Bamboo – a Most Enchanting Ingredient

Often times, most of we desire or need in life is right before our eyes. All that we need to do is to pause from time to time and appreciate the form they come in. Perhaps the same can be said of home furnishings and furniture. While many interior decorator continue to mimic nature and pass them off as miracles, some take a more biological approach. They simply look at nature to understand how things really work. Only ingredients found in the body or from the surrounding environment are used. Of late the humble bamboo has been stirring up quite a storm in the global interior scene. Described as flexible, hearty and strong, it is a fast-growing grass that is highly renewable.

If you did not already know, bamboo can grow up to 1 – 3 feet per day and has infinite potential. Bamboo is one of the most sustainable plants. Bamboo also absorbs four times more carbon dioxide than any other plant, making it a seemingly potent partner in curtailing global warming.

In fact, there was a movement led by a man by the name of LeMire aka ‘Bamboo Brother’. He was on a mission to shift global consciousness via the bamboo stick. He reportedly drove around LA in a natural gas-powered GMC decorated with bamboo. On his website, he described bamboo as a powerful healer for the planet.

Bamboo also contains germanium, a highly effective antiviral. When attacked by viruses, a bamboo plant secretes germanium to protect itself. Germanium extract from bamboo and ginseng are used in Traditional Chinese medicine to treat immune deficiency illnesses. The medical applications of bamboo are too many to enumerate, yet the strength of the bamboo itself is also known one of the best.

Bamboo forms a very hard wood, especially when seasoned, and is light and exceptionally tough. This makes it useful for many things such as houses (in tropical climates area), fences, bridges, canoes, furniture, construction scaffolding, and various musical instruments. Modern companies are attempting to popularize bamboo flooring made of bamboo pieces steamed, flattened, glued together, finished and cut. However, bamboo wood is easily infested by wood-boring insects unless treated with wood preservatives or kept very dry. It has also been used as a substitute for steel reinforcing rods is concrete construction.

When bamboo is harvested for wood, care is needed to select mature stems that are several years old, as first-year stems, although full size, are not fully woody and are not strong.
