Poppy works with iPhone 4, 4S, iPhone 5 and the fifth generation iPod Touch. You put your phone in and Poppy’s mirrors capture two stereographic images using your iPhone’s single camera. When you look in the viewfinder, Poppy’s lenses combine the two video streams into a single, crisp, 3D video. It doesn’t need batteries and there are no electronics. There is really no better way to learn a new skill than by doing. So, while it might feel like you are being “thrown into the fire,” trust me. This is the fastest way for you to quickly become a top web designer.

I recommend you find a real project to work on to build your first website. The easiest way to do this is to approach someone you know and simply ask them if they would be your test subject for your first project. You would do this pro bono, most likely, but you could charge a modest fee.

Just let them know that you’re taking a training course and need a real business to work with for your project. At the end of the project, if they like the website it is theirs to keep at no cost.

The big benefit to the business owner is the knowledge they will gain about how to improve their website to make more money. Yes, you can deliver pretty amazing results as a complete rookie, if you follow this bootcamp closely.

Here are a few more pointers to make sure your projects run smoothly. You can pretty much follow these same guidelines for your first project.

Carefully selecting your clients and the projects you want to work on.

This is where most designers and developers make their first mistake. Way before you even take on a new project you can set yourself up for failure or success. This begins with selecting the right projects and clients.

I am always looking for the right opportunities. This means I carefully select the right clients. It doesn’t always work out, but here are some of my criteria.

A. Select an established business. It is much easier to step in and improve upon an existing business than to help start one from scratch. Also, start-ups are often on a tight budget and will have unrealistic expectations for their website project.

B. Select a business with an existing website. This is not a requirement, but it certainly helps to have a website with some history especially if they have traffic already coming to the site. In many cases you can step in and make just a few changes to dramatically improve their online business.

C. Recognize and select money making opportunities. It will take some time to develop this skill, but in the future you will have enough experience to easily uncover hidden opportunities in business. For example, I can typically assess the financial opportunity in any situation with a detailed interview with the business owner and then a couple hours of research. If it is an industry that I know really well, I can sometimes make that assessment in less than 30 minutes.

D. Select a business owner who will stay out of your way. Another thing you should look for is a business owner who recognizes that you are the expert and will give you control over the website project. This is a tough one because it’s rare to find a business owner or CEO who will let you run with a project and build it like you know it should be.

Over the next few days, try to find a client you can work with during the course of this bootcamp. Remember to be selective and choose someone you can really help succeed. This part of the process is as much for your learning as it is for your reputation as a web designer.

You may feel uncomfortable approaching a business owner, and that’s completely natural. We’d like to encourage you to go for it anyway and find someone that understands you’re in the learning phase. Think outside the box including business owners, charities, organizations, clubs, etc. However, you may choose to complete your own portfolio website as part of the bootcamp.

The only rule is that your website must be live when you complete the bootcamp if you plan to apply for the certification, and it must be built for a real person.

How Do Search Engines Work?

Basically crawler-based search engines, such as Google, Yahoo and Bing, create listings by “crawling” the web and indexing the text content. Crawler-based search engines will eventually find any changes made on a website which can affect how you are listed. Titles of the page, body copy and other elements play an important role.

An algorithm isn’t human and it only looks at text. A search engine doesn’t understand a cool design or sounds and movies. Search engine spiders crawl the web looking at text. They index, process, calculate relevancy and retrieve. Your website’s links, keyword density and Meta tags are all important aspects that will determine how well it ranks.

Make it a priority to check out a spider simulator to see how all the bells and whistles on your site look––or don’t look. (We’ll cover how to use a spider simulator – and where to find one – after we talk about effective SEO elements on a website.)

Are All Search Engines the Same?

Search engines basically operate the same, but it’s the minor differences that can determine if your websites emerge victorious in results relevancy. For Yahoo and Bing, keyword factors are most relevant. For Google, relevant links are the most important keys.

Yahoo has no preference for sites with respect to age. Google, on the other hand, will rank a site for its age and longevity. Google respects website maturity. Thus, the smart marketer or designer will study the differences in search engines and use their indexing platforms to his or her advantage. If your plan is to conquer more than one search engine, you’ll need to optimize carefully and know how each search engine is likely to respond.

Two Areas Of SEO

There are two basic areas of SEO – On-Page SEO and Off-Page SEO.

On-Page SEO is the optimization of a website’s content, text, tags and other elements. It includes your content, keywords, meta tags and other things located on your website.

Off-Page SEO is everything you do to get your website to rank well that is not actually located on the site itself. Instead, it’s elsewhere on the web. Off-Page SEO can include article marketing, social media, other blogs linking back to you and other mentions of your website on the Internet.

Mysterious Places

1. Easter Island

Off the coast of Chile, Easter Island doesn't boast any stories of people disappearing or black magic. One of the theories is that a civilization has lived here long time ago, but the people ate everything on the island and either moved somewhere else or were exterminated. It is, however, the home of these wicked warrior statues, some up to 50 feet high. The real question about this island is who carved them and how they got there. What mysterious force do you think made them appear? I guess the only thing to do is to go ask one of the 200 native people living on the island. My bet, though, is that communicating with them might prove fruitless considering there is virtually no knowledge of who they are originally.

2. Santa Cruz

Known for its many optical illusions, this cabin is an oddity like no other. Many a visitor has tried to channel their inner-most mad physicist to figure out why the cabin, seemingly on flat, level ground, will have you tipping over every which way. One simply can't stand straight.California, famous because of its disrespect to the laws of physics and gravity. The odd cabin, although seems like lying on flat ground, makes those who enter inside swinging all the time. The most probable theory that tries to explain this says that it’s all about “tilt-induced visual illusion. The illusion experienced by visitors results from the oddly tilted environment as well as standing on a tilted floor. Inside the tilted room of the Mystery Spot misperceptions of the height and orientation of objects occur. Even when people are standing outside on a level ground, the slant of the building in the background causes misperceptions as we judge the height of people using the slant of the roof rather than the true horizon.”

3.The Bermuda Triangle

This part of the world is so mysterious (or large!) there aren't even any photos of it! This giant sea triangle off the coast of Florida has played host to countless ship and plane disappearances over the centuries. Sounds fishy to me... undersea Sirens a la The Odyssey perhaps? Accounts ranging from natural disasters, to conspiracy theories, to abductions have been used to explain the region's fateful history.

4. Racetrack Playa

Racetrack Playa in California is well known due to its sailing stones. No one knows how, but the stones there somehow manage to move from their original position, leaving a track behind them. The reasons are still unknown and are subject of research. It is supposed that the winds in the valley are “responsible” for this.

5. Mount Roraima

Mount Roraima is located on the triple border point between Brazil, Guyana and Venezuela. It is weird because of its shape, but is also mysterious because of the clouds that are always near the peak and the endemic fauna. The tabletop of the mountain, which is the peak actually, is considered as one of the world’s oldest geological formations. It is believed that the plateau was formed by water and winds, but the reason why some species can’t be found anywhere else remain mystery.

Nokia's Here Maps has plenty to shout about, particularly as the Android version ports the majority of the premium Windows Phone 8 version.

The first thing that stands out above all else is the offline mode. It's possible to download Maps and store this data in full on the host Android device. Better still, as the software is vector-based rather than tile, the file size is considerably smaller. Around 50,000 times smaller, in fact. Now that means the entirety of the USA could be stored in full on a device with only a 2.5GB impact to a microSD card or on-board memory. Or you could put the whole world on there, y'know, just because you could.

The second standout feature is the integration of 3D mapping, built in fluidly to the interface. We pinched, rotated and used two-finger vertical swipes to adjust the camera position. The overlay of 3D buildings helps to give a sense of location or, if you don't like them, then dump them out of view and go to a more "traditional" top-down map in any number of display modes. But it's much cooler to be looking around the "real" world in a format that makes everyone seem more like mini beings from The Sims computer game.

This kind of 3D overlay may sound like an unnecessary gimmick, but in directions mode, such as for satnav, it gives a sense of place and visual markers that will assist in getting to the right destination.

The SGS3 we tested it with runs the app super smoothly, and lends itself well to all the little flourishes built into the system. Jump into a street view level, for example, and the transition between top-down is done in a sweeping movement that, while not 100 per cent perfect, has a believable, fluid-like motion.

The fundamental basics work a treat too. An obvious essential, because who wants a pretty interface that doesn't know how to direct you to the local pub or locate those important landmarks?

As per all the other versions of the application, the Android version of Here will come with a variety of goodies including real-time traffic updates, live public transport schedules direct from providers, and aggregated information about surrounding businesses and venues (sourced from the likes of Zagat, Tripadvisor and, in the future, potentially more social bases). All of these update in real time when linked to a data connection, so if there's a traffic accident down the road the directions will automatically update the route.

There are even in-progress features such as venue view which details the component shops in a shopping centre, mall or outlet store, while individual 3D buildings can be tapped to be isolated from the map - doing so pops up a miniature animated street level frame to confirm it's the location you're looking for. Make it full screen with a simple double tap and you can be walking around outside. Well, virtually.

Nokia also has a team working behind the scenes verifying buildings for accuracy and location, which is an ongoing process - semi-transparent blue buildings, rather than totally see-through ones are verified. The purpose of this is more for its native Windows Phone 8 iteration, but as all the data works across devices, Android users will gain the benefit of this too.

Maybe maps aren't always the most exciting of subjects, but Nokia's come up with a blistering port of an already excellent system here. And sometimes it's those small things that make the biggest of differences to the day-to-day routine. We've only scratched the surface and we're sure there'll be some blips and bugs to iron out, but from what we've seen so far it's looking good.

Here will be a must for Android users, although we'll all have to wait until 2013 for the finished version to become available.

Setting Up LibreOffice on the Galaxy S

using the Linux-On-Android application, and switch back and forth between that and Android apps. It works well and seems pretty stable, so I’d definitely recommend that readers give it a try.

At the end of the story, I mentioned that maybe I would try LibreOffice and report on the results. Is there a practical reason to do that? Perhaps not right now. As we continue to move from desktops and notebooks to the cloud and mobile devices, productively using a word processor on one of these little machines might make sense.

Let’s see where it takes us.

Load and Run LibreOffice
The first thing to do is use apt-get, on the command line, to install LibreOffice on the Galaxy. In a terminal window, on the phone, type the following.

smartphone/# apt-get install libreoffice

A bunch of text will scroll by and the program will ask if you want to install LibreOffice. Type a “y” for yes. More text will scroll by and you’ll eventually end up back at the command line.

Next, move over onto a Linux notebook and ssh (using the -X option) into the phone. Open a terminal and use the following.

notebook/$ ssh -X root@192.168.1.102

Naturally, you’ll need to replace the 192.168.1.102 IP address with whatever one your phone is using. On the phone, enter the following command to display its current IP address:

smartphone/# ifconfig

Your address will be the “inet addr:” value under the eth0 entry.

Finally, on the notebook, in the terminal, start LibreOffice with the following:

notebook/$ libreoffice

On my phone along with my Asus Linux notebook, LibreOffice was up and running in about 20 seconds. I ran top (system status application) in a terminal on the smart phone as LibreOffice loaded and found that CPU utilization hit a peak of about 30 percent.

After everything settled down, the phone ran at a steady 5-10 percent.

I cut and pasted this story into LibreOffice on the phone, and all the functions seemed to work properly. The text could be edited without problems, but had predictable lags when doing heavy lifting, like moving big blocks of text. I thought it was usable and not too frustrating. I was also able to insert a graphical image and save the file without issues.

I’m sad to say that power consumption while running LibreOffice was abysmal. Running any big app like LibreOffice will certainly drain the Galaxy battery in less than an hour from a full charge. The solution is to plug the phone into its charger while running LibreOffice to keep the battery charged up. Bear in mind that I have a rooted phone and run it constantly at the 1-GHz maximum clock speed.

The other problem I had was that the LibreOffice window on the notebook didn’t have the usual minimize/maximize/close buttons, making those functions un-reachable. I was able to drag a corner or side to resize, but couldn’t move the window around the screen with the mouse. Maybe there are some settings to fix these problems, and I’ll have to investigate that further.

What’s Next
I’m sure some readers must be asking the question, “Why put LibreOffice on your Linux/Android smart phone?”

I wanted to show that even first-generation Galaxy S smartphones are pretty darned powerful. It wasn’t so many years ago when desktops barely had this much horsepower. Imagine trying to run a current version of LibreOffice (this one was 3.5.2.2) on an old 486 with 128 MB of RAM and a clunky old 4-GB hard disk. We had that level of performance just 10 years ago.

In the not too distant future, I’m thinking that our smartphones and tablets will become our word processing machines. They’ll replace the desktops, both in capability and portability, as well as convenience. I’m not sure whether the user input interface will be a traditional touch-type-style keyboard, some kind of soft keyboard, or keys that appear in holographic space. Maybe I’ll squint at a VNC session on my Galaxy S smart phone while navigating around the screen with one of those crazy little Bluetooth thumb keyboard/touchpad things. If I can ever get my Asus Transformer Prime tablet (TF-201) rooted, I think it would make a good LibreOffice test candidate.

The larger point is that our smartphones and tablets are getting so capable and powerful that we will definitely will be using them in ways we never could have imagined just a year or two ago.

Let’s not forget that Linux people tend to regularly tackle challenges with considerable bravado and a disarming lack of modesty. So if somebody asks “Why did you do that?”an appropriate answer is: “Because I can.”

In this article I will share my ten favorite features that made me switch and will make me stick with Gmail.
I should note that most of these features are also available in other email clients. The point is that they are far superior , more advanced convenient to use in Gmail.

1. Search

Google is of course all about online search, so how could this feature not be awesome in Google’s webmail client? For me this means that I no longer need to sort my emails into folders, instead I can simply archive most emails. All it takes is to know a few details about what I’m looking for and once those are entered into the right search fields, Gmail will find the desired email faster than I could ever scan through a cluttered folder.

2. Filters

Gmail does several smart things with filters. Firstly, every search can easily be turned into a filter, as seen in the screenshot above. Secondly, every email can be turned into a search via the > More > Filter messages like these dialogue.

Finally, the filter options are incredibly comprehensive, letting you do almost anything with a filter that you could imagine. In short, managing emails using filters is a breeze.

3. Labels
If you are using filters, you will also be using labels. Labels are a little like folders, only a lot smarter. Although you can use them like folders, they are better used for keeping unimportant stuff out of your inbox or highlighting it using label colors. Whenever you have time, you can go through the unread email in your labels. You can show or hide labels in the sidebar and associate a color, to make labelled emails stand out.

4. Importing Email Accounts
Gmail makes it super easy to import other email accounts and use aliases to send email as if you were sending them from another account. All you need to know to import another email account is the email address and your password. Gmail will fill in the rest of the details and within seconds you can say bye-bye to Hotmail and the like. Unfortunately, this only works with email providers that allow POP3 access.

Go to > Settings > Accounts and Import and click > Add a POP3 mail account you own, then fill in the account details and be done.

It is worth noting that Gmail also makes it possible to create a custom signature for each alias you have added. Previously only accessible via Google Labs or plugins, multiple signatures meanwhile is a native feature, found under > Settings > General.

5. Multiple Inboxes
This is one of many Google Labs features that made me switch to Gmail. It allows you to turn the Gmail main page into a hub showing up to five different ‘inboxes’. The so-called inboxes are set up using search operators, as demonstrated in the screenshot below. You can enable Multiple Inboxes via > Settings > Labs.

6. Starred Email
It may seem silly, but I love to star my emails. Stars are especially helpful for keeping track of various work-related tasks. In combination with Multiple Inboxes, they are a lifesaver.

7. Undo Send
Did it ever happen to you that the moment you hit Send on an email, you realized you forgot an attachment or noticed a spelling error or were suddenly unsure whether you should really send this email? It happens to me all the time. Gmail has a feature for that called Undo Send. Found under > Settings > General, it can be used to delay the sending of emails for up to 30 seconds.

This is another Labs feature that became a standard feature.

If it wasn’t for this Labs feature, I would frequently and unintentionally exclude people from a conversation.

9. Canned Responses

When you enable this Gmail Labs feature, an additional option will become available when creating filters. You may have noticed it in the filter options screenshot above. Canned responses can be added and accessed from a link directly underneath the subject field when composing an email.

10. Webmail Client

Finally, Gmail is obviously a webmail client, which essentially means three great features in one:
I can access Gmail from anywhere, provided I can find a computer with Internet access.
I no longer have to worry about backing up my desktop email client.

How to configure a location for a network connection.

When you connect your computer to a new network for the first time, you are prompted to choose a location. Three different locations are available:

Home network : Choose this location when you trust the people and devices on the network. You can set up a Homegroup with this location type. Network discovery is turned on which means you can see other computers on the network and other computers can see your computer.
Work network : This location type is configured the same as a Home network location but you cannot set up a Homegroup.
Public network : Choose this option when connecting to a public network, such as a coffee shop or airport, the Internet without a router or a mobile broadband connection. The Homegroup is not available and Network discovery is turned off.

To change the location of your network connection follow the procedure below:

Do you remember the Walkman? The CD? The CD Walkman? Sony created (and co-created) all of them, along with the Trinitron TV, Blu-Ray discs, the PlayStation and dozens of other consumer electronics devices that helped create our modern world. But over the last few years, others have captured Sony’s traditional markets, while very little Sony innovation has made an impact. The result is a bloated workforce, unsold inventory and a stock that’s down more than 90% from its all-time high in 2000.

Walkman

Sony has posted losses for four consecutive years, and the company has lost its leadership position in just about every market it used to dominate. Can Sony’s new rock star CEO refocus the company before Apple, Microsoft and Samsung devour everything it has left?

Consumer electronics used to be Sony’s cash cow, but now it’s more of an expensive hobby. Sony’s VAIO line of PCs no longer commands a premium. Improving phone cameras have eroded point-and-shoot camera sales, and Sony’s SLRs have barely dented the market. Sony’s eReader charge died long ago.

But the biggest devastation has come in TVs. While Sony packed its spendy sets with features like Google TV, Samsung made a less expensive, more reliable product that still included the things (like Netflix and Pandora) that customers really wanted. Earlier this year, Sony admitted defeat, hacking its ambitious plan to produce 40 million TV sets per year by 50%.

Gaming also hasn’t gone well. The company that pushed Sega out of the console business has fallen on hard times. The PS Vita handheld has been a flop, even in Japan, where the previous generation PSP continues to outsell it even as tablet and smartphone gaming threatens the entire category.

The PlayStation 3, Sony’s gaming bread and butter, is aging poorly. Despite a giant pavilion at the recent Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Sony barely made a peep at the show. Microsoft, which also had no new hardware, still made a stir with its SmartGlass platform announcement. Game publishing looks no better, with the once-mighty Sony Online Entertainment now best-known for being part of a 2011 hack that compromised millions of accounts.

Phones are still a growth business, but Sony is late to the game. Its newest Xperia Android smartphones are solid middle-of-the-pack contenders, while Samsung and HTC are worlds ahead in features and carrier relationships. Unless Sony can create meaningful tie-ins with its gaming or entertainment properties, purchasers will consider Sony handsets only when the price is right.

The Prognosis Sony isn’t going bankrupt in the near future, but when upper management acknowledges the bleeding, things are bad. There are problems that won’t get better on their own. Sony’s phones are likely to languish in the U.S. and Europe, and perform better in Japan. Some mildly interesting consumer electronics products, like the new Google TV box, won’t be enough to change the company’s fortunes. Its film and video division (one of the few lines of business still making a profit) will probably perform well, but without an anchoring technology, distribution will depend on third-party partners. Gaming remains Sony’s strongest chance to gain a distribution foothold in the living room, and the next year will be critical. If Hirai has his way, the Sony of 2015 will be a smaller, more focused, more innovative company that may have shed much of its commodity electronics business to focus on gaming, telecommunications and entertainment content. If he doesn’t get his way, Sony will continue to leak money until it breaks up under its own weight.

Today, Google announced two new computers, the latest Chromebook laptop and a new desktop machine called the Chromebox. After reading Jon Mitchell's thorough review, it became apparent that there's now very little difference in user experience between the Chromebook and a traditional laptop (for example, one from HP that runs on a Windows OS). Should traditional PC manufacturers such as HP - not to mention the world's biggest software provider for laptops, Microsoft - be worried about this? You bet they should. Let's use a specific laptop from HP as an example. Note: This isn't an exact feature comparison, because it's the user experience I'm exploring here. With that disclaimer in mind, I'm going to use the HP Pavilion g6 laptop as my example. I chose it because it was in the "Everyday" category on HP's website, which is basically the same market for Google's Chromebook laptop.

The price points are similar, too. The HP Pavilion g6 is being marketed as "just what you need for everyday life," with words like "reliable" and "just right" being used to describe it. The machine costs $550, but you can get it for $430 after savings. The default OS for the HP Pavilion g6 is Windows 7 Home Premium and it comes pre-loaded with Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser. The display is 15.6", which admittedly is quite a bit larger than the latest Chromebook's 12.1" display (but let's ignore that for the purposes of this post). It runs on an AMD Dual-Core processor and comes with 4GB of RAM, with a free upgrade to 6GB currently on offer. It has a 500GB Hard Drive, if you include another free upgrade. Google's latest Chromebook - the Samsung Chromebook Series 5 550 - will cost between $450 (for the Wi-Fi version) and $550 (for the 3G version). It runs on an Intel Core processor and comes with 4GB of RAM. So if a consumer is looking for a new laptop and has between $450-550 to spend, she may well end up deciding between the Chromebook and an HP Pavilion g6.

31 Simple Ways to Prevent Cancer

Small changes to inoculate your self against cancer.

Most cancers don’t develop overnight or out of nowhere. Cancer is largely predictable, the end result of a decades-long process, but just a few simple changes in your daily life can significantly reduce your risk. Here are 31 great tips.

1. Serve sauerkraut at your next picnic. A Finnish study found that the fermentation process involved in making sauerkraut produces several other cancer-fighting compounds, including ITCs, indoles, and sulforaphane. To reduce the sodium content, rinse canned or jarred sauerkraut before eating.

2. Eat your fill of broccoli, but steam it rather than microwaving it. Broccoli is a cancer-preventing superfood, one you should eat frequently. But take note: A Spanish study found that microwaving broccoli destroys 97 percent of the vegetable’s cancer-protective flavonoids. So steam it, eat it raw as a snack, or add it to soups and salads.

3. Toast some Brazil nuts and sprinkle over your salad. They’re a rich form of selenium, a trace mineral that convinces cancer cells to commit suicide and helps cells repair their DNA. A Harvard study of more than 1,000 men with prostate cancer found those with the highest blood levels of selenium were 48 percent less likely to develop advanced disease over 13 years than men with the lowest levels. And a dramatic five-year study conducted at Cornell University and the University of Arizona showed that 200 micrograms of selenium daily — the amount in two unshelled Brazil nuts — resulted in 63 percent fewer prostate tumors, 58 percent fewer colorectal cancers, 46 percent fewer lung malignancies, and a 39 percent overall decrease in cancer deaths.

4. Pop a calcium supplement with vitamin D. A study out of Dartmouth Medical School suggests that the supplements reduce colon polyps (a risk factor for colon cancer) in people susceptible to the growths.

5. Add garlic to everything you eat. Garlic contains sulfur compounds that may stimulate the immune system’s natural defenses against cancer, and may have the potential to reduce tumor growth. Studies suggest that garlic can reduce the incidence of stomach cancer by as much as a factor of 12!

6. Sauté two cloves of crushed garlic in 2 tablespoons of olive oil, then mix in a can of low-sodium, diced tomatoes. Stir gently until heated and serve over whole wheat pasta. We already mentioned the benefits of garlic. The lycopene in the tomatoes protects against colon, prostate, and bladder cancers; the olive oil helps your body absorb the lycopene; and the fiber-filled pasta reduces your risk of colon cancer. As for the benefits of all of these ingredients together: They taste great!

7. Every week, buy a cantaloupe at the grocery store and cut it up after you put away your groceries. Store it in a container and eat several pieces every morning. Cantaloupe is a great source of carotenoids, plant chemicals shown to significantly reduce the risk of lung cancer.

The Power of Antioxidants

8. Mix half a cup of blueberries into your morning cereal. Blueberries rank number one in terms of their antioxidant power. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals, which are unstable compounds that can damage cells and lead to diseases including cancer.

9. Learn to eat artichokes tonight. Artichokes are a great source of silymarin, an antioxidant that may help prevent skin cancer. To eat these delicious veggies, peel off the tough outer leaves on the bottom, slice the bottom, and cut off the spiky top. Then boil or steam until tender, about 30-45 minutes. Drain. Dip each leaf in a vinaigrette or garlic mayonnaise, then gently tear the fibrous covering off with your front teeth, working your way inward to the tender heart. Once there, gently scoop the bristles from the middle of the heart, dip in a little butter or lemon juice, and enjoy!

10. Coat barbecue food with a thick sauce. Grilling meat can create a variety of cancer-causing chemicals. But researchers from the American Institute for Cancer Research found that coating the meat with a thick marinade and thereby preventing direct contact with the charring flames reduced the amount of such chemicals created. Another tip: Precook your meat in
the oven and then throw it on the grill to finish.

11. Every time you go to the bathroom, stop by the kitchen or water cooler for a glass of water. A major study published in The New England Journal of Medicine in 1996 found that men who drank six 8-ounce glasses of water every day slashed their risk of bladder cancer in half. Another study linked the amount of water women drank to their risk of colon cancer, with heavy water drinkers reducing their risk up to 45 percent.

12. Take up a tea habit. The healing powers of green tea have been valued in Asia for thousands of years. In the West, new research reveals that it protects against a variety of cancers as well as heart disease. Some scientists believe that a chemical in green tea called EGCG could be one of the most powerful anticancer compounds ever discovered.

13. Have a beer tonight. Beer protects against the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, known to cause ulcers and possibly linked to stomach cancer. But don’t overdo it. Drinking more than one or two alcoholic drinks a day may increase your risk of mouth, throat, esophageal, liver, and breast cancer.

14. Throw some salmon on the grill tonight. Australian researchers studying Canadians (go figure) found those who ate four or more servings of fish per week were nearly one-third less likely to develop the blood cancers leukemia, myeloma, and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Other studies show a link between eating fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, halibut, sardines, and tuna, as well as shrimp and scallops) with a reduced risk of endometrial cancer in women. Ah, those amazing omega-3s at it again!

15. Take a multivitamin every morning. Many studies suggest getting the ideal levels of vitamins and minerals can improve your immune system function and help prevent a variety of cancers.

16. Get about 15 minutes of sunlight on your skin each day. You’ve heard of the sunshine vitamin, vitamin D haven’t you? Turns out we’ve been so good at heeding advice to slather on sun lotion and avoid the sun’s rays that many of us aren’t getting enough of this valuable nutrient. Researchers find that getting too little vitamin D may increase your risk of multiple cancers, including breast, colon, prostate, ovarian, and stomach, as well as osteoporosis, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and high blood pressure.

The best source? Exposure to UVB rays found in natural and artificial sunlight. About 15 minutes a day ought to do it. Avoid overexposure, of course. That can increase your risk for cancers of the skin. You can also get vitamin D in your calcium supplement if you choose a supplement that contains both.

17. Carry a shot glass in your beach bag. Then fill it with sunscreen and rub it all over your body. A shot glass holds about 1.5 ounces, which is how much sunscreen dermatologists estimate you need to protect yourself from the cancer-causing UV rays of the sun. Repeat every two hours.

18. Cut a kiwifruit in half, then scoop out the flesh with a spoon. Now eat! Kiwi is a little hand grenade of cancer-fighting antioxidants, including vitamin C, vitamin E, lutein, and copper. You can also rub a couple of cut kiwifruit on a low-fat cut of meat as a tenderizer.

19. Use a condom and stick to one partner. The more sexual partners a woman has, the greater her risk of contracting human papillomavirus, or HPV, which causes cervical cancer. Having an unfaithful husband also increases her risk.

20. Cut out high-fat animal protein. A Yale study found that women who ate the most animal protein had a 70 percent higher risk of developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, while those who ate diets high in saturated fat increased their risk 90 percent. So switch to low-fat or nonfat dairy, have poultry or fish instead of beef or pork, and use olive oil instead of butter.

21. Have your partner feed you grapes. They’re great sources of resveratrol, the cancer-protecting compound found in wine, but don’t have the alcohol of wine, which can increase the risk of breast cancer in women. Plus, the closeness such an activity engenders (we hope) strengthens your immune system.

22. Sprinkle scallions over your salad. A diet high in onions may reduce the risk of prostate cancer 50 percent. But the effects are strongest when they’re eaten raw or lightly cooked. So try scallions, Vidalia onions, shallots, or chives for a milder taste.

23. Make a batch of fresh lemonade or limeade. A daily dose of citrus fruits may cut the risk of mouth, throat, and stomach cancers by half, Australian researchers found.

Unnecessary Chemicals

24. Take a 30-minute walk every evening after dinner. That’s all it takes to reduce your breast cancer risk, according to a study from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. Turns out that moderate exercise reduces levels of estrogen, a hormone that contributes to breast cancer. When 170 overweight, couch potato women ages 50-75 did some form of moderate exercise for about three hours a week, levels of circulating estrogen dropped significantly after three months. After a year, those who lost at least 2 percent of their body fat had even greater decreases in estrogen. Another study linked four hours a week of walking or hiking with cutting the risk of pancreatic cancer in half. The benefits are probably related to improved insulin metabolism due to the exercise.

25. Buy organic foods. They’re grown without added pesticides or hormones, both of which can cause cellular damage that may eventually lead to cancer.

26. Learn to love dandelions. Using commercial pesticides on your lawn may increase your risk of cancer, since most contain pesticides such as 2,4-D (linked to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma) and MCPP (associated with soft-tissue cancers). Plus, pesticides used solely on lawns don’t have to go through the same rigorous testing for long-term health effects as those used on food. And, as E/The Environmental Magazine noted in a 2004 article, no federal studies have assessed the safety of lawn-care chemicals in combination, the way most are sold.

27. Buy clothes that don’t need to be dry-cleaned. Many dry cleaners still use a chemical called perc (perchloroethylene), found to cause kidney and liver damage and cancer in animals repeatedly exposed through inhalation. Buying clothes that don’t require dry cleaning, or hand washing them yourself, can reduce your exposure to this chemical. If you must dry-clean your clothes, take them out of the plastic bag and air them outside or in another room before wearing.

28. Choose cucumbers over pickles, fresh salmon over lox. Studies find that smoked and pickled foods contain various carcinogens.

29. Switch from french fries and potato chips to mashed potatoes and pretzels. A potential cancer-causing compound called acrylamide forms as a result of the chemical changes that occur in foods when they’re baked, fried, or roasted. Not surprisingly, many foods with the greatest amounts of acrylamide are also some of the worst-for-you foods, such as french fries, potato chips, and baked sweets. Although the results aren’t final yet, Michael Jacobson, Ph.D., executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, estimates acrylamide causes between 1,000 and 25,000 cancers per year. His agency has petitioned the Food and Drug Administration to set limits on the amount of acrylamide foods can contain. The FDA is studying the issue.

30. Go for a spray-on tan. They’re available in most tanning salons these days and, unlike tanning beds, there’s no evidence that they increase your risk of skin cancer.

31. Call up your bowling pal and hit the lanes. A study from the State University of New York at Stony Brook found that men with high levels of stress and those with less satisfying contacts with friends and family members had higher levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in their blood, a marker for the development of prostate cancer

Cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, and leafy green vegetables had the biggest effect on helping women retain their memory during the course of the study. In another study, the phytochemicals, anthocyanin (found in berries of all colors and cherries) and quercetin (found in onions, kale and apples), actually reversed some of the age-related memory deficits in laboratory animals.

Take Care of Your Heart - A healthy heart makes for a healthy brain. Because oxygen and nutrients are carried in the blood stream, anything that impedes blood flow will starve those all-important brain cells. Review your blood pressure and cholesterol level. Know your numbers and if they are elevated, take immediate measures to bring them down.

Get a Good Night's Sleep -When we sleep, the brain has time to recharge. Studies show that 7-8 hours of sleep a night helps to strengthen memory. Practicing good sleep habits helps keep the brain and the rest of the body functioning at its best.

Exercise - Regular physical activity has been shown to decrease the risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease by about half. Exercise increases blood flow to the brain and helps regulate blood sugar levels, both of which improve brain function and memory. Aim for 30 minutes a day.

Challenge Your Brain - Keep your mind active and challenged. Brain function decreases with age. Studies show that cognitive exercise can improve blood flow to the brain. Spend at least 15 minutes each day on a mental exercise such as a crossword puzzle, journaling or learning a new language in order to slow memory loss.
