Olajumoke The Bread Seller: A Cautionary Tale of Talent, Trust, Exploitation and Betrayal

2024-12-09T09:56:00.000-08:00

The story of Olajumoke the Bread Seller is a cautionary tale for anyone managing or nurturing talent. Discovered by T.Y. Bello and supported Azuka, she was set on a promising path to success. Unfortunately, she was later misled by another individual, Victoria, who convinced her to sign a contract she couldn’t fully understand. Being uneducated and unable to read English, Jumoke was scammed and ultimately lost her footing.

FULL STORY IN VIDEO

This is a recurring issue in the creative and sports industries, where young talents—whether footballers, musicians, or actors—fall prey to exploitative contracts due to a lack of knowledge.

To parents, guardians, and those managing talent: be vigilant during those early stages of growth. Surround your talent with trusted advisors and thoroughly vet any contracts or offers before signing. The wrong connections can derail promising careers.

Let’s ensure these lessons help protect the next generation of rising stars.

LAGOS: 2nd Daniel Ford Elite Youth Table Tennis Invitational Championships Set To Kick Off

2024-12-09T08:51:00.000-08:00

Lagos, Nigeria's bustling commercial hub, is set to come alive as the best youth table tennis stars gather for the second edition of the Daniel Ford Elite Youth Invitational Championships 2024.

The event is scheduled to take place from December 18 to 21 at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium.

Organised by the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) and funded by UK-based Daniel Ford International, this year's edition promises to be even more exciting.

Participants will undergo a two-day clinic led by national coaches, including Dotun Omoniyi, to prepare for the tournament, which kicks off on Friday, December 20, with qualifiers in the U-15 and U-19 categories.

Adesoji Tayo, Vice President of NTTF, highlighted the success of the inaugural edition, which inspired the sponsor to continue their support and include the clinic. “We are grateful to Daniel Ford International for their continued sponsorship, especially with the addition of the clinic to help players prepare for the main event. The clinic will update players on the latest techniques and allow them to test their skills against their peers before the tournament begins. We are excited that some participants from the first edition have made it to the national team and represented Nigeria in major tournaments like the African Championships and Games. We hope to see more talent emerge this year,” he said.

Yemi Edun - Daniel Ford Elite Youth Table Tennis Championship

This year's U-19 title battle will feature national team stars Matthew Kuti, Abdulbasit Abdulfatai, and Muiz Adegoke.

In the U-15 division, 32 players (16 boys and 16 girls) have been invited to compete. The U-19 category promises to be thrilling, with many national team stars in action at this two-day event, which also serves as the federation's end-of-year tournament.

For the system of play, the invited players will be drawn into four groups of 4 or 5 players, each with round-robin matches within each group. Two players from each group will qualify for the knockout stage quarterfinals.

5 Major Differences Between Christmas in Africa and in The USA & UK.

2024-12-09T07:50:00.000-08:00

Christmas is celebrated worldwide, but the way it is experienced varies greatly depending on cultural, geographical, and social factors. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the cultural differences between Christmas celebrations in the U.S., U.K., and Africa, particularly focusing on the vibe and key activities on Christmas Day:

CHRISTMAS IN THE US & UK

1. Family-Centred Celebration

In both the U.S. and U.K., Christmas Day is predominantly a family affair. The emphasis is on staying indoors, spending quality time with close family members, and engaging in traditional rituals like opening gifts and enjoying a festive meal. Many people host gatherings in their homes rather than going out. This is often seen as a time for relaxation and reflection.

2. Weather and Atmosphere

Christmas falls during the winter season, so the weather is cold, often snowy in the U.S. and damp or frosty in the U.K. This creates a cozy, indoor-focused environment.

The winter vibe is complemented by the use of Christmas trees, roaring fires, and twinkling lights, creating a quintessential "Christmas card" atmosphere.

3. Christmas Dinner

The meal is a major highlight. In the U.K., a traditional Christmas dinner includes roast turkey, stuffing, Brussels sprouts, roasted potatoes, and gravy, followed by Christmas pudding. In the U.S., the meal may include turkey, ham, or roast beef, often with sides like mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pies (apple, pumpkin, or pecan).

4. Limited Social Activity

Most people don’t visit extended family or friends on Christmas Day itself. Instead, these visits typically occur in the days leading up to or following Christmas. Public spaces, like restaurants and bars, are usually closed. Christmas morning involves opening gifts, often around the Christmas tree, and afternoons are spent watching Christmas movies or TV specials, playing board games, or relaxing.

5. Religious Observances

Many attend church services on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning. However, for some, the holiday has become more secular, focused on the festive aspects like Santa Claus and gift-giving.

CHRISTMAS IN AFRICA (Particularly Sub Saharan Africa (including Nigeria)

1. Community and Togetherness

Christmas in Africa is highly communal. Unlike the U.K. and U.S., where families often stay within their households, African celebrations often extend to the entire neighbourhood or village. Families visit one another, share food, and celebrate as a collective. It’s common to see streets bustling with activity, with music playing, people dancing, and children running around in new Christmas clothes.

2. Food and Sharing

The preparation and sharing of food are central. Popular dishes vary by region but may include jollof rice, fried rice, grilled meats (e.g., chicken, goat, or beef), soups, and stews. Drinks like chapman (Nigeria) or palm wine are often served. Food is not only enjoyed within families but is also shared with neighbors, friends, and the less privileged, reflecting the spirit of generosity and community.

3. Church and Spirituality

Church services play a significant role, with vibrant, joyous worship often lasting for hours. The day often begins with attending a Christmas service before the festivities kick off. Some churches hold special Christmas programs featuring carol singing, plays, and feasts.

4. Outdoor Celebrations

Unlike the U.S. and U.K., where the cold weather keeps people indoors, the warm African climate allows for outdoor festivities. Many people celebrate in open spaces, such as village squares or city parks. Local events, concerts, or community dances are common. Fireworks and cultural performances often add to the lively atmosphere.

5. Boisterous Energy

The vibe is loud, colourful, and energetic. Music and dancing are integral parts of the celebration, with traditional drumming or Afrobeats songs setting the tone (Detty December). Children, especially, are at the heart of the festivities, receiving gifts, money, or new outfits and enjoying the freedom to play and socialize.

In summary, Christmas in the U.S. and U.K. is marked by a calm, intimate atmosphere, with family at the centre, while Christmas in Africa is characterized by lively communal celebrations, loud music, shared meals, and an emphasis on giving and togetherness beyond immediate family. Both reflect the spirit of the holiday but express it in uniquely cultural ways.

(Video) Do Gen Z's Still Recognise This? An Important Ingredient For A Popular Nigerian Soup.

2024-12-08T03:15:00.000-08:00

The Lost Chore of Shelling Melon Seeds (Egusi)

Growing up, weekends often came with a unique family activity—shelling melon seeds, or egusi. My mom would gather us around, place a basket of unshelled melon seeds in front of us, and task us with cracking them open one by one. It was a tedious chore that seemed normal back then, and everyone in the household, especially the younger ones, played their part. Looking back now, it amazes me how we managed to shell enough seeds for a pot of soup, considering the tiny size of each seed and the patience required. The rhythmic cracking and peeling of seeds became part of the cooking ritual, bonding us as a family while teaching us the value of effort in preparing meals.

WATCH ME SHELLING EGUSI (VIDEO)

Fast forward to today, and the landscape has completely changed. Everything is mechanized—egusi comes pre-ground or at least pre-shelled, ready to use straight out of the package. The convenience is undeniable, but it makes me wonder how many younger people, particularly Gen Z, have ever seen unshelled melon seeds, let alone experienced the labour of preparing them.

It's a forgotten art, a small but significant piece of culture and tradition that is fading with time. If you've ever encountered shelled melon seeds, share your story in the comments. Let’s keep the memory alive!

Travelling To Lagos, Nigeria For Detty December? 5 Things You Should Know!!!

2024-12-07T21:28:00.000-08:00

Lagos, the social heart of Nigeria, transforms into a non-stop party hub every December, welcoming thousands of locals and visitors alike for what has come to be known as Detty December. From electrifying concerts to buzzing nightlife, festive markets, and cultural showcases, this period is a celebration of everything bold and beautiful about Lagos. Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned visitor, navigating the energy of Lagos during Detty December can be as thrilling as it is overwhelming. In this piece, we’ll explore five essential things to look out for, ensuring you make the most of your festive adventure in the city that never sleeps.

Things to Know if You're Traveling to Lagos for Detty December

Plan Ahead for Events and Parties

Lagos is the hub of Detty December, with concerts, festivals, and nightlife at their peak. Popular events like Flytime Music Festival, and The Experience attract huge crowds, so book tickets in advance and make a schedule to catch your favorite acts.

Accommodation Fills Up Quickly

Hotels, short-lets, and Airbnb options get fully booked during December. Choose a location close to your preferred activities, such as Victoria Island, Lekki, or Ikeja, to avoid traffic. Confirm your booking early to secure a good place.

Be Ready for Lagos Traffic (and Flexibility)

Lagos traffic can be intense, especially during the festive season. Use ride-hailing apps like Uber and Bolt, but allow extra time for travel between events. Alternatively, plan multiple activities in the same area to save time. There is also the new Lagos metro line service to help ease movement between the Island and the Mainland

Prepare for Fun and Cultural Immersion

Lagos is more than just nightlife—experience its lively culture during the day. Visit landmarks like the National Museum, Nike Art Gallery, or Tarkwa Bay Beach. Indulge in Nigerian cuisine such as jollof rice, suya, and small chops. It’s all part of the Detty December vibe!

Embrace Nigerian Food and Culture

Detty December is also about immersing yourself in Nigerian culture. Try local dishes like jollof rice, suya, and pepper soup at top spots. Visit art galleries, craft markets, or cultural landmarks like Nike Art Gallery or Freedom Park during the day for a balanced experience.

Will Funke Akindele's Everybody Loves Jenifa Break The Nollywood UK Release Box Office Record at £96K?

2024-12-06T20:08:00.000-08:00

Funke Akindele has solidified her position as one of the most bankable actors and producers in Nollywood, consistently delivering record-breaking hits. Three of her films—A Tribe Called Judah, Battle on Buka Street, and Omo Ghetto: The Saga—dominate the top three spots of the highest-grossing Nigerian films in cinemas. Her last release, A Tribe Called Judah, not only raked in a staggering 1.4 billion Naira in Nigerian cinemas but also grossed £88,000 in the UK, earning the title of the second-highest-grossing Nollywood film in the UK after Wedding Party 2, which holds the record with £96,000.

This December, Funke is back with her much-anticipated film Everybody Loves Jenifa. The film will premiere on Friday 13th in Lagos, Nigeria, and is set to hit UK cinemas on December 20, 2024. With screenings lined up in major chains like Odeon, Vue, and Cineworld Cinemas, excitement is already at an all-time high. Advance tickets for the premiere are nearly sold out, signaling another potential blockbuster in the making for the Nollywood superstar. Everybody Loves Jenifa will be released in 30 countries across 6 continents through Nile Entertainment

The big question on everyone’s mind is whether Everybody Loves Jenifa will surpass the £96,000 benchmark set by Wedding Party 2 to become the highest-grossing Nollywood film ever released in the UK. With Funke’s proven track record and the massive anticipation surrounding the film, all eyes are on the box office numbers as the UK release date draws closer.

Everybody Loves Jenifa is shaping up to be another blockbuster hit! With its early release date, the power of the beloved Jenifa brand, and a star-studded cast featuring Nancy Isime, Patience Ozokwor, Jackie Appiah, Bisola Aiyeola, and Falz, the film promises unforgettable entertainment. Backed by exceptional marketing and a catchy Christmas carol, it’s set to break box office records this holiday season.

CHRISTMAS CAROL

Funke Akindele’s consistent success showcases the growing global appeal of Nollywood films and the rising demand for African storytelling in international markets. As the countdown begins to the UK release, one thing is certain—Funke’s Everybody Loves Jenifa is poised to captivate audiences and potentially rewrite history in Nollywood’s growing international box office journey.

Septimus was a former football player at Charlton Athletic Academy from the age of 10 until he was 15. However at the age of 15 he suffered from a heart problem that prevented him from playing football. In September 2014, Septimus became the head of charity called PL9, a charity made in memory of a 16 year old boy called Phillip Lamin who had died whilst playing football due to heart failure. The charity has since raised over 10,000 pounds through fundraisers and events, in which some were led by Septimus Prime. ABOUT RADICAL 77

Olabode Olaonipekun Osoba popularly known as Radical77 is a Nigerian musician based in the United Kingdom. The artiste who is comfortable singing or rapping was born and raised in Lagos Nigeria before choosing to relocate to the United Kingdom to continue his studies as a teenager. After studying at the University of Greenwich and earning a degree in Counselling/Psychology, Radical77 decided to leave his professional career behind for his first love and true calling, a career in music. Following his huge decision to follow his dream, Radical77 found the first few years in the music industry a bit tough, in his own words he said ‘’ I was trying to find my sound and ultimately myself, I hung around the wrong crowd and became somewhat lost in a different world’’. Although Radical had taken a different path, his love for his music and more importantly his father brought him back on track leading him to fuse his Counselling degree with his music by writing inspirational lyrics and producing uplifting sounds.

In recent years Radical77 added motivational speaking into his repertoire, proudly speaking at young boys/girls clubs as well as attending schools inspiring kids to stay away from gangs and a life of crime. With continuous work in the studio, Radical77 released his first official single “Ko ni lo le” followed by ‘’Aje’’ in 2011 , with visuals for ‘’Aje’’ shot partly in Nigeria and the United Kingdom, it officially launched Radical77 into the music game with critics and fans paying attention to his infectious vocals and inspiring lyrics. He soon took some time off releasing songs to become a full-time carer for his very ill dad, Radical77 said this in a recent interview ‘’my father is my inspiration, he is the reason I strive to be a better person and want to be a role model to young kids who perhaps have been lost. Being the sole career for my ill dad was a duty I took on with the most pride and I always felt like it was my duty as a son to him, my father taught me everything I know and he is my number one fan.” Returning to his music career fully, Radical said all my focus is now solely on my career and it’s time to ensure my fans get what they deserve from me and music lovers will get more of what I’m known for.

Keeping true to his words, Radical77 finished 2014 the way he started 2015 by releasing two singles in ‘’Tabolo’’ and most recently his new and already critically acclaimed banger ‘’Black Gold’’ produced by prolific Afrobeats producer Oy Beatz. Black Gold taken off his yet to be released EP ‘’Number 1’’ is a song that Radical77 wrote to celebrate who he calls ‘’a special woman/person in one’s life. It emphasizes the two strong components in an African man’s life, Black ( skin complexion/race) and Gold ( business, finances and security). And these words were used to celebrate that special person’’. When asked if he had a special someone in his life, with a smile on his face Radical77 simply said ‘’Black Gold’’ says it all so please listen to it, you will find your answers there’’.

With a signature Oy up tempo beat and a well laced Radical77 vocals, Black Gold is a rare but great mixture of Afrobeats and soul music that gets the party started putting listeners in a celebratory mood. Without doubt Radical77 is back with a big bang and ‘’Black Gold’’ is one for all playlists.

So wait no longer, press play and enjoy Radical77 at his finest in ‘’Black Gold’’

Best African Act category at MOBO not televised - My take on it - DJ ABASS

2014-10-23T00:55:00.000-07:00

Twitter went agog yesterday with anger in certain quarters - the African quarter! Why? The Best African act category at this years edition of the MOBO Awards (Music Of Black Origin) which was deservedly won by Fuse ODG was not included in the live broadcast.... and my people are angry!!! And i ask why? If the organisers of the MOBOS do not deem it proper to include the African category in its live broadcast, why do African acts deem it right to accept the award?

More after cut..

In 1989, Will Smith, Dj Jazzy Jeff, LL Cool J, Salt n Pepa and Kid n Play all boycotted the Grammys after finding out the award show won't be airing hip-hop acceptance speeches. Jay-Z boycotted the Grammy in 1999 and in 2002. Today, Hip-Hop is the biggest Urban genre worldwide and the biggest money spinner too.

JAZZY JEFF & WILL SMITH

So if MOBO Awards (Music Of Black Origin) would rather present the Best African Act with his award backstage or in the car park instead of live on stage, it's obvious they can't smell the coffee. It's a numbers game in this our game - take away African numbers and lets see if it will have an effect. It's not enough for us to be blaming MOBO Awards, when you feel aggrieved you take a stand. I hear that Reggae, Gospel and Jazz categories were also not broadcast live. O ga o!!

JAMIE OLIVER's Jollof Rice

Just last week Jamie Oliver prepared his version of Jollof Rice and posted the recipe on his page. Smart guy! That's recognition of the ground swell of interest in everything African. His version to be honest didnt look anything like traditional Jollof but hey, at least he dey smell the coffee. Africa is the new frontier on all levels - fashion, food, and surely MUSIC.

So enough of the complaints - take a stand.. and lets see if they won't change!!! Good morning my people!!

Why i disagree with MTV Base Africa's Top 20 Greatest Nigerian Songs Of All Time list - DJ ABASS

2014-10-04T04:22:00.002-07:00

MTV base Africa recently released its list of Top 20 Greatest Nigerian Songs Of All Time. However, what it should have tagged it is MTV Base Africa's Top 20 Greatest Nigerian Songs Of The Last 9 years. The oldest song on its list is 2Face's African Queen released in 2006 and the most recent song is Surulere by Dr Sid which was released in 2013. That's a seven year window for all the songs on its list. Read more after cut

It is noteworthy that MTV Base Africa was created in 2005 (9yrs ago) so it is safe to assume that it has arrived at its list based on viewing and listening figures generated from its database of airplays and charts since that period. This makes it plausible for MTV Base Africa to release a chart of the biggest Nigerian songs on its platform within that period - after all its the MTV Base list ... but certainly not OF ALL TIME!!!

I've had numerous debates over the years with DJs and industry heads on songs that would make my Top 20 Greatest Nigerian songs of all time and number one for me remains Nico Mbarga's Sweet Mother, a hit that has sold well over 13 million copies. Other songs come to mind - Fela Kuti's Lady, Majek Fashek's Send Down The Rain, Sir Shina Peters' Ace and 2Face's African Queen. Opinions would always differ on such a very controversial subject but the generality would not argue with some inclusions.

Now, looking at MTV Base's Top 20 of the last 9 years, i'm amazed that Iyanya's Kukere did not make the list. That was a monster hit all over Africa. I'm sure some of you out there would perhaps question how some songs made the list. But hey, it's the MTV Base Africa list. I wouldn't complain about it. Perhaps this is the catalyst needed to get the debate going. I look forward to various Nigerian media and music organisations coming up with their own list(s). Now that should be interesting.
