A Day in the Life of a Suitcase

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a suitcase? My name is Sam. I am a suitcase.

My owner, Mrs. Smart, bought me online for her husband, Mr. Attitude. I was reunited with my sister, Penny, the purse, who Mrs. Smart already owns. Mrs. Smart was impressed with my vital statistics. I was handmade of Italian polished calf-skin leather for its soft, supple feel. I have reinforced handles, double stitched seams, a convenient size, and large wheels for generous clearance. My extended zipper makes packing easy. All of these features made me a good gift for Mr. Attitude.

Mr. Attitude travels a lot. He was planning for a week long trip to Denver. Since the type of weather was uncertain at this time of the year, he needed to pack for both cool and warm weather. This meant that I would be carrying two kinds of clothes. I am very roomy and could hold everything Mr. Attitude needed to pack. My extended zipper allowed me to open almost flat for easy access.

I was stuffed with shirts, pants, shoes, socks, a sweater, and gloves. I have a big appetite, but felt like I couldn't breathe because I was sooo full. It is not easy to hold enough clothes for the equivalent of two weeks. But, it was no problem for my double stitched seams to hold up to the strain.

Mr. Attitude woke up late since his alarm clock didn't go off as expected. He hurriedly dressed, grabbed his car keys, and headed out the door. He threw me in the trunk of the car to drive the 20 miles to the airport. To get there sooner, Mr. Attitude drove 80 miles an hour while weaving in and out of traffic. A traffic cop saw him and pulled him over. Feeling stressed by the delay, Mr. Attitude treated the cop rudely, who further delayed him, and gave him a speeding ticket. To make things worse, Mr Attitude had to park in the far parking lot located out somewhere around Outer Mongolia. My retractable handles and large wheels allowed him to safely cross the parking lot without mishap as he raced to catch his plane.

Joe, the baggage handler, was not quick enough to take me off Mr. Attitude's hands. After a thorough tongue lashing, Mr. Attitude stormed off to catch his plane. After he left, Joe and another baggage handler, Frank, were talking about what happened. Frank said, "Joe, I don't how you took all of that abuse. He called you everything but a human being! You just smiled and said, Yes, sir yes, sir." Joe answered, "That's right but it's no big deal. Mr. Attitude may be going to Denver but, Sam, his suitcase, is going to Rio! Isn't life wonderful?

The moral of the story is that it pays to have great luggage and a great attitude!

Not even an hour has passed after leaving Seville but as we turn off the main road another enchanted world comes into view. It is still early morning and the sun has yet to dissipate the mist as we drive down the winding mountain road surrounded, as it is, by thick oak and chestnut woods.

And then there it is, the village of Alájar spread along the majestic valley like a red lizard lying in the sun. Alájar, arabic for stone, derives its name from an imposing stone promontory above the village that is crowned by the Peña de Arias Montero monastery. This idyllic village lies in one of the most beautiful valleys of the almost unknown natural park "Picos de Aroche y Sierra de Aracena", 80 km northwest of Seville. Spared by mass tourism, this pearl of Andalusia is also home to "Jabugo ham", one of the best hams in the world. The small black pigs with their long thin legs feed on the fallen acorns during the autumn and winter months.

Still in awe of this breathtaking beauty, we turn left through flowering meadows, then along a narrow trail beside a centuries old stone wall until a small river crosses the track. The sign Molino Rio Alájar encourages us to drive through the shallow water, frogs jumping to either side.

The Molino's six stone cottages house 2 to 6 people and blend in perfectly with the location. Decor is rustic, rather than luxurious, but still full of charming details and utterly comfortable. All materials and furnishings used during construction were taken from neighbouring country houses giving the interiors a cosy feel.

Each cottage has its own fully equipped kitchen, although given the excellent cuisine of the region and the large amount of highly recommended restaurants nearby you might not get a chance to use it. Run on a self catering basis the Molino Rio Alájar does not serve breakfast.

We recommend that you book a breakfast basket for the day of arrival that includes local specialities such as mountain honey, hand cut Jamón, fabulous Caña de Lomo (air cured pork filet), butter, preserves and freshly baked bread. For the remaining days of your stay, Peter and Monika will have given you all necessary directions where to buy fresh local produce.

But you might not have this chance once you taste José Vicente's dishes in Aracena, just a fascinating 10 km drive along the valley. This small and intimate restaurant has a menu but we suggest letting José have full reign and one of his surprises made from the freshest seasonal ingredients that will leave your taste buds reeling.

Besides the fabulous ham try the Salmorejo (cold tomato soup) with slices of tuna sautéed in Jabugo lard. José Vicente cooks with everything local nature provides. In autumn and spring his wild mushroom dishes accompanied by scrambled eggs with wild asparagus are not to be missed. It is the combination of tastes of this simple cuisine that will delight the most knowledgeable gourmet.

Back on the terrace of your cottage at the Molino Rio Alájar the fragrance of the Andalusia night and the untouched nature will make your forget all worldly things that might have bothered you at home. In colder winter nights a fireplace and heated floor will welcome you inside the cosy cottages.

You might want to spend the next day at the pool or perhaps take a 1 ½ hour hike from Alájar to Linares de la Sierra. A small mountain creek there will refresh you on hot summer days.

Touristy Travel Advice for People Who Don't Want to Look Like a Tourist

You know those big, double-decker tour bussed that you see in the movies, or even in some of the bigger cities here in the states... Those... Are...Awesome. A great number of your destinations are probably locations frequented by tourists... Which those bussed... Go to. Here's the deal: Most of these buses offer 24 to 48 hour passes for around $35 US, and within that time, you can hop on the bus at any of the designated spots, ride along, while listening to a guided tour, until you get to one of your destinations. Simply hop off, get it done, go back to the stop and catch the next bus (many of destinations you go to will even have discounted entry rates if you show them your bus pass). And take your time experiencing that place, as most of those tours have bussed that come around every ten to twenty minutes. The guided tour will pick up right where you left off, and off you go to your next destination. It's a tour, and transportation to all of the places you gotta go. Great idea for at least the first day or two in a big city, with lots of places to see.

If available, always try and make sure you get one with a live travel guide, instead of a prerecorded one. Pay attention to where the guide is located on the bus (in good weather, they're almost always on the top level). Sit as near to them as possible, so whenever there's a break in their spiel (stuck in traffic, or they just ran out of things to say), feel free to ask them your own questions.... Now you have your own personal, local, travel advisor.

Be on the lookout for Tics. Not ticks, those little clingy buggers, Tourist Information Centers. They're almost always in the town center, or near tourist attractions. They are easy to spot, as they are almost always identified by a simple icon of the cursive lowercase letter "i". Obviously, it's the peoples' jobs that work there to help tourists such as yourself, with any questions they might have. Directions, closing times, restaurants, etc. They are also good places to pick up a detailed map of the area.

And the last touristy thing I am going to suggest. Take lots of pictures and video. Yes, people may go "ugh... Tourists" but, there's no better way to relive your travels than with photos. I have my travel photos as the screen saver for my computer at home! And I get such joy simply by seeing them scroll by, and reliving each and every memory.

And one little piece of amateur photo advice. Make sure you, or one of your group are actually in the damn things. Ever look at someone's vacation photos, and all they were were just pictures of random mountains and buildings without them in the photos? Boring huh? Might as well be looking at a coffee table book of randomness. And when you take the picture, make sure you have almost a closeup of the person from the waist up, with the greatness of whatever you're seeing in the background. The only thing worse than no people in a travel photo is having to tell people, "You see that tiny little silhouette the size of a pygmy marmoset there? That's me."

The Museo Del Prado in Rome

If you're planning school tours focusing on European art and culture, there's nowhere better to explore than Spain's Museo del Prado in central Madrid. It houses one of the world's finest collections of European art, stretching from the 12th century to the 19th century. Based on the former Spanish Royal Collection, and founded in 1785 as a museum of paintings and sculpture, it has become one of the most visited sites in the world - and a fertile ground to inspire students.

The Gallery's History

Originally commissioned by Charles III, the building was first intended to house the Natural History Cabinet. Luckily, Charles' grandson, Ferdinand VII, saw the potential and decided to use the building as a new Royal Museum of Paintings and Sculptures. The Royal Museum, soon known as the National Museum of Painting and Sculpture and subsequently the Museo del Prado, opened to the public for the first time in November 1819, with the double aim of showing the works of art that belonged to the Spanish Crown and to demonstrate to the rest of Europe that Spanish art was of equal merit to any other national school.

The Artworks in the Gallery

Students on school tours can view the gallery's collection, currently comprising around 7,600 paintings, 1,000 sculptures, 4,800 prints and 8,200 drawings, in addition to plenty of other types of art and historic documents. In 2012 the Museum will be displaying about 1300 works in the main buildings, while around 3,100 works are on temporary loan to various other museums and official institutions. Perhaps the best-known work on display for those on school tours to admire is Las Meninas by Velázquez. As well as his own works, the famous artist is credited with bringing much of the museum's collection of Italian masters to Spain.

The idea of a family vacation with kids once was a daunting concept, but with a few creative and practical tips we've discovered that it can be an awesome adventure, fun for the kids and fun for us too. The top five family holidays we've discovered in our years of travel are:

Theme Parks
These are always fun for kids, and I must admit, we adults quite enjoy them too. You can get great deals by booking your hotel early, and maximize your fun by planning out your activities beforehand. There are rides and exciting characters to meet for the younger ones, and you and your older ones will enjoy the more thrilling rides and shows. For the more adventurous at heart, there are a number of excellent theme parks worldwide, for example, a Disneyland in Japan, Hong Kong or France. This is a great opportunity to experience lots of fun in the context of a different culture. It is a good idea though to time your trip right. Standing in the long lines during extreme heat or cold is not anyone's idea of a good vacation.

The Beach
Beaches with their bright sun, endless sand and wavy water are a formula for immense family entertainment. There are stunning beaches worldwide with great family-oriented hotels to stay at. Before you pack your bags, make sure check if your hotel has a pool and kids activities. Our kids love the beach but the same routine can get boring. We've found terrific hotels that organize games for the kids like water polo and beach volley ball. It was great on out trip to see the kids make new friends through these activities, and a break for my husband and I from keeping them entertained, which was quite enjoyable for us too.

City Breaks
One of the greatest trips we've had with the kids is a visit to the capital city of Washington D.C. Our days were fun-packed with visits to museums like the Smithsonian, national monuments like the Thomas Jefferson memorial, and walks to beautiful places like Georgetown. We couldn't believe how much there was to do with over a hundred museums and monuments to visit, most of which were free! Younger kids might get bored quickly unless you keep them engaged throughout and keep the sight-seeing fast paced and varied.

Africa
There is no greater way to experience wildlife than in its natural environment. Kids of all ages love animals and the excitement of a Safari is tremendous fun for the family as a whole. Although it is important to consider vaccinations for international travel, documentation, and to exercise great care with the food and water you drink, for example clean bottled water vs. tap water, we will remember our trip to Africa with its fascinating cultures, stunning nature and diverse wildlife for years to come.

Cruise
Like beaches, there are cruises to and from lots of places in the world. There are cruises that last for days and cruises that last for weeks. Either way, they are a terrific family vacation because they are equipped to holistically cater to every age group and offer fun activities for you and the kids. We've loved going on cruises for their picturesque views, the thrill of being on the water, the excellent accommodations and entertainment and because, you can't really lose the kids.
