Missourians, again, say "NO!" to Obamacare

This morning, more than 100 Missourians from throughout the state converged upon the Capitol's riverside and stood in the drizzling rain for nearly two hours.

Why?

To send a message to Governor Nixon to listen to Missourians and say “NO!” to Obamacare.

As you may recall, an overwhelming majority of voters passed Proposition C (the Missouri Health Care Freedom act) in August 2010 with more than 70% of the vote. Clearly, most Missourians support having the freedom to make their own healthcare decisions and do not wish to be forced to comply with a federal mandate or be penalized for refusing to purchase private health insurance.

However, earlier this week, a Missouri Senate Interim Committee on Health Insurance Exchanges hearing was held at the Capitol where citizens voiced their opposition to implementation of the Federal healthcare mandate. At the same time that this meeting was being held, the Missouri Health Insurance Pool board was meeting and planning on voting to accept $21 million dollars in grant money from the Federal Government (that had been applied for) to implement a Missouri Health Insurance Exchange. The news quickly spread among freedom-loving Missourians and prompted grassroots efforts to hold this morning’s rally and send a message to the Governor.

The rally was hosted by I Heard The People Say and the Missouri Conservative Coalition.

Brenda Webb and Annette Reed (I Heard The People Say) welcomed the crowd. Paul Couture, conservative activist, led the opening and closing prayers and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Among those speaking to the crowd were Senator Jane Cunningham, Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder, Congressman Todd Akin, State Representative Paul Curtman and former State Representative Allen Icet (on behalf of U.S. Congressional candidate Ed Martin).

Karladine Graves and Mark Muller from the Missouri Conservative Coalition also spoke and invited the crowd to attend their meeting after lunch.

A few of the handmade signs citizens carried to the event read “71% said NO!”, “Prop ‘C’ – 71% of MO. Voters said ‘NO’ to ‘Obamacare,’” “Respect our vote,” “We, the people said NO! Prop C -- 71%,” “and “Part of the 71.1%.”

Attendees were encouraged to handwrite their own personal messages to the Governor on a large handmade greeting card that read “Greetings Gov. Nixon.”
