The new analogue clock on Constellation Quest Ferrari is inspired by the distinctive rev-counter on Ferrari’s 458 Italia.

A new set of ringtones was obtained from live recordings of a Ferrari 458 Italia on a test circuit and is available exclusively to this handset.

With Constellation Quest Ferrari, Vertu has enhanced its offering of relevant, tailored services even further. Once a customer registers the handset with Vertu Concierge, it becomes the key to the world of Ferrari.

By pressing the specially created Cavallino key, prominently featured on the front of the handset, customers are able to access unique Ferrari content and experiences.

Shangri-La Hotel in Tokyo voted tops for luxury

The Shangri-La Hotel in Tokyo has been named as the number one Luxury Hotel in the World in the Traveler’s Choice 2012 Awards by TripAdvisor.

The awards are based on reviews and opinions provided by travelers and were introduced 10 years ago.

The categories for 2012 have been expanded to include top-25 lists for 30 countries and regions, as well as an international competition for the best properties to visit.

3,943 hotels were recognized by TripAdvisor, with the other categories including awards for best service, best bargain, best relaxation and spa and trendiest hotel.

The judging was a result of more than 60 million comments from visitors, taking into account the quality of service, price and standard of guest rooms.

The Shangri-La, close to Tokyo Station in the heart of the metropolis, took the top spot in the category for the 25 top luxury hotels in the world.

The Hotel Imperial Vienna took the second place on the list and the Hotel Palacio de la Magdalena in Soto del Barco in Spain in third.

La Casa del Rector, in Almagro, Spain, was rated fourth-best luxury hotel in the world, with The Grand Del Mar in San Diego, California rounding out the top five places.

Gold Silk Cape Spun By Spiders

An astonishing golden outfit made from the silk of spiders has gone on display at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum.

It took more than four years to make the four-metre-long hand-woven textile from the silk of 1.2million female golden orb spiders, native to Madagascar.

It was made by Englishman Simon Peers and American Nicholas Godley, both of whom have lived and worked in Madagascar for many years.

Spiders were collected every morning before silk is extracted from them by trained handlers. They were returned to the wild at the end of each day.

The process is extremely laborious – on average, 23,000 spiders are needed to create about 28 grams of silk, according to the museum.

The last known spider silk textile was made for an exhibition in Paris in 1900 but no examples remain.

Kate Moss has been revealed as the face of Mango’s Spring 2012 campaign, appearing in print and television campaigns captured by Terry Richardson.

While the Barcelona-based retailer had opted for actresses including Scarlett Johansson and Penélope Cruz to front collections in recent years, Moss’s appointment marks a move further into the realm of high fashion for the brand.

Kate Moss attended a photocall January 24 at Mango’s London flagship store in Oxford Street ahead of the collection launch.

A television commercial starring Moss called ‘Spy Game’ will also go live across 40 countries including the UK, France and Germany early March.

The fashionista’s previous high street collaborations include modeling and designing her own fashion lines for British retailer Topshop.

“Kate Moss was chosen as the image of Mango because she is a world-famous fashion icon, making her one of the most sought-after models in the fashion world.”

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay will be opening his first Las Vegas restaurant this year with a menu that’s supposed to bridge Parisian culture and Ramsay’s British roots with steakhouse fare and fish and chips.

Gordon Ramsay Steak will open this spring at the Paris Las Vegas casino and seat 274 diners in a modern steakhouse atmosphere styled after the City of Light.

Before becoming a Michelin-starred chef, Ramsay trained in Paris under the likes of Guy Savoy and Joel Robuchon.

Menu selections will feature steakhouse fare, specializing in aged beef, but also reflect Ramsay’s British heritage with fish and chips and Shepherd’s Pie offerings.

The Las Vegas restaurant opening comes as Ramsay closes two others in Australia. Last year, Gordon Ramsay Holdings announced it’d be closing Maze and Maze Grill in Melbourne after concluding that the restaurants were not “sustainable.”

It also closed two Maze locations in Prague and Cape Town over the last few years, but locations in New York, London and Qatar continue to operate.

Superyacht builder Ferretti sold to Chinese company

China’s Shangong Heavy Industries has bought the Ferretti Group, taking over 75% of the Italian shipmaker’s capital.

Sleekly tailored with gleaming chrome accessories and luxurious saloons, the Ferretti Group designs some of the most exclusive yachts in the nautical world.

Ferretti has 8 yacht brands (Ferretti Yachts, Pershing, Itama, Bertram, Riva, Mochi Craft, CRN and Ferretti Custom Line) and owns a total of 8 shipyards.

As part of the deal, Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and Strategic Value Partners will each become owners of a 12.5 percent stake in the yachtmaker.

Ferretti was forced to cede control to lenders in 2009 when it missed a loan payment on a debt and the crisis shrank its customer base.

In the 2009 debt-restructuring, a group of creditors led by RBS agreed to convert some of their debt to equity to avert a Ferretti bankruptcy.

Ferretti, which employs 2,000 people, will keep its management, headquarters and production bases in Italy.

Demand for luxury yachts in China is growing, and with a million millionaires in the country, the nation’s new rich are looking for new ways to flaunt their assets.

The number of luxury powerboats and yachts in China is expected to increase by more than 10-fold to over 10,000 by 2015.

Shandong Heavy, which makes heavy-duty industrial products, will seek a separate listing for Ferretti in Hong Kong in three to five years, Chairman Tan Xuguang said.

Louis Vuitton confirm perfume debut

Louis Vuitton has confirmed its entrance into the realm of fragrance, with master perfumer Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud heading up the scent development.

The news is significant considering the French fashion house has not marketed any perfumes since the 1920s and ’30s.

It signals another expansion following the brand’s ventures into watches in 2002, fine jewelry in 2004 and eyewear in 2005.

Cavallier-Belletrud has officially started work with the brand, although there is not yet a date for release as the perfumer will be taking his time to find the perfect scents.

Cavallier-Belletrud “is said to be a specialist in using natural, raw materials,” while Louis Vuitton “has recently been investigating rare, almost-extinct flowers in France.”

The upcoming fragrance will eventually be distributed exclusively in Louis Vuitton’s 461 boutiques worldwide.

Cavallier-Belletrud’s past work includes L’Eau d’Issey, Dior Addict, Poeme by Lancôme and Stella by Stella McCartney.

For 2012, Ralph Lauren presents two new interpretations in its Slim Classique collection, featuring the luxuriously embellished cases.

The first model places a single row of brilliant-cut diamonds on the bezel, set off by a glossy black frame that emphasizes the rectilinear form of the watch.

On the second watch, two rows of diamonds make the bezel sparkle. Diamonds have also been set into the lugs, and a single rosecut diamond adorns the crown.

As with models of prior years, both versions feature traditionally crafted silver opaline dials, with domed and strongly defined black Roman and Arabic numerals.

Presented in 18k white gold, these models are fitted on a black alligator strap and matching white gold pin buckle, and both are executed in the resolutely classic 27.5mm width, respecting the traditional dimensions of an iconic dress watch.

As with the other Slim Classique collection models these new pieces are powered by an ultra-flat hand-winding movement crafted by Piaget for Ralph Lauren.

Japan store offers $250k jewel lucky dip bag

A Japanese department store is offering anyone with a quarter of a million dollars a lucky dip bag stuffed with expensive jewellery to ring in the New Year.

One lucky customer prepared to hand over a numerically significant 20.12 million yen ($259,000) can celebrate the turn of the year with a fistful of precious baubles.

The “fukubukuro” (lucky bag) — a feature of the New Year in Japan, one of the country’s most important holidays — will go on sale on January 2.

Customers do not know the exact contents of fukubukuro, but they are usually bought on the understanding that the contents will be worth more than the sale price.

“We hope it will lift spirits for the New Year,” said an official at Okajima Department Store in Kofu, a city 100 kilometres (60 miles) west of Tokyo.

The store said the three pieces of jewellery — platinum rings featuring a 3.13-carat emerald and a 79.20-carat tourmaline, both glittering with diamonds, and a pendant with a 172.53-carat aquamarine — would normally retail at 50 million yen.

Hotel Rates in New York City skyrocket ahead of NYE

New York may be officially the most popular place in the US to spend New Year, but travelers will still be paying through the nose for the privilege.

Staying in the Big Apple in 2012 will cost revelers up to 700 percent more than normal, price comparison site NewYorkHotels.org said this week.

On average, the 50 properties that have room availability are charging more than triple their regular rates, the website calculated.

Earlier this week, Priceline.com revealed that it has seen a surge of interest among travelers wishing to spend New Year’s Eve in New York, which pushed Las Vegas off the top spot for New Year’s Eve destinations for the first time in seven years.

That seems to have led to something of a booking frenzy, with one two-star hotel in Brooklyn reportedly pushing up its nightly rate from $119 to $1,000 for the night and none in the center charging under $500.

Christian Louboutin, whose red-soled footwear is coveted by women worldwide, is to open his first US boutique for men in New York next spring.

News of the 1,035-sqf shop in the Meatpacking District comes after the brand opened his first boutique dedicated to men’s shoes last September in Paris.

“The men’s shoes only represent a small portion of the business at present but we think it has huge potential for the future,” Alexis Mourot, CEO for the brand, said.

Louboutin’s current line of footwear for men includes a two-tone satin “John John” derby for $895 and a black leather sneaker-like boot for $995 that features corset-like laces running all the way down to the toebox.

Fatten Up Skinny Strands

In beauty, the grass always seems a bit greener on the other side. Women with straight hair wish for curly cues and those with a head full of spirals want just the opposite. What’s a girl with fine, flat hair to do? Wish for a thicker mane? Maybe. Or she can embrace her locks and follow these simple tricks from Celebrity Stylist, Tippi Shorter, on how to fake the fluff.

Start in the shower

“I believe in building your foundation in the shower,” Shorter states. Thickening and volumizing shampoos and conditioners boost fine hair by expanding the diameter of each strand. Bottom line: While some work better than others, if it’s vavava volume you’re after, it’s important to make sure you’re not using a shampoo or conditioner that will weigh your hair down. Get a mousse boost

A little spritz of root volumizer and a dollop of mousse goes a long way. After towel drying your hair, spray a root lifter like Living Proof Full Root Lifting Spray right onto your roots and massage the formula into your scalp with your fingers. Then, Shorter suggests applying “a golf ball sized amount” of a lightweight mousse like L’Oreal Paris Studio Body Builder Mousse to the left and right side of your head from roots to ends.

Make gravity your BFF

Flip your head upside down and rough dry your hair (quickly move the blowdryer back and forth throughout your strands) to allow for any excess moisture to escape. “You want gravity to help start the fullness,” explains Shorter. Finish by flipping your head right-side-up and using a large round brush to smooth ends and add maximum fullness.

Stick with velcro rollers

Once dry, add a few Velcro rollers to the top section of your hair in one-inch sections for an added boost (four or five should do the trick). Leave them in while you do your makeup. Take them out just before you’re ready to walk out the door, and give your strands a quick shake.

Thought so. Welcome to the season of dry skin, and you’re experiencing all of its un-pleasantries. But, it doesn’t have to be that way. With the help of skin-saving dermatologists Dr. Arielle Kauvar, Dr. Dennis Gross and Dr. Alex A. Khadavi, we’ll get to the bottom of your winter skin issues, and share handy tips on how to rescue your skin from dryness.

Why skin becomes dry in the winter:

Before we can solve any problem we first have to know what’s causing it. According to Gross, “Skin produces less oil in the winter due to the absence of sun light and heat…resulting in dry skin.” And, “there is less humidity in winter air…[which] causes moisture to evaporate off our skin,” he says.

But, it’s not just our environment that’s to blame. “Bathing too frequently with hot water and harsh soaps,” says Kauvar, are also common dry skin culprits.

When combined, the factors listed above are responsible for irritating our skin barrier. And, when “the skin barrier becomes perturbed, we need to aggressively moisturize to help get it back into shape,” says Khadavi. Here’s how to do that…

Top 10 tips for soothing dry skin from head to toe:

Tip 1: Look for quality moisturizers. They should contain “humectants (ingredients that draw water in like glycerin, hyaluronic acid) and emollients which are oils and lipids (like mineral oil, shea butter and ceramides) that seal the moisture in and help keep a protective barrier on the surface of the skin,” says Kauvar. Try Aveeno Skin Relief Moisturizing Lotion.

Tip 2: After showering, “keep the bathroom door closed to preserve the steam. Gently towel dry your body and apply moisturizer to skin that is saturated,” says Gross.

Tip 3: “Avoid long hot showers and baths which cause skin to dehydrate,” says Kauvar. And, “use a creamy cleanser instead of a harsh soap,” she says. Try Kiehl’s Crème de Corps Nurturing Body Washing Cream.

Tip 4: “Put moisturizer on the skin before you shower, it will shield the skin from drying up,” says Khadavi. Post showering, pat your skin dry and reapply.

Tip 5: Use “lip balms mixed with gentle exfoliators to remove the dry skin,” says Gross. They will keep lips hydrated, he says. Try Ole Henriksen African Red Tea Exfoliating Lip Salvation.

Tip 6: If you’re prone to dry, chapped hands, “avoid using alcohol-based antibacterial hand sanitizers that dry out the skin,” says Kauvar. And, “always apply a generous amount of moisturizer immediately after washing hands,” she adds.

Tip 7: If you have really dry areas, put moisturizer on those spots and wrap your skin with Saran wrap before bed. Leave it on overnight. This will recreate a barrier that will allow your body to repair itself, says Khadavi. Sounds weird, but it works!

Tip 8: To ditch flakes, skin should be “gently exfoliated ([use a] microdermabrasion brush, bead scrub), and a moisturizer should be applied immediately after exfoliation,” says Kauvar.

Tip 9: For thick, dry skin on areas like your elbows and knees, use salicylic or lactic acid-infused products. “Thicker skin generally needs a chemical exfoliant,” says Khadavi. Try Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta Daily Body Peel.

Tip 10: If your face feels dry, but is breakout prone, soothe your skin with a “moisturizer that is labeled oil free. These lotions increase the water content of skin without adding extra oil, so they won’t aggravate or cause acne. Start by applying the moisturizer once a day and then trade up to twice daily if you need it,” says Gross. Try Garnier Moisture Rescue Refreshing Gel-Cream.

Beauty Tipping Etiquette

When it comes to expressing your beauty gratitude, your manner of tipping speaks volumes—especially if you want that same hot haircut again or you want to be able to saunter into the spa unannounced for an emergency facial in the future. Here are some general guidelines and tips (not of the monetary variety) from the pros:

Haircuts or style services: 20-30%

Celebrity hair stylist Ted Gibson says, “I think tipping is a way to thank your stylist for great service. I say 20 percent is standard but if you love your new haircut and color, up to 30 percent is amaze.”

Mike Petrizzi, celebrity colorist at De Berardinis Hair Salon in Chelsea, New York says, “Most of my clients tip 15-20 percent of the color service price. Of course, some clients are extremely generous and I always make sure to take extra good care of them.”

Manicures: At least 20% (preferably in cash)

When celebrity Nail Stylist Tracylee had her own salon, almost all her customers tipped 20 percent and some even brought her coffee or lunch as a genuine sign of their appreciation.

Makeup application: 10-25%

According to Betsy Briggs Cathcart of Studio BBC Salon, a “tip” means “to insure promptness.” Don’t tip if your artist is continually running more than 30 minutes behind, always complaining or gossiping.

Kelli Bartlett, Product Specialist at MAC Times Square advises customers to “ask the cashier what the store’s policy on tipping is when your service is complete. I usually bring 20 percent of the service charge in cash, just in case I can’t tip with my card.”

Facials: 15-20%

Cheryl Anne Katz, founder of Lazur La Vie Day Spa in Nyack, NY, advises customers to be aware of various tipping practices because of the current economy. While a 20 percent was formerly standard, “the most recent scenario of constrained beauty economics has driven aesthetic tipping down even further,” she says. “A tip of 20 percent on undiscounted, pre-coupon pricing and a ceiling of $20/per hour tip at the high end should be sufficient.”

4 Tricks to Make It Look Like You Slept Nine Hours

The best way to look rested is (drumroll, please…) actually getting nine hours of sleep! When that’s not possible—and when is it, really?—here’s how the experts fake it.

Try a Morning Mist

Celebrity makeup artist Molly Stern was recently at an event with singer/actress Mandy Moore at 3 a.m. Not a typo. The first thing she reached for—after her double shot of espresso—was a hydrating mist. “Not only does it open up your capillaries and get the blood flowing, but there’s a refreshing aromatherapy element too,” she says. For maximum awakening benefits, spritz your face and allow the liquid to soak in for at least two minutes.

Give Yourself a Massage

Puffy eyes are caused by pooled tears, and while propping your head on a plush pillow may prevent them from forming, Los Angeles dermatologist Tony Nakhla offers this simple self-massage for whisking the renegade bags away: 1) Rake your fingertips (the pads of your fingers, not your nails) from the inner, lower eyelids outward toward the temples, 2) Continue the stroke down the temples, over the cheeks and down the neck, and 3) Repeat three to five times.

Hit the Highlighter

A shimmery highlighter can do wonders anytime of day, but especially at 7 a.m. (when you haven’t had your coffee yet). “Highlighter gives sunlight and artificial light something to grab onto and brightens the whole face,” Stern says. She likes patting sheer cream formulas below the outer corners of the eyes, right along the top of the cheekbones. If you don’t have a highlighter handy, any light eye shadow will do.

Embrace Bold Blush

Bright blush can feel and look a little scary in the cold light of morning, but according to Stern, it’s really a life-saver. “I say the brighter the better—a poppy peach or a reddish tone both look great swirled on the apples of the cheeks. It just gives you that natural lively glow.”

You know how some people wait with bated breathe to see who will be the next contestants on “Dancing With the Stars” or which designer decides to hawk their wares at Target next? I do the same thing with Pantone’s color of the year—I anxiously wait for the new hue announcement. Why the hubbub over a color? Welllllll, the Pantone color of the year has the ability to change the course of makeup trends—just when you thought purple would be in, Pantone flips the script. To help you be ahead of the game, we asked a few beauty experts to tell us how to wear the 2012 Pantone shade—Tangerine Tango.

On cheeks and eyes…

“When wearing a hot color like tangerine, pick one feature and run with it. A sheer pop on the cheeks is an easy ways to interpret the trend. If you’re feeling adventurous, try a tangerine eyeliner (top lash line only.) With such a fun focal shade, keep the rest of your makeup clean and simple.”

On nails…

“It will look terrific on short to medium length nails! This color could be playful and sexy yet very feminine and sophisticated/classic, so I recommend that you use a round-ish shape with this. In general, I like to use different colors to contrast between the hands and toes, but in this case you can match this color on your hands and toes for maximum effect.”

On lips…

“To wear this color as a lipstick, perfect skin with concealer and foundation as needed. Apply the lip color in a matte, velvet, or cream finish. Line the eyes with black pencil, smudge softly, and apply lots of mascara. For the more ‘fashion forward’ look, apply matte bronzer to the cheeks, and softly powder the forehead and nose. For the ‘pop star’ look a la Nicki Minaj, add lip gloss and a shimmer on the apples of the cheeks.”

Do I Look More Trustworthy With Or Without Makeup On?

Beauty has long fascinated us. Helen of Troy’s likeness launched ships, Shakespeare waxed poetic in sonnets on its virtue, and studies in modern days have proven that attractive people enjoy benefits like higher salaries and preferential social treatment. But for the first time, research has revealed that women who wear makeup are judged as more trustworthy and capable than when they go barefaced.

Barefaced vs. professional vs. glamourous

In the study, participants were shown photos of 25 female subjects ranging in age from 20 to 50, and of Caucasian, African-American and Hispanic backgrounds. Each woman was presented with three different looks that varied in the amount of makeup applied—“barefaced,” “professional” and “glamourous.”

Groups of 149 adults (61 men) rated each photo on perceived trustworthiness and competency after a flash-viewing of 250 milliseconds, while another group of 119 adults (30 men) did the same after viewing photos for an unlimited amount of time.

In both groups, the results were the same. Women wearing the professional look were assumed the most trustworthy and capable, followed by the glamour look, and lastly, the barefaced look.

“For the first time, we have found that applying makeup has an effect beyond increasing attractiveness—it impacts first impressions and overall judgments of perceived likeability, trustworthiness, and competence,” says study lead Nancy Etcoff, PhD, a Harvard Medical School Assistant Clinical Professor. Etcoff is also author of Survival of the Prettiest, which theorizes that beauty is just not a cultural creation, but has deep biological and evolutionary roots.

Makeup meanings

The findings made me wonder: does this mean that makeup is a socially empowering tool woman can use to their advantage, or is it a ‘war paint’ trap of sorts, suffocating us all with the expectation of looking a certain, mass-dictated way?

As a lifetime cosmetics devotee whose obsession for the shimmery stuff runs deep, I’ve made a living writing and reporting on makeup and I’ve always viewed it as a source of both power and comfort.

Having spoken with thousands of women over the years about makeup, I also know there is something else prominently at play: how it makes you feel. Whether you want to hide the fact that you only got two hours of sleep, are a cancer patient yearning for the normalcy of having brows again, or just want to rock a red lip on a much-anticipated Friday night date, I think the confidence that makeup gives women is part of what others perceive, and positively respond to in interactions with you.

Girl power

I was curious what the modern feminist perspective is on the topic, so I asked Feministe.com executive editor Jill Filipovic (who just so happens to be brilliant and has an affinity for high end mascara) for her thoughts.

“Of course women should do what they need to do to feel attractive and professional and to succeed in their workplaces; but on a societal level, I don’t think we can applaud the results of this study as ‘women harnessing success,’ Filipovic says. “Makeup, as we see from this study, isn’t as optional as a lot of folks would like to say it is—at least not if you want to be perceived as competent and put-together. I wear makeup and have nothing against it, but I do find it troubling that it’s expected of women as a class, and that men aren’t required to paint their faces in order to be taken seriously.”

True that. It’s definitely a double standard. But can we work it to our advantage?

The middle ground

If you choose to wield a makeup brush in the way this study suggests (lord knows there are countless ways to wear makeup, and I’ve never been one for rules), I’m going to leave you with some words of wisdom from Lancôme Beauty At Every Age Expert Sandy Linter, who I think has this ‘professional makeup’ thing nailed.

“Do simple, and flattering. Neutrals are not boring, they are beautiful,” Linter tells me. Even out skin with foundation or concealer as needed, sweep a natural-looking blush onto cheeks, brighten and define the eye area with a touch of liner and mascara. Soft, sweet shades are best for lips, and don’t forget to groom and fill in brows if needed—it’s the one step that makes the greatest (and most subtle) difference. “People should be seeing you and not the products that went into making you,” adds Linter.

Irritating social expectation? Emboldening tool to have at your disposal? Perhaps the answer isn’t so black and white. After all, as women, neither are we.

Bat those lashes

The focal point of a profile picture is always the eyes–so make ‘em pop. For a natural look, you can’t go wrong with cream or taupe eyeshadow. For more fun, try sheer washes of color with a soft sheen, which will add light to your peepers. Don’t forget liner for definition, curled lashes and mascara!

Instantly whiten teeth

Nothing lights up a photo like a pearly white smile. For a quick brightening, use this model trick: after brushing, rinse your tooth brush, dip it into hydrogen peroxide for 30 seconds, and then brush again. Hydrogen peroxide not only lightens teeth, it kills germs and heals canker sores.

Show off luscious lips

A contrast of lipcolor looks great in photos, so don’t be afraid to experiment. Lipgloss looks best as a highlighter dotted down the middle of your lower lip and outlining the cupid’s bow. Unless it’s Halloweenm, steer clear of glitter in photos, which can add an unnatural glare to your face.

Go for a solid color

When it comes to clothing, patterns and prints can confuse the viewer’s eye, and stripes can make you look wide (Yikes!). Try a vibrant shade like red, purple or blue to enliven your eyes and convey confidence, or rely on basic black for a sleek, elongated look.

Embrace lightweight fabrics

Wondering why the camera adds 10 pounds? It’s likely the fabric you’re wearing. Stay away from bulk-adding sequins, corduroy, terry cloth, flannel, taffeta, velvet and angora sweaters. Say yes to lighter, matte materials made with cotton, silk or lycra.

Legs for days

Work those stems! Heels help define your calves and give your hips a little exaggerated curve, while nude shoes that match your skin tone will make your legs look longer. If you have a cute pedi, don’t be afraid to kick off your shoes and go barefoot–it makes you look approachable.

Make it about you

The background shouldn’t overpower you; go for simple and clutter free. Make sure that objects behind you don’t look like they’re growing out of you. A stone wall, leafy green nature and interesting spaces, like under a doorway or to the side of a window, all set the stage for you to dazzle.

Breaking up is hard to do, even when the relationship is just plain ugly. Case in point: Bad makeup trends that are the beauty equivalent of drunk-dialing—women keep going back to them in moments of weakness, while everyone around them is left wondering “what is she thinking?”

Talon nails

It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye, which is well within the realm of possibilities when you’re sporting Freddie Kreuger-esque fingernails. “Your nails should be sexy and functional, not a scary safety hazard,” says DC-based makeup artist FeliceSkye. Wake up from the nightmare once and for all, and clip those things.

Overplucked eyebrows

“Overplucked brows are one of the worst things you can do to your face,” says FeliceSkye. “Are you sad, surprised, villainous, or having issues with your thyroid?” Seriously, back away from the tweezers. Even Pam Anderson did.

Bronzer overdose

When you’re applying bronzer, the goal should be to look as though you have a sun-kissed glow, not like you’re the newest cast member on Jersey Shore. To avoid looking Snookified, pick a bronzer that’s one to two shades darker than your natural skin tone, and know when to say when.

Pastel eye shadow

Leave the spackled-on pink, violet, and baby blues for the Easter Bunny, and if you must go pastel, adjust your application technique. “These colors actually look fresh and modern when they’re used one at a time and applied as a soft, sheer wash of color below the crease ,” explains FeliceSkye.

Frosty lipstick

We’re not sure what the most appealing thing about this look is: the fact that it makes your teeth look yellow, or your lips look corpse-like and crusty. The bottom line: Lips should look luscious and dewey, not dead. Opt for subtle shimmer and a lively pop of gloss instead.

“Just as lipstick can be personalized to match skintone, attitude and outfit, nails are the perfect accessory to complete your beauty look,” says Jan Arnold, Co-Founder and Style Director of CND. But why is nail polish suddenly gaining ground in usage and popularity? Michelle Mismas, founder of blog AllLacqueredUp.com, points a painted nail in the direction of the state of the economy; “The sales of nail polish have skyrocketed over the past five years in spite of the financial crisis we’re all facing. It used to be that lipstick was the most affordable way to get a little retail therapy and inject new color in your wardrobe, but nail polish has a better price point and has taken over.”Here are a few nail lacquers that take what we love most about lipstick, and bottle it.

Long wear:

Forget about frequent touch-ups; long wear formulas with chutzpah exist for nails too! “Like a color-stay lipstick, CND Shellac Power Polish won’t budge for two weeks, regardless of your active lifestyle,” asserts Arnold.

High shine:

Just like lipstick can give your pucker an ultra-shiny finish, you can score the same result from polishes. “China Glaze glass fleck glitters have a jelly texture that looks wet even when dry,” says Mismas.

Matte:

Is high shine too flashy for you? Try an opaque shade like Essie in Chinchilly or a matte top coat like Rescue Beauty Lounge Matte Top Coat, “that way you can take any nail polish in your collection and wear it matte,” says Mismas.

Repairing:

Most lipsticks include moisturizing ingredients. Nail lacquers are following suit by being infused with botanicals to strengthen, hydrate, and stimulate nail growth, like Deborah Lippmann nail polish that contains nourishing biotin and plant extracts.

Eat Your Way to Gorgeous Skin

Holiday meals don’t have to put you in a food coma or pack on the pounds. In fact, eat the right things during the holidays (and regularly) and you can give your complexion a gorgeous glow. Here, integrative medicine physician Frank Lipman, founder of Eleven Eleven Wellness Center in New York, gives you the most skin-friendly foods. So read on and put these edibles on the menu!

Skin loving food #1: Sweet potatoes

Dig into those yams this holiday season because these orange veggies are one of the best sources of beta carotene. And when you eat foods that contain beta carotene, the body converts it to vitamin A, which is retinol—the wrinkle-fighter found in topical anti-aging products. “Beta carotene also protects the skin against free-radical damage, helps repair damaged DNA and contributes to the growth and repair of the body’s tissues,” adds Lipman. Another benefit? Beta carotene boosts your skin’s ability to shed the dead, top layer of cells, something that slows down once you hit the big 3-0. Other ways to get your fill of this nutrient include carrots, mangos, apricots, cantaloupes, pumpkin, acorn squash and winter squash. “You can also get beta carotene from cod liver oil and butter that comes from grass-fed cows,” adds Lipman.

Skin loving food #2: Cranberries

“Some dark purple and red foods such as cranberries have been linked to improvements in skin,” says Lipman. One possible reason why is that these little berries are loaded with antioxidants. “People who eat more veggies containing antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds have less acne,” says Lipman. Just look for the fresh cranberry sauce during the holidays rather than the canned variety. The latter is usually processed and often contains ingredients like sugar that causes spikes in hormones and insulin levels, which can cause breakouts. Other good options include pomegranates, blueberries, blackberries and purple grapes.

Skin loving food #3: Salmon

Salmon is a cold-water fish loaded with omega-3 fatty acids that are crucial for glowing, gorgeous skin. Why? “The typical Western diet is full of fats and processed vegetable oils like soy and corn oils that can increase inflammation in the skin and stimulate pimple follicles causing acne,” says Lipman. Omega-3 fats from fish oil can help reduce inflammation, which may improve acne and other skin conditions. Foods full of omega-3 fatty acids also help hydrate your complexion from the inside out and skin always looks younger and more radiant when it’s moisturized. Other good sources of this nutrient include sardines, flaxseeds, flaxseed oil and walnuts.

Skin loving food #4: Brussel sprouts

Boiled Brussel sprouts are bursting with vitamin C—another compound that can help your complexion. “Vitamin C helps the body produce collagen, a protein that aids in the growth of cells and blood vessels and gives skin its firmness and strength,” says Lipman. Vitamin C also helps skin repair itself and create scar tissue. And that’s not all! “Vitamin C is an antioxidant that slows the rate of damage from unstable molecules that damage collagen and cause skin dryness, fine lines and wrinkles,” says Lipman. If Brussel sprouts aren’t your thing, other vitamin C rich foods include sweet potatoes, papayas, red bell peppers, broccoli, oranges, strawberries, cantaloupe and kiwis.

Skin loving food #5: Leafy green veggies

“Leafy greens—such as arugula, escarole, kale, collard greens, swiss chard, spinach—are packed with vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals,” explains Lipman. “They are anti-inflammatory and contain a lot of water, which helps keep you hydrated and contributes to beautiful skin and hair.” But, wait, there’s more! Leafy greens contain vitamin C, beta-carotene, and vitamin E, which keeps skin healthy as you age and helps protect it from the sun’s damaging rays. Leafy greens also contain chlorophyll which binds to heavy metals and toxins and helps remove them from the body. “This makes your skin look better because the toxins are not being removed through the skin,” says Lipman.

Skin loving food #6: Turkey

Turkey is loaded with protein, which is one of the building blocks of healthy skin. “Protein helps with collagen formation, which helps with elasticity,” explains Lipman. Turkey also contains selenium, a nutrient that’s believed to help protect skin cells from damage. Just opt for the white meat, which is healthier than the dark. If you’re not a turkey lover, look for other lean sources of protein like fish, chicken without the skin and lean meats.
