Creation Build)

Build
Reason: I have a mixed use case and wanted an updated Windows computer
for gaming and media creation. I play mainly first person shooters such
as PUBG, Overwatch, Call of Duty, Apex. I am a medium to low skill player but
have been gaming almost my entire life. For medium creation I consider
myself a prosumer photographer and videographer. I like to work with Adobe
Lightroom Classic, Davinci Resolve, Adobe Premier, OBS, and ON1 Photo Raw
software packages. I have a Sony A7R3, Canon 5d3, and several GoPros that
produce large 4k video files and images.

I have
other content about this build on my youtube channel. Please check it
out, like, and subscribe.

Intel
doesn’t seem to be getting it done in 2019 and while the 9900k looked good
for gaming I wanted to try something better for media creation. The
additional cores on the AMD chip just seem like it would be better for
  Lightroom and Davinci.

Very happy with this CPU and it is performing very
  well. Extremely easy to install.

I wanted
3 NVME slots, no fan built into the motherboard, at least 3 sata ports, and a
built in 10 GbE network port. I wanted a standard size ATX or
reluctantly an extended ATX, which is what this one is.

No
problems with the motherboard and it booted the first time.

The BIOS
is easy to access and use.

I really
would have preferred that the size was ATX rather than eATX. The larger
size made my case very tight.

10GbE
port seems to be more stable than a former Intel add in card I was using in a
  past computer.

Happy
with the purchase. Gigabyte software looks old and clunky and keeps
trying to push 3rd party app installs on me when I need to update drivers.

The
extra 4 pin fan connections on the board ended up helping later on in the
build due to some hard drive cooling issues.

-I like
  the looks of the case

-It had
  modern USB connectivity on top.

-It had
slots for 3 hard drives (3.5)

-I was
of medium size and smaller than my former Corsair Graphite 600t case.

-I
generally have liked the Corsair brand.

Looks
won over functionality with this case. Corsair claims that 3 hard
drives and 3 SSDs can run in this case, which is grossly wrong. They
can all physically fit in the case, but the spacing between the 3 hard drives
is to small for airflow and this side of the case does not have any fans to
cool them. The hard drives all end up overheating which for me was
causing performance issues. This will also cause reduced hard drive life
span. I am very disappointed with Corsair on this issue.

If you
have this issue you can remove the middle hard drive from the cage and lay it
vertically in the case unmounted. While this visually doesn’t look
great it reduced the heat significantly. The hard drive still functions
  normally.

I also
added a small Noctua fan to this side of the case this didn’t look impactful
  enough to the temperature.

Issue
#2: 360mm coolers have to be mounted in the front of the case rather
than on top. I knew this part before I bought it, but what I didn’t
know is that if you have a long graphics card, such as my 2080ti, then the 2
items will not fit in the case. They should have clarified this a bit
more on their website. I had to return a Corsair 150i cooler and get a H115i.
The smaller cooler is working just fine. I now don’t believe 360mm cooles are
  worth it.

Other
issues: The rubber O ring ? pieces that are used for the holes between
the case compartments were quick to fall off and difficult to put back on.

The iCue
software looks comprehensive but is difficult to use. My RGB lights
seem to be always running. I can set a red profile, but when my computer
locks and sets idle it goes back to a rainbow display. I would like no
  color on lock.

In
general I do like how the case looks, the glass door and top is nice.
Everything is mostly stable for now, but I am concerned that since I had to
add the extra fans the desktop might be louder than I wanted. As I type
this the PC sound is 48 decibels with my phone laying on the top of the case.

Had I
knew I was going to run into the above issues I would have strongly looked at
other cases and perhaps compromised on my size requirements and gone with a
  bigger case.

wanted a high speed boot drive along with a gaming/cache drive.

wanted to use the Gen 4 technology available with the AMD CPU and

I had
this already. I wanted a 4k monitor. This is more of a utility
monitor for tools, apps while gaming, etc. I have not had any issues
with it, but my past experience with LG has been very poor.

It could
  use more connectivity options.

My old
keyboard was falling apart and I wanted to try wireless again. I bought
a logitech lightspeed mouse for gaming and was very happy with it so I wanted
  to try their keyboard.

I
generally like a gaming keyboard, dedicated media controls, and keys that
have some response to them when activated.

I am
very happy with this keyboard and I have been using it for several weeks
(typing now on it). This version is way too expensive for a keyboard
and I have a little bit of a foolish feeling for buying such an expensive
keyboard. That being said it is working well. I am not experiencing any
lag in Call of Duty, Overwatch etc.

This is
a full size keyboard but the keys seem slightly smaller or closer together,
but I got use to that.

This
clicky version is very noisy. I would have liked to try the 3 different
versions in a store but that was not an option.

The
wireless works as expected, and so far I don’t have to fiddle with
  connectivity. “It just works.”

I would
have like a USB port built into the keyboard for my fingerprint reader.

I had it
already. I like a medium size mouse with minimalist buttons on the left
side. More buttons are not always better especially in gaming.

I had
these already. If you are into gaming on PC you need headphones.
They make a difference in hearing footsteps.

When I
bought these I did significant research on headphones for gaming. I
wanted something that had surround sound, wireless, 50mm drivers, and was
  comfortable

Happy
with these. I think the customizable buttons are useless on any
headphones. I wish the batteries would last longer and the battery
  compartment can accidentally easily open.

I was
having cooling issues with the hard drives so I bought a bunch of fans.
Noctua has a great product. I replaced a 120mm case fan with this 140mm
  fan.

This fan
is insanely loud at speed. Don’t buy it for your main case fans.
I am reducing the speed in my bios. They work great but I should not have got
  the “heavy duty series”

I was
having cooling issues with the hard drives so I bought a bunch of fans.
Noctua has a great product. I added 2 140mm fans at the bottom of the
  case.

I should
have only bought one but it would have looked odd. The fans are very
much cooling the GPU and CPU but they are contributing to noise. The
CPU_Opt fan header on my board was not able to control the speed of one of
these fans so it was running full speed all the time, which was
defaning. I had to disable it for now. I would suggest not buying the
heavy duty series for consumer PCs

I was
having cooling issues with the hard drives so I bought a small fan to add
  close to the hard drives.

There
wasn’t any clear place to mount the fan so I have it dangling on this side of
the case. It is really just circulating the case air. On install it
didn’t noticeably lower the temperature of the hard drives. I may
disconnect it or try it again on the back grid of the case with an extension
  cable.

Moving
the middle hard drive seem to have the biggest temperature
  impact.

I recently purchased a new Asus motherboard for my new ivy bridge setup and I've discovered that the on board intel gigabit port is highly sensitive. The problem was that I was only getting 100 Mbps when I should have been getting a 1000 Mbps or 1 Gigabit.

Ultimately it turned to be that my previously used network cord was not sufficient. I plugged in a Cat 6 version and the network speed then registered correctly.

Debug steps if you are in a similar position:

1) Make sure all drivers are update to date.
2) Start and stop the network connection and make sure all the IP address are what you are expecting.
3) Try different cords including one stamped as Cat 6 or gigabit network ready.
4) Make sure all of your connecting hubs, switch, etc all support gigabit network.

I captured this video during a power outage. The power had just gone off and remained off for about 2 hours. I have 2 Synology NAS devices that store all my data. I wanted to see if the settings I configured on the NAS and UPS worked as planned. Everything did work and I did not lose any data.

The NAS devices are plugged into the back of the Cyberpower UPS through the electrical plug in as well as a USB cord to link the devices. Through USB the NAS instructed the UPS to shut down after the drives went into safe mode. I had the drives remain active 60 seconds after the power outage and then shut down safely. Everything worked as planned.

My latest Media Server Build:

-Requirements:
1) Simple..Simple Simple
2) I don't want to waste weekends managing it when it crashes.
3) The wife needs to "understand it".
4) It needs to turn on fast due to the kids and be stable.

Here is what I've done:
1) Synology 1511+ NAS unit with 5 X 2TB drives (very awesome, and easily managed)
2) Movies, Audio, Pictures on the NAS.
3) Windows 7, Windows Media Center.. Recorded TV on a local drive.
4) Mapped drive from Win 7 to NAS
5) Apple TV 2
6) Ipad 2 and iPhones
7) Use Airplay on the Apple device (they most awesome feature).
8) Purchase Air Media iPhone($1 to $2), but worth $50.
9) Run the free Air Media server on the windows 7 machine.
10) Air Media application can read all kinds of files and convert on the fly.

Next steps in the project: Depend less on the Win 7 machine and use more delivered functionality in the NAS.

Out of the box the software installed and I was able to view the video using the delivered software.

Problem #1: The microphone driver didn't get installed appropriately. In the Logitech software the microphone of "HD Pro Webcam C910" was not listed as part of the drop down mic choice. No sound was recorded from the new web camera.

Going into the Windows 7 | control panel | Device Manager | Sound, Video, and game controller, all I had was an "unidentified device" published by Logitech. This said that the driver could not be found. Hunting for the driver under this functionality finds the Logitech software, but then errors out saying the software is already installed.

Resolution: Through the control panel | Programs and Features | remove all software that is provided by Logitech for web cams. I had 3 sets of Logitech software to uninstall. Previous 2009 Logitech drivers and today's new web cam software. Uninstall all of that and reboot each time it asks you to. Then double check that the unidentified device in the device manager is gone. If not delete it. Reboot and then from the delivered CD re install the C910 software. Don't plug in the web camera until it tells you to do so. Reboot every time it tells you. Once stable check for updates and then install those. Likely reboot again. This time the mic driver should now be present in the quick capture Logitech software. This worked for me.

Other tips: 1) Make sure the camera is plugged directly into a USB port on your computer. Not a USB hub. 2) Unplug unnecessary devices for the time being such as other web cameras. 3) If you upgrading from a past Logitech camera. Unplug it, and uninstall all of the driver software first then follow the above directions.

Problem # 2: When I went into quick capture to record a video the software acted as if a video was recording but the record "red" icon never shows up and it records nothing. I had this problem on the c9000 as well.

Resolution: Start the Logitech Web Camera software while in administrator mode. Right click on the run icon and hit "run as administrator". To permanently make this change right click on the icon and go to properties | short cut | advanced | check mark "run as administrator".

Very inconvenient and several hours lost, but problem solved.

My system specs:
Camera model: Logitech HD Pro Webcam C910
Software Version: 13.25.1016.0

CPU  = Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU           @ 2.66GHz

RAM = 8.00 GB

Microsoft Windows 7 Professional

Service Pack Version:1

Most amazing / must have applications, best of the best:

FlickStackr - If you love photos and use Flickr, this application is better than the actual Flickr website. Its a minimal fee in the app store, but it it very worth it.

Air Video - This app allows me to watch movies and tv that I have on different computers in my house. My video's I've burnt, even Windows Media Center files. Again amazing app.

Zite - A news and article consolidator. Love it.

Denon Remote App - If you have a Denon stereo you can control everything from this. Check if there is an app for your brand.

Netflix - self explanatory if you are a Netflix subscriber. "It just works"

Echofon - If you are on Twitter I find this application very helpful in managing multiple accounts.

The Economist- I consider this magazine application the benchmark that all other magazines apps should strive to be.

USA Today - Simple, nice looking, newspaper app.

Magazines - I think magazines in general are the killer app for iPads. Simple, no tree killing, have severall magazines all on your device.. easy to travel with.

PhotoSync - Awesome app for wirelessly downloading your photos and videos from your ipad or iPhone. It works better than any tool provided by Apple.

Other good stuff:

Mail - Yes this is the standard email program with the iPad. I'm a big fan of simplicity and design.

Youtube - Combine this app with Airplay and an apple tv and its pure awesomeness.

Google Search - "It just works"

Evernote - Simple note and image cloud service for all of your devices.

Imo.im - Instant message program for all of your accounts.

Instagram - Photography app. Its just fun and I love how it connects and shares to all my other accounts.

Tumblr - Simple picture / /video blog. Day in the life content. Again simple to share to. Fun to browse other popular photos.

Books - Yep just the standard book program from Apple. I use to read a number of PDF product manuals.

Amazon.com - If your looking to buy something this is pretty simple. Plus I like using the "wish list" feature as I can do some fairly frequent price checking.

Dropbox - Good for sharing files with other computers, such as product manuals.

iNet - Scans my network, helps with triaging computer issues.

Pandora - LIsten to you channel of music.

Gararge Band - I have no musical skills but I've had lots of fun with this app.

iMovie - When you first download the app and start playing with it you think that it sucks, but once you actually have a real project to put together, it moves from sucks to "hey that was actually pretty handy and the results look nice". The limitation with this app on the Ipad is that the iPad camera really isn't any good.

PS Express - Photo edits before sharing.

RDP & VNC - Tech utilities to work on my other computers. The surprisingly work well.

Skype - I would have this in the awesome list above if the camera on the iPad was better. This is better than Apple's Facetime.

Speedtest - Simple app to test my internet connection speed.

Not mentioned because these services are so popular, but they really don't have an iPad app.
Facebook
Linkedin

So what are you favorite iPad / iOS applications?

Another tip from my experiences in Mac land.. painful, tormenting at times. I wanted to make sure my mid-2010 Macbook Pro was alway booting into 64 boot mode as I bought Final Cut Pro X and wanted power power power and stability.

So there are several links out there that tell you to modify the "com.apple.Boot.plist" file with the following edit in bold:

"<string> arch=x86_64 </string>"

File location: Library -> Preferences -> SystemConfiguration

For me this ended up being more difficult than planned as it wouldn't let me save the file. I received this error:

"The document “com.apple.Boot.plist” could not be saved."

Here is the resolution.

1) Copy the file to the desktop

2) Make the file edit to the file copy.

3) Save the copy on the desktop.

4) Move the file back to the original location, confirm that you will replace the file. Type in your password. You should be good to go on the next reboot.

Confirmation on the next reboot:

Go to the upper left apple icon menu.

Go to about this mac

Go to more info

Go to software

Confirm that "64-bit Kernel and Extensions" is set to "Yes".
