Dhanteras 2012 is on Sunday Novemner 11th (Kartik Kishna Paksha). In the North India, Dhanteras is celebrated on Trayodashi of Kartik Krishna Paksha. It is a known fact that on Diwali, Goddess Laxmi needs to be revered and worshipped for wealth and prosperity. The story goes that Goddess Lakshmi showed herself on the day when the churning of the ocean took place.

The Story
Once upon a time a great Saint Durvasa while going out for a walk met dev indra on the way. He gave Indra a garland. However, Indra ignored the saint and threw the garland and went off in his vehicle airavata. On this behavior durvasa got angry, and cursed him by saying that Lakshmi would leave him. Indra realized his mistake and left ashamed. He said sorry to him. Durvasa then said that only Lord Vishnu can help him. Goddess Lakshmi indeed left Indra and Indra lost everything, including his kingdom. Devils attacked Indra. He went to lord Vishnu with his teacher and guide Brihaspati Lord. Vishnu adviced him to make the devils his friends and both should churn the the sea of milk to get the mil of immorality. On churning process, the nectar was produced and drunked by all the gods. Devi Lakshmi immediately appeared there in a beautiful lotus. She gave the pot with nectar to Indra and the devas and Indra got back everything that he had lost earlier.

This is the story of dev indra and devi lakshmi and how Laxmi was born to restore wealth. Thus Diwali festival is celebrated to commemorate the birth of the Goddess of Wealth.

Choti Diwali is celebrated as a mark of victory of Lord Krishna over Narkasur, ruler of Pragjyotishpur. Narkasurwho defeated Lord Indra and imprisoned in his prison 16,000 daughters of various Gods and Saints. Lord Krishna, after killing Narkasur smeared his forehead with Narkasur's blood and returned home on this day. He was welcomed by a massage using a scented oil and bath so as to cleanse his body from the filth of the battle.

Since then, on Choti diwali day, there has been a tradition of people waking up early in the morning, breaking a bitter fruit and applying "ubtan" (kumkum-oil paste) on their body. Then they take bath. Paste of gram flour, fragrant powders and oil is also used in some states for applying ubtan. The breaking of fruit symbolizes crushing of Narkasur's head and the applying of ubtan represents smearing of blood by Lord Krishna on his forehead.

Another legend is about King Bali, who was king of the nether world. His power and increasing influence posed a threat to the security of all 'Devas'. So all devas prayed to Lord Vishnu to help them out. To help Devas and to reduce King Bali's powers, Lord Vishnu went to King Bali in the guise of a short-height 'Brahmin', who is known as incarnation of 'Batu Waman'. Lord Vishnu begged King Bali to give him only that much area of land that he could cover with in three steps because King Bali was well known for his philanthropy. King Bali saw just a short-height 'Brahmin' asking for a little piece of land so he proudly granted him his wish.

That very moment that short-height 'Brahmin' disappeared and there was powerful Lord Vishnu in place of him. In his first step, Lord Vishnu covered the heaven and in the second step the earth and asked King Bali where to put his third step. Then King Bali offered his head to Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu put his third step on his head and pushed him deep into the underground. But at the same time being impressed by his generosity Lord Vishnu gave King Bali the lamp of knowledge and allowed him to return to earth once a year to light millions of lamps.

The Environment

A clutter-free environment is essential to regulate and improve the flow positive energy in the area. Laxmiji enters the house which is properly neat & clean.

Main door decoration on Diwali

The main door should be neat & clean and should not make any creaking voice.
A silver swastika should be placed on the main door as it keeps the ills out of the house.
The Asthamangala sign, which is the seat of lotus wearing a sacred garland of eight auspicious symbols, can also be placed (Ashtamangala refers to eight (Ashta) auspicious (Mangala) items that are used in this type of divination. These eight items are: ghee lamps (brass lamp with wick in clarified butter), mirror, gold, milk, yogurt, fruits, book and white cloth).
Goddess Laxmi should be welcome by stamping small footprints from the entrance to the house, they should always show the inward movement.
Colourful Toran/Bandarwal should be hanged on the main door.
The ideal Toran is made with the leaves of mango, kaner, peepal, ashok trees. They help in purifying the environment and keep the negative vibes out of the house.

Put two earthen diyas on both the sides of the main entrance door.
When placing the diyas outside the house, they should be placed in multiples of four, as each diya represents the reigning deity of Diwali – Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ganesh, Lord Kuber and Lord Indra.
Put floating candles with rose petals and pure water in the centre of the house to ensure positivity in the house.

Dhanteras is celebrated on Trayodashi of Kartik Krishna Paksha. Apart from Dev Dhanvantri, Goddess Lakshmi and God Kuber are worshipped on this day. Yam Dev is also offered Deep Dan on this day. it is believed, worshipping Lord Yam on this day cancel any premature death. After worshipping Yam Dev, a lamp should be lit on the entrance door facing the south direction for the whole night. Few coins and kodi are put in this lamp.

Pradosh Kal: Pradosh Kal is the time of 2 hours 24 minutes after sunset. Deep Dan and Lakshmi Pujan is considered auspicious during this time. On 24th October 2011, sunset time will be from 17:44 to 20:08 in Delhi. During this period, Taurus Lagna will be the fixed Lagna from 19:05 to 20:08. The mahurat time will bring wealth in Home and family.

The worshipping of Dhanteras should be done in Subh Muhurat. First of all 13 lamps should be lighted and Kuber in the Locker should be worshipped. Lord Kuber is worshipped and offered flowers and it is said the I worship you Kuber lord who sits on the best plane similar to Garudamani, holding Gadha in both the hands and wearing crown on head, dear friend of lord Shiva. After this worship with incense sticks, lamps, Navedy and chant the following mantra

'यक्षाय कुबेराय वैश्रवणाय धन-धान्य अधिपतये
धन-धान्य समृद्धि मे देहि दापय स्वाहा ।'
