Frightened Rabbit (SCO)

Frightened Rabbit is not easy to put in a box. Their latest album span from interpretations of bluegrass, over alt. folk to uptempo pop songs. A pretty weird mix, but somehow Frightened Rabbit pulled it off, and Midnight Organ Fight became one of the absolute best albums last year.

Now we get the chance to see Frightened Rabbit live in Denmark. Last time they should have played here (at Loppen in october) the concert was cancelled.

It's really frustrating to sit here and watch the entrance arm band on my left arm, knowing that I have work my ass off for 3 more days before I can use it. The next couple of days I will run through the bands that I'm going to witness on Roskilde '09. And since I'm making a mixtape for the camp, I guess I can just as well share it with you guys. Enjoy.

Sometime Around Midnight - The Airborne Toxic Event

I strongly encourage you to take a listen to the new self titled album from The Airborne Toxic Event.

After Pitchfork gave the album the historically low score 1.6 out of 10, calling it a complete ripoff of Arcade Fire, Bright Eyes, Interpol and the Strokes, I must admit that I completely wrote this album off. But through the last couple of weeks I've really come to like it anyway. It's not like TATE have reinvented the wheel or anything, but they've got some really nice dark and catchy tunes. And hey, the above mentioned bands aren't the worst sources of inspiration are they? And I really feel that's all it is, a source of inspiration and not a rip-off.

Furthermore they are not a bad live act at all. I took some pictures at the concert in Lille Vega a couple of weeks ago:

I feel like it's time to make a little Bonnie Prince Billy update. That guy is just releasing records at rocket speed isn't he? I haven't had the chance to listen to his new critically acclaimed album "Beware", but judged from the first single "I Am Goodbye" it's really promissing. As on his last album "Lie down in the light" the album is a bit more uptempo and light than the old albums "I see a darkness" etc.

Bonnie Prince Billy's duet with Indie folk singer Scout Niblett, is one of the greatiest songs so far this year. Just amazing!

I've really looked forward to the new M. Ward album. Now I've spent the last 3 weeks listening to it and I'm not disappointed. M. Ward continues to write really convincing dusty folk / blues. "Never had nobody" is one of my favorite tracks on the new album "Hold Time".

The Avett Brothers

I have no idea why I've never heard about the Avett Brothers. But better late than never I guess. The Avett Brothers are from North Carolina and the band consists of the two brothers Seth & Scott Avett. Their newest album is called "The Second Gleam" and it's their 11th (!)

One of my absolute favorite websites / TV shows for last couple of months is without a doubt "From the basement". The latest band to visit Nigel Godrich's basement is the fantastic White Denim.

I had the plessure to see an intimate instore live performance by Langhorn Slim in the Grimey's record shop in Nashville a couple of weeks ago, and it blew me away. First of all, Grimey's must be the coolest record store I've ever seen because of the spectacular inexpensive LP section and the fabulous continuous live sessions. To top that off they served free pizza's and drinks during the Langhorne session. What a great afternoon.

You can see Langhorn live in concert at Rust in Copenhagen November 9th.

Roskilde '08 in short

Back home again from the absolutely amazing Roskilde '08.

I've heard a lot of complaints about the programme this year because of the lack of super bands like Metallica, Tool and Iron Maiden. I think it's the last time we've seen a Roskilde Festival beeing built up around these super bands. Gigantic, expensive and most of the times horrible concerts in places like Horsens have pushed the band prices up. Roskilde Festival simply can't compete with these big events. Like I see it Roskilde is in a tight spot, they didn't even sell all the tickets. 8000 was left!

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Roskilde Festival took the chance and placed performers like Tina Dickow, L.O.C and Teitur on the Orange main stage. Not a good idea to say at least. None of the above mentioned artists delivered anything more than expected. The sunday programme speaked for it self really: Tina Dickow, Slayer, Bob Hund, Jay-Z. Only Slayer is really an orange stage band, and even though that Jay-Z surprisingly actually pulled the difficult closing act off, in the end this must be the weakest sunday line ups we've ever seen.

Because of the rather thin Orange stage programme, the tent stages were packed all the time. Especially the Odeon stage was way too busy.

Never the less Roskilde '08 was the best Roskilde experience I've had since my festival debut in '97. And why is that? Well, For me personally, the programme was perfect. Garnished with absolutely astonishing weather and the company of really nice people, this festival was destined to succeed for me. I don't think there's anywhere in the world where you can succesfully blend 100.000 people such a small area, and still don't have any trouble with violence. People take care of each other - and that's really what the festival is all about.

The "Less trash - more music" campaign was also a success. People actuallly used the containers this year leaving a much cleaner venue behind.

The best musical experiences for me this year was:

Grinderman
Band of Horses

And yes I know - Not too many of the small concerts mentioned. But like I mentioned earlier on, there was just too packed in the small tents. Instead I used my spare time to get up front on the Orange stage.
