The fastest way (usually) to drive around Puerto Rico is to take the toll roads (autopistas). This is fine if you want to just get from A to B as quickly as possible, but if you have the time, I urge you to explore the roads beyond the autopista. You won’t be disappointed and will be rewarded with; great drives, awesome views and the chance to discover some of Puerto Rico’s better kept secrets.

To get you started here are a few routes to check out:

PR143 Barranquitas to Toro Negro (part of the Ruta Panoramica)

The Ruta Panoramica crosses the heart of Puerto Rico from east to west, offering twisting mountain roads with amazing views of the whole of Puerto Rico. The route starts in Guayama on the south east coast of Puerto Rico and ends on the west coast in Mayaguez.

For anyone considering driving the complete Ruta Panoramica; you need at least 2-3 days to do the drive justice. For those looking for a taste of the Ruta; then spend a day driving a section of the route.

One such section is Road 143 just south of Barranquitas heading west towards Toro Negro. This drive is easily accessible from the San Juan metro area and offers amazing views of both the north and south coasts of the island (weather permitting) as well as awesome views of the central mountains and valleys.

Unfortunately you will not find many designated look out spots to enjoy the amazing views so just pull over whenever you can. There is though one really great spot to stop; Mirado Villalba Orocovis. Here you will find ample parking space, covered picnic tables, kid’s playground, bathrooms and small café. Oh and did I mention the amazing views of both the south and north coasts.

Other nearby attractions include:

Salto Dona Juana (Dona Juana Falls) on Rd 149 (this is a narrow stretch of twisting road, so drive carefully)
Toro Verde Zip lines
Cerro de Punta at 4, 390 ft

PR 15 Cayey – Guayama

Granted to get to this drive, you will need to take Hwy 52 south, but once you get close to Cayey watch out for the signs for PR 15 and you will not be disappointed.

The road will take you from Cayey to Guayama on the south coast with views of the mountains surrounding Cayey in all their greenery and breath taking views of the east coast and south coast as you head down towards Guayama.

The twisting mountain road is in good condition but I would recommend pulling over and allowing any fast local drivers to pass so that you can enjoy the views at a more leisurely pass. As with most of the routes mentioned here, you will need to just pull over when you have a chance to enjoy the views as there is no official look out spots on this route.

Nearby Attractions:

From Guayama, you could head west towards Salinas (several seafood restaurants) and Ponce. Or east towards Manuabo to visit the Faro de Punta Tuna (lighthouse)

PR 901 & PR 3 Yabaucoa – Maunabo – Guayama

This drive will take you along the south east coast of Puerto Rico with views of Vieques and Culebra islands. The quickest route from San Juan is to take Hwy 52 south and then PR 30 to Yabaucoa (toll roads). If you have more time then consider heading to Fajardo and then driving the east coast of Puerto Rico on the old Route 3.

From Yabaucoa head south on PR 901. The road twists as it climbs offering great views of the coastline and the islands of Vieques and Culebra. Along this stretch of road you will find several cliff side restaurants with ocean views, if you are looking for somewhere to eat.

As you head towards Maunabo you have the option to take the Vicente Morales Lebrón tunnel, but if you want to continue to hug the coast line, skip the tunnel and stay on Rd 901.

Once in Maunabo you can take a short detour on PR 760 to the Faro de Punta Tuna (Maunabo Lighthouse) and even more great coastal views.

From Manuabo continue along PR 3 (also known as Hwy 53) towards Guayama

PR 102 Joyuda

Just east of Cabo Rojo, PR 102 skirts the coastline north towards Mayaguez. The sea views alone make this a great drive but PR 102 is also well known for its concentration of Sea Food Restaurants in Joyuda. You can’t miss them, small roadside shacks, bars and restaurants all serving freshly caught seafood with or without ocean views. Just be prepared for heavy traffic if you plan to check out Joyuda on a weekend or holiday.

Nearby Attractions:
Cabo Rojo Lighthouse
Combate Beach
Boqueron Beach
Mayaguez Zoo

Other Routes to Check Out

PR 10 Arecibo to Ponce
Consider stopping at Dos Bocas Lake on a weekend or holiday to enjoy the lake and one of the lakeside restaurants

PR 187 San Juan to Rio Grande
Ocean views, beaches and the famous road side kiosks in Pinones make this drive worthwhile.

As for places to eat, if you don’t have any places in mind, do what we do when we head out on a road trip; just look for the places that are busy with locals and you will stand a good chance of finding a great place to eat. Also, don’t forget those road side stalls for some traditional Puerto Rican snack foods.

Held every year during the week leading up to Ash Wednesday, the Ponce Carnival in Puerto Rico is a HUGE celebration attended by thousands of locals and visitors to the island. This year’s event takes place from February 15th to 21st.

The Carnaval de Ponce as it is known locally is one of the oldest carnivals, with its roots dating back to 1858. It marks the beginning of Lent and the week long celebration culminates with a fake funeral procession and the Burial of the Sardine.

Like the recent San Sebastian Street Festival, one of the highlights of the Ponce Carnival is the Vejigantes. The Vejiantes are demon-like characters, wearing brightly colored papier-mâché horned masks and capes who parade through the streets with their vejigas (dried-up cow bladders that look like balloons), and hitting festival goers as they pass by. The hitting is said to scare away those evil spirits…

Ponce’s main square will be alive with colorful parades, vibrant bomba y plena music, traditional Puerto Rican food and crowds of people enjoying the party atmosphere. The majority of the parades and events take place in the evening during week days and Saturday. Sunday the events start around 1pm

Full schedule for the Ponce Carnival based on La Perla Del Sur:

Joyuda on the west coast of Puerto Rico has been on my radar ever since arriving in Puerto Rico. Why? Because whenever I have asked for recommendations on great seafood restaurants, the number ONE answer I get is; ‘You have to check out road 102 in Joyuda’.

So that’s exactly what I did a few weeks back when my sister was visiting from England. We set off early in the morning and checked out a few beaches around Cabo Rojo and then made a beeline for PR 102 for a late afternoon lunch stop.

PR 102 runs along the west coast of Puerto Rico for about 11 miles from Cabo Rojo north to Mayaguez, but it is the short stretch of road opposite Isla Ratones (Rat Island) where the seafood restaurants, bars and kiosks are located.

Along this stretch of PR102 you will find ocean front restaurants that are virtually on the water as well as restaurants on the opposite side of the road that may or may not have a sea view.

Personally after driving all the way from San Juan, I wanted a restaurant that was on the waterfront and as it was a Monday, options were a limited (a lot of restaurants were closed).

Fortunately the Island View Restaurant was open (bonus, it has its own car park) and it did not disappoint. The restaurant is right on the waterfront with a great view of Isla Ratones from the main dining area or the outside covered deck. We chose to eat outside and enjoyed delicious fresh seafood, washed down with some local beer and enjoyed the views of Isla Ratones and the distant horizon.

During the meal we noticed some thrashing in the water close to the restaurant and were intrigued by what was going on. It turns out that the restaurant is a popular spot for the local tarpon fish that are kindly fed by the kitchen staff. We also got a visit from a couple of large pelicans, also looking for a seafood handout.

It was still too early for sunset but I can imagine that this area would be a great spot to watch the sun go down.

On weekends and holidays Joyuda gets really busy for lunch and dinner, so you should factor some extra time for traffic if you plan on heading there on a Saturday/Sunday/holiday.

If you are OK with a limited number of restaurants to choose from then head to Joyuda during the week, it will be a lot quieter and finding parking will be a lot easier.

If you are OK with doing a lot of driving, then a day trip to Joyuda is possible, but if you have the time then try to spend a few days over on the west coast, you won’t be disappointed.

What: Joyuda Seafood Restaurants
Where: all along PR102, Joyuda (opposite Isla Ratones)
When: Monday – Sunday (more restaurant open on a weekend)

This week, the 2012 San Sebastian Street Festival (Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián) will turn Old San Juan into one HUGE street party. The four day event kicks off on Thursday January 12 at 5pm and ends late on Sunday January 15 (well actually Jan 16 at 2am). Visitors and people from all over the island will descend in their thousands to experience at first hand the largest festival in Puerto Rico.

San Sebastian Street and beyond

The balconies along San Sebastian Street will be filled with people taking advantage of the high vantage points as the parades and throngs of people stream along the parade route, following the vejigantes, the gigantes, and the cabezudos, while dancing and singing to the festival’s beat.

Away from the main parade route you will find around 300+ local artisans set up around the Cuartel de Ballajá and Plaza de San José.

The official main music stage will be set up at Plaza del Quinto Centenario, but you will also find musicians and dance groups taking part in impromptu performances in and around the streets of Old San Juan.

What to Expect

During the day (Saturday and Sunday) you will find a slighter calmer atmosphere than on an evening, with more families enjoying the daytime festival activities.

As evening falls a younger crowd takes to the streets to make the most of the lifting of the ‘drinking alcohol in public’ ban in and around the streets of Calle San Sebastian, with the partying continuing until 2am at which point a police curfew is enforced.

Thursday and Friday the festival starts around 5pm and continues until 2am. On Saturday and Sunday the activities will start early in the morning and end again at 2am.

The San Sebastian Street Festival Parade

One of the main events of the San Sebastian Street Festival is the parade; think Mardi Gras or the Nottinghill Carnival in London but with a Puerto Rican twist.

The parades are scheduled to start at 5pm on Thursday and Friday and at 9am, 1pm and 3pm on Saturday and Sunday. The parades will start at Abraham Lincoln School, continue down along San Sebastian Street and end at Quinto Centenario Plaza.

The highlights of the parades are the vejigantes (clown-like characters, wearing brightly colored masks), the gigantes, and the cabezudos (large comical, paper mâché heads that typically depict people from Puerto Rican history), that head along the parade route dancing and singing to the sounds of Puerto Rican music. This is where having a high vantage point gives you a distinct advantage of seeing the parade in all its glory.

For those of you who don’t have the option of a balcony view, you can either follow along with the parade of just pick the best spot available and watch the parade go by.

Note: This is a HUGE festival and Old San Juan will be heaving with thousands of people both day and night so here are a few tips for surviving the San Sebastian Street Festival:

Traffic chaos – roads in and out of Old San Juan will be very congested. If you are not staying in Old San Juan and want to attend the festival, consider taking the bus from Condado / Isla Verde or the Hato Rey or Catano Ferry.

It will be Hot – temperatures will be in the mid 80’s during the day and mid to low 70’s in the evening, so wear comfortable clothes and keep well hydrated.

Only take what you think is necessary.

You are probably better off taking cash for purchases.

If you are with a group of people, make sure you have arranged a meeting point in case someone gets lost from the group (preferably a meeting point away from the main festival activities).

If you plan on being at the festival all day; PACE YOURSELF….

Remember the festival will end at 2am (police curfew) each night, but if you are not staying in Old San Juan, you will need to find out when the last buses / ferries will be running.

Puerto Rico was just recently voted one of the top winter destinations by Travel and Leisure and Christmas in Puerto Rico is a really magical time. The Christmas season starts immediately after Thanksgiving and continues well into January with celebrations and festivals throughout the island.

If you are here in Puerto Rico during this Christmas period here are a few things to look out for.

Traditional Christmas Events

La Feria
La Feria (The fair), starts before Thanksgiving and runs throughout the Christmas period up until January 8, 2012. La Feria takes place in the parking area of the Hiram Bithorn Stadium, close to Plaza Las Americas Mall. You can expect to see typical carnival rides for all ages,as well as game stalls, food stalls and music.

Midnight mass at the Cathedral in Old San Juan
Nothing says Christmas more than celebrating midnight mass and if you happen to be in San Juan on December 24, then one of the best places to celebrate is the Cathedral in Old San Juan. The service will be in Spanish, but you will be able to experience a traditional mass celebrating the birth of Jesus.

If you are looking for a service in English, check with your hotel as they should be able to direct you to the nearest church that will have an English mass.

Old San Juan Christmas Tree and Lights
Old San Juan at night becomes even more magical during Christmas, with the narrow cobbled stone streets illuminated with Christmas lights and Plaza de Armas showcasing the Old San Juan Christmas Tree. The Christmas lights in Old San Juan are usually switched on around the end of November, beginning of December and will stay illuminated until well into January 2012.

Christmas Boat Parade
This is a relatively new event, but one that looks like it will become a tradition. Local boat owners deck their boats out with Christmas lights and sail them around San Juan Bay. The parade starts at Club Nautica in San Juan and heads along the bay towards the San Juan Gate and Paseo de La Princesa. This years event takes place on December 10th 6pm – 8pm

Three Kings Day
Three Kings Day (Jan 6) is almost as big a celebration as Christmas Day, where family and friends gather together to celebrate. For the kids they wake up to presents under their bed; left by the Three Kings. Some towns like Juan Diaz will celebrate with Three Kings parades.

Hatillo Mask Festival
Music, food, parades and the trade mark masked vejigantes are the highlight of the Hatillo Mask Festival. The festival has been running annually since 1823 and commemorates the killing of the innocent children by King Herald. This years festival takes place on Dec 28.

San Sebastian Street Festival
The San Sebastian Street Festivals is one of the biggest and most popular festivals to take place in Puerto Rico. The area in and around San Sebastian Street comes alive with music, artisans, and food sellers. If you are afraid of crowds, you would do well to stay away, but if you like to party, then this is the place to be.

2012 San Sebastian Street Festival takes place Jan 12 – 15

New Years Eve in Puerto Rico
No matter where you are on the island you will have the opportunity to bring in the New Year; Puerto Rican style. Hotels and Resorts will host their own New Years Eve Parties, so check where you are staying for details.

Mainstream Events

Big Tree Trail in El Yunque was my very first experience of the rainforest over 10 years ago and it’s still one of my favorite (relatively easy) hikes in El Yunque. The added bonus, like La Mina Trail, Big Tree Trail takes you to the cascading waters of La Mina Falls; one of the most popular spots in the rainforest.

Big Tree Trail: Quick Facts

Trail starts at Km 10.4 on Road 191

Parking available

Trail is 0.8 miles long (one way) and should take on average about 45 minutes each way

Rated as a ‘Moderate’ hike

Trail starts at 1800 feet and ends at 1640 feet, which gives you a 160 ft drop in elevation, so it’s really not steep

Several interpretative signs (in Spanish and English) along the trail

A couple of small ‘rain’ shelters

Trail ends at the 35ft La Mina Falls

The Hike

So now you are ready to hit the trail. The trail has recently been repaved so you should find the surface relatively easy to walk on; just take care as even though the surface is grooved to help with traction it still can be a little slippery, especially after rain.

The gentle incline at the beginning takes you past several interpretative signs that explain about the ecosystem of El Yunque, explaining about the trees, plants, birds, lizards and other insects that make their home here. The information is really great and will help you understand how the forest developed and continues to thrive.

Along the way keep a look out for the local residents, it’s not guaranteed that you will actually see them, but you stand a great chance of hearing them.

El Yunque is also home to four species of fruit, insect and nectar eating bats as well as four species on non venomous snakes. Check the plant life for signs of life; those tiny holes, bumps and raw edges were made by something.

Listen and you might here one or more of the 20 species of birds that live in El Yunque and don’t forget the Coqui frog with its unmistakable Koo-kee call.

You will find some of the oldest trees in the forest along the Big Tree Trail, the Tabonuco trees have made their home here and some have been hanging around for some 200 years. You will also find the Magnolia Splendens that is unique to the Caribbean Rainforest.

Unfortunately El Yunque suffered some damage this year from the tropical storms and was hit hard when Hurricane Irene formed over the island. The Forest Services have done a great job in clearing the damage, but you will probably still see one or two downed trees.

As you continue along the trail, you will pass a couple of small shelters where you can take a break if you need to, or if you are unlucky enough to get caught in rain. The trail is not all downhill, as there is one short section that has about 70 steps that lead upwards, but unlike La Mina Trail, this section is relatively gentle.

As you start the final downhill section the sound of rushing water gets louder and louder until you reach the prize of the trail; La Mina Falls.

Here water pours over the 35ft falls into a small pool that is perfect for a swim (if you are feeling brave enough). Just make sure that you are already wearing your swimsuit (as there are no changing facilities) and that you are ready for the cooler (much cooler) water temperatures.

You can either access the falls using the steps just before the small bridge or cross the bridge and cross the rocks and boulders to the pool and falls. Whichever route you take, be careful as the rocks will be slippery.

Because La Mina Falls is extremely popular and the pool is not that large; if you REALLY want to enjoy the waterfall to its fullest, you need to get there EARLY.

Note there are no seats, so find a comfortable boulder and enjoy.

Once you are ready to leave the easiest option is to head back the way you came. You do have the option of taking the La Mina Trail, but the hike back to the Palo Colorado Information Center is steeper harder than the Big Tree Trail, plus, if you car is at the Big Tree Trail car park you (or someone) will need to walk back down about 1 mile along Rd 191 to retrieve your car.

Now if you still have energy, there are plenty of more trails in El Yunque to explore…

For those who are okay with being in close proximity to Pigeons then Parque de las Palomas makes for a great stop during your walking tour of Old San Juan.

The park is located next to Capilla del Cristo at the end of Cristo Street. It is only a small park but offers a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of Old San Juan and provides the pigeons of the area a great place to find shelter and food. As is typical in cities around the world, where there is a large gathering of birds, there will be someone selling bird food. For $1 you can continue this worldwide tradition.

The park is very picturesque with a couple of large trees whose trunks have twist and intertwine over the years to make really interesting trees. The back wall of the park provides special shelter to the pigeons by way of cut out holes all along the wall. I am not sure if these holes have been there since the park was opened, but the pigeons appreciate them.

There are several benches, where you can sit (at your own risk) and the park offers some great views of the San Juan Bay.
