Cold Strawberry Land part 2

Woke up early for Resort Buffet. Had to wait as there were too many guests!
Luckily, the food was nice! Loved omelettes!

We'll be going for Nature Discovery Tour in the morning.

Not a good start when we saw the rain start to pour..

First stop: BOH Tea Plantation

Beautiful scenery~

visited the tea factory for a tour on how to process the tea leaves. thought we might get to taste the tea, but fat hope!

Anyway, you can also enjoy their tea with bread at the cafe but it was super packed with people.

Next, we travelled all the way up to the peak of Cameron Highlands - Mount Brinchang. We tried to climb up the tower, but had to u-turn half way up due to the strong wind and rain. =(

Rain kept pouring, even when we move on to Mossy Forest. Decided not to trek in as it is still raining.

So, end up not doing much with this tour..

Pick up some quick snack before our next tour in the afternoon.

Only started our tour in the late afternoon. Waited for around 1 hour.. *tsk tsk*

Agro Delight Tour

Started with conventional farming of crops.

bought a bag of corn as well. ate it raw and it taste as sweet as a fruit!

then, we visited cactus farm.

we were told that we can't buy back the cactus as it will not be able to pass the custom and the soil is not suitable to grow in Singapore as well.

next, we went to see hydroponic farming.

discovered that insects have favourite colours too! wow!

okay, by this time, we were really hungry, still waiting for dinner.

finally, after much waiting, we arrived at a place for steamboat dinner.

the guide excitedly told us there will be a veggi buffet, and we were so shocked!!

thinking aloud, veggi only?! after such a long day!

thank goodness, we have the usual steamboat, but veggi is unlimited supply. *phew*

I remembered when the boss of Titiwangsa was promoting his tour, he said their steamboat dinner is different from those hotel, implying that theirs were much better. But, I disagree. I think my resort's steamboat is so much nicer!!

went to their night market to explore in the mid of the rain.

yes, the rain has not stopped!!

bought kfc, so you know how hungry we are after the dinner, lol.

ended the night with Monopoly Deal again, haha

Next morning, we will be travelling back to Singapore.

The journey back to Singapore was really tiring as it took more than 10 hours and it was so freezing cold.
It was supposed to be an 8 hr bus ride.

I do not want to sit in bus for that long again!!

All in all, Cameron Highlands was very cooling, good for relaxation. I think it is not advisable to go during December due to the rainy season. I realise even if you do not join the tour, you can still see pretty much of the stuff. It is possible to walk around easily with a map, and you can always hop on to tour bus back to the town or from town back to hotel or drive around (but make sure you are a skilled driver as the roads are quite narrow).

End of my 4D3N trip, but more like 3D2N with 1D on bus, haha

Cold Strawberry Land part 1

Made a quite last minute decision to go for a trip at Cameron Highlands with my poly gals. It is also the first time all four of us travelled together. =)

Booked our trip with Five Stars Travel for coach and stay at Strawberry Park Resort in Dec.

As it's December, it is quite cold, but we didn't expect it to be raining everyday..

After around 10 hours of travelling, we reached Cameron Highlands. Then, we were told that there were no public transport for tourists and the taxi service is very limited. So, the only mode of transport would be our legs and the local tour bus.

After much discussion, we decided on 3 tours from Titiwangsa for a total of RM160.

Finally reached our hotel at around 11.30am. Finally..

Then, we went to have lunch at our Resort. It's really expensive to dine here! But, no choice, there weren't any food place near our Resort.

Waited for our tour bus to pick us for Leisure Tour.

Surprised when we saw our bus, thought it will be at least a minivan.

Anyway, first stop is the Sam Poh Temple. Didn't went as we weren't interested and it is raining quite heavily.

Then, we went to Rose Centre.

We were introduced to this green rose. But, it didn't look like a rose. hmm

A beautiful rose that look like a shoe! =)

A flower that look so fake, yet it is real.

Nonetheless, the roses are very beautiful.

Next, we went to Honey Bee centre thinking we'll get to see some bees and extraction of honey. Nah, disappointed.

Then, next to it was the Market Square. Everywhere is strawberries-related! And, I do not like strawberries.

Then, is the exciting Butterfly Garden. It has many different insects!!

Last stop of tour is Strawberry centre.

Managed to photo the different stages of strawberry development. ^.^ I can use this for teaching too!

Back to our Resort to enjoy steamboat dinner!

Had tom yum soup and chicken soup base. It was the first time that I actually liked tom yum soup base over others. Satisfying meal! =)

Tour around Langkawi

Took a ferry from Alor Star Kuala Perlis to Langkawi.

1 hour ferry with Malay horror comedy show.

Toured around Langkawi island with a helpful driver

First stop - Underwater world

It's much bigger than I expected given that it is in an island.

As I look at the sea creatures, I thought of the times where I was teaching my students on the different characteristics of marine life.

I remember how excited they were when I introduced the different fishes and sea creatures.

was told that this is the most beautiful beach in Langkawi.

How I wish I could just lay on the sand and listen to the nature sounds.

we queued for nearly 1 hour before we got on it.

There were two stops for you to view the scenary of Langkawi.

this is the first stop where you can walk on the bridge to view the scenary.

As we were rushed for time, we only stop at the peak.

This was all we could cover in a day due to the time spent in travelling from one place to another.

after looking at the map, I realised that there was actually alot more places that we could have visited.

well, I may return for a second visit. =)

Blue sky, Fluffy clouds and Greenery

Make a last minute decision to visit my uncle during this December holiday.

He stays in the faraway part of Malaysia that I have not heard of - Alor Star.

And, this is the first time I have visited him whereas he has came all the way to visit my family several times.

It's a long long journey of 12 hours on coach bus to Alor Star. I wonder how my uncle endured it for so many times.

There wasn't much public transport in the area, so my cousin came to drive us to my uncle's place.

No tall buildings, but lots of green padi fields.

The sky is so blue and you could see the clouds so clearly.

It is a relaxing place, away from my computer and work..

His house is surrounded by fruits trees and padi fields that he grew~

we had coconut drink straight from the tree. haha

Didn't do much for the day. Simply enjoyed the greenery & took photos ~

visited their night market which opens every friday. the varuety of food is alot more than what i expect.

Had dinner together with my uncle's family.

Though I didn't have much to say to them, but it was great eating together as a big family. =)

Attention Please!

To be an air stewardess or now more commonly known as cabin attendant is my ambition when I was young. (I think I mentioned it before in my post on Racial Harmony Celebrations)

I love the idea of working in the sky, travelling around the world with everyone.

But, I never seem to grow tall enough. (minimum height requirement is 1.58m for safety reasons)

And, I suppose I'll never be growing taller anymore given my age. Well well, it's okay. I found something else that I love to do too. =)

To many people, cabin attendant seems to be only someone who's there to serve you when you are traveling.

But, that's not the case.

Their main responsibility is to ensure your safety when flying with them!

As I watched this Japanese drama "Attention Please", I saw another side of cabin attendant that I have not known. The drama was mainly about how a girl (Yoko Misaki) overcomes many obstacles to become a cabin attendant. (By the way, this is not a new drama, it was aired in 2006.)

I love her energy level! No matter what happens, she is always so energetic and passionate about what she is doing. She is also very positive about herself (okay, maybe way too positive at times). She faced a lot of challenges but she never give up.

She used to do things her way without considering the feelings of others. Through the journey she understands the importance of teamwork in ensuring a safe flight for everyone.

At the start and end of her training, her mentor posted this question to them. "What is a cabin attendant to you?"

It struck me thinking too.

What is a special eduation teacher to me?

Next year will be a very challenging year for me, is my energy level ready?

The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life.

One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with education.

He argued: "What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher?"

He reminded the other dinner guests that it's true what they say about teachers:

"Those who can...do.

Those who can't ... teach."

To corroborate, he said to another guest: "You're a teacher, Susan," he said.

"Be honest. What do you make?"

Susan, who had a reputation of honesty and frankness, replied,

"You want to know what I make?"

I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could.

I can make a C+ feel like a Congressional Medal of Honor and an A- feel like a slap in the face if the student did not do his or her very best."

I am not so much of a sports person or sports fan, but it is still very exciting to see that Singapore has accomplished yet another first in history.

The YOG fire has started burning at the start of August, and it will continue till 26 August 2010.

I feel so much lighter now as I have cleared my University loan!! =)

Looking back, I remembered that I set the aim to repay it within one and a half year after my graduation.

I officially graduated in July 2010, so expected repayment date is Dec 2010.

But, this is the month of August and I am proud to say I cleared it! hahaha

I didn't expect myself to be able to complete the repayment so fast given that I was jobless for several months in 2009.

Splitting it into smaller payments, cutting down on spending, getting used to putting aside some money for the loan..

You just need to repay bit and bit and tadah ~ it's cleared!

I did it! Yeah! (^.^)

Racial Harmony Celebrations

It has been so long since I last celebrated Racial Harmony Day!

I put on my Sarong Kebaya (SIA Girl uniform) that I bought when I was in secondary school. Surprisingly, it still fitted me well even though the skirt is a little tight.

When I reached school, it was a pleasant sight to see so many people (colleagues and students) dressed up in their beautiful ethic costumes. =)

As I was walking to the hall, some students excitedly asked me this question.

"Were you an Air Stewardess before joining Pathlight?"

haha, I had to tell them honestly that I was not. But, that was my ambition when I was young. Nevertheless, it was something I can't be as I did not meet their height expectation.

Anyway, Racial Harmony Day was a full day celebration for my school and there was a whole string of activities planned for them. I believed everyone did enjoyed themselves even though there may be some minor hiccups.

Great work done by the team behind the Racial Harmony Committee!

On a side note, on my way home, a passerby also approached me and asked if I am an Air Stewardess! haha (^.^)

Even though I didn't manage to become an Air Stewardess, I was glad that I got to wear the uniform (thanks to Racial Harmony Day) and think of myself as an Air Stewardess even if it is just for one day. =)

All in all, I hope Singapore can always be a harmonious country for us to live in!

Learning the Same Stuff in a New Way

Someone told me that Science is an interesting subject to teach.

I was of course taken aback and rejected the idea.

Since young, I always love Mathematics. Be it the Elementary or the Additional Mathematics. They are my favourite subjects. I love the satisfaction of being able to solve the challenging questions.

As for Science, I had not much memory of what I had learned. Ironically, I actually took Pure Biology, Pure Chemistry and Pure Physics during my Secondary school days. But, of course I wasn't doing well for any of these science subjects. It was a torture for me.

During my Uni days, I taught primary Mathematics in a Learning Centre as well. It was enjoyable as I know the subject well thus it made the teaching so much easier.

But, when I started teaching my first subject in Pathlight School, I was given the subject Discovery to teach. It was a pre-science subject to allow students the opportunity to explore basic science concepts.

I was shocked thinking how am I going to teach something I don't like and I am not good in?

So, I started off teaching Discovery by telling them chunks of stuff that I have found out from the slides.

When students start to ask questions, you will be surprised that they are only in Primary 2. I realised that there was so much that I didn't know about science. It became more interesting as I started to explore the concepts on my own.

We started to do more hands-on activities that are relevant to the topics. We have songs and stories that are engaging and relevant at the same time. There were some mini experiments whenever possible. Pictures replace the lengthy words and information were kept simple and concise.Students ask lots of interesting questions and many a times I do not have the answer to them.

It was so much more interesting and engaging than just passing information to the students from the notes.

Now, I start to like Science! =)

It was amazing how teaching my students actually changed my long standing perspective on the boring old Science subject.

Macau + Hong Kong Trip part 7

Woke up earlier today in order to enjoy Dim Sum at Xiao Fei Yang~

Continued to shop at Mongkok Centre. Haha, this is the best place for shopping.

Have been considering to buy this glass piano, but, am holding back as the song that is being played is not what I want. Thus, did not buy it in the end.

Got myself a maple leaf with Canon in D. =)

Intended to go to the Happy Balley Racecourse and Lan Kwai Fong, but we weren't left with much money and our energy were kind of depleting slowly, so decided to give it a miss.

After some lazing around, we went back to Mongkok Centre to do our last shopping. We wanted to spend all that we have left, and just leaving the minimal for tomorrow.

Aren't we glad that this will be the last time that we need to shower in the tiny bathroom and sleep on the tiny bed? haha

Our last breakfast in Hong Kong - we decided to have the best porridge at Hai Jing Zhou Dian! (you might have realized that we have been patronizing this place very often, do I need to mention that their food is superb again? ^.^ )

The heavy backpacks we need to carry:

Took First Ferry back to Macau Ferry Terminal.

Intended to go to Senado Square to buy some Portuguese Tarts, but, our bags were too heavy for us to walk around and the bus doesn't seem to be able to accommodate us. Sadly, we have to gave up on this thought and hang around at the airport instead.

Trip afterthoughts:

For my past trips, the level of comfort of accommodation has never been on my priorities. But, from this trip, I realised it could badly affect my energy. As the saying always goes, 休息是为了走更远的路. True enough, I should look for better accommodation for my next trip.

Macau + Hong Kong Trip part 6

We woke up late yet again..haha

Had breakfast at Good Hope Cafe, saw the recommendation on travel guides. The soup base is good, but that's about it.

Intended to visit the Ng Tung Choi Waterfall & Botanic Garden, but apparently, we didn't get the right address. Luckily it wasn't a waste trip as Yuen Lang is the next stop.

Yuen Lang seems to be one of the better branch of Heng Xiang Shop, famous for their Lao Po Bing.

I suppose it's worth the 1 hour journey to Yuen Lang. =)

For the past few days, we have been eating quite a big portion for breakfast, so a bowl of noodle was obviously not enough.

Decided to eat the desserts!

The famous Xu Liu Shan Dessert Store. It has many branches all over Hong Kong.

I can only say it's so Mango-licious!! ^.^

They should reopen their outlet in Singapore~

Continued our shopping at Mongkok Centre. There are just so many shops here that you won't get bored shopping here several times.

Tried the Cold Noodle as well. You can see many youngster holding onto one while shopping.

It was real good and appetizing! I finished my pack with a few mouthful. haha

I have to say the noodle make us more hungry so we walked to Temple Street for our early dinner at Mido Cafe.

It is those olden and traditional Hong Kong style Cha Chan Ting that you can see often in Hong Kong Dramas.

But, the prices of the food are quite expensive though.

Since we are at Temple Street, we have to do some shopping as well. Lol

It was a small stretch of stores, similar to our Pasar Malem. We got a few good buys, one of it is the Doraemon stuff toy where you can record your voice for just HKD30! =)

Continued to shop at Fai Yuen Night Market.

Tried to snacks but it wasn't to our liking. One was too spicy and the other was over chewy. LOL

Macau + Hong Kong Trip part 5

Woke up late again..but we wanted to try the breakfast at Cafe De Coral~

I need bigger portion! One is suppose to eat breakfast like the king! Thumbs up for the scrambled egg with Hokkaido cheese~ =)

Today, we will be going to Hong Kong Island.

First visit - Hong Kong Park

This is not your usual nature park as most of the things you see are in fact man made.

Their slogan : Making the Familiar Unfamiliar!

Walk to the nearby shopping mall - Pacific Place

Great use of word!

Wanted to take the tram ride, but we didn't know which to ride, so simply hop onto any. haha

The ride is only cost HKD2~

We rode on the tram till it reach the last stop at the Western Market and walked towards H & M.
Having nothing to shop for, we decided to go up to the Peak earlier.

Got on a bus from IFC area and off we go with our roller coaster ride. The view was amazing from the upper deck~

Heard that the McDonald at the Peak serve nicer food, so here we are. haha

Ordered the Mega Ebi Burger!

I guess it's the surrounding that seems to make the dinning so much better up here.

At the Peak Galleria, it used to be FOC when I last visited. However, its entrance fee is now HKD20.

Being at the top makes it much more colder as it is VERY windy! But we wanted to wait for the lights to be up, so we just had to move ourselves to keep us warm. Really freezing cold!

Most likely due to the constant blowing of cold wind, we weren't feeling that well when we took the bus back to Central.

It sort of used up all our energy. Hence, we decided to retreat early with a hot soya bean.

Macau + Hong Kong Trip part 4

Woke up late thus, brunch for today at Hai Jing Zhou Dian~

We kinda order too much that people were staring at us. LOL

Anyway, the Zhu Chang Fen and the You Tiao is super nice yeah! ^-^

Will be visiting Chi Lin Nunnery. Don't be taken back by the name. It is made up of Tang Dynasty Building in the midst of the city. A very good contrast.

I was quite surprise that the Guan Ying looked different from those that is common found. It is in a more relaxed position as stated on the information board.

For the Buddhist, you can get some souvenirs as well from here as well.

Decided to take a bus instead of train to our next stop.

Kowloon Walled City Park

We were quite excited when we reached the place, it looked like those scenes you often see in the dramas of Emperor's palace.

A small carnival was also going on at a nearby park. Saw an interesting game whereby they use the magnet to 'fish' the answer. Forgot to take a photo of it. =x

Travel by bus to Trendy Zone Shopping Mall (in between Mongkok and Yau Ma Tei area). It's a shopping mall full of small stores selling unique items.

Our dinner at Cafe De Coral (Da Jia Le) :

You can spot Cafe de Coral almost anywhere in Hong Kong! Great food at great price~ (but the queuing can be a torture)

Start the day off with a yummy breakfast at McDonald!

We had macaroni~

Will be travelling to Lantau Island today.

first stop will be the Citygates Outlets beside Tung Chung MTR.

Didn't get to buy anything as the stuff were mostly out of our budget, but most prices are warehouse prices, worth a visit if you are into branded stuff.

Took Bus 23 from the bus interchange nearby to go to the Ngong Ping Village.

Make our way to the Po Lin Monastery for our lunch. You have to buy a ticket first before you can go in. HKD60/person for the normal meal. As there were only 2 of us, we only got 5 dishes. The more people in a table, the more dishes they will provide.

The mushrooms were really nice. =)

After such a full meal, it's time for some exercise. We climbed up the long stairs leading to the Giant Buddha.

The scenery was the reward.

We climbed down again and went to wait for bus 21 to go to Tai O Fishing Village.

Hopped on to the first boat ride we saw for HKD20.

The weather was already cold and with the strong winds blowing, it was really getting into our bones. I was practically shivering as the boat moves. LOL

We had a small ride into the village first before heading out to the sea. There's a small chance of catching a glimpse of pink dolphins, but we were out of luck. Anyway, it was still an exciting boat ride as the waves were strong! =)

Our main purpose of coming to Tai O Village was actually to eat the famous Lan Niao Xia (peeing prawns).

It was freshly caught and cooked on the spot for you. One plate cost around HKD80. If you simply buy the prawns only, it is only HKD20! A superb price isn't it?

First time eating such prawns, and yes, it is very delicious as described by many, but we weren't that good at eating it. The price to pay for it was more than the money, our fingers were suffering. LOL

Ended our short trip at Lantau Island and travelled back to Mongkok for more shopping and eating~

Macau + Hong Kong Trip part 2

After a good rest, it's time for breakfast!

We entered this shop which seemed to have many customers. haha

But, the food wasn't as nice as we expect it to be.

As there wasn't much left for us to see in Macau, we decided to travel to Hong Kong earlier. To travel to Hong Kong, we will need to travel by sea from the Macau Ferry Terminal.

Before reaching the Ferry Terminal, our bus bypass the Fisherman's Wharf. It seemed worth a visit so we walked there with our bags. (we were carrying around 5Kg each, what were we thinking?)

Not sure if this is the bridge connecting Macau Pennisular and Taipa, I guess it'll look very beautiful at night.

Macau Fisherman's Wharf

We realised it was actually a themepark to be, with several main themes, hotels, restaurants.

We had to stop a few times as our bag was really heavy. Glad that we found a shuttle bus back to the Ferry Terminal.

Took First Ferry as it will stop at Tsim Tsha Tsui area which is near to our Hostel.

Intended to eat at Tsim Tsha Tsui area, but we couldn't find a good place to eat, thus, went straight to our hostel in Mongkok.

Stayed at the same hostel as we did the last time few years back - Oi Suen Guesthouse.

Whatever, it's time to fill our grumbling stomach.

Our favourite eating place - Hai Jing Zhou Dian, we missed this place so much..haha

The portion was really huge! Delicious and definitely worth the price! ^_^

Make our way to Mongkok Centre for shopping. Fully packed with people. You just have to squeeze your way through.

As we were rather full from our last meal, we decided to eat desserts only. It tasted very original, and not those with a lot of extra sweeteners.

At the end of the day, our shoulders were aching badly. haha, we need a good rest.

Macau + Hong Kong Trip part 1

This was the first last minute trip I had. We booked our air tickets and hotel accommodations only around 1 month in advance. And, being busy with work, we had little time to plan our itinerary.

Though there were some bumps here and there, in the end, we still managed to cover many areas of Macau and Hong Kong in our 8 Days 7 Nights Trip. =)

First time staying at the airport as our flight will only reach Macau at 3am. We had to wait till 7am for the first bus to Macau Peninsular where our hotel is located.

It was very cold in Macau, colder than what we expect, so we were simply freezing under our jackets. I suppose it was around 11 Degree Celsius.

Took a bus to our hotel - Ole London Hotel
Location of hotel was good and the room was pretty spacious and clean.

One interesting note about their bus is that the passengers are not encouraged/allowed to speak to the bus conductor.

After filling our stomach, we head out to the Senado Square where most of the attractions are located.

There was a huge crowd of tourists in front of St Paul's Ruins, making it quite a challenge to capture a photo here.

Mount Fortress~

Cathedral - It was huge and beautiful inside~ This should be the nicest among those we have entered.

As we walk around, we saw this beautiful hotel from afar and unkowningly, we slowly walked near it - Grand Lisboa. (It is in the background of the photo on the right.)

Took a look at their casino, not many people at this time. Pretty grand. And, I didn't know that photo-taking was not allowed in casinos. *oops

Hotel Lisboa is right opposite Grand Lisboa. It paled in comparison as Grand Lisboa's building seemed to be made of Gold. Lol

Since we are in Macau, of course we must eat the famous Portuguese Tarts! I have never tried it in Singapore, so I can't compare the difference. But, I do love the Portuguese Tarts much more than the normal egg tarts due to the crispy base!

It was a pity that we are not able to bring any back. =(

Heard that steamed milk was also pretty famous in Macau, so we look around and saw this shop

Continued our walk around the area and chanced upon their library. It was beautifully surrounded by nature. I hope we will have one of this in Singapore too!

St. Augustine's Square ~

It was not easy finding this place as it look so different from the brochure! I guess its colour faded over the years.

There are still several churches around - St. Anthony's Church, St. Augustine's Church, St Lawrence's Church.. After seeing a few, the churches start to look similar.

We nearly lost our way as we walked back to our hotel as the road names aren't clearly stated on the map. We were walking in circles, but finally we did found our way back on our own. *Phew!

Next up, we took the shuttle bus near our hotel and off we went to Venetian Hotel. (located in Taipa)

Ate our early dinner at the Food Court as we were really hungry. We were so happy to see that it was such a big portion! haha

We ate at the 'outdoor' area where we can have the' sky view'. haha

Venetian Hotel is so huge, just like a small town on its own in Macau. It was meant to look like Venice, so for those who are not able to visit Venice yet, this will be the starter course. =)

The Gondola Rides~

Wanted to ride in it initially, but the Gondoliers doesn't seem to be singing, so we decided to leave the ride to Venice.

There were numerous shops around as well.

I bet the casino in Venetian is the largest in Macau. After we walked down the escalator which were at the centre part, you can see the casino spread out in four directions.

We thought the 'sky' will turn dark, so we waited and waited. But, it never did. =(

Took the shuttle bus back to our hotel and rest~
