Fourth Pro Ultimate League Proposed

What a difference a year makes. In December 2011, the AUDL was gearing up for Ultimate's first season of pro competition. This week the founder of NexGen began floating a a pro league proposal just weeks after Major League Ultimate and USAU's Triple Crown pro initiative were each announced as happening in 2013. All four will be vying for the same pool of player talent from the elite clubs. It's going to be an interesting year.

Sarasota, FL - Austin's Doublewide club takes the Nationals title after putting the hurt on defending champs Revolver 15-11 in the final match! It's a first US championship for the Texas club, who had taken a beating from Revolver earlier in the tournament. It was Revolver's 4th consecutive trip to the finals. It was 'peats in the other divisions, with Fury ousting Riot for their 7th consecutive Women's championship, Blackbird again got past Polar Bears for a 2nd Mixed title, and Surly 3-peats in the Masters division. Allen Leads Team D Sweep to Become 2012 US Women's Champion

Huntsville, AL - It took not one but two 1000+ rated rounds for Catrina Allen to cement herself into history as the 2012 United States Women's Disc Golf Champion. The title came after a battle in the final holes with a surging Paige Pierce, who managed to take the lead during the final nine until Allen came back to force a tie at the end of regulation. The pair went into a playoff when Allen, who finished 5th at this event in 2011, popped off a deuce to seal the victory. Final results: 1st - Catrina Allen. 2nd - Paige Pierce. 3rd - Sarah Hokom. 4th - Elaine King.

Allen, Leiviska Sweep At Final National Tour Event of 2012

The PDGA National Tour was trimmed to six events this season, and the final stop was in Leicester MA, where Team Discraft closed out the primary season with a sweep by Cale Leiviska and Catrina Allen. The 1040-rated Leiviska, who finished 5th last month at Worlds, never shot a rating lower than 1042 through four rounds to become the 1st player to win this event twice after taking the trophy in 2007. For 2011 Pro Rookie of the Year Allen, it was the final confirmation of a solid pro season after wins at GBO, Beaver State and a 3rd place finish at Worlds.

Leiviska, Allen Sweep Oregon NT

Cale Leiviska of MN has earned a reputation as a long haul threat, with multiple top five Worlds finishes. Yet the 1038-rated pro had never won a PDGA National Tour event until this past weekend at the Beaver State Fling in OR. Up against a deep and talented field, Leiviska was forced to step up with back to back 1070+ rated final rounds to avoid a playoff and win by one throw. Catrina Allen of Phoenix hit the pro circuit hard last season, earning a nod as the PDGA Female Pro Rookie of the Year. She also earned her first NT trophy in OR, out-shooting reigning World Champ Paige Pierce with an impressive 1003-rated round two to coast to a three-shot win.

Catrina Allen is PDGA Pro Rookie of the Year

Congratulations to Team D's Catrina Allen of Phoenix, who has been honored as the 2011 PDGA female Pro Rookie of the Year. Allen played in a total of 38 events on the 2011 PDGA Tour and she placed in the top six of all three PDGA Majors she entered, top 4 at five NTs, and won 8 SuperTour events. The stats from Catrina's impressive rookie year were so good that she almost made it onto the finalist list for the Player of the Year award.

Jim Kenner and the Discraft UltraStar inducted into Ultimate Hall of Fame

Discraft founder Jim Kenner and his most enduring creation -- the UltraStar 175 ultimate disc -- have been inducted into the Ultimate Hall of Fame. The disc was introduced in 1981, just three years after Discraft had been established. UltraStar quickly gained a reputation as a superior sportdisc, and became the exclusive disc for USA Ultimate Championship play in 1991, a position it continues to hold to this day.

Jim Kenner went on to create dozens of successful sportdiscs, but UltraStar remains most beloved by millions of players worldwide. "It has been my privilege to be part of the Ultimate community for over thirty years now, and to have made a significant contribution to the game and its players. I would like to thank the players for this honor, and more importantly for the friendship and inspiration you've so generously given me over the years."

With the induction, Kenner also joins Dan "Stork" Roddick to become only the second individual to be inducted into both the Ultimate and Disc Golf Halls of Fame. He continues to serve as Discraft president at the company's headquarters in Wixom, Michigan.

Ace Race Proto Approved, Renamed Zeppelin

USA Ultimate membership rises 11%, reaches all-time high

Membership in USA Ultimate jumped nearly 11% in 2010 and reached an all-time high, the National Governing Body for the sport of Ultimate announced. As the calendar year 2010 nears an end, total membership in USA Ultimate stands at 34,947 current members – a 10.6% increase compared to a year ago when the organization totaled 31,588 members. Several segments of USA Ultimate’s membership rose even more sharply, including Youth, College and Coach categories.

It wasn't a new record, but Dion Arlyn came up with a big pull when it counted at the Big D in the Desert distance championships. His final round throw of 223 meters (731 ft) with a Z NUKE driver took the distance title. Big Jerm Koling popped out a monster shot of 236 meters (774 ft) earlier in the competition, which appears to be the longest official Discraft distance throw. Robbie Bratten was also on hand to blast one for 225 meters (738 ft).

Koling is PDGA Rookie of the Year

Jeremy 'Big Jerm' Koling of Charlotte NC was honored this week by the PDGA as the 2009 Pro Rookie of the Year. His outstanding season in 09 included seven wins and an impressive 23rd place finish at USDGC. Koling has a player rating of 1010, and plans on touring full time during the upcoming season.

Frisbee creator Fred Morrison dies

Monroe, UT - The inventor of the original Frisbee flying disc has died in his Utah home. Fred Morrison was 90. A bomber pilot in World War II, Morrison created the "Pluto Platter" in 1955 to take advantage of the UFO craze in the 1950s. In 1957, Wham-O, a hunting-goods company looking to expand into sporting-goods, picked up Morrison's invention and in 1959 registered the name Frisbee. The toy gave rise to today's popular disc sports, and has brought fun and joy to millions.

Current UPA Membership Tops 30,000

BOULDER, Colo. – The Ultimate Players Association announced that its official membership total in 2009 exceeded 30,000 for the first time in its history. The final number reached 31,588 individual members, representing an eight percent increase over the 2008 season (29,311). The UPA membership total has grown more than 81% in just six years, rising from 17,419 in 2003.

4.9 Million Ultimate Players Can't Be Wrong

The Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association reports Ultimate is on the rise despite an overall sporting industry decrease of 3.2 percent. In 2006, there were 3.9 million people playing Ultimate. 2007: 4 million. 2008: 4.9 million. The SGMA says that 18 percent of Ultimate players played the game at least 25 times in 2008.
