You are a man of many talents, but why don’t we begin with telling everybody a little bit about your latest venture, Blue Chemical Photography…

AK: Blue Chemical is my effort and attempt to show the world my obscured way of seeing life, and how I believe that "ugly" and "beauty" is really one married concept. I think flaws are the most perfect thing.

DJK: What inspired you to venture into photography?

AK: What inspired me to take photographs is my love for painting. I would paint for days and days but it's not a quick satisfaction. Photography, for me is a much faster process. Also I love the intimacy between the subject and myself. You are capturing a moment in time that'll never happen again!! That's really powerful when you meditate on that.

DJK: You have such a unique style, what would you call your style, or can you even put a label on it?

AK: It's difficult for me to label it. I know It's tilted, fantasy and whimsical. I have no formal training, so therefore I'm not bound to rules or style. I just aim to tap a familiar place in us all; scary, deep, happy or bewilderment.

<img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7SaVU8m0cyHzARuGfA4zT8PGkFe3qbH20_rcBEXfu6UC9tbht3FL2FXb2JWp4vZfwV0acsJTlko2N76n5lAdSPS8evQy_WupFWU6x3wPj7PIRbmOeevUZNe58XdMCfTXfXaWiXF869Zc/s1600/allure+king+7.jpg" t$="true" />DJK: Your models are so uniquely beautiful, how do you find them?

AK: Sometimes I find models and sometimes they find me. I try to go extremely out of their comfort zone or some of their styles. It only makes sense to find a place where it really looks like they belong. Either way, I aim to really push people. I love to have someone overcome insecurity or fear. Art is an amazing form of therapy.

<img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyKazl8-3zBwUY1rvQtFfUjUFeaaRPEDxacF0x5LuhSEuV4QvQJGvJVMTpmRQ3l5EEsMXJPtTCkPe_IEeoF0189VmpLePiTdReVV3usU2AeFulYejR18eEjkoxhdJQuxa8U94ZekSvSxk/s1600/allure+king+5.jpg" t$="true" />DJK: Why do you like photographing people over other subject matter?

AK: I shoot people because we are so vulnerable. We move and bend in such a way. We tell different stories and people see themselves differently than the rest of the world. I love to push people and tilt them to the edge until they trust themselves and then come to trust me. It's more intimate than making love; it's so powerful without touching. You and the subject are so high because you know that you are doing something so special and it feels wickedly good but the best part about it is; it's innocent…

DJK: Anything funny ever happen while you’ve been out shooting?

AK: A funny moment that comes to mind is, a few months back, I did a shoot with 4 young ladies, in my studio. It was a nude shoot, with the models only covered in face mud, over their bodies and my wife was a part of the model crew. In comes our 2 year old son who starts chanting "boobs, boobs, boobs"!! All the ladies turned red and looked at each other, embarrassed. Be on your path before making a life commitment to someone, so that you've made your passion, your world and then, when you find someone to live and share your life with they should have a full scope of what you live to do. Then you will be free to be you and should always remain the soul who determines how far you go with your dreams. Be bold and be brave! Without these kinds of people who walk the earth we'd still believe that the world is flat!

London (CNN) -- Singer Amy Winehouse was found dead at her apartment in London Saturday, the UK Press Association reported. She was 27.

London police said they were called to a home, which matches Winehouse's address, Saturday afternoon in response to "a woman found deceased."

"On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene," a police statement said.

"At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained," police said.

The "Rehab" singer had a history of battling drugs and alcohol and recently left a British rehabilitation program that a representative said was intended to prepare her for scheduled European concerts.
But she cut short the European concert tour in Belgrade, Serbia, last month after she staggered around the stage and stumbled through several songs.

Audience members booed Winehouse off the stage that night just a few songs into the first concert of the tour.

Winehouse rep Tracey Miller told CNN at the time that the singer "agreed with management that she cannot perform to the best of her ability and will return home."

"Everyone involved wishes to do everything they can to help her return to her best and she will be given as long as it takes for this to happen," representative Chris Goodman said in a statement in May.

Winehouse's throaty vocals brought the British musician stardom in 2007, but her off-stage life gained her notoriety. The lyrics of her songs, especially the hit "Rehab," chronicled her troubled life.

The song, in which she sang "They tried to make me go to rehab, I said no, no, no," helped form the public's view of Winehouse.

"I don't care enough about what people think of me to conform to anything," she said in a CNN interview.
Winehouse, born in London in 1983, became a picture of a tattooed teenage rebel after she was expelled from a prestigious performing arts school.

Her first album, "Frank," debuted in 2003, when the singer-songwriter was 19.

International success came with her 2007 album "Back To Black," which in included the single "Rehab."

Music is an Awesome Gift - Never take it for Granted

Here's another old blog I wrote back in 2008 for Myspace, back when you had the old playlists on your page with your fave songs. Thought I would share...

Music is an incredible gift to us all - we must never take it for granted...

Music, where would my life be without it? I can't even imagine. You may have read my earlier blog "Thanks for the Music", and if you did you will understand how diverse my tastes are.

I am writing this to share with those who are interested my reasons for choosing the songs in my new playlist. Each of these songs holds meaning for me; they remind me of places, or people or times in my life that are special to me in their own way. It is my belief Music is an incredible gift to us all – we must never take it for granted…

Behind the songs….

In My Life – Johnny Cash (covering the Beatles). This song brings back special memories for me; a chance to reflect on the past, the present and to remember, honor and appreciate all of our loved ones who mean so much to us. This version in particular brings out very strong emotions for me. My niece Emily used this song a few years back in a family video she created to share with us on Thanksgiving. It was a beautiful pictorial of our family; those who have passed away, those who are still alive and the special times we all have shared. It brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it – and reminds me to be grateful for what I have….

Heaven's Last Attempt – Jude Cole. This is one of the two songs on my list by Jude. I would have chosen more (I'll be honest, I could have done a whole blog on his songs alone – LOL) but the selection that is available to download through the playlist program is very limited! Anyhow…. I am a huge fan of Jude's; and I like to think that through his music, he has been a part of my life for over 20 years now. He will always hold a special place in my heart. This song is also very emotional for me, reminds me a lot of my own life: of my never-ending search to find myself in this big and sometimes lonely world. It's about faith, hope and that amazing thing we call forgiveness, and the realization that sometimes everything you've been searching for has been with you all the time…

Workin at the Car Wash Blues – Jim Croce. I must admit I used to cringe when "Time in a Bottle" came on the radio when I was younger, but I am really starting to appreciate artists like Jim as I get older, and have to thank my husband for helping me rediscover his music. Let's face it, you just don't hear this kind of talented, story telling type of music much these days. I don't mean to offend anyone, as I have said before, I am very open minded when it comes to music. But I have a hard time with all the crappy, sorry excuse for talent that is being produced these days (thanks to shows like American Idol). How did we ever get to the point where it is more important to be good looking, well dressed, and don't worry if your voice sucks, we can fix it in the studio… Kids who have never paid their dues, (who will never know what it's like to play in the local dives, trying to scrape enough money together to pay for food and yet still managing to hold on to your dream of making it big some day) are now overnight superstars with instant world wide exposure and million dollar recording contracts. Yeah, I know I am going to make some enemies now – LOL. Jim Croce struggled and fought tooth and nail to achieve the notoriety he so well deserved – it's just a shame he never lived long enough to enjoy the fame. I always wondered how many other great songs he would have written had he not been taken from us so suddenly….

Dear Prudence – The Beatles. Again, I could have picked a million Beatle tunes for this list, but I chose two. This song always lifts my spirits and takes me away to a carefree place – it brings me back to the innocence of childhood. I grew up with the timeless music of the Beatles, and it's no coincidence that my two all time favorites are on the album my older sisters left behind when they moved out of the house. Thanks again to them….

When You're Only Lonely – JD Souther. Having grown up listening to The Eagles, it's hard not to appreciate JD Souther, he did co-write some of their biggest hits… I chose this song because it also brings you back to a different time in music and life, a more innocent time, when all your problems and sorrows could be washed away just by holding your favorite guy or girl in your arms…

Colorful – Rocco Deluca and The Burden. Talk about amazing! I was blown away when I first heard Colorful on our local Chicago radio station – so thanks to WXRT and Ironworks Music for turning me and the rest of the world onto them! This man is single-handedly bringing the Dobro to the top of the modern music charts! Colorful is a great song – but I have to be honest, it really was songs like "Dope" and "Gift" that sold me on Rocco. Unfortunately, I was not able to post either of those songs due to lack of availability on project playlist, ehemmm. The other songs on his debut are more true to his unique style – a must listen for anyone who craves an awesome new talent unlike any other you have heard before! This man is truly Colorful…

Amos Moses – Jerry Reed. LOL about sums it up – can you imagine this song making it onto the charts, or even making it out of the swamp for that matter? I remember hearing this song as a kid - my dad had a tendency to play fun music like this and "Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road." My husband plays this song whenever we need a good laugh, to quote "he could trap the biggest, meanest alligator and just use one hand, that's all he got left cause the alligator bit it!" You may know Jerry's more popular hit "Eastbound and Down" the anthem from Smokey and The Bandit. Another talented storyteller – through song, Jerry Reed reminds us not to always take ourselves or our music too seriously…

New Kid in Town – The Eagles. How do I choose just one favorite Eagles song? There are so many I love, again having been fortunate enough to be surrounded by their music growing up. I guess I chose this song because it reminds me of the struggle we all go through at some point in our lives of being the new kid. This song plays in my head every time I start a new job, move to a new location or when I am introduced to a new group of people. While initially the feeling may be uncomfortable and yet thrilling, just when you are just starting get used to the spotlight, like the song says, somebody new comes along…

Last Dance with Mary Jane – Tom Petty. For starts, gotta love the double entendre, right? Another artist I really enjoy – just an amazing musician. The song brings me back to my crazy teenage party years – how we managed to live through them is a miracle. You know you've grown up when you can happily kiss those days goodbye…

World's Apart – Jude Cole. It's Jude – what else can I say? OK, Jude with awesome backup! Just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this man's talent. I remember owning this cd for some time before hearing this song on the radio. It was probably WXRT to think of it. I was so excited – they were finally playing JUDE on the radio! In a way, it's a bittersweet memory for me. The overwhelming joy of finally hearing his song on the radio and knowing that it was just a matter of time before the whole world would know the name Jude Cole. And years later, the pain I felt for loving an artist who would never get the recognition and credit he truly deserved from the bureaucratic assholes that made up the modern day music empire. But Jude does things his own way – and that is another reason I love him so. He has founded his own production company with Kiefer Sutherland called Ironworks Music, and together they are bringing recognition to the truly talented bands that may otherwise be passed over by other labels. I will continue to shamelessly promote his music every chance I get, because it is such an important part of my life. I may never get the chance to meet him and thank him in person, but I will try to return the favor somehow by turning as many people as I can onto him in the hope that someday, everybody around the world will know and love his music as much as me.

While My Guitar Gently Weeps – The Beatles. I told you my two favorites were off the same album! So why this song? Two words sum it up – George Harrison. He is my favorite of the fab four – another one who should have had more recognition. The song is incredible – the words may be little more than nonsense to some, but the guitar is moving and takes on a life of it's own in this tune. The harmonies are so sweet and I would spend many hour singing back up to George's tender voice. This is the song that made me want to play and made me want to sing. I really miss him…

Angie – The Rolling Stones. I seem to remember this being one of the songs my brother used to play for me on his guitar when I was a little girl. Just one of the many he would play for me when I would stumble into his room at night because I couldn't sleep. There was safety and security in music for me, and even at such a young age, it had an important role in my life…

Hard to Say – Dan Fogelberg. Oh boy, my metalhead friends are really gonna whip me for this one – LOL. So then why would I put this song on my list? Back in the days, or so I am told, it was a normal thing for hugely talented singers to appear on other hugely talented singers albums. Umm, does that make sense? In this case, Glenn Frey is providing backing vocals for Dan on this song. You don't see too much of that thing anymore, unfortunately. Too many egos I guess. Lately I find myself waking up to the smell of coffee brewing and the sound of this song blasting on weekend mornings. It's comforting in a way…

Handle Me with Care – Traveling Wilburys. There's a pattern here somewhere, LOL. A band formed by such greatness all for the fun of playing music and poking fun at themselves. Isn't that what it's all about?

Old Man – Neil Young. This song brings me back to the days of the Sunday family jam sessions we used to have when I was a kid. Those were good times, even if I was only allowed to play the bongo drums! We always seemed to have a million different instruments in our house, and I am sure that this song is solely responsible for the addition of a banjo. Not sure if my old man knew what this song was about or not, but he always played along. We all did. Those were good times…

Walk On – U2. You know me, ever the non-conformist. While all the other kids were discovering the incredible band known as U2 in high school, I was so deeply into the metal scene I never paid them any attention. As usual, a few years later I realized what I was missing and went out and bought everything I could find by Bono and the boys. Again, there are a million songs I could have chosen, but this song speaks to me. It's amazing to me that I find at least one song on every cd that can sum up how I am feeling about my life at the time. To me, the song is about strength, the courage to be yourself no matter what others may think. And when the shit gets to be too much, you can always walk on and leave it behind…

Rob Grill, Lead Singer of the Grass Roots, Dies at 67

<img border="0" height="168" m$="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsfs5C29lFZmryZHh29tIxWyjDh_OLEXsfPifXEtHl6LB93PTq0CDe1bkXychEp9FuKqCiz8JrbfPb8NP9c9RTbiYlmcH-7H-rmYecfP5ZFG4Z37P1_I6TBoBTJZwva-LraErVFloy7mo/s320/sub-GRILL-obit-articleLarge.jpg" width="320" />
Rob Grill, the longtime lead singer and a very nearly original member of the Grass Roots, the immensely popular rock group of the 1960s and afterward, died on Monday in Tavares, Fla. He was 67.

The cause was complications of a head injury he sustained in a fall last month, his wife, Nancy, said. Mr. Grill was a longtime resident of Mount Dora, Fla.

From the mid-1960s to the mid-’70s, the Grass Roots were a fixture on the airwaves and a regular presence on “American Bandstand.” They sold tens of millions of records and had more than a dozen Top 40 hits. Among their best known are “Let’s Live for Today,” “Midnight Confessions,” “Temptation Eyes” and “Two Divided by Love.”

The band’s style married elements of folk-rock, soul, blues and R&B. Its songs, whose close-knit harmonies evoked the British pop groups of the period, were bouncy, accessible and eminently danceable, often backed by an upbeat brass section.

“The Grass Roots weren’t the hippest band on the block,” The Boston Globe wrote in 1989. “But they were — and remain — a sure-fire guilty pleasure, a blissful package of pure pop.”

The group’s longest-serving member, Mr. Grill appeared with the Grass Roots for more than four decades: first in the group’s heyday and again as the band has enjoyed a renaissance on the oldies circuit. His voice — high, sweet and supple — was memorably urgent and beseeching in the group’s many songs of love.
He also played bass and wrote some of the group’s songs, though the Grass Roots’ best-known material was written primarily by nonmembers.

The Grass Roots began life as a phantom. In the mid-1960s, two Los Angeles songwriters, Steve Barri and P. F. Sloan, were asked by their label, Dunhill Records, for songs that would capitalize on the growing appetite for folk-rock.

They wrote “Where Were You When I Needed You” and, as the Grass Roots, recorded a demo. When the song had some success on the radio, they cast about for an existing band to become the Grass Roots.
They enlisted a San Francisco group named the Bedouins, who recorded the first Grass Roots album, also titled “Where Were You When I Needed You.”

In 1967, after the Bedouins decamped, Mr. Barri and Mr. Sloan recruited the 13th Floor, a Los Angeles band comprising Creed Bratton, Rick Coonce, Warren Entner and Kenny Fukomoto. (Mr. Bratton, the lead guitarist, later worked as an actor; he is known for playing the eccentric quality assurance director — also named Creed Bratton — on the American sitcom “The Office.”)

Just as the 13th Floor was about to sign on as the Grass Roots, Mr. Fukomoto was drafted, and Mr. Grill was brought in as a replacement. He remained with the group through the late ’70s, when it faded from view, a casualty of changing popular taste.

Mr. Grill managed new incarnations of the band in 1978 and ’79, rejoining it in the early 1980s. He performed with the Grass Roots throughout much of the ’80s, ’90s and 2000s.

Mr. Grill appeared on many of the band’s albums and also recorded a solo album, “Uprooted,” released in 1979.

Robert Frank Grill was born in Los Angeles on Nov. 30, 1943. Intending to become a lawyer, he studied at California State University, Los Angeles, before pursuing a career in music.

Mr. Grill’s first marriage ended in divorce. Besides his wife, the former Nancy Pilski, whom he married in 1986, he is survived by a brother, James. A son from his first marriage, Christian, died of cancer last year.
Mr. Grill lived for years with chronic pain as a result of a degenerative bone disorder known as avascular necrosis and the multiple hip-replacement operations it entailed. In 2007, he was arrested on charges of having obtained the prescription painkiller oxycodone from multiple doctors, in violation of Florida law.
He entered a guilty plea, which was later vacated after he completed a pretrial intervention program, his wife said.

On the whole, however, Mr. Grill’s life — and the lives of his band mates — was so tame that it became, in some quarters, a professional sticking point.

“I asked one of the guys at VH1’s ‘Behind the Music’ why we weren’t on,” Mr. Grill told The Huntsville (Ala.) Times in 2005. “And he said, ‘Were you guys ever into heroin?’ and I said, ‘No.’ He said we just weren’t compelling enough.”
(July 12, 2011) — Gretsch celebrates the legacy of George Harrison with the G6128T-GH George Harrison SIGNATURE Duo Jet guitar, modeled on the instrument that the legendary guitarist referred to as his “first real decent guitar.”

Features include distinctive appointments and modifications found on and inspired by Harrison’s original 1957 Gretsch Duo Jet, which he purchased secondhand in the early 1960s. These include a lightweight mid-’50s-style chambered body, all-black color scheme (arched maple top, mahogany back and sides, and back of the one-piece mahogany neck), Bigsby® B3C tailpiece with a black Phillips head tremolo arm pivot bolt, and an offset strap button on the lower bout.

Other features include three-ply body binding (white-black-white), white single-ply neck and headstock binding, 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with 12” radius and hump-block pearloid inlays, two single-coil DynaSonic™ pickups, vintage-style “rocking bar” bridge with rosewood base, silver plexi pickguard, chrome-plated Grover® V98CM Sta-Tite™ tuners, Gretsch “G” arrow control knobs, chrome-plated hardware, Harrison’s signature on the truss rod cover and a premium tweed case.

The G6128T-GH George Harrison SIGNATURE Duo Jet evokes the vibe of Harrison’s original Duo Jet, which he held dear in the Beatles’ early-’60s era and used to record the group’s landmark first album, Please Please Me (1963). A quarter-century later, Harrison was pictured with the guitar on the cover of his acclaimed 1987 solo album, Cloud Nine. An old blog I wrote a few years ago for Myspace. Giving thanks to those who have helped my on my way....

I was fortunate to grow up in a musically diverse family - everyone plays at least one instrument if not several. My fondest memories of childhood are the Sunday night jam sessions we used to have after dinner. Every instrument you can imagine, we had it. Oh, and there was this amazing wash tub bass.. ehemm.. But even with all of those glorious instruments in our house, I was usually stuck playing the tamborine, the maracas or the bongos - because according to my older siblings, I was too small to play anything else, DOH! I am still possessed by the drummer bug to this day and when nobody is looking - Keith Moon lives on through me!

I love all music - well, ok, most music. My mom was into opera and big band, my dad was into show tunes and country, LOL, my oldest sisters were into Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, The Eagles, James Taylor, Cat Stevens, the list goes on! When I couldn't sleep at night, my brother used to play Stairway to Heaven for me on his guitar or Heart or Jefferson Airplane. My other sister was into Styx, Rush, Cheap Trick, Black Sabbath and I remember many a night of joining her in her room to play War Pigs on our guitars....

And me, I was a total metal head once all the other influences left the house! Ahh, the good ole days! But I am just as happy playing my beloved Jude Cole and my Eagles as I am playing Megadeth and The Foo Fighters. I love the looks I get driving to work in my business suit while I am banging my head to Anthrax on the radio, LOL!

I am eternally grateful to my parents for sparking my interest in music at an early age and making it part of our family time every week. I am also grateful to my older siblings who left behind their Beatle albums, ELO, The Turtles (ok, could have done without that one - all I did was stare at Flo in that fig leaf, eeek!)

I have fond memories of sneaking into my sister's room when she was out and borrowing her Rush, Supertramp and Styx albums - and her beautiful black Gibson SG.... Which, by the way, I broke the head off of (after tuning the strings so tight to play along with Rush) when I leaned it up against the wall and it tumbled to it's untimely death, sigh. Sorry for that, Dee. The guitar suffered another devastating blow when my sister came home to find her beloved black beauty decapitated (ok, the head was still being held on by the strings....) and then proceeded to throw it down the stairs at my head - she missed, thank the Lord! Ah, the memories.....

So today, I can switch gears from one genre to the next without blinking an eye. Which comes in handy when you have a husband whose idea of jam music is Glenn Campbell and The Bee Gees. Oh, it gets worse. When he wants to torture me he plays Donovan's "Mellow Yellow" (quite right slick - blechhhh) or Captain and Tenille - ARGHHHHHHHHHHH! Right now he is playing Harry Nilsen's "Coconut Song" - he is trying to piss me off because he knows I am blogging about him - oh well, I digress...

I must admit I have been going back to my roots and am finding a lot of the music I didn't care for when I was younger is now appealing to me. Shit, I've become my mother..... No, no, no - no WNUA light jazz music for me, and if I ever start listening to that crap, shoot me! I just don't care for a lot of the new music these days - although I am finding a lot of very talented bands on Myspace! And if it wasn't for Jude Cole and Ironworks producing amazing talent like Rocco Deluca, Honey Honey, Lifehouse and Billy Boy On Poison - I would be stuck paying $500 to go see awesome artists like The Eagles or The Police in concert. So thanks Jude - now I don't have to tap into my 401k to go see good music live....

And thanks again Mom and Dad, Sisters and Brother, and even Husband for enabling me to continue enjoying the many diversities of music......

Welcome to DJ K's Rock n Roll Diary!

Hey everyone! I have decided to give DJ K her own page, where she can have all the freedom to post blogs about that most important subject: MUSIC!!!!!
