What you as dSLR user should know about f-stop and depth of field

The f/stop, also known as focal ratio, f-ratio, f-stop, is a ratio. The ratio is between the focal length of the lens and the diameter of the aperture in the lens. So when diameter of the aperture is 12.5mm of lens with 50 mm focal length, f-stop will be 50/12.5 = 4. Isn’t it simple maths???

A 100 mm focal length lens with an aperture setting of f/4 will have a pupil diameter of 25 mm. A 50 mm focal length lens with a setting of f/4 will have a pupil diameter of 12.5 mm. The 100 mm lens’s f/4 opening is larger than that of the 50 mm lens but both will produce the same illuminance in the focal plane when imaging an object of a given luminance. It doesn’t matter if you set that f/8 on a 20mm or a 400mm, or if the camera is film roll or recent dSLR.

Depth of field –One of the important aspects of photography

Do you like the above photography?( check the given link for photograph) Have you noticed anything about the background? It is blurred out, right? And maybe that is the reason you liked this photograph. There is no distraction; you give your total attention to housefly.

This image is result of shallow depth of field and that is where you need to know f-stop the most. Rather than going into the technical details I will simplify the use of f-stop to get proper depth of field.

Remember this simple thing; Depth of field increases with f-number. less number f-stop (e.g f/1.8, f/2) will give you shallow depth of field. How?? We need not to know. And High number f-stop (f/16, f/22) will catch every detail from near to infinity. Check the below Image to get better idea about how the depth of field changes with f-stop. All the other setting are same expect f-stop in the below photographs.

What number of f-stop to use and when

Rather than giving details of which f-stop to use for what type of photography. I will divide the all genre of photography in two type- shallow depth of field and deep depth of field

Shallow depth of field –

Portraits and wildlife are the best example where shallow depth of field will give you amazing pics. A beautiful smile on a cute girl’s face has total different effect when the background is blurred out. Same is true of wildlife photography, where the background is more distracting and so many times it have same colour as the subject have. Apart from these two, shallow depth of field is also used in abstract photography and some other special effects.

Lenses for shallow depth of field

If you ask me to name one lens that is affordable but still gives comparable results with higher ranged lenses. I will suggest you to go for 50 mm 1.8 D which you will get at 6000 INR. Both leading company canon and Nikon provide 50 mm 1.8 lens without inbuilt motor at approx same price. It requires a lot of practice and patience to get sharp image using manual focus, but today all the latest cameras come with inbuilt motor, so that is not a concern for you.

I will not go into details of lenses for wildlife photography, because if you are planning to buy one, that will cost you a fortune for sure.

Deep depth of field-

Dealing with deep depth of field is very easy, because almost everything you can see in the view finder is in focus. Landscape photography is the best example of deep depth of field. Check the below Image, did you notice that you can clearly see the details of the tree and at the same time the tower on the apartment is also not out of focus.

Architectural structures also require deep depth of field, because here you want to capture small details like carving on wall, designs and also the structure itself are so huge you cannot get sharp crispy images with shallow depth of field.

Smoke photography is also one of the areas where deep depth of field is required. Smoke don’t have a predefined path, maybe unpredictable nature of its path is what makes it exciting to click smoke.

Lenses for deep depth of field

Well do you need to buy one for this? Look inside your camera bag, you do have one there. Yes I am talking about kit lens, 18-55 mm VR. At 18 mm you can get really amazing landscapes. Some people argue that it cannot replace wide angle lenses, but in my opinion looking at the cost factor this lens is much better.

Having said all this, Image yourself walking around with your dSLR handing around your neck and you suddenly find something interesting, the moment will not last for long and you don’t have time to set your f-stop, focus, shutter speed, what will you do? Maybe you can try auto-mode, but if that’s what you want to use, don’t you think you should be having point and shoot camera in your hand?? Next time if you are in similar situation, keep your camera on f-stop 8-10, A Mode (Aperture Mode) with auto-focus on. This is setting you can use to take blind shot.

Smoke photography tutotial

After getting few request for tutorial of "smoke photography" here it is...
First of all, smoke photography is not as hard and complex as it is shown. It is very simple to click smoke and capture those amazing shapes the smoke creates. You just need right gears and lot lot of patience.
I am giving the list of the things you need for smoke photography

1. Black background - for that you can use dull black cloth. Even if it is your old used tee, don't worry about it...it is not going to show up in snap.

2. powerful torch - Must along with inbuilt flash of camera. If you have flash light with code to burn it from remote location it is better, but then person having all such gears won't be interested in reading this tutorial. :P

3. Obviously a camera, but it does not have to be dSLR only. any digicam will work fine.
and I don't have to mention incense and tray to collect the ash.

Arrangement -

Put the incense 1 foot away from your black background.Make sure your background is uniform enough. Incense should remain stead throughout the photo-shoot, so the natural design made from smoke is not disturbed. Put the torch below the incense in upward direction, such that it lit up the smoke that is seen in your view finder. In short part of the smoke which you want to capture should be well lit by torch light.

Using tripod to hold the camera is best option, but even if you don't have tripod it is ok. I used pile of books to put camera on. Improvisation :) :)

Camera setting

For dSLR- F stop - 15+ because smoke don't ask you about which way to go, so higher the f stop better.
and shutter speed from 1/60 to 1/100
manual focus. Please don't use auto-focus, because of very low light available camera gets confused, I think you don't want to waste time on that and end up missing the chance of clicking the beautiful shape of smoke.
But you need to take few shots in full light on auto-focus to get the focus right. Once you are satisfied, put the camera on manual focus. Don't change it then onwards.

Digital-cameras- If you have facility of manual mode, you are lucky enough. follow the above tip.
Those who don't have manual mode, you need enough light on smoke get camera's attention only on smoke. You can use extra torch for that. Once camera have focused on smoke, it will not waste much time on autofocus in future snaps.

Flash Light - on. dSLR - put it on "Full" mode instead of "ttl".

zoom enough to have your LCD/viewfinder filled with black background only. I always take photographs at 45-55mm range. Digital camera user can zoom 1.5x.

Hurray....you are ready to take the photos...
I will make another post about the tutorial of editing. till that enjoy clicking.
At last but not the least, You will not get very good results in first few clicks. So please don't give up. Check the photos and find-out where you need improvement.

Brightness/Contrast adjustment control is widely used in photography...Is it the best option?...It is a lousy control used by rank amateurs.So its better not to use it for the overall adjustment of an image.If done will be like trying to sculpt detail in a statue with a sledgehammer.Hence the best option is to do with Levels and Curves.It makes everything brighter or darker and more or less contrasty.That rarely makes an image look its better.....As what we see here.....
