What kind of creative work do you do?

I am an art director/designer for a living, often working on design storyboards and concepts for television and film, but work across a wide range of media and am constantly shooting photos and drawing (or doodling) in my sketchbooks.

How did living in Iowa impact you as a creative person?

It wasn't until I got a bit older and lived away that I realized how great my public education in Iowa was. I was able to experiment and try a wide range of creative things from elementary school on through high school. My elementary school art teacher bought a super 8mm camera and assigned us projects in which we learned aniamtion techniques and created our own animated films. In middle school through another art teacher, I had the opportunity to teach one day art/cartooning classes at elementary schools, and in high school, we not only had art classes that were great, but also commercial art and photography. I was also fortunate to have parents that signed me up for classes at the Davenport Museum of Art and took me to the public library on a regular basis . . . all of which had a huge influence on me, as did my older brothers and sister, who I remember all seemed to be above average at drawing.

How long have you lived "abroad" And where do you live?

I’ve lived in Seattle since 1994, so about 17 years, but I also ventured out to New York City for a brief period after graduating from Iowa State University, and also lived in Rock Island, IL for a couple of years in the early 90s.

How does where you live now foster your creativity?

Seattle has a large and wide ranging creative community, including multiple public radio stations, artist cooperatives, an active music scene, interesting food and small shops and galleries. Plus, I think the rainy winter weather here makes it easy to stay in, drink coffee and work on creative projects . . . and I currently work out of my house fulltime.

Are you working on anything right now that you are excited about? What is it?

Nothing currently, but I recently finished my third LP/CD package and screenprinted poster for Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter, an excellent Seattle band. I am also hoping to launch a photo blog featuring my own work some time in the new year and hope to produce some photo books, as well.

Campbell Steele Gallery, The Marion Arts Festival, and
Wiederspan Gallery all came into existence.

My community is incredibly lucky to have 3 fine quality galleries. Each of these venues works tirelessly to keep art out in the public eye in accessible, fun, ways. Campbell Steele has all their Friday night music events, artists, talks, and art openings, Corner House Gallery has fun openings and an Art-O-Mat, and Wiederspan Gallery host an annual birthday bash that can't be beat.

Hello Everyone,

As you can see, I have adopted the new "Dynamic" blog format. It can be a little tricky but...
I chose it becasue it has some cool features.

If you go to the left hand side there is a pull down button titled magazine. Go to that button right now and click on it.... You will see several different formats that enable you to view the blog in different ways. This is so wonderful because it adapts to how you read/ see things. For instance, I am fond of the flipcard format. It shows all the posts in image form. Since art is a visual medium, it is like a small art gallery. By hovering over each image, you can see who or what each image is about. By clicking on each image, you can bring up the contents of the post. Cool huh?

I'm made some changes to how I do things here at Discovering the World of Art. Instead of asking folks to participate, I'm leaving it open to you to submit. I don't judge or weed out submissions. If you go to the effort to submit, you will be featured. It is selfish on my part really. I just love reading about artists and why they do what they do. Other countries of note are Estonia, Russia, Thailand, and Brazil. Interesting huh?

There is something happening in Iowa and you may not even know it.

Pockets of small grassroots cultural events are occurring all over the state.

I've started to ask myself are we witnessing a "cultural revolution", an Iowa Renaissance?

Last night was one such moment. Campbell Steele Gallery in celebration of 20th anniversary of the Marion Arts Festival is hosting a series of conversations titled:

"Talk in the MUD".

To be honest. I wasn't sure what to expect. All I knew was...

as member of the greater Cedar Rapids/ Marion art community

It was important that I show up and bring friends.

One of the true luxuries of my life is being with people.

Especially people that I love or admire. Last night was all that and more.

The room was full of family, mentors, friends, artists, and former teachers.

I had the pleasure to witness Craig, Priscilla in their role as gallery owners and hosts.

The evening included good homemade soup, bread, cookies, and an artists' talk.

The most touching moment was how these women allowed themselves to be vulnerable,

1. How did you come to be an artist?

I was always doodling or drawing ever since I was a little kid. Coloring books were fun but even back then I preferred to "do my own thing" and freehand draw. In high school I spent a lot of time in art classes and had some great teachers. After school I set fine art aside to be a graphic designer because everyone told me that's the only way to make a living in the art world. Unfortunately I believed them and I did that for long time but never enjoyed it. To me it had nothing to do with art or freely being creative. So, starting in 2010 I decided to get back to what I love and make that my main focus. This year I have been very fortunate to get some national exposure and licensing contracts to let me be a full time professional artist, a dream come true!

2. What has been your biggest challenge?

My biggest challenge was to overcome my self doubt that I am good enough to pursue this path. I always enjoyed creating art for myself but I was not sure any one else really cared. I have had some great feedback and response by people that really made me see my art through another's eyes. That was, no pun intended, eye opening to me.

3. What would your "dream" exhibit space be or project be?

My dream exhibit would be someone's wall in their home. For someone to feel that my art is worthy enough to display in their own home is an honor in my opinion.

4. What inspires you?

Everything around me! People just need to open their eyes instead of being so focused on the little things and realize the world around them. You can get so much more out of an afternoon walk through a park or a nature trail than you can sitting in front of the TV or Facebook and getting caught up in people's drama. You can find beauty and inspiration in anything if you just take the time to look.

5. What do you like best about being an artist?

I like that it allows me to express myself and it becomes a creative release. If what I create makes someone else feel a certain way or it connects with them then there is nothing better!

It was a Simple Thank you....

It was just a simple envelope. A tiny collection of paper that arrived in my mailbox yesterday....but, the emotions and feelings that those 5 pieces of paper contained rocked me like nothing else had in a long time.

I admit it. I was feeling a little bit burnt out, sorry for myself, and even strung out.

This week's post is a follow up from the Postcard Project my students worked on during the Spring Semester.

As you read the letter and look at the photos, I'm sure you are wishing we could all read Japanese. That way we would understand the written contents.
As for the images. No more needs to be said. We can all draw our own conclusions, interpret, and understand.

1. How did you come to be an artist?
I brought a little note pad with me everywhere when I was younger - it kept me occupied for hours. In kindergarten I was asked "What do you want to be when you grow up?" and I confidently responded with artist because I liked drawing so much. Throughout grade school and high school, art seemed to be what I was good at, and that's why now I've decided that being an artist is what I was always meant to be.

2. What has been your biggest challenge?
I've never really thought of any art project to necessarily be a challenge because I'm always ready to jump into it and do it. But I would say that a huge challenge for me is trying to find a career in the art category. It seems any need for artistic abilities is fulfilled with a computer, which is not what I do.

3. What would your "dream" exhibit space be or project be?
Something I have been thinking I would love to do sometime is to create art for a book or CD cover; to see my creations in a store would be very satisfying. I'd also absolutely love to go to different countries and explore, study, and create art there because other cultures are so interesting.

4. What inspires you?
Anything can be inspiring to me. For example, the emotions put into a good song. The singer in a band really puts his heart into what he does. And the fact that he shares his personal experiences with others and how he overcomes trials is what inspires me. This is the same as my artwork. In most of the pieces I've done, they're so personal that it's almost like I've put a piece of my soul into each one. And in that way I hope to someday inspire others as well.

5. What do you like best about being an artist?
When drawing or painting something, I can create absolutely anything I want - it doesn't have to be real, it doesn't have to make sense. Art is also something that requires a viewer to think. By being an artist, I can make a connection with others just by my work because art always has a voice. That never ceases to amaze me.

6. If a person wants to see more of your work or purchase it...where can they go?
To be honest, the only place one can go to see more is my bedroom. They are all hidden away because I am a private person. As I said before, I've put my soul into my artwork, which has probably made me afraid to publicize it anywhere. That is why I chose to do this interview - it's time to take a step forward rather than standing still.

William J. Havlicek & Michael S. Ryan

ARTISTS

William Havlicek and Michael Ryan have been

friends for almost 40 years and are graduates of the

University of Iowa‘s acclaimed Graduate School of

Painting. While studying and painting together, a close

association grew out of their shared interests and

inspiration. This flourished into a lifelong admiration

and collaboration through their artistic borrowings

and influences. As each artist pursued their own personal

characteristics and leanings—one on the West Coast

and one in the Midwest—their immersion in nature

has yielded strong color affinities and painterly

parallels.

RATIONALE

It has often been demonstrated in the history of art

that common sources of inspiration have engendered

strong friendships among artists. However, little light

has been shed on the collaborative reality of artistic

life. Recently, several important museum exhibitions

have been devoted to illuminating this collaborative

phenomenon; for example, in the past decade, the

works of Braque and Picasso, Pissarro and Cezanne,

and Van Gogh and Gauguin have been shown sideby-

side. These shows demonstrate the importance

of artistic dialog. Simply put, Sojourn in Sunlight and

Shadow showcases such a phenomenon, resulting

in this unique selection of paintings.

1. How did you come to be an artist?

I have always been an artist- I did my first drawing on the back page of my Mother’s cookbook when I could hold a pencil. I did countless watercolors on shelf paper at the kitchen table. . My favorite Christmas present was a brand new box of 64 crayons. My grandmother paid me a penny for every picture I colored in a coloring book, so I colored every page in the entire book and she had to pay me a dollar, my first experience as an artist entrepreneur. My family was very artistic, but in more of a utilitarian way. My grandfather was a violin maker, and my father was an innovated woodworker When I was small I always had a different way of looking at things, and being able to capture that image on paper. I loved it as a kid because I received a lot of positive attention for this ability. I think every child needs that one skill that sets them apart from the herd. I drew portraits of all my friends, and then when I was in high school I drew a portrait of every teacher and lunch ladies’ children. They actually paid me- I think that is where I got my ability to draw people quickly then transferred that skill to being a sketch artist for Federal court and television.

2. What has been your biggest challenge?

For me right now, there really isn’t an artistic challenge, but there is a time management challenge and the challenge of marketing my art. I never realized when I wanted to become an artist that I would also have to become a business person, time management and social media marketer-plus a computer tech. I designed my website, which was a challenge, but I wanted to learn how to do it so I wouldn’t have to depend on someone else to modify it. It is also a challenge to not become a hermit, and just wall myself away and paint. I love being present for my family and friends, but my mind is always thinking of ideas and compositions to paint, and my eyes are always seeing forms, colors and motion to apply to those paintings.

3. What would your "dream" exhibit space be or project be?

I don’t think I have just one dream space. I would like my artwork viewed anywhere that is open and with good lighting. If I did have one wish it would be to have my work in galleries in Hawaii where I could frequent regularly.

4. What inspires you?

What truly inspires me is connecting with the people who view my art. When I sell a piece to a person who makes an emotional connection to my painting, well, it doesn’t get much better than that. That is the impetus that drives me to create more. I am also continually amazed by light and color, the different shades of light and shadow during the day on the same object. The ocean never ceases to amaze and inspire me. I could sit on the shore for the rest of my live and just watch the movement and gaze at its ever changing hues of blue and green.

5. What do you like best about being an artist?

The best part of being an artist is also the hardest part of being an artist. The challenge of creating all the paintings that dwell in my mind, and always just falling a bit short, but knowing the next one will be one step closer to my ideal. It is a job you can never retire from, or want to.

Iowa Art Oganizations: Art Guild of Burlington Iowa

Arts for Living Center in Burlington, Iowa was at a former German Methodist Episcopal church built in 1896. It featured exhibits, lecture programs, classes, and an art gallery dedicated to local artists.Photo courtesy the Arts for Living Center.

I've been thinking a lot about art history.

Not on the larger scale but, in a more personal way.

My art history and to be precise....

the people and organizations that have contributed to the artist I have become.

One of the first art organizations that I encountered was the "Arts for Living Center" in Burlington, Iowa. I remember quite vividly my first impression of the place. The building was a historic church. It was divided into two levels. The main floor was the location of the classroom, offices, and shop. The top floor, formally the nave of the church (the place where the people sit to worship) had been converted into the art gallery. Recently, I read that the word nave came from the Latin word "Navis" meaning ship, because the ceiling looked like and upside down hull of a ship. Thinking back on the space, the above description is perfect.

As a Middle School and High School student, I took an assortment of classes at this location. Ceramics was a personal favorite. Later while in college, I taught a metalworking class, and even had my first big "solo show".

The "Arts for Living Center" was this amazing place where I saw my first art exhibits, heard wonderful concerts, and even saw some films. They are know throughout SE Iowa for their "Snake Alley Art Festival".

Perched high on the hill, it took a commitment to get there. And even more physical stamina to access the gallery. The stairs were narrow and rickety. Not very handicap friendly. They did have a back entrance. Eventually, they terraced the hill and created a winding ramp through a sculpture garden so that folks in wheelchairs and not so able bodied could come in through the rear entrance.

The point of this historical wandering is that I have come full circle in another aspect my life. Dena Tollefson and I will be having a two person show at the Art Guild of Burlington's newish space.

About two years ago, they made the move from the older location to one downtown. Not only it is right in the historic Burlington downtown district, it is in the old Woolworth's building.

The new location is gorgeous. Once again it is divided into two spaces. One side is devoted to offices and classrooms. They have an amazing room devoted to ceramics and all things clay. The separate classroom space is airy and full of light. The ceilings go two stories up. The other side is devoted to the gallery. They have created many wonderful moveable walls so they can recreate the gallery space at will. There is a grand piano for events, and benches from the old location.

Right around the corner from the old Capitol Theater, this new space has the potential to be part of thriving cultural district.

From Springville to Japan. Kids to Kids....

On a previous post, I spoke about a project that I did with my students.

Part 1 and part 2 of the assignment were to create postcards to send to kids in Japan. During the class, we discussed was what kind of card would they like to get if they had been through a scary experience.
What would the cards look like if the children couldn't read English. How would we get our message across? What message would we send? What colors would be use? What shapes.

Here is what we came up with....The students wanted the cards to have the feelings of love, hope, and well wishes.

The age range of the kids is 8 years old to 10. They all live in Springville, Iowa and are part of the Eastern Iowa Arts Academy after school art program.

1. How did you come to be an artist?

I was raised in a home with two artists so art was everywhere in my childhood. I have always had a great appreciation for beautiful artwork but it wasn't until I was a parent myself that I began to explore my own creative side. When my children were small I began drawing and painting as a stress reliever and it has grown into a passion.

Maintaining the balancing act of being a mom to five kids, a help to my husband in our family small business, and find time to do the art that I love (and maybe some laundry every once in a while too!)

1. How did you come to be an artist?

I became a serious artist as an adult. My 'growing up' years were consumed with jobs, education and family. I was fortunate to know always I would do something in my life related to the liberal arts, whether it be musical, writing or in visual arts. I found that was a gift actually to pull in earlier life experiences to my work now as an artist. I've always done volunteer work of some sort with art, designing logos, doing commission work and creating for people, but I think in a playful way I recognized the title of 'artist' when someone asked me to a doodle a logo for a business card, where I had total control of the outcome, and they actually paid me. 2. What has been your biggest challenge?

Without a doubt it's time, or finding enough of it. Not sure why that now that our children are out of the house I seem to have less time. I have notebooks and journals full of drawings and renderings that I can't wait to take the inspiration from and make art! I find that my other job has it's plus and minuses too. The plus is I'm fortunate to work in a field that is all about the arts, so I'm constantly surrounded by creativity and can pull from that, endless possibilities. The downside, if it really is a downside, is that I find there is so much inspiration involved I can't possibly do all that I want from those moments.

3. What would your "dream" exhibit space be or project be?

My dream exhibit would be a space where my artwork is given a lot of negative space around it. Because I'm a large scale painter, many times my work is exhibited close to each other due to limited gallery space. When I paint I can see the space in my brain where I'd like it to be installed to have maximum impact. I did have an exhibit at Coe College a few years ago and it was very close to this dream when a large 60" square was on a wall in solitariness. Even though I lived with the painting in process, I was a bit overwhelmed to see it bathed with light, in a silent room, alone on it's own wall and talking back to me (in a weird kind of way) that I was correct in it's composition and size.

4. What inspires you?

Nature and it's unpredictably excite me. I love a great storm or a wind gust that makes trees sway and sing. I'm curious and unscrupulously attracted to weather and how it affects the world. Must have been growing up in rural Michigan where we had the full gambit of climate; tornadoes, blizzards, sultry summer, all of it. I am also inspired by the idea of color and it's combinations in nature; natural and unnatural, due to climate, to weather and to events such as floods, earthquakes and storms. Personal journeys of childhood with my family all tie together in ways that compel me to tell the story in paint. Making the hue/color work with the composition in a thoughtful way that translates into a feeling of what I want the viewer to see, or what I want to say is my goal.

5. What do you like best about being an artist?

I think by saying your an artist, opens up a lot of freedom in how people perceive you. I can be as free and expressive as I want with a minimum of raised eyebrows. I remember throwing on an old pair of jeans with holes in them and an odd sweatshirt for lack of nothing else clean to wear, and being greeted by an acquaintance of, "looks like you've been painting today", this was a free pass. I love that my quirkiness can be somewhat validated or forgiven by the claim of 'artist'. Being a creative thinker, bringing that and showing confidence to think independently is a by product of being an artist to me, I covet that ability to have learned and have the opportunity to pass it on in my work and in my life. I find that expressing my view through art is fulfilling. I'm still learning to take risks and I regard that as a gift.

Currently I have work at Campbell Steele Galleries in Marion, Iowa Artist Gallery and the Chait Gallery in Iowa City, the Quad Cities Art Center in Rock Island, Ill., and the Scene Gallery at the National Harbor, Maryland. If you around town, you will see my work in the Allaint Tower Mr.Beans lobby, Kirkwood, Coe College and with the CRMA permanent collections. Work that I'm especially proud of working on with students of the Eastern Iowa Arts Academy, (I am the current Art Director) are on exhibit at the Alliant Tower public space in Cedar Rapids.

Thomas Jackson: artist interview

How did you come to be an artist?

My older brother, Bob was always good at art. He was three grades ahead of me in school. When I was in grade school each new teacher who had also taught Bob would ask me: “Are you good at art like your brother?” My teachers would always ask me to participate in special art projects. Being good at art was something that was expected of me early on, and given opportunities, it ended up being something that I could do better than most or all of the other students in class. When it came time for college, it was natural for me to pursue art. I’ve been fortunate that this study has led to positions teaching art on the college level, as an illustrator, as a designer and creative director, and as a full-time artist. By the way, my brother Bob is a successful folk ceramicist.

What has been your biggest Challenge?

In 2006 I was offered a major solo show at the Figge Art Museum by Michelle Robinson, who was Curator of Collections and Exhibitions at that time. It was a “trust me” offer. Only about 30% of the work that I would need to fill the entire fourth floor gallery space existed when she made the offer. I had about a year to create the remaining 70% of the work and make sure that it was museum quality. It was a very rewarding experience working with Michelle from concept to completion of this work, and the resulting show in 2007 was very well received by the public and the press.
On an ongoing basis my biggest challenge is to focus my body of work. I have wide interests and work in painting, drawing, photography, and occasionally do a three dimensional piece. My natural inclination is to explore in many areas. I spend a lot of time thinking about how my work can be both diverse and yet cohesive.

What would your “dream” exhibit space be or project be?

I say dream BIG. If my dreams came true I would have a solo show at Gagosian Gallery in the Chelsea Gallery district of NYC.

What inspires you?

Life inspires me. My recent work is based on photographs taken as I travel across America and live in Iowa. I’m constantly excited by found objects, scenes, places, people, textures, etc. The trick is to be ready for life’s surprises.
Seeing great artwork from any time in the history of man inspires me. Lately I’ve been looking at Rembrandt and Goya etchings.

What do you like best about being an artist?

I like to hear people tell me how my art affects them. They tell me how it makes them feel, what it makes them think about, what they think my art is about. I like to make people think.

1. How did you come to be an artist?

Of course, like most artists, I was a creative kind of child. But officially “becoming” an artist for me probably happened once I changed my major in college to Studio Art. It was scary to make that transition, but it was also exciting, because it made it very real. I had made up my mind, I wasn’t going to be a teacher - I was going to be an artist.

I credit an amazing art professor at my alma mater for helping me to gain the confidence I needed to be an artist and also, even more importantly, to demonstrate what art could be about. I felt an entire host of possibilities were opened up to me, and I knew it was the path I had to take, despite some raised eyebrows.

2. What has been your biggest challenge?

In all honesty, one of the biggest challenges of being an artist can be maintaining a positive attitude in the face of rejection. There are lots of roadblocks that come in many forms. It’s just tough. Especially if you are on your own or right out of school, it can be difficult to believe the world needs your art. But it does! Having a strong support system and a stronger work ethic goes a long way. That is what I try to maintain. Every day, I focus on creating a positive attitude and avoid getting discouraged no matter what, celebrating every small step towards a goal as the accomplishment that it is. I owe a lot to my husband. His understanding, encouragement, and assistance with so many things help me more than I can express. I couldn’t be the artist I am today without him, that’s for sure!

3. What would your "dream" exhibit space be or project be?

My dream would be to have the studio, skill, and storage space to afford making large works. As long as I’m dreaming, I suppose I could toss in a venue to display them! It’s a simple dream, but seemingly hard to come by.

4. What inspires you?

My home. West Virginia is a beautiful state that lives up to its description as “Wild and Wonderful”. I have been a resident here all of my life. Both sides of my family are descended from recent immigrants who moved to Marion County mostly for job opportunities, but I like to think that there is something special about West Virginia that influenced them to settle here over any other place. Whether I am on location or in my studio, I am always thinking about how best to bring out the essential natural elements of the West Virginia landscape in my paintings.

Also, I would add that I am inspired by my materials themselves and the process of exploring what they can do. I love paint, especially gorgeous oil paint!

5. What do you like best about being an artist?

The journey. Mary mentioned this idea over at Adventures in Art. (link: http://mary-zeran.blogspot.com/2011/05/make-masterpiece.html ) Art is a journey and a process. It takes a lot of hard work and struggle to get to that great piece, to find that next plateau. I try to consistently raise the bar and push through to find the next level in my work. It’s an exhilarating struggle!

1. How did you come to be an artist?

When I started feeling and thinking in pictures, I was still a young kid. After school I became a scene painter and started drawing my first paintings. Quickly, clients asked for make-to-order pieces.

2. What has been your biggest challenge?

The process of reducing motives and replacing them with form and colour was a challenge hard to come by on my way to becoming a non-figurative artist.

My dream is seeing one of my paintings on display in the Tate Gallery! :-)

4. What inspires you?

A never ending stream of inspiration are real life images as well as paintings. Sometimes simple forms or colours can also be a great inspiration to me.

5. What do you like best about being an artist?

The ability to enjoy the possibilities you have worked for over a long period of time is one aspect I cherish about being an artist. The other fruit of my work I do hold dearly is the respect my clients show me!

Honorary Iowan: Leovi

1. How did you come to Be an artist?

I think it was by chance. As a child I wanted to be a footballer and collected the trading cards of players. I knew all their names and statistics.
After I had learned them all, I invented a new game. The game was to look at the border around the edge and try to guess the name of the player according to the tones of the sky in the photo. There were over 400 cards in my collection (at the time the photography was analog). I found that not even one of the skies was the same. I spent days trying to guess the names by just looking at a piece of heaven. I think subconsciously that learning how to see the difference in the color helped me a lot.

As a teenager I loved playing with a flashlight, projecting light onto the ceiling. I would cover the light beam partially with my fingers and create light, shadow and movement. At the same time I was listening to music and trying to create music-related images. With Sierra symphonic or progressive rock ie: Pink Floid, Yes, Camel, Genesis, ... the rate of movement and form was more leisurely. If I listened to hard rock ie: Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelind, Ramones ... The speed of the images increased.
With this experience, I created abstract images that were very suggestive. They woke up my imagination. Since I didn't know English, I created images and stories not related to the subject of songs. This didn't happen when I used Spanish songs. I felt closed and it did not work .

Later, I started adding layers of painting and drawing. I would gradually increase the intensity of an area (I was listening to the music of Alan Parsons, Mike Oldfield, Tangerine Dream .. ..) Listening to music helped me feel the change of color tones according to the intensity of light. For me this was just fun. But at one point I wanted to make representational work. I tried painting, but I wasn't trained in painting and it was a disaster.

Eventually after purchasing a SLR camera I discovered that my imagery was based on light and the only way of painting with light was through photography.

Simultaneously, I had a passion for the painting of Van Gogh and his freedom working with color. Thus, I began my adventure with art and the documentation of my early works in 1987.

My art studies are minimal. I haven't been in many competitions or contests, since the they ask for a curriculum vitae.

2. What Has Been Your Biggest Challenge?

The biggest challenge was in the beginning was technical. It took a while for me to find the right type of film and lighting for my needs. At the time we had only analog and my resources were very limited. I could not afford to have a laboratory, so I got used to creating the image before shooting. None of my pictures were retouched or manipulated after shooting. I learned to enjoy creating the scene before shooting, and I think that influenced my creativity and my photography. I have a way of working and an approach to the art sessions. Each time I take the camera is a challenge.

3. What Would your "dream" Be exhibit space or project be?

My dream is to have my style recognized when it is viewed by others. In the same way as , when you view a picture by Picasso, Monet, Van Gogh, or Matisse.... It is Leovi. It really is a difficult and ambitious dream. But just a dream ... I have and want a personal style.

4. What inspires you?

Light inspires me. The light in a restaurant, at a friends house walking in the street ... This makes it easy for me to make photographs. It is also easy for me to disconnect and go someplace else in my mind.

5. What do you like best about Being an artist?

The privilege of seeing and feeling things. Capturing a moment in time. I see more beauty than is represented. I think that happens to everyone. But capturing that moment is very exciting and unique. The inspiration comes first, and then the question of how to represent them, often I am not successful. Ultimately, I try to capture a moment in time.

6. If a Person Wants to see more of your work or purchase it ... Where Can They Go?

My work is currently not for sale. In the beginning, I visited many galleries, dealers, institutions and all doors were closed. At that time the internet wasn't at the level it is now. I found that to have exhibitions, I spent what little savings I didn't sell anything. In this phase of my life, I'm more relaxed in that regard. I have a job that allows me to support my family and the cost of digital photography is cheaper than analog. Now what interests me is to show my work. I have no dealer, nor intend to go looking for galleries that exploited me to pay their rent. If someone is interested in my work my email appears in my blog profile. But in principle I am more interested in showing my work than to generate money from it. It would be fantastic, If I could spend all my time making art. I think that would be the biggest advantage of making money.
