Semi-local spots for camping

Hey friends! I'm gathering a list of places to camp that aren't too far away, accept last minute reservations, and are fairly priced. I'd love your input! Thanks to those of you on our Facebook fan page, here's what I have so far:

Debbie Hughes: There is a great APP called ALLSTAYS - we use all the time. I think you can find it on the computer as well. Shows campgrounds and lots of other info.

Jennifer Paige Hundley: The KOA in Petaluma. Awesome pool and you're not spending oodles on gas.

Caitlin Wall: We are trying out gualala regional park in a few weeks! First trip with the little one!

Nicole Brewer Gross: Hendy Woods

Fun activities for summertime

Summer is just around the corner, and the vast majority of us will have kids moping around the house after the novelty of summer vacation has worn off, bored with nothing to do.

Let's help each other out!

Share your ideas for fun, cheap summer activities that you can do with your kids (or that they can even do on their own!)

I'll start:

- Plant their own garden

- Make homemade playdough

- Go on a scavenger hunt

- Learn to bake

- Fingerpaint

- Camp in the backyard

- Create and perform a play or musical

Principal gets OK to paddle bad kids

Paddling, a discipline practice that was once common in the school days of our parents, has re-entered the school system with a swift swat.

In Florida, the Marion County School Board voted to add this disciplinary action back into the school system, allowing the principal the right to paddle a misbehaving child. The corporal punishment is only accepted at the elementary school level, can only be used on a child one per semester, the parent or guardian must have given written permission, and the principal must obtain verbal permission at the time the punishment is to be given (though I can't see any child saying it is okay to paddle their behind voluntarily).

To me, this whole story is shocking. But the most shocking part is that this is being allowed in a time when teachers are forced to refrain from hugging their child or showing any form of physical affection lest it be construed as inappropriate. But this school board believes it's okay to PADDLE a child's behind?

What do you think? Would you ever allow your child to be paddled by their principal if they were misbehaving?

A recent assembly at Kenilworth about proper dress attire at school left a bad taste in the mouths of many. As the weather grows warmer and the layers begin to disappear, of concern was the way the female population at the school was dressing - particularly among the female population of the school.

But what started out as a talk on dress code soon felt more like an attack on the girls of the school - especially since the girls were the ones pulled aside for this assembly, and one of the reasons given for not dressing inappropriately was because of "boys' raging hormones".

“Some of our female students have been wearing leggings that are too shear and we’re seeing their underwear,” said Dunnagan. “We have the same rule for boys and girls — no underwear is allowed to show. Because it was a problem we were having with our female students, and because we wanted them to feel comfortable, we took the time to speak to them privately about it.”

However, Dunnagan lamented that the main focus of the discussion was lost due to how it was handled.

The school discussed a concern over skinny jeans, yoga pants, and leggings. And while they are not banning these articles of clothing, they are requiring that girls "wear a dress, skirt, shorts or a long shirt over the top of the leggings." Already, the school has banned tank tops with skinny straps and skirts or shorts that are shorter than the tips of the fingers when arms are straight at the sides.

My Baby News closing

Some sad news just came my way. My Baby News, the baby products retailer in Santa Rosa, is closing their doors.

Starting on Wednesday, the baby store began their huge closeout sale, offering all their items at liquidation prices. They assure the public that they are still honoring registries while they're still open (and at better prices than ever!), and will fulfill all special orders, credits, registry rewards, and gift cards. However, they are no longer able to accept any returns or exchanges. All held merchandise must be picked up within two weeks of it will be forfeited. Also, purchases can only be made in store, and not through their website.

We are looking in Santa Rosa between downtown & spring lake area.

Has anyone heard anything about / know anything about kiwi preschool behind Mary's Pizza
Shack on Summerfield?

Any other recommendations in that area?

Cold Lunch Ideas - Care to share?

I love any nut butter (or seed butter) with pieces of dates and a sprinkle of ground flax seed, also with bananas and a smear of raw honey with hemp seeds. I put it on a healthy sprouted bread. Never does a bite come home.

I also added a new sandwich to the lunch ideas. Tortilla, spread of nut butter and sliced apples.

I am always looking to share with moms. Any ideas?

Stolen car with baby inside a lesson for all parents

A mother has been thankfully reunited with her baby in San Jose when her baby went missing earlier today. Early this morning, she had placed the infant in her carseat and then went back in the house for just a moment. It only took a few moments, from the mother walking in and then walking out of her house, for the car with her baby inside to be taken.

The ending to this story is a happy one, thank goodness! The Jeep Liberty was located in a neighborhood across town by a neighbor who heard the baby crying inside. She was checked out by the hospital and was determined to be in good health before being reunited with her mother.

Everything turned out ok, but this story serves as a loud reminder to all parents to never leave their child in the car unattended - even for a few seconds. It can be tempting, especially when your in a rush and don't seem to have enough hands, or the baby is peacefully napping in their carseat and you only mean to leave them for a minute or two. But as the story showed, it can only take a minute or two for something horrible to happen.
