Glowing San Fransokyo

If you've paid attention, you know that I love taking photos of the iconic Torii Gate Bridge in San Fransokyo Square. It's evocative and monumental, and when I catch the perspective that shows the light-up PORT OF SAN FRANSOKYO in the background, it gives even more Japanese vibes than the bridge already does by itself. The eclectic nighttime energy here feels like something from Osaka's Dontobori district or Tokyo's Shibuya or Shinjuku. It's luminous, vibrant, and a really fantastic scene. From near or afar, the Imagineers did a terrific job with this refresh of the old Pacific Wharf. It's truly an environment well done!

Boating Down the Lost River

Tokyo Disney Sea is a park themed unlike any other in Disney's worldwide catalog, but there are some areas that have Magic Kingdom parallels. Port Discovery is sort of like an aquatic Tomorrowland. American Waterfront carries a certain Americana nostalgia similar to Main Street, U.S.A. And Lost River Delta most certainly functions like a port version of Adventureland (and next door, Arabian Coast's desert oasis vibes harken to a small portion of Disneyland Paris' Adventureland). Lost River Delta is also home to an Indiana Jones Adventure attraction, much like Disneyland Anaheim's Adventureland. The jungle surroundings and exotic ambiance provide a fantastic sense of escapism, and scenes like the one below feel like they could be something straight out of Latin America. It's part of what makes Tokyo Disney Sesa so unmistakably a "Sea of Dreams."

The Sleeping Desert

The nice thing about taking way too many photos at Disney parks is that you can always go back hunting for captures that you meant to process once upon a time but never got around to, and then "discover" a magical moment all over again. Such is the case with the photo below, featuring a blissful moment after hours in Frontierland from a dozen years ago. The rugged Western landscape of Frontierland always feels serenely majestic in the late night ambiance, and the atmosphere around the Rancho del Zocalo features an extra bit of vibrance with the colorful hanging lamps that line the outdoor dining area. This peaceful scene makes for an enchanting environment, and it provides a memory of the lovely late night photo runs I used to have more commonly back when this blog was in its infancy!

Bluey's Fun Fair

Outside of the two unique shows at Bluey's Best Day ever, the grounds of the Fantasyland Theatre have also been transformed into nice little festival set at Bluey's school, featuring plenty of references to the popular Bluey television series. There are photo ops with the family car, Bobo; Bluey's school class photo; gnomes and sculptures at the Gnome Garden; Bluey's tree stump helicopter; and the structures and plants of the Fairy Garden. There's a particularly popular offering of barky boat racing with a track to race wheeled boat vehicles down a curving course. The stage is empty, but it's a great backdrop as well. And there are painted backdrops and artwork for more Bluey callbacks, like Flappy the butterfly or quotes from certain episodes. It's colorful and whimsical and seems to be a hit with children and adults alike. And as a Bluey fan myself, I do appreciate the effort Disney has put into bringing a bit of the hit TV show to life!

Shadows of the Manor

Sometimes, when I've taken a photo and just absolutely messed up the exposure and introduced too much glare that even my RAW photo format cannot salvage, I'll try giving the photo a different mood. Here, at Disneyland Paris' Phantom Manor, a sepia tone, high contrast, shadowy take presented itself after I had a photo that had too much lens flare and direct sunlight. It's not the prettiest photo I've taken, but it's atmospheric!

A Garden of Reflections

In a perfect example of time flying, it's been nine and a half years since my one and only visit to the Shanghai Disneyland Resort. At that time, the park was still within its first year of operation, and as a unique Magic Kingdom that was "authentically Disney and distinctly Chinese," it was organized differently than the other Magic Kingdoms, with a Mickey Avenue instead of a Main Street, an Adventure Isle instead of an Adventureland, and a Treasure Cove instead of a... New Orleans Square? Yes, it had a Tomorrowland--albeit a radically futuristic looking one. And it did have a Fantasyland with a centrally iconic castle. But it also had a themed land comprising a central park space in front of the castle that also served as a bountiful audience space for nighttime castle spectaculars. And that Gardens of Imagination provided some great photo ops of the castle, including this mirroring one!

Matterhorn in the Spring

Ever since I returned from a European vacation two years ago that included a trip to Switzerland, my social media algorithm has been feeding me a healthy and wistful dose of content from the famed, mountainous country--especially of its alpine Berner Oberland area and Jungfrau region. Unfortunately, I have no idea when I'll be able ot make it back. So the best I can do now is find connections where I can, namely through Disneyland's Matterhorn attraction. The only one in all the Disney parks, the Matterhorn Bobsleds stands as one of Disneyland's oldest attractions and was the first steel tubular rail roller coaster in the world. And during the springtime, the verdant foliage around the ride can make certain angles of this attraction feel pretty alpine!

Blue Horizons over Tomorrowland

For the longest time, Tokyo Disneyland was sort of a museum to Magic Kingdoms--an archive of old Disney design frozen from the 1980s. The park was in terrific shape, lovingly taken care of and maintained by the Oriental Land Company. But as other Disney parks worldwide received expansions and ride replacements, Tokyo Disney largely stood pat.

This has changed over the past decade, as the park has evolved more, shifting old attractions out in favor of new. The addition of Pooh's Hunny Hunt in 2000 and Monsters Inc: Hide and Go Seek were precursors, but the Fantasyland Expansion into what used to be the Autopia really kicked things up. And currently, in Tomorrowland, there's a new Space Mountain being built that promises to be a transformative thrill ride when it opens next year. Yes, this is literally a new Space Mountain--they started building the new ride building next to the old one and then knocked the old one down. Details have been scarce for this reimagined attraction, dubbed Earthrise, will celebrate the theme of harmony with nature and a connection to the planet, and it's supposed to come with new special effects and a different layout.

This means a very different view below in the future. In fact, with the new ride building already largely complete from the outside, it already is pretty different. And I'm sure it will be pretty amazing when it opens!

This main pathway and entrance into Tokyo Disneyland's Tomorrowland looks very different nowadays, with the park's replacement Space Mountain under construction with a new take on the familiar ride building.

Golden Hollywood Not Yet Set

It might not have been very many people's prediction, but Hollywood Land is now one of the last remaining original lands at Disney California Adventure that has largely remained how it was on opening day. Still celebrating the golden age of Hollywood, it has its Animation Courtyard, familiar street facades, the Hyperion Theater (though no longer being used at the moment), and a mix of stages. Though Superstar Limo and MuppetVision 3D have been replaced by Monsters Inc: Mike and Sulley to the Rescue and Mickey's Philharmagic, respectively, and the Animation Courtyard has closed many of its old rooms, and the elephants that sat on both sides of the entrance gateway are now gone, much of the land does remain very similar to back in 2001--including that iconic mural at the end of the main pathway. Ultimately, change will overtake this land too, as the rumored Avatar attraction will take over part of this area's property. But for now, we can enjoy a part of DCA history before it fades into Yesterland!

Discoverylanding the Raw Difference

Many hobby photographers have probably heard about or even contemplated the notion of shooting their photos in JPEG vs in RAW format. The former is the universally recognized, most common image format out there. It can be edited, and while software has come a long way, there are limits to the amount of visual information that can be manipulated. On the other hand, RAW images contain a much deeper and more expansive amount of visual information captured, allowing recovery of information that may not be overtly obvious in the baseline files. Shooting in RAW can allow highlights to recover color, shadows to draw out detail, and color temperature to be enhanced and stylized. The downside is file size--RAW file are huge, but they need to be to carry so much visual information.

But sometimes, you have a scene that absolutely needs RAW format to facilitate the dramatic impact desired. In the example below, no amount of basic photo editing of a JPEG file would be able to get the default version (shown in the second image below) anywhere close to the edited RAW version of the first photo. This is particularly true in the sky, which will typically be blown out too brightly because the camera will be focused on properly exposing for hte rockwork and details of the foreground.

That's why I long ago switched to shooting my "nice" Disney photos in RAW. Even if it doesn't look like I've captured much initially, the format allows me the flexibility and ability to pull out the aspects of the photo to convey the scene in my mind's eye!

The Colors of Cars

Coming in as the third scene in the Paint the Night parade, the Cars segment features high energy, multi-color, sensory stimulating energy and dance. Lightning McQueen leads the way, flanked by dancers who move to a motorized beat. Popping and grooving to the unforgettably catchy theme song, theses dancers change colors and provide a great performance on their own. If that wasn't enough, Mac brings an almost psychedelic flair to the parade, with a 3-D lattice of lights creating patterns in all directions. It's a fantastic display of dynamic arts that is part of what makes Paint the Night such a beloved instant classic of a nighttime spectacular!

Aulani's Sunset Panorama

Longtime readers of this blog will know that I don't often have good sunset luck. For a long time, it felt as though when I was in Disney parks or properties with my camera, sunsets would be average, and when spectacular sunsets did happen, I was either not at the Disney park or was but without my fancy camera. Of course, since most of my visits are to the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, and Southern California sunsets are not that frequently dramatic, this trend does make some sense. There's always a little bit of luck in photography.

But when I do catch a nice sunset, it can be pretty spectacular, and this view from my last trip to Aulani is a great example. This photo doesn't show anything overtly Aulani, but it is taken from the lagoon that is behind the hotel property, looking westward toward the Pacific. On this day, the clouds, sun, and colors aligned for what could only be described as the epitome of a scene in paradise--beautiful green palms, a few people in the water, and a vibrant blaze of scenery laid out all across the vista. It's the type of scene that makes one feel at peace and calm--taking me back to the time and memory of such an amazing view.

Disney Forestation

The rustic beauty of Grizzly Peak--particularly around the Grizzly River Run area--is one of the parts of Disney California Adventure that has always felt incredibly immersive and top caliber. As the vegetation has really grown in over the years, this attraction has become even more atmospheric and evocative. The waterways, rocks, trees, and national park feel make this area scenic and beautiful. And Grizzly River Run's exciting splashdown and lovely riverbends provide some great photo ops from all angles!

Here Come the Grannies!

My favorite alter ego characters from Bluey are the grannies--Bluey and Bingo (and Muffin) in their old lady costumes pretending to be different types of grannies. They have their hilarious voices, recurring characteristics, and wonderful chaos they spread around them in their imaginative play. And they're pretty popular with a lot of Bluey fans. So when it came time to make a Bluey show at Disney, the grannies naturally had to be included.

Grannies appears in one of the two different Bluey's Best Day every shows that rotate back and forth with each other at the Fantasyland Theatre. With Bluey's nice granny, Bingo's hard of hearing granny, and Muffin's grouchy granny, the segment is packed with fun references from the show, from Muffin on Facey Time to the blankets and disguises to flossing. The stage actors dress up, diving all in with the bit, and the result is a fun and entertaining several minutes until the show moves onto its next scene. I'm biased, though. I say this is the best part of the show!

Maleficent Through the Mist

If this dragon looks familiar yet different, that's because this beastly version of Maleficent is from the now-defunct Tokyo Disney Sea version of FANTASMIC! In contrast to the land-based Disneyland and Walt Disney World iterations, Tokyo Disney Sea's spectacular was bound by the waters of Mediterranean Harbor, and it featured literal floats and watercraft moving all around the lagoon. And it it's most impressive trick, in the climactic moment of the show, Maleficent's head and neck rise up through the Magic Mirror and spew fire onto the waters. The actions are similar to the other FANTASMIC! shows, but the reveal is pretty amazing. It's a bummer that this show isn't still around, but the reality at Tokyo Disney is that a demanding populace that really loves seeing new shows every few years doesn't really allow very many shows to have a lengthy run. And Tokyo Disney's FANTASMIC! was a much longer run than most shows there!

Guardians in Golden Hour

Golden hour is always a beautiful time to photograph, with that lovely, warm light enhancing any subject or scene. But on the Guardians of the Galaxy attraction at Disney California Adventure, golden hour really makes the ride building pop, enhancing its already golden exterior and making it practically luminous. Now, I know that in the past, I've criticized the Guardians ride building for being gaudy, and it is, but with the passage of time, I've gotten used to this part of the DCA skyline. And now it's a familiar part of the Disneyland Resort. And it looks pretty vibrant when that afternoon sun hits it just right!

Walt Disney--A Magical Life

As part of the Disneyland 70th Anniversary celebrations, Disney Imagineers temporarily paused the classic Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln show at the Main Street Opera House and replaced it with a new Walt Disney--A Magical Life show that details the crushing challenges and triumphant successes of the one and only Walt Disney. Not only that, this show also features the first ever audio animatronic of Walt Disney--a fitting tribute given Walt could be called the grandfather of audio animatronics. Now, much was initially fussed over regarding the appearance of the animatronic and how it didn't quite look like Walt. Certainly, the early publicity stills stoked some criticsm.

Well, I finally had some time to watch the show--nine months later, and while I think the animatronic's face could have been a little better, it doesn't look as odd in real life as I thought when I saw the photos. The face seems a little shorter than I would have imagined, but it looks like Walt. And watching the animatronic speak and move in real life does much to reassure the illusion that Walt has been brought back to narrate his incredible experiences. Sometimes, photos and real life don't exactly illustrate the same thing. But to each their own, and you can judge for yourself.

Bayside Curves

Winter is solidly behind us, and warming weather beckons toward the sunny days of summer ahead. This means lovely, blue skies and vibrant settings. And at Disney California Adventure, nothing embodies this casual spirit more than the waters of Paradise Bay. Bordering Pixar Pier and Paradise Park, this body of water is lovely backdrop and home to sensational nighttime shows. And frankly, its scenic views are what the kids call a vibe.

The boardwalk along Paradise Bay leads toward marvelous views of the iconic Pixar Pal-A-Round and Incredicoaster.

Wildlife of the Jungle River Cruise

Hong Kong Disneyland doesn't have a Jungle Cruise, they have a Jungle River Cruise. And while it is similar to its slapstick brethren around the world, this version tries to incorporate a greater sense of drama, adventure, and intrigue. But its till pretty familar--there are animatronic elephants, snakes, crocodiles, apes, rhinos, and more. The Jungle River Cruise also spans a larger area, taking up a route more akin to navigating the Rivers of America. In fact, it does literally circle around an island with Tarzan's Treehouse. But the attraction will offer guests plenty of sights, and its three language options are offered to accommodate both international, local, and neighboring guests. The Architecture of Shanghai Fantasyland

Like most of Shanghia Disneyland, Fantasyland is a little bit different from the traditional Disney Magic Kingdoms. Instead of a more immersive and encompassing European village feel, Shanghai's Fantasyland seems to feature more individual structures that serve as their own visual attractions, stretching across the back half of the park to create its ambiance. The buildings themselves are detailed and evocative, with a fairytale feel to them. Here are just a few photos of the general atmosphere at Shanghai Disneyland's Fantasyland!

Bluey's Best Show Ever

Bluey's Best Day ever has landed at Disneyland, and it highlighted by not one but two different Bluey stage shows at the Fantasyland Theatre! When I visited a few weeks ago on this event's first day of operation, I was only able to catch one of the two shows, so another visit is in order. The show I did see was a charming production with plenty of references to the popular cartoon series, including appearances by Unicorse, Muffin (on Faceytalk), Chattermax, and more. Bluey and Bingo dance around with performers and a five piece band, doing the floss, enjoying the atmosphere, and playing games. It's a cute production that is surprisingly lengthy--over thirty minutes. But for fans of the show, it's a heart-warming tribute to a show that has taken kids and adults by storm. And now that it's at Disneyland, well... hooray!!

France's Global Cruise

The happiest cruise that ever set sail travels all around the world, and it sets sail from all around the world too! It's a Small World is a beloved Disney park attraction that originated in Anaheim and has homes in Florida, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and (as shown here) Paris. Each retains that unmistakeable earworm, and each has its own approach to the show building and queue. Disneyland Paris' is tucked away in the back of Fantasyland, not unlike how it is in Anaheim, but features a more colorful facade and a lovely fountain in front. It's a pretty setting and a pretty scene, and an ode to the children and the joy of the world!

Aulani Shacks

In addition to all its grandeur and beauty and ambiance, the Aulani Resort also has its fair share of restaurants and shops. And in the middle of the Waikolohe Valley, there is a small little cluster of them that feels like a beachside collection of snack shacks and souvenir stalls offering refreshment and treats to beach-goers. It's a bit of thematic atmosphere not unlike what one might encounter at a Disney theme park, but Aulani is a hotel, not a park. Yet, what makes it so great is the level of detail crafted throughout the property, giving a wonderfully enveloping environment that brings an already beautiful Hawaiian setting to something even more escapist and lovely!

The East on the West

There's a fun play on direction and inspiration in this scene--an afternoon ambiance from Tokyo Disney Sea featuring a romanticized portrayal of a part of the Atlantic Coast. It's the American East in the Far East, but if this was the real Cape Cod, the afternoon wouldn't see the sun setting over the water, because that's west--and inland. At Tokyo Disney Sea, though, the American Waterfront is on the west side of the park, so you get this reversal of geographic consistency within the illusion. Though to Asia, the United States is all to the west--it's in the western half of the world as maps portray it, after all. If all of this has you turned around, then just focus on the peaceful end-of-day atmosphere. In a park that is often packed and bustling, American Waterfront's Cape Cod area offers a consistent oasis of relaxation and reflection. When there are so many directions happening, sometimes it's best to just be still.

The Torii Gate Bridge, Day and Night

Today's post features two angles and two time periods of the Torii Gate Bridge. In addition to being taken two years apart, at the two different parts of the day, and from two perspectives, these snapshots showcase the iconic presence and ambiance-building that this connecting structure has to liven and activate the San Fransokyo Square area. Though half of the bridge is the same trussed structure as the original Pacific Wharf entrance, the addition of the torii gate pylons creates a striking visual effect and wonderfully ties this "weenie" to the Big Hero 6 theme. It's great how a rather simple, bold gesture can make a scene feel totally different from before!
