Finding Havana

2011-01-09T18:20:00.000-08:00

Finding Havana ~ Buscando Habana

I have had the good fortune to visit Havana and Varadero, Cuba almost every year for the past 20 years. I consider myself an adopted Cuban and so do my Cuban friends. My Godmother who happens to be the local Santaria Bruja is the main reason why I travel to the dangerous neighborhood of Buena Vista. At the ripe young age of 80, she dispells her wisdom and common sense through her practice and is extremely well respected in the village. (Yes, Buena Vista Social Club members lived here where many songs about poverty and struggle are inspired by this particular barillo*).

Time has stood still for over 52 years with the Embargo and alongside Fidel Castro, 1957 chevrolets are surviving the test of time with modified Toyota Corola and Lada engines...seriously you need to check under the hood to find that out. I was fortunate enough to embark on a day trip from Varadero to Havana with my travelling partners in a 1958 Chevrolet owned by a local Taxi driver, named Gustavo. Good sense has it that you plan ahead and double check that your vehicle is in tip top shape. If you are a tourist, I do not recommend being reckless unless you speak the language somewhat and have enough money in the eventuality that something might go wrong. Because Murphy's law in Cuba is typically stated as: "Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong". If you can accept this statement, you will have no problems in Cuba. That said, we embarked on our adventure with Gustavo in his pimped up Chevrolet and with salty wind in our hair we left Varadero Beach and headed to the Capital. Estimated time of arrival was 2 hours with one stop half way for "cafe cubano and pasteles".

And what do you think happened? The inevitable. We ended up stalling half way in the middle of nowhere among miles of plantain and aloe vera farms and smack in front of the Military School that was apparently not open to the public and uncooperative to our unfortunate breakdown. Not an ideal situation but nonetheless, we were on an adventure. After several cellular calls (1 hour) to Gustavo's mechanic who guided him, Gustavo tightened up the pistons and thanked the Orishas (Santeria Gods) for saving him. He also thanked my tattooed arm: Esperanza; Hope! I was thankful too that we could continue on this road trip as I really wanted to dive into the magic of finding Havana again.

We sang and jiggled in the antique Chevy with its non-existant shocks and in no time arrived in Old Havana. Havana smells and feels as alive and grunge as you can imagine it. Cubans have no complexes and share their family problems in very loud arguements, laundry and entertain from their balconies or on the narrow stone cobbled streets. Doors, windows ( the lucky few who have glass) , balconies and backyard entrances are wide-open. There are no secrets in Havana. Finding a quiet place to be alone is hard and pretty non-existant in Havana Centro. Perhaps it's why the Tourist resorts are 2 hours away in gated cities. Every bar, street merchant, museum and local artist, coffee shop has Cuban music blaring. Even more astounding, I got to see Buena Vista Social Club perform free at a popular pub on Calle Obispo. Another surprise of our day trip, we ran into local artists at an art exhibit: Luis Lamothe, Francisco Gordillo, Ulises Morales, Lamadrid and Ibrahim Rodriguez sketched in my sketchbook that will tour the United States Art Libraries in March 2011 and this sketchbook will end up in the permanent collection at the Brooklyn Art Library in New York. Ironically, Cuban art is appreciated mostly on the island and because of the embargo, Americans do not have the opportunity to visit this enchanting island. I would like to think that this serendipitous encounter was for me to share the artworks of these talented artists with the rest of the world and bridge the gap.

So with the smell of sweet cigars and the sweetness of a freshly made mojito, I hope that you enjoy the photos and that if ever you get the chance to travel to Havana, Varadero or any city in Cuba, you'll remember this proverb from a famous song by defunct Cuban born singer Celia Cruz: "La vida te da sorpresas, Sorpresas te da la vida. Ahi na'ma". Life gives you surprises, Surprises give you life. This is it"!

ABAD-GYPSY-KALI / A Random Buskerfilm

2010-11-10T13:38:00.000-08:00

A BOOK ABOUT DEATH - GYPSY - KALI is an interpretive art video film depicting death, love lost, gypsy and Kali ceremonial rituals. Betty Esperanza is a multi media artist exploring her "Gypsy Harlem" roots.

This performance art film aired at the NIGHT OF THE LIVING FLUXUS OPENING for RAY JOHNSON & A BOOK ABOUT DEATH EXHIBITION at SAL Gallery, C.W.Post Campus of Long Island University, New York on November 3, 2010.
Gypsy Esperanza travelled from Montreal, Quebec to perform an "Ofrenda to the DEAD" ritual as well as exhibit her piece " Gypsies Never die or lie" amongst artists from all over the world. Esperanza was also in the original ABAD Exhibit in Soho, NY in 2009 at The Emily Harvey Foundation.

Gypsies Never Die or Lie is A Fluxus Gypsy Series by Betty Esperanza featuring a video Gypsy-Kali- ABAD presentation and Honor the Dead and Living ceremonial rite on opening night November 3, 2010 - 5pm at SAL Art Gallery in New York. Click here to view invite: Invitation to RAYJ & ABAD NIGHT OF THE LIVING FLUXUS

"RAY JOHNSON AND A BOOK ABOUT DEATH" is a new exhibition that will, for the first time, feature a copy of the original 1955 ABAD project by American artist Ray Johnson (1927-1995)–the inspiration for this entire series of exhibitions. It will set the stage for all (see video) 485 cards from the original Emily Harvey Gallery exhibit together with new submissions created especially for this show.

Ray Johnson’s unbound book of the same title was mailed to his New York Correspondence School students and included pages in his idiosyncratic style that were funny, sad and ironic “one-page essays” on death.

Also included in the exhibition for the first time is Abalcabal, a new artists' zine and Seeking KALI that was created shortly after the original show in NY. It is loosely associated with Fluxus and the Mail Art movement and is yet another beautiful and inspiring result of A Book About Death.

WHY IS THIS EXHIBIT HAPPENING AT C.W. POST CAMPUS of LIU?
Ray Johnson lived nearby in Locust Valley and was a frequent visitor to Hillwood Art Museum. He was a good friend of many artists who taught there and did many performance works on campus. Several art alumni of Long Island University were contributors to the original New York City ABAD project and would like other artists to become part of the rich worldwide art community that has grown up around the project.

FLUXFACE IN SPACE - NASA MISSION STS -133 LIFTOFF Postponed until February 24, 2011

2010-08-01T22:07:00.000-07:00

We have countdown for Space Shuttle Mission STS-133. After months of delays, Discovery is scheduled to launch on Thursday February 24, 2011 at 4:50 PM EST. Hopefully this time we will get off the ground and our orbital art exhibit will become a reality.

Gary A. Bibb in collaboration with Cecil Touchon have conceived an exciting new exhibition project for the Fluxmuseum. Using the Face In Space Program from NASA - they are organizing a "Fluxface in Space" exhibition to be launched into orbit on the last two Space Shuttles! These final missions will include a rendezvous with the International Space Station. Shuttle "Discovery" wil be retired after her last mission.

Artists were to create one original postcard sized work of art in any media (preferably collage/ photo-montage) with the themes of Space Exploration & the Arts, the Shuttle Program, Outer Space, Rockets, Astronauts, Astronomy etc. This will be a commemorative project around the fact that the Space Shuttle program is coming to an end after these last two flights.
BENUDE Media is # 100 among the artists who have been commissioned to submit their out-of-the-box vision of SPACE.
