"GARMIN CADENCE SENSOR" 2010-06-01

So far it works great.

Had to readjust a couple times to get both the cadence and the speed sensors to work. Actually had to turn the sensing unit upside down to best pick them up. However, not very mechanically inclined, so take the difficulty as mostly user error.

Purchased it mainly to track workouts on my indoor trainer during the winter. However, have used the cadence info on my outside rides more than expected to target training zones.

It felt like it took forever to get here, ship time was over the high end of the estimate. But that was a temporary inconvenience that does not reflect on the product.

I'm a big and long time fan of Garmin fitness equipment. I have 2 Forerunner 305's, an Edge 305 and a 310XT. I love' em all. I love both forms of heartrate straps. I'm very happy with the new version of Garmin Connect that is a great free service. Garmin is also excellent with customer service.

On the other hand this cadence device is the worst piece of Garmin equipment I have ever experienced. I bought two as I can move the Edge 305 between bikes. Set up is not all that difficult. The problem is keeping the things working. The longest I've been able to get one to work is a month and I've had two for going on two years.

Lately even with new batteries I can get the green light that checks to make sure that the magnet on the crank arm is making magenetic contact with the unit to flash when the bike is in the stand but not when I'm actually riding the bike. Keep in mind you use 2032's and those batteries get expensive to switch out every month. I could see if only one was having issues but both are and so I'm thinking design issues are at play.

The only thing I can say positive about this unit is that since it has worked so rarely that I have developed my own sense of cadence so I really don't need it. On the other hand I'm a gearhead (just in case you couldn't tell) and it drives me nuts that I've paid good money for these things and they simply don't work worth a damn.

Save your money and take a pass until Garmin redesigns this unit.

"Faulty Unit, Be Aware for Bad Manufacturing" 2010-05-10

Unfortunately, as Garmin has expanded their quality control has been poor. While I believe this has the potential to be a good product, I purchased two of these units for my bike and my wife's. One of them came with an almost dead battery and a dead speed sensor (although the cadence works well). I am not the only person with this issue as the garmin support forums have had several people complain of this issue. Replacing the unit through G has been difficult as well. Their call center is slow and overwhelmed.

The second unit works perfectly as expected, and provides what is advertised. The unit seamlessly pairs with both my forerunner 310xt and my wife's forerunner 405.

So, while the product itself, if it worked w/o problem I would rate as a 4, the QC issues and issues with Garmin Customer Support make the GSC (which I am otherwise a fan of) a 2 star rating.

I mounted the Garmiin GSC 10 Speed/Cadence Bike Sensor on my Specialized Epic Comp. Installation of the unit itself was easy, but I did have to add a rubber shim when I mounted the magnet to my crankarm to get it close enough for it to read from to the sensor. After the installation was complete and I sinked it to my Garmin forerunner 305 everything works flawlessly.

This is a unit I bought for another bike, I have found them to be reliable and easy to install. They can be broken if a rock or something hits them but that would be expected.

"OK, but" 2010-06-02

Works just ok, when it works.
What I've found though, is that it doesn't always pick up the satellites. Doesn't matter if I"m in a big city or not, it's hang for 10-20 minutes. Very frustrating when you're getting ready to leave and you have to wait for the thing to connect.
The other problem I have with this is, for French, it's not great.

I went to Quebec recently, and it didn't recognize a number of streets. I typed in St. and Saint, and got nothing. I also put in a major street and address and was routed to the wrong side of the island. Was pretty much useless while in Montreal.

After my experience with the Nuvi, I'd try other brands just to see the difference, maybe this is the best of the lot relatively. I'm commenting on my frustrations and experience with this model/brand.

I bought this as a gift for my husband, who loves new gadgets. This one has worked very well for trips into unfamiliar territory, helping find services as well as routes. We will be using it a lot this summer and beyond. A very worthwhile gadget.

"WOW! Great price with voice recognition." 2010-05-23

This unit like my previous Nuvi 760 is easy to use. Nice menu. The voice recognition is the reason I got this unit. It wowed the wife and kids. It is intuitive and we used it after reading the basic start up manual it came with. It recognizes anyone's voice easily, but other people have to be quiet or it can get confused and listen to their command. You need to give it a second before speaking, it gives you a green prompt symbol to speak. The remote mounted to the steering wheel activates it, but it turns off voice command after a few seconds, sometimes too quickly. But it can be re activated again. It is faster to use the touch screen, but nice to have a hands free option when you need it. I still have some locations that don't show up on it. How many years does it take to update? I got the garmin also because of it's accuracy. I thought of Tom Tom, because of driver updates that help calculate the best practical route instead of the best computer programed route because it is 0.3 miles shorter. And to get places that are not on GPS units yet. It is pretty accurate. This unit is slower to calculate the route than my previous garmin. The voice is loud enough. I could hear it even in a heavy rain storm, just enough. I wish Garmin had a system like TomTom to update real time driver routes and times taken by real people that take into account the actual time it takes to get there including traffic lights, stop signs etc. and routes that are practical. This is a common problem with most GPS units. Tom Tom seems to have addressed this issue, so I may try a Tom Tom next time. Over all I am happy with this unit. It seems a little cheaper in quality of build than my old 760, but the price is much less, so I don't mind, as long as it lasts a couple of years. Still relatively cheaper than updating the maps in the old GPS. Would be nice if this unit had a radio transmitter. My 760 speaker stopped working, so now I transmit to my radio when I need to hear the GPS. Blue tooth on my 760 was too choopy and noisy, so I didn't get one with blue tooth this time to save money. If they improve the blue-tooth connection it would be worth getting. Have not used other features yet. Over all, nice unit for the price. It will get you where you want to go. Also, it has some nice video games that are fun to play that are not listed in the specs. Nice bonus.

We had a 2 year old model and loved it. Unfortunately it was stolen. This new voice recognition model is simply outstanding and reasonably priced at $158. Voice recognition makes the GPS much more safe, simple and easy to program.

The bright, 4.3-inch touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views. The widescreen format gives you 70 percent more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. The nüvi 755T comes preloaded with highly detailed City Navigator NT road maps from Navteq for the entire United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. This map database features nearly six million points of interest (POIs), including hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and attractions. Garmin's interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip.

Garmin's patent pending theft prevention system that disables the unit from performing any functions until the user types in a specific 4-digit PIN or takes the unit to a predetermined secure location.

Important Product Information: This device features a "screen lock" feature. This is a standard feature on all nüvi 2x5 and 7x5 Garmin units. If you slide the "Power" key to the right, it will lock the screen and prevent any accidental touches. Once the screen lock feature is engaged, the screen will go black/gray after about 15 seconds to save power on the device. To unlock the screen, just slide the "Power" key to the center position. This feature is really targeted for "Pedestrian" mode so that a user can put the device in his or her pocket/purse and quickly unlock the screen instead of powering on/off continuously. HotFix Satellite Prediciton
Garmin's HotFix capability automatically calculates and stores satellite locations, greatly reducing satellite acquisition time so that you can turn the unit on and get going. With HotFix, your nüvi remembers the position of all satellites it is tracking when you turn it off, and calculates their movements in order to predict where they should be the next time you turn it on. HotFix can predict satellite positions for up to 3 days after the device was last turned off.

Multi-Destination Routing
This lets you enter several spots into the device (day care - supermarket-cleaners - office - day care, for example) and it will plot the fastest route. I'll be honest.....I researched GPS devices for over six weeks before deciding to purchase this Garmin model (nuvi 755). I honestly believe my research paid off, and after a month of use, including a cross-country trip, the device has performed beyond my expectations.

There are already plenty of reviews espousing the performance highlights of the nuvi 755, so I will not waste your time by repeating those. With the caveat that I'm extremely pleased with the device and purchase, please allow me to discuss a couple of the 'not so good' aspects of the device. To reiterate, none of these minor problems are show-stoppers.

MINOR PROBLEM #1: When the device arrived, and I read the instructions, I learned I was authorized 'one' map update. I immediately proceeded to the Garmin website to take advantage of this free service. There were two options for obtaining the update: 1. You could download an extremely large file from Garmin (taking hours to download), or, 2. You could request a CD (or other media) and have the map update mailed to you. I chose the CD option. Unfortunately, the CD option costs $10, and after the charge showed up as 'pending' on my credit card, the charge never went through, there was no explanation from Garmin for the transaction never going through, and I'm still waiting for the map update. I can only speculate on the reasons for the delay. I have not tried to resolve the matter because I have completed my initial extensive use of the device (a cross-country trip), and it's not urgent.

MINOR PROBLEM #2: While researching the various Garmin products, it was difficult to determine which accessories were included in the purchase, and which non-inclusive accessories perhaps 'should' be purchased for immediate use. For example, I did not know the device's internal battery could be recharged by attaching it to your desktop computer. Hence, I purchased a separate AC charging device (total cost of less than $10). I later found out it was not necessary for me to purchase the charging device, although in retrospect, I'm glad I did, since another vendor was selling the AC charging device for less than half the cost that Amazon was offering!

MINOR PROBLEM #3: The device is easy to handle, but due to its size and fragile internal electronic components, it is also EASY to accidentally drop it on a hard surface, and inadvertently destroy your investment. I believe Garmin needs to offer a low-cost cover that will allow customers to handle/use the device, while providing some protection from accidentally dropping it on the ground. A competing vendor has an after-market product that seems to perform this protection function. Unfortunately, it sells for $20 (which is more than 11% of the total cost of the nuvi), but is possibly well-worth the additional charge.

In conclusion, this is an excellent product, and I believe it's an excellent value. I encourage commentary on the minor problems I have discussed.

This is my second Garmin and I have to say I love this GPS. Garmin uses the same format as the first unit, but with many more features. I know this is a small issue, but I also have a Tom Tom 730. When you reach your location with the Garmin 755t tells you which side of the street your looking for. This is not the case with the Tom Tom. Along with this the 730 seem to be more accurate in being right on when an address is given.

I'm not a stranger to the Nuvi having already owned a 150W, so I expected the 755T to work just as well. Since I live in a heavily congested area here on Long Island, I was very intrigued on whether the traffic feature would help avoid traffic problems. On my very first trip with the 755T to upstate NY, the device warned me of a major slowdown on the Long Island Expressway and guided me around the problem. Throughout the trip the device was flawless with it's directions and warnings and I couldn't be more pleased. One comment I might make is that software and map updates from the Garmin website can ve very slow. When I registered the device with Garmin, I noticed that a map and software upgrade was available and decided to upgrade the software first. After almost three hours I called customer service and after talking with the technician got the device fully upgraded with new software in about five minutes. However, I could not have known about the abbreviated procedure without calling Garmin. Their technicians are excellent and before any upgrades are attempted, you should call Garmin first.

1. Garmin still hasn't made custom or scenic routing easy. You need a friend with a civil engineering degree at FEMA or the Forestry Service to use the software.
2. Cumbersome to get back on a pre-planned scenic route if any detour is taken.
3. Garmin's initial software update and map upload still takes a dedicated day and usually a call to Customer Support.
4. The device can only be plugged into DC with the mounting adapter attached. Very cumbersome and is apparently designed so that the fragile connector doesn't render the entire device useless when it breaks.
5. Since it can only be charged with the mounting adapter attached, it cannot be charged inside any of the slip-in cases that fit properly.
6. Touch screen not as good as the older StreetPilot c550.
7. Audio-out gets confused when switching from the audio cable to internal speaker.
8. FM-out is poor quality and not level.
9. Surprised that map detail was very poor when traveling cross country and don't know why there's more local detail than when I'm a thousand miles away.

"OK GPS, but don't buy a GPS without Traffic reports!" 2010-05-21

This Garmin has sent me and my clients on interesting, unintended, illogical and time consuming jaunts, some of them due to newer construction, (especially around the Mixing Bowl in northern Virginia), but some are just odd and I don't catch them in time because I am not paying attention to the route due to my talking with my clients. Don't rely on it to be right more than 98% of the time and when it is wrong it is mystifyingly, capriciously, wrong.
And it doesn't have traffic reports so I have to have my Iphone in one hand to check for backed up traffic and watch the GPS on its mount while trying to keep from tailending the car in front of me. Get a GPS with traffic reports, they are worth it!

This is my first gps and everything about this was easy. No problem to figure out. It's just to bad they don't include the cable hook up for the computer because you have to hook it to the computer in order to register and get your free map update. Lucky I had a camera cable that fit and worked.

I bought this along with my Garmin Nuvi 255W and love them both. The friction mount is an awesome device as it allows you to mount the Garmin screen to it and set it on your dashboard. It has a heavy bottom so tipping or sliding is not an issue. It stays in place wherever you put it. I like it so much better than the suction cup mount to the windshield. It also moves and pivots with ease, so it is never a strain to see what is on the screen. I highly recommend it as a necessary accessory to your Garmin GPS unit. Don't leave home without it!

So I live in off-campus housing for school, and my car is usually parked in a parking garage for a better part of the month. The problem with having the little suction cup is that if its still there even with out the GPS, there is a risk of it being stolen (theft is a very common occurrence on a college campus). Then taking it off becomes a hassle, since well A) there is a residue on the windshield and B) the hope that successive reapplications of the suction cup will actually hold after the suction cup has either collected dust or become brittle.

The solution? Well this friction mount works really well. At first I though perhaps it would slip off, but the rubber mount and the weight (little bean bag weights) hold it down firm. I don't have to worry about the windshield residue or even taking something off my windshield anymore. All I do is park my car, take off my GPS and take it with me (I never leave it in my car) and then take the mount and stuff it just in front of the passenger's seat. Works perfectly!

The only complaints I have is that its a little bulky but often times it is still possible to hide. Also, the constant removal from the dash to the floor does get some dust underneath so you have to brush it off every now and then.

All in all, very useful product. As long as you're not making sudden turns (and I mean like practically drifting) then this thing will just stay in place. I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking to replace that annoying suction cup on the windshield.

"Doesn't budge" 2010-05-17

I tested this in two different vehicles over 4 or 5 days and it didn't budge in either vehicle. Good marks for stability. If you've only used suction cup windshield mounts before with a GPS this product puts the GPS a lot closer to you, so you won't need to lean forward. Also, since it doesn't use a suction cup anywhere in the design of the product, this product will never drop your GPS on a hot day!

I wasn't thrilled with the cost, it seems a touch high for a beanbag and a plastic arm, but now I see that the arm mates to an adjustable pivot in the base and it is pretty well engineered.

Overall, this one is a keeper!

The GPS did a good job finding where I was and recalculating quickly. It did sometimes take me off of main roads to side roads, which I still don't understand. Thankfully it doesn't happen often. The system is quick and easy to use, but yet not always intuitive. I have not yet found out how to display additional attributes on the map screen, that I was accustomed to from a model from another manufacturer. I like this system, and what is important to me is it's quick recalculation as I often travel in and out of congested areas and need quick mapping.

I don't know why I never bought a GPS system until now!

Right out of the box it worked like a charm. So easy to set up and use. I haven't used the "traffic" feature yet so I don't haven an opinion.

I was researching all types of these systems over the last couple of months. It can be a bit intimidating just how many there are. But after careful research... reading over customer reviews, professional reviews, I feel I picked the best one.

**When it did arrive by UPS however, the box was just about squashed into a mess. I was afraid to even start the GPS thinking that it was damaged during the delivery. I don't think the driver was expecting me to come to the door as it looked like he was just going to leave it and run. I had paid for a RUSH delivery, it arrived on time, but was surprised I didn't have to sign for it. What's up with that?

i previously had a magellan 4250 but the power connection socket broke so i decided to try another manufacturer.

the pros:
the screen is vivid and clear, the maps are much better quality and provides better navigation instructions.

the cons:
as others have mentioned, does not allow the input of zipcodes (ie: slows you down), the look up of info is very slow. i typed toys r us and it took about 30 seconds for the unit to respond (bad reception in DC?). the touch screen buttons are too small so prone to input mistakes (ie: slows you down). even worse, the unit freezes about 1 second after each character you input (perhaps my unit is defictive). finally, the nuvi couldn't find IKEA. perhaps it was having a bad day so will try IKEA again (i know the location, but am still trying out the unit to compare it with the magellan). so after about a month of use, not very happy at all.

I have used and owned many Garmin units, both aviation and automotive, and have always been impressed until I bought the Nuvi 765T. My last car unit was a C340 and it was great for its time. When I decided to upgrade to a unit with bluetooth and traffic that would acquire faster, I chose the 765T. The features, screen and acquisition speed are just what I expected. The inability to calculate a route quickly or accurately was totally disappointing. Matters got even worse when I contacted Garmin Customer Support. After 3 emails and 3 agonizing waits on hold (each hold was more than 30 minutes, even when calling right when they open) I was told the unit needed to be RMA'd. When the RMA'd unit still would not calculate a complete route (always hung at 99% no matter where the beginning or end) Garmin customer support gave up and never returned another email. I have since given up on Garmin. I bought a Magellan Maestro 4700 and it is working better than expected.

I can not express how disappointed I am with both this 765T and the Garmin customer support. I would stay away from this unit, and possibly company, in hopes they will return to the company they once were.

This model was discontinued by Garmin, presumably because the included MSN traffic information service is to be discontinued in the near future.
I live in Argentina where such a service is not available anyway, but wanted to have a GPS capable of receiving such information in case the service gets deployed in the future, and this unit was cheaper than any other with similar features on Amazon.

The pros:
+ Bluetooth (yet to be tested, but an interesting feature to have)
+ The holder with suction cup to attach to the windshield (the GPS clips on it fast and reliably. Has never got detached)
+ Reliability (as long as the maps are accurate enough, it never got me to the wrong place)
+ Accuracy
+ The embeded software (intelligently zooms in and out the map view ehan you're approaching the next turn in your itinerary. Certainly a feature I didn't expect)
+ The screen size
+ The battery life (has lasted from 4 to five hours)
+ The USB port (the GPS works like a mass storage when attached to a PC. No drivers needed)
+ Easily upgradable (you can download Argentina maps for free at [...])
+ Ease of use

The cons:
- I can't get the GPS to show the name of every street in the map. no matter how much I zoom in or out.
- Everytime you switch it on, the unit takes several seconds to load the maps.
- Takes some time to locate the satellites every time you switch it on, but I guess this is a drawback of the technology itself.

Overall a good product by Garmin, which I would buy again.

Garmin makes a great GPS. This is no exception, this unit works very well. The MSN Direct is kind of a joke, it could not make up it,s mind weather or not if I was in heavy traffic or not.( I was in the middle of a traffic jam and it didn't know) This was in an area that the MSN web sight said they have a strong signal. All that I just told you doesn't matter anyway because MSN direct is shutting down in January 2011. All that aside, the 285w is a good unit, this one came with a data cable (some other units don't and you need it to update your map and update the firmware online. You get one free map update. Firmware is free anytime.

I love everthing about this GPS so far. I had a TomTom and i thought it was easy to use but this one is great. Only one thing i wish it would show is, it does not show you have far you have left to go on your destination. It shows only how far it is to your next turn. Other that I'm buying one more for the other car.

"Replaced my 755T" 2010-05-21

Just finished my first few hours with the 295W.

Just received the 295W today to replace the 755T that was unfortunately stolen. I was thinking about waiting for the 3790T or 3760T, but needed something before that becomes available.

** UNIT DIMENSIONS / FEEL / RESPONSE **
First impressions of the 295W are pretty good. Good fit and finish, has the right heft to it to where it does not have a "toy" feel. Fit and finish is nicer than the 755T I had. All functions process more quickly than the 755T did, and the touch screen is much more responsive. On my old unit, either the processor bogged down a bit, or the screen sensitivity was not quite there, but it did not respond like the 295W does. Scrolling with the touch screen is nice both in the menus, and in map view mode.

** ROUTING / DIRECTIONS **
The routing seemed faster than the 755T. I will miss the lane assist when I travel to larger cities like L.A. and Atlanta, but for the vast amount of time, it won't be a big deal. I did purposely take some wrong turns to check the rerouting capabilities, and found that to be very quick.

That said, it did have one hiccup already. ( i.e.- when chose Lowe's from the POI list, it showed it in two different directions, same address, 5 miles apart. There is only one Lowe's in my town, and it is not a divided highway or anything).

** UPLOADS **
I have not yet updated the map. It seems strange to have JUST released the unit, and the website suggests there is an updated map set available? I am going to see if I can figure out the version, and when the last one was released. Since I can upload over 60 days from initial use, I may wait a bit.

That said, I did upload some of the extra voices and vehicles that you can get from the Garmin site. It was quick, and seems to be just fine. ( By the way, I did have the problem upload with my prior 755T that made it a brick, and I had to send back and forth with Garmin.)

** WEB / WIRELESS **
Set up with my wireless network. Security settings were easy. The auto download weather is a neat feature, but I don't see myself carrying this around every day in and out of the house the way I probably would with GarminPhone. The Google Local Search worked well though. The pre-loaded POIs were very good I thought, but there were a couple places I figured it wouldn't know, and it didn't. Connected through the web though, it found them in 5 seconds, and then they were added to the unit saved places.

** OVERALL FIRST IMPRESSION **
After being used to the larger 755T screen, this seems a little bit small. Seems like I can't just glance as quickly at it as the prior unit, but maybe that will change with some time. The spoken directions seem a little bit clearer than the 755 was The response of the unit is very good in my opinion. Not sure how much I will really use the wireless, but I can see it handy traveling when I head to the hotel and might be looking for all the food options locally that the bas POI may not have, etc....

I am headed on a couple hundred mile drive over the next weekend and will see what other opinions arise. I know it's an initial review, but at least I don't have any buyer's remorse at this point. I may still wind up with a 7300 series after those arrive, and put this in the other vehicle, but we'll see.

**As for the packaging issues mentioned by the first poster, (who may just have wanted to be the first poster, since it certainly was not a PRODUCT review), I can say that while everything did arrive in fine shape, the stuff did just kind of seem tossed in the box. I felt it actually cheapened the Garmin brand to send it this way.

I just received my Nuvi 295t and I have to say that I like the concept. The 3.5 inch screen is not like having a 5" Nuvi 1490t but it's manageable especially when you have Web surfing and Google searches without the monthly plans. It works like a regular Nuvi with the addition of WIFI. I was able to drive to a Panera Bread and a Barnes and Noble and use their free WIFI to surf the web and use the Google Search feature. Now we are not limited by the 6 million POI database. The Google search option worked nicely finding POI's not found in the built-in database. Its identical to a Garminfone without the phone features. The Scrolling menu option was a nice add-on. Either the browser loads the pages a little slow or the CPU is weak but the web surfing is a little sluggish. The on screen qwerty keyboard is not the greatest but you can still input the URL's and other info.

I'll update this review once I use the 295 some more. I'll give my PRO's and CON's later tonight.

I would NEVER buy this product for one reason from Amazon, here's why;

It should come in the manufactures box which has all the items in plastic clam shell wrapped. Then that box should be placed in a well padded shipping container/box.

Here we go again, when is Amazon going to learn about damaged products and stop this craziness.

No packaging padding as shown in the pictures, NO protection against when UPS/FedX throws this box from the sort line into the bottom of a bin, which I can attest is several feet and will hit the hard surface HARD.

Frustration free packing?? For who Amazon? so they can speed orders out the door and pocket the extra profits. You know they have to pack boxes in 30 secs? Yup they get 30 secs to fold the box, tape it, put your stuff in it, and apply the printed label and get it onto the conveyor belt and then move on to the next picked order. I seen it recently on undercover boss, they even fired the guy who couldn't keep up with packing orders at that rate. No wonder Amazon is pushing frustration free packing, for themselves.

I only want items that are well packaged and protected from the harsh shipping hazards along the way.

Look at all the hard drive pictures on Amazon and how "Frustration free packing" ruined them.

Sorry I'll pass on getting this from Amazon.

Design
The 305's design is a radical departure from Garmin's previous generation of wrist mounted GPS devices, which reached a pinnacle with the Garmin Forerunner 301. While the 301 delivered accurate heart rate monitoring, good performance tracking, and decent GPS reception, it didn't quite deliver in the design department. The form factor was bulky and wearing it wasn't much different than duct taping a full-sized GPS device to your wrist.

Not so with the 305. Garmin's engineers obviously burned the midnight oil and have come up with a waterproof design that, while certainly not as small as a sports watch, feels just as comfortable. The curved casing allows the unit's antenna to face the sky when you're running, while the widescreen display is perfectly positioned for viewing when you need it. And the display certainly deserves a few kudos. While it's smaller than the display found on previous Forerunners, its resolution is far higher, offering incredible clarity and crispness.

Garmin has smartly given the 305 a simple button layout and the buttons have a nice tactile feel with good pressure response. The right side houses the menu selection and enter buttons, while the left houses a power/backlight button and a mode button. This simple and elegant solution is a big improvement over the sometimes confusing button functionality of previous Forerunners. View button layout.

The underside of the 305 is pretty nondescript, except for a row of contacts that interface with the included charging and data cradle. The cradle is small and unobtrusive and its single mini-USB port connects to either an included AC adapter, or a USB cable that connects to your PC. In addition to data transfer with the USB cable, you can also charge the 305's embedded lithium-ion battery via a powered USB connection from your computer.

GPS Performance
The big news about the Forerunner 305 is that it features an integrated, high-sensitivity SiRFstar III GPS receiver. What does this mean? It means that the 305's ability to both track, and maintain a lock on, your position is better than anything before it. After an intial battery charge, the tester had the 305 on his wrist and was tracking speed and distance with GPS satellites within 3 minutes. The next time we used the 305, satellite acquisition was nearly instantaneous. A run through dense trees didn't faze the unit either; tracking remained true and steady. Performance on a bike was equally impressive. Whatever witchcraft has been cooked up by the designers of the SiRF technology, we like it!

The simple docking cradle makes charging and data connectivity a snap.

While the Forerunner 305 isn't billed as a GPS navigation device, it does have some rudimentary mapping, waypoint marking, and routing capabilities. In addition to marking locations along your journey, you can zoom in or out of a simple map that displays your current direction and path. There's also a "go to location" feature that routes you back to your starting location, or to any location you have defined. Once you have defined several locations, you can save this information as a route, allowing you to travel the same path in the future. As you'll see below, the 305's new "Courses" feature gives you new levels of control over how you define your favorite runs and rides.

Training Functions
The 305 is first and foremost a training tool, and its ability to organize a ton of data types into a user experience that is intuitive and simple is no small feat. Whiz-bang technology aside, if you can't use it and make it a natural part of your exercise routine, it's worthless. When it comes to these factors -- and here's the take home message on the 305 -- this device is successful where many other devices fail.

The heart and soul of the 305 can be found on the data screens, which give you real-time information about all aspects of your workout. In fact, the 305 can display a dizzying array of data, such as calories burned, distance, elevation, grade, and heading, as well as multiple lap and pace modes. The 305 adds the ability to track heartrate, lap heartrate, average heartrate, and heartrate zones via the included coded heartrate chest strap. With the purchase of a separate wireless cadence and speed meter, you can also track bike performance data.

Thankfully, the device makes it easy to define how much or how little data you want to view during a workout. You can arrange the data that's most important to you and then make that data appear front and center on the device. Indeed, within a few minutes of skimming the manual and fiddling with the device setup, you'll have your most important data displaying just the way you like it. The ability to display heartrate is a big plus, too, as it's a fairly good indicator of excercise output, fatigue, and fitness level. The 305 has all the heartrate functions you'd expect from a full-function monitor, including the ability to set target zones and alerts to maximize the effectiveness of your workouts.

Garmin's Virtual Partner function was cool feature of previous Forerunners and they've decided to keep a good thing going with the 305. If you're the type that performs best when you've got a competitor egging you on, you'll love this function, as it allows you to set up virtual running or biking companions that compete against you.

If you're looking for an complicated workout with a variety of intervals and intensity levels, or just a quick three-mile jog against your best time last week, the 305 has you covered. Navigating to the Workouts menu on the device yields three options: Quick Workouts, Interval, and Advanced Workout. A quick workout is just that; set the distance and time, distance and pace, or time and pace of your planned workout and off you go. Interval workouts are just the same, but they allow you to add repetitions and rest between them. When you really want to get fancy with your exercise, you can step up to advanced workouts, which include goals for each workout step, as well as varied distances, times, and rest periods. You can use the Garmin Training Center software to set up these workouts and then upload them to the device.

Computer Connectivity and Software
Garmin has been outfitting their devices with USB connectivity for some time now -- a welcome move for those who struggled with serial port connections in the days of yore. Thanks to USB, the 305 integrates seamlessly with the Training Center software and we quickly had workout history uploaded and stored on the computer. Not only does Training Center--which is compatible with both PC and Mac--make it easy to track your performance, you can graph data such as heartrate alongside your speed and distance. Over time, this is a great way to view your fitness levels increase, and it also helps you see what types of workouts are necessary to strengthen your weaknesses. For instance, if you see your heartrate begin to spike after a certain distance, you know you need to increase your endurance workouts to train that area of fitness.

In a first for the Forerunner series, the Training Center software also lets you define courses on your computer that you can upload to the device. When course information is combined with uploaded workout information, the Forerunner becomes a complete guide, telling you where to go, when to make a turn, and what kind of workout to do when you're on the road or path. Back on the computer, the software's ability to overlay workout data on maps of the course makes it easy to see where the course offers up the tough hills and the easy recovery spots. Plus, the ability to track historical performance on a given course is a great way to measure your improvement.

The 305 is also fully compatible with Garmin's MotionBased service, which takes your training to another level by connecting your data with the Internet. While we weren't able to use the service, the promise of sharing courses, maps, workouts, and performance data with other users is intriguing. And if you're a serious endurance athlete, you'll be glad to know that the 305 is also compatible with TrainingPeaks.com, an easy-to-use web based training system designed to help athletes train for any event.

this will be great once i get out and run some trails or start riding my bike again. it basically does not have a map even though it claims to have one. it has a pointer. the heart rate monitor works good, but the numbers are tiny for that piece of data if it is something you're trying to pay attention to while running.

I bought this Forerunner because I wanted to train for a triathalon. Very easy to change between running and biking which is nice. There are a lot of features with this but once you get the hang of it, the watch is easy to navigate. Heart monitor is a little quirky to setup. Mine didnt setup automatically off the bat so I had to keep turning the device off and on until it connected. Not really that big of a deal and shouldnt be a show stopper for purchasing this watch.

"Surprisingly effective" 2010-05-16

When my last GPS mount (Bracketron UFM-100BL Nav-Mat GPS Friction Dash Pad) lost its stickiness and began to slide around the dash like a puck on ice I bought this to replace it.

It's lighter than the Bracketron mount and the bottom didn't feel particularly grippy so I was skeptical that it would work that well. I was wrong...it's extremely stable and doesn't move during hard cornering. As an added bonus, I don't need to use the suction cup mount (as I did with my previous dash pad). From time to time (hot days usually) the suction would fail and I'd have to re-seat the mount on the pad. My Nuvi fits on it perfectly (as it should...both products are from Garmin) and I can easily adjust the screen to a good viewing angle.

Even though the price dropped since I purchased it a few weeks ago I think it's still priced too high for what you get (it's 2.5x more expensive than my previous one). You definitely won't be disappointed in the product itself, just what you get for your money.

the Garmin Nuvi line of GPS units is outstanding. I have purchased at least 6 units for my family and friends and have been pleased with their ease of use and convenience. I had the opportunity to mess with a TomTom unit the other day and I really do prefer the Garmin interface. I also greatly prefer the widescreen to the smaller one.

I wish it were possible to program routes with via points and then save those routes...not a feature in the software though - just something I could use.

My wife and I purchased one for out trip to Philadelphia and the surrounding area. We foud it very easy to use and got us exactly where we needed to go at all times except one (destination had moved to another address). They offer a free map update which took quite a while to download from th Garmin site and then upload to the device, but mind you it was a 2Gb file! All in all, we're very pleased with it.

I love my Garmin 260W GPS. I just received it and have only used it a few times
but it is a godsend because I'm very bad with directions. The only flaw I find
is that I don't like the accent on the voice. I have a hard time understanding
her.

My first GPS is nuvi 350. It is so reliable even I dropped it so many times (like when the support can't attached on windshield, or other sudden drop). After years using, the batter not really last long. Besides, thanks for the price of map, not really consider to pay the price that you can buy a new one). Ever tried some different brands but like still Garmin's interface. GPS for me just for direction. All other fancy features are useless and waste for the money. 260W may be a good choice.

Basically, not really complain about interface or others. Can really see some improvement compare to the old model. For today's market, you cannot really ask much for a $100 GPS. All my expect is "OK" and "reliable".

The 1st package I received with charing issue. After attached the charger, no matter for car or home AC/DC charger, it always switched between computer connected and map screen. Can't charge, can't use.

Thanks for amazon's policy, return and got 2nd package in short time. Seems every thing works. But it won't show charged complete even I charge it for 12 hours. Not sure Garmin just make it simpler to save some money. But I kind of lose some confidence about the brand.

Will use it and update the info after any thing happened......
