Text-mining for scientific research v publishers

Researchers are pushing for an end to publishers' default ban on computer scanning of thousands of papers to find links between genes and diseases. The scale of new information in modern science is huge; more than 1.5m scholarly articles are published every year and the volume of data doubles every three years. No individual can keep up with such a volume, and scientists need computers to help them digest and make sense of the information. The restrictions placed by publishers on text mining has led campaigners to view the issue as another front in the battle to make publicly funded research work available through "open access", free at the point of use. That would allow researchers to mine the content freely without needing to request any extra permissions. Read more on this controversy from the Guardian here.

Exam papers are in demand again. If you can't locate exam papers on Webcourses try the ones on the Library website.

To access Kevin St exam papers:

• At the Library website click on Find Exam Papers
• Then Click on Quick Link to Recent Exam Papers.
• Select College of Science, or College of Engineering and click on the year e.g. 2011, 2010 etc.
• Then click on the course code and then the module you require.

You will need a login and password if using outside the DIT network.These are Student and ThunderRoad (case sensitive)

The service is a collection of over 50 reading lists and accompanying editorials covering over 18 subject.

The rigorous academic construction of Emerald Reading ListAssist assures a high level of quality for the user. Each reading list is peer-reviewed by subject experts as well as in-house reviewers to make sure ensure only the highest levels of quality and content.

Every article has been marked for specific attributes which provide information on the article's practical and literary features.

This service directs users to existing Emerald content. As such, access to articles within the reading lists will be subject to your existing level of subscription. The percentage of content available, by product, is shown underneath the abstract for each reading list.

St Patricks Day Public Holiday

DIT Kevin St Library will be closed on Saturday 17th March and Monday 19th March for the St Patrick's Holiday Weekend.

Usual opening hours resume on Tuesday 20th March.

Keep an eye out for the 'global greening' as the Niagara Falls and Leaning Tower of Pisa amongst others turn green.

IEEE Xplore Database remote access

Particles of the Past

To celebrate Dublin City of Science 2012, the Particles of the Pastexhibition will showcase a selection of science-related gems from the National Library of Ireland's collections.

The NLI will also host a series of free public lectures linked to this exhibition.
