I’m still in Buenos Aires, but this site about my experiences is being retired. I’ll be starting something new in the future, so look for that.

Thanks for all your support and encouragement. I’ve met a lot of great people through this site and I hope everyone continues to enjoy their Buenos Aires experience.

The band is coming to Buenos Aires as part of their 2009 “Tour of the Universe.”

    They will be playing Club Ciudad de Buenos Aires on Saturday, October 17, 2009. Ticket prices have not yet been set, but they will be available from Ticketek on Tuesday, May 19, 2009. We’ll update this post when we have more pricing details.

    If you do not yet have an account with Ticketek, I’d recommend that you create one in advance of the on-sale date to make sure you don’t have any problems. You’ll need your passport number to register if you do not have a DNI or other form of local ID. Tickets will be available online as well as at Ticketek locations.

    Depeche Mode’s next date after Buenos Aires isn’t until Thursday, October 22 in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, which leaves open the possibility of adding additional dates should this first one sell out.

    Some other upcoming international acts playing in Buenos Aires include George Clinton (5/19 – 5/21), Jonas Brothers (5/21), The Kooks (6/16  & 6/17 – both sold out), Cat Power (7/16), Aimee Mann (8/13) and maybe even Whitesnake.

    Some great web sites for finding out about upcoming shows include Ticketek, Entradas Q and Vammos. All the sites are in Spanish, but are easy to navigate and can be translated with Google Translate.

Unfortunately, those measures no longer work for Hulu, the largest free online site for viewing TV shows.

    TechCrunch reported yesterday that Hulu is now blocking VPN services and anonymous proxies in addition to their other blocks on non-US based IP addresses. If you try to access the service using a VPN like Hotspot Shield, you now get the message:

    Based on your IP address, we noticed you are trying to access Hulu through an anonymous proxy tool. Hulu is not currently available outside the U.S. If you’re in the U.S., you’ll need to disable your anonymizer to access videos on Hulu.

    If you’e lucky enough to have a private or corporate VPN in the US, that should still work, but this move effectively shuts out most of the major public VPN providers.

    In a bit of positive news, the Financial Times reports that Hulu has been signing international deals for content. This could lead to an global roll-out of its services, though there is no estimated time frame for this.  Looks like we’ll go back to using Miro and BitTorrent until someone realizes that content cannot really be controlled anymore.

    American Express allows Platinum Card and Centurion Card holders (personal or business) to cash a personal check from your US bank at their customer service center at Arenales 707, Buenos Aires. You’ll need to bring the following with you:

    • Your American Express card
    • Your US passport
    • A personal check from a US bank

    At their offce, simply head downstairs and get into the shorter line for Platinum card holders. At the window, present your American Express card and passport.  You then make out a personal check payable to “American Express” and you’ll receive dollars or pesos in return. There is no fee for this service, so it’s the cheapest way to get cash here.  The only restriction is that they have a $5000 per calendar month limit. You must also sign a form stating that you do not intend to stay in Argentina for more than 12 months from the current date.

The U.S. Embassy in Argentina just sent out this alert:

    This warden message is being issued to alert U.S. citizens residing and traveling in Argentina that to date the government of Argentina is not reporting any confirmed cases of H1N1 Influenza (commonly called swine flu).  However as a precaution, authorities in Argentina have temporarily suspended flights to Argentina which originate in Mexico, the country where most cases have been reported.  Seven suspected cases are under review.  More information on H1N1 Influenza in Argentina may be obtained from the Argentine Ministry of Health website.

    The U.S. Embassy will continue to monitor this situation and will issue updated messages.  For further information about H1N1 Influenza, please consult the Department of State information at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_pandemic.html, the United States Centers for Disease Control website or the World Health Organization website.
