Aulani Shacks

In addition to all its grandeur and beauty and ambiance, the Aulani Resort also has its fair share of restaurants and shops. And in the middle of the Waikolohe Valley, there is a small little cluster of them that feels like a beachside collection of snack shacks and souvenir stalls offering refreshment and treats to beach-goers. It's a bit of thematic atmosphere not unlike what one might encounter at a Disney theme park, but Aulani is a hotel, not a park. Yet, what makes it so great is the level of detail crafted throughout the property, giving a wonderfully enveloping environment that brings an already beautiful Hawaiian setting to something even more escapist and lovely!

The East on the West

There's a fun play on direction and inspiration in this scene--an afternoon ambiance from Tokyo Disney Sea featuring a romanticized portrayal of a part of the Atlantic Coast. It's the American East in the Far East, but if this was the real Cape Cod, the afternoon wouldn't see the sun setting over the water, because that's west--and inland. At Tokyo Disney Sea, though, the American Waterfront is on the west side of the park, so you get this reversal of geographic consistency within the illusion. Though to Asia, the United States is all to the west--it's in the western half of the world as maps portray it, after all. If all of this has you turned around, then just focus on the peaceful end-of-day atmosphere. In a park that is often packed and bustling, American Waterfront's Cape Cod area offers a consistent oasis of relaxation and reflection. When there are so many directions happening, sometimes it's best to just be still.

The Torii Gate Bridge, Day and Night

Today's post features two angles and two time periods of the Torii Gate Bridge. In addition to being taken two years apart, at the two different parts of the day, and from two perspectives, these snapshots showcase the iconic presence and ambiance-building that this connecting structure has to liven and activate the San Fransokyo Square area. Though half of the bridge is the same trussed structure as the original Pacific Wharf entrance, the addition of the torii gate pylons creates a striking visual effect and wonderfully ties this "weenie" to the Big Hero 6 theme. It's great how a rather simple, bold gesture can make a scene feel totally different from before!

Monsters on Main Street

Paint the Night's second segment after the opening floats, figures, and characters features Monsters Inc. Sully punches away at a control panel as various door portals flash on behind him. It seems a little chaotic, perhaps because a code 2319 has been called. But the doors also glimpse to a variety of fun scenes featuring the various monsters of Monstropolis and even some from far off lands. At the tail of the float is Mike Wazowski, waving to all as he rests next to a pile of scare canisters. It's a singular feature for this beloved Pixar movie, but it's a visually stunning component nevertheless!

Disney Studios' New Adventure

Last weekend, Walt Disney Studios Paris theme park was rechristened Disney Adventure World in a grand ceremony that coincided with the opening of its newest land, the World of Frozen. This marks a deliberate departure from the original movie studio inspiration of the park when it first opened--a version of Walt Disney World's Disney Hollywood Studios built on the cheap--and a broader park built upon the visions of Disney, Pixar, and Marvel. Disney Adventure World expands the park's footprint and signifies a new chapter for a park that has traditionally been regarded as Disney's weakest, giving more attractions (with more on the way), higher quality, and more storytelling. Hopefully, this will bring more traffic and attention to Euro Disney's second gate. So for today, we look back upon the original Frontlot of Walt Disney Studios Paris, with its Hollywood ties now shuffled off to Yesterday.

It's April, and that's another month closer to summer. But in Hawaii, everyday is summer, because Hawaii's tropical locale brings pretty constant warm weather, beautiful sunshine and idyllic settings. Sure, occasional storms and unsettled climate can manifest, but generally speaking, Hawaii well earns its reputation as a paradise. Blue skies, palm trees, lush environments... it's really a hard combination to beat!

Fortress Explorations is Tokyo Disney Sea's version of Tom Sawyer Island on steroids--a large scale exploration area that immerses guests into a Renaissance-era fortification, including its own Age of Exploration sailing ship moored in Mediterranean Harbor. Overlooking the main side of Mediterranean Harbor gives it lovely vistas and an especially escapist feel, and its different approaches all seem to carry scenic compositions and beautiful settings. This angle below, for example, feels incredibly escapist, and its marvelous details are wonderfully immersive. It's just another in countless cases of why this is the "Sea of Dreams."

Here's Bluey (and Bingo)!

Last weekend saw the debut of Bluey's Best Day Ever at Disneyland Park. This marks the official first time that the hit Australian cartoon has made an appearance at a Disney park, and it's a fantastic production that includes a stage show, photo ops, interactive activities, and even themed food items. The most prominent part of this event is the live show at the Fantasyland Theatre, which has been transformed into Bluey's school. There are two different shows that alternate each day, similar to the Fantasyland Faire stage shows, and they heart-warmingly harken to famed moments from the cartoons. At the center of it all are Bluey and her sister Bingo, who show up on stage even before the formal show starts and engage the children eagerly waiting for them in the dance zone.

I'll have more photos of the shows in the future, but here are a few shots of Bluey and Bingo to start things off!

Across the Evening Drawbridge

A few weeks ago, when I was making an increasingly rare nighttime photo run, I was doing so under "Tokyo Disney rules," without tripod, just taking photos by hand. This was natural for on ride photos, since a tripod is frown upon aboard motion vehicles, but it was more challenging for longer, multiple exposures to capture more light from a scene and layer into a composite, balanced photo. Fortunately, a helpful railing and a flip-out screen to help compose the screen assisted greatly. The latter was not an amenity I possessed when I visited the Tokyo Disneyland Resort last, in 2016, but it certainly made framing and holding the camera still easier and from a more comfortable position. I wasn't willing to take my shutter down super slow, so there is still noise in the resulting blend. But it's not bad for something taken without fixed stabilization!

The Sun-Drenched Manor

Mystic Manor's prominent perch on the hill in Mystic Point gives it a striking presence on top of its already eclectic facade, which mixes a variety of architectural style into a most uncanny home with most uncanny artifacts. Lord Henry Mystic's diverse interest in artifacts from around the world clearly influenced the design of his home, and it becomes a representative alternative to the classic Haunted Mansion look in a culture that doesn't as readily embrace ghosts and spirits openly. Instead, it's enchantment and mischief that characterizes this abode and this ride--just a hint of which is indicated on the exterior!

The Open Road

I have plenty of nighttime pictures of Disney parks featuring sweeping, wide views and nary a soul in sight. Those are easy; you just wait out the crowds and all the guests leaving. But catching this during daytime involves either rope dropping and outracing everyone else to a particular scene, or just getting fortuitous timing. I'm not an early morning person, so the shot below was accomplished via the latter method--I just happened to get lucky that no one happened to be ambling through this scene when I took this photo *checks notes* 13 YEARS AGO???

Temple of the Raging Roller Coaster

Tokyo Disney Sea's Raging Spirits is a fun, compact, but exhilarating looping roller coaster tucked in the back of the park, in its Lost River Delta section. Inhabiting jungle ruins, similar to its neighbor, the Indiana Jones and Temple of the Crystal Skull attraction, Raging Spirits takes riders diving and turning, and looping around a dramatic ancient structure, and both the attraction and its queue seem to twist through its exotic setting. Raging Spirits is actually a clone of the Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril roller coaster in Disneyland Paris. But interestingly, this newer, mirrored version is much smoother than its predecessor. And in my opinion, it looks more photogenic too!

March of the Paint the Night Fairies

A couple of weekends ago, I took a nighttime photo run to the Disneyland Resort to catch the Paint the Night parade for the first time since its return this year (after a hiatus last holiday season in the middle of Disneyland's 70th Anniversary celebration). This is still my favorite Disney parade and an all-time, classic. And it's fun to photograph both the spectacular parade floats and the great performers between the floats, from the Disney characters to the dancers. Everything starts off with the opening segment, however, which sees Tinker Bell and Peter Pan preceded by Tink's fairy friends, Silvermist, Rosetta, and Iridessa. They set the tone for the magic that will follow, shimmering in nighttime color and luminescence. It is a beautiful start to a magnificent parade--one that I'll be sad to see leave when this 70th Anniversary celebration concludes later this year!

Paris' Main Street Collection

Today's post entails editing my remaining unedited landscape orientation Main Street, U.S.A. photos from Disneyland Paris from my 2014 visit. Yes, that's a very specific set of criteria--compounded by the thought that it's been nearly a dozen years since that vacation. Plenty of life events have happened in that time, but one thing that hasn't changed is how beautiful the park is, and what an excellent atmosphere it provides. It's old fashioned Victorian charm, extra enhanced because the park is located in Europe and has real life examples to compete against, so it has to be even more fantastical. Fortunately, Paris' Magic Kingdom rises to the challenge.

Blooms A'Fleeting

So I haven't been over to Disneyland in a hot minute, and during that time, this year's spring blooms came and mostly went. I was able to catch some small vestiges of the blossoms last Friday evening during a late night photo run, but by that point, the trees that still had pink blooms were already in the process of shedding them, while the other trees no longer pink had already filled in with the green leaves that will remain for the rest of the year. Still, it was nice to see a little bit of these signs of spring, even though they're fading away before spring has actually sprung. It's still a refreshing atmosphere as we start picking up momentum through the seasons after the winter duldrums.

Valley of the Hawaiian Isle

Normally, I don't start posting photos from Aulani until closer to the summer, but the past couple of weeks has brought warmer than normal temperatures through Southern California and made it feel like it's summer already, even though we're still technically in winter! As long as we're feeling the heat, might as well think about the tropical paradise that one could escape to during the hot summer days. Disney's Aulani Resort is spectacular placemaking. Though it has no theme park components technically, it is immersive and scenic just like Disney's theme parks around the world. Only this property celebrates its Hawaiian home with architecture, landscaping, entertainment, art, and respect that is clearly inspired by the local island culture and history. And the result is something that is idyllic and gorgeous!

The Arabian Courtyard II

The further I get from my last visit to the Tokyo Disney Resort, nearly ten years ago, the less broad, sweeping, wide angle clean park shots I have that haven't already been posted. This is especially true of lands that are not Mediterranean Harbor and American Waterfront, as my collection of photos in the remaining seven ports of call from when I visited is much less bountiful. But it's also a testamant to how many photos I took period that I'm still able to include photos from Tokyo Disney Sea in my posts. And on occasion, I am able to dig up an unedited ambiance shot to refine and share and give readers a sense of the magical atmosphere that this park pervades throughout its exceedingly detailed footprint. Here is a scene from the Arabian Coast, featuring one of the few areas here that open up into something more sprawling. Two photogenic subjects feature here--the Magic Lamp Theater and the Caravan Carousel. And they both make for a lovely evening environment!

The Fair Evening Faire

It doesn't seem like that long ago to me, but it was 13 years and 4 days ago that Fantasy Faire debuted as an extension of Fantasyland, replacing the area around the old Carnation Plaza Gardens. With a covered entertainment space, moving mini-scenes, and its own princess meet-and-greet area, it provided a nice place to fit extra capacity for Disneyland guests--not to mention more place-making. It's nicely ingratiated itself into the Disneyland park fabric over the past decade+. My only disappointment is that the Saturday evening swing dancing that was retained from the Carnation Plaza Gardens was eventually shuttered away. But it's still a beautiful atmosphere and a lovely scene to photograph!

Flying Over London II

Ten years ago, I posted some photos taken from Peter Pan's Flight featuring the emergence out from the Darling house and out over the city of London. As a child, I still remember the wonder and amazement I felt at this moment, truly flying out over the city and experience that thrill and wonder of such as beautiful scene. As an adult, I still love the way this classic attraction does its reveal, and the nostalgia still holds this ride dear. On Friday, I decided to ride it once more to test out how dark ride photography would work on my new mirrorless camera, since the new technology seems to do much better focusing in the dark. While the results of my first dark ride photography attempt weren't pristine (Peter Pan's Flight is also a more challenging attraction on account of it's relatively swift speed for a dark ride, ride vehicle obstructions, and different angles of scene arrivals), I was overall pretty pleased with how well the camera focused on the scenes and captured these moments that are well embedded in my Disneyland core memories. First over London, and then next to the second star to the right!

Grotto of Color

Last night, I was making a rare-these-days late night Disneyland photo run when I decided to swing by Snow White's Grotto, to the right of Sleeping Beauty Castle, to see if I could capture the scene sans tripod. With my recently purchased first mirrorless camera, I was curious to see if I could shoot hand-stabilized semi-long exposures that could still be somewhat crisp and capture multiple exposures to blend into luminous scene.

Well, first trial run with my Nikon Z8 of photographing by Tokyo Disney rules seemed successful. I was able to capture three frames of different brightness and combine them together into something that feels a bit sumptuous. Granted, catching Snow White's Grotto during one of its mini-show moments helped--the colorful theatrical lighting lent the scene a vibrant flare. But I also think back to how I might have done doing handheld nighttime shots a decade ago, and I don't think I would have captured this scene as evocatively. That's the fun part of continuing to hone practice as a photographer. I can always revisit things and try shots again with new hardware and better abilities!

Splish Splash Around Mickey & Minnie

I think it's been a little while since I've posted something from Mickey's Toontown in Disneyland California. This neighborhood of Mickey Mouse and his pals was Disneyland's previous themed land expansion prior to Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. And a few years ago, it received a much-needed renovation and redevelopment that brought in the El CapiTOON Theater and the excellent Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway. In front of this is a new fountain featuring Mickey and Minnie frozen in that iconic "Dirty Dancing lift" pose. And around the are all sorts of lovely, whimsical, little details full of color and ways to spray out water. Though the fountain theming elements are static, they feel dynamic in the aquatic play of the fountainworks, and these little details help make for a delightful little gathering monument in front of Toontown's latest, fantastic addition!

America to the Mediterranean

The first time I visited Tokyo Disney Sea, I was blown away by the expansive vistas all around the Mediterranean Harbor themed port of call. This bountiful lagoon at the front of the park provided a beautiful body of water and coastline that allowed guests to take in the glamor of the Italian Riviera and catch glimpses of industrial Americana (and also a freaking volcano, though that's not the subject of today's post). Scenes like this made the park feel unreal and transportive. This was not a theme park--it was an escape into a faraway travel dream. Add to that a lovely afternoon sun, marvelous blue skies, and the lavish skyline, and it was easy to see why this park was nicknamed the Sea of Dreams!

Hurtling Through Nature's Wonderland

I've had this roll of on-ride photos taken from Disneyland Paris' Big Thunder Mountain Railroad saved on my computer for years but have never edited them until now, when I stumbled upon them while looking for a scene from Disney's most beautiful Magic Kingdom park to post. Disneyland Paris is a personal favorite, because it has the best versions of several of Disney's classic recurring attractions. Phantom Manor is the best Haunted Mansion. Their Pirates of the Caribbean is the best of the classic versions in my opinion. They have the best and most storybook castle. And their Big Thunder Mountain is an majestic and thrilling adrenaline rush that has a unique setting and a heart-pumping layout that twists and turns and roars through this American Southwest-inspired wilderness. It's a super fun ride, and an incredibly photogenic one as well! Who knew the wildest ride in France's wilderness was so close to the city!

A Buena Bloom

Spring is a beautifully vibrant time of the year at the Disneyland Resort, as the tabebuia trees bloom, the Food & Wine Festival delights gourmet tastebuds, and the days start getting a little longer and warmer. This is ripe for scenes of rebirth and renewal... of vibrance and warmth. They beckon sunshine to come and the approach toward the connotation of relaxation that is summer. As we move out of the dreary cold of winter (or at least what passes for winter in Southern California--which lately has been pretty warm and vibrant already), it's nice to enjoy the spring colors and atmosphere, especially at the parks!

Midnight Outside the Marsh

Tiana's Bayou Adventure increases the lush factor at the former Splash Mountain attraction, re-Imagineering Chick-A-Pin Hill into a verdant, swampy, heavily vegetated landscape that embodies the marshy ambiance of much of its inspirational The Princess and the Frog movie. It looks nice during the daytime, but it really comes alive at night, when the moody lighting enhances the atmosphere and creates something warm and exotic and mysterious at the same time. Now, this log ride, much like its predecessor, is not a popular destination at night, but it's sure pretty to behold!
