Asteroids are smaller than any of the planets and measuring up to 900 km (560 miles) across. Asteroids are small rocky or icy bodies that orbit the Sun. Smaller rocks are called meteors. They are sometimes called minor planets. Most asteroids are found in an orbit between Mars and Jupiter, and more than 7,000 of them have been identified.

The term asteroid is usually applied to objects that are larger than 1.6 kilometers in diameter. One asteroid, called Ida, has a tiny moon all of its own. This is the smallest known satellite in the Solar System. Asteroids were probably formed at the same time as the planets.

If it rains hard and long enough, low lying areas are at risk of flooding. It is a natural occurrence caused by heavy rain. Flooding is caused by too much rain in too little time. Human activity influences the frequency and severity of floods, but they are created by Mother Nature.

According to Frank Richards, a National Weather Service hydrologist (a water scientist), "There's more water flowing through the hydrological system than the system can draw off, A flood is an imbalance."

There are two basic types of floods, Regular River Flood- water slowly climbs over the edges of the river. Flash Flood- when a wall of water quickly sweeps over an area.

Extra water has to go somewhere. Our creeks have a limit of how much water it can hold. When too much rain fall in just a little time, creeks naturally overflow onto the floodplain. Floodplains are the areas along streams or rivers that are likely to experience repeated flooding. Over thousands of years, nature shaped the floodplain to hold excess water that spills over the banks. Floodplains are designed by nature to flood.

Homes and buildings were often built in floodplains because water was easily available for drinking or commercial uses, floodplain land is often flat and easier to develop than hilly land. It is important to regulate development in higher-risk areas.

A number of factors can contribute to flooding:

• Heavy, intense rainfall

• over-saturated soil, when the ground can't hold any more water.

• High river, stream or reservoir levels caused by the unusually large amounts of rain

• Urbanization, or lots of buildings and parking lots

• Ice jams in rivers

• Frozen soil

• Run-off from a deep snow cover

It is called a meteor or a shooting star if a lump of rock or metal burns up before it reaches the ground. It is a meteorite if a large meteor that does not burn up as it plunges through the Earth's atmosphere. As it hits the ground, it travels so fast and shatters into pieces. It causes huge shock waves as it lands. The impact crater in the picture above is to be found at Wolf Creek, Australia, and was caused by a huge meteorite or small asteroid. The amount of energy released would be equivalent to hundreds of nuclear weapons.

The asteroid belt lies between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. It is thought that this maybe the shattered remains of a planet that has been destroyed by Jupiter's enormous gravity.

Answer (A):The world will not end in 2012. Our planet has gotten along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide knows of no threat associated with 2012.

Q: What is the origin of the prediction that the world will end in 2012?

A: The story started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is headed toward Earth. This catastrophe was initially predicted for May 2003, but when nothing happened the doomsday date was moved forward to December 2012 and linked to the end of one of the cycles in the ancient Mayan calendar at the winter solstice in 2012 -- hence the predicted doomsday date of December 21, 2012.

Q: Does the Mayan calendar end in December 2012?

A: Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period but then -- just as your calendar begins again on January 1 -- another long-count period begins in the Mayan calendar.

Q: Could planets align in a way that impacts Earth?

A: There are no planetary alignments in the next few decades and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible. Q: What is the polar shift theory? Is it true that the Earth's crust does a 180-degree rotation around the core in a matter of days if not hours?

A: A reversal in the rotation of the Earth is impossible. There are slow movements of the continents (for example Antarctica was near the equator hundreds of millions of years ago), but that is irrelevant to claims of reversal of the rotational poles. However, many of the disaster websites pull a bait-and-switch to fool people. They claim a relationship between the rotation and the magnetic polarity of the Earth, which does change irregularly, with a magnetic reversal taking place every 400,000 years on average. As far as we know, such a magnetic reversal doesn’t cause any harm to life on Earth. Scientists believe a magnetic reversal is very unlikely to happen in the next few millennia.

Q: Is the Earth in danger of being hit by a meteor in 2012?

A: The Earth has always been subject to impacts by comets and asteroids, although big hits are very rare. The last big impact was 65 million years ago, and that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Q: How do NASA scientists feel about the claims of the world ending in 2012?

A: For any claims of disaster or dramatic changes in 2012, where is the science? Where is the evidence? There is none, and for all the fictional assertions, whether they are made in books, movies, documentaries or over the Internet, we cannot change that simple fact. There is no credible evidence for any of the assertions made in support of unusual events taking place in December 2012.

Q: Is there a danger from giant solar storms predicted for 2012?

A: Solar activity has a regular cycle, with peaks approximately every 11 years. Then, why do we feel thirsty? In our daily activity, such as running, walking, playing or even breathing we losses water. The amount of water that we lose must be replaced to make the water in our body constant. This loss of water is registered in the brain and sends signals to our mouth and throat. This is the time that we feel thirsty.

Many people believed that dryness in the mouth or throat is what causes thirst. In reality, dryness can occur due to other factors and may not be a reason for being thirsty. Some people may still feel thirsty in spite of drinking too much water. This is because the amount of salt content in our blood is change. There is a certain salt and water relation in our blood. When we are having more salts than water, this result to thirst. The “thirst center” in our brain responds to the amount of salt in our blood. When there is a change, the brain sends message to the back of the throat, from there, the message go back to the brain, it is a combination of feelings that make’s us say were thirsty.

Why Does Lightning Flash?

As the atmosphere heats and cools. It expands and contracts, causing changes in pressure and air movement. Water droplets inside clouds have a positive electrical charge at the top of the cloud and a negative charge at the bottom.

When the negative charge comes near enough to an attracting positive charge on the Earth below or on another cloud, the electrical energy is released in a flash of light. There may also be a loud bang, called thunder, at the same time. This is caused by the air being heated to a tremendous temperature, and the explosive noise is when it expands suddenly.

However, as light travels faster through the air than sound, we see the lightning flash before hearing the thunder.

The cells are divided into two sections separated by a membrane.One side of the membrane contains an enzyme which helps chemical processes occur in your body. The other side of the membrane contains molecules that contain sulfur.The contents on each side of the membrane when you cut an onion will mix and cause a chemical reaction. This will produce molecules such as ethylsufine which make your eyes water.

To prevent crying when you cut an onion;

Cut it under a running tap of cold water.

"The sulfur compounds dissolve in water and are rinsed down the sink before they reach your eyes."

You can also put the onion in the freezer for ten minutes before you cut it.

"Cold temperatures slow down the reaction between the enzyme and the sulfur compounds so fewer of the burning molecules will reach your eyes."

Do you often wonder why a child resemble their parents?

The characteristics of individual beings are passed from one generation to the next in their chromosomes. But it doesn't mean that a person lost it's uniqueness. Each of our parents gives us 23 chromosomes, making 46 in all. That means that we have two versions of our genes, but one is often dominant. We can see the effect of a dominant gene, but the recessive gene is still there and can be passed on to our children.

What are these chromosomes? Chromosomes are tiny threads that are present in all cell apart from our red blood cells. They contain all the information from an en tire person to develop. There is a special pair that actually determines a persons sex.

Short sections of a chromosomes are called genes. Each genes carries the instructions for a specific characteristic such us an eye color, hair color, height and etc. Many of these genes work with other genes, so it is not easy to say what effects they will have. At the moment the mother's egg is fertilized, the genes starts issuing instructions for the molding of a new human being. Every characteristics that we inherited from our parents will be passed through the coding of the genes within the chromosome and will be passed down to the next generation.

Ah, the elusive achoo—there's much mystery surrounding our sternutation reflex, a.k.a. the sneeze.

Sneezing protects our nasal passageways from foreign particles by forcing a 100 mph whoosh of air from the lungs, but the reflex demands more movement than that. When stimulated, the brain stem’s sneeze center orders muscle contraction from esophagus to sphincter. That includes the muscles controlling your eyelids. Some sneezers even shed a few tears.

No one knows why. It's possible the body has grown to associate protecting the nasal passageways with protecting the eye, or it may just be a result of our body’s wiring. Nor do scientists know why some people sneeze at bright lights, or why the reflex is pleasurable to some but not others. Whatever its workings, the sneeze has the distinction of being the only reflex that warrants a "bless you" from total strangers.
