Distance Education in Papua New Guinea is quickly gaining momentum. The Papua New Guinea's Vision 2050 Plan has already captured the vision to start a country's Open University. Only time will tell. The challenge is now on the Department of Education, the Office of Higher Education (OHE) and esisting Universities and colleges in the country to realize this vision.

The Distance Education or Open Learning is a big world wide movement and many countries have now accepted it as main stream form of education. Goverments have invested heavily in the provision of distance education and trend will continue in the coming years. Promotion of Distance and Open Learning is fully supported by Commonwealth of Learning (COL), the international body set by Commonwealth Countries to over see the advancement of learning, education, and research accross the Commonwealth of Countries.
In Papua New Guinea, almost all the major universities are offering few programs through Distance or Open Learning mode while their maintain their conventional programmes. University of Papua New Guinea is offering it's full Diploma in Accounting and Bachelor of Accounting through Distance and Open Learning mode. It's administered by Open College.
