New Year Greetings and New Quality Directories List

Well, new year new opportunities. I don't know about you but the future is so disappointing. Perhaps I watched too much Space 1999 or Star Wars when I was a kid, but I was hoping that by 2010 we'd all be zooming around our cosmo/metro hubs on hover craft or that all meals would be condensed into one handy pill.

Still, at least we have the freak show commonly known as the internet.

I don't spend too much time hanging around this neighbourhood any more as I'm busy elsewhere. You'll more likely to find me on my web design blog at Suburban Glory.

New Quality Directories List - October 2009

Here's November's picks coming at you and what a pathetic bunch new directories are this month. The six below are the only decent ones I could find. This is probably the worst month so far.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

15 Website Showcase SitesTo Submit To

Being published on a design showcase site is a great way to launch a new application.

All the websites on this list scream QUALITY! from every angle and to be featured in their showcase will result in lots of extra traffic and a great incoming link.

Many of them have thousands of subscribers to their feed.

As you'll see though from published submissions, they only publish the top division of web design; and although they nearly all have CSS in their title all featured sites are graphic heavy.

A lot of these websites give new featured sites a direct link from their homepage with many of these having a PageRank of 5 or more.

Complete List of Dofollow Social Bookmarking Sites Part One

Wow, this was a hard article to write because there are so few social bookmarking websites left that don't use the nofollow attribute or use redirects.

Sites like Mister Wong and Bidsonomy have flipped to nofollow, while others such as Furl and myVmarks just don't exist anymore.

In many ways it's not really surprising as their indexes were filled with spam.

I looked at a number of dofollow social bookmarking lists that can be found via Google - but consider all of them to be out of date.

10 Dofollow Article Directories

There are loads of article directories out there but many of the key ones now use nofollow. Considering that they are editorially approved then this is pretty lame on their part really.

However, I do appreciate that monitoring links is extra work and that these type of sites are inundated with submissions, many of which are poorly written and need of revision (or binning).

Below are 10 article directories that still allow "dofollow" links.

I would recommend that you read their author guidelines before you submit an item. Make sure too that you take your full quote of allowed links but as a word of advice don't create multiple links to the same page; spread them across multiple pages.

Do these sites provide any link juice value? Perhaps they do but a site like Ezine has millions of published articles. Everybody uses them now.

I have a pattern of submitting to Ezine first and then submitting the same articles to Isnare and Article Dashboard. I never or rarely submit to any others. Google is very good at detecting duplicate content and I could change the title and text for every different article directory but I really don't have the time or the patience.

I've examined these article directories as so: The year the site was created; the exact number of pages indexed in Google; the number of backlinks to the domain as recorded by Yahoo; the Google PageRank of the homepage; Quantcast data, if any; Alexa rank and submission rules.

I personally don't like GoArticles as submissions are not editorially approved before publication. Admittedly they have lots of "report as spam" buttons on the site where users can flag a dodgy item, but I would prefer to be associated with an article directory that had tough guidelines - and enforced them. Also GoArticles is a part of Jayde Online, Inc so you'll probably be spammed to death with their newsletter once they get their hands on your email address.

Andy Beard Goes Nofollow

It's not often that I visit Andy Beardâ€™s blog, but browsing through his latest entries yesterday I flipped on my NoDoFollow Firefox plugin and was surprised to see outgoing comment links highlighted in red.

I then checked the comments of several other articles and they were all using the nofollow microformat.

I don't usually make an issue about bloggers switching over from â€œdofollowâ€ to nofollow, but Andy Beard was once the King of DoFollow â€“ the Pied Piper that lead a host of other bloggers down his well-publicized path and received a great deal of attention for doing so. Andy using nofollow is kind of like the Pope using condoms.

Surprised, I presumed that he had forgotten to switch on a Wordpress plugin after upgrading.

But no, it's true â€“ Beardy has flipped to the nofollow side about one month ago. He states:

Matt Cutts in the same post highlighted again who you link to matters, and I think Google is going to place more and more emphasis on this. It is a lot of work for the average blogger to keep control of user generated content, and even the best comments sometimes come with spammy links. I have always maintained that "dofollow" isn't for everyone because of the time commitment.

Back in 2007 Andy was probably the leading internet â€œdofollowâ€ evangelist, and even today his post Ultimate List of DoFollow & Nofollow Plugins still remains a good starting point for bloggers seeking to remove nofollow.

He even set up a site on Bumpzee, No Nofollow | I Follow | DoFollow Community; but which now seems to be dead, and as recently as June 3 he was claiming that his blog is dofollow

I think the biggest gain is in community

* I don't have to write all the content myself, my readers contribute and gain a small reward
* What happens when you engage a community of linkerati? They link to you more often

* The tools are keyword based - people with websites covering a specific topic visit your site - maybe initially to just drop links, but it is amazing how many can be converted to regular visitors who leave constructive comments, and link to you from their own sites

I regard this as a niche based on the philosophical idea that commenters give value to a blog, provide great content and are part of your community. As such it is great to reward them for commenting on your blog in a simple way, showing them respect by not sticking NoFollow on their links, and likewise providing a link back when they link to a post and use trackback / pingback..

Actually, rereading his past articles on the subject in detail it is apparent that Andy is too intelligent to give any grand and outlandish statements on the merits of removing nofollow. He has always been open about the potential pitfalls for â€œdofollowâ€ webmasters and makes the repeated claim that it â€œisnâ€™t for everyoneâ€.

A clean out of the index and a new layout for the frontpage

I thought it was about time that I swept my administrator broom through the "dofollow" directory and removed dead sites and those that have flipped to the nofollow side.

I've removed about one quarter to a third of all listed websites.

I've also organised a new frontpage that places this blog preponderantly in the centre of the site rather than as an attachment to the directory.

There'll be more articles in the coming months!

New Quality Directories List - August 2009

Well it's that time of the month again and here are the best of the new free and paid directories.

I've searched through their indexes to verify their editorial policy and to make sure that they are not linking to notorious neighbourhoods in the gambling, porn or pharmaceutical industries.

As a tip when you submit to directories make sure that you vary your keywords in the title and don't use the same description all the time. Google hates duplicate content so I pre-write ten different descriptions of a couple of sentences each for every website I submit. Directory owners prefer this too as it gives them unique(ish) content.
