Slot machines aren’t why we have state parks

How hasn’t anyone noticed that Maryland is poised to become the only state in the country to put gambling in a state park (our beloved Rocky Gap State Park)? Having grown up in Maryland and proudly served the Department of Natural Resources as a Maryland State Park Naturalist for over 10 years, I am astounded a state that loves its state parks as much as Maryland would consider voting for such a proposal. I have spent many wonderful days hiking, catfishing, camping, canoeing and hunting around Lake Habeeb in Rocky Gap State park. The 3,000 acre preserve that composes the park is certainly a Maryland treasure. I was reluctant many years ago to the concept of a lodge being built as an economic development initiative, since I had never seen a fiscally successful state park lodge in West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio or Tennessee state parks. We can’t make a second mistake to try to fix another.

I currently reside in Delaware, where I am employed as the chief park naturalist for Delaware State Parks so I can’t vote on Nov. 4 but I am praying this measure fails. Slots are legal here in Delaware, and personally I don’t oppose slots, but I am not willing to sacrifice Maryland’s special places for slots revenue. What’s next, Sandy Point going condo? I am sure that would raise revenue estimates. But like gambling, it is not why we have state parks.

The previously thought to be unbeatable gets worked this past Saturday. BTW -- rumor has it that the EliteXC was in trouble and needed this to be a big fight. I don't know if this spells doom for them, and it might catapult them into some sort of cult following as legend slayers. But that is a half full POV, which probably won't happen.

A little craziness from the Titans organization. This article has it all--speeding away, hand guns in the glove box, therapists, and high speed interstate chases. The Nashville police had SWAT standing by in addition to therapists. The kicker for me was the quote that the Titans head of security called police, after Vince Young sped off from the stadium, that they had a player "going off".

To me, this indicates that this type of thing happens often enough that using the term going off is just what the players tend to do. It seems the former Madden cover man has taken the jinx to new levels. Not only did his poor play last year honor the jinx, he has upped the ante for Brett Favre to have some additional issues related to the curse.

Maryland eeked out a victory over Delaware, 14 -7. Playing all three QBs, there was quite a bit of dysfunction going on offense against the FCS team from our country's first state. Maryland's next game at home will be against PAC-10 Cal, which will be a tougher test going into the ACC season.

I agree with Fat Ray that he should not have been told to leave in front of other patrons. However, in the article, it states the officials confronted him in the bathroom first, and then were forced to not allow him to sit at the table for more gambling.

The other ironic part of the story is that Ray could not get comped a room to clean up and then return.

For all of you who know the Naturalist, this wouldn't have happened.

He definitely would have gotten a room, and some tickets to see Bea Arthur.

I didn't do more on this story later, except for now.

A couple theories about this pregnant call girl bust:

a. This is a fetish thing and there obviously is a market. Don't get all naive and think that these things aren't possible.

b. Juno -- we can blame it on that movie. It represented a 'fun' side to being pregnant, and the ability to find a home for your baby, not be ridiculed too much, and still foster great relationships with people. In reality, this doesn't work like that, except in the movies. These girls got swept up in the Juno craze, and then found out they needed to make money. (I remind you, this is just a theory)

c. The story is blown out of proportion and made up. I haven't fact checked this story or the news source.

In response to an article on Slate sent to me by a friend. I couldn't let the opportunity go without passing some sort of judgment.

Let's assume that some of the article is conjecture, and that the Saudis are indeed working on getting the textbooks updated.

The level of bureaucracy that is steeped in this monarchy is insurmountable. And to think Americans complain about government slowdowns here (yet lefties still want a wholly government run public health care system!).

One question could be "Why would there be this hatred in there for Christianity?", which is easily answered. If I have to spell it out on this blog, then I suggest you go Google the Crusades.

Let's throw that question out for a minute.

Okay, so where do we go from here? What could possibly explain this type of instruction?

Some would then suggest Jim Crow, the 5/8Th rule, women's suffrage (or the lack of it) and separate but equal as past indiscretions of American morality that fall into the same line as the Saudi teaching tools.

The issue with the judgment being passed on to standardized tests (in this global day and age) and the fact that the government has been playing all Saddam with us about updating them is cause for concern. As politicians try to clean up America's global image, having our 'allies' produce, perpetuate, and disseminate anti-Christian (which for this post, equals anti-American) viewpoints to their young will undoubtedly continue the cycle of bigotry and hate.

Even with America's blemishes of the past and present, the greater good for all has maintained as they goal of the majority of the American people and its elected officials. It is impossible to please everyone, so there are many policies that appear to be detrimental to a certain group of people. With the melting pot population, this is going to be a constant theme; but that is what makes America great. Our constitution, our rules, and our people are a 'living' document that continues to grow and mature with the times.

For all that being said, it is true that those indiscretions, among many others, helped shape the USA for what it is today (for better or for worse).YES, you are married to your country of origin, it is unavoidable. Without our past, we wouldn't have our present and of course not our future.

In fairness, John McCain's remarks recently about letting cigarettes kill Iranians comes off as boorish. However, we cannot excuse Obama for his past voting record, or even his current sidestepping and big talking tactics. Why is this occurring when someone like Hillary gets skewered (or we could even go to President Bush for a reference on being torched by the media). What is the love affair with an inexperienced, over matched Senator running for president? This isn't the movies where everything works out in the end...this is real life where the president's decisions will impact the world.

As the Celtics revel in an updated NBA championship banner, we often gloss over the 'tragedy' that the storied franchise endured, with the aging of Bird, McHale ,Parish, and then the deaths of Reggie Lewis and Len Bias. What we need to focus on is the curtailing effects felt in Suitland, MD, where the Bias' called home.

On this 22 year anniversary of Len Bias' tragic death, ESPN put out an article detailing the cause and effect of his passing, as well as the ongoing tragedy of the Bias family (his younger brother, Jay, died 4 years later).

ADT Support = Staley + Not Fixed

PSA for all people who may have ADT come out and fix stuff at their home.

Last week, our card key reader stopped functioning on our exterior door. We could still get into the building with our keys, and the alarm itself was still functioning. Our Office Admin called ADT to come fix the situation.

Wed. - no one showed up.

Thursday - called again, was told we were in the queue.

Friday - again, no one showed up. There was a promise that we would be second on the list for Monday.

Here comes Monday. The ADT technician shows up @ 9:30ish to begin working on it. To frame this up properly, the guy was probably 5'10" or so, and about 335 lbs.

I get up from my desk shortly after his arrival to use the restroom. Now we have two restroom designations - one for boys and one for girls. I attempted to enter the bathroom, and it was locked. At the time, there were only 2 other males in the office, and all were accounted for.

"It must be the ADT guy!".

And about 10 minutes later, sure enough, the ADT technician finally exited the bathroom so that myself and another employee could use the restroom.

This proceeded with the dialogue between each us "That wasn't me" (funking up the bathroom).

So the ADT guy continues his checks, then leaves, stating that he needed a part to fix the issue.

He really on left us with an extra deuce for the day and no hope for this problem to be resolved.

I figured as part of their extensive customer relations training, it would have been mentioned that:

a. You do your business (especially the stinky variety) before you go on site.

b. At minimum, you ask before you use the facilities in a one room show.

Adding insult to injury was that our card key reader was still busted. Not an overall good day to be working at my office!!!

Shrimp Scampi Recipe

I made this a couple of times already, but keep forgetting to post up here for future usage. I use the already peeled and deviened without the tail. I tried it the way in the recipe, but it was a lot of work. Once, I had to substitue shallots for onions, and it worked okay, but it is actually better with the shallots.

INGREDIENTS:

1 pound linguini
4 tablespoons butter
4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling
1 large shallot, finely diced
5 cloves garlic, sliced
Pinch red pepper flakes, optional
20 large shrimp, about 1 pound, peeled and deveined, tail on
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/2 cup dry white wine
1 lemon, juiced
1/4 cup finely chopped parsley leaves

INSTRUCTIONS:

For the pasta, put a large pot of water on the stove to boil. When it has come to the boil, add a couple of tablespoons of salt and the linguini.

Stir to make sure the pasta separates; cover. When the water returns to a boil, cook for about 6 to 8 minutes or until the pasta is not quite done. Drain the pasta reserving 1 cup of water.

Meanwhile, in a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons butter in 2 tablespoons olive oil over medium-high heat. Saute the shallots, garlic, and red pepper flakes (if using) until the shallots are translucent, about 3 to 4 minutes.

Season the shrimp with salt and pepper; add them to the pan and cook until they have turned pink, about 2 to 3 minutes. Remove the shrimp from the pan; set aside and keep warm.

Add wine and lemon juice and bring to a boil. Add 2 tablespoons butter and 2 tablespoons oil. When the butter has melted, return the shrimp to the pan along with the parsley and cooked pasta and reserved pasta water.

Stir well and season with salt and pepper.

Drizzle over a bit more olive oil and serve immediately.

This guy has some funny anti-inspiration pictures that most of us saw in the 90's creeping into our office spaces.

When the first came through at the game testing place, I was all for it and inspired.

Now, when I see the motivational ploys, it kind of gets me down that my employer would think that a simple picture would motivate me.

Being proud of what you do is more of a factor than some wall hanging. Plus, I have an issue with motivation if it is forced, which is why I strayed from joining any of the Armed Forces.

In hindsight, it would have done me some good getting a kick in the azz when I was younger. However, I motivated myself out of that option pretty quickly.

It is amazing how one can get so jazzed to get some work done around the house, yet will only do it when schoolwork or other pressing needs SHOULD be taking precedence.

The Ear has popped! Check out the nasty ear on The Colossus. Early stoppage on this was a joke, as was the previous fight with the Hands of Steel. EliteXC looks a little second class to UFC right now with its fighter pedigree. It would be interesting to see Kimbo take on the likes of Frank Mir, or even Brock Lesnar.
