Ars Lyrica Houston is honored to announce that their world première recording of J.A. Hasse’s Marc Antonio e Cleopatra has been nominated for a 2011 Grammy Award.

Additionally, Ars Lyrica Houston is honored to represent the only US recording nominated in the Opera Category. The work was originally performed on December 31st, 2009 at the annual Ars Lyrica New Year’s Eve performance and Gala, recorded, and later distributed through the Dorian label. The recording features Jamie Barton, mezzo-soprano; Ava Pine, soprano; Matthew Dirst, conductor.

Hasse’s Marc Antonio e Cleopatra double CD set was recently hailed by the Toronto Star, “One couldn’t ask for a finer world-première recording of this 1725 operatic dialogue between Cleopatra and her lover, Marc Antony.” This must-have recording, features two of the brightest young American opera stars: mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton as Marc Antonio and soprano Ava Pine as Cleopatra.

Italian violinist Giuliano Carmignola is one of Europe's best soloists specializing in the Baroque violin.

He was born to a musical family and started playing violin at the age of five, taught by his violinist father, Antonio Carmignola. Eventually he studied at the Conservatorio Benedetto Marcello in Venice, where his teachers were Luigi Ferro and Sergio Lorenzi. Commentators remark on the cantabile Venetian quality to his playing.

This is, quite simply, one of the most splendid Handel opera recordings ever made. We owe a debt of gratitude to DG/Universal for reissuing this much-admired Westminster recording from 1965.The opera itself is one of Handel's finest; a late work magically integrating farce and pathos, and filled with an abundance of brilliant invention remarkable even for Handel.

Priestman does full justice to the kaleidoscopic shifts of mood, affect, idiom and orchestration that makes this work a viable musical entertainment today no less than in 1738. Though Priestman's Viennese forces play modern instruments, the conductor obviously has a solid understanding of Baroque performance practice (according to the musicological priorities of his day). Ornaments are generously supplied and correctly executed; rhythms are fetchingly sprung; phrasing and articulation nimbly turn all of the corners of Handel's often unpredictable musical argument; tempos are upbeat, and the harpsichord continuo is imaginatively (if rather busily) realized by Martin Isepp. The orchestral ensemble is simply splendid: I wouldn't be surprised if members of the VPO were moonlighting on this occasion.

Antonio Lucio Vivaldi, a grandson of Agostino's, was born in Venice on March 4th, 1678. His father, Giambattista, who was requested by Legrenzi to enter the of St. Mark in 1685, taught him to play violin (there is no evidence of other teachers) and was indeed a good teacher for Vivaldi, only at the age of ten, could take his father's place in the orchestra. Vivaldi, after a rapid rise through the minor orders, was ordained on March 23rd, 1703 and was then appointed teacher at the , a girl orphanage in Venice. How Vivaldi could thereafter attain the high level attested by musical history as a composer as well as his success as a teacher, witnessed by the contemporary chronicles, remains a mystery, as it is often the case with such geniuses as he was.

Mathilde von Guise was one of Hummel’s best known operas, partly because the composer actually issued a printed piano score which was published in Leipzig in 1823. It was written for Vienna where it was premiered, in German, at the Kartnertortheater. As was the case with all German lyric drama at the time, it was in the form of a singspiel: with spoken dialogue.

What a treat for any lover of Baroque chamber music, to dip into this boxed set and pull out something to suit your fancy. For fans of Il Giardino Armonico's flamboyant flourishes and exuberant expressiveness, it's like having all your birthdays at once, being presented with this great Warner Classics 11 CD set. My own feeling is that this "free" approach to Baroque music is at its best when applied to the theatrical music of disc 8 or the seventeenth century Italian music on disc 1. The showmanship and playfulness is an absolute joy in many of those pieces. I'm less satisfied with the interpretations of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos, (on discs 10 and 11), which require a different approach, I feel. I like my Bach to be a little more measured and subtle, I suppose. It has no need of the Il Giardino Armonico treatment. On the whole, though, I do love this set and wouldn't be without it. (WAB)

This was Joan Sutherland's second recording of Lucia, made with an all-star cast in prime vocal condition, and it is a must for those who believe that bel canto opera should live up to its descriptive title: "beautiful singing."

In the 10 years since her first Lucia recording, she had settled more comfortably into the character and become even more expert in the music. Her costars are among the greatest singers of our time, a point that is particularly important in the ensemble singing. Maria Callas is more dramatic, and her Lucia is a must for Callas fans, but this set is a joyful celebration of the glory of the human voice. This highly anticipated recording of Monteverdi's Vespro della Beata Vergine is a new construction by Rinaldo Alessandrini. Alessandrini is one of the world's foremost Monteverdi authorities, and an all-around expert on Baroque music. His 2003 recording of Vivaldi's Vespers garnered a Gramophone Award in 2004. Monteverdi is one of our most important composers, having essentially built the bridge from the Renaissance period to the Baroque. He faced both criticism and fame in his time, as he broke tradition and rule to achieve musical goals that would eventually become the standard.

Rinaldo Alessandrini's brilliantly realized recording of Monteverdi's Vespers is an intimate, slightly pared down version of the early Baroque masterpiece. Working in the warm acoustic of Rome's Palazzo Farnese, he employs just one singer per part, and eliminates instrumental doublings in the choral movements except where they are expressly indicated. The result is a compact, richly haloed sound that won't ever knock you out of your chair, but which flatters the more intimate solo and duet movements that can sound anemic in grander productions; with the sound gap between the biggest and smallest movements closed, each holds its own within the overall structure of the piece. While Alessandrini deserves credit for his conception and leadership, and especially his insightful treatment of Monteverdi's ever-changing rhythmic flow, it is his group of 12 singers that make the strongest impression. Their cohesive ensemble singing, marked by flawless intonation and richly colored sonorities, has a solidity and emotional resonance worthy of a much bigger group. More importantly, they are unusually interesting soloists, singing with elasticity, expressivity, and tonal warmth without sacrificing exactness. The Concerto Italiano is as good an original instrument ensemble as you're likely to hear anywhere, and its performance here is flawless. These are world premiere recordings and these Handel specialists have once again scored a major coup. Alessandro Severo is based on the life of a Roman emperor of the third century and is in the form of a pasticcio, an Italian term meaning a jumble or hodgepodge. In the operatic context, it refers to a work made up of music composed for another occasion and reused with little or no change. Manzaro composed the Greek national anthem and the discovery of an opera by him was a major find by the Greek conductor George Petrou. Armonia Atenia perform on period instruments.

In 2010, it has been 170 years since the greatest Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born (07.05.1840 – 06.11.1893). Firma Melodiya times the release of the album P.I. Tchaikovsky: Forgotten Pages to this event.

The recording of the concert devoted to the 150th anniversary of the composer presented on this CD includes some rarely performed compositions unveiling new dimensions of his talent and can't help but arouse the keenest interest. These compositions were brilliantly performed at the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory by the State Academic Symphony Orchestra conducted by Evgeny Svetlanov.

Christoph Graupner (1683-1760) attended the Thomasschule in Leipzig, where his teacher, Johann Kuhnau, was Bach’s predecessor as cantor. Between 1730 and 1735, Graupner worked on a huge collection of not less than 5625 four-part canons on the same theme whereby he apparently hoped to penetrate the secrets of this most tightly-governed genre in music.

Paul McCreesh and the Gabrieli Consort and Players have become famous for their recreations of the great liturgical set pieces of the Venetian 16th and early 17th centuries. These recordings made by Deutsche Grammophon in the 1990s are state of the art and were critically acclaimed. In this 5Cd set we are taken back to St Mark’s Basilica, the most important church in the city-state, and the Confraternity of San Rocco, for which Giovanni Gabrieli and his colleague the falsetto Bartolemeo Barbarino composed remarkable collection of instrumental and vocal music. This recording includes wide range of Gabrieli’s work, from intimate motets, to the reconstructed glory of the 33 part Magnificat On CDs 1 and 2 we are in St Mark’s at Easter time in 1600. The smell of incense hangs in the chill air of the basilica and the huge building resonates with sound of voices – the service has begun. The central work is the Missa Congratulamini mihi by Lassus. As was customary, the Credo has been omitted, and substituted with non-liturgical vocal works by composers such as Giovanni and Alessandro Gabrieli, Bendinelli, and Merulo. Organ toccatas, Sacrae symphonea and other vocal works are placed between the movements of the Mass. The Venetian Vespers on CDs 3 and 4 again draws on music from a variety of composers as services such as the vespers at this time were often made up of movements of Mass and Vespers settings by different composers. The composer of the most famous setting of the Vespers, Claudio Monteverdi features here with his Messa et salmi, alongside Banchieri, Cavalli, and Giovanni Gabrieli.

What a recording! The engagement of each participant is absolute; they take pleasure in rendering this music, in all of its facets. The proofs are too numerous to list them all here; let's just take a few examples: the voice of Pilar Figueras, as charming as the one of her sister (Ludus de Passione), the inimitable verve of René Zosso (Officium lusorum), the recorder played with skill by René Clemencic (everywhere). Above all, the pieces grouping the whole ensemble (In taberna quando sumus, Bacche bene venies) are full of life and imagination. Sometimes the voices are bad, but that's part of the game! For people looking for emotions, of all kinds.

The courageous and scholarly reconstruction of the traditional Carmina Burana ("Lyrics from Benediktbeuren") by Dr René Clemencic and his group of singers and instrumentalists presents a spirited and lively picture of student (and clerical) life between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries. It includes exuberant songs of eating and drinking as well as songs of tender freshness telling of springtime and love. The "Dicers' Mass" (Officium Lusorum) parodies many well known Gregorian chants. Its satire would only come naturally to those who knew their service-books backwards and whose lives were largely taken up with the work of preparing and singing the liturgy. For this reason this 'mass' has an astonishing dimension of sheer familiarity.

This recording by Cullan Bryant and Dmitry Rachmanov gives fans of piano duet music the chance to hear a couple of rarities, plus Beethoven's duets on period instruments.

Beethoven and His Teachers mixes the works of Beethoven with pieces by three men known to have taught the great master at some point. Christian Gottlob Neefe was an organist and opera conductor mostly known for being Beethoven's first significant composition teacher, but he also made piano arrangements of and prepared vocal-piano scores for Mozart's opera music. His Six Easy Pieces from Die Zauberflöte are quite charming and capture several of the most famous melodies. Johann Georg Albrechtsberger, a friend of the Haydns, taught Beethoven harmony and counterpoint. Albrechtsberger's Prelude and Fugue is a Classical-era take on the Baroque form, but it still uses a few of the ornamental and fantasia traits of the earlier period. Haydn's Il Maestro e lo Scolare, well-known to duet students, but rarely recorded, is performed by Bryant and Rachmanov quite winningly, both acting as equal partners in agreeable imitation throughout the variations. Among the highlights of Beethoven's duets are the duo's reading of the Waldstein Variations, WoO 67, and the Variations on Ich denke dein, WoO 74, for which they are joined by Maria Ferrante, who sings the theme of the work. The inclusion of Beethoven's own transcription of the Grosse Fuge is of interest because of the use of the historical instrument, but, even as well as Bryant and Rachmanov play it, it doesn't quite live up to the effectiveness of the string quartet version. Overall, however, this recording is a great choice for those looking for original instrument performances of this repertoire.
