From Ornament Valley to Radiator Springs

The geography of Cars Land is wide-ranging and vivid. From the open west expanses of Ornament Valley to the mid-century charm of Radiator Springs, there is beauty everywhere throughout this Cars-themed area. When it opened 14 years ago at Disney California Adventure, it ushered a whole new era of immersion and detail, giving Disneyland's humble sister park a bit of the grandeur that the other new Disney park of 2001--Tokyo Disney Sea--had. The rockwork, landscape, and architecture of Cars Land is exquisite and enriching, and walking through this area always brings a gleam and a sense of wonder to my photographic eye!

An Escape from the Crowds

Disneyland is full of moments big and small, and the busiest parts of the park can also exist next to less frequented nooks just off the beaten trails. Snow White's Grotto is an example of an area that is in plain site, yet is often less crowded than the main pathway through the drawbridge of Sleeping Beauty's Castle. Here, guests can have a moment of serenity, take in the Snow White and Seven Dwarfs sculpltures, throw a coin in Snow White's Wishing Well, and enjoy the general tranquil ambiance. It's a lovely little moment of escape from the hustle and bustle of the park--even more so at night!

Dusk on the Tropical Waters

Summer break is upon us, and that means vacation time many across the country. With school out, children's schedules are more flexible, and that means being able to travel. For many families, that means a trip to the tropical paradise of Hawaii. And for Disney fans, that might mean stopping by the beautiful Aulani Resort, where the beauty and ambiance is heightened with that lovely Disney magic. The architecture, landscape, and interiors are full of storytelling and spirit, and it's always a wondrous time at this island escape among escapes!

The Medley of San Fransokyo

The eclectic ambiance of San Fransokyo Square is a lovely setting for the diversity of cuisines found in this dining-centric themed land in Disney California Adventure. With restaurants featuring Asian, Mexican, and American flavors, this area is a visual and culinary hybrid of styles and inspirations. Aesthetically, the world of Big Hero 6 ties everything together, but this area really is a celebration of the variety of tastes found here. And the still relatively recent transformation from Pacific Wharf to San Fransokyo Square offers some beautiful and vibrant scenes from many angles! Here are a few taken from a familiar vantage point.

Succulents by the Zocalo

Frontierland is not necessarily thought of for its greenery, since it represents the arid Old West and the rocky buttes of the American landscape. But the desert setting does have its own verdant beauty, and that's represented lushly at the Rancho del Zocalo, where succulents and cacti and other desert flowering provide a beautiful greenery that contrasts vibrantly against the Southwest architecture of this nook of the land. The succulent planter in the foreground of the entry lane of the restaurant is especially picturesque, and in the afternoon golden hour light, the scene looks especially dashing!

Thar She Blows!

When Grizzly River Run first opened as part of Disney California Adventure's original line-up, it included an extra soaking surprise after its climactic spinning drop. If the splashdown didn't get riders wet, an unexpected geyser around the riverbend could! This geyser didn't always go out, and many a river raft rider might float by unscathed. But when the jet of water did erupt--right under the river course itself--it typically spouted a deluge right onto adventurers. As the ride aged, the geyser effect seemed to go away, at least in my memory. But fortunately, after a refurbishment last year, the geyser returned, and it is still offering a splash-tacular surprise to guests who squeal in dread and glee as they see the impending shower. It's nice to have that feature a part of the ride again, especially with the hot summer months upon us!

Disney's Golden Goodness

My Memorial Day Disneyland photo run was a fruitful trip of a few hours that offered some excellent lighting to capture nostalgic feeling shots of the park in that lovely, late afternoon glow that bathes the magical atmosphere in cozy, nostalgic light before Walt Disney's original Magic Kingdom transforms into the magic of Disneyland after dark. I love this ambiance, just soaking in the end of another beautiful Southern California day. And especially on the west side of the park, where the setting sun casts its golden light, the already beautiful environ of the park becomes even more marvelous!

Jumpin' Some Colorful Jellies

When I was doing a Disney photo run last month during a comfy spring afternoon, I realized that I had not photographed the colorful hues of the Jumping Jellyfish in quite some time. With their saturation and contrast, they offer fantastic angles against the golden sun and the azure sky. In the afternoon light, with the sun behind them, they almost glow with vivid luminescence. The glossy fiberglass shades make them look like artful glass sculptures, and they offer a lovely touch of classic Disney California Adventure!

The Thunderbird

Disney Imagineers have long used the practice of forced perspective to make theming and architecture look bigger and grander than in physical dimensions. By building upper floors at increasingly smaller scales or shaping features that are supposed to appear farther in smaller segments, this enhances the illusion that things are larger and more epic. Except when real life nature decides to interfere, like the bird on the spire of the Big Thunder Mountain rockwork on the left in the photo below. At that point, the illusion is compromised, because there's something to compare for scale! Ah well, you can't control everything!

Docked and Loading

The Rivers of America have been an indelible part of Disneyland since the very beginning, and cruising along these waterways are the Mark Twain and S.S. Columbia, which take thousands of passengers just around the riverbend and beyond every day. But when the evening starts winding in, they retire to start their transformation for the nighttime spectacular, FANTASMIC! The Columbia switches up its docking place, from Frontier Landing to a small platform just off Tom Sawyer Island. It's a nice photo op to catch the vessel in the afternoon golden hour light, in preparation for the magic that it will help showcase after dark!

Arches to Aloha

The sense of procession is strong at the Aulani Resort and Spa, in Ko Olina, Oahu, Hawaii. Numerous paths wind and converge, offering glimpses and anticipation of what lies beyond. Even the approach to the entrance is dramatic, having guests come up a curving pathway, enter through the porte cochere, and come upon the soaring lobby. Operable partitions open to the Waikolohe Valley beyond, opening up to the majestic grandeur of the outdoor tropical landscape. It's all a thoughtfully orchestrated sequence that infuses Disney design and Hawaiian spirit, and it's part of the memorable experiences that guests can have at this slice of Disney paradise!

Ornament Valley's Desert Landscape

Out beyond the outskirts of Radiator Springs lies a beautiful landscape of sandstone rocks and desert flora. Greenery and vibrance exist through cacti and succulents and the plants thrive in the Southern California climate. It's easy to lose sight of the landscape when there's so much majesty and beauty all around, but if you focus on the ground, you can find a lot of lovely moments that showcase the wonder of this arid land!

A Sunny Day Over the Briar Patch

Splash Mountain may have evolved into Tiana's Bayou Adventure in the United States, but if Disney fans want to still see this attraction in operation, head onto Tokyo Disneyland, where the iconic log flume attraction lives on in that parks' Critter Country land. Brer Bear, Brer Fox, and Brer Rabbit continue their adventures and jaunts to the Laughing Place, and the recognizable outline of Chick-A-Pin Hill lives on. You can get into reasons for why this ride persists in Japan but not America--mainly the difference in the historical and cultural context of The Song of the South in America compared to Japan, where slavery, post slavery, and Civil Rights struggles did not occur--but regardless, Japan is where Splash Mountain lives on. Bluey's Parade of Friends

Bluey's Best Day ever features two, alternating stage shows featuring Bluey, Bingo, and some of their best friends from the popular Australian children's television program. But the one that features the Grannies is my favorite--not only for that aforementioned segment, but also the grand finale, which features an inflatables parade of Blue and Bingo's friends from school and from town. Marching (or floating) in to triumphal music, Indy, Mackenzie, Rusty, Honey, Jack, and friends celebrate this best day ever with a fun and uplifting closing segment that leaves kids in wonder and adults with their hearts filled. Keeping in tune with the wholesome nature of the show, this finale ends on an emotional lift, leaving everyone to proclaim, "Hooray!"

Glimpses of the Maka'ala

Aulani's entrance lobby structure is a wonderful space from inside and out. But I most love the angles of the shapely and distinctive outline of the hotel entrance from the Waikolohe Valley courtyard side of the property, which offers great glimpses framed by tropical vegetation to impart a sense of discovery and organic tropical nestled placement for the hotel. From some views, the Maka'ala almost looks like an ancient temple that has grown with the surrounding rainforest. Of course, we know that's not the case because of the overall environment. But it's fun to capture an imaginative visual story through photographic composition!

Sanctum Serenity

When Avengers Campus first opened, one of the entertainment highlights was the Doctor Strange: Mysteries of the Mystic Arts stage show, which featured an inter-dimensional encounter with the powerful Marvel sorcerer. This was a popular show, but for never-completely-satisfactorily-explained reasons, it closed two years ago. Though Dr. Stephen Strange does still make appearances here, the grounds are quieter nowadays, on account of the absence of this entertainment offering. They're not as quiet as this after hours picture of the mystical courtyard, but they're not quite the bustle that they once were.

A Vivid Victorian View

From the first moment I ever saw a photo of it in a Walt Disney Imagineering book, I've always loved the elegant, majestic facade of the Disneyland Paris entrance, beautifully integrated with the Disneyland Paris Hotel that comprises the entrance elevation and striking, guest-greeting vista. The lovely Victorian architecture, the friendly light pastel pinks, the water feature in front of the entrance, and the Mickey Mouse florals make for a gorgeously scenic view. Suffice to say that once I finally was able to visit Disney's most beautiful Magic Kingdom, I spent a good amount of time capturing the same views!

Blue Hour on American Waterfront

Every once in a while, I uncover a photo in my extensive Disney theme park photo repository that makes me question why I didn't share it sooner. The photo below is a great example. Taken from an elevated perspective on the S.S. Columbia in the American Waterfront section of the majestic Tokyo Disney Sea, this early evening panorama shows a good portion of the park beginning to settle into its evening glow. The holiday season enhances the twilight radiance, juxtaposing the warm lights against the darkening blue sky. With watery reflections, a mix of seacraft and distant architecture, and a towering volcano in the background, this scene screams quintessential Disney Sea. I'm perplexed I haven't posted this photo before! (Though I have posted a very similar one.)

Aloha in the Ambiance

My favorite photos from Disney's Aulani Resort and Spa are the ones that capture the vibrant glow of the tropical ambiance, bringing the blue skies and lush greenery to luminous beauty and really enhancing that sentiment of an island paradise. With the sun setting, the puffy clouds, and the verdant atmosphere, photos like these really take me back to those vacations exploring the beauty of Hawaii and Disney's magnificent tribute to it. So until the next time I'm able to visit, these visual souvenirs will suffice nicely.

Under the Sea on Main Street

Paint the Night features plenty of dazzling floats from some of Disney's most beloved and famed animated classics, including a calypso of color in The Little Mermaid. Preceded by dancers dressed as glowing choral, the float itself features Ariel enjoying life under the sea with his friends, Flounder and Sebastian, and King Triton carrying his mighty trident. Spinning jellyfish and Nemo and Marlin carry on the aquatic theme. It's a spectacular underwater scene, shining and shimmering, transforming the Disneyland parade route into a ocean wonderland. Or is it wondersea?

California Daydreaming Back

Today's photo digs back into the inner recesses of my Disneyland photos... that were shot in RAW format. It was not long after I started this blog nearly 14 years ago that I stopped photographing in JPEG and switched to RAW to allow more flexibility and adaptability when editing photos. It marked a more serious shift in my hobbyist photography, and I've enjoyed capturing countless scenic moments ever since.

This perspective is also nostalgic, because it represents Disney California Adventure before its more overt IP-fication that started when the park relaunched its "DCA 2.0" self with a whole land dedicated to an intellectual property--Cars--and continued with the later conversions of Paradise Pier into Pixar Pier, Pacific Wharf into San Fransokyo Square, and the introduction of Avengers Campus. Instead, back then, most of DCA's themed lands were homages to parts of Californial. Paradise Pier? A tribute to the heyday of seaside amusement parks and piers during the mid-20th century. And though the franchise-based attractions that have been added to or converted at California Adventure certainly have proven to be popular, there's something wistful about the original inspiration of the park.

The Resort on the Beach

Rising up along the Ko Olina coast, Disney's Aulani Hotel is a tropical paradise of a resort, steeped in deep Hawaiian history and culture, drawing inspiration from the island's vernacular architecture, and set within an island Eden that enhances the already gorgeous environment all around. There are different ways the hotel can be glimpsed, both from afar and up close, but I like this view through the palm trees, almost as though one is happening upon this impressive and scenic view. It might be a towering hotel, but it's almost as though Aulani is exclaiming, "Oh, look, you've found me!"

The Landscape by the Sea

Long before Universal's Epic Universe opened, Tokyo Disney Sea defined what it means for a theme park to be epic. Expansive ports of call, creative themes, thematic hyper realism, and a collection of fantastic attractions quickly put the park in competition for the best in the world, and even if people didn't think TDS was number one, most agreed it was the most beautiful. The grandeur stems from how every facet of the park exudes escapism on a fantastic, magnificent scale. Where else can you see a life size volcano spewing smoke and fire, just to make a park icon type of statement? Or a Renaissance fortress sprawling along an exotic waterfront? That doesn't even get into an Arabian oasis, a hidden jungle, a sea port of tomorrow, America across several eras, and an undersea dreamscape? And just last year, Tokyo Disney Sea expanded into its 8th theme port of call, the equivalent of the park's Fantasyland, bringing even more dazzling sights and rides.

Indeed, this is the definition of epic. And it's easy to see why this theme park was branded as the Sea of Dreams!

Fairy Tale Ice Cream

My 2014 trip to Disneyland Paris may have happened nearly a dozen years ago, but the beautiful photographic conditions of that trip are still paying dividends through a still fruitful repository of unedited photos capturing golden hour bliss through the most fantastical of Disney Magic Kingdoms. The lighting when I was exploring Fantasyland was particularly glowing, and even simple photos of quick serve snack stands looked lovely and uplifting thanks to the pastel colors and golden daylight. The quieter than expected corners of the park also offered scenes that felt more personal, getting away from the busy bustle that most people associate with Disney parks. It all added up to a dream of a visit, with photos that retain a similar feel!

Blue Hour on the Lazy River

Disney's Aulani Resort & Spa is a spectacular, immersive property that takes its already spectacular Hawaiian setting and amplifies the atmosphere and theming even further. The hotel's visual and thematic storytelling weave authentic Hawaiian culture and history into its architecture, artwork, theming elements, paintings, and even soundscape. This is not the only instance of Disney taking a local setting as a theme for its property--Disney California Adventure was originally wholly a celebration of California while being located in California, while the Ratatouille mini-land brings Paris to life outside of Paris. But there's something epic about the way Aulani does it!

While the lazy river of the Waikolohe Stream is closed in the evening hours, its illuminated waterways make for a beautiful blue hour atmosphere at the Aulani Resort!
