For the 22^nd year in a row, the Labrador retriever is the most popular dog breeds in the United States according to the American Kennel Club (AKC). The second favourite remains the German shepherd dog with the golden retriever swapping places with the beagle for third and fourth respectively. The top ten is rounded out, in order, by the bulldog, Yorkshire terrier, boxer, poodle, Rottweiler, and dachshund.

In the last decade the popularity of the smaller breeds has gradually been replaced by resurgence in the medium to large sized dogs. Small breeds that gained in popularity this year include the havanese (a Cuban breed known for its sassy attitude and sashaying hip movement) and the affenpinscher, which has a face that is often said to resemble that of a monkey. The Chihuahua, Pomeranian and pug all saw declines in their ranks this year.

Other trends included the increase in mastiff-type dogs such as the English mastiff, bullmastiff, Cane Corso, Neapolitan Mastiff, and Dogue de Bordeaux. The latter three are all fairly new to AKC recognition and have grown in popularity since they joined the list last year. Bully breeds are also on the rise including the bull terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier, and miniature bull terrier. Bulldogs are the mascots for several school teams including Yale University, Georgetown, Butler University, and the United States Marine Corp. The last grouping that saw an increase was the rarer gundog breeds such as the boykin spaniel, Welsh springer spaniel and Spinone Italiano.

Popularity is often relatable to entertainment trends and the presence of certain breeds in film and television shows. In the 1920s, perhaps riding on the popularity of Rin Tin Tin, the German shepherd dog was the most popular breed in America. Although it can be argued that sometimes breeds are chosen for media use because of their popularity as well. The Chihuahua has been in the top twenty for over a decade coinciding with its appearances in Taco Bell commercials and the Legally Blonde films. Currently the French Bulldog may be experiencing a similar gain in popularity. In 2002, it ranked 58^th in popularity. Stella, the French Bulldog, is a current regular on Modern Family and this year the breed ranked 14^th.

It is important to remember that dogs seen on television and in movies have been trained to behave in certain ways and should not be purchased with the expectation that the new puppy will be just like the one in the media. Popularity due to films like 101 Dalmatians can cause an upsurge in interest in the breed leading to unscrupulous people looking to make a quick dollar by breeding dogs without proper health checks and careful scrutiny of the suitability of potential homes. This, in turn, results in floods of dogs ending up in shelters when they fail to meet their owner’s expectations. Therefore, it is always important to remember that if you are interested in getting a new pet, do your research and pick a breed who’s temperament and lifestyle meets that of your own.

Mr Gwing named top dog at pet grooming salon

PETALING JAYA: The grit and will to live displayed by a severely disabled puppy inspired a pet groomer to name her centre after him and appoint the canine as its “CEO”.

Jovy Lee decided to name her salon after one-and-a-half-year-old Mr Gwing because even the veterinarian who attended to him and advised euthanasia now calls the dog a miracle.

“I felt it in my heart that naming my salon after Mr Gwing would bring me luck and inspire me to have his tenacity and perseverance,” said Lee, 40.

Mr Gwing, dressed in red to symbolise luck, was seen walking around and meeting guests who patted and pampered him during the official opening yesterday.

He is required to come to “work” at the salon every morning and goes home in the evening after a day's pampering and feasting on doggie treats.

Lee said she was still amazed at how Mr Gwing had allowed himself to be put through hours of strenuous physiotherapy and training without even a whimper until he was able to walk.

Mr Gwing was unable to move because his entire spinal column was spiral-shaped and the major bones in his body were either crooked or twisted.

The then three-month-old puppy was rescued by a canine welfare project Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) volunteer at the Semenyih wet market, where it was lying in its own urine and faeces without being able to move much.

“The puppy must have been dumped at the market because of his acute disability and MDDB was advised to euthanise him, as in addition to being severely disabled, he was also very fierce and would not allow anyone to touch him,” recalled Lee.

However, Lee said MDDB being strictly “no-kill” asked her cousin Derene Lee who was on a semester break to take up the challenge of rehabilitating the puppy.

“My cousin took the puppy back to our hometown Kuantan and a long rehabilitation process took place where the puppy was first made to overcome its fear of people and gain confidence,” said Lee.

Derene has since adopted Mr Gwing.

The outlet called Mr Gwing & Furry Friends Pet Salon is located in a petshop Superpetfans in Kota Damansara.

It's important to do your homework before you buy that cute little pooch.

PET lover Emily Tan was at the veterinary clinic with her four-year-old beagle, Rocky, when she met a dog owner she'll never forget.

Tan, 30, recalls that Rocky, a friendly and inquisitive dog, had tried to give the young, well-dressed woman a sniff when she recoiled in fear and backed against the wall.

“She was afraid Rocky would bite, but I assured her that he's a very friendly dog. Her reply was He's very big',” says Tan.

When she asked the woman if she knew how big her dog would grow into, she in turn asked if the puppy would be bigger than Rocky. Speechless, Tan could only nod in reply. The reason? The puppy was a rottweiler.

“She had obviously not taken the trouble to research the breed of puppy she had ... she could be headed for trouble,” Tan says.

And that is precisely the problem with many Malaysian dog owners, says Pet Positive president Anthony Thanasayan.

Too often, pet owners here do not do their homework and research before bringing a dog home.

“I always tell people to take their time. See which breed suits their lifestyle. If you have a lazy lifestyle, for example, getting a dobermann would be a huge mistake. You also have to consider the dog's personality, temperament and size. Can you handle your dog's size? If your dog is sick, can you carry him to the vet? Is your car big enough to accommodate the dog?

“Getting a dog must never be a spontaneous decision. It's just like if you're planning for a child, you need to think of your living arrangements, your finances, everything. A puppy is a commitment for the next 15 years,” Anthony explains.

An owner and trainer of four service dogs two German shepherds, a dobermann and a Shetland sheepdog Anthony firmly believes in responsible ownership.

“Everyone has the right to walk in public and not fear that he might get attacked by a dog. If that happens, it's the owner who holds all responsibility. The owner has to be the one to take charge and be in control of his/her dog. It would be a terrible thing if a dog is allowed to run out on its own and make its own decisions.

“What if it attacks someone or another animal, or it gets knocked down by a vehicle? On the other hand, don't go the extreme to cage and tie up your dog all the time. A dog that does not socialise will only become a monster,” he says.

Being a responsible owner also means getting your dog trained, says seasoned dog trainer Edmund de Run, who advocates training for all dogs, regardless of breed.

“You might understand your dog, but your dog doesn't understand you unless he's been trained. Every dog needs to be trained, it's just a matter of what level of training.

“If you have a dog, you can always get a trainer to assess your dog, and give his views. The trainer will be able to tell if he thinks you can control the dog. If you can't, it's better to find him a home where the owner can train and control him, than for him to end up attacking someone,” says de Run, who has been training dogs for the police force and the army since the 1960s.

De Run, who has long worked with working dogs (such as German shepherds, Belgian shepherds and rottweilers), adds that knowing a dog's history is also important.

“If you buy an adult dog, you have to know its history and background the environment he grew up in, who his previous owners are, what they are like. One way to easily do that is to make sure dogs are microchipped, so that their history can be easily tracked.”

Equally crucial is getting the dog from a responsible breeder, who breeds from proper bloodlines. Bad breeding, or too much in-breeding, he says, can often lead to dogs with bad temperament or aggressive and/or destructive behaviour.

Dog aggression made headlines on Tuesday after a jogger, 74-year-old Yip Sun Wah, was bitten in the neck and ear by a licensed three-year-old dog in his residential area at SS19, Subang Jaya, Selangor. He died on the spot.

The dog has been identified by the Veterinary Services Department (DVS) as a miniature bull terrier cross, a restricted breed in Malaysia. Such breeds (like the English bull terrier) are allowed to be kept as guard dogs provided they are given proper training.

In Yip's case, the dog owner has been slapped with a RM1,000 fine by MPSJ. The case is still being investigated by the police under Section 304(A) of the Penal Code for negligence to the extent of causing death. The dog is now with the Selangor Veterinary Services Department pending further action.

Seven dog breeds the akita, Neapolitan mastiff, American bulldog, dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Japanesa tosa and the American pit bull have been banned from import and export activities in Malaysia. DVS imposed the ban last April after they were deemed to be “unmanageable or possibly dangerous”.

But banning the breed is not a solution, says German dog trainer Juergen Knobel.

“It won't stop smugglers from bringing the dogs in. People who want the dogs will still find a way to get them. The only difference is they will probably have to pay twice the price. It only makes the smugglers richer,” he says.

Knobel, who has had some 45 years of handling and training dogs, adds that it's not the breed but the handler who determines whether a dog ends up being dangerous.

“I have trained more than 35 pit bulls, and they have never bitten anyone. in the hands of people who know how to handle them, they are harmless dogs.

“Over here, you keep hearing how these dogs attack people. In Europe, many families have pit bulls, but you hardly ever hear of such cases,” he says.

In Germany, for instance, those who want to keep pit bulls have to attend a special school where they are first taught how to handle and train the dogs. “It's like getting a driver's licence. If you can't handle the dog, you can't have it,” he says.

Dog ownership also comes with serious legal repercussions, says lawyer and MBPJ councillor Derek Fernandez.

Fernandez explains that when things go awry, action can be taken under three branches of the law criminal law, civil law and municipal by-laws. For example, dog owners can be charged under provisions of the Penal Code for criminal negligence. Under municipal by-laws, they can be fined.

“Further, under the civil law, a victim of a dog attack also has common law rights. They can sue the dog owner and claim compensation. If there is loss of life, even a claim of up to RM1mil or RM2mil would be reasonable. It should act as a deterrent human lives shouldn't be cheap.

“Under the law, every dog owner has to exercise reasonable care over his dog. And if he knows that he owns a dangerous breed, then the standards for reasonable care is higher, isn't it?” he says.

The trainers concur that ownership is not a subject to be taken lightly. As Anthony puts it: “If you don't want to do your homework, and if you're not willing to commit, don't get a dog. Get an alarm system.”

Olympics: 'Dog ate my ticket', says US shooter Rhode

History-chasing US shooter Kim Rhode has had a rough and lonely build-up to her Olympic bid after flight cancellations forced her to miss her team training camp... before her puppy ate her ticket.

Rhode, seeking to become the first American to win individual medals at five Summer Games in a row, went to the airport in Los Angeles on Friday intending to fly to Copenhagen in Denmark for the training camp.

But the first leg of her flight -- to Newark -- was twice cancelled and as timed ticked away she eventually flew direct to London, arriving on Tuesday.

Speaking during training at the sun-baked Royal Artillery Barracks on Wednesday, Rhode said she was tired after her ordeal but was upbeat about her Olympic chances.

"I've had a little bit of a problem with the airlines getting here," said the 33-year-old.

"I stayed home, trained there and then came directly from LA to London so essentially I didn't get all the time adjustment. I'm a little jet-lagged but other than that, things are good."

Adding to the stress, Rhode's husband initially could not find his passport and her four-month-old white puppy devoured her re-issued ticket.

"My husband lost his passport and couldn't find it. My dog ate my ticket.... I know that sounds crazy but I can honestly say and I have the pictures to prove that really happened. It's not just an excuse."

The missing passport was located and the ticket was reprinted after it was eaten by the toy poodle called Norman -- dubbed "hell on wheels" by Rhode.

When asked whether the dramas of the past few days had affected her, a relaxed Rhode said: "It's like anything. You just roll with the punches and hope for the best."

"You can't really let it get to you. If you did, you'd be in trouble before you even started so you just have to let things go," she said, adding she had even managed to pack in moving three pianos and buying a car in the run-up to her departure.

"I feel tired because I'm jet-lagged but I think that through it all I have five or six days to adjust, be better prepared sleep-wise essentially, which is right now what's affecting me the most but I'm essentially happy with where I'm at at this moment," she said.

Rhode, taking part in the women's trap and the skeet, said she was looking forward to the arrival of her team-mates on Wednesday, ahead of the start of shooting events on Saturday.

"It is very different to be travelling, going through all the things by yourself. At the Olympics you have the support of everybody, everybody's going through the same things so it's been a bit of a challenge," she said.

"Some of them sent me some well wishes on Twitter and Facebook. I know they're having a blast in Denmark. They've gone and seen ZZ Top and have been training really hard -- a lot of team-building going on there. I'm kind of bummed that I missed that," she added.

Rhode, seeking her fifth straight medal and her third gold overall, said her chance to make history was in the back of her mind but she was feeling relaxed.

"There's a certain added element of pressure when you come to an event like the Olympics to begin with. When you add in the achievements there's an element of pressure. However, as it's my fifth I'm feeling very comfortable with it.

I was flipping through my Golden Retriever Guide Dog Puppy In Training, Apache’s folder and came across a dog training checklist. Actually this wasn’t any old dog training checklist because Apache is training to be a guide dog. This was a list detailing 18 things your guide dog puppy should know before he goes in for formal guide dog training.

As puppy raisers we receive our guide dog puppies in training at around 7 weeks of age and from that point we work on their socialization, obedience, house manners, etc. until they are approximately 18 months old. At 18 months we return our puppies to the Guide Dog school where they continue their “formal” education for another 6 months. After about 6 months our puppies are matched with a visually impaired partner and the 2 work together as a guide dog team until the guide dogs retirement.

Dog Training Checklist

I work hard on my guide dog puppy’s obedience, socialization and house manners and by the time my puppy is 14 months of age I try to have all 18 items on the dog training checklist marked off. Why 14 months? Because sometimes a puppy in training can get turned in as early as 14 months of age.

How Did Dublin Do With This Dog Training Checklist?

Of course Dublin was perfect when he started his formal guide dog training a few months ago Honestly, I would answer yes to all of the above questions for Dublin, but I would not say he totally mastered all of the above.

Dublin was good at the sit/stay and down stays, but if you threw in the right distraction he may not be able to hold it for 3/5 minutes. Although he did very well with his sit/down stays when we attended guide dog obedience class at the Sylmar campus. His other trouble spot was “can your dog walk on a loose leash while passing other dogs”. The answer is yes, but some dogs distracted him more than others. We worked very hard on both of these areas and saw a lot of improvement in Dublin. As I said I would say “yes” as my answer to the questions, but he had not yet mastered everything.

Remembering Soo, the service dog

Farewell Soo, loyal companion and dear friend.

THERE was great sadness in my home last week. Soolam, my senior service dog, was put down. He was 13. The decision to euthanise Soo, as my other dogs and I fondly knew him, was not at all easy.

The move was quickly reached when the Golden Retriever could no longer stand or walk. He could not even eat his meals without throwing up.

However, everything about Soo’s final journey on earth turned out to be as intriguing and uncanny as the day when he first arrived.

He was barely two months old then. The pup was a gift from a couple who were doctors. The purpose was to see if a retriever could make a good service dog.

Friend for life: The writer spending precious moments with Soo before he was euthanised.

He needed to be fed as many as four times a day. I had to clean up after a dog that seemed to have an endless supply of poo.

The most difficult part, however, was to grab the pup and put him back in his crate. Fortunately, his senior canine partners literally lent their paws to solve the problem.

Soo had a knack of chasing the big dogs around the house. One of them would cleverly use the situation to dash back to me so that I could grab Soo.

The experience of raising and training Soo helped to psyche me up. And as for Soo, he went on to become a service dog that was parallel to none.

He was the perfect companion to attend meetings with. He’d been to church numerous times and even stayed completely unnoticed at government meetings. Some of the chairpersons discovered his presence only after the event.

He has helped me in unusual places, too. These include in the toilet at the United Nations building in Kuala Lumpur (when my shoe was out of reach and the soap fell on the floor).

He also sat through a serious discussion with people with AIDS at the Malaysian AIDS Council.

On top of all these, Soo had appeared scores of times in the media which included newspapers, TV and radio. He was the main star of a special video which featured my service dogs.

Once when I was caught in a 30-minute thunderstorm in a forest, Soo chose to get drenched with me in the heavy downpour rather than seek shelter elsewhere.

In his more than a decade of service, Soo relished his car rides the most – so much so that I became his private chauffeur. We must have travelled thousands of kilometres over the decade and only once, in all those years, did he throw up in the back seat.

Once our adventure led us all the way to Penang on a gruelling 24-hour trip where Soo performed and wowed several hundred people at a dog event with his service dog skills.

On that fateful Sunday morning, an extremely feeble Soo looked straight into my eyes. It was as if he was telling me to be strong for him and do the right thing to painlessly end his suffering.

He never once whimpered or flinched. He took every opportunity to lay his head on my shoulder or hands whenever I was by his side.

Despite the pain, Soo remained resolute and dignified in the back seat of my car during his final journey to the veterinarian. He was on my lap with his head held high as I wheeled into the clinic.

I made sure that my hero fell asleep before he entered into eternal sleep. The clinic didn’t charge me anything for putting a great dog down.

Another doctor, who is an expert in dog show winning breeds, offered to bury Soo in his yard at home.

My king, I’m proud to say, is now privileged to be the only retriever laid to rest with other national and international champion Doberman and German Shepherd Dog breeds that have crossed over the rainbow bridge before him.

Even more amazing is the fact that Soo is buried in the home of the mother of my latest and youngest service dog candidate, Dobe Ace Zhar the Doberman.

Last Saturday, Zhar and I were at an international dog show in KL with more than 200 dogs from all over Asia. And although I was the only person in a wheelchair there, Zhar stuck close to me much like Soo used to do during happier days.

And by a very strange coincidence, Zhar kept climbing up on my lap several times as if to say: “Don’t worry, you’re safe now. I’m with you.”

Angels don’t always come with wings; sometimes they have tails, even if it happens to be a rather short one.

BOULDER, Colorado (AP) - Harbor has over two feet (60 centimeters) of ears.

On Tuesday, the black-and-tan coonhound from Boulder, Colorado, gets the 2012 Guinness World Records title for "longest ears on a living dog."

His left ear is 12.25 inches (31.12 centimeters) long and his right is 13.5 inches (34.29 centimeters) long.

Owner Jennifer Wert says when her 8-year-old was a puppy, he would trip on his ears and roll down stairs.

These days, Wert says people often stop them to ask questions, take photos or tug on his ears.

Tigger, a bloodhound from Illinois who died in 2009, still holds the record for longest ears ever. One was 13.5 inches (34.29 centimeters) long, the other 13.75 inches (34.92 centimeters) long.

Coonhounds use their ears to help with scent.

50 dogs put their best paw forward as they vie for top honours at speciality show

GERMAN Shepherd lovers gathered at the SJK (C) Peng Bin in Bukit Tengah, Bukit Mertajam, Penang, for the speciality show organised by the German Shepherd Dog Club of Malaysia.

The show, held for the second time by the club, attracted about 50 German Shepherds from various parts of the country.

The dogs were evaluated under various classes — puppy (six to 12 months), junior (12 to 18 months), youth (18 to 24 months), adult (24 months and above) and Malaysian bred (above six months whelped locally).

They were divided into male and female categories.

The show was judged by Louis Donald, specially flown in from Australia, who has been involved in German Shepherd dog shows for 48 years.

Donald has been a judge for such shows in England, South Africa, India, Italy, Singapore, the Philippines, New Zealand, Taiwan, Indonesia, Thailand and Hong Kong.

Sinus Vom Eichemplatz, at 25 months, was judged the best male German Shepherd.

Its owner Chong Lee Leong, 38, a businessman from Bukit Mertajam, said he was very happy that his canine had again come in first. It had previously won twice in other shows.

In the female category, 20-month-old Famy was declared champion.

Its owner Chee Ang Seang, 54, a businessman from Tanjung Bungah, said Famy had also won twice previously in other shows.

“I was confident she would make it based on her performance,” he added.

Club president Lawrance Lee said there was an increased interest in German Shepherds in the country.

“This can be seen in the quality of dogs in our Malaysian show rings today, and the feedback and participation on our online web pages,” he said.

Donald said the show was very well organised and luckily the rain stopped after an hour of heavy downpour during the recent event.

“Overall, I was very pleased with the quality of the dogs and the number which took part in the show. The breed is going on well here in Malaysia.

“I was in Malaysia 30 years ago and saw tremendous increase of the breed here then,” he added.

He said it was his second time here on the club’s invitation as judge.

Shape magazine will also be running Best Dressed Pet Contest, Most Photogenic Pet(s) & Owner Contest and Best Pet & Owner Lookalike Contest.

The Malaysia Cat Club will also be present with cat exhibitions and fashion shows. Doggie fashion shows will be presented by Pet Fashion.

There will be interesting talks given by vets on grooming, as well as diet tips for cats and dogs. A canine myofunctional therapist and animal communicator, whose booth is called Happy Dogz, will also be giving a talk on the healing benefits of reiki for animals.

Dog demonstrations will also be held, apart from workshops on topics such as Getting To Know Your Pet’s Behaviour and Baking For Your Pets.

As part of their CSR programme, Petz Unleashed is providing booths for free to animal rescue organisation Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better, and shelters such as H.O.P.E Johor.

Among one of the many contests Petz Unleashed ran onwww.petzunleashed.com was for the most innovative idea to raise funds from a booth. The winner, S. Kogila Vani, 30, proposed to use her booth as a pet bakery, selling a range of dog biscuits, cakes and cookies made of wholesome ingredients for both cats and dogs such as Apple Crunch Pupcakes, Peanutty Pupsicles, Bad Breath Banishers, Banana Biscotti and Carob Loaf, just to name a few.

To help the NGOs with their adoption drive, Vani is also offering people who adopt animals coupons that will entitle them to freebies and discounts when they show proof of adoption.

Cats included

Cat lovers won’t feel left out at the Petz Pow Wow. Malaysia Cat Club or Kelab Kuching Malaysia will also be participating.

Kelab Kucing Malaysia (KKM), founded in 1979, is a non-profit organisation that aims to protect the uniqueness of the cat breeds and create a loving and caring environment for all cats.

Exciting features lined up for cat lovers include a Cat Fancy Dress contest and Best Decorated Cat Cage contest.

“In keeping with our objectives to promote animal welfare, we will be holding a cat adoption drive, and will be giving talks on proper diet for cats, grooming and conducting a vaccination programme,” said Kelab Kucing Malaysia president Khalid Rashid.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have reached a dead end in their investigations into the man who was caught on tape using brute force on a poodle

Federal CID director Comm Datuk Seri Bakri Zinin said they were not able to identify the man in the video.

He added that unless police received new leads or tip-off from the public, they might not be able to identify the man.

The Bukit Aman CID was tasked to investigate the case.

A video of the man abusing the dog raised the ire of canine lovers who began a nationwide hunt to identify him.

PETALING JAYA: A video of a man abusing a dog has sparked a heated response from canine lovers on social networking site Facebook and triggered a nationwide hunt for him.

In the widely-circulated video, the unidentified man, believed to be a Malaysian, is seen using brutal force on a poodle in his attempt to get the dog to stand up on its hind legs.

Some of those who viewed the video have said the man is a Malaysian.

Several people also claimed to know his close friends.

Harsh lessons: The poodle being abused by the unidentified man in the video.

In one scene, when the dog returned to standing on its four legs, the man in frustration gave it a violent smack, sending the poodle flying.

The Facebook user who uploaded the 15-minute video last Friday said she had discovered it in a thumbdrive which she had found in a Kuala Lumpur shopping mall.

Thousands of animal lovers, shocked and angered by the man’s act, immediately called for his arrest.

“This is an outrage! Swift action ought to be taken on this man,” one Facebook user commented.

“The guy in the video is crazy to have done such a thing to the helpless animal,” another said. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is getting complaints and leads from callers.

“We have been receiving a lot of calls on the matter but we have no confirmation on the man’s identity,” SPCA office manager M. Shelvy said.

She also asked those with information to call the SPCA at 03-42565312 or 03-42535179.

KUANTAN: The Kuantan Animal Rescue & Education (KARE) group will be organising the 4th Doggie Open Day on Nov 14 in Taman Gelora with more exciting activities awaiting pet owners.

Organising chairperson Joyce Mah said the annual charity event from 8am onwards, would provide an opportunity particularly for dog lovers in Kuantan to bring their pets out for a fun-filled day.

Mah said there would be a dogathon, doggie games, a children colouring contest and stalls selling recycled items, food, drinks, pet products, cakes, souvenirs and others.

“Entry fee for the dogathon is RM35 and the participants will be given a KARE T-shirt and some goodies for their pets.

Furry friends: Dog owners will get a chance to let their pet dogs socialise with one another during the upcoming event.

“Each doggie games and children colouring contest are also priced at RM10 each,” she said, adding that proceeds from the event would be used for the spaying and neutering programme of stray dogs and cats.

Mah said the aims of the event were to reduce the rising population of strays and abandoned dogs and cats in Kuantan and to create awareness of dog ownership responsibilities.

“As pet owners, we must take care of our dogs and cats but we must also ensure that their offsprings are well taken care of.

“If we are not prepared to look after them, spaying and neutering is the best solution,” she said, adding that KARE would continue to organise programmes from time to time to raise funds for the welfare of strays.

Mah said public and corporate citizen’s support is essential for the event to be successful.

She said KARE was a voluntary organisation formed under the Association of Sustainable Kuantan to educate the younger generations on proper caring of animals.
