New DITA Links – Customizing PDF and DITA Specialization

I’ve just added entries to ‘Useful DITA Links’ on the DITA Content page. Four links involve customizing DITA PDF output. One of those links opens the XMetaL Author Enterprise 5.1 User’s Guide. The User’s Guide contains much valuable info besides PDF customization.

A fifth link leads to a video on DITA Specialization (altering the DITA Document Type Definition, DTD), by Simon Bate.

Blogging Advice from Tom Johnson’s Presentation at STC Conference

Are you a blogger, or thinking about starting a blog? You should listen to Tom Johnson’s presentation “Blogging: A New Role for Technical Communicators.” His blog post, which contains a link to the presentation, is here.

It’s raining energetically today, so I’m catching up on my reading/listening. Tom’s presentation, recorded at the last STC conference, inspired me to take a new look at my blog. Listening to the 90-minute recording was time well-spent.

He includes Search Engine Optimization, focus, WordPress plugins, writing compelling content (tell a story). He ends his presentation with ten tips for starting a blog.

I’m not doing his presentation justice. Go read it yourself. High value, not boring. What’s not to like? Why aren’t you subscribing to Tom Johnson’s blog?

Another Perspective of DITA

Here’s an interesting perspective on DITA from Roger Hart.

“For anybody lucky enough to have missed the brouhaha and evangelism, DITA stands for Darwin Information Typing Architecture, and it’s an XML schema that thinks it’s a religion. Ok, that’s a spot unfair, but the fanboys are noisome. DITA is all about breaking down content and separating it into salient reusable blocks, separate from presentation.”
