Oh no! Stuck without something to do in Tel Aviv today?

There’s nothing quite like a roof party on a chilled holiday Sunday, so if you’re into tech house at all, head down to King George 47 today from 15:00 – 23:00 for Metronome II, the second collaboration between Freaktion and Roof Animals. There’s going to be a cheap bar, funky tech house that’s perfect for the afternoon going into sunset going into evening and, of course, a Tel Aviv roof. If you get there before 16:00 it’s also 100% free. After that it’s 30NIS.

Care to discover music and merchandise by Israel’s most underground of labels? Well today’s the day. From 12:00 – 16:00 today at the Tel Aviv Uganda Bar, you can attend a tiny but perfectly formed event where the country’s independent and lesser known music labels will be setting up shop and selling albums (on CD vinyl and even tape), T shirts, stickers and loads more stuff. Entry is free, of course.

Musical styles include punk, hardcore, metal, kraut rock, garage, electronica, surf rock, industrial, psychedelic and prog rock and loads more.

Last minute competition! If you like house music and want to go to a party at Tel Aviv’s finest nightclub tomorrow night absolutely free of charge (instead of paying 60-80NIS per ticket) then check out the competitions I am running to win 2 pairs of tickets. As Sunday is a holiday, this week is busy with quite a few good parties. First up, if you’ve not checked out the Glocally night offering yet and you’re into global beats / hip hop and world music, then you can read about it here.

Now let’s carry on with the rest of them. There are literally dozens to choose form, so I’ll be brief about it.

Thursday

At the Block Club, you can hear German house sensation Dixon play his funky stuff. If you’re into fine house music, a big venue with good sound and no smoking on the dancefloor (but OK in the smoker’s lounge) then this is basically your best bet. Tickets 80NIS on the door or 60NIS plus booking fee if you buy them in advance here. Starts at 23:00 goes on till morning.

Walter from TABAC will be playing bassy goodness at the Michatronix from 22:00, around an unusual audiovisual live performance from Yokai Lab (act on around 23:00). Party goes on till 7:00 and is free. If you like tiny venues and surreal vibes then this is your party for (at least some of) the night.

Hip hop / rap night at the Sublime from 23:00 with a local rap battle and loads of local DJs and acts. Women get in for 10NIS before midnight and guys for 40NIS. 50NIS after midnight. Here’s some of what you should expect.

The Zizi are having a white party (Shavuot is the white holiday) from 23:00, not sure about the price, but it’s going to be friendly, trashy and both gay and straight friendly. Come dressed in white.

Friday

The Legotek DJs are taking over the Shesek Bar. If you want some dance bar vibes rather than full on clubbing but still want awesome tech house music then voila! 22:00 – late, free.

The Comfort 13 club will host a night of dubstep niceness from the Submob Crew guys. The headliners will be none other than:

DODGE & FUSKI (NSD, UK) // XKORE (BUYGORE, INSPECTED, UK) // CAPTAIN CRUNCH (BEST DJ DMA AWARD 2011, BUYGORE, UK). Tickets 60NIS presale from here (pick up with ID on the door) or 70NIS on the door on the night before 00:30. Not sure if there will be any at all after that. Doors at 23:30 and the event runs till 5:00.

Saturday

Hip hop lovers longing for a more alternative crowd can head down to Levontin 7 for SWAG. Doors at 00:30 goes on till late. 40NIS. On the decks are some of Israel’s finest:

The Block Club has Pacotek ( techno / tech house) with Lawrence and Discoromo, alongside Poingi (yay!) and Shay Appleberg. Doors at 23:00. Tickets 50-90NIS, depending on how early you show up: 50NIS till midnight, 70NIS till 1:00 and then 90. Gonna be gooood.

The Maxim Club has an 80s kitsch / dark 80s night (4th grade party) from 23:30 – 6:00. Lots of hits, new wave, goth and cheese. Tickets 40NIS till 1:00, then 60NIS.

Shavuot (which I believe falls on next Sunday) is a big big dairy holiday, but that doesn’t mean vegans and those who are vegan friendly can’t enjoy it too. This Saturday, the traditional Rogatka brunch is going to be all about Shavuot, with all kinds of traditionally dairy-heavy dishes made vegan and accompanied by light and airy vegetable based food and even one of the holiday’s most popular desserts – Hungarian Blintzes, obviously minus the cheese. This time, the crew in charge of cooking includes a particularly fine cook (not that the rest of them aren’t good, obviously), so if you fancy a cheap vegan meal on Saturday and want to check out what the Rogatka has to offer, then this is certainly a good week. It starts at 13:00 and costs only 25NIS per person.

This Thursday, Roni Kantor is launching her summer 2012 collection at her studio. We’re talking beautiful retro-inspired shoes for women that also happen to be consciously vegan (and still manage to be comfortable, high quality and absolutely adorable) plus one-off redesigns and vintage inspired clothes, separates and even wedding dresses. This Thursday from 20:00 – 00:00 as well as Friday from 10:00 – 19:00 and Saturday from 12:00 – 19:00 there’ll be 10% off everything in the store and one room of past collections where everything will be 70% off. If you’re one of her 10,000 plus Facebook friends (hint, go to her page and become one), you can also have 20% off an item of your choice.
Apart from that, the usual stuff – music, some bubbles, a friendly vibe, etc..

Another great (and free) night for all you lovers of electroswing, which, in case you’re wondering, sounds more like upbeat house music mixed with classic 20s-40s swing tunes. Basically, if you like happy 4×4 dance music or house music in general you’ll love this. If you like both dance music and swing / old jazz tunes, then you’re totally going to love this. It’s all happening tomorrow night at the Milk Bar from 22:00 – 4:00. Come as you are or decked in your finest vintage/retro attire – the dress code is encouraged but never enforced.

This Thursday at the Barby Club is another one of the excellent Glocally nights, showcasing great local live bands in the realm of world/ethnic music from Palestinian hip hop / rap to African beats and lots of unexpected stuff in between.

Tickets are 80NIS and you can get them from the Barby box office. This Thursday 24/5 at 21:00.

Computer Camp will be filming their new video at the Michatronix tomorrow and you get to come and join them for free. Head down there from 21:00 onwards (cameras start shooting at 21:30) for a night of fun electronica from these guys, a surprise guest and DJ Assaf Samuel playing till morning. This is the first night of the new project by Michatronix which will feature a different band once a month for the filming of a live video. I’ll obviously let you know about the next ones as well.

If you’re into community gardening, then you might want to get in on the open day / tour of the little community gardening project at Harav Kuk 42. Tomorrow from 14:30-17:00 the volunteers will be showing people around the garden and telling its story. It’s a very small garden, but a really sweet one and well loved. This tour can be the perfect alternative answer to the whole Houses from Within thing happening this week. The place is run by volunteers not just from the neighbourhood it’s in, so if you’re in Tel Aviv for a longer time and want to join in and help them grow stuff then you’re welcome. The tour is free. It might be held in Hebrew, but I’m sure you’ll find someone to translate or at least answer questions.
