Westnile Virus Still Spreading

In recent months we have had more and more reports of West Nile Virus. As of today there have been a total of 733 cases of West Nile reported in the United State. West Nile originated in the district of Uganda in 1937 when a woman contracted the virus. It spread to North America in 1999. West Nile can be found in birds, humans and mosquitoes and blood donation.

As of August 2012 there have been 1,590 reported cases of West Nile to the CDC with 70% of the cases reported from Texas, South Dakota, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Michigan.

West Nile has peaked again since 2004. West Nile can be found in 42 states with Texas bearing the brunt with 14 deaths, followed by Mississippi and Oklahoma. Reports state since 1999 - 30,000 people have become infected with this virus. West Nile can cause life altering neurological disorders.

The neurological disorders include

Encephalitis - inflammation of the brain
Meningitis - inflammation of the membrane around the brain and spinal cord
Acute flaccid paralysis - inflammation of the spinal cord that can cause a sudden onset weakness in the limbs and/or breathing.

West Nile is also considered to be a seasonal epidemic that flares in the summer and ends in the fall. Mosquitoes are more active at dusk and dawn. Precautions are as follows:

Take precautions by wearing long sleeve shirts and pants.
Remove any stagnant water - standing water in pots, barrels, or buckets.
Change the water for your pets frequently.
Use mosquito repellant.
Change the water in bird baths weekly.
Drill holes in tire swings so water doesn't accumulate.
Keep wading pools empty and on their sides when not being used.

Serious Symptoms to look out for include

High fever
Headache
Stiff neck
Stupor
Disorientation
Coma
Tremors
Convulsions
Muscle weakness
Vision loss
Numbness
Paralysis.

The symptoms last several weeks and the neurological effects can be permanent. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms or know someone that is seek medical attention immediately.

High risk include

People over 50
Being outside
Picking up dead birds (report it - don't touch it!)

Other Lower risk include according to the CDC include

Blood transfusion
Organ transplants
Breastfeeding
Mother to baby during pregnancy

Note: Pregnancy and nursing DO NOT increase risk of becoming infect with West Nile Virus. The risk that West Nile may effect the fetus or an infant through breast milk is still being investigated.

Milder cases of West Nile

Fever
Headache
Body aches
Nausea
Vomiting
Swollen lymph glands
skin rash on chest, stomach or back

These symptoms last from a few days to several weeks. Most people don't have any symptoms and 4 out of 5 people infected with West Nile Virus will not show any symptoms. The symptoms develop within 3 to 4 days after being bitten by the infected mosquito.

In the milder cases, West Nile improves on its own. People don't always need to seek medical attention for the infection, unless they develop severe symptoms such as listed above. History of HIV

HIV has grown by vast numbers since it was first detected in 1981. This disease effected mainly homosexual men out of Los Angeles and New York. These men were diagnosed with an uncommon disease called Pneumocystis Carinii known as, Pnemocystis Jiroveci. Pneumonia (PCP). They also developed rate skin tumors called Kapois's Sarcomas. The patients had a significant decrease of a cell called CD4, which is an important part of the immune systems that helps fight infection.

In 1983 the virus was described as the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that causes AIDS. This virus belongs to a group called Retro Viruses.

TESTING

Since then, there have been blood test available that measure antibodies to HIV that are the body's immune response to the HIV. This is still the best method of diagnosing HIV. The secondary test is with saliva and blood with results in 20 minutes.

Early detection is vital to your health and finances. The following is a quote from Dr. Slavenks,. " Anyone who's got HIV that we diagnose early enough -it may save anywhere between half a million and a millions dollars over the course of a lifetime."

There are many clinics in every state that do anonymous HIV Testing. Usually if you go to a clinic there is little to no fees for the test. And if there is a fee. It's minimal at best. If you are sexually active and have had more then 5 five partners. You should be tested at least once every 3 to 6 months, depending your partnerships/relationships.

HIV Transmittal

As of 2010, there are few people who don't know how HIV is transmitted. The following is for those that seek knowledge in this area. Here is a short review from:

HIV is present to variable degrees in the blood and genital secretions of virtually all individuals infected with HIV, regardless of whether or not they have symptoms
The spread of HIV can occur when these secretions come in contact with tissues such as those lining the vagina, anal area, mouth, or eyes (the mucus membranes), or with a break in the skin, such as from a cut or puncture by a needle.
The most common ways in which HIV is spreading throughout the world include sexual contact, sharing needles, and by transmission from infected mothers to their unborn children.
Fact: HIV infection can occur after even one sexual event.

Studies prove that within six weeks of exposure, the majority of infected people have positive results. Then after six months all of the infected patients will be positive for HIV. During this time some of the infected will exhibit "flu-like" or infectious mono-like " Illness for up to several weeks. This is the Primary Stage of Infection.

3. Soar throat, and swollen glands in the neck

There are patients that will be Asymptomatic - (without symptoms) after the primary infection stage. The progression time is between eight and 10 years.

HIV is preventable

Don't ever share needles and always use protection during sex.

In 2010 HIV was still rising, with the highest rates of infection coming out of New York , DC, and the South. Mainly the Groups are Woman who are minorities and young teenagers and young adults ranging between 13 and 65 years old.

In HIV is still highest among African Americans, although there has been a slight decline. HIV is spreading rapidly among some major cities such as

Another group highest hit are young people under 25 years of age. There are approximately 7,400 people who become infected daily with 3, 300 who are young.

In closing we cannot forget that HIV is still very present in our society. We must practice safe sex when ever possible. Take all necessary precautions as well as HIV drug testing every 3 to 6 months if your sexually active. Check with our local clinic for anonymous testing in your area.

This world has changed in so many ways since I was 18 years old. I was at the beginning of learning how to use a computer. People were more sociable and interacted with with one another. Today we have automated cars, phones, computers and buy food by scanning the items ourselves. We have become an automated world. We also have the RFID Tags to keep track of our pets. And GPS applications if we get lost or lose a loved one in phones and car systems.

This world has changed a great deal; however I feel that we need to return to some basic rules. The first rule is love thy neighbor; meaning that we should help one another. Times are hard and people are really struggling. They are losing their jobs, homes, lifestyles, and families are being torn apart. I'm sure that there are more arguments over money in families then ever before.

The children are working to help their parents because we can no longer survive on one income, two incomes and some cases three. Those days are gone. So I say, we should pull together in one accord and help our communities. If our neighbor is struggling and you've noticed changes in the home environment, but you just don't know how to approach them. I suggest leaving a bag a food at their door step, books or clothes.

We have to give to those in need. Don't always expect to get something in return. Everyone is struggling right now. Perhaps they want to give back to society, their church, family member, pay their bills on time, but can't. Maybe you can offer a ride to work or the store to people you know that are struggling.

Everyone needs a hand up. This is my way of giving people a hand up. Lets quit being so judgmental of others, but rather choose to see the good in everyone. It's not our place to judge people. It's human to be judgmental, but remember we will be judged just harshly as we judge others. I don't mean by God alone, but by society. Because someone is different from you, doesn't mean that they don't have morals, a believe system, or even faith in higher being. Let's leave that to the man upstairs.

And one more thing,while your driving around town, don't judge the people who are begging for money. We haven't walked a mile in their shoes. We don't know or understand their inner suffering. If you don't want to give them money. Buy them food if you can afford it. Or pack an extra meal and pass it on to the the person in need on your way to work. If you can afford it. You can also buy the trial size toothpaste, toothbrush, dental floss, and a small bar of soap. Prepare small baggies. Remember that not everyone is approachable. But try to do good while your still on this earth and make your mark on their hearts of the people you touch and not necessarily the world.

I know that some people are disappointed in some religious groups. False leaders and poor leaders have been around for centuries. That will never change. You have to test their teachings. Remember they are human beings not higher beings. They have flaws. Read and incline to your own understanding. If your curious about a group see what kind of people they produce. They won't be judgmental, hateful, bitter and cruel. If they are? Your in the wrong place...

Realize that family is very important and staying together during these hard economic times is vital to you and your families survival. Help your kids out, help your mother and father. If your brother needs help; give it to him. Don't ask for anything in return and don't expect anything in return.

Parents drive your kids to school or help them in small ways. Give them portions of food and cleaning products if they are living alone an an apartment. If they are struggling allow them to come home, but work together to reach an agreement. Such as: You can move in and we can help each other out. And we will agree to disagree on some points of view. Then allow that family member space to think about it.

Whatever happened to back yard bar b ques? How do you know that your neighbor is hungry and perhaps they don't have the money to feed their kids. Invite them over. I truly believe that if we make changes in our behavior towards others. People will change their point of view or perspective. I know this from experience. Just when thought that everyone in the world was bitter, hateful, self-fish, cruel and lost hope. I found a group of people who taught me to be a better person, stronger individual and even helped me without asked for anything in return.

In closing we must respect one another. We don't have to agree on everything. But we should come together in one accord. That's what our nation was founded on. Freedom... Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves, our soldiers give their lives every day without asking for anything return except a thank you. Their memorials or not the place to fight political wars. It is because if them that the people that choose to do so can. It's is because if them (our soldiers) that we have the freedom of speech. But don't abuse that privilege.

Whether you believe in Karma, pay it forward, Jesus, Jehovah or humanity; this is the time to act! Now is the time to help one another. We have to become united again. Remember One NATION under God.

Lets quit road rage, fear of teaching a new person a job, because your afraid of losing your own. That doesn't make you a leader. It's actually a cowards way of getting through life. We have to have accountability for actions and follow through with great examples. Lead...

I know there are many people that at some point either thought about suicide or actually tried to commit suicide. For those people that are hanging on by a thread I have a special message:

Sometimes it seems that wicked people seem to get their way. They live in nice homes, drive nice cars and don't seem to have a care in the world. 'While good people suffer, illness, pain and poverty.

I am offering you a ray of hope and a promise from God. He will not forget the wicked. No one leaves this earth without paying for their sins. They will be remembered.

So hold on to that Shield and Buckler that God has provided. It will not let you down and you will rise above all these things and the people that seem to torment you.

In the end you will get all the Glory..... Believe me. Don't give up and don't left them win. God has a promise. When people leave you, its because he is opening doors so the right person can come in. When people betray and hurt you. Bless them and go your way. Place them in God hands. He says vengeance is mine! He says if anyone dare hurt my little ones (righteous ones) it would be better then them to take a stone and wrap it around their neck, because they will not be forgiven. An American Topic

This topic is very important to me and very close to my heart. I feel that our world has become of world of neurotic people. People who fear the unknown or others that are different. Case in point, the building of a mosque close to the 911 Twin Towers site.

We have two opposing views on this topic. One minister wants to burn the Quran while another wants to welcome Muslims in his community.

CNN's Fred Pleitgen reports that if a Florida church burns a Quran, then it could possibly spark unrest in Pakistan.

My cousin fights for this country. I don't want him in harms way because of the foolishness of one man. This act only brings about more hatred from that side of the world and maybe from some of our American Muslims. This world is full of people who place their confidence in guided missiles, fighter planes, bombs, automatic rifles, knives and spears.

Jesus said: "All who take the sword will perish by the sword." (Matthew 26:52). In Revelation we read: "He who kills with the sword must be killed with the sword" (Revelation 13:9). Physical violence is reciprocating and self-perpetuating. You cannot solve your problems with a weapon.

(These are words we should live by) We have gangs in our country that are killing one another and many innocent individuals. There is enough bitterness and hatred. We need change! We need world change!

This act of peace is more American and more Christian then any other I have seen or read.

There has been so much controversy over this topic. As far as I am concerned. I don't see color. I respect freedom of speech and freedom of religion. Whom you choose to worship or how is up to the individual. I don't believe that we have the right to judge others based on the color of their skin or race or religion.

The day that the Twin Towers were destroyed was a bitter and horrible day for all humanity. It was a crime against everyone who died and the families that were left behind. Many have forgotten that on that day, there were many people of many different races and nationalities in those buildings. There were people of many faiths including Muslims that died that day. Children of many faiths died that day.

However, there were also heroes of many faiths including Muslims saving lives. There are radical groups in all religions! Why condemn the good people and place them next to the terrorist. This is not just. It is not American! We are wrong in judging and condemning all Muslims for the beliefs of a few radical groups. MOST of which do not even live in this country. That is why we have HOMELAND SECURITY! The American Muslims have stated many times, that they condemn any kind of hatred and terrorism.

Yet many of those people claiming to be Christians are doing the labeling and condemning. We even have soldiers of many faiths including Muslims, Christians, and Satan Worshipers in our military. Read the Declaration of Independence again and again until you understand what our country was founded on. Liberty and Justice for ALL. IN GOD WE TRUST

Child Abuse - The Death of Andrew Burd

Andrew Burd was a small four year old infant who was living with fostering parents Hanna and Larry Overton. This child was placed in their home to be cared for and nurtured. Unfortunately he lived his short little life at the hands of two very abusive people. He died on October 3, 2007 at Driscoll Childrens Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas of sodium poisoning; otherwise known as Hypernatremia. His foster parents were charged with capital murder.

Hannah Overtons' attorneys alleged that Andrew was not abused, but died of Diabetes Insipidus. This disease can cause a person to have nausea, vomiting, intense thirst, lethargy, excessive irritability, muscle twitching, coma and finally death. Which remarkably were some of the symptoms Andrew exhibited before his his death.

In the days before Andrews' death, his foster mother Hanna Overton, told a neighbor that Andrew was intentionally misbehaving. She stated that Andrew made himself throw up and poop. She alleged that he defecated at least eight times and smeared the feces everywhere. Most people know that extremely spicy foods can cause diarrhea. Hannah was quoted, "He's doing it to get to me." No human being on earth can force himself to defecate eight times.

There are many indications that prove that Andrew was suffering from Hypernatremia otherwise known as sodium poisoning. Hanna poured Zazarans spice into Andrews' sipi cup as a form of punishment. The spice brought on the diarrhea and vomiting. Hanna admitted that she often used chili or Zazaran Canjun spice as a form of punishment.

On the the day Andrew fell ill, Hannah was quoted as stating, she fixed two sippy cups with chili and water. Then forced little Andrew to drink it. The first cup was to teach him a lesson. The second cup a form of punishment. Then he fell over, hit his head and threw up. She picked him up then stated, "Beat the s*** out of him," in an affidavit.

This illness was not brought on by Diabetes insipidus. According to the Merk McNeal fiffteenth edition, Diabetes insipidus can be caused by severe head injury after a patient has already been in a state of coma or death. It was also alleged that a previous car accident in which Andrew hit his head in the weeks prior brought on the disease. Andrew was not in a coma at the time of the accident nor was he near death.

This is a clear case of abuse. Andrew endured the worse kind of neglect and abuse imaginable by the people who were supposed to care for him. He was under constant video surveillance by his foster mother, Hannah Overton. She often sent him to bed without eating for two days in a row. She used the camera to assure that he did not get up to go to the restroom.

Then little Andrew defecated on himself and all over the bed. Afterwards the sheets were removed and burned. And the mattress was found under the swing set. Andrew was forced to sleep on a piece of plywood. Even the Overtons' own children, who are ages seven and five were not immune to the abuse. They were also punished in the same manner with pepper or soap which was placed their mouths if they were every untruthful or misbehaved.

Andrews little body was observed by the physicians at Driscoll Childrens Hosptial. it was discovered that he had a cigarette burn on his right arm and bruising to his arms and legs. He also had scratches along his stomach, neck and head trauma. There was also bleeding on Andrews brain. The facts indicate he was clearly an abused child.

Further, The Annals of Internal Medicine state that Hypernatremia is usually found in elderly patients who may have been inadvertently prescribed an overdose of fluids via IV in a hospital or nursing home. The American Journal of Forensic Medicine, states that infants who die from Hypernatremia have an underlying condition or disease that predisposes them to an increased water loss. If no underlying cause such as a disease is indicated, then the only other cause is parental or caretaker neglect as the underlying cause of death.

The news reported that Attorneys speaking on behalf of the Overtons are trying to seek a new hearing. The attorneys submit that there were other witnesses that were not allowed to testify. And also want to submit more important information that could aid their client, Mrs. Hanna Overton. This case, in my opinion was tried fairly and justice prevailed.

On March 25th, 2010 an article posted in the Corpus Christi Caller Times indicated that the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals refused to hear an appeal from Mrs. Overton. It appears Mrs. Overton will continue to serve a life sentence. And her husband Larry Overton, plead guilty to a lesser charge of Criminally neglect homicide. He was sentenced to five years deferred adjudication probation and a $5000.00 fine.

Little Andrew Burd is the real victim. he will never see another birthday, go to high school, marry and have children or life at all. Someone decided his fate for him. Perhaps there is some form of mental illness in Mrs. Overton. There are psychologist and psychiatrist at the state penitentiary who can assess this. In any case, the state penitentiary is a good place for Hannah Overton. It's far enough away from her natural born children. Her own children will be safe with someone who will protect them. Hopefully they will be placed in the care of someone who is more compassionate; for away from their mothers twisted idea of punishment.

Meaningless Traditions - Racism a disease of the world

There are people in our society who have been racist from generation to generation. The extent of the cruelty to others is unbelievable and unfounded. Many people of different races and cultures have become victims of such cruelty. Racism is not just about whites against blacks or black against whites. Racism is everywhere around the world. It's hard to believe it still exist, even though we are so well educated through school, media, books and even church.

I read a story written by Shirley Jackson called, "The Lottery". This story was about a lottery that was preformed once a year, every year, for generations. The people cast a lottery to wee who would be stoned to death. It didn't matter if it was right or wrong and that it didn't make sense. It was part of the social system.

I read a story about such a meaningless tradition. It was a factual story about a man named James Byrd Jr., he was a 49 year old father of three and grandfather who died a horrible death at the hands of three men in Jasper Texas in June of 1988.

The men that committed the crime were said to have been part of a white supremacist group. These men showed no remorse and performed an age old ritual. They placed a rope around Mr. Byrd s head, and dragged him for miles on the rural roads outside of Jasper Texas. Mr. Byrd fought a good fight for his life; using his upper body and elbows to keep his head from slamming to the ground. He lost his battle on that dirt road, when he was decapitated.

This crime is not the first of its kind. There are many crimes against humanity committed by person who are just following age old traditions. It is said that racism is not something you are born with. It is something we are taught as children or even as young adults. Sometimes we just want to belong to a group and be accepted, even though it may go against every belief system that we posses.

We have many groups such as the: Ku Klux Klan, Black Panthers, Banditos, Chinese Mafia, Gangs and many more. Statistics indicate that most people who join such organizations are uneducated, unemployed, poor, and high school drop outs. It's no excuse for these horrible crimes

But then again there are people who are educated and have such belief systems. These systems rarely work out. People are tired of the hate crimes and crimes in general. Mothers and fathers are tired of burying their children. Children wish they could have their parents back.

It is without a doubt traditions that needs to be eradicated. We need to grow as human beings and move onto a better way of living. We need to learn from one another, grow and change. We can continue to cast the stone and bury our dead or we can change our way of thinking. Cast the stone? That is a good question.

Abuse of Power A Disease Of The World

There are many forms of power that can manipulate and cause people to conform to the will of another. There are powers of Government, police, legal systems and power through abuse, be it mental or physical. The one thing that always seems to puzzle me is how some people knowingly follow a corrupt society, person or group as if they had no mind of their own.

One example was a reverend by the name of Jim Jones, a 47 year old Christian Cult Leader who in 1978 convinced over 914 people to commit mass suicide. Not all of the 914 cult members went to their death freely. There were 638 adults and 276 children. Some of the cult members were shot as they ran from the camp. Other cult members were injected with cyanide; while others were forced to drink Kool-Aid laced with cyanide and sedatives. It is sad to know that so many people could be manipulated by ONE man.

Jim Jones was a man who abused prescription drugs and was extremely paranoid. He treated his members as though they were in a concentration camp. He was the typical abuser. He took everything from these people and like most cowards he took his cult members with him to the grave.

Then there is power to instill fear and indecision in human beings by another. This is the power of abuse. There are many victims in our society and many of them are woman, children, and even men. Some are fortunate enough to get counseling to gather the strength to leave the abuser. While others are not so lucky. The unlucky souls almost always end up abused physically to the point of death. Those that suffer emotional abuse and survive on occasion take their own lives due to the extensive nature of the abuse. It is fear that keeps the abused person in an abusive relationship. Even though they want to leave with every part of their being they cant.

To continue, there is also abuse in power within Governments; such as in the case of Saddam Hussein the former President of Iraq. He was tried and convicted for committing crimes against humanity. He committed on of the most horrific crimes against humanity, "genocide." He ordered the murder of over 400,000 people. His victims were shot and placed in 270 mass graves. Many of the victims' bones were wrapped in white bundles. Some of the skulls still had the blind fold over their eyes. Saddam's regime denied allegations by the United States of mass murder for years.

Then on November 20, 2003 British Prime Minister Tony Blair announced that the mass graves containing the bodies of 400,000 Kurds, Shiites, Sunnis, Egyptians, Kuwaitis, and Iranians had been discovered. Each group murdered for different reason like ethnicity, religion, and political views. The victims' freedom to live and breath was taken away from them with one order. Many of the victims were entire families of which included men, women and children. The victims were his people. These were people he was supposed to protect. Saddam abused his power over his people. Saddam was convicted and on December 30, 2006 he was executed by hanging.

Then there is Social Abuse. Social abuse is defined as, " The coercion of an individual in a public setting or by a collective group of people toward an individual. The power to a group to embarrass and intimidate." There are so many examples of this type of abuse. There are people even in a workplace that thrive and enjoy humiliating another person or persons. These people consistently demean and publicly put people down. Most of the time it is because these people have a low sense of worth and self esteem and feel that they can redeem themselves at the expense of another human being.

The effects in the work place however are subtle and can be viewed as the norm for all the people involved. Some co-workers may view it as, "That person is new and everyone is treated that way in the beginning." The victim is expected to shrug it off and go about their day as if nothing was wrong. The unknown fact that cannot be immediately detected is that the abuser in this case will yell, spread rumors about the victim and may even blog about them on the internet. The victims' psychological effect is that they will call in more just so they don't have to endure anymore abuse. The victim will use up their vacation days and sick days because they are no longer accepted by their peers. The victims' freedom to have peace of mind in the work place and a sense of belonging has been eradicated, while the abuser feels triumphant.

Finally, people such as these only have the power we give them. There is always a solution. We just have to look harder for it. In the case of Jim Jones, someone in his cult knew there was a problem but either did not act or was not heard. Abused persons by a husband, boyfriend, mother, father or child can get counseling. Families need to speak up and speak out against this type of behavior before the problem escalates. We can campaign more on radio, T.V. and in schools or workplace. "Fear," is an ugly emotion that can inhabit a person from peaking out against abuse, oppression and unjust confinement.

In matters such as these, the word that I prefer to choose is "Courage." Stand tall for yourself, your country, friends and family. Stand tall with courage for what is right and just. Think and research before you give power to one human being over others. We have the power within ourselves to change things. Lets' evoke our own power!

Bird Flu A Pandemic - Real or Hype

What in the world is Bird Flu? Every morning or at the end of day I sit at my computer. Sometimes I blog and other times I try to keep with news and current events.

On November 12th, 2005 I ran across an article pertaining to Bird Flu on MSNBC Health News. I was intrigued by the caption "Bird Flu" and a photo of man dressed in a blue bunny suit holding a muddy swan. My first thought was, "What will they think of next? Bird Flu? Please! Then I began to read the article in depth.

What I've learned is that rapid spread of bird flu among chickens and other fowl has caught the attention of global health authorities. There is good reason to be concerned about the old resurfaced disease. The Avian Influenza Flu has been around since 1918 (MSNBC). The potential of a high mortality rate is great; the rate is 89% percent among those younger then 15 years of age in Thailand. Most of the infected patients are young healthy children or adults (TNEJOM,Sept.29, 2005). Currently half of all person who are infected with the disease die within 9 to 10 days after the onset of the illness. Most die of progressive respiratory failure, secondary to multiple organ failure.

Scientist in Hong Kong declared they may have explained why the Bird Flu (H5N1) virus has affected so many young adults. Its causes proteins knowns as cytokines to rush to infected lung tissue, causing a fatal immune storm. (ABC NEWS, Nov 11th). In effect the virus enters an individuals's body, breaks into a cell, and hides from the immune system. Then within a few hours; the virus hijacks all the cell's life materials and replicates itself at a rapid rate.

The once single virus becomes several hundred thousand reproductions swarming in search of healthy new host cells. They cause fluid to flood the lungs, then death comes from any number of secondary problems (VF, Nov 2005-pg 270).

A similar flu occurred in 1918, killing tens of millions of people worldwide. Experts also say that it may not be quite as extreme but will be very dangerous (CNN-May 26, 2005). Representative, Michael Gurguson R - New Jersey, said at a hearing, "We're staring down the barrell of a loaded gun and that gun is ready to fire". The health officials at the hearing agreed the flu pandemic is inevitable and will most likely begin with the bird flue spreading in Asia.

A Deadly Bird Virus
This disease affects birds, and has been recently found in cats and pigs. The bird flu is categorized as an Avian Flu. There are currently 15 different types of Avian Influenza. The recent outbreak is caused by a strain known as H5N1, which is very contagious among birds. Tigers and leopards are also included in the list of animals affected by this virus. The felines were fed raw infected chickens, which caused them to be infected with the deadly disease (TNEJOM, Sept 29, 2005).

Animal to Human Transmission
This strain can be transmitted to humans causing severe illness and death (MSNBC). Individuals, who have come in direct contact with the infected poultry such as those who butcher, pluck and prepare diseased birds, handle fighting cocks, play with poultry, consumption of ducks's blood, or possibly undercooked poultry have all been implicated. Another mode of infection has been identified with oral ingestion of contaminated water during swimming and the widespread use of untreated poultry feces as fertilizer (TNEJOM, Sept 29, 2005)

The Human to Human Fear of widespread Infection
Influenza viruses are highly unstable and have the ability to mutate rapidly. The fear of widespread infection stems from the idea that someone who is already infected with the human flu catches the birds flu. This could cause the virus to mutate, producing a hybrid that could spread rapidly from human to human (MSNBC). The reason the strain is so dangerous is because most humans have never been exposed to the bird flu and therefore there is no natural immunity and currently no vaccine.

Current Events
As of today the Avian Flu has only spread from person to person twice. But experts believe a pandemic could be imminent. (CNN-Thursday,May 26, 2005). Indonesia's first human bird flue case, coupled with more birds dying elsewhere including Russia, Cruasia, China, Vietnam, Canada, Katakstan, and Mongolia are signs of a long dreaded global influenza pandemic. Margaret chan, WHO's (World Health Organization) Director stated, "This is perhaps the only time since 1968, which was the last pandemic, that we are getting signs symptoms and warning signs from nature...More and more birds are dying in different parts of the world-this is the kind of signals, and early warning that we are referring to " (China Post - July 23, 2005)

Precautions
Margaret Chan of W.H.O's new director called for influenza preparedness and stepped up disease surveillance among poultry and humans worldwide. Chan States, "We need to be very vigilant and look for signals or signs of sustained human to human transmission. We need to advise people from farm to table on what actions they can take or can advise commuinities to do to reduce the risk." (China Post July 23, 2005)

Treatment Solutions or Just Hype
The used of Antiviral Agents is another option such as: Oral Osel-Tamivir and ZanaMivir. (TNEJOM, Sept 29, 2005). Swiss drug maker Roche will increase production of Tamiflu to make 300 million treatments of the antiviral drug annaully by 2007 in order to meet government orders amid fears of the flue pandemic. (AP,CDC,WHO, Nature-Nov.7,2005) Tamiflu has been found to be most effect if used withing the first 48 hours (CNN.Com, May 26, 2006). Many governments around the world are stockpiling Tamiflu, while scientists are working hard to come up with new ways of combating this deadly virus. The reason scientist are still working hard to come up with a vaccine is because Tamiflu may be of little or no use whatsoever (MSNBC).

Should we be concerned?
Currently there are some people who believe that this is just a lot of hype. Dr. Marc Siegal in the Los Angels Times was quoted as saying, "Even if we take the Spanish Flu as a model, we've come a long way since 1918, when "There were no flu vaccinations and no antiviral drugs". And most Virologists believe that currently the bird flu has a very low chance of jumping the species barrier. and turning into a global nighmare. Once again, fearmongers have taken a real health threat and blown it out of all proportion - just as they did with SARS, West Nile virus, Anthrax, and mad cow disease. The lesson of these previous panics is clear: "The worst case is not the only case" (TWM 10/14/2005)

Conclusion
To conclude there should be some concern about this deadly disease. Education is the answer to resolve current fears about the (H5N1) virus. We should keep a watchful eye on current events pertaining to this deadly virus. We should warn our children not to pick up or remove dead animals. Then if we are in the midst of such a predicament;we should report the dead animal to the proper authorities.

However, until we do or don't see an outbreak, we should remain comforted in the knowledge we are now made aware of a potential outbreak and measures can be taken to prevent such a disaster.
