackberry Z10 instead of $100 to lower my monthly payment or to have a shorter payment term on the phone? Also, will Tmobile allow customers to pay off phone sooner than two years all at once if they so desire?

You can put more money down when you sign up for the service, but T-Mobile will not allow you to reduce the monthly payment.

That is a set price depending on the device you buy, a T-Mobile spokesman told me. That said, if you increase the down payment, you will pay off the device in a shorter period of time. As an example, if the BlackBerry Z10 costs $580, and you put $250 down, you'd pay the regular $20 a month fee to T-Mobile for 16.5 months instead of 24 months.
Also, you are free to pay off the balance on the device at any time during the finance period. In other words, let's say you put $100 down when you bought the phone, you could pay the remaining $480 anytime you like and there is no penalty.

That may sound like the existing con, but it’s different in a few big ways. You pay only what the phone really costs. You don’t pay interest, and you stop paying when you’ve paid for the phone.

T-Mobile doesn’t care what phone you use, either; if it works on T-Mobile’s network, you can use it. And why not? Would you buy a car that uses only one brand of gas?

Yet another radical change: There are no more yearly contracts at T-Mobile. You can leave at any time. “If we suck this month, drop us,” said Legere. “Go somewhere else.”

Plus, Verizon and AT&T don’t offer the “unlimited slower Internet” option after you’ve eaten up your monthly data allotment. Instead, they just slap you with a steep per-gigabyte overage fee, $15 a gigabyte.

And in what may be the biggest, best news of all: T-Mobile is the first major carrier to eliminate the ridiculous, unnecessary, airtime-eating, 15 seconds of prerecorded instructions that you hear when you want to leave a message. When you call a T-Mobile customer, you go right to the beep.

If T-Mobile’s crazy, way-out plan succeeds, those practices may just go away.

The Q10 will be available on a two year contract for £36 per month or SIM-free for £579.95.

The 4G-enabled smartphone will be available on all major networks from the end of April.

The smartphone is a return to the popular full QWERTY keyboard after the touchscreen Z10 in January.

The company, which changed its name to BlackBerry from Research in Motion, announced a figure of one million Z10 sales last month.

The company has pinned its hopes on the Z10 and Q10 in the face of competition from Samsung and Apple. The Q10 is the second of two handsets that will use the BB10 operating system.

The device has the keyboard that was the foundation for much of BlackBerry’s growth among professionals who found it useful for writing emails and documents.

The company confounded expectations on Wall Street and posted a $114 million (£75 million) profit in March for the last financial year.

However, Samsung’s profit announcement today of £5.1bn in the first quarter of 2013 provided a reminder of the gulf between BlackBerry and the world’s biggest smartphone manufacturer.
