Under the Sea on Main Street

Paint the Night features plenty of dazzling floats from some of Disney's most beloved and famed animated classics, including a calypso of color in The Little Mermaid. Preceded by dancers dressed as glowing choral, the float itself features Ariel enjoying life under the sea with his friends, Flounder and Sebastian, and King Triton carrying his mighty trident. Spinning jellyfish and Nemo and Marlin carry on the aquatic theme. It's a spectacular underwater scene, shining and shimmering, transforming the Disneyland parade route into a ocean wonderland. Or is it wondersea?

California Daydreaming Back

Today's photo digs back into the inner recesses of my Disneyland photos... that were shot in RAW format. It was not long after I started this blog nearly 14 years ago that I stopped photographing in JPEG and switched to RAW to allow more flexibility and adaptability when editing photos. It marked a more serious shift in my hobbyist photography, and I've enjoyed capturing countless scenic moments ever since.

This perspective is also nostalgic, because it represents Disney California Adventure before its more overt IP-fication that started when the park relaunched its "DCA 2.0" self with a whole land dedicated to an intellectual property--Cars--and continued with the later conversions of Paradise Pier into Pixar Pier, Pacific Wharf into San Fransokyo Square, and the introduction of Avengers Campus. Instead, back then, most of DCA's themed lands were homages to parts of Californial. Paradise Pier? A tribute to the heyday of seaside amusement parks and piers during the mid-20th century. And though the franchise-based attractions that have been added to or converted at California Adventure certainly have proven to be popular, there's something wistful about the original inspiration of the park.

The Resort on the Beach

Rising up along the Ko Olina coast, Disney's Aulani Hotel is a tropical paradise of a resort, steeped in deep Hawaiian history and culture, drawing inspiration from the island's vernacular architecture, and set within an island Eden that enhances the already gorgeous environment all around. There are different ways the hotel can be glimpsed, both from afar and up close, but I like this view through the palm trees, almost as though one is happening upon this impressive and scenic view. It might be a towering hotel, but it's almost as though Aulani is exclaiming, "Oh, look, you've found me!"

The Landscape by the Sea

Long before Universal's Epic Universe opened, Tokyo Disney Sea defined what it means for a theme park to be epic. Expansive ports of call, creative themes, thematic hyper realism, and a collection of fantastic attractions quickly put the park in competition for the best in the world, and even if people didn't think TDS was number one, most agreed it was the most beautiful. The grandeur stems from how every facet of the park exudes escapism on a fantastic, magnificent scale. Where else can you see a life size volcano spewing smoke and fire, just to make a park icon type of statement? Or a Renaissance fortress sprawling along an exotic waterfront? That doesn't even get into an Arabian oasis, a hidden jungle, a sea port of tomorrow, America across several eras, and an undersea dreamscape? And just last year, Tokyo Disney Sea expanded into its 8th theme port of call, the equivalent of the park's Fantasyland, bringing even more dazzling sights and rides.

Indeed, this is the definition of epic. And it's easy to see why this theme park was branded as the Sea of Dreams!

Fairy Tale Ice Cream

My 2014 trip to Disneyland Paris may have happened nearly a dozen years ago, but the beautiful photographic conditions of that trip are still paying dividends through a still fruitful repository of unedited photos capturing golden hour bliss through the most fantastical of Disney Magic Kingdoms. The lighting when I was exploring Fantasyland was particularly glowing, and even simple photos of quick serve snack stands looked lovely and uplifting thanks to the pastel colors and golden daylight. The quieter than expected corners of the park also offered scenes that felt more personal, getting away from the busy bustle that most people associate with Disney parks. It all added up to a dream of a visit, with photos that retain a similar feel!

Blue Hour on the Lazy River

Disney's Aulani Resort & Spa is a spectacular, immersive property that takes its already spectacular Hawaiian setting and amplifies the atmosphere and theming even further. The hotel's visual and thematic storytelling weave authentic Hawaiian culture and history into its architecture, artwork, theming elements, paintings, and even soundscape. This is not the only instance of Disney taking a local setting as a theme for its property--Disney California Adventure was originally wholly a celebration of California while being located in California, while the Ratatouille mini-land brings Paris to life outside of Paris. But there's something epic about the way Aulani does it!

While the lazy river of the Waikolohe Stream is closed in the evening hours, its illuminated waterways make for a beautiful blue hour atmosphere at the Aulani Resort!

Batuu's Midnight Tranquility

Late last year, I did a late night photo run at Disneyland that was remarkably efficient, as I stumbled upon empty scene after empty scene before park closing hours--something that practically never happens for me. My time walking through Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge was particularly memorable, as a heavy blanket of fog had settled onto the park at this hour of the night, adding a mysterious vibe to the environment. With no one else around, I felt like I had an entire galaxy far far away to myself, and if I hadn't been trying to catch one last scene before park closing and the end of night security sweeps, I would have lingered to savor this even more. But I was able to capture quiet scenes like this that echoed the bit of magic I used to more regularly enjoy when my late night photo runs were more frequent.

The Start of a Beautiful Partnership

They're not as prominent and front and center as their more classic and mature selves over at The Hub at the end of Main Street, USA, in Disneyland. But Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse get another iteration of their memorialization in Disney California Adventure in the Storytellers Statue, which represens the iconic duo as they arrived in Southern California--Walt from Missouri and Mickey from a fateful cross-country train ride after a moment of crushing disappointment. Little did they know the legends they would be come, all through each other. Here, they were still young and sort of wide eyed and looking to make their mark in the business. And boy, did they!

13 Years of Mystic Manor

Thirteen years ago, the best Disney ride in the world opened to the world in Disney's quietest Magic Kingdom park. Mystic Manor, a trackless dark ride that's a whimsical, fantastical take on the Haunted Mansion, trades ghosts for enchantment, telling the story of Lord Henry Mystic's collection of artefacts and treasures from all around the world becoming animated by the spell of a wondrous music box when it's opened by Lord Henry's adorable but mischievous pet monkey, Albert. This ride captures the pure joy that Disney Imagineering magic can make, weaving an original story with mythology from all around the world and sprinkling in technological wizardry to create an awe-inspiring and magnificent ride.

Mystic Manor may not be a traditional Haunt Mansion ride, but it certainly carries its spirit at heart, and so on this, its 13th birthday, it's fitting to celebrate this attraction of marvel!

Aulani's Views to the Sea

Most of my pictures from Aulani are pictures of Aulani--the hotel tours, the landscaped grounds, the thematic elements, and more. But today's post contains photos from Aulani--specifically, vistas that Aulani frames to the Pacific Ocean. The verdant palm trees, the azure blue sky, the calm and lapping waters, and the warm, welcoming sand paint the stereotypical image of paradise. These views look like a heavenly escape from real life, and they do conjure a joyous ambiance. Just enjoy a few of the magnificent scenes below from Disney's Hawaiian masterpiece!

Waiting to Set Sail

Tokyo Disney Sea's devotion to its maritime theme is impressive, because waterside themed ports of call naturally demand watercraft, and there are plenty of boats in this most gorgeous theme park. And while a few of them form the Disney Sea Transit Steamer Line ferries, and there are Venetian Gondolas cruising around, the vast majority are stationary theming vessels. They're not rides. They're just part of the placemaking. Yes, Disney created plenty of boats to drift in the water and look pretty. But they enhance the ambiance so well! They're a wonderful part of the incredible atmosphere of this Sea of Dreams!

Moments on Main Street

Main Street is always a beautiful, nostalgic, scenic path that sets the stage for the wonderful themed lands ahead in the Magic Kingdom. On a beautiful day, the hustle and bustle and Americana charm make for an evocative environment that transports guests back to an idyllic "simpler" time. The architecture, the plantings, and the guests combine for an enchanting ambiance, and I enjoy capturing little snapshots that focus on little moments of the day. It's that smalltown feel, offering a coziness and comfort, that people feel and love so much!

Hyperspace Blue Hour

The magic of Disneyland Paris' Discoveryland really comes to life after the sun sets, when the glowing hues of this land illuminate and enhance the cool colors that link sea and sky with a nod to the far reaches of space. And in the photo below, taken during a Star Wars-themed Hyperspace Mountain overlay, the evening blue hour suggests the hue of Star Wars' hyperspace, streaking on through the cosmos. It's a pretty scene and beautiful ambiance--once that is distinct to this park!

Aulani's Afternoon Glow

The first time I ever visited Aulani, I thought the lagoon behind the hotel was private and closed off, so I never bothered to venture over. Only after I had completed my visit did I realize that it was not exclusive, guest-only property. So the next time I visited, I made sure to photograph this beautiful Hawaiian hotel from the ocean side, capturing the warm glow of the afternoon sun casting its shine on the majestic dual wings. With a cozy, sandy shore, pretty palm trees, and a wonderfully blue sky, this scene was pure paradise. And it provided a great vista to imprint on camera!

A Verdant Worldview

It's a Small World is renown for its classic, geometrically striking ride building facade, famously designed by artist Mary Blair. Whimsical, elegant, and full of fancy, it's an iconic design that has become synonymous with the attraction. But the landscaping outside of the ride is also playfully memorable, with toparies and colorful flowers and manicured shrubbery providing a scenic and photogenic foreground and frame to a ride that promises a world of laughter and a world of fun. It's played a part in many a Disney fan's childhood memories, and it continues to entertain guests from all over today!

Glowing San Fransokyo

If you've paid attention, you know that I love taking photos of the iconic Torii Gate Bridge in San Fransokyo Square. It's evocative and monumental, and when I catch the perspective that shows the light-up PORT OF SAN FRANSOKYO in the background, it gives even more Japanese vibes than the bridge already does by itself. The eclectic nighttime energy here feels like something from Osaka's Dontobori district or Tokyo's Shibuya or Shinjuku. It's luminous, vibrant, and a really fantastic scene. From near or afar, the Imagineers did a terrific job with this refresh of the old Pacific Wharf. It's truly an environment well done!

Boating Down the Lost River

Tokyo Disney Sea is a park themed unlike any other in Disney's worldwide catalog, but there are some areas that have Magic Kingdom parallels. Port Discovery is sort of like an aquatic Tomorrowland. American Waterfront carries a certain Americana nostalgia similar to Main Street, U.S.A. And Lost River Delta most certainly functions like a port version of Adventureland (and next door, Arabian Coast's desert oasis vibes harken to a small portion of Disneyland Paris' Adventureland). Lost River Delta is also home to an Indiana Jones Adventure attraction, much like Disneyland Anaheim's Adventureland. The jungle surroundings and exotic ambiance provide a fantastic sense of escapism, and scenes like the one below feel like they could be something straight out of Latin America. It's part of what makes Tokyo Disney Sesa so unmistakably a "Sea of Dreams."

The Sleeping Desert

The nice thing about taking way too many photos at Disney parks is that you can always go back hunting for captures that you meant to process once upon a time but never got around to, and then "discover" a magical moment all over again. Such is the case with the photo below, featuring a blissful moment after hours in Frontierland from a dozen years ago. The rugged Western landscape of Frontierland always feels serenely majestic in the late night ambiance, and the atmosphere around the Rancho del Zocalo features an extra bit of vibrance with the colorful hanging lamps that line the outdoor dining area. This peaceful scene makes for an enchanting environment, and it provides a memory of the lovely late night photo runs I used to have more commonly back when this blog was in its infancy!

Bluey's Fun Fair

Outside of the two unique shows at Bluey's Best Day ever, the grounds of the Fantasyland Theatre have also been transformed into nice little festival set at Bluey's school, featuring plenty of references to the popular Bluey television series. There are photo ops with the family car, Bobo; Bluey's school class photo; gnomes and sculptures at the Gnome Garden; Bluey's tree stump helicopter; and the structures and plants of the Fairy Garden. There's a particularly popular offering of barky boat racing with a track to race wheeled boat vehicles down a curving course. The stage is empty, but it's a great backdrop as well. And there are painted backdrops and artwork for more Bluey callbacks, like Flappy the butterfly or quotes from certain episodes. It's colorful and whimsical and seems to be a hit with children and adults alike. And as a Bluey fan myself, I do appreciate the effort Disney has put into bringing a bit of the hit TV show to life!

Shadows of the Manor

Sometimes, when I've taken a photo and just absolutely messed up the exposure and introduced too much glare that even my RAW photo format cannot salvage, I'll try giving the photo a different mood. Here, at Disneyland Paris' Phantom Manor, a sepia tone, high contrast, shadowy take presented itself after I had a photo that had too much lens flare and direct sunlight. It's not the prettiest photo I've taken, but it's atmospheric!

A Garden of Reflections

In a perfect example of time flying, it's been nine and a half years since my one and only visit to the Shanghai Disneyland Resort. At that time, the park was still within its first year of operation, and as a unique Magic Kingdom that was "authentically Disney and distinctly Chinese," it was organized differently than the other Magic Kingdoms, with a Mickey Avenue instead of a Main Street, an Adventure Isle instead of an Adventureland, and a Treasure Cove instead of a... New Orleans Square? Yes, it had a Tomorrowland--albeit a radically futuristic looking one. And it did have a Fantasyland with a centrally iconic castle. But it also had a themed land comprising a central park space in front of the castle that also served as a bountiful audience space for nighttime castle spectaculars. And that Gardens of Imagination provided some great photo ops of the castle, including this mirroring one!

Matterhorn in the Spring

Ever since I returned from a European vacation two years ago that included a trip to Switzerland, my social media algorithm has been feeding me a healthy and wistful dose of content from the famed, mountainous country--especially of its alpine Berner Oberland area and Jungfrau region. Unfortunately, I have no idea when I'll be able ot make it back. So the best I can do now is find connections where I can, namely through Disneyland's Matterhorn attraction. The only one in all the Disney parks, the Matterhorn Bobsleds stands as one of Disneyland's oldest attractions and was the first steel tubular rail roller coaster in the world. And during the springtime, the verdant foliage around the ride can make certain angles of this attraction feel pretty alpine!

Blue Horizons over Tomorrowland

For the longest time, Tokyo Disneyland was sort of a museum to Magic Kingdoms--an archive of old Disney design frozen from the 1980s. The park was in terrific shape, lovingly taken care of and maintained by the Oriental Land Company. But as other Disney parks worldwide received expansions and ride replacements, Tokyo Disney largely stood pat.

This has changed over the past decade, as the park has evolved more, shifting old attractions out in favor of new. The addition of Pooh's Hunny Hunt in 2000 and Monsters Inc: Hide and Go Seek were precursors, but the Fantasyland Expansion into what used to be the Autopia really kicked things up. And currently, in Tomorrowland, there's a new Space Mountain being built that promises to be a transformative thrill ride when it opens next year. Yes, this is literally a new Space Mountain--they started building the new ride building next to the old one and then knocked the old one down. Details have been scarce for this reimagined attraction, dubbed Earthrise, will celebrate the theme of harmony with nature and a connection to the planet, and it's supposed to come with new special effects and a different layout.

This means a very different view below in the future. In fact, with the new ride building already largely complete from the outside, it already is pretty different. And I'm sure it will be pretty amazing when it opens!

This main pathway and entrance into Tokyo Disneyland's Tomorrowland looks very different nowadays, with the park's replacement Space Mountain under construction with a new take on the familiar ride building.

Golden Hollywood Not Yet Set

It might not have been very many people's prediction, but Hollywood Land is now one of the last remaining original lands at Disney California Adventure that has largely remained how it was on opening day. Still celebrating the golden age of Hollywood, it has its Animation Courtyard, familiar street facades, the Hyperion Theater (though no longer being used at the moment), and a mix of stages. Though Superstar Limo and MuppetVision 3D have been replaced by Monsters Inc: Mike and Sulley to the Rescue and Mickey's Philharmagic, respectively, and the Animation Courtyard has closed many of its old rooms, and the elephants that sat on both sides of the entrance gateway are now gone, much of the land does remain very similar to back in 2001--including that iconic mural at the end of the main pathway. Ultimately, change will overtake this land too, as the rumored Avatar attraction will take over part of this area's property. But for now, we can enjoy a part of DCA history before it fades into Yesterland!

Discoverylanding the Raw Difference

Many hobby photographers have probably heard about or even contemplated the notion of shooting their photos in JPEG vs in RAW format. The former is the universally recognized, most common image format out there. It can be edited, and while software has come a long way, there are limits to the amount of visual information that can be manipulated. On the other hand, RAW images contain a much deeper and more expansive amount of visual information captured, allowing recovery of information that may not be overtly obvious in the baseline files. Shooting in RAW can allow highlights to recover color, shadows to draw out detail, and color temperature to be enhanced and stylized. The downside is file size--RAW file are huge, but they need to be to carry so much visual information.

But sometimes, you have a scene that absolutely needs RAW format to facilitate the dramatic impact desired. In the example below, no amount of basic photo editing of a JPEG file would be able to get the default version (shown in the second image below) anywhere close to the edited RAW version of the first photo. This is particularly true in the sky, which will typically be blown out too brightly because the camera will be focused on properly exposing for hte rockwork and details of the foreground.

That's why I long ago switched to shooting my "nice" Disney photos in RAW. Even if it doesn't look like I've captured much initially, the format allows me the flexibility and ability to pull out the aspects of the photo to convey the scene in my mind's eye!
