Campo Grafico 1933–1939
From the Pagina series, this is a superb, historical account of the legendary, avant-garde Italian printing and typography journal, published in 66 issues from 1933-39. Profusely illustrated with more than 150 examples of the journals covers and inside spreads.in both black/white and some color. With an introduction by the journal's first editor, Attilio Rossi. Highly recommended!

Wim Crouwel: Aspects of Communication Design in a Shrinking World

Edited version of an original lecture by Wim Crouwel under the theme Aspects of Communication Design in a Shrinking World from Vision 65: World Congress on New Challenges to Human Conditions, October 23, 1965, 9:30am.

I have been asked to give an estimate of the designer's position in Europe, as it relates to certain questions and prospects: What is his attitude towards the problems which a shrinking world imposes on the sphere of communication? What are his reactions to it, and is he happy about present-day developments? Is he equipped to adapt himself to the situation, or is negative criticism his only response?

A new method, called visual communication—a term which is so fashionable at the moment that it is already threatening to grow into a problem—is replacing earlier concepts and trends. It deals with the transmission of a message by visual means, and with concrete presentations of complex ideas. It embraces many aspects of design, such as typography, book design, advertisement, film, exhibitions, etc.

Although his income is modest compared to that of his American counterpart, the graphic designer in Europe is making a comfortable living today according to European standards. And yet I would say that his present position is not enviable. In the first place, he is inhibited by the weight of an enormous historical ballast.

Kieler Woche, Hans Hillmann
Beginning in 1950, the Kieler Woche (regatta or sailing event) annual poster competition is Europe's most prestigious. Each year, a selected, expert committee personally invites five German and/or European designers or practices to participate and submit no more than three entries. The winning results of this rich tradition reads like a who's who of graphic design.

“The posters from the 1960s are some of the best material that national and international design produced at that time.” (Müller, Jens and Weiland, Karen)

“This design is the one most highly thought of by the expert consultants. It represents a most powerful reduction to the essential. It makes quiet, intense impact, without neglecting the quality of a poster – a progressive, pioneering solution.” – Excerpts from Jury Notes (Müller and Weiland. Kieler Woche, History of a Design Contest. Lars Müller. 2010.)

96 total issues (some with original recipient mailing labels and subscription cards) from Vol. 1, No. 1 (first issue, 1974) to Vol. 25, No. 3, 1998. U&lc was a defining voice in world graphic design between 1973 and 1999. It was in some ways a lifestyle magazine for the design community - providing a fascinating intersection of american popular culture and graphic design in the last quarter of the 20th century. A unique opportunity to own a complete set.
American Standard Plumbing Fixtures
Rare. A remarkable, specialized catalog designed by Ladislav Sutnar to simplify the selection of plumbing fixtures (baths, lavatories, water closets, urinals, etc). Sutnar's design organizes products in a logical and functional sequence. His use of an identification system, section dividers and "visual units" (pairs of facing pages designed to be self-contained) make it easy to find products and promote quick product comparison. This sophisticated visual presentation helped set new standards in catalog design and is an important historical item. Highly recommended.

Good Design is Good Will
More than 25 years later, Mr. Rand's ideas and convictions still stand true and should be revisited frequently by students and professionals ... “A company's reputation is very much affected by how it looks and how its products work. A beautiful object that doesn't work is a reflection on the company's integrity. In the long run, it may lose not only its customers but its good will. Good design will no longer function as the harbinger of good business but as the herald of hypocrisy. Beauty is a by-product of needs and functions.”
