What is Gold Really Worth?

“All the gold which is under or upon the earth is not enough to give in exchange for virtue.” -- Plato

Gold! Just the word generates a tension of excitement, of expectation, of…wealth!

Before the 1970's, gold was worth ~$40 - $50 dollars/troy ounce (that is, ~1 euro per gram), but since then, the price has fluctuated wildly with economic speculation and the swings in the stock market. The price of gold today is ~$1710/troy ounce (more than 40 euros a gram). This is up nearly $100 from a just year ago, and the rise in gold prices is literally off the chart.

What, essentially, is gold really worth to us?

Whether gold can be mined is based on its current price in the global market place and on the environmental conditions where it is found. The value of gold as placer deposits depends on how pure the gold is – copper and silver are contained along with the gold. However, no matter what the worth of gold, if it is found deep in the ocean, at impenetrable depths in the earth's crust, or in a locality where mining may endanger human population or archeological and environmental treasures of invaluable worth, the cost of mining can surpass the worth of the gold ore.

Gold is one of the earliest metals mined by humankind because, though relatively scarce, it’s easy enough to find among stream deposits, easy to shape into lovely forms, never loses its shine or luster – it’s pretty, let’s face it.

For one of our ancient ancestors, finding a pretty pebble in the river was great, but what was its real use? Gold is too soft and there’s too little around to make an arrowhead. In terms of real value, stones such as obsidian or plagiogranite could be used in making spear points and axes; on a survival level, these would apparently be worth a lot more than a pretty little pebble. Obsidian from the Milos Island volcano was traded throughout the Aegean by Neolithic cultures; possibly it was used as a kind of currency. Natural (native) metallic copper or iron is even more scarce than gold, and would have been much more useful to our Neolithic ancestor had he/she found any; not until the Bronze and Iron Ages were there technical means for transforming ores of copper or iron into useful metals. By then, the loveliest of metals, gold, was already more highly prized than either as jewelry and used as a portable currency.

Had some Neolithic person not come across a gold nugget and thought it looked really keen, would we today prize gold so dearly? Other than being pretty, what is gold good for?

Gold is used as money, or at least, it once was. Being heavy (a standard gold bar weighs nearly 12.5 kg) and awkward to weigh precisely with each expenditure, paper money was invented to keep track of how much gold someone actually had in a bank somewhere. This lead to gold being hoarded as bullion: nearly 150 million ounces alone are kept in Fort Knox. In this sense, gold was used to give worth to paper money, except that it doesn’t seeing as there is no longer a gold standard (the USA went off the gold standard completely in 1971). As bullion, gold is kept around to gather dust but not actually utilized for anything.

78% of all gold today is used in jewelry. Jewelry is not, probably, essential to our health and survival. Gold is not even essential to jewelry: a leather thong and carved shell can be nice looking as well. If push comes to shove, we can live without jewelry.

Gold, flaked out into thin gold leaf, is used as a decoration, and some is used to add color to decorative glass objects. Yes, the “pretty factor” of gold again, but not a use critical to our survival. Well, there are reports that some eastern cultures believe eating small quantities of gold leaf or gold dust is good for them, though eating too much is toxic.

In part because it’s toxic, gold is included in the arsenal of drugs that fight cancer. Other medicines that contain gold are used to treat the symptoms of immune diseases including several kinds or arthritis. Because these auriferous drugs are not effective on everyone, there are alternative non-gold-bearing drugs as well.

Until about the 1970’s, gold was commonly used in dentistry. Then as its price started to go up, various kinds of composites and ceramics were developed that could replace it. Poor gold! Not essential.

Let’s enter the modern age; let’s consider in what ways the essential properties of gold as a material make it actually invaluable to us.

Gold is not just pretty because of some fortuitous condition; it is pretty and remains pretty because it is inert, very dense, and it lasts forever. The nuclei of gold atoms are surrounded by an impenetrable array of electrons; these give gold a wondrous sensitivity to electricity so that it can conduct just the slight amounts needed in solid state devices. Golden molecules are themselves so “hard” (a nice cubic crystal structure) that they don’t even bond well with other gold atoms: hence, en masse they can “slide” around and be worked into thin, malleable sheets. But these molecular collections do form alloys (molecular mixes) that change the properties of pure gold in useful ways (like making gold dental work harder by the addition of copper). Gold cannot be destroyed; it does not tarnish, it conducts electricity, it is malleable so that it can be made to fit anywhere – anywhere that a material is needed that can’t be lubricated, that will not corrode, where the transmission of very low amounts of current are essential and where a little rust would shut down the system entirely.

Finally! Thousands of years after that ancestor of ours picked up a pretty pebble, gold is worth something other than just being pretty. It’s essential in your laptop, your cell phone, televisions, your GPS and in the satellites that allow us to have GPS. We can live without jewelry or bullion, but in the modern electronic world, we can’t survive without GOLD!

I am not blaming every organisation but some of the figures are always bit unrealistic. No woman feels safe to travel after dark? well if that would have been the case India would be been a living hell. Some incidents happen in NCR and few other places but majority of India is safe for women. Also it also shows more and more woman in India have started working its up to us to look at it. We can take positives from it or negatives. Again on one hand you are saying 130 million people have no basic health care and on the other hand you say corruption is rampant so pays the money? stats show 60% of population is under 25 show that means only 20-25% people are corrupt though thats a lot but when you look at Indias population its still pretty low.

Even the legend himself sir Donald bradman retired inspite of him knowing that he was just 4 runs short of the greatest milestone in cricket. He laid an example of true sportsmanship by retiring at the peak of his career & by giving opportunity to other young players to play. By doing this he showed that no player is bigger than the game. With deep regret I have to say that Sachin lacks this kind of temperament & maturity. He should have retired long back when his peak time was over. He is just staying there as a non performer so that he continues to get endorsements & limelight.

വിവാഹം ഒരാളുടെ ജീവിതത്തിലെ നിസാര കാര്യമാണ് പക്ഷെ പങ്കാളിയുടെ മുഖസൌന്ദര്യത്തെയോ ശരീരപ്രകൃതിയോ ഇത്ര കാര്യമാക്കെണോ സുഹൃത്തുക്കളേ.. ഏത് സമയവും സംഭവിക്കാവുന്ന ഒരു ചെറിയ അപകടം, ഒരു രോഗം ഇത് മതി ഇതെല്ലം തീരാന്‍.. ഇനി ഇതൊന്നും ഇല്ലെങ്കില്‍ തന്നെ ഒരു അഞ്ചോ പത്തോ വര്‍ഷം കഴിയുമ്പോള്‍ ഈ സൌന്ദര്യം എല്ലാം എവിടെയോ പോയി മറയും.. ഉള്ളില്‍ മനുഷ്യന്‍റെ മനസ്സും വെച്ച് സുന്ദരന്മാരായി നടക്കുന്നവരെക്കാള്‍ എത്രയോ നല്ലതാണു നല്ല മനസ്സുള്ള വ്യക്തി, അതുകൊണ്ട് തന്നെ വെറും ഒരു ഫോട്ടോ കണ്ടിട്ട് ഒരാളെ വിലയിരുത്തണോ.. എല്ലാവരും ആശംസകള്‍ കോരിച്ചൊരിഞ്ഞ എത്രയോ സുന്ദരന്മാരുടെയും സുന്ദരിമാരുടെയും വിവാഹങ്ങള്‍ ചീട്ടു കൊട്ടാരം പോലെ പോട്ടിത്തകര്‍ന്നത്‌ നമ്മള്‍ കണ്ടതാണ്..

ഈ ഒരു ദുഷിച്ച ചിന്താഗതിക്ക് വളം വെച്ചു കൊടുത്തത് തോന്ന്യവാസം ഭാഗമായിട്ടുള്ള സിനിമ മേഖല തന്നെയാണ്.. കാരണം സിനിമകളില്‍ എപ്പോഴും ഭാര്യാഭര്‍ത്താക്കന്മാര്‍ തുല്ല്യ സൌന്ദ്യര്യമുള്ളവരായിരിക്കുമല്ലോ. രണ്ടു നായികമാരുണ്ടെങ്കില്‍ അവരില്‍ തരതമ്യേന സൌന്ദര്യം കുറഞ്ഞവളെ സഹനടനു കെട്ടിച്ചു കൊടുക്കുകയും ചെയ്യം. സിനിമ ഒരു സമൂഹത്തെ എങ്ങിനെ പ്രതികൂലമായി സ്വാധീനിക്കും എന്നതിന്‍റെ ഒരു ഉത്തമ ഉദാഹരണം കൂടിയാണ് ഇത്.

പിന്നെ ഈ കളിയാക്കുന്നവര്‍ എല്ലാം അതീവ സുന്ദരന്മാരും സുന്ദരിമാരും ആണന്ന വിശ്വാസത്തിലാണ് ഞാന്‍ ഇതെഴുതുന്നത്.. അങ്ങനെ തന്നെ ആയിരിക്കുമല്ലേ?

Revealed: Shocking satellite images of lakes show extent of man's impact on world's water supply

These dramatic before-and-after satellite photos show the terrifying effect man is having on the world's resources.

Taken over nearly 40 years, photographs show the drying up of several bodies of water around the world - receding as mankind's demand for water grows.

Included in the shocking collection is the once mighty Aral Sea in Central Asia.

The expanse of water, like several others across the globe, has been reduced to worryingly sparse levels. In April the situation at the Aral Sea was described as 'one of the planet's worst environmental disasters' by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.

Shown here in images taken from space between 1973 and 2009, slowly but surely the Aral - in fact a salt water lake - has shrunk from being the size of Ireland to a cluster of contaminated ponds.

An inland lake, the Aral is found between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan and used to be the fourth largest lake in the world. Since the 1960s, it has lost more than half of its volume.

The drying is due to overuse of the lake's feeder rivers. In the 1960s the former Soviet Union diverted the Syr Darya and Amu Darya for the irrigation of cotton and paddy fields.

Now 50 years later the water is at a dismal 10 per cent of its level when the projects first began.

So great was the impact on the region the local climate was thought to have changed and pollution has risen to dangerous levels.

The destruction of the lake has also decimated the local fishing industry, causing severe knock-on unemployment and further economic woe for the people living around it.

Across the globe once rich and fertile lands are facing the same catastrophe.

Arid and desolate Iraq was once a green, lush environment even reputed to be the setting of the Garden of Eden.

Seen from above between 1973 and 2000 the Mesopotamia marshlands straddle the borders between Iraq and Iran near the mighty Tigris and Euphrates rivers.

The marshes were systematically drained in the mid- to late 20th century. This was done to provide agricultural land, but also to destroy the habitat of the Shi'a Muslim Marsh Arabs, who were persecuted by the Iraqi ruling Ba'athist Party.

Also included in the before-and-after pictures are the Toshka Lakes, in southern Egypt.

They were formed in the 1990s by diverting water from Lake Nasser, an artificial lake formed behind the Aswan High Dam on the river Nile.

The region was planned to be a major new agricultural and industrial site for Egypt. But as these images show, the region is drying fast.

One image taken in March 2001, shows the lakes near their maximum capacity. A later satellite picture from December 2005 shows how the waters receded due to drought and rising demand for water, leaving a ring of brown wetlands around the edges of the lakes.

Lake Chad, located in the Sahel region near the Sahara, was the fourth largest lake in Africa in the 1960s and had an area of more than 10,000 square miles.

But by the 21st century it had shrunk to less than 600 square miles - around a twentieth of its size. This was caused by increased use of irrigation combined with severe droughts.

The Toshka Lakes in southern Egypt were formed in the 1990s by diverting water from Lake Nasser, an artificial lake that formed behind the Aswan High Dam on the river Nile.

The region was planned to be a major new agricultural and industrial site for Egypt but as these images show - between 2001 and 2005 - the region is drying fast.

The waters have receded, leaving a ring of brown wetlands around the edges of the lakes, because of drought and a rising demand for water in the area.

Dr Benjamin Lloyd-Hughes of the Walker Institute for climate system research, University of Reading, said: 'Ultimately the disaster seen at the Aral Sea and the marshes are the combined effects of man and rising temperatures in those regions.

'There has not been much change in rainfall in those areas but the temperature has risen by over 1 degree Centigrade since 1970, which will have enhanced losses due to evaporation.

'Pollution in the area will have become worse because as the water evaporates, pollutants in the water become more concentrated and less diluted.'

At Lake Chad and the Toshka Lakes the same effect of man in combination with climate change has been observed.

Dr Lloyd-Hughes added: 'There has been a 30% reduction in annual rainfall since 1900 in these regions but not a significant change in temperature.

'Reductions in lake levels here seem to driven by reductions in rainfall rather than increased evaporation.

'The outlook is that there will be no change in rainfall but temperature could increase by another two degrees Centigrade by 2100. This is not good but not so bad as for the Aral Sea and Mesopotamia.

'Global warming is a problem that is happening everywhere but if drought is happening in your region then it is a far greater problem.'

With the growth of mass-agriculture to feed a severely ballooning global population, water demand has begun to perilously outstrip supply, making disasters like the Aral Sea a grim and alarming likelihood for the future.
